Applying a fresh layer of black mulch is one of the easiest and quickest ways to improve your landscaping. The versatile material makes plant beds look more manicured, creates a dark contrast for greenery and flowers, adds definition to a walkway, and improves moisture and nutrients.

We spoke to professional landscaper Christian Winfield to share his expertise on how and why you should consider black mulch for your yard.

What is Black Mulch?

“Black mulch is essentially chipped up pallets and other untreated woods that are colored black using dye,” says Winfield. The important thing is to look for black mulch containing only natural dye. “Black mulch with natural dyes that has been air dried prior to being colored prolongs the life of the mulch, ensuring it breaks down slower and provides longer lasting weed suppression.”

Is Black Mulch Good for My Landscape?

Black mulch is a great choice for your front or back yard. It can be applied to garden beds to enhance the aesthetic, improve moisture, retain heat, and prevent weeds. However, some types of black mulch should be avoided. “There can be black mulches that contain harmful chemicals,” says Winfield. “This is usually caused by using treated wood.” Some mulch also contains inorganic dye.

For best results, choose black mulch that has been made with untreated wood and natural dye that won’t harm plants or the environment.

Improve Entry With Black Mulch

Black mulch makes a big impact right by your front door. Seen here, this flower bed from @phoenixlsanddesign leads guests to the entrance of the home. The black mulch helps the bright flowers and plants pop against the black background, while the natural stone border keeps everything contained and tidy.

What We Like About It: This front yard proves that just a few bags of black mulch can work wonders on the overall curb appeal of your home.

Keep Your Flower Bed Healthy With Black Mulch

Here’s another flower bed with black mulch, this one located in the backyard. When installing this bed, @daisies.and.dahlias used pink flowers that will bloom all season long. The black mulch will keep the plants healthy and the blooms bright by blocking harmful and unattractive weeds.

What We Like About It: “Black mulch acts as a great weed suppressor by blocking out any sunlight that would normally reach the seedlings of the weeds, preventing the weeds from germinating and growing,” says Winfield.

Create Dramatic Contrast With Black Mulch

Of course what we love most about black mulch is the dark and dramatic color. Seen here in this landscape from @adventures_in_my_garden, the vibrant green leaves of the hosta plant shine bright against the dark mulch. Brown or red mulch would not provide the same bold contrast.

What We Like About It: This plant bed also works as a divider between two grassy areas, the black mulch adds definition for a polished look.

Black Mulch Keeps Your Planter’s Soil Moist

The black mulch in this raised planter from @winfieldlandscapes provides a nice finished look, and will keep the ficus trees healthy and happy. Raised planters dry out faster because the soil is more exposed to the air. But Black mulch can help! It not only looks nice, the mulch also helps retain moisture.

What We Like About It: “Black mulch provides a layer between the soil and the air which reduces the evaporation process, thus ensuring a consistent level of moisture in the soil,” says Winfield.

Keep Shady Areas Warm With Black Mulch

Using black mulch in shady areas of your yard will keep the soil warm so plants can thrive, like in this shaded bed from @terrace.landscape. Once again, see how the black mulch allows the plants to shine against the dark background. This is Black Wood Mulch from @earthcosoils which slowly adds organic matter to the soil through decomposition.

What We Like About It: “The black mulch absorbs heat from the sun, which helps maintain a warmer soil temperature for longer,” says Winfield.

Achieve a Smooth Application of Black Mulch

Ever wonder how professional landscapers get mulch to look so smooth and even? Watch as @medinalandscapingky demonstrates the secret. After distributing and spreading the mulch onto the planting area, they use the backside of a simple plastic rake to achieve the extra smooth finish—continuously going over the mulch with a sweeping motion. Clever!

What We Like About It: This simple technique makes a surprisingly big difference in the finished look of your mulch.

Create a Tree Base With Black Mulch

Mulching around the base of a tree has a nice look, as seen here in this video from @archboldlandscaping—but it can also improve the health of your trees and make them grow faster. According to Kansas State University “Research has proven that, over time, a mulch ring placed three to six feet around the tree can almost double the growth rate of the tree.”

What We Like About It: Notice the ideal flat shape of the mulch ring. Piling mulch up around the trunk in a volcano shape can actually damage the tree and cause rot.
