Plant a Drought-Tolerant Grass

One effective way to drought-proof your lawn is by choosing drought-tolerant grass varieties. In warm climates, grasses like Zoysia, Bermuda, and Buffalo thrive on minimal water. For cooler regions, Tall Fescue and Fine Fescue are resilient to both drought and cold. These grasses are perfect for dry spells and require less water than other varieties.

Why You Might Want to Stop Raking Your Leaves https://www.familyhandyman.com/article/should-you-stop-raking-your-leaves-this-fall/ Tue, 19 Nov 2024 17:09:08 +0000 https://www.familyhandyman.com/?p=648687 Discover the pros and cons of raking leaves to determine if this seasonal chore is really necessary.

The post Why You Might Want to Stop Raking Your Leaves appeared first on Family Handyman.

]]>
As a lifelong New Englander, I know that raking leaves in the fall is an expected part of life. It’s commonly understood that you should clean up every last leaf from your yard before the snow arrives. But in recent years, this practice has faced scrutiny. Some now advocate for a more environmentally friendly approach that involves leaving leaves in place. So, with another fall upon us, what’s the right choice?

In this article, we’ll explore the pros and cons of both options, featuring insights from Shawn Doucette of Facility Maintenance Solutions.

Benefits of Raking Your Leaves

Before you stop raking leaves, consider the benefits of leaf cleanup.

  • Aesthetics: A well-raked lawn looks neat and tidy, improving your home’s curb appeal. Plus, there’s nothing as satisfying as getting every last leaf.
  • Prevent plant fungus and disease: Unraked leaves can develop mold and fungus, which could spread to bushes and shrubs in your landscaping.
  • Lawn health: Keeping leaves raked promotes a healthy lawn, as thick layers of leaves will smother and kill your grass. “It’s good to have oxygenated soil, and you’ll end up with dead, yellow spots on your lawn in the spring if you don’t rake,” Doucette says.
  • Safety: Leaves can hide uneven ground or trip hazards for you and your family, as well as guests. Some leaves, like oak, are also very slippery.

Benefits of NOT Raking Your Leaves

If you think you might stop raking leaves, there are some advantages.

  • Natural fertilizer: As leaves break down and decay, they return nutrients to the soil.
  • Preserves biodiversity: Many microorganisms, insects and small animals rely on decaying leaf litter as a habitat or a safe place to overwinter.
  • More free time: Letting leaves lie will give you more time to enjoy fall weekends with friends and family.
  • Less allergen exposure: Leaves contain pollen, dust and dirt. Avoid this added allergen exposure by not raking your leaves.
  • Natural weed management: Group leaves into piles or thick layers around shrubs in landscaping beds to inhibit weed growth. The leaves will block sunlight and prevent any airborne weed spores from taking root in the soil.

Should I Stop Raking My Leaves?

Whether or not you rake your leaves really comes down to personal preference. But if you’re thinking you might stop raking leaves, you’ll want to consider a few points.

If you live in a wet climate, unraked leaves can easily get damp and moldy. It’s important to rake them up to reduce air allergens and prevent infecting landscape plantings. Also, in drier climates, or areas prone to forest fires, you’ll want to rake leaves to reduce flammable leaf litter.

If you live in a Homeowner’s Association (HOA), you likely have to rake your leaves. HOA’s often have rules that govern the outside appearance of your home. Some provide landscaping services, which include fall cleanup. Those that don’t will have guidelines and even deadlines when you’re expected to have your leaves cleaned up.

I Tried the New Battery-Powered Toro Leaf Blower, and Here’s How It Went https://www.familyhandyman.com/article/battery-powered-toro-leaf-blower/ Tue, 19 Nov 2024 16:37:19 +0000 https://www.familyhandyman.com/?p=648412 I tested the new Toro leaf blower with 900 CFM and was blown away by the amount of power provided by this handheld electric leaf blower.

The post I Tried the New Battery-Powered Toro Leaf Blower, and Here’s How It Went appeared first on Family Handyman.

]]>
I tried the all-new Toro leaf blowerthe Toro 60-volt Max 900-CFM 165-MPH leaf blower, to be exactand I was (literally) blown away. This was my first experience with the Toro leaf blower, and I am quite impressed.

I have used dozens of leaf blowers in my day and can confidently say I’ve experienced a wide range of performances from blowers. I started my leaf blower journey with the classic handheld Stihl BG86C blower. Since then, I have personally owned and tested five handheld gas blowers, nine backpack leaf blowers (both battery and gas), three handheld corded electric leaf blowers, and 11 handheld battery-powered blowers.

What Is the Battery-Powered Toro Leaf Blower?

When Toro designed their new battery leaf blower, we were shocked to see how much thought went into the design and the performance. You can easily tell that the team that pulled this blower together included people like me, who have used dozens of blowers and knew that Toro needed to push the envelope to stay competitive in the battery-powered leaf blower space.

I admit that I was skeptical when I first received this blower. Toro, a brand with an amazing reputation for providing some of the most powerful zero-turn mowers, has long been known for its success with golf course management tools and a wide range of commercial products. However, they have only recently begun to dip their toes in the battery-powered space, starting with their classic lawnmowers, which I have come to know and love.

Toro Leaf Blower Features

The blower boasts a whopping 900 CFM (cubic feet per minute) and 165 MPH air speed, both of which are at the top of the game in the leaf blower world. You can reach the maximum airspeed by using the “Turbo” button, which is meant for temporary blasts of air that help remove wet leaves and grass from surfaces.

This blower also comes with a concentrated nozzle, which helps further focus air and increase overall air speed for targeted clean-up. The Toro battery-powered blower also comes with several easy-to-control measures, including a textured grip, a well-balanced body, variable speed and cruise control so that you don’t tire out your hand, and an aggressive design that helps hold the blower down and forward.

You can use the 60-volt battery on the Toro leaf blower on other 60V Max products from Toro, which saves you money on buying new batteries for these tools in the long run. As Toro continues to build out the 60V Max lineup, this can result in huge savings for the average homeowner who doesn’t have to buy a new battery with each tool.

How I Tested the Toro Leaf Blower

Toro Flex Force 60 Volt Max 900 Cfm 165 Mph Battery Handheld Leaf Blower Features

Assembly

The new Toro battery-powered leaf blower was very simple to put together. It comes in two or three pieces that easily snap together. I quickly snapped the nozzle onto the base of the blower and excitedly rushed out the door to start eviscerating leaves.

Job Site Test (Commercial Landscaping)

I used the Toro battery-powered blower on the job site first. Having recently re-started a landscaping company, I had about eight lawns back-to-back on my first day with the Toro blower. I was excited to see how it would perform relative to other handheld battery blowers. My first stop was mowing my friend Chase’s house. He lives in a nice neighborhood with lots that are about acre or less.

This presented the ideal opportunity to see how the Toro blower would perform on a typical lawn. Another positive of using the battery-powered Toro blower is that Chase has two small kids that I knew napped at various points throughout the day. My gas-powered backpack blower could wake the dead with its high noise levels, so having an electric tool was great for making sure I could maneuver around their home without waking the kids.

I will also caution that most handheld battery leaf blowers aren’t used for commercial landscaping purposes. They aren’t designed to last all day, and I knew that going into this round of testing. Other blowers, including electric ones, are designed to go with you on the job site. Toro designed this blower for residential homeowners looking to crush leaves and debris in their backyard, put the battery back on the charger and get on with their life. That doesn’t mean I am not going to push the blower to its limits and use it however I can.

Toro Flex Force 60 Volt Max 900 Cfm 165 Mph Battery Handheld Leaf Blower

Home Test

I used the Toro on my yard after the first time mowed again after a week straight of rainfall here in middle Tennessee. The grass clippings were still a bit moist. If you have ever used a leaf blower after mowing a moist lawn, you will understand that this situation is headache-inducing. Wet grass sticks to concrete like nothing you have ever seen. In order to get it off, you generally have to either wait until it dries, use a push broom, or have a blower that can somehow lift it off of the concrete.

Most leaf blowers put out about 400-500 CFM. Even some of the most powerful backpack leaf blowers will put out 700 CFM or so of air. At 900 CFM, the Toro 60V Max may be one of the most powerful handheld leaf blowers I have ever seen. The combination of tremendous air volume output with wind speeds of 165 MPH means that very few blowers on the market come close to this amount of power.

So naturally, I had to use this on the famous wet grass clippings to see how it would do. It was an absolute demolition. The leaf blower removed almost every blade of grass from the concrete driveway. I was so impressed that I wanted to ring the doorbell and tell my friend all about it. I have never seen a blower, especially a handheld battery-powered leaf blower, push this much air and perform so well.

Blowing Heavy Debris

I set this blower back in the trailer and moved on to the next house. At the next job, I was looking at a garden bed that had been washed out with water and spread mulch all over the lawn and sidewalk leading up to the front door. The mulch was a shredded hardwood mulch and was mostly dry by this point. Before I mowed the yard, this needed to be cleaned up. It presented a perfect opportunity to give the Toro 60V blower a chance to run wild by blowing mulch in the grass (which is notoriously difficult) and pushing it across a sidewalk.

The blower accomplished both of these. Moving mulch across concrete was a breeze, and I was shocked to see how easily it lifted the mulch out of the thick, long grass and placed it back into the garden bed.

I moved onto the third house of the day, which was just like the first one. The grass was slightly dryer, and the clippings blasted back into the grass easily. At this point, I was texting my wife, telling her I couldn’t believe it.

As a second reminder, this blower was not designed for professional landscapers in the same way that gas-powered leaf blowers are. Those can run all day because you can keep buying and pouring gas into the blower for as long as you need. Toro’s new blower obviously requires you to recharge the batteries.

Long-Term Performance

Toro Flex Force 60 Volt Max 900 Cfm 165 Mph Battery Handheld Leaf Blower Final verdict

In my personal use of this blower around my house, which seems to be more and more neglected the more I work on other people’s lawns, I continued to be impressed with the Toro leaf blower. In the course of my normal weekly lawn maintenance, I found the blower to have consistent, extremely powerful performance.

One downside I noticed relatively early is that when you use the turbo button off and on, there is a noticeable drain on the battery life. I expected extremely high power to reduce battery life, but I was a bit disappointed to see how quickly it reduced battery life. Without using the turbo button, I still had more than enough battery life to care for my yard (and then some).

As the weeks passed and leaves began falling from the trees, I retested the Toro battery blower once more. Leaves were absolutely light work for this blower. The blower is an absolute bully for drying leaves, easily launching them across my yard. The turbo button was unnecessary, but I had to use it for the sake of science. It was total and absolute destruction of the leaves.

Pros:

  • Extremely high power with 900 CFM
  • Ergonomic grip with easy maneuvering
  • 60V Max battery system used across Toro’s 60V lineup
  • Finger-saving cruise control function
  • Much quieter than gas blowers
  • Turbo button to toggle maximum speed

Cons:

  • Battery life drains with Turbo usage
  • Fewer tools in Toro’s battery lineup than some other brands

Why You Should Trust Us

As I mentioned at the beginning of this article, I have personally tested dozens, if not hundreds, of leaf blowers, including backpack blowers, corded electric blowers, cordless blowers and gas-powered handheld blowers.

As a landscaper, I developed a unique love for lawn tools after using them every day for years. Now, I spend my days testing lawnmowers, string trimmers, leaf blowers and more. Much of my time is spent using new leaf blowers and comparing them to see which one reigns supreme.

FAQ

How long does a Toro leaf blower last?

The Toro leaf blower advertises a run time of 120 minutesbut this is generally on a low-speed setting under ideal conditions. In my experience, the blower can run for about an hour for typical use around the house, where you may maximize the power for a longer time. Introducing the turbo button drops the run time to about 30 minutes.

How do you use the Toro battery-powered leaf blower?

The Toro battery leaf blower can be easily controlled using the variable speed trigger, which changes the amount of power coming from the battery. It also has a cruise control function that holds a certain speed in place, allowing your hand to relax and hold the blowerno more cramping.

This is a handheld leaf blower, meaning you simply pull the trigger and point it at whatever debris you want to blow away.

What Other Reviewers Had to Say

While the Toro 60V Max Battery-Powered Blower is still relatively new, the few who have used it have agreed with meit rocks. One reviewer at Lowe’s felt similarly, calling the blower a “powerhouse” with “the size and weight of the blower working perfectly to balance the blower when used in turbo mode.” Another reviewer at Lowe’s had the same experience as me, using this blower on “1/2 acre of concrete around their farm” and mentioned that the blower “gets rid of those pesky leaves and grass clippings.”

Toro Battery-Powered Leaf Blower vs. Ryobi Battery-Powered Leaf Blower

I’ve had the distinct privilege of using the Toro and Ryobi battery-powered leaf blowers. The Ryobi battery-powered leaf blower is a great blower. Ryobi’s new Whisper series produces quiet, powerful tools that can be found at The Home Depot for a great price. Ryobi’s Whisper series blower was the cat’s meow when it was released. It had one of the highest CFM and MPH ranges on the market and was advertised as the quietest blower.

Times have changed in the last two years. There are a number of other blowers in a similar power range that also exhibit quiet run times. The Toro battery blower simply outguns the Ryobi blower. I have used both side-by-side, and the Toro is the better blower.

Final Verdict

I can confidently say that this is hands down the best combination of price, power and performance on the market. I am excited that Toro will continue to build out their electric lineup with the 60V Max batteries so that I can achieve better cost efficiency in the future. I also think Toro can keep refining their battery technology so that the batteries last longer.

All in all, this blower has set a new standard for power in handheld electric blowers.

If you're one of those folks, you may be using the chair wrong.

The post Think Adirondack Chairs Are Uncomfortable? You’re Using Them Wrong appeared first on Family Handyman.

If you’ve been looking to furnish your outdoor area, you’ve likely been browsing for lawn chairs. Or perhaps you’re planning on replacing old or uncomfortable chairs. Either way, you’ve likely looked at several popular styles of outdoor chair. But if you’ve seen negative reviews about the comfort of Adirondack chairs, or you dislike your own, don’t count them out just yet.

Most people who complain that Adirondack chairs are uncomfortable are just using them wrong.

What Are Adirondack Chairs?

Adirondack chairs are a distinct style of outdoor chair. They have tall backs and wide arms, so they look like a fantastic choice for lounging in your yard. What separates them from other lawn chairs out there, however, is the legs. On an Adirondack chair, the rear legs are much shorter than the front legs. They also attach to the seat at an obtuse angle, whereas the front legs form a right angle. This means that when the chair is sitting on flat ground, the seat pitches back

@watchautumn Thank you, Adirondack Chair.. Sorry I doubted you.. #adirondacks #adirondackchair #themoreyouknow original sound – Autumn | Millennial Money

Why Are Adirondack Chairs So Uncomfortable?

To put it bluntly, if your Adirondack chairs are particularly uncomfortable, it’s most likely because you’re using them wrong.

As TikToker Autumn (@watchautumn) explains in her video above, the design of the legs pushes the seat up at an awkward angle. And it’s exactly this odd angle that makes so many people write off these chairs as uncomfortable. But fear not! It’s very easy to use these chairs the right way. And once you do, you’ll understand why they’ve been a staple of yards for such a long time.

How to Properly Sit on Adirondack Chairs

Autumn begins her video by explaining that she bought some Adirondack chairs and immediately found them uncomfortable. She says that her backyard is flat, and so the shorter back legs left her sitting in a very uncomfortable position. But then someone alerted her to the fact that Adirondack chairs get their name from the Adirondack range in New York, a famously mountainous and hilly part of the country. These chairs are designed to accommodate hills and mountains, letting people still sit out and enjoy the scenery.

Autumn then explains that when she moved her Adirondack chair to the hill in her backyard, with the rear legs higher up on the hill, the design choices suddenly became clear. Now, those shorter legs balance out the slope of the hill, leaving you sitting upright at a right angle, just like other lawn chairs do.

So, if your Adirondack chairs have been sitting on flat ground, move them onto a slope so they’re angled downward. Suddenly, you’ll find that they’re much more comfortable than you originally thought.

Should You Mulch Leaves or Bag Them? https://www.familyhandyman.com/article/bag-leaves-or-mulch-leaves/ Mon, 11 Nov 2024 19:45:22 +0000 https://www.familyhandyman.com/?p=647288 What should you do with all those leaves? We weigh the pros and cons to help you choose the best option for your lawn.

The post Should You Mulch Leaves or Bag Them? appeared first on Family Handyman.

]]>
Fall is here, and with it comes the task of leaf cleanup. If you’re in New England like me, that often means several weekends of raking, piling and bagging leaves. This year, I’m considering mulching them with my lawn tractor instead. Both bagging and mulching have their pros and cons, each affecting your lawn’s health in different ways. In this article, we’ll break down the benefits and drawbacks of each method, with expert insights from Jeremy Martin of Willow Gates Landscaping.

What Is Mulching Leaves?

Mulching leaves means to cut them into small pieces to reduce their volume and hasten decomposition. Mulched leaves are typically returned to the soil, but can be bagged up and removed.

How to Mulch Leaves

You can use a lawn mower or leaf mulcher to mulch leaves.

With the bag off your lawn mower, go over the leaves as though cutting the lawn. The blades will shred the leaves into small pieces, then distribute them across your lawn. Mulching works well for light leaf litter that doesn’t exceed the mower deck, but thick layers can overwhelm the blades and cause the mower to shut down. To avoid this, mulch regularly as leaves accumulate.

A leaf mulcher is a power tool that shreds leaves with blades or string. Handheld models suck in leaves and collect the shredded material in attached bags, making them ideal for small amounts of leaves. Larger stand-alone models require raking and piling leaves but can quickly handle larger volumes.

Pros and Cons of Mulching Leaves

Mulching leaves with a mower adds nutrients like phosphorous, nitrogen and potassium to the soil as the leaves break down. Smaller pieces of leaves also add organic matter to the soil, promoting moisture retention.

On the other hand, if mulched leaves are too thick on your lawn, it can smother grass and kill it. “They will form a wet, dense mat,” Martin says. And if you like a pristine lawn free of all debris, you will not like mulching leaves into your grass.

Pros and Cons of Bagging Leaves

Bagging leaves makes it easier to contain and transport leaves for disposal. Some municipalities even offer curbside pickup of bagged leaves. Raking and bagging leaves also protects your lawn from layers of decaying leaves, which can harm the grass through the winter. And for a tidy lawn, nothing beats bagging leaves.

However, raking and bagging leaves is more time-consuming than mulching, and it can also be more expensive if you’re buying bags or paying for disposal. Plus, by bagging, your lawn misses out on the natural nutrients that mulched leaves would provide.

Mulching vs. Bagging Leaves: Which Is Right for Me?

“It’s really situational,” Jeremy Martin of Willow Gates Landscaping says of mulching vs bagging leaves. It will largely depend on the amount of leaves you can expect each fall. “If you live in dense woods as I do, mulching leaves will kill the lawn,” he says. In this case, you’ll need to bag leaves or blow them off the property into the woods.

If you only have a few trees and a moderate amount of leaf cleanup, you have the option of mulching your leaves or bagging them. “If you don’t have a lot of trees, you can mulch leaves, and you’d be fine,” Martin says.

Dead Leaves on Tree in Winter

Why Do Trees Lose Their Leaves?

Trees typically lose their leaves seasonally before the winter to conserve water and energy during the dormant winter months. Shedding leaves is also a protective strategy for trees. With fewer surfaces for snow and ice to cling to, there’s less risk of broken or damaged branches. Empty branches also allow winter winds to easily pass through.

Trees will also lose their leaves when they are diseased or stressed.

Could This Hack Make Bagging Leaves Easier? https://www.familyhandyman.com/article/bagging-leaves-hack/ Tue, 05 Nov 2024 15:34:51 +0000 https://www.familyhandyman.com/?p=646189 Leaf cleanup can be a daunting task in the fall, but with a few clever hacks, it can become much easier and even enjoyable.

The post Could This Hack Make Bagging Leaves Easier? appeared first on Family Handyman.

If raking leaves feels like an endless chore, youll love this clever trick. With just a large plastic bag and a few simple steps, you can quickly gather leaves without constantly bending over or making multiple trips.

A Quick Leaf Cleanup Trick

YouTuber Paris Karnes shared a quick hack to quickly tidy up unsightly leaves from your yard.

First, you shake out a large plastic bag. Then, stand in a wide stance and tightly wrap the bag around your feet. Shuffle your feet through the leaf pile and, with your hands, pull the leaves toward you into the bag.

This will save a lot of time and take some strain off your back from bending down repeatedly to move leaves from the ground to the bag. Its recommended that you wear gloves when handling yard debris.

Other Leaf Cleanup Hacks

One of the simplest ways to streamline leaf gathering is to use a tarp. Spread a large tarp on the ground in the areas where youll be raking and rake the leaves directly onto it. Once the tarp is full, simply drag it to your compost bin or disposal area. This technique minimizes the number of trips back and forth and makes moving large piles of leaves at once easy.

The fastest way to remove leaves from your lawn is with a lawnmower with a bagging attachment. By mowing over your leaves, youll shred them into smaller pieces. This makes the leaves perfect for mulching garden beds, providing natural insulation for your plants during the colder months.

Bagging Leaves vs. Leaving Them

The debate over whether to bag fallen leaves or leave them on the ground often divides lawn care enthusiasts.

On one hand, bagging leaves provides a neat and tidy lawn and helps prevent thick leaf layers from smothering grass. Bagging is also a way to keep yard spaces looking well-kept, especially important in neighborhoods with strict landscaping standards. However, proponents of leaving leaves argue that they provide essential nutrients and act as a natural mulch that enriches the soil and protects grass roots from winter cold.

Left untouched, a layer of leaves can create a blanket on the ground where mold can thrive over the course of a long winter. But when mulched with a mower, leaves break down much faster, adding organic matter back into the ground and creating a healthier ecosystem for the lawn. Also, leaving leaves benefits local wildlife, as it offers shelter for insects and small animals, essential for biodiversity.

