Practical advice like “always lock your car” or “don’t leave your windows cracked open” is plentiful, but even the most diligent of us sometimes slip up. And even if you do lock your doors, that doesn’t completely eliminate the risk of your car getting nabbed. After all, how many of us even drive the most commonly stolen cars? Well, potentially a lot. The National Insurance Crime Bureau (NICB) released data on the top ten most stolen vehicles from 2023.

Why Are These Cars Being Stolen?

Kia and Hyundai are likely dominating this list because of a number of viral social media posts detailing how to steal these brands of cars. In fact, according to the NICB, 2023 was the first time in several years that the top slots on the list didn’t go to full-size pickups.

So, if you drive anything on this list, but especially those two brands, be thorough with your safety precautions. No one wants to leave an event only to find their car missing.

Precautions to Avoid Card Theft

The NICB recommends that you always take the following precautions to prevent your car from being stolen:

  • Park in well-lit areas.
  • Make sure all doors and windows are closed and locked.
  • Keep your valuables with you. If you must leave items or valuables in the car, hide them in the glove compartment or the trunk.
  • Keep your keys with you.
  • Don’t leave your car running.
  • Report a theft to your insurer and to law enforcement immediately. Keep important information like the VIN handy for these reports.