For those who want the best of both worlds, mulching leaves on-site can offer a compromiseallowing the leaves to nourish the soil without overwhelming the lawn.

Oh, fall is a beautiful season. Cooler weather, delicious beverages, and an excuse to wear cozy clotheswhat more could you ask for? As we dust off our cute boots and flannels and settle into the season, we also begin facing this season’s other responsibilities. For me, that looks like piles and piles of leaves.

I live on a beautiful country road alongside both professional landscapers and our green-thumbed neighbors, Patty and Steve. The pressure to keep up is real. But, if you know me, you know that it’s safety first. Ahead, we’ll take a deep dive into leaf pile safety how to keep kids, pets, and yourself safe while maintaining your property.

What Bugs and Animals Hide in Leaf Piles?

According to The Xerces Society of Invertebrate Conservation, leaves provide excellent shelter and habitat for many insects, such as butterflies, moths, and beetles. The Penn State Department of Entomology details how these insects not only promote decomposition and vital nitrogenization of our earth but also pollinate and contribute to necessary plant reproduction. If you’re curious about how to clean up your property as beautifully as Patty and Steve while not disturbing all of this precious buggy ecosystem, check out our other article on whether to rake or leave your leaves alone.

Safety Hazards of Leaf Piles

When it comes to leaf pile safety, there’s more than just the hazard of stepping on a rake. With great biodiversity comes great responsibility. Understanding that there’s a whole world under our leaf piles means well, there’s a whole world under our leaf piles.

Bugs

Those aforementioned bugs can include ones that bite and sting, so be sure to keep a clothing barrier between you and the leaves. This will help reduce some of your risk of getting bitten or stung.

In addition to excellent popcorn, my real-life Boy Scout brother had a number of Scout-branded pamphlets on taking warm showers after camping to wash off ticks. That recommendation absolutely applies here. In the United States, ticks are endemic. Once you or your family are finished playing in or cleaning up your leaves, make sure to put your clothes and your bodies in their respective wash cycles.

Mold

According to health educator and allergist Dr. Maya Gharfeh, “One of the biggest hidden allergens under those leaf piles is mold. If you are mold allergic, make sure to take allergy medications before you head out and wear a face mask while working in the yard this Fall to help prevent allergy symptoms.”

Sharp Objects

Depending on how you gathered your leaves, you may have collected more than just leaves, but also sticks, snakes, and contraband lawn darts. So wear long pants, gloves, close-toed shoes, and any other protective gear that makes sense for whatever you plan to do in those piles.

Leaf Pile Safety Tips

  • Wear protective clothing, such as gloves, long pants, and close-toed shoes, and always keep at least one clothing layer between you and the leaves.
  • Be mindful of any non-leaf debris you may have collected while gathering leaf piles.
  • If you have allergies, consider wearing a facemask.
  • Shower and wash your clothes after leaf pile activities.

For more information, take a look at how to best and most efficiently clean up leaves.

When it comes to hosting get-togethers, enjoying the backyard is a huge perk. Friends company with autumn leaves falling on the ground, kids playing in the grass and someone grilling food for the crowd can create lasting core memories. Of course, securing the best backyard setup for gatherings isnt always easy. There are a ton of choices when it comes to deck furniture, outdoor grills, fire pits and more.

Luckily, Ive locked down my all-time favorite outdoor fire pit brand: Solo Stove. Ive tested products from various outdoor brands, and I’ve written countless Solo Stove reviews. So far, my favorite smokeless fire pit comes from Solo Stove. Ive spent countless hours testing products from the brand: Fire pits, chairs, patio heaters, you name it. If Solo Stove makes it, Ive (likely) tested it. Heres what you need to know before placing an order.

What is Solo Stove?

Solo Stove is a leading outdoor fire pit brand founded in 2011 by two brothers and a small camp stove. Their mission? To gather family and friends to create good memories. They get it.

Now, the brand has grown to include a variety of smokeless fire pits and pizza ovens, patio furniture, outdoor heaters and outdoor accessories. In addition to the official Solo Stove website, you can find select Solo Stove products on Amazon.

How We Test Solo Stove Products

I have tested over a dozen Solo Stove products in nearly every category, including evergreen, limited-edition and seasonal items. I evaluate each product based on the delivery experience, packaging, assembly, quality, and ease of use. Outfitting your patio or backyard setup with Solo Stove gear can be expensive, so I examine, test and review each product as thoroughly as I can with your hard-earned dollar in mind.

Fire Pits

Fire pits are the bread and butter of Solo Stove and the reason the brand was created. Solo Stove fire pits are a great way to add ambiance and (literal) warmth to your outdoor space, and theyre great for roasting smores and hotdogs, as well as grilling other food items.

When it comes to smokeless fire pits, Solo Stove as a brand is a leading force, creating products that meetand in many cases exceedindustry standards. Each fire pit is made with sturdy, weatherproof 304 stainless steel and designed to funnel smoke upward away instead of outward. Solo Stoves 360-degree Signature Airflow design heats air to burn off smoke, so you dont have to shift around the fire pit to avoid teary eyes and a face full of smoke.

One of our favorite fire pit picks is the Bonfire 2.0, made for the backyard and beyond. In other words, its designed for a permanent or portable fire pit experience. The Solo Stove Bonfire even comes with its own carrying bag, so you can store it safely, load it up, and carry it wherevercamping, tailgating, fall party, you name it. Cleanup is easy, too; the base plate and ash pan are removable, which makes cleaning quick and easy. No special cleaning tools are needed; just lift the base plate to remove the ash pan and dump it.

We also love the Mesa fire pit if youre looking for a smaller, more compact backyard fire experience. It has the same signature stainless steel design as other Solo Stove fire pits (e.g., the Bonfire 2.0), but its miniature and small enough to put on an outdoor table. Getting a fire going only takes a few minutes with the Mesa. Simply place fuel (wood or pellets) into the base of the Mesa, light your fire starter, and youre ready to go!

Pizza Ovens

Did someone say artisan pizza? ThePi Prime is Solo Stoves first gas-only pizza oven, which comes at a price lower than other gas-powered pizza ovens on the market. The Pi Prime pizza oven is quick and easy to fire upsimply hook it up to an external propane tank and turn the control knob on the front to ignite a flame. After the oven preheats, youre ready to launch your Neapolitan pizza creation.

Like most standardoutdoor pizza ovens, the Pi Prime has a 90-second cooking experience, so pizzas cook ultra-fast at super-high temperatures. Once youve nailed launching and turning the pizza without overcooking it, youll be whipping up homemade pies for everyone to enjoy.

If you want to try your hand at wood-fired pizza, theSolo Stove Pi Fire provides the ideal gateway to backyard baking. This portable pizza oven topper fits on top of your existing Solo Stove fire pit. Unliketraditional pizza ovensthat have space for wood at the bottom, the Pi Fire features long legs that elevate it over your smokeless fire pit.

Heaters and Lights

Line your patio with sleek, modern torches like the Mesa Torch, a backyard torchlight that runs on fluid. Its a durable, stainless-steel torch made with the famous Solo Stove design, similar to Mesa’s. The weather-resistant steel is painted a semi-matte black to blend seamlessly into any backyard scene. You can choose between two configurations: tall and short. So, your Mesa Torch can light your fence line or be at eye level when youre sitting around the fire pit.

The Mesa Torch has a giant wick, integrated fuel canister and a bezel that fits the snuff cap perfectly for easy extinguishing. Plus, the torch will keep an oversized flame for up to five hours on a single fill. I like to fill mine with a bug-repelling torch fluid to keep mosquitos at bay during the summer.

If youre looking for something to provide a little more warmth than light, the Solo Stove Tower Patio Heateris a pellet-fueled heater that keeps you warm in colder weather.Like the Solo StoveBonfire 2.0fire pit, it issmokeless. It has about a 10-foot heating radius, so its perfect for small to mid-sized patios during chilly (but not freezing) temperatures.

The Tower Patio Heaters hopper box holds about 25 pounds of pellets, and a full hopper box should produce about three hours of warmth. Its perfect if you want a patio heater that doesnt use propane. Pellets are generally easier to store and lighter in weight than firewood. Theyre also typically less expensive than propane and dont pose the same combustion risks as propane tanks.

Furniture

Once your fire pit area is ready to go, youll need seating to kick back and enjoy the crackling flames. Solo Stove is one step ahead. Its sister brand, TerraFlame, has a line of weatherproof outdoor furniture, including the1903 Adirondack modern chair. It combines the classic, timeless design of an Adirondack with new, lightweight outdoor materials. The chair is made of an eco-friendly composite made partially from recycled plastics.

While the chairs materials are resistant to corrosion, the chair is also less prone to chipping and peeling than a chair made of wood. With this Solo Stove chair, you wont have to worry about snagging clothes or blankets on splinters.

Terra Flame recently released new patio furniture, including coffee tables, loveseats and more. Were currently assembling and testing the new furniture for review.

FAQ

What is the point of a Solo Stove?

Solo Stove fire pits are designed to promote airflow, which creates a more efficient burn with less smoke. They are also portable, so you can sit around the fire anywhere, and help contain the mess (and sometimes unpredictable nature) of a traditional backyard bonfire.

Can a Solo Stove be used on a deck?

Solo Stove fire pits can be used on a wood deck but this requires careful attention. If the fire pit is not properly elevated and insulated or if its misused, the deck can be charred or caught on fire.

You should never leave your Solo Stove fire pit (or any fire pit) unattended on a combustible surface, even while cooling down.

Do Solo Stoves get hot on the outside?

Yes! The outside of Solo Stove fire pits gets very hot, so please be cautious.

Can Solo Stove be used indoors?

You should never use a Solo Stove fire pit indoors, not even theMesa. It is for outdoor use only, so please do not try to use it indoors at your kitchen table. You can, however, use it on outdoor dining tables and end tables.

TerraFlames Smores Bowl uses smoke-free gel fuel and can be used indoors on a table or counter for easy, inside marshmallow roasting.

Why You Should Trust Us

That way, you can make consumer-informed decisions based on real-life testing before you buy.

The Bottom Line

If youre looking for a well-made, stainless steel backyard fire pit, Solo Stoves got it. The brand manufactures quality products and thoughtful accessories like smores kits, popcorn makers, gloves and so much more. Like many top-tier fire pit brands, some of their products are pricey, but you pay for a fire pit that will be the center of backyard family gatherings for years to come.

Solo Stoves Mesa fire pit starts at $80, while its smallest ground fire pit, the Ranger, retails for $200. Our favorite, the best-selling Bonfire fire pit, sells for $250, while the brands largest fire pit, the Canyon, is $700. Best of all, many Solo Stove accessories are available to elevate your backyard fire pit experience, making Solo Stove unique. The brand offers free standard shipping with a purchase of $99 or more and frequently runs sales and deals sitewide.

Fall has officially arrived, which means you’ll soon be dedicating hours to lawn cleanup. That is unless you happen to have one of the best leaf vacuums on hand. Of course, you could rely on your trusty old rake or leaf blower to get the job done, but a leaf vacuum can save you tons of time.

Unlike a leaf blower which blows leaves into manageable piles, a leaf vacuum sucks up leaves and other small debris from your lawn and condenses them intobags for quick and easy cleanup. Many leaf vacuums also mulch everything they suck up, making for easy disposal.

We tested almost a dozen different leaf vacuums and were especially impressed by the quick work the DR Leaf and Lawn Vacuum made of cleaning up over 30 gallons of leaves. This walk-behind machine has the ability to clean up your yard in no time, leaving you free to enjoy all that this season has to offer. We’re talking trips to the pumpkin patch, cider donuts and cool nights outside at the bonfire. Heres everything you need to know about the DR Leaf and Lawn Vacuum.

What is the DR Leaf and Lawn Vacuum?

TheDR Leaf and Lawn Vacuum is a gas-powered, walk-behind leaf vacuumsimilar to apush mower. Its powerfulsuction allows it to clean up huge piles of leaves and other backyard debris.

In spite of its bulk and weightit weighs 120 poundsthis machine is surprisingly easy to assemble. It arrives via freight delivery on a large palette. The lawn vacuum is very securely locked down within the box, with dozens of straps that have to be cut away to get the partially assembled vacuum loose. That said, our testers noted that the vacuum does come mostly put together, so assembly only consists of attaching all of the larger pieces to the main unit.

“It was tricky lifting this beast out of its box, as well as navigating it around with the giant hose continually getting in the way. But again, it was mostly just connecting the large pieces together into one full unit,” says product tester Sheri Kaz.

Another reason we’re so impressed by this machine is that its loaded with extra features, including an onboard chipper, steel impeller, easy bagging system and optional hose kit. You can even adjust the height to best suit wet or dry conditions.

we tried it

DR Leaf and Lawn Vacuum

This self-propelled, gas-powered machine has a serrated all-steel impeller and on-board chipper to handle large fall cleanups.

DR Leaf and Lawn Vacuum Features

EZ Bagger Leaf Collection System

Rather than having to attach, empty and re-attach a reusable bag every time you fire this bad boy up, the DR Leaf and Lawn vacuum uses standard leaf bags that can be deposited at the curb or in the compost pile. The platform holds the bag, and the support ring provides a crimp bar for quick installation. Plus, the latch keeps it secure. Just be sure to read the instruction manual carefully.

“At first, we were confused about how to secure the bag in place, then Annamarie figured out that you secure the bag from underneath,” says product tester Dylan Fischer.

This leaf vacuum also includes a leaf bag caddie that is attached to the unit. It holds up to 10 standard leaf bags, so you have empties on hand as you make your way around the yard. You can purchase another caddie separately for even more storage. You can also buy reusable leaf collection bags if you prefer.

Serrated Steel Impeller

This tough blade mulches everything that crosses its path. In fact, the brand is so confident in this impeller’s durability that it’s backed by a lifetime warranty.

On-Board Chipper

 Dr Leaf And Lawn Vacuum

An on-board chipper allows you to add branches up to 1.5 inches in diameter for even more thorough cleanups.

Optional Hose Kit

Purchase an optional hose kit to clean hard-to-reach spots up to seven feet away from the machine, such as window wells, beneath shrubs or along the foundation.

How We Tested It

Product testers Sheri Kaz and Dylan Fischer led the charge and set out to see what the DR Leaf and Lawn Vacuum was really made of. After unpacking and assembling the machine, they added the oil and gas and started it up. Initially, both testers found it difficult to start.

“Dylan couldn’t figure out how to properly work the choke valve, so we had to recruit some city workers,” explains Kaz. “Of course, the guy (shout out to Greenfield City Worker, Bruce!) was able to start it immediately without asking a single question.”

According to our testers, the choke lever on this machine is a piece of metal that the instructions say must be pushed inward. In reality, it needs to be pulled more to the side when starting the engine, then slowly released as the engine revs up.

Once the unit was up and running, we scattered roughly 30 gallons of leaves across two 10-foot by 4-foot rectangles of grass. One rectangle had dry leaves, and the other had damp leaves that had been misted by a hose. Our testers recorded the time it took the DR Leaf and Lawn Vacuum to suck up each set of leaves on the highest setting.

For both the wet and dry leaf tests, the DR Leaf and Lawn Vacuum gave an impressive performance, sucking up almost everything in its path in just one pass. They also appreciated how the chipper automatically turns on without you having to do anything, so it’s always ready to be fed sticks.

Fischer notes that this leaf vacuum isn’t too bad when it comes to maneuverability and feels very similar to a push lawnmower.

What wasn’t ideal, however, was the amount of dust that this unit produced.

“This machine spit out a lot of dust behind it, and Dylan was in the direct line of fire,” says Kaz. “He stopped and had to put on safety eyewear.” The team attributes this to the tubing, which spits debris out toward the top of the vacuum instead of the bottom.

Once everything had been sucked up, our testers noted that the contents of the leaf bag had been mulched up very fine and small. They also pointed out that the on-board chipper is a great feature to have.

Pros

  • Handles huge piles of wet and dry leaves
  • On-board chipper works well on branches
  • Direct bagging
  • Steel impeller with a lifetime warranty
  • Cleans large areas quickly
  • You can walk away from this machine and leave it running

Cons

  • Creates a lot of dust
  • Too bulky and stiff to make quick turns

FAQ

How does DR Lawn vacuum work?

During testing, our product testing team found that the DR Leaf and Lawn Vacuum is quite intuitive. All you have to do is start it up and push it around your yard until all of the leaves and other small debris are gone. Any branches you pick up can be put directly into the on-board chipper. When you’re finished with your cleanup, simply remove the bag and put on a new one for next time.

How long will my DR leaf vacuum run?

Dr Leaf And Lawn Vacuum

The DR Lawn and Leaf Vacuum does not run on a battery. It has a 1.0-liter fuel capacity and a 0.5-liter oil capacity and can hold up to 50 pounds of debris. You can expect this machine to run until it runs out of fuel or has reached capacity.

What Other Reviewers Had to Say

Verified Tractor Supply Co. user SayCheese writes, “The DR Leaf Vacuum is great! It came on a pallet and needed a small amount of assembly. Only 1/2-inch wrench is required. I am glad I took the advice from others and spent the extra money on the self-propelled. This may sound crazy but, I found operating it to be relaxing. Raking that would take 5-6 hrs. It only took 1-1 1/2 hrs with this machine.”

Kenneth from Little Elm, Texas, is impressed by the performance and convenience of this leaf vacuum and calls it an incredible machine.

“This thing is powerful and vacuums like a champ,” they write on the DR Power website. “However, the real beauty of this machine is its ability to bag in paper bags. Anybody can blow them into a pile, but the pickup is a pain. This eliminates the drudgery of the work and is actually fun. And your neighbors will crowd around wondering what it is!”

And Michael, a 76-year-old from Maryland, calls the DR Leaf and Lawn Vacuum a fantastic labor-saving machine.

“My usual method has been to blow leaves into a pile, rake onto a tarp, drag tarp to mulch area, run my lawn mower repeatedly over the piles and rake the flakes onto the mulch pile: maybe 6 hours of work 4 or 5 times a season,” they write. “This machine saves me maybe 4 hours each time and lots of sweat. This XTSP has proven this season to be a life-saver. I’m ecstatic, and mention it to everyone!”

DR Leaf and Lawn Vacuum vs. Billy Goat Leaf Vacuum

Our experts on the product testing team tested two walk-behind leaf vacuums for comparison sake: the DR Leaf and Lawn Vacuum and the Billy Goat Lawn & Litter Vacuum. While both units claim to be self-propelled, our team preferred the Billy Goat lawn vacuum’s maneuverability and ability to take quick turns over the stiffer drive of the DR Leaf and Lawn Vacuum. Additionally, our testers also liked the automated choke lever on the Billy Goat better than the choke lever on the DR.

In terms of performance, the DR Leaf and Lawn Vacuum cleaned up a large, 10-by-4 area more efficiently than the Billy Goat. The DR Leaf and Lawn Vacuum sucked up almost everything in under a minute with just one pass. The Billy Goat, on the other hand, took about a minute and a half and two passes to clear the same amount of leaves in the same area.

The other major difference between the two units is the bag. The Billy Goat Leaf Vacuum comes with a reusable, zipperless bag that is easy to attach and remove. However, it quickly becomes stained and unsightly. The DR Leaf and Lawn Vacuum uses standard paper leaf bags that can be closed and put down at the curb or dumped into a compost pile. And if you happen to prefer a reusable bag, you can purchase one separately for the DR for $85.

Final Verdict

“Huge fan of the chipper on this one! Anyone who has to spend a lot of time raking up branches on their lawn will undoubtedly find themselves using this feature a lot,” raves Fischer.

And that’s not the only thing we love about this machine. We’re fans of the reusable bags that are easy to dispose of, the on-board chipper and the steel impeller that mulches leaves and debris as it sucks them up. One thing is for sure: the DR Leaf and Lawn Vacuum is sure to have your yard clean in no time.

Where to Buy the DR Leaf and Lawn Vacuum

You work hard all week long, so the last thing you want to do is spend your precious free time raking leaves. However, leaf clean up is a necessary evil if you want your yard to look neat and tidy during the fall. Using one of the best leaf blowers or leaf vacuums is a surefire way to save yourself hours of work. But using a combo leaf blower and vacuum? It doesn’t get much better than that.

While these 2-in-1 tools sound like they’d be a major investment, they can be pretty affordable. Case in point: The Toro Ultra Blower Vac is a model you can pick up for around $100. We took this budget-friendly blower vac into our Testing Lab to see if it’s up to the task of a fall cleanup. Heres everything you need to know about this model.

What is the Toro Ultra Blower Vac?

The Toro Ultra Blower Vac is an electric leaf blower that also functions as a leaf vacuum. It has a 4-inch cord and a detachable leaf bag you wear on your shoulder while vacuuming up leaves and debris. In our studio, this blower weighed in at 7.45 pounds. Between its lightweight design, two handles and easy-to-use power knob, the Toro Ultra Blower Vac is comfortable to hold and easy to maneuver.

In blower mode, its motor produces a velocity and air volume of up to 340 cubic feet per minute (CFM), shooting air out at 260 miles per hour (MPH). In vacuum mode, it operates at an impressive 405 cubic feet per minute (CFM) and mulches everything it sucks up. While the manufacturer doesn’t specify the bag’s capacity, it had no trouble sucking up the 30 gallons of leaves we spread out. Once you’re finished, simply empty the contents into a disposable bag and you’re free to go about the rest of your day.

Keep reading for a full breakdown of the Toro Ultra Blower Vac’s features and to find out why it’s one of our budget-friendly picks.

Toro Ultra Leaf Blower Vac

Affordability, performance and ease of use make the Toro Ultra Blower Vac a worthy addition to your tool collection.

Toro Ultra Blower Vac Features

Versatility

As mentioned above, the Toro Ultra Blower Vac functions as both a leaf blower and leaf vacuum. To switch between functions, simply attach the vacuum tube and bag and press the fan inlet cover into place. No tools required!

Mulching Capabilities

In vacuum mode, the Toro Ultra Blower Vac’s metal impeller shreds debris into mulch and deposits it into the bag. According to the manufacturer, this machine shreds leaves and reduces their volume by a ratio of 8:01. Though still fairly fine, our testers noted that the mulch produced by this blower is larger than that produced by some other models.

Variable Speed Knob

The Toro Ultra Blower Vac has one knob which starts and stops the unit. This knob also adjusts the air speed in both blower and vacuum mode.

How We Tested It

The Product Testing Team, led by associate product testers Sheri Kaz and Dylan Fischer, took the Toro Ultra Blower Vac into the Testing Lab to see whether it could meet the demands of a fall cleanup. They carefully assessed its assembly and setup, as well as its performance as both a leaf blower and leaf vacuum. Of all the units they tested, the Toro Ultra Blower Vac’s user manual was their least favorite. Unclear instructions made assembly more difficult, especially when it came time to attach one piece in particular. “There’s a detached ‘bottom inlet cover’ that needs to be attached, and the directions that supposedly explain how to do so are very poor,” explains Kaz.

Fhma24 Toro Ultra Leaf Blower Vac Annamarie Higley 01 Ssedit

Once they finished their initial assembly, however, the team was impressed by the unit’s ergonomics, noting that the two handles are nice to hold and the built-in cord management system is well designed and secure.

To test the Toro’s performance, our team scattered dry leaves around a yard, then blew them into a designated 4×10-foot area, evaluating the blower’s directional control, ease of use and noise level. According to our testers, this unit performed best when kept at exactly the right angle. “Blowing capabilities are a lot weaker,” notes Kaz. “You need to be at a pretty low angle to get the best performance from this one’s blowing function. Dylan was bent over much of the time when using this machine.”

After they finished blowing the leaves, Fischer and Kaz set out to test the vacuum function on the Toro Ultra Blower Vac. To convert the machine from a leaf blower to a leaf vacuum, they had to swap the blower tube for the vacuum tube and press the fan inlet cover into place. While it seemed easy enough, it required a bit of elbow grease from Fischer. “It was a little finicky to convert the blower to the vacuum. The plastic fittings were not smooth, which made us wonder if we were doing something wrong,” explains Kaz. “We referred back to the user manual several times while using and it took both of Dylan’s hands to press this fan inlet cover into placeit was very stiff.”

Fhma24 Toro Ultra Leaf Blower Vac Annamarie Higley 03 Ssedit

To test the Toro’s vacuum capabilities, the team spread roughly 30 gallons of leaves across two rectangles of grass. One rectangle they covered in dry leaves while the other had damp leaves which they’d misted with a hose. Our testers timed how long it took to suck up each rectangle’s leaves while evaluating the machine’s ergonomics, maneuverability, noise level and more. According to Kaz and Fischer’s report, it took just under three minutes to suck up all of the dry leaves and about one minute to suck up the wet ones. Fischer and Kaz agree that it was much easier to use the Toro Ultra Blower Vac as a leaf vacuum than as a leaf blower.

Despite some setbacks, our Product Testing Team recommends the Toro Ultra Blower Vac to anyone shopping on a budget. Given its low price point, vacuum performance and maneuverability, it’s a great value overall. “The placement of the grip handles allow for solid maneuverability, which ended up being very useful as we had to bend over to get the best performance out of the blowing function,” says Fischer.

Pros

  • Under $100
  • Lightweight
  • Two grip handles enhance maneuverability
  • Versatile power-adjustment knob
  • Sturdy metal impeller

Cons

  • Weak blowing performance
  • Cumbersome to alternate between functions

Why You Should Trust Us

Our editors and testers on the Product Testing Team have years of experience in the commerce space. Many of us are also homeowners or renters with yards of our own to keep clean. We’ve tested dozens of leaf blowers and leaf vacuums including the best backpack leaf blowers and cordless leaf blowers in order to help you make informed decisions before you buy.

FAQ

How does Toro Blower Vac work?

The Toro Ultra Blower Vac pushes out air at a speed of 260 miles per hour (MPH) in order to blow leaves and other debris away from your house, garden and driveway. In vacuum mode, it sucks leaves and other debris in through the main tube. It then finely mulches leaves through a sturdy metal impeller and deposits them into the attached bag. When you’re finished, simply empty the mulched leaves into a disposable bag or compost pile.

How do you turn the Toro Ultra Blower Vac into a blower?

Once assembled, the Toro Ultra Blower Vac is a blower by default. It has a fan inlet cover which is held in place by a quick-release latch. This cover must be attached or detached in order to switch between blower and vacuum functions.

What Other Reviewers Had to Say

The Toro Ultra Blower Vac has over 5,650 five-star ratings on Amazon. Here’s what real users have to say about it.

After six months of use, five-star reviewer Gabriel’s Dad calls the Toro Ultra Blower Vac a must have for yard work. “I used this in the fall to vacuum up and disintegrate the leaves that were all over my yard. This thing did it wonderfully,” he raves. “A big pile of leaves piled about 3 feet tall was reduced to a dense pile of pieces that barely came halfway up one of those paper lawn yard-waste bags. Amazing.”

Another Amazon customer and verified purchaser calls this an amazing tool. “As a leaf vacuum and mulcher, it’s a huge time saver. We have two large trees in our front yard and we usually spend six man hours raking and packing leaves every fall. I also run the mower at different times during the fall to mulch smaller leaf drops. I did the whole yard by myself in about three hours, and collected some 400 lbs of leaves,” they write. “The bag looks like it could get heavy, but by the time it’s full, it’s rarely more than 10 or 15 lbs. The leaves are chopped up pretty well.”

And five-star reviewer Lar P swears that in their 60-plus years, this Toro Ultra Blower Vac is the best they’ve ever had. “This thing moves leavesand here is a big tip with this Toro, dont impede the speed with any of the end nozzlesjust let this thing blow unabated, and do the work for you,” they write.

Product Comparison

Our Product Testing Team tested a total of six blower vacuum combos, including the Toro Ultra Blower Vac. They crowned this unit the best budget option for its affordability, maneuverability and performance. Other corded styles we tested were double the price of the Toro. Of course, you could opt for a gas-powered leaf blower or heavy-duty machine like the Billy Goat Leaf Vacuum, but expect to pay upwards of $200.

Final Verdict

The Toro Ultra Blower Vac offers a fast and inexpensive way to keep your yard free of leaves and other debris. This versatile blower vac is lightweight, easy to maneuver and gets the job done. But most importantly, it saves a ton of time, leaving you free to enjoy your days off however you please.

Where to Buy the Toro Ultra Blower Vac

According to the manufacturer’s website, the Toro Ultra Blower Vac retails for $80, though we’ve found it closer to $100 across stores. It’s currently available at Walmart, Ace Hardware, Lowe’s and Amazon.

There’s no denying that fall foliage is a sight to behold–at least while it’s still on the trees. But when all those leaves start to blanket your lawn and gardens, that’s another story. One of the fastest ways to combat a yard full of leaves is by investing in a good leaf blower orlawn vacuum. But if you don’t have the room or the budget for multiple tools, then you’ll want to pick up a leaf blower and vacuum combo.

One of our favorite leaf blowers that also functions as a leaf vacuum is the Craftsman backpack leaf blower. It’s powerful, easy to use and budget-friendly. In order to see how well this Craftsman backpack blower stands up to a mountain of leaves, we sent it to our testing lab for close inspection. Heres everything you need to know about this model before you add it to your arsenal of lawn equipment.

What is the Craftsman Backpack Leaf Blower?

The Craftsman backpack leaf blower is an electric leaf blower. It has a 12-inch cord and is a true backpack-style lawn tool with two straps, making it less cumbersome than a sling bag. This leaf blower boasts a powerful 12-amp motor with a velocity and air volume of up to 450 cubic feet per minute (CFM). When it comes to speed, this tool can shoot air out at 260 miles per hour (MPH).

At under 12 pounds, this Craftsman backpack blower is lightweight and incredibly easy to use and maneuver, thanks to its user-friendly handles. But that’s not the only reason we love it so much. This Craftsman blower also functions as a leaf vacuum.

“Vacuums are effective when cleaning up smaller spaces and tight areas. For example, cleaning leaves in bushes,” explains Francisco Fuenmayor, a handyman and home improvement expert at LocalProBook. “A leaf blower won’t be able to blow the leaves out of there, while blowers are better for quickly moving large amounts of debris across bigger spaces.”

No tools are required to switch this from blower to vacuum mode. In vacuum mode, it sucks up and mulches up to 55 liters of leaves into the backpack. Once the bag is full, simply open it up and dump all of the mulched debris out. Yard work has never been so easy! Keep reading for a full breakdown of the Craftsman backpack blower’s features and to find out why it’s one of the best backpack leaf blowers we’ve tested.

Craftsman Backpack Leaf Blower

The Craftsman backpack leaf blower also functions as a leaf vacuum for quick and easy cleanup.

Craftsman Backpack Leaf Blower Features

Versatility

As mentioned above, the Craftsman backpack blower functions as both a leaf blower and a leaf vacuum. In order to switch between functions, all you have to do is switch the tubes and twist open the fan cover. The fan cover is attached to the machine so you don’t lose it, and no tools are required.

Engine Power and Blowing Force

The Craftsman backpack blower is pretty powerful given its size and price point. Its 12-amp motor allows it to clear tough debris like wet leaves and pebbles. It moves air at 450 cubic feet per minute (CFM). “A strong blower with good CFM is great for cleaning hard-to-reach corners and gathering debris from garden beds into neat piles on the lawn,” explains Fuenmayor. Additionally, the Craftsman backpack blower blows air at up to 260 MPH. A higher MPH increases the distance you are able to clear.

Holding Crafstman Backpack

Mulching Capabilities

In vacuum mode, the Craftsman backpack blower’s plastic impeller shreds debris into mulch and deposits it into the backpack. According to the manufacturer, this machine shreds leaves and reduces their volume by a ratio of 12:01. During testing, our testers noted that this blower mulched the leaves very finely.

Warranty

The Craftsman backpack blower is covered by a three-year limited warranty. This means that for three years following the date of purchase or date of delivery of the product (whichever date is later), this machine is warrantied against defects in material or workmanship. This warranty is extended only to the original end-user purchaser of the product. Read more about Craftsman’s warranty policy here.

How We Tested It

The product testing team, led by associate product testers Sheri Kaz and Dylan Fischer, took this Craftsman backpack blower into our testing lab to see what it’s really made of. They looked at how easy it was to assemble and how well it performed as both a leaf blower and a leaf vacuum.

Using Craftsman Backpack 2

Assembly

Our testers ran into some initial hiccups during the assembly process, noting that the plastic pieces didn’t click into place as satisfyingly as they would have liked. However, they describe the process itself as pretty straightforward. Once it was assembled and ready to go, our testers especially liked the ergonomic handles which allowed them to get a good grip before they started blowing.

Leaf Blowing

To test the Craftsman’s performance as a leaf blower, our team scattered dry leaves around the yard, then blew them into a designated 4-by-10-foot area before vacuuming, evaluating the blower’s directional control, ease of use and noise level. Our testers were really impressed by the power behind this blower. However, it was a bit too powerful at times. “It would be nice if there were multiple speed levels, because the one will blow your pile all around as you get closer to it,” says Kaz. Additionally, this leaf blower registered 106.5 decibels. In other words, it’s loud! Ear and eye protection are strongly recommended.

Vacuuming

After they finished blowing the leaves, our testers set out to test the vacuum function on the Craftsman backpack blower. To convert the machine from a leaf blower to a leaf vacuum, Kaz and Fisher had to swap the blower tube for the vacuum tube and twist open the fan cover, which is attached to the machine so you don’t lose it. Though easy in theory, Kaz and Fischer struggled a bit here, noting that the tubes don’t really click into place. But after double-checking the user manual, they were back in business.

Emptying Craftsman Backpack 2

For this test, our testers spread roughly 30 gallons of leaves across two rectangles of grass. They covered one rectangle in dry leaves and the other had damp leaves, which had been misted with a hose. Our testers timed how long it took to suck up each rectangle’s leaves while evaluating the ergonomics, maneuverability, noise level and more.

According to Kaz and Fischer’s report, it took just under three minutes to suck up all of the dry leaves and just over one minute to suck up all of the wet leaves. Upon emptying the bag, they noted that the leaves had been very finely mulched.

Comfort

As for comfort, Fischer points out that the unit itself gets pretty heavy to use for an extended length of time. Luckily, the overall backpack design helped. “The backpack is nice on this one because it’s a full backpack that goes over both shoulders,” he says. “It provides a lot of relief from the weight.”

Overall, our product testing team highly recommends the Craftsman backpack blower. It was a top performer in the lab and is both easy and comfortable to use. “The two-strapped backpack-style bag works amazingly well and should be the standard for all these handheld vacuums. It’s a great way to equally distribute weight and goes a long way to mitigate fatigue,” raves Fischer.

And for less than $100, you simply can’t go wrong.

Using Craftsman Backpack

Pros:

  • Functions as a leaf blower and a leaf vacuum
  • Two-strapped backpack provides relief from the weight of the unit
  • Powerful performance
  • Finely mulches leaves and debris it vacuums
  • Under $100
  • Ergonomic handles

Cons:

  • Not cordless
  • Plastic pieces don’t readily click into place

Why You Should Trust Us

Our editors and testers on the product testing team have years of experience in the commerce space. We’ve tested dozens of leaf blowers and leaf vacuums, including the Husqvarna Backpack Blower, Stihl BR 600 Backpack Blower and the Ego Leaf Blower. And we don’t plan on stopping there! Currently, we are testing more leaf blowers and leaf vacuums to ensure we help you make informed decisions based on real-life testing before you buy.

To further discuss the benefits and uses of leaf blowers and vacuums, we also enlisted the expertise of Francisco Fuenmayor, a handyman and home improvement expert at LocalProBook.

FAQ

What kind of gas does a Craftsman backpack leaf blower take?

This Craftsman backpack blower is electric and does not take gas.

Why won’t my Craftsman backpack blower start?

First, make sure your Craftsman backpack blower is plugged in. The cord on this model is only 12 inches long, so an extension cord may be required.

If that doesn’t work, check the fan cover. “Initially, you have to turn the cover to lock it into place in order for the machine to turn on,” explains Fischer. “We didn’t realized this, so the machine wouldn’t start after several tries. Finally, after about five attempts and referring to the user manual, it seemed that whatever was hanging it up resolved itself and we were able to click the cover into place.”

What kind of oil goes in a Craftsman?

This Craftsman backpack blower does not require oil.

What Other Reviewers and Experts Had to Say

Five-star reviewer Robert T Kennedy appreciates how well this unit cleans his yard without sucking up expensive decorative stones. “I liked the multiple options for the leaf blower,” he writes. “One piece of equipment keeps my lawn, garden, walkways and driveway clean with its powerful motor. Definitely worth the reasonable price.”

Micray, another five-star reviewer, calls the Craftsman backpack blower a back-saver. “This has been such a lifesaver trying to clean up. My backyard had hundreds of those little bitty gumballs, and this has made picking them up so much easier,” they write.

After running into some of the same issues as our product testing team in regards to getting the pieces into place, verified user Girly Gamer is happy to have figured it out. “It ended up working beautifully on the vacuum part which is all I wanted. Great power, bag is comfortable and holds A LOT! It is fairly heavy, but with the two handles, it’s not too bad,” they write. “Saved me big time from raking and bending over to pick up piles of pine needles which had been building up for a year! Even mulched pine cones and twigs fine…”

Product Comparison

Our product testing team tested a total of six blower vacuum combos including the Craftsman backpack blower. They labeled this unit the best overall for its performance, two-strap backpack style and good value. We also tested the Toro Ultra Blower Vac, another corded model which functions as a blower and a vacuum. The Craftsman and the Toro are both similarly sized and priced, there was a significant difference in performance.

The Craftsman backpack blower has a velocity and air volume of up to 450 cubic feet per minute (CFM) and expels air at 260 miles per hour (MPH). The Toro, on the other hand, has a velocity and air volume of 340 CFM in blow mode and 405 CFM in vac mode. And though the Toro boasts the same 260 MPH as the Craftsman, our testers found the Toro’s blowing performance to be much weaker than the Craftsman backpack blower.

Additionally, the Craftsman backpack blower has a two-strapped backpack-style bag which makes it easy to tote around the yard. The Toro has one strap which you can sling over your shoulder. Though not uncomfortable, it’s not as convenient as the Craftsman backpack blower.

Final Verdict

If you’re looking for an inexpensive way to keep your yard neat and tidy, you can’t go wrong with the Craftsman backpack blower. This versatile blower is comfortable, easy to use and powerful enough to get the job done. In short, you can expect your lawn to look like a million bucks all autumn long thanks to this handy backpack blower.

A very easy way to define a flower bed or a walkway is with landscape edging. Edging comes in many materials, including plastic, wood and my personal favorite- metal.

Besides helping to define a garden’s edge and keeping things such as dirt, mulch or stones in place, metal edging has many upsides. It is easy to calculate, and the actual material is flexible, which means it takes curves easily. It is also relatively easy to cut with a cut-off wheel and angle grinder and comes in a few different colors to choose from.

Installing metal edging is an easy project with the physical demand of being on your hands and knees for the duration. With all landscaping projects remember, slow and steady wins the race. Wear kneepads, pace yourself, plan for more time than you anticipate and drink lots of fluids as you go. Happy gardening!

Lay out the area

Before cutting your lawn, you will want a visual reference to ensure placement. Define a specific line where you plan to install your metal edging by spraying with a colored landscape marking spray paint. This spray paint is designed for use in an inverted position for marking construction and landscape projects. It works great on exterior surfaces such as concrete, blacktop, gravel, soil and grass.

The post Billy Goat Leaf Vacuum Review appeared first on Family Handyman.

Crisp air, pumpkin spice, apple cider and brightly colored foliage are synonymous with Fall. What’s not to love? Well, if you’re a homeowner, then the answer to that question is an ankle-deep sea of leaves covering your lawn.

Not only do they make your yard look unkempt, but they can produce mold, hinder new growth and provide shelter for pests. Of course, you can use a rake or a leaf blower to clean up fallen leaves. Or, you can opt for a leaf vacuum. The best leaf vacuums suck up fallen leaves and condense them into bags for quick and easy cleanup.

“Vacuums are more effective for cleaning up smaller spaces and tight areas,” explains Francisco Fuenmayor, an insured handyman at LocalProBook. “For example, cleaning leaves in bushes. A leaf blower won’t be able to blow the leaves out of there.” Fuenmayor goes on to add that leaf vacuums are a quick and effective way to get rid of leaves.

We tested close to a dozen leaf vacuums and found one that stood out among the rest: the Billy Goat Leaf & Litter Vacuum. This machine has the ability to clear your yard in no time and we don’t think you’d even break a sweat. Heres everything you need to know about the Billy Goat leaf vacuum.

What is the Billy Goat Leaf & Litter Vacuum?

The Billy Goat Leaf & Litter Vacuum is a gas-powered, walk-behind leaf vacuum. Powerful suction allows it to clean up huge piles of leaves and other backyard debris and its intuitive design makes it easy to use. In spite of its bulk and weight it weighs in at 112 pounds this self-propelled machine is surprisingly easy to maneuver. That’s because most of its casing is plastic, so it’s easy to tilt the machine back and take sharp turns.

Another reason we love this machine? It’s loaded with extra features including an on-board 2-inch chipper, optional hose kit and shredding screen, caster kit, liner sleeve and felt bag. You can even adjust the height to best suit the surface you’re working on. Read on for more on the Billy Goat Leaf & Litter Vacuum’s features.

Billy Goat Leaf & Litter VacuumTMB STUDIO

we tried it

Billy Goat Leaf & Litter Vacuum

This self-propelled, gas-powered machine has a five-blade serrated metal impeller and on-board 2-inch chipper to handle large fall cleanups.

Billy Goat Leaf & Litter Vacuum Features

Zipperless Bag

Rather than fumbling with a zipper, the Billy Goat leaf vacuum uses two bottom-loading, marine-style clasps. This allows you to easily open and close the bag when dumping debris. “The snapping pieces work way better than a zipper,” says the product testing team. “The bag comes on and off easily from the machine once you figure it out the first time.”

Integral Dust Skirt

The dust skirt, which is made of breathable mesh, keeps dust down and away from you as you walk behind the vacuum. An optional felt bag is available for even better dust control. Just note that a new felt bag requires a break-in period. According to our testers, this entails running the unit at half throttle for the first half-hour on a clean hard surface.

This will allow the air coming in through the nozzle to create effective pathways through the pores of the bag. If these pores become blocked, the overall suction power of the unit will be greatly diminished. We completed this process on concrete.

5-Blade Serrated Impeller

This blade mulches everything the crosses its path, maximizing both suction and debris reduction.

On-Board 2-Inch Chipper

An optional on-board 2-inch chipper allows you to add branches for even more thorough cleanups.

How We Tested It

The Billy Goat leaf vacuum was a freight delivery and arrived on a pallet. To our surprise, it arrived fully assembled and even had some gas in it. Our first order of business was to complete the bag break-in period. As mentioned above, this necessary break-in period required us to set the machine on concrete and run it at half throttle for the first half-hour. The process is to allow the air in through the nozzle to create effective pathways through the pores of the bag.

Billy Goat Leaf & Litter Vacuum

We then set out to see what this machine was really made of. We scattered roughly 30 gallons of leaves across two 10-by-4 rectangles of grass. One rectangle had have dry leaves, and the other had wet leaves. Our testers recorded the time it took the Billy Goat leaf vacuum to such up each set of leaves on the highest setting.

For both the wet and dry leaf test, the Billy Goat passed with flying colors, sucking up everything in its path in just two passes. “Of the two walk-behind vacs we tested, this one is much more comfortable to push around. The weight feels more evenly distributed and it’s much easier to make turns with,” explains the product testing team. “Pulling the clutch bar will also propel this thing. It can easily fly out from your hands if you’re not ready for it.”

Once everything had been sucked up, it was time to empty the bag. Though the zipperless design makes it easy to remove the bag, our testers found it difficult to do alone due to its bulk.

Billy Goat Leaf & Litter Vacuum emptying bag

“Emptying the bag is hard because it was bulky even halfway full,” explains the product testing team. “It’s a two-person job to remove the bag when it’s full. It’s too large to empty into a paper leaf bag or a standard-size trash can, and we had to use multiple receptacles to clear this one fully. It would be much easier to dump this one directly on a compost pile.”

Another thing to consider is the fact that the wet leaves left stains near the top of the felt bag where it connects to the vacuum. And while our testers note that this doesn’t bear any effect on the actual performance of the machine, it is pretty unsightly.

Pros:

  • Maneuverable
  • Excellent performance
  • Handles huge piles of dry and wet leaves
  • Built-in chipper
  • Mulches as it vacuums

Cons:

  • Bag is incredibly bulky when full
  • Wet leaves can stain the bag
  • Pricey

FAQ

Will a Billy Goat vacuum pick up wet leaves?

Yes! We used the Billy Goat leaf vacuum on roughly 15 gallons of leaves that had been misted with a hose. It sucked them all up in under a minute, though wet leaves did stain the felt bag. That said, Fuenmayor cautions that wet leaves are heavier and can clog the vacuum more easily, requiring more frequent maintenance and clearing. He suggests waiting for the leaves to dry as much as possible before vacuuming.

Does the Billy Goat vacuum pick up acorns?

Yes. According to Fuenmayor, leaf vacuums can handle small debris like acorns, twigs, and pine needles. However, larger or very hard objects like small stones may damage the machine or clog the vacuum. He recommends familiarizing yourself with the models specifications for debris size limitations.

How to use a Billy Goat leaf vacuum?

During testing, our product testing team found that the Billy Goat leaf vacuum is quite intuitive. All you have to do is start it up and push it around your yard until all of the leaves and other small debris are gone. Then empty the bag and you’re good to go until your next cleanup.

What Other Reviewers and Experts Had to Say

Admittedly, the Billy Goat leaf vacuum doesn’t have a ton of reviews. In fact, Amazon user JW almost didn’t buy this leaf vacuum for that very reason. “I have been eyeing this machine for the past year or two and always decided not to buy it due to lack of reviews,” writes JW in his five-star Amazon review. However, he took a chance on this machine and was glad he did. “This unit has more than met my expectations. It can quickly and easily handle tons of leaves, twigs, trash, acorns, and stray mulch,” he raves. “…It is infinitely faster than a rake. After about an hour, I had cleaned up half of my backyard, a task that would have taken me four or five hours by hand.”

According to verified user Richard O’Brien, the Billy Goat leaf vacuum is the best he’s owned over the year in his five-star review. And yet another refers to the Billy Goat leaf vacuum as “a tough little machine.”

Billy Goat Lawn & Litter Vacuum vs. DR Leaf and Lawn Vacuum

Our experts on the product testing team tested two leaf vacuums: The Billy Goat Lawn & Litter Vacuum and the DR Leaf and Lawn Vacuum. While the team loved the DR lawn vacuum’s chipper, they found that it was more difficult to maneuver than the Billy Goat lawn vacuum. While the Billy Goat is self-propelled and easy to to move and turn, our testers noted that the DR is too stiff to be able to easily tilt the machine back for quick turns.

Moreover, the DR is harder to start. “The big issue here is the choke lever. It’s a flimsy-feeling piece of metal that you’re told needs to be pushed inward,” explains the product testing team. “In reality, it needs to be pulled more to the side when starting the engine, then slowly released per the engine noises until it sounds good. There’s a choke lever on the Billy Goat as well, but it’s way more automated, as it’s just a flip of a switch.”

Additionally, there’s the issue of dust. According to Fuenmayor, leaf vacuums can create a lot of dust in hot, dry weather. “The dust passes through the bags membrane and sticks to any exposed, sweaty skin, leaving you dirty,” he says. Our testers didn’t run into any noteworthy issues with dust while using the Billy Goat lawn vacuum. But when testing the DR, Fischer took quite a bit of dust to the face. “No matter what amount of leaves you’re running over, you WILL be taking some debris to the face due to the tubing that spits out debris toward the top of the vacuum instead of the bottom,” says the Product Testing Team.

Overall, the Billy Goat lawn vacuum is the better choice here because of its performance and ease of use.

Final Verdict

Billy Goat Leaf & Litter Vacuum Final verdict

If you have a big lawn that requires heavy-duty equipment, then youll find a lot to like about Billy Goats surprisingly maneuverable walk-behind leaf vacuum, says associate product tester Dylan Fischer. And there certainly is a lot to like. Between the large 40 gallon bag, built-in chipper and 5-blade impeller that mulches leaves and debris as it sucks them up, the Billy Goat leaf vacuum will have your yard clean in no time.

Best Overall

Sun Home Luminar 2-Person Full-Spectrum Infrared Sauna

Pros:

  • Full-spectrum infrared technology provides therapeutic benefits without feeling overheated
  • Durable aluminum exterior and heat-treated, cedar wood interior
  • Bluetooth connectivity with built-in speakers
  • Chromotherapy, color-changing LED lighting
  • Mobile-app-enabled control system
  • Safe EMF/ELF shielding technology
  • Optional installation (for added fee)
  • Amazing and quick customer service

Cons:

  • Sauna roof corners are very sharp, resulting in the tearing of the protective cover (a known issue that they are currently working to resolve)

Shopping editor Nancy Snyder tested the Sun Home Saunas Luminar, a two-person, full-spectrum infrared sauna. It measures 57 inches wide by 51.5 inches deep by 82.7 inches high. Its more than spacious enough to comfortably accommodate two people (or, if you prefer the extra space, just yourself), Nancy says.

Fhma24 Sun Home Saunas Ancy Snyder 07 Ssedit

This sauna features bench seating and a Bluetooth surround sound system, along with impressive features like a mobile-app-enabled control system to adjust the sauna settings from your phone. Other features include an oxygen ionizer to purify the air, cup holders, a towel rack, a tablet holder and a magazine rack. The powerful sauna has six full-spectrum infrared heaters, medical-grade chromotherapy LED lighting, and ultra-low EMF/ELF shielding for the industry’s lowest and safest electromagnetic field exposure.

After ordering the sauna, Nancy opted for Sun Home Saunas third-party installation crew, Pure Install, to come out and assist with installation. This runs about $1,100 to $1,300 for the two-person Luminar model.

Nancy says the two-person team did an impeccable job, assembling the sauna in roughly two hours and discarding the pallets and trash when they left. However, she realized later that the Luminar 2-Person Sauna requires a dedicated 240-volt, 20-amp GFCI (Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter), which a licensed electrician must install.

The required electrical wiring ended up costing Nancy an additional $1,350. But it was all worth it. I could easily see adding this to my daily routine,” she says. “Not only did I feel so much better after one session, but research suggests that infrared saunas may have a number of health benefits when used long-term. I was overly impressed with the experience.

Sunjoy Gazebo Review: I Tried a 15-Foot Octagon Gazebo in My Backyard; Here’s How It Went https://www.familyhandyman.com/article/sunjoy-gazebo-review/ Wed, 04 Sep 2024 18:12:08 +0000 Thinking about buying a gazebo? Check out our review of this Sunjoy Gazebo, which I had installed in my own backyard.

A gazebo can instantly transform your backyard scene and boost your resale value. Plus, they offer practical advantages, like additional shade and shelter from the rain. From barbecues to birthday parties, the right gazebo provides a designated, covered area for gatherings.

If youve shopped for gazebos, you know there are endless options when it comes to materials, shape and size. Generally, if you want a more permanent fixture, you should go with a metal or wooden gazebo. If you want something more portable and can move from one spot in the yard to another, a soft-top gazebo might be the way to go (theyre also typically more affordable).

We selected this Sunjoy Hardtop Octagon Gazebo to install as a permanent fixture in our backyard. Below is our full review of the Sunjoy Gazebo, from delivery and assembly to product details and more.

What is a Sunjoy Outdoor Hardtop Gazebo?

Sunjoy is an outdoor furniture and gazebo brand founded in 2001. For over 20 years, the brand has manufactured high-quality outdoor products designed to last for years. They offer free delivery on all orders and a 30-day return window from the original delivery date. Sunjoy makes a variety of gazebo styles, including hard-top, soft-top, pop-up, wall-mounted and more. Sunjoy also offers gazebos in various materials, including metal, wood and aluminum.

The Sunjoy Outdoor Hardtop Gazebo we installed in our backyard is made of metal, specifically steel for the roof and galvanized pipe for the legs. It is octagonal and features a double-tiered top for ventilation and wind resistance. The entire structure sports an aesthetic matte black finish. Its perfect for expanding your entertainment area outside and is a permanent structure if you anchor the legs.

  • Some reviews note issues with customer service

Sunjoy Outdoor Hardtop Gazebo Product Features

Here’s a look at some of the standout features, good and bad, you can expect if you choose to purchase this Sunjoy gazebo.

Materials

The Sunjoy Outdoor Hardtop Gazebo features all-steel construction. Specifically, the roof is made of steel, while the legs are made of galvanized pipe. Sunjoy offers similar hard-top gazebos with metal roofs and wooden legs if you want a gazebo that will blend in on top of a deck or other wooden structure.

Fhma24 Sunjoy Outdoor Hard Top Gazebo Mary Henn 03 Ssedit

The steel structure is very sturdy and weather-resistant. The gazebo we tested has faced Midwestern winds, storms and heat, and it still looks as good as new. Anchoring the gazebo legs in the ground helps keep it in place during severe weather, too.

Size

The hard-top octagon gazebo has a diameter of about 15 feet, and its legs measure about 6-1/2 feet tall and 4-1/2 feet apart. The entire structure stands about 11 feet tall and weighs over 500 pounds. It can withstand 50 MPH winds and over 4,000 pounds of snow. Talk about sturdy! Underneath the gazebo, you can easily fit a standard-size picnic table or a few lounge chairs.

Design

The gazebos two-tiered roof allows airflow while shielding off weather by protecting whats underneath it from UV rays and allowing wind to pass through the top. The built-in dual rails let you easily hang mosquito netting or curtains, and the ceiling hook lets you hang suspended lighting. The durable matte black coating is made to withstand sun, rain and snow while providing a modern look.

How We Tested It

Fhma24 Sunjoy Outdoor Hard Top Gazebo Mary Henn 02 Ssedit

The Sunjoy Outdoor Hardtop Gazebo was delivered to our house via semi-truck. It was a pallet delivery, which the drivers dropped in the front yard. We did not have the option of getting it delivered to the backyard, where we wanted it. I recommend contacting Sunjoys customer support team if you order a large, heavy gazebo and want it delivered to a designated area. They might be able to accommodate you. I did not do that, and the delivery weighed over 500 pounds, so I could not move the pallet alone.

I did not anticipate the size and weight of the item, because when I was shopping for a gazebo, I originally had selected a smaller, lighter gazebo from Sunjoy. However, I was sent the larger octagon gazebo instead. After realizing the size of the gazebo, I knew Id need help moving and assembling it.

The instructions recommended a team of five people, which I did not have available. So, I used Thumbtack to find a construction pro to move, assemble and anchor the gazebo in the backyard. Living in the Midwest, I needed to anchor the gazebo, especially since I was having it installed during storm season. I didn’t want to risk strong winds damaging the gazebo or its surroundings.

I took many bids from different construction pros for the project. In my area, the most affordable rate was $1,750 for the entire job. However, the cheaper rate came at an additional, unexpected cost. The job was done poorlyconcrete was thrown onto the fence and left in the yard, and the concrete used to anchor the gazebos posts was laid inconsistently and far above the grass.

That said, the gazebo was moved and assembled quickly, looks level, and is very sturdy. If you have the means, Id recommend hiring vetted pros to assemble and anchor your hard-top gazebo.

Additionally, because the gazebo I was sent was larger than I expected, it did not fit on our patio. So, we had to assemble it adjacent to the patio in a grassy area. We havent entirely decided how to use that space, but we plan to either extend the patio or install some other kind of outdoor flooring and make that an outdoor dining area.

While the installation process was a headache, the product is fantastic. Its a large, sturdy gazebo that has already held up against numerous storms. The dimensions are true to those listed in the product description, and the matte black finish looks sleek and high quality. If youre serious about revamping your outdoor space, Sunjoy consistently produces gazebos of excellent quality.

FAQ

How do you anchor a Sunjoy gazebo to concrete?

Sunjoy gazebos already have holes in their feet so that you can secure them to a concrete surface with a bolt. I opted to pour new concrete around the legs to keep them in place, since I assembled the structure on grass.

What is the lifespan of a gazebo?

Most metal gazebos are resistant to rust thanks to galvanization and/or a weather-resistant coating, and can withstand severe weather. If properly secured, they can last up to 15 years.

What Others Have to Say

The Sunjoy Outdoor Hardtop Gazebo has a five-star rating, and reviewers also include pictures of assembled gazebos. Reviewers note the overall quality of the materials, how carefully parts were packaged for delivery and the speedy delivery times. It took reviewers six hours to a day and a half to fully assemble the gazebo, and all reviewers used at least two people and equipment for assembly. Buyers also commented on the scarce instructions, including very few words but many pictures. Reviewers also recommend using a screw gun with metric sockets to put together the parts.

Sunjoy Outdoor Hardtop Gazebo vs. Sunjoy Outdoor Softtop Gazebo

If you want an octagonal gazebo but are on a tighter budget, consider this Outdoor Softop Gazebo. It has the same shape as the Outdoor Hardtop Gazebo but retails for a fraction of the price. It’s also 11 by 13 feet, so it’s a bit smaller than the 15-by-15-foot gazebo we tested. The Outdoor Softtop Gazebo has high customer ratings and the same durable structure as the hardtop one. It includes a ventilated top, ceiling hook, and mesh netting to keep bugs out.

Sunjoy sells a variety of soft-top gazebos. While metal gazebos are more durable, longer-lasting and weather-resistant, soft-top gazebos also have perks. They are usually easier to assemble and move and are often less permanent. Additionally, soft-top gazebos typically cost much less than their hard-top counterparts.

Final Verdict

If youre looking for a top-notch, hard-top gazebo, then Sunjoy is a great place to start shopping. Sunjoys vast inventory and commitment to crafting high-quality gazebos puts it ahead of the competition. While you may have to consider hiring professional assemblydepending on the size and type of gazebo you buy and how you want it installedyou can count on Sunjoy to deliver on quality. If opting for a hard-top gazebo over a soft-top gazebo, we recommend anchoring it securely to keep it in place.

Utility boots have come a long way over the decades. Previously associated with being obnoxiously heavy and having an annoying steel plate that seemed destined to pierce through your foot rather than save it, gone are the days of lacklusterwork boots with only safety in mind.

Manufacturers have gone to great lengths to not only make them even safer but also more comfortable and, dare I say, attractive. Modern work boots claim to be safer, lighter and better fittingand can be worn all day. Could it possibly be true?

Keen Utility’s Evanston boot is one of those new-era utility boots that challenge misconceptions. I tried them to see if they could withstand my everyday tasks and meet industrial standards. I was thrilled with these boots, so read on to hear why.

What is the Keen Utility Evanston Work Boot?

Keen Utility designed the Evanston work boot to meet the needs of many professionals. However, I found it practical for any application where comfort and safety are paramount. Keen Utility states that the work boot is great for assembly line workers, electricians, the aerospace industry and light manufacturing.

The boots tick all the boxes for standard work boots, with safety and meeting standards being the highest priorities. Theyre a six-inch high waterproof boot suitable for many manufacturing and construction situations. Durable leather offers the wearer protection and makes the boots visually appealing.

Keen Utility Evanston Work Boot Features

The Keen Utility Evanston Work Boot stands out with a suite of high-performance features designed for durability and safety. This boot is not only oil, slip and heat resistant, but also boasts a carbon-fiber toe. This makes them a lighter alternative to traditional steel toes while maintaining robust protection. Rated for electrostatic discharge (ESD), the boot ensures safe use in environments where static electricity is a concern.

The boot’s six-inch ankle height provides essential protection and stability, a crucial aspect both industrial settings and demanding work environments. The heat-resistant outsole further enhances durability, allowing the boot to withstand high temperatures without compromising performance or comfort.

The Keen Utility Evanston is equipped with Keen.ReGEN technology, a proprietary sole designed to offer 50% more energy return compared to standard foam soles. This technology helps reduce fatigue and increases comfort during long hours on your feet. Additionally, the boot features a 90-degree heel (half an inch) that contributes to its stability and balance.

The eyelets are constructed from plastic rather than metal, minimizing the risk of marring highly finished surfacesa thoughtful detail for professionals working with delicate materials. The boots also have reflective elements for enhanced visibility in low-light conditions.

The leather used is barnyard resistant, meaning it effectively withstands the detrimental effects of common livestock-related hazards like oleic acid and urea.

Furthermore, the Leather Working Group certifies the leather as “environmentally preferred,” which ensures that the tanneries adhere to rigorous environmental standards, including waste management and greenhouse gas reduction.

As an extra bonus, the boots are PFA-free and contain no “forever chemicals.”

How We Tested the Keen Utility Evanston Work Boot

Fhma24 Keen Evanston Work Boot Pamela Bondurant Ssedit 01

The boots arrived by mail in terrific packaginga sturdyboot box that Ill be reusing. The boots were pre-laced and ready to use, so I put them on my feet around 8:30 a.m. As someone who dislikes wearing shoes and only wearsthem as a necessitysomething I equate to foot prisonI didnt even think to take these brand-new boots off my feet for almost 12 hours!

I wear a Euro size 39 with a narrow-to-normal width foot and received a U.S. womens 8.5 medium boot. The fit was perfect, and Keens signature roomy toe box was a welcome relief for my claustrophobic toes and the real or imagined widening of my foot as I age. The cushioned part around the ankle felt comfy and didnt give me that restrictive feeling I get when I revisit my early 90s hipster days and wear my heavy, black ankle boots.

I wasnt going to test the carbon fiber toe for safety as they did once on Myth Busters (anyone else see that episode?), but the toe was clearly fortified. I felt confident that my tootsies were in safe hands and opted out of dropping a toolbox on my foot. Another welcome surprise was that the composite toe was not even noticeable, even as my toes were bent, which is something Ive struggled with in other steel-toed boots.

I spent the remainder of the day doing various chores in these boots. I weeded, ran the string trimmer, cleaned gutters and dug up volunteer lemongrass that was invading my flower beds. I walked on grass, mud and mulch. I even took my daily multi-mile walk on asphalt in these boots because it didnt occur to me to change my shoes.

Keen Utility boasts that the heel design of these boots helps secure the foot in place on ladders. While climbing the ladder to clean my gutters, I felt absolutely confident. While digging with a shovel and on the ladder rungs, the sole’s sturdiness did not cause discomfort or fatigue. As the day went by, I was so very surprised that my ankles also did not feel any chafing or excessive pressure.

Pros:

  • Certified for safety standards and ESD
  • Comfortable
  • Lightweight
  • Environmentally preferred leather
  • Reflective
  • Chemical and biological resistant leather
  • Multiple widths

Cons:

  • No color selection for women
  • Limited sizes in both mens and womens styles

Why Trust Me

Ive been wearing work boots for most of my adult life. Ive lived and worked on an organic farm, worked as a land surveyor in many regulated environments, owned a landscaping company and done gobs of contracting work in painting and basic carpentry. Nothing makes my work easier than comfortable and practical footwear.

As a professional product reviewer, I am committed to considering my needs and those of others when evaluating products. The boots are no exception, and I considered many factors in order to give a fair assessment. I looked at both my personal needs and those of people of different sizes and in various industries.

FAQ

Fhma24 Keen Evanston Work Boot Pamela Bondurant Ssedit 02

Are Keen boots good for work?

There are many types of work boots that are certified for certain industrial uses and safety issues. Many Keen utility boots are approved for these uses and, therefore, are excellent work boots. Keen also has hiking boots and casual boots that may be suitable for certain work environments.

Are Keen shoes good for your feet?

Theyre certainly not bad for your feet! In fact, with the arch support, protection and roomy toe box, your feet are getting the royal treatment as far as footwear goes. Keen utility boots come with a 30-day trial, so if you find that they are not meeting your needs, you can return them.

Are Keen boots waterproof?

Some Keen boots are waterproof. The Evanston boot reviewed is rated as waterproof and is indicated for wet and dry use. If waterproof boots are a must, be sure to check the manufacturers stated uses and capabilities.

What Other Reviewers/Experts Had to Say

LaRita B. gives a5-star review onKeens site, saying, Wide enough!!!!! Yes, finally, Keen listened! These safety-toeboots are wide enough to fit my foot. Thanks, well done.

Vicki Rose, owner of SPC Specialty Products, a woman-owned business serving the manufacturing and energy sectors, says, I wear industrial boots daily for work. This boot meets all the safety requirements, looks good, and even comes in a womens 5, which is perfect for me.

Best boot ever, says Jade P on Keens site. I bought these off of a recommendation from a coworker. So comfortable, even without another insole! My blisters I got from my other boots went away, and because of the composite toe all my ankle pain is gone (because my old boots were too heavy). Seriously the best purchase Ive ever made.

Keens vs. Red Wings

Icompared these boots to a pair of Redwing steel-toed boots that I used to wear for work and found the Keens have far more support and cushioning. Thecarbon fiber toe was not even noticeable on the Keens, as opposed to the discomfort inflicted on my foot by the old-school steel toe.

I also compared the Keen to a newer pair of steel-toed Red Wings side-by-side and found the comfort and styling to be somewhat equal, but the Keen was significantly lighter.

Final Verdict

The extensive listing of safety ratings on this boot makes it viable for almost all work conditions. The wonderful support and comfort allow for all-day wearing without the need to break them in. Its stylish, too. I was unable to come up with really any criticisms of this boot, so I 100% recommend it. Theres nothing to risk thanks to Keen’s 30-day return period, so try out a pair for yourself.

Where to Buy

You can find Keen Utility’s Evanston boot on Amazon and Zappos for around $150. The sizing is accurate, and with Keens 30-day return policy, the risk of buying shoes online is minimized.

46,000 DeWALT Mowers Recalled for Laceration Risk — See If You’re Affected https://www.familyhandyman.com/article/stanley-black-decker-dewalt-mowers-recall/ Fri, 23 Aug 2024 15:44:36 +0000 Thousands of DeWALT mowers are being recalled because of a safety hazard. Find out if you're impacted here.

The post 46,000 DeWALT Mowers Recalled for Laceration Risk — See If You’re Affected appeared first on Family Handyman.

]]>
If you’re a homeowner who relies on a DeWALT battery-powered walk-behind mower to keep your lawn looking sharp, you’ll want to pay close attention: Stanley Black & Decker has issued a recall for certain DeWALT mowers due to a potential laceration hazard. This recall could impact anyone using these mowers, so knowing if your model is affected and what steps to take next is essential.

Read on to learn more about the recall, the risks involved, and what you should do if you own one of the recalled mowers.

Which DeWALT Mowers Are Recalled?

Stanley Black & Decker has recalled over 46,000 lawnmowers (and another nearly 10,000 in Canada). According to the US Consumer Product Safety Commission, the recall impacts the following mowers:

  • 2024 DeWALT Battery 21 Push walk-behind mowers
    • Models: DCMWP234U2, DCMWP600X2
  • DeWALT Battery 21″ Self-Propelled walk-behind mowers
    • Models: DCMWSP256U2, DCMWSP650Y2

Why Are These DeWALT Mowers Recalled?

These DeWALT walk-behind mowers are recalled because, if water gets into the handle support while the battery is installed, the impacted mowers may fail to shut off when the bail handle is released. They may also start without a key, presenting a laceration hazard.

There have been ten reports of mowers failing to shut off and one report of a mower starting without a key, which resulted in a minor finger laceration (no medical attention was required). Still, you shouldn’t ignore this DeWALT mower recall.

How Do I Know If My DeWALT Mower Is Recalled?

To identify if your DeWALT mower is part of the recall, follow these steps:

  • Start by checking its colorthese mowers are black, gray, and yellow with “DeWALT” printed in yellow on the front or side.
  • Next, look for the model number on the rear door of the mower.
  • You’ll also need to find the date code, which is laser-printed in yellow on the mower’s left side, just above the rear wheel. The date code will be in this format: “20XX YY-58,” where “20XX” indicates the year, “YY” is the week, and “58” is the factory code.

If your mower’s date code falls between 2023 32-58 and 2024 13-58, it’s part of the recall. Mowers made after March 2024 (date code 2024 14-58 and later) are unaffected.

What Should I Do If I Have a Recalled DeWALT Mower?

If you own a recalled mower, stop using it immediately (especially if it has gotten wet) and contact Stanley Black & Decker to schedule a free repair at an authorized service center near you.

The post I Tried the Ryobi Cordless String Trimmer and Will String Out the Details for You appeared first on Family Handyman.

]]>
String trimmers are popular tools for lawn maintenance. They’re great for trimming grass around trees, fences and posts. Mowers cant reach those missed corners, and a string trimmer can even edge along the pavement. Many string trimmers work with attachable tools and accept alternatives to string as the trimmer head.

Residential users are switching from traditional gas-powered lawn equipment to electric ones. Why? Battery-operated tools are quiet, require no gas or oil and almost always start. Battery power and longevity have improved over the years, so whats not to love?

But have you ever wondered if cordless string trimmers work as well asgasoline-powered string trimmers? I tested the popular battery-powered Ryobi string trimmer for the past three months, and I have the answers you seek.

What is the Ryobi String Trimmer?

The Ryobi string trimmer is a 40V, 15-inch cordless string trimmer that retails for under $200. For context, the Ryobi brand is The Home Depots economical lineup of tools. Geared towards residential homeowners, this string trimmer tackles lawns of almost any size, depending on the battery you use. Plus, its part of Ryobi’s expand-it collection, which enables the attachment of tools other than the string attachment that was tested in this review.

Ryobi Cordless String Trimmer Features

The Ryobi 15-inch 40V string trimmerincludes a straight shaft string trimmer attachment, a 4-amp-hour battery, a charger and a 0.080-inch line (which can also accept up to 0.095 inches). Ryobis 40V batteries come standard with LED status lights, and the 80-watt charger should charge the battery in a little over 2.5 hours. A 70-minute run timeis advertised.

The tool utilizes a bump feed mechanism to advance the line, which is pretty standard across string trimmers. As mentioned above, the bump head trimmer can be removed and replaced by a bladed, serrated head and the entire lower shaft can be removed and replaced by tools such as a pole saw using the quick change coupler system. The string can be adjusted from 13 to 15 inches, and Ryobi boasts that it reloads in under 60 seconds with its speed winder.

The trigger is variable speed, and the straight shaft is sturdy carbon fiber. While thetool carries a 5-year warranty, the battery only carries a 3-yearwarranty. A brushless motor powers the tool.

How We Tested the Ryobi String Trimmer

Ryobi Cordless String Trimmer

Im testing many string trimmers and comparing them against the same criteria. The first thing I consider is the packaging, assembly, and instructions to get started. I started the battery charging while I assembled and read and noted that the battery took close to three hours to charge, which is something to keep in mind if youre eager to get trimming.

The bump head was already loaded with string, but I needed to attach it to the power head. I struggled a bit with this seemingly simple task as I had trouble getting the lower shaft to slide into the upper shaft. I managed to get it to attach, but then it went too far into the upper shaft, and you may already be guessing that I struggled to pull it outand yes, of course, it came all the way out. My next attempt was successful, and the quick couple system only required a half turn to lock it into placea nice update to Ryobis older attachments, which relied on winding and hand tightening.

The battery was easy to attach, but as I was attaching it, I noticed it felt quite heavy and wondered if it was my imagination. I headed to the scale, and it weighed in at just under 3 pounds, which seemed innocuous until I weighed a few more 4-amp-hour batteries, and they came in at 1 and 1.5 pounds. Please note that the battery is a bit heavy.

I started trimming and tackling weeds growing through the paver cracks and around tree stumps. The power was ample, and while the 0.80 string broke easily against the pavement (not unexpected), the trimmer chewed through the weeds and grass with ease. The deflector did not block a good amount of the grit and grass, but Ive never met a string trimmer that doesnt leave my shins coated in dirt and weeds.

Turning the tool to the edge was awkward but doable, and the straight shaft was well-balanced. I experimented here with the variable speed trigger since I like to move a little slower when edging, and it helped with my aim, as Im a bit of a zig zagger with a string trimmer. The brushless motor had the familiar scratchy noise and was a tad louder than some cordless string trimmers, but the battery still showed a 75% charge after approximately 20 minutes of use.

For my final act, a string change was in order, and my history with spooling string trimmers is not marked as successful. Having used many Ryobi string trimmers over the years, I knew the drill using their loading tool. The great thing about their method is that it works! You slide about 10 inches of string through the center of the bump head without worrying about direction, multiple layers of spooling or remembering how to re-attach the head and wind with the provided tool.

With that successful winding experience, I must caution users based on my previous experiences. The winding tool does not attach or stay with the trimmer, so you need to know where the tool is in your garage or shed. If you cant find it, then you are not going to be able to re-string your trimmer until you buy a replacement or figure out a clever way to wind the head. I now keep mine tied to the handle.

Pros

  • Long-running battery
  • Fast reloading
  • Takes fixed blade heads
  • Interchangeable attachments
  • Large cutting area
  • Long shaft for tall users

Cons

  • Heavy battery
  • Tool required for reloading
  • Not ideal for short users

FAQ

Ryobi Cordless String Trimmer

How do you put the line in a Ryobi string trimmer?

Reloading is relatively easy on Ryobis string trimmers. Unlike most string trimmers, Ryobi uses a proprietary tool to wind the string. To reload, all you need to do is insert the string through the holes in the head and wind. This can be done without removing any parts from the head.

How does the Ryobi trimmer auto-feed?

The Ryobi trimmer uses a bump feed mechanism. To advance the line, you bump the head on the ground while the trimmer is at full speed. If the line does not advance, you can manually press down on the head (while its not in use!) and pull on the line.

How do you remove the string head from a Ryobi trimmer?

This gets a little tricky. You need to pinch the sides of the trimmer and rotate the padlock symbol to the open padlock symbol. My hands arent big enough to do that, so I use some huge channel locks to squeeze and then another pair of channel locks to rotate. Once the symbols are lined up, the head pops right off.

What Other Reviewers Have to Say

Check out what a few other Ryobi string trimmer users have to say about this affordable tool:

Just as good as gas,” remarks customer Frank on The Home Depot website. “My neighbor has this model and I have the gas powered head. After trying his I bought one for myself. I already had most of the attachments. The battery last long enough for me to trim, edge and blow my grass before I have to recharge. It is so quiet I can start earlier in the morning and not wake the neighbors. No gas smell, exhaust smoke or heat.”

Carbon fiber is for real,” five-star reviewer Mike explains. “I have the “original” 40V brushless weed eater, which I have been using it heavily for 2-3 years now for brush clearance. I finally destroyed the head of the string trimmer and decided to give the carbon fiber a shot. The carbon fiber is significantly lighter than the old version and it makes a big difference. In terms of power, it truly does have gas-like power. The battery lasts long enough to trim a yard. If you’re trying to clear a large area, you’ll need a few batteries.

Ryobi String Trimmer vs Other String Trimmers

The Ryobi string trimmer stacks up nicely compared to other cordless string trimmers. The high-capacity battery is a standout, though, as I mentioned earlier, it adds as much as two pounds to the total weight. Another standout is the easy reloading mechanism, with the downside being that a proprietary tool is required to reload the string.

As for power, it was right up there with other cordless and gas string trimmers. The straight shaft was great for extended reaching but not as comfortable as a curved shaft. The noise level was slightly louder than my Ego trimmer, but not by much. The cost of ownership is a little less than that of other cordless string trimmers.

Final Verdict

Based on my testing, the Ryobi 15-inch cordless string trimmer gets a definite vote of yes. The factors influencing my decision lie primarily in the easy winding, high capacity battery and economical price. If you already own other Ryobi 40V tools or interchangeable attachments, this trimmer is a shoo-in for your collection. Another bonus is that parts and add-ons are easily found locally at The Home Depot.

Where to Buy

You canbuy a Ryobi string trimmer with battery and charger for under $200 onAmazon or atThe Home Depot.

Amazon Prime Day is here! For two days only, score deep discounts during one of the biggest sales of the year.See our editors picks.

Many of us love gardening and yard grooming, but few would say they love pulling weeds. Weed management is a nearly constant, labor-intensive activity that typically requires bending, stooping and kneeling to reach the weeds. The end result is usually a sore back, sore knees or both.

As human innovators, we will always find ways to make difficult tasks easier. Knee pads and weeding chairs help. Specialized digging tools are often handheld and aid in getting underneath roots. Stand-up weeders take things to the next level by allowing you to perform weeding from the standing position.

I tried out the Fiskars Deluxe Stand-Up Weeder and put it through a series of tests to access its capabilities. Is it really a good option for sore backs (and pesky weeds) everywhere? Let’s dive in.

What isthe Fiskars Deluxe Stand-Up Weeder?

What Isthe Fiskars Deluxe Stand Up Weeder

The Fiskars Deluxe Stand-Up Weeder merges dreams with reality. It enables root digging and weed pulling from an upright position using a unique system of claws and leverage. This stand-up weeder might change how you feel aboutthe onerous task of weeding.

Fiskars Deluxe Stand-Up WeederProduct Features

Fiskars Deluxe Stand Up WeederProduct Features

The Fiskars stand-up weeder uses four claws to stab weeds and has a 39-inch ergonomic handle shaped like a walking cane. The claws are serrated, and theres a weed ejection mechanism built into the handle. Its best suited for getting at weeds such as thistles and dandelions since those weeds have a clearly identifiable root location.

While the claws are steel, the rest of the weeder is made of sturdy plastic, which keeps it lightweight, around 2.5 pounds, and easy to work with for extended periods of time. The tool has an extra-long foot presser that allows for use with work boots or large feet. Weed releasing is performed by sliding the handle toward the base and returning.

HowWe TestedIt

Howwe Testedit

First, I looked at the packaging and assembly. This tool arrived in a single box and required no assembly. The instructions are printed on the tool,so there was no need to read directions. So, I headed to the yard to get weeding.

I located clumps of crabgrass since it was easy to identify where the roots originated. I centered the four claws over the weed, pressed down on the extremely handy large foot lever and the serrated claws easily sank into the soil. Using the cane-shaped handle, I tilted the tool back against the lever and heard one of the most satisfying sounds one could hearthe sound of roots being pulled completely free. I was so satisfied with my feat that I examined the root system up close before easily sliding the handle to release the weed.

I carried on with the crabgrass patch and was able to clear about two square feet in a couple of minutes. Then, I headed into the yard to ensure the claws could dig through the turf. Again, the claws went right through the tough ground with very little pressure being applied to the foot lever and the weed was easily ejected, thanks to the extractor enclosing all four claws.

After weeding, I checked the claws for damage, and there was none. In fact, the claws’ design indicates that they will stay sharp and capable for a very long time. I washed the dirt off, and the tool still looked brand new.

Pros

  • Non-corrosive components
  • No bending
  • Superior weed release
  • Dandelion destroyer
  • Lightweight

Cons

  • Only works on large-rooted weeds
  • Leaves a divot in the ground
  • Digs only a few inches

FAQ

Fiskars Deluxe Stand Up Weeder

How to use Fiskars stand-up weeder?

  1. Aim the tool at the root by peering through the foot platform.
  2. Press down on the foot platform to dig the claws into the soil around the weed.
  3. Lean the tool toward the foot platform to use the ground as leverage and the weed is extracted.
  4. Slide the ejection mechanism located on the handle to remove the weed from the prongs.
  5. Repeat the steps on the next weed.

Does a stand-up weeder work?

Stand-up weeders do work and can be a great asset to your gardening tool collection. However, they are not going to solve all of your weeding needs. Most stand-up weeders that use prongs excel at pulling thick-rooted plants like dandelions and thistle. There are other types of stand-up weeders that shine at digging or hoeing. Few stand-up weeders can do it all, and despite the benefits of stand-up weeders, youre still going to have to hand-pull some weeds.

How does a stand-up weed puller work?

It depends on the weeder, but most stand-up weeders have four components. The first component is a method for penetrating the soil around the weedclaws, blades, or prongs. The second component is a foot lever for pressing the tool into the soil. The third component is a method for grabbing the weed and pulling itclaws close in on the weed usually by tilting the tool so the lever gets leverage from the ground. The final component is the weed release mechanismusually by the claws opening or a mechanical pushing of the weed.

Are there replaceable parts on the Fiskars stand-up weeder?

The Fiskars Deluxe Stand-Up Weeder does not have replaceable parts. However, it is designed to withstand regular usage and should the need arise, Fiskars offers a lifetime warranty.

What Other Reviewers/Experts Had to Say

A five-star reviewer on Amazon says, Simple to use, worked better than I expected. (Everything is made of flimsy plastic these days) I watered first, and after an hour went outside to try it. I did the entire yard in less than a fourth of the time it took to hand pick weeds.

Very pleased with this product which came ready to roll. It saves countless bending over and day-after-weeding-back-pain-time. It works nicely on most individual weeds and dandelions, pulling the whole root out. Release works well. Perfect for someone with a few beds,” says a verified purchaser on Amazon.

Comparing the Fiskars to Other Stand-Up Weeders

Comparing The Fiskars To Other Stand Up Weeders

When it comes to stand-up weeders, there are lots of comparisons I can draw. The Fiskars weed ejection mechanism really stood out compared to other weeders. The Fiskars tool encloses each claw,as opposed to simply pressing from the center of the claws. I found center pressers often left the weed still attached to the tool and required hand removal.

Another noticeable aspect of the Fiskars weeder is its weight. Its plastic components make it lighter than tools that use all steel construction, and the plastic will not rust.

Of note among stand-up weeders that use a mechanical action (as opposed to gravity) to release the weed is the Fiskars handle-mounted release. I found that pressing a plunger located on the top of some stand-up weeders could be challenging. Sliding the release mechanism on the handle of the Fiskars was a comfortable and natural motion.

Where to Buy the Fiskars Deluxe Stand-Up Weeder

The Fiskars Deluxe Stand-Up Weeder is available for under $60. You can find a deal on Amazon or pick one up at The Home Depot, Walmartor Ace Hardware.

As a leaf blower lover who has always used gas leaf blowers, I was skeptical of a battery-powered blower. I needed raw power that could only be provided by gasolineor so I thought.

What is the Ego Leaf Blower?

Ego leaf blowers are extremely popular for a few reasons. For starters, they are some of the most powerful leaf blowers on the planet. The Ego leaf blower series starts in the 500 CFMs and goes all the way up to 765 CFMs for residential blowers.

As a quick aside, CFMs are a big deal for understanding the power of leaf blowers. CFMs stands for cubic feet per minutesomething that is not totally intuitive. Basically, CFMs measure the volume or amount of air leaving the leaf blower. A high CFM means that the blower is pushing a lot of air. You may see blowers with high CFMs and low MPH (miles per hour). Blowers with this ratio tend to have wide nozzles and be great for landscaping applications where you may need to move large piles of dry leaves simultaneously. If you have high CFMs with a more narrow nozzle, then you will have a blower with a super high MPHa jet stream of raw power. I will return to this later, but the Ego knocks it out of the park in this realm.

Another reason people love Ego leaf blowers is because of the 56V battery series. Whereas many lawn tool products carry multiple battery voltages such as 18V, 36V, 40V, 60V, and 80Vall from the same company, Ego just has the 56V series. I see this as a huge benefit for Ego enjoyers. The battery voltage is much less important, and many folks I speak with on my YouTube channel find this very confusing. For example, I know of some 18V battery series that deliver power more efficiently than 80V battery series and ultimately better performance.

The 56V series from Ego offers the classic 56V battery across all tools and adjusts the amp-hours (controls runtime) to help make the battery lighter for handheld tools.

Ego Leaf Blower Features

When I got my first 56V 765 CFM Ego Leaf Blower, I was giddy with excitement. I’ve long been an Ego fan but had not owned many Ego tools myself before this leaf blower. When I finally got it, unboxing it was a dream. It came in a few separate pieces that made assembly super easy. There’s the motor and handle, the tube that easily snaps on, and the battery that slides right into the back of the blower. It also came with a battery charger and a few extra nozzle tips.

After assembly, I toyed around with the different functions. Of course, the best place to start is with maximum power. Holy cowI was not ready for what happened next. I pressed the trigger all the way down on high power, and my shoulder cocked back, almost like I had just fired a shotgun. The blower has so much power it seems like it can levitate or fly away. I knew I could definitely make use of that type of power. I then toyed around with the cruise control function, which basically just controls how hard the trigger is squeezed down. For longer jobs, it is nice to have the cruise control function where you don’t have to sit and squeeze and exhaust your hand. Nice!

I’ll talk a bit about how I tested this blower in my backyard, but I want to go ahead and give my overall thoughts. The Ego leaf blower is my favorite handheld leaf blowerperiod. I like this blower better than every gas leaf blower I have used and the dozens of other electric/battery-powered options I have tested. It is an absolute beast, has super high-quality construction, and is part of one of the best battery-powered lawn tool lines in the world.

How We Tested the Ego Leaf Blower

Ego Leaf Blower Test

I immediately put this blower to work in my driveway. I walked through my driveway and went full power absolutely demolishing every blade of grass and piece of mulch along my path. When I reached the end of my driveway near my shed, I hit the turbo button to see how the blower would do with some decent-sized rocks. Yepthe Ego leaf blower absolutely knocked those rocks back into their spot on the side of my driveway, taking some small sticks along with it.

For reference, the Ego leaf blower on max power puts out about 650 CFMs. When you hit the turbo button, the blower launches up to 765 CFMs.

I also tested the run time and charge time on this blower. On the highest setting with the turbo engaged, the blower lasted for about 17 minutes. Without turbo, it lasted for 25 minutes. You can expect this blower to last about 45 minutes if you are intermittently blowing leaves around your backyardwhich is about what I get whenever I take it around my lawn in the fall.

FAQ

How long does an Ego blower last?

Depending on how much force is being used by the blower, the battery can last anywhere from 17 to 60 minutes. For typical use, expect about 35-45 minutes of run time in your yard.

How powerful is the Ego blower?

The Ego blower is one of the most powerful cordless electric leaf blowers in production, with a whopping 765 CFMs of powerwell above most handheld gas blowers.

Is the Ego leaf blower quiet?

The Ego leaf blower is much quieter than any gas blower but still does not have a pleasant sound.

What Other Reviewers and Experts Had to Say

The Ego leaf blower has a bit of lore and is widely regarded as the best electric handheld leaf blower. Many other purchasers from Amazon rank the blower extremely highly, with over 80% of reviewers leaving a full five stars. Folks agree that this blower is extremely powerful and comparable to gas blowers but much easier to use. A few downsides that buyers have noted are the battery life and noiseboth of which are huge adjustments when making the switch to a battery-powered leaf blower.

One reviewer on Ego’s website even went as far as to say, “I was skeptical about a cordless blower being capable of demonstrating the performance level of a gas-powered blower; however, the Ego genuinely meets that high standard.” Another mentioned, “[The Ego blower is] more powerful than my old gas power and much quieter. It does get a bit heavy after about 15 min or so, but not bad.”

Ego Leaf Blower vs. Dewalt Leaf Blower

I’ve used the Ego 765 CFM leaf blower and the Dewalt 20V leaf blower.Dewalt has a great reputation in the battery-powered tool world, notably with its hand tools like power drills and sanders. Its 20V leaf blower is popular because the same 20V battery can work with a ton of other toolsnot just in the landscaping world. This gives Dewalt a unique edge over the Ego because you can save money on different classes of tools.

But the battery portability and lower price point are really the only noticeable benefits of the Dewalt leaf blower. The Ego blower is much more powerful, has more features, and is more versatile. The Ego batteries also stick with the consistent 56V series, whereas Dewalt has 20V, 20V MAX and 60V battery lineups in the lawn space alone.

Final Verdict

Ego Leaf Blower Final Verdict

The Ego leaf blower absolutely lives up to the hype. Its combination of extreme power, ease of use, amazing battery series, and affordability make it the best electric blower on planet Earth (IMHO). I was initially suspicious when I switched from my handheld gas leaf blower to the Ego, but I was blown away (literally) when I revved up the brushless motor for the first time.

I’ll be excited to watch cordless leaf blowers evolve over the next few years. I think many issues with battery run time and weight will continue to be fixed as companies innovate to provide better solutions. Ego has a commanding lead in the electric lawn tool space and proves it with this blower.

A quality hedge trimmer is an essential tool in every homeowner’s landscaping arsenal because well-groomed shrubs, bushes, and hedges contribute significantly to curb appeal. Plus, regularly grooming shrubbery eliminates dead, diseased, and overgrown branches, promoting thicker, denser, and more attractive growth and allowing healthier parts of the plant to flourish.

For context, a hedge trimmer is the best tool for shaping and maintaining landscape foliage with frequent trimming. In contrast, a hedge cutterthe hedge trimmer’s cousinis a more powerful cutting tool for tackling thicker branches and overgrown, neglected hedges in dire need of significant shaping.

However, many homeowners tend to supersize their outdoor equipment needs, believing a tool featuring more power and added functions is ultimately better. This mindset isn’t always accurate, says Brandon Barker, a seasoned landscape professional with more than ten years of experience as general manager of Cleveland-based J. Barker Landscaping, a family business serving clients throughout Northeast Ohio for five decades.

Black And Decker Hedge Trimmer

Barker says DIYers should be leery of overkill equipment or purchasing landscape tools that are too powerful or overly complicated. “This rule of thumb goes for many types of power tools, not just hedge trimmers,” he says, explaining that operators should always want to maintain control and full functionality of the tool in their hands.

Barker advises homeowners to consult with their local professional outdoor power equipment dealer if they have questions or concerns about matching the correct hedge trimmer to their landscape needs. Knowledgeable equipment pros can explain the advantages of hedge trimmers’ various blade lengths and cutting capacities and whether a corded, gas- or battery-powered model is the right fit for the landscape challenges at hand.

With many of these points in mind and based on my nearly 20 years of writing about landscape products and topics for the professional contractor market, I would strongly suggest that homeowners seeking a practical off-the-shelf option look closely at Black and Decker’s cordless hedge trimmer. Following my first-hand experience using and testing this trimmer in my yard, I’ve concluded that Black+Decker’s LHT2240 is a testament to great things in small packages. This hedge trimmer is a prime example that being labeled “minimalistic” doesn’t mean it lacks power or capability. Rather, it’s a tool that delivers on its promises.

What is the Black and Decker Hedge Trimmer?

We Tried It

Black+Decker Cordless Hedge Trimmer

High performance from a cordless tool.

Black+Decker’s LHT2240 is a cordless, battery-powered tool for trimming hedges, shrubs, and brushes around an average-sized residential landscape. It utilizes a 40V Li-ion rechargeable battery to power a 22-inch, dual-action cutting blade with a -inch cutting capacity, sufficient for manicuring modestly sized greenery.

Right out of the box, I found the LHT2240 to be a no-frills hedge trimmer lacking some of the features and functions of competitors’ similar models. However, after taking it through its paces throughout a spring afternoon, I found the LHT2240 offers an impressive quality of cut, ease of use, a lightweight design, quiet operation, and a rather attractive price point (around $130). The Li-ion battery alone, if purchased separately, runs around $100.

How I Tested It

Black And Decker Hedge Trimmer Test

After donning work gloves and safety glasses, I tested Black+Decker’s cordless hedge trimmer on various shrubbery and hedge-cutting tasks around my and a neighbor’s residential landscape on a sunny May afternoon. During testing, I paid particular attention to the LHT2240’s cut quality, cutting capacity, ease and comfort of use, overall balance, and how the trimmer’s design impacted my fatigue level. I also noted any deficiencies I observed during its operation.

For example, did it vibrate excessively under strain (I found it did not), was it loud (no more than I expected it would), were the safety features sufficient (yes, but I felt the LHT2240 would benefit from a blade sheath when not in use), and was it durable (it did survive a couple of accidental drops unscathed)? Finally, after concluding my afternoon of field testing, I took a deep dive into consumer feedback to compare and contrast my performance experience with others’ observations and experiences with the LHT2240.

Black+Decker’s LHT2240 hedge trimmer is designed for grab-and-go ease, ideal for homeowners who want to tackle trimming tasks without hassle. After I ran the LHT2240 through its paces, here are the features I believe made me take notice:

Battery-Powered

Black And Decker Hedge Trimmer Battery

Forget tangled chords or managing oil and gas mixes with a small engine. Black+Decker’s LHT2240 battery-powered engine offers the user freedom of movement throughout the landscape. When I engaged the LHT2240 in normal trimming sessions, I found a freshly charged 40V Li-ion battery provided me with around 45 minutes of runtime.

The LHT2240 is part of the Black+Decker 40V Max system, allowing users who own other 40V Max Black+Decker tools to interchange batteries across multiple products. Lastly, being battery-powered enables the LHT2240 to operate at a much lower decibel level than its gas-powered cousins. I found this beneficial, contributing to a more peaceful trimming experience.

Maneuverability

At only 6.8 pounds, the LHT2240 is easy to maneuver, and it was comfortable to hold for extended trimming sessions, giving me greater control and precision while cutting. This is a big plus compared to heavier hedge trimmers that can quickly fatigue shoulders and wrists, especially when engaged in overhead work.

The LHT2240’s wrap-around handle provided me with a safe, secure, and comfortable grip at any trimming angle I engaged, further reducing the strain on my hands and arms. A soft grip further enhanced my comfort level during extended cutting sessions.

Quality of Cut

Black And Decker Hedge Trimmer Blades

The LHT2240’s 22-inch dual-action blades provide a precise, clean cut. In addition, I found the blade tackles branches up to -inches thick, which is enough to accommodate the various Forsythia, Boxwood, Arborvitae, Barberry, and Yews around my typical residential landscape.

Maintenance

Black And Decker Hedge Trimmer Charger

Aside from fully charging the battery, the LHT2240 was essentially ready to go out of the box. After a few hours, I field tested the Black+Decker’s LHT2240; I didn’t have the opportunity or need to perform maintenance on my hedge trimmer. However, Black+Decker designed the LHT2240 for easy upkeep, requiring only seasonal lubrication of the blades’ moving parts, more often if excessive use occurs.

Pros

  • Out-of-the-box usability
  • Lightweight and maneuverable
  • Quiet, low vibration
  • User-friendly and intuitive
  • Good quality of cut
  • Cordless convenience
  • Powerful enough for the average residential landscape
  • Solid battery life (around 45 minutes between charges)
  • Minimal regular maintenance
  • Attractive to the price-conscious consumer

Cons

  • Not suitable for heavy-duty tasks
  • Does not include a rotating handle
  • Battery and charger not always included
  • Did not include a blade cover/sheath

FAQ

Black And Decker Hedge Trimmer FAQ

Can you sharpen Black+Decker hedge trimmers?

While Black+Decker indicates the blades can be sharpened and even replaced, I strongly recommend and encourage the average homeowner to allow an experienced power equipment professional to manage this task.

Do you need to oil the Black and Decker hedge trimmer blades?

Black+Decker designed the LHT2240 for easy upkeep, requiring only seasonal lubrication of the blades’ moving parts, and more often if excessive use occurs to prevent sap from gumming up the blade action. Owners can purchase a silicone-based lubricant spray, which won’t attract dirt and debris as much as a 3-in-1 machine oil lubricant.

What Other Reviewers/Experts Had to Say

Homeowners and DIYers who have used the Black+Decker LHT2240 report many of the same findings I observed during my field testing. Overall, I found consumers offer favorable reviews of the LHT2240. Many users praise the hedge trimmer’s ease of use, lightweight and comfortable design, and quiet operations. There were very few mentions of quality control issues, questionable design, or functional breakdowns.

Numerous users report that the 40V battery charges quickly and provides ample runtime to trim hedges and bushes around an average-sized property on a single charge. However, some users, and I concur, suggest investing in a second battery to accommodate longer operating times. However, purchasing a battery and charger separately could be expensive.

Black+Decker Hedge Trimmer vs. Craftsman Hedge Trimmer

To provide greater depth and perspective, I leveraged my first-hand insights with actual user experiences on trusted websites like Amazon to comprehensively compare the Black+Decker LHT2240 with the Craftsman CMEHTS8022 hedge trimmers.

Both the Black+Decker and the Craftsman are lauded for their user-friendly design. Reviewers consistently praise their lightweight construction and maneuverability, making them comfortable to handle for extended trimming sessions. Additionally, both trimmers seem well-built, sturdy, and resilient to accidental damage. From my first-hand experience, I found both the orange-and-black Black+Decker and red-and-black Craftsman hedge trimmers were constructed with the homeowner/DIYer in mind.

Both seemed well-built and solidly constructed, and their wrap-around handles felt comfortable in my hands. While both felt well-balanced, Black+Decker’s 6.8 pounds (with the battery attached) was slightly heavier than Craftsman’s 5.6 pounds. Although I did find Black+Decker’s trimmer had noticeably lower vibration when engaged with greenery, an observation other consumers also noted. Some users found the Craftsman trimmer on the loud side. However, I did not discern a noticeable difference in decibel levels between the two units.

Both models’ 22-inch dual-action blades made quick work shaping topiary throughout my and my neighbor’s yards. While the Black+Decker’s 40V battery supply provided unrestricted freedom of movement around the landscapes for around 45 minutes, Craftsman’s 3.8 Amp motor offered uninterrupted power bound only by the limitations of an extension cord’s length and an available power outlet.

Craftsman’s integrated limb cutter on the end of its reciprocating blade provided the CMEHTS8022 clear-cutting advantage over the LHT2240, an assessment many online reviewers agreed with. Craftsman’s nifty, saw-toothed tool could tackle small branches up to 1.25 inches thick, which the Black+Decker model would struggle against, leaving some users to conclude was a potential lack of power.

The Craftsman CMEHTS8022 corded hedge trimmer is a solid, affordable cutting tool that offers the DIYer a unique set of advantages for around $100. However, if you’re a homeowner who prioritizes maneuverability and all-around ease of use, then the Black+Decker LHT2240, at a price point of around $140 (less during sales and special promotions), is a clear choice. Remember, consider your needs and preferences, including hedge amount and size, how often you intend to trim, and budget as components of your due diligence before purchasing.

Final Verdict

Black And Decker Hedge Trimmer Battery

For the average homeowner, I found the Black+Decker’s LHT2240 40V MAX Lithium-ion 22-inch cordless hedge trimmer offers a compelling combination of convenience, user-friendliness, cut quality and sufficient power for most landscape tasks. While competitors may offer extra features, I found Black+Decker’s LHT2240 is balanced, well-designed and easy to use for operators at any experience level.

The cordless design eliminates the hassle of extension cords, allowing me freedom of movement and making it convenient to accomplish various trimming tasks around my landscape. Best of all, it’s attainable at an attractive price point. If you’re a do-it-yourself homeowner seeking a reasonable and effective means to maintain your hedges, shrubs and bushes, Black+Decker’s LHT2240 is a strong contender to consider.

8 Ways You Can Help Your Lawn Survive the Heat Wave https://www.familyhandyman.com/article/lawn-care-during-heat-wave/ Wed, 26 Jun 2024 13:39:48 +0000 Help your lawn beat the heat with these pro tips.

The post 8 Ways You Can Help Your Lawn Survive the Heat Wave appeared first on Family Handyman.

]]>
Unusual weather events are quickly becoming the new normal. This includes more extreme heat waves that bring days of intense temperatures. Typical lawn care methods won’t cut it during a heat wave, and need to be adjusted. If you’d like to learn ways to protect your grass from heat, read on for pro-tips from Joe Churchill from Reinders and Matt Cameron from CMS Landscaping.

Raise Mower Blades

If you must mow your lawn during a heat wave, raise the blades first. Longer grass helps shade the soil and prevent it from drying out as quickly. For cool-weather grasses, aim for a blade height of 3 1/2 to 4 inches. For warm-weather grasses, a 3-in. blade height is ideal.

This is especially true for cool weather grasses. “Cutting these grasses short in summer months puts additional stress on the plant,” Cameron says.

Provide Temporary Shade

If you have a section of lawn that bakes in the sun all day, consider setting up some temporary shade. Sun sails and pop-up canopies can protect your grass from heat during periods of intense temperatures.

Limit Foot Traffic

During a heat wave, grass is more vulnerable and less durable. To avoid overstressing it, try to limit the amount of foot traffic on your grass.

Water Deeply

Long, infrequent watering is better for the overall health of your grass, especially during drought and heat. This practice trains roots to grow deeper into the soil, looking for groundwater.

These longer roots come in handy during a drought or heat wave.”When lawns are overwatered, most of the grassroots are in the top one inch of soil or so,” Church says. “That makes your lawn less drought tolerant and unhealthy.”

Church recommends watering your lawn thoroughly in the morning before the temperatures rises. Aim to provide at least 1 inch of water per week during a heat wave.

Avoid Fertilizing

Fertilizer can overwhelm already stressed grassroots and greenery, so skip it during a heat wave. It also encourages new growth that is not hardy enough to withstand a heat wave. Save your fertilizer for cooler temperatures.

Mulch Grass Clippings

If you must mow, Cameron recommends mulching grass clippings. This helps protect grass from heat by retaining moisture and moderating soil temperatures.

Skip Lawn Mowing

If possible, don’t mow your lawn at all right before a heat wave is expected nor during it. Longer grass shades the soil and is more resilient during times of stress.

Add a Layer of Compost

A thin top dressing of compost can also protect your grass from heat. It will aid in moisture retention in the soil below, where grassroots need it most.

Keep the layer 1/8 inch thick and spread it evenly across the lawn. Thicker layers could kill grass, especially in high temperatures. Compost is most helpful when layered on the soil, so avoid any clumps on grass blades if possible.

Frequently Asked Questions

How hot is too hot for grass?

Cool and warm-weather grasses respond differently to hot weather. Cool grasses start to stress when temperatures reach over 85 degrees Fahrenheit. Warm-weather grasses, like Bermuda Grass, can withstand temperatures of 100 degrees Fahrenheit or higher before showing signs of stress.

What is the Difference Between Annuals, Perennials and Biennials https://www.familyhandyman.com/article/what-is-an-annual-plant/ Fri, 21 Jun 2024 15:17:04 +0000 Learn what distinguishes annuals from perennials and biennials.

What Is The Difference Between Annuals Perennials And Biennials

Understanding the differences between annuals, perennials, and biennials is essential knowledge for any aspiring gardener. Each type of plant has a unique life cycle and growth pattern, contributing differently to a garden’s overall aesthetics and maintenance needs.

I largely base my plant choices in my gardens around these three categories. Annuals and biennials are great for a splash of color, while perennials add substance and depth to any garden bed.

Ahead, learn all about annuals, perennials and biennials from two landscaping experts Ricky Lateurrer from Lateurrer Gardens and Landscaping and Joyce Corbett from Class Courtyards.

What Is an Annual Plant?

Marigolds

An annual plant completes a full life cycle in a single growing season. Annuals aim to reseed themselves and do not go dormant and return in the spring. Instead, they germinate, flower and produce seeds within a single season. These seeds then begin a new annual cycle in the spring, continuing to set seed for future plants. “Annuals are my favorite part of my garden,” Corbett says. “I have fun picking out new ones each year.”

Some annuals are perennials grown outside their normal United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Hardiness Zone. “A lot of our annuals in New England are considered perennials in the South,” Corbett says. Because they cannot withstand freezing temperatures, these ‘winter annuals’ will live in colder climates during spring and summer months and then die off in winter. They will not regrow in the spring and require annual replanting.

How long do annual plants live?

A growing season or a year, depending on the plant and climate.

When to plant annuals

“You’ll want to plant annuals in the spring,” Corbett says. When spring actually occurs will depend on the USDA Hardiness Zone in which you live. In Southern California, this could be March, whereas in Northern Maine, it would be April or May.

What are common annual plants?

Begonia, Petunia, Lantana, Impatiens, Sunflowers, Zinnias and Marigolds are popular annual flowering plants.

Does an annual plant come back every year?

No, an annual plant does not come back every year. Annuals will not regrow and need to be reseeded or replanted each year. What they lack in longevity, they make up for with long flowering periods. “I think of annuals as a seasonal decoration that spruces up a garden,” Lateurrer says.

What Is a Perennial Plant?

Peony Plant

A perennial plant lives at least two years, but there are some that can survive for 10 to 15 years or longer once planted. Perennials grow and flower through spring, summer and fall, then go dormant during colder months.

Perennial shrubs may lose their leaves, but woody growth remains. Other perennials lose all green growth during winter, but regrow from dormant root systems.

How long do perennial plants live?

At least two to three years, but some can live for decades. Most perennial flowers live between two and ten years, while shrubs can live longer. “I’ve dug up perennials from gardens that have been there for over 20 years,” Lateurrer says.

When to plant perennials

“[Planting perennials in] either spring or fall is a good time,” Lateurrer says. “You want to avoid the heat of the summer.” If you’re excited to see flowers right away, plant in the spring. If you can wait for flowers, plant in the fall to avoid watering all summer while the plant establishes. “You’ll really save on your water bill by planting in the fall,” Corbett says.

What are common perennial plants?

Perennial flowering plants include Peony, Daylilly, Iris, Seedum, Hosta, Phlox and Lavender. Perennial shrubs include Hydrangea, Azalea, Rhododendron, Butterfly Bush, Forsythia, Lilacs and Roses.

Do perennial plants come back every year?

Yes, perennial plants come back yearly. These hard-working, low-maintenance plants come back every year for at least two years, typically more.

What Is a Biennial Plant?

Evening Primrose Oenothera Rosea Pink Garden Flower

Unlike annuals, biennial plants take two years to complete a full life cycle. Generally, the first season is spent growing roots, leaves and stems, while the second season is devoted to flowering, growing and setting seeds.

How long do biennial plants live?

Biennials live for two years.

When to plant biennial plants

Summer or fall are ideal times to plant biennial plants. As long as they have enough time to establish roots and some growth before a frost, they will return to flower and seed in the spring.

What are common biennial plants?

Black Eyed Susans, Hollyhocks, Foxglove, Sweet William, Honesty, Delphinium and Evening Primrose are popular choices for biennial plants.

Do biennial plants come back?

Yes, biennial plants come back. The same biennial plant will return for one season after going dormant during winter. However, biennials can reseed and continue to grow as new plants. The Black Eyed Susans I planted a few years ago keep reseeding and spreading. The original plant is not alive, but through reseeding, Black Eyed Susans return each year.

FAQs

Annuals, perennials and biennials: Can you plant them in pots?

Yes, you can plant annuals, perennials and biennials in pots. Flowering annuals can, and often are, planted in pots. Perennials and biennials are typically planted in the ground to protect dormant root systems. However, some can be grown successfully in pots. A good rule of thumb is to choose cold-tolerant plants at least two zones colder than the climate you live in. This way the root system will withstand the colder soil temperatures in a pot.

Annuals, perennials, and biennials: Which are easiest to care for?

Perennials are the easiest to care for. Once established, perennials will return year after year. Lateurrer finds perennial favorites Daylilly, Hosta and Iris to be “the most low maintenance and drought tolerant.”

I Tried the All-New Breeo Firewood Rack, Here’s My Honest Opinion https://www.familyhandyman.com/article/breeo-firewood-rack/ Thu, 20 Jun 2024 19:02:31 +0000 Is the Breeo Firewood Rack as good as the company's fire pits? One of our resident firewood experts tried it in their home to find out.

The post I Tried the All-New Breeo Firewood Rack, Here’s My Honest Opinion appeared first on Family Handyman.

]]>
As someone who’s used and reviewed over a dozen fire pits, including the Breeo Smokeless Fire Pit and Solo Stove, and has an indoor fireplace, I like to keep a lot of firewood on hand. Not only that, I also want to make sure the wood is protected on stormy nights.

The Breeo Firewood Rack helps solve both those issues. That’s right, the same people who produce some of the best fire pits are now taking a stab at what is arguably the most important fire pit accessory (next to roasting sticks for s’mores, of course). I’ve been using a standard home improvement store rack for the past few months, so I was curious if this would be any better.

As I’ll explain in my Breeo Firewood Rack review, this is definitely a step up from what you’d find at most stores. It’s also a bit more expensive, but I’ll tell you why it’s worth the cost for some people in the long run.

What is the Breeo Firewood Rack?

The Breeo Firewood Rack holds about a half-face cord of firewood, about four feet in height and length, and can hold up to 15-inch logs (20-inch logs may cause it to tip over). Need more space? The Breeo rack connects to expansion kits; there is no limit on the number of racks you can add. Each rack has its own water-resistant cover, so you can store as much wood as needed.

Although known for its smokeless fire pits, Breeo’s is no stranger to furniture and other fire pit accessories. They’ve produced countless items to turn your pit into a live-fire cooking station, such as a pizza oven, and make chairs and tables for you and your guests to use while sitting around the fire.

Breeo tends to knock it out of the park with these accessories. Their leather fire gloves are some of the most durable and heat-proof mits I’ve used, so I had high hopes for the firewood rack before I even opened it.

One important note: Unlike Breeo’s smokeless fire pits, made in the USA with Amish labor, their firewood rack is made in China. That said, it still has the same high-quality construction that we’ve expected from Breeo.

Breeo Firewood Rack

A firewood rack designed by a premium fire pit brand.

Breeo Firewood Rack Features

Calling the Breeo Firewood Rack “just a rack” would be like calling a McLaren “just a car.” Technically, you’re not wrong, but it’s more than just a steel rack that holds your firewood.

Large Capacity

Each Breeo Firewood Rack can hold up to half a face cord, which is four feet in length and height. A full-face cord is eight feet long and four feet in height.

A half-face cord is enough room for me, but I’m not using my portable fire pits or indoor fireplace every night. I mostly use them on weekends when it’s cool outside, so someone who likes to have a crackling fire more often than that may need more room.

And yes, there are bigger firewood racks out there that are cheaper than Breeo’s. But let’s say there’s a harsh winter ahead, or you’re entertaining a crowd and need more firewood than those racks can handle. What do you do then?

That’s where the Breeo rack’s next feature comes in handy.

Infinitely Expandable

Infinitely expandable Breeo Firewood Rack

Each Breeo Firewood Rack can be connected to an expansion kit, making your rack as large as you need. I have yet to test this feature because I don’t need that much firewood, and as of this writing, no customer reviews touch on this.

I love this feature, and it’s one of the main factors separating the Breeo rack from its competition. Other adjustable firewood racks are out there, but they’re often made with weaker materials than what you find on the Breeo. The “base” size of those other racks is also smaller than Breeo’s, and you’d have to provide a new tarp or water-resistant cover every time you make it larger.

If you have at least a full-face cord of firewood, you can order the Breeo Firewood Rack and an expansion kit or the expansion kit on its own if you need more storage.

Durable Frame

Durable Frame Breeo Firewood Rack

Another reason the Breeo Firewood Rack is worth the price is the durable steel frame. Breeo doesn’t specify what type of steel is used, but I could tell from lifting the box off my front porch that this is heavy-duty. It’s powder-coated, adding an extra protection layer and preventing rusting.

The stainless steel feet also deserve some praise. These give me extra peace of mind that my rack will stay intact and stable. Many other firewood racks use a 2×4 as a base or have four skinny steel legs holding it up. I don’t have any major concerns about these racks’ durability, and many of the ones I’ve used have held up just fine. I just like Breeo’s feet a little more.

You can shake this thing as hard as you want, and it won’t budge because the feet keep it grounded. That doesn’t mean that logs can’t fall off or that this can’t tip overbecause it can if overloaded. However, other reviewers and I feel the Breeo firewood rack is more durable and stable than the others we’ve used.

Water-Resistant Cover

Water resistant cover Breeo Firewood Rack

Each Breeo Firewood Rack includes a water-resistant cover. The canvas cover is treated with a polyurethane solution (PU) that wicks water away and provides up to 1,000 hours of UV protection. It has built-in magnets that keep it stuck to the steel frame so it doesn’t come off during strong wind gusts.

Even a beginner fire pit user can figure out why you’d want to keep your firewood dryit helps it burn quicker and more evenly. Wet firewood also produces much more smoke and is susceptible to mold and rotting. If you need to keep your wood accessible or dry it out, the cover can be rolled up and tied to stay up.

I keep my firewood on a covered porch, so it’s never in the direct path of rain. The cover has done a nice job of protecting all sides, and the magnets do a good job keeping it in place. It’s much nicer than using a standard tarp, which does a good job of keeping rain out but can fly off if not properly weighed down.

One customer reviewer said the cover collected water during a storm that dripped through the canvas and onto the wood (Breeo responded that they’d passed that information to their product team). So, if you plan on putting this rack outdoors, you may want an extra layer of protection during the rainy season.

Easy Assembly

Assembling the Breeo Firewood Rack is pretty simple, and if you’ve ever put together one of these, you might not even need the instruction booklet (though you should always read it once, just to be sure).

Essentially, all you do is connect the horizontal steel tubes to the connectors with the steel feet (brackets) via a couple of screws and then fasten the vertical steel rods with screws. All the tools are included in the box.

All that’s left to do is add your firewood and attach the cover, which takes less than a minute. It took me 10 minutes to open the box and assemble this rack myself.

Lifetime Warranty

Alright, this isn’t a feature of the rack, per se, but it’s nice knowing that your Breeo Firewood Rack has a lifetime warranty. Breeo’s website states that they’ll replace or fix your product free of chargeall you have to do is provide them with photos and an explanation of the issue.

The brand’s strong warranty is another reason I’m okay recommending Breeo products, even if they are a bit more expensive than other brands. Finding a company that makes high-quality products and covers them for life is rare.

How We Tested It

Breeo Firewood Rack Test

I wanted to test the Breeo Firewood Rack for two reasons: I test fire pits and pizza ovens for a living, so I’m always going through firewood, and I just moved into a place with a working indoor fireplace. I’ve had the Breeo Firewood Rack for about a month. In that time, I’ve loaded it with firewood to check its durability and stability. I’ve checked to see if the cover is efficient at keeping the logs dry and simulated “shake tests” to ensure it won’t fall over if bumped into.

It passed all tests with flying colors and now has a space on my balcony to store all my firewood (I’m partial to the Cutting Edge firewood subscription).

Pros

  • One rack holds half a face cord
  • Comes with a water-resistant cover that protects all the logs
  • Can add as many expansion kits as you want
  • Holds logs up to 15 inches long
  • Easy to put together
  • Durable
  • Lifetime warranty
  • Lightweight (when empty)

Cons

  • Expensive
  • Not made in the USA

FAQ

Breeo Firewood Rack FAQ

Can you leave the Breeo Firewood Rack out in the rain?

The Breeo Firewood Rack comes with a water-resistant cover, meaning you could hypothetically leave it out in the rain, but that doesn’t mean you should. One customer reviewer said water leaked through the cover after a storm, making their logs wet.

How big is the Breeo Firewood Rack?

The Breeo Firewood Rack is 52-1/2 inches long and 15 inches high. When empty, it weighs 40 pounds and can be connected to expansion kits of the same size.

What Others Had to Say

As of this writing, the Breeo Firewood Rack has only been out for about a month, so there are few customer reviews. It has an average rating of 4.6 stars on its website, with all but one of the eight reviews being five-star ratings.

“Like all other Breeo products, the firewood rack is well designed and constructed,” writes customer Jim C. “Replaced another couple of inferior racks. Solid and keeps wood dry but easily accessible.”

The lone negative review was a two-star rating, and the reviewer took points off because of the cover rather than the rack itself. “It rained yesterday for most of the day and the top of the cover literally took on water and slowly dripped all of the wood,” customer Brad writes. “The top seems to be two pieces of fabric and if it gets soaked in a storm it retains the water. It doesn’t seem like that should happen.”

The Breeo team passed this concern to their product team and offered Brad a new cover or credit for his troubles.

Breeo Firewood Rack vs. Solo Stove Station

Breeo vs. Solo is a widespread debate in the fire pit community. However, comparing the Breeo Firewood Rack to the Solo Stove Station feels like comparing apples to oranges. Not only that, I think there’s a small subsection of people who could use both.

The Breeo Firewood Rack is just a rack. It’s a nice one, but it doesn’t do much else besides hold and protect your logs.

The Solo Stove Station, on the other hand, can hold your firewood, Solo Stove and other Solo accessories. Like the Breeo Firewood Rack, the Solo Station has a full-length weatherproof cover to keep out rainwater and excessive sunlight. Breeo has the X-Series table, which can hold firewood and other accessories but not your fire pit.

It’s unclear how much firewood the Solo Stove Station can hold. It has a 250-pound weight capacity, but that includes the weight of your Solo Stove (if you decide to store it there). Solo doesn’t sell a dedicated firewood rack, which is why I think some people should get both accessories.

Think about it: You use the Solo Stove Station to store your Solo Bonfire or Solo Stove Mesa, have a few logs in the other compartment, and have more ready to go in your Breeo Firewood Rack. On the other hand, people with a Breeo or other type of fire pit should just go for the firewood rack since it’s unlikely the Solo Station can hold their pit, though smaller ones like the Blue Sky Ridge Fire Pit should have no issue.

As someone with two Breeo fire pits (I know I have a problem), I would also like to see Breeo make something like the Solo Stove Station for easy storage.

Final Verdict

Do I think everyone needs to get rid of their firewood rack in favor of the Breeo Firewood Rack? No, but if you’re in the market for one, I think it provides some of the best bang for your buck due to its highly durable frame, included weatherproof cover, large capacity and its ability to connect to other expansion racks endlessly.

Are you partially paying for the brand name? A little (sorry, Breeo, we call it as we see it). Even with the slight upcharge, few other firewood racks are as long-lasting and come with a lifetime warranty, not to mention excellent customer service.

When it comes to property maintenance, having the right tools and machinery can turn a multi-weekend project into an afternoon task. So, having a single tool that can plow, tow, haul, dump and even help take the garbage bins out is a major deal. The newest Polaris Rangerthe 2025 XP 1000 NorthStaris just that tool.

Those who are familiar with utility-task vehicles (UTV) know that Polaris is a trusted name in the industry. The company, which began making snowmobiles in the 1950s, designs and manufactures everything from motorcycles and pontoon boats to ATVs and side-by-side utility-task vehicles.

Their 2025 Ranger lineup includes customer-driven improvements like increased durability, better transmission and more included features like a 7-inch display console and built-in sound system from JBL (which is one of our favorite home speaker companies).

I got to try out the premium and ultimate versions of the 2025 Polaris NorthStar myself to get a feel for the performance and functionality of these home improvement powerhouses.

What is the Polaris Ranger XP 1000 NorthStar?

Ranger is a brand of side-by-side off-road vehicles that look like a pick-up truck, but are closer to the size of a golf cart. They have power steering, gas and brake pedals, gear shift, and bench seating in the cab, a reinforced front bumper and grille, and a large truck bed that can be tilted up with a simple latch system.

The Ranger XP 1000 NorthStar is equipped with a closed cab thats decked out with heating and air conditioning, a plethora of cup holders and storage, a console with GPS and trail maps, and built-in speakers that can connect to your phone. Paired with the 82-horsepower engine, 2,500 pound towing capacity and 1,000 pound carrying capacity, the Polaris NorthStar can be used to assist with lawn maintenance on large residential properties, daily chores on farms and ranches, and even getting docks and boats in and out of the water.

The powerful and thoughtful design of this revamped Ranger is something to behold. I found it to not only have the versatility and strength to tackle just about any outdoor chore, but itll also keep you comfortable while you do it.

Polaris Ranger XP 1000 NorthStar

Striking the perfect balance between comfort and performance, the 2025 Ranger XP 1000 NorthStar from Polaris is the ultimate maintenance tool for your property.

Polaris Ranger XP 1000 NorthStar Product Features

Closed Cab

One of the best aspects of this UTV is the completely enclosed cab. Riding around in the NorthStar on a Texas ranch meant a lot, and I mean a lot, of kicked-up dirt, dust, mud and water, which would have been pretty miserable without the closed cab and filtered air system.

In addition to clean air, you can also adjust the Polaris NorthStars temperature with heating and air conditioning. The former was a lifesaver in the Texas heat and the latter will make early morning snow removal a much more enjoyable experience. If you want to appreciate some good weather or coordinate with someone outside the vehicle, you can always roll down the windows. The ultimate NorthStar has power windows while the premium has crank windows. For even more flexibility, the ultimate NorthStar has a tip-out windshield thatll make you feel like youre in an open cab.

I also really appreciate the thoughtfulness of the cabs design. The bench seats and rear-hinged doors allow for easy in and out, which is really handy when working on a project. Plus, the LED headlights switch is conveniently located to the left of the steering wheel so you can quickly illuminate what youre working on, even when youre out of the UTV.

Included Tech

Fhma24 Polaris Ranger Xp 1000 Northstar Caroline Stanko Ssedit 03

The ultimate edition of the Ranger XP 1000 NorthStar comes standard with some pretty cool electronics, the first being a 7-inch touchscreen display with Ride Command. This free program is an integrated GPS system where you can load existing trails, map new trails, view and communicate with other Polaris vehicles or snowmobiles, utilize a backup camera and, of course, see drive information like the speed, gas level and direction. To take things to the next level, you can add a Ride Command+ subscription that provides vehicle maintenance and diagnostic information so your ride stays in tip-top shape.

Also included with the ultimate edition is an all-new sound system backed up by JBL speakers. I can attest that these speakers sound great and are loud. Youll have no trouble hearing the radio or streaming music while riding or working outside the UTV. You can connect your phone via Bluetooth to sync with Ride Command to listen to music and get texts and calls, or plug in your phone with the USB port when youre low on battery.

Power and Durability

A big selling point for the 2025 Polaris Ranger line is the upgraded front end. The redesigned front bumper and grille are larger and more durable than previous iterations, for improved performance and appearance. Attached to the front end is a heavy-duty winch with a synthetic rope and auto-stop feature that will make light work of downed trees, loading items onto a trailer or pulling yourself or another vehicle out of a stuck spot.

With an 82-horsepower engine and new Gen 2 transmission, the Polaris Ranger XP 1000s shift easily between gears and can reach up to 60 miles per hour. When paired with the units three throttle control modes (performance, standard, work) you can expect to power over rough terrain and steep slopes, and have more acceleration control.

The NorthStar ultimate and premium are now equipped with 29-inch wheels and four-wheel, two-wheel and one-wheel drive, the latter of which can be used to preserve wet grass or other fragile ground from being torn up while you work. The larger wheels and 14-inch ground clearance mean you can stay dry when driving through flooded fields or low waterways.

Versatility and Add-Ons

There are almost endless uses for the Polaris Ranger NorthStar. The large cargo box can hold up to a thousand pounds and has a simple lever latch that allows you to tip the box up. This is incredibly helpful when moving heavy rocks, transporting and laying mulch, or planting trees and other large plants around your property.

The cargo box also has corrugated sides and bed to securely hold storage containers and tool boxes or partition the bed into separate sections. Additionally, hitch a trailer to the back and use the 2,500 pound towing capacity to move heavy equipment, lawn tools, decking or even a light boat.

Like there are many ways to upgrade a utility trailer, there are a ton of add-ons and accessories available for the Ranger NorthStar line. From storage racks and bed extenders to hydraulic lifts, generators and covers, Polaris has all the gear you can imagine on their website and Amazon. Two of my favorite add-ons are the snow plow and trash can hauler which turn cumbersome chores into a fun (and productive!) ride. If youre not quite sure which accessories would work best for you, Polaris offers six packages that filter down common tools and add-ons for large properties, farm work, hunting, trail riding and winter prep.

How We Tested It

Fhma24 Polaris Ranger Xp 1000 Northstar Caroline Stanko Ssedit 01

I got the chance to test out the Ranger XP 1000 NorthStar premium and ultimate vehicles at a ranch in Texas. I drove the premium NorthStar (the unit without a dash display and speakers) for about five hours and the ultimate (with those features) for about an hour and a half, mostly off-road. This included rocky ground, dusty trails, low waterways and up and down steep slopes. Heres what I thought.

Ride Performance

Starting to ride this side-by-side couldnt have been easier. After hopping into the UTV, I just turned the key, pushed the gear shift and started driving. I started off on a dusty dirt road, and can this thing move. Though the top speed is 60 miles per hour, even going half that made me feel like I was flying. This would be incredibly convenient for those with especially large properties to move around in a flash.

Once I switched over to off-trail riding, the strength of the Ranger NorthStar really shined. Despite being met with rocky earth that verged on boulders, the vehicle in four-wheel drive powered through without missing a beat. I was actually pretty impressed with how smooth the ride was, given the uneven terrain. Dont get me wrong, there were certainly bumps, but I never felt jolted or overly jostled, likely because of the larger tires and dual a-arm suspension.

When I was met with steep up or downward slopes, I tried out the performance and work throttles. When engaged, these modes definitely gave the UTV more power and control when moving up and down steep hills. Rather than sliding down or back a big decline/incline, the Ranger gripped the road and moved evenly, even when moving slowly.

Speaking of grip, I also drove the side-by-side through a few flooded spots on the trail as well as a flooded road. Though the water was about a foot deep, the vehicle had no problem driving through the water. It should be noted that even with the large tires, high clearance and sealed suspension, if you drive through water higher than the clearance, you will get a bit of moisture in the floor of the cab. Thats fairly high, though, and I didnt experience any water issues during my drive.

Something that I particularly enjoyed about riding these Rangers was the improved powered steering. The vehicle was incredibly easy to navigate, and even surprisingly nimble with a 160-inch turning radius. I could definitely see these side-by-sides being incredibly useful in cleaning up and maintaining a large home property.

Comfort

Fhma24 Polaris Ranger Xp 1000 Northstar Caroline Stanko Ssedit 04

When it comes to creature comforts, it doesnt get much better than the Ranger XP 1000 NorthStar. When I first saw the bench seats and small, glass-mounted headrests, I was a bit nervous about how my body would feel after a few hours of driving. My fears were unfounded though, and I was pleasantly surprised at how comfortable I was. If youre planning on riding around all day, every day, I could see you wanting to add more lumbar support or an extra seat cushion (our favorite seat cushion is in this list of the best car accessories), but more casual users will be perfectly content with the bench alone. The steering wheel can be tilted front and back, so it can be adjusted for drivers of different heights and sizes.

One of the best parts of this vehicle is the closed cab and climate control. As I mentioned, I drove the side-by-side off-road in Texas, which meant very hot and dusty rides. The HVAC system kept about 99% of the debris out (I had just a touch of dirt around my sunglass line and in my nostrils after several hours of driving). The air conditioning was an actual lifesaver. Even though it was only mid-April, it was extremely hot and sunny out and the air conditioning in the cab worked quickly and consistently to keep me cool. I can only imagine how great the heating element would be in the winter months, especially if you have to do some early morning plowing.

For the time I was able to drive the ultimate model, I made full use of the JBL speaker system and display screen. Using Bluetooth, my iPhone connected with little effort and I cranked the tunes. My music could be easily heard over the rumble of the engine and clearly heard outside the cab when the doors were open. When it comes to the touchscreen display, my favorite part was seeing the other Rangers in my group driving the trail through Ride Command. If you have multiple Polaris vehicles on a farm or together for an off-roading trip, making sure everyone is accounted for is a huge safety plus.

For those who are only interested in owning one Ranger NorthStar, I understand going with the paired-down premium version, without the display and sound system. This was the model I drove the most and it was great. Its certainly more utilitarian and cheaper (the premium Ranger NorthStar is five grand less than the ultimate) but I will say I did miss the additional tech of the ultimate after switching back to the premium. Theres just something about riding around with the music blasting!

Usability

Fhma24 Polaris Ranger Xp 1000 Northstar Caroline Stanko Ssedit 05

The 2025 line has all the functionality and versatility of the Rangers previous iterations, plus a few bells and whistles. On the front of the side-by-side is a new front bumper and grille that will protect the front of the cab (and, well, you) from bumps and hits while driving as well as when pulling something on the winch. The winch itself is built into the UTV with a synthetic rope to resist fraying and a handy auto-stop thatll keep the end of the rope from being rolled into the winch. Plus, the winch is remote-controlled, so you can pull or release items from a safe distance.

At the back of the Ranger, the bed can be titled up with a lever near the middle of the vehicle. I was surprised how easily the bed lifted once unlatched, thanks to the added hydraulics. This means moving and dumping rocks, dirt, feed or sand are much more manageable tasks than if you had a wheelbarrow alone. Also, if you add a winch to the top of the cab, you can pull large logs or game hands-free into the bed, which will totally save your back. Once tiled up, you can get a good look at the upgraded ProStar engine and can perform routine maintenance as needed.

As I mentioned before, the bed of the truck has grooves along the bottom and up the sides to more securely hold storage bins, tool boxes and coolers. You can also partition the bed with a couple of boards as dividers. Additionally, there are round and rectangular holes all along the top of the walls where you can install storage or tool racks, mounts, a bed extender or flag pole, the options are extensive. An example of how thoughtful the design of this side-by-side is the inclusion of four cupholder spots on the tailgate so you can keep your beverage close as you work outside the vehicle.

Pros

  • Closed cab with effective air filtration and climate control
  • Powerful engine with lots of control
  • Smoother ride
  • JBL sound system standard on ultimate
  • Very versatile
  • Display includes GPS, trails and tracking other Polaris products

Cons

  • Expensive
  • Might be overkill if you have a smaller property, or only casually hunt or trail ride
  • Add-ons can be pricey, especially when purchasing multiple

FAQ

What’s the difference between a Polaris Ranger 1000 and a Polaris Ranger 1000 XP?

According to the Polaris website, the Ranger 1000 and Ranger 1000 XP are very similar, but the 1000 XP has a newer engine with more horsepower (82 hp vs. 61 hp) as well as better seats, suspension and ground clearance.

How fast does a Polaris Ranger XP 1000 go?

The Polaris Ranger XP 1000 has a top speed of 60 mph, so you can zip around a farm or large property (or between multiple properties) in a snap.

How much does a Polaris Ranger Northstar weigh?

The Polaris NorthStar is an estimated 1913 pounds with a payload capacity of 1275 pounds.

Are Polaris Rangers reliable?

Yes, Rangers are reliable, Polaris is one of the top brands in the UTV industry. In addition to the durability upgrades for the 2025 line, Polaris also offers 1-year limited and 1-year factory warranty for these vehicles. You can also purchase additional or extended coverage with the Polaris Protection Plan which covers mechanical and electric parts, repairs, trip protection and vehicle pickup.

Can-Am vs Polaris

The most similar product on the market to the Polaris NorthStar ultimate is the Defender Limited from Cam-Am. These UTVs are closed cabs that seat 3 with same horsepower, ground clearance, box capacity, towing capacity and wheel drive options, and both have a dump bed, rear camera, tilt windshield with wipers, LED headlights and lots of add-on options. The Defender and Ranger are also similar in overall size. The base Cam-Am Defender costs $29,899 and the base Polaris NorthStar ultimate is $32,999 (the premium version comes in at $27,999).

While both UTVs have a display screen, the Polaris NorthStars is much more sophisticated. For one, its a large touchscreen that can display GPS coordinates and directions, driving information and control the music. The Defenders display, on the other hand, is a rectangle above the steering wheel that only displays driving information. Similarly, the Defender’s HVAC control is a single knob for the temperature and fan levels, whereas the NorthStar has separate knobs and a defrost switch.

The Defender does not come with a sound system standard, like the Ranger NorthStar ultimate does, but one can be added when building your vehicle for an additional $930-1,120.

If the upgraded tech isnt enough to sway you to the Polaris NorthStar, Id recommend testing each of these vehicles out for yourself at a local dealership. They are so close in specs and price, your personal ride experience and needs are even more important.

Final Verdict

If you have a large property or farm, multiple properties, trail ride, hunt or just work on a ton of outdoor chores, the Polaris 100 XP NorthStar ultimate or premium are definitely worth the high price tag. The vehicles are so versatile, especially with add-ons, and the closed cab and HVAC allow you to work all year round. Paired with the stellar tech and sound system of the ultimate edition, this is a top-tier tool.

Where to Buy the Polaris Ranger NorthStar

You can purchase the 2025 Polaris Ranger NorthStar ultimate and premium at a local dealership. You can also customize your UTV on the Polaris website and then be connected to dealer close to you to fulfill your order. RANGER add-ons, replacements, accessories and merch can be purchased on the Polaris store or Amazon storefront.

Traditional in-ground pools remain in demand among homeowners with deep pockets and flexibility to wait months for permits and construction. The Bestway Steel Pro Max Round Above Ground Pool Set is just as fun but significantly more affordable, durable and easier to assemble. Instead of taking months to build, the Bestway pool can be installed, filled and ready to enjoy in hours.

We have access to community pools and the beach, but we found ourselves still wanting a pool. Swimming at any hour just a few steps from my home without the crowds or entrance fees spoke to me.

Unlike traditional pools and in-ground hot tubs, installing an above-ground pool is way more relaxed. And that’s precisely what you should be: Way more relaxed. Pop on a tutorial, stake out a flat area in your backyard and order a few pool accessories. It’s pool time.

Here’s my first-hand experience and whether or not I think you should buy the Bestway above-ground pool, too.

What is the Bestway Above-Ground Pool?

Bestway Above Ground Pool

The Bestway Steel Pro Max Pool Set has a cartridge filter, pump and ground fault circuit interrupter, a safety feature that will shut off the pump if water gets into the electric current. This model also includes a flow control drain valve for easy draining. You’ll need to purchase a ladder and solar cover separately. (A solar cover helps heat your pool using solar energy, keeping it ready to use when you want it. It also helps cut energy costs and reduces evaporation.)

Setup is easy thanks to the company’s tool-free FrameLink system. The manufacturer recommends assembling the pool with two to three people, so you’ll want to call some friends over to assist.

How I Tested It

Bestway Above Ground Pool

As a first-time pool owner, I tested the Bestway Steel Pro Max over several weeks, focusing on assembly and durability. I reached out to pool experts and joined Facebook groups focused on above-ground pools, where people could ask questions about setup and discuss water quality.

Testing the Bestway pool began with assembly. Our yard has a flat, mulched area that was the perfect spot for an above-ground pool. It’s close to a power source for the pump and filter. I started by leveling the ground with a laser level, then added a 4-inch layer of masonry sand. Mortar (or masonry sand) is best because it’s screened well to prevent pebbles from poking holes in the liner. Play sand is too fine, and construction sand has small pebbles. The sand base will compress with the weight of the water, providing a solid foundation that can support the pool’s weight. It also acts as a barrier between the pool and the ground, protecting the liner from rocks, roots and other sharp objects.

Next, I laid out the liner and organized the pool frame’s supports and corners to prevent mix-ups during assembly. Ground prep and assembling the frame and liner took about three hours with a three-person crew, starting with unboxing, removing the packaging, organizing parts, ground leveling and assembly. I placed 4-inch-thick pavers under each leg, making sure the pavers were level to the ground.

Bestway Above Ground Pool

A level base with less than a 2-inch difference is crucial to preventing collapse or stressing the pool walls. According to pool expert Randy Huckstadt, “Unlevel pool supports are not meant to have the additional weight put on them by an unlevel above-ground pool and can bend and collapse. Once you have a good base, you can set up the support system, install the liner and begin filling.”

Bestway Above Ground Pool

After assembling the frame and liner, I filled the pool with one to two inches of water, then gently smoothed any wrinkles on the liner, starting from the center to the wall and working clockwise to the outside. While the pool filled with water, I connected the filter and pump to the pool.

It took about six hours to fill the pool using a garden hose. I only filled the pool during the daytime, as filling the pool at night is not recommended. Cold air can shrink the liner, while the water makes the liner stretch.

Pro tip: You can save money filling your pool by calling your water company and letting them know you’re doing so. They will eliminate the sewage charge from the extra water use, which is often the most expensive part of the water bill. I estimate this will save me about $100 on my water bill.

The cartridge filter that came with the pool didn’t seem to keep up and needed to be cleaned daily. You can tell when the filter plugs up because the return flow will drop almost nothing. I plan to update the filter to a sand filter. John Uhle, pool expert and founding partner at Discount Salt Pool, explains how to select the appropriate filter for your pool, “The filter should be able to process the entire pool volume every five hours and have a reservoir large enough to trap and hold dirt effectively.”

“If you want to enhance the filtration quality further, consider using filter balls, which provide superior filtration and hold onto small dirt particles more effectively. Achieving the best possible filtration often requires sand filters with high pump capacities relative to their tank size, which benefit greatly from using filter balls,” Uhle explains.

Pros

  • Durable steel frame
  • Fast DIY tool-free setup
  • Extremely affordable
  • Puncture-resistant liner
  • Cartridge filter and pump included
  • Takes up little storage space
  • Great for kids and pets

Cons

  • Doesn’t come with a pool ladder or accessories
  • Plastic pump included is a bit weak

FAQ

Bestway Above Ground Pool

Can a Bestway pool stay up all year?

Pools with galvanized steel walls can withstand winter conditions without damage. However, the Bestway has a steel frame and flexible lining, which can’t withstand freezing temperatures without damage. Soft-sided pools generally don’t fare well through winter and must be drained and disassembled.

According to Uhle, “When temperatures fall to 50 degrees Fahrenheit or lower, you should dismantle your soft-sided above-ground pool to prevent damage. Snow, ice, frost and cold temperatures can damage any soft-sided pool, regardless of the brand. Leaving these pools up during the winter can lead to mold, brittleness, significant liner tears and warping of the frame, which will ruin the pool and void the manufacturer’s warranty.”

If you live in a warm climate and regularly clean and maintain your Bestway pool, you can leave it up all year round. However, Rafi Friedman, CEO at Coastal Luxury Outdoors, says it’s best to take it down if you aren’t using it for extended periods, especially if you live where it freezes regularly.

How often should you change the water in a Bestway pool?

If the water chemistry is correct and the pump and filter do their job, the water you fill your pool with will last for the entire swimming season.

“A small amount of water may evaporate during hot summers or splash out during active swimming, so you may have to add a small amount of water during the season. However, if you have no structural and equipment integrity issues, no leaks and use the pool cover when not in use, this natural water loss will be minimized,” explains Uhle.

There are situations when it’s time to change the pool water. “Chronic issues with algae, water clarity or keeping the water balanced are good indicators that it may be time to drain the pool,” explains Alicia Toedter, education leader with Leslie’s Pools, a leading pool care retailer in the U.S.

Does a Bestway pool need chlorine?

Every pool needs a way to keep the water clean and sanitary. The most popular sanitizer for outdoor pools is chlorine, effective against algae, bacteria and other harmful organisms.

“A daily low-level dose of chlorine and a weekly shock treatment will help you maintain a Free Available Chlorine level between 14 parts per million (ppm), essential to prevent waterborne illnesses and keep the pool water clean and clear,” says Toedter. “Chlorine can be added in various forms, such as liquid chlorine, chlorine tablets or granular chlorine, depending on your preference and pool type. Many above-ground pool owners prefer using chlorine tablets in a floating chlorinator for daily sanitization and granular shock once a week.”

Looking for alternative sanitizers? Consider mineral, ozone or UV systems, which can reduce chlorine usage. “Chlorine is still required as a primary sanitizer. Other sanitizers for those looking to avoid chlorine include bromine and biguanide,” says Toedter. “Saltwater pools are another alternative, although they’re still technically ‘chlorine’ poolsthey use electrolysis to convert salt into chlorine.”

How often should you change the water in a Bestway pool?

With proper maintenance, including regular cleaning, filtration, chemical balancing and sanitization, the same water can be used for several seasons.

“We generally recommend partially draining and refilling the pool every 23 years to maintain good water quality and keep the Total Dissolved Solids (TDS) level within the recommended range,” says Toedter. “Issues with high Calcium Hardness or Cyanuric Acid levels may also warrant draining to maintain proper balance. Chronic issues with algae, water clarity or keeping the water balanced are good indicators that it may be time to drain the pool.”

“Just keep in mind that draining can damage a vinyl liner pool. To avoid this, you can drain and refill one foot of water at a time to keep the pool filled, and the liner stretched and covered while you dilute the existing water with fresh replacement water,” Toedter adds. “But you should only completely drain a vinyl liner pool if you intend to replace the liner or the water is unsalvageable. Otherwise, the liner can pucker, wrinkle and crack while there’s no water in the pool may even tear when you try to add water back in.”

If the water chemistry is correct and a pump and filter do their job, the water you fill your pool with will last for the entire swimming season. However, a small amount of water may evaporate during hot summers or splash out during active swimming, so you may have to add a small amount of water during the season. However, if you have no structural and equipment integrity issues, no leaks and use the pool cover when not in use, this natural water loss will be minimized.

How does Bestway compare to Intex?

Compared to a soft-sided Intex pool, the Bestway has a protective and strong liner. Intex uses a three-ply PVC type of wall, while Bestway has a three-layer wall made of polyester sandwiched between two PVC layers.

Both pool brands typically do not require any special tools for assembly. They are easily set up and run, but the Intex pools have well-laid instructions, unlike Bestway, which lacks straightforward guidelines. I ended up watching a couple of tutorials to troubleshoot the assembly of the Bestway Steel Pro Max.

The pump included with an Intex pool is often not strong enough, and the quality of the pump with the Bestway Steel Pro Max can also be disappointing at times. Both pools are easy to set up, robust and a great value.

What Others Have to Say

Reviewers hail the Bestway as the best soft-sided above-ground pool under $500. Between positive remarks about the pool’s durability, ease of installation and water depth, it’s easy to see why it amassed 2,400 positive ratings on Amazon.

Bernice Begil, a five-star reviewer, calls this pool the best buy of the summer. “The pool was an easy set up, sturdy and great quality. The size is true and the pool liner is thick. Best buy of the summer!”

“Easy setup. Product was as advertised. Doesn’t come with a ladder but can easily find those. Don’t be a fool, get this pool,” writes Amazon reviewer Kristina.

Amazon reviewer Becky purchased the Bestway pool for her sister’s children and has not been disappointed. “The site setup and prep was the most time consuming but putting the pool up and getting it ready to use is very simple and easy! The hours of use by my niece and nephews and the endless laughter and smiles, makes this pool absolutely worthwhile!”

Final Verdict

Bestway Above Ground Pool

If you’re in the market for an affordable. durable above-ground pool, look no further. The Bestway Steel Pro Max offers easy, no-tool installation and superb durability (it stood up to my 35-lb, water-loving dog, my twins and all their pool accessories). The water depth is impressive for a pool under $500. I recommend the Bestway pool for its sturdiness, overall appearance and price point (under $300). However, I recommend upgrading the cartridge filter to a more robust sand filter.

I have tested and extensively used dozens of backpack leaf blowers and have never been more impressed than with the versatility of the Husqvarna 150BT Backpack Leaf Blower. I used to own a landscaping company, and having a reliable backpack blower is a must year-round, not just during autumn. Landscapers can only make money by doing a good job making lawns pristine while moving as quickly as possible. A nice mow, blow, and go is the treasured lingo of many landscapers.

Without a backpack blower, you will leave grass clippings all over the place or get stuck sweeping or using a handheld blowerboth of which will make your customers unhappy. Drive around town this weekend and tell me what you see hanging off the back of landscaping trucks. You are guaranteed to see at least two backpack blowers on each trailer. Without them, landscapers couldn’t move the pace required to operate a profitable business.

Backpack blowers get a lot of flack from folks who can’t handle the noise. Yesbackpack blowers are loud and quite unpleasant. Those who operate backpack blowers are strongly recommended to wear ear protection. However, the tradeoff for momentary unpleasantness is majorly outweighed by the speed at which the job is done.

For example, two neighbors blow grass trimmings after mowing their lawns. One has a weaker, handheld cordless leaf blower that makes a sharp, high-pitched whirring noise that isn’t all that loud. The other is a backpack blower with a thunderous roar. The weaker blower lasts about 15 minutes, whereas the backpack blower finishes the job in three. I’ll take the louder noise for a shorter period, but that’s just me.

What is the Husqvarna Backpack Blower?

Husqvarna Backpack Blower Ssedit A

The Husqvarna 150BT is a gas-powered backpack leaf blower with the features and affordability of a residential blower but with the power of the best commercial leaf blowers on the market. The 150BT is a staple in landscaping because of its affordability and reliability. Let’s take a look at some of the specifications.

Starting with the engine make-up, this blower is a 2-cycle, 51-cc or 2.16 HP X-Torq engine that pushes out 765 CFMs of air. For those looking for a reference point, the strongest and most expensive electric blower I’ve ever used is about 765 CFMs of air. CFM stands for cubic feet per minute and measures the volume of air that is leaving the blower. High CFM generally means more force, whereas MPH (miles per hour) refers specifically to the power of the stream. High CFMs and high MPH are the best indicators of raw power.

Fortunately, the Husqvarna 150BT backpack blower has both, with upwards of 270 MPH of air speed coming out of the blower nozzle. At 270 MPH, wet leaves and grass do not stand a chance against this blower. The combination of high CFMs and high MPH makes this blower a lethal weapon for debris of all types.

An ultra-powerful backpack leaf blower, perfect for homeowners

Husqvarna Backpack Blower Features

Many of the features on the Husqvarna 150BT were designed to make both residential and commercial use easy. For example, the X-Torq engine on this blower can reduce emissions drastically, which is excellent for commercial landscapers who share air with the fumes all day. It also has a more fuel-efficient engine that can increase run-time by nearly 20%. The longer run-time helps landscapers and residential users use less fuel and move from job to job quickly while taking fewer costly breaks.

The Husqvarna 150BT also comes with a super comfortable design. Padded straps, a hip belt and a load management system that shifts the weight around on you using suspension are all perks. On the handle, the 150BT has a cruise control system that lets you “set it and forget it” when you have settled on the right speed for the job. The features designed around comfort are all about making the job more enjoyable when compared to other blowers.

Lastly, at just under 22 pounds, the Husqvarna 150BT backpack blower is super lightweight, making the job less taxing. The last thing you want is a massive tortoise shell of a leaf blower weighing you down for eight plus hours daily. Using a backpack leaf blower as a landscaper is a bit like hiking. Hikers walk miles per day with a backpack full of equipment. Landscapers also walk many miles daily with a backpack blower and cannot afford unnecessary weight additions on the tool itself.

How We Tested It

Husqvarna Backpack Blower Ssedit

The Husqvarna 150BT got the classic whole-lawn testing gauntlet from me. Over one month, I used this backpack blower in every situation I could think of on my lawn. I started with the timeless mow, blow and go challenge, approaching my lawn like a typical landscaper would coming to do their weekly mow. After leaving grass clippings along my driveway and the street, I busted out the Husqvarna to get them back into the lawn. It made light work of the grass clippings. Next up was the debris challenge. I have a tree on my lawn that always drops little branches and fragments of tree bark. I took the 150BT to the base of the tree and got to workmaking sure to go after the big, dead branch fragments. Surprisingly, it scooted them along the driveway and right into the grassnot bad!

Lastly, I took this blower through the most important challenge: leaf cleanup. Using this on dry leaves was unfair. The blower eviscerated the dry leaves and pushed them across the tall fescue of my backyard with extreme ease.

I used this blower exclusively in my backyard week after week. Each week, I was more impressed by how easily it started up and how quickly I could clean up my yard in a classic mow, blow and go style.

Pros

  • Extremely powerful at 765 CFMs
  • 2.16-HP X-Torq engine helps cut back on emissions and fuel consumption
  • Air purge system removes air from carburetor and fuel system for trouble-free starting
  • Ergonomic design
  • Comfortable harness system
  • Relatively inexpensive
  • Husqvarna’s best-selling backpack blower

Cons

  • Loud
  • Requires routine maintenance

FAQ

What kind of gas does a Husqvarna backpack leaf blower use?

The Husqvarna backpack blower uses a mixture of regular gasoline and two-stroke oil. To mix, simply include 2.5 ounces of two-stroke oil for each gallon of gas.

Is CFM or MPH more important with a backpacker blower?

Both are equally important to a blower’s performance. High CFM means that the blower can push out air; however, it is meaningless without a high speed, measured by MPH.

What Other Reviewers Had to Say

With the nearly 2,000 other reviews that I found for this blower, the folks who purchased it in the past had a lot to say. Many folks who left reviews had owned the blower for over five years, which should tell you something about the reliability and longevity of the blower right away. Others speak about the surprising comfort of the blower and how they enjoy walking around their lawn with the blower. A few other reviews talk about how easily the blower startsgenerally within 1 to 2 pulls of the starter cord. And, of course, the most important piece that just about every reviewer states, is the blower’s power and ability to get the job done quickly.

Husqvarna Backpack Blower vs Stihl Backpack Blower

Husqvarna and Stihl both make amazing backpack leaf blowers. The Husqvarna 150BT and the Stihl BR 600 are two of the most popular backpack blowers in the space. The BR 600 is similar to the Husqvarna 150 BT in many ways starting with power. At 677 CFMs, the Stihl BR 600 has nearly as much power as the Husqvarna 150BT but falls short of the Husqvarna’s whopping 765 CFMs.

Both blowers have built-in comfort featuresadjustable support harnesses, cruise control and more. The BR 600 takes the cake when it comes to additional features, with a one-touch adjustable blower tube that can change the width of the nozzle without the need for attachments. Changing the nozzle width transforms this blower into a highly versatile lawn tool.

Lastly, the price comparison isn’t particularly close. The Husqvarna 150 BT comes at about $250 cheaper than the Stihl BR 600. The Husqvarna backpack blower has more power for less money.

Final Verdict

After testing and experiencing the Husqvarna 150BT, I am convinced it is one of the highest-value leaf blowers. Its comfortable operator experience and affordable price tag make it a top backpack blower. Husqvarna is known for unrivaled power and making high-quality lawn tools built to last, and they certainly knocked it out of the park with the 150BT backpack blower.

I Review Lawn Mowers for a Living, and Here’s My Experience with the Earthwise Reel Mower https://www.familyhandyman.com/article/earthwise-reel-mower-review/ Mon, 03 Jun 2024 19:36:47 +0000 For those of you that haven't used a reel mower, you're missing out. Here's my review of the Earthwise Reel Mower.

The post I Review Lawn Mowers for a Living, and Here’s My Experience with the Earthwise Reel Mower appeared first on Family Handyman.

]]>
Those of you who have yet to use a reel mower are missing out on an experience that can connect you to your yard in a new way. Reel mowers are one of the most straightforward ways to mow your lawn, falling to third place behind the scythe and maybe owning a goat or cow. Reel mowers are what your grandparents used back when they would scavenge the neighborhood trying to make a nickel to buy the latest gadget or whatchamacallit (this is what my Grandpa always said). But unlike other technologies that have come and gone, reel mowers are making a comebackstarting with the Earthwise Reel Mower.

The thing I like about reel mowers is that they are straightforward. For those of us who have ever used a “brick” cellphone and now have a fancy smartphone, don’t you miss the simplicity? I fondly remember pulling up the antenna on my phone, calling my mom, and then simply turning the phone off. This eventually evolved into my ringtone (Chingy, “Right Thurr”) days and now has turned into a full-blown addiction where I am so reliant on my phone that I sometimes want to throw it into the ocean.

Ok, back to the topic at hand. Wondering why you should go for a reel mower instead of something more techy? We consulted with Gene Cabellero at GreenPal to find out his expert take.

“Reel mowers are an excellent choice for environmentally conscious homeowners because they don’t produce emissions like gas-powered mowers,” Cabellero explains. “They’re quieter, allowing lawn care without neighborhood disturbances. These mowers offer a cleaner cut by slicing the grass like scissors, promoting healthier lawn growth and reducing disease risk.”

In many ways, lawnmowers have become too complicated. Don’t get me wrongI love a new electric lawn mower, but I often yearn for the days of old. Gas-powered lawn mowers, particularly the new electric and battery-powered mowers, tend to make life more complex. Multiple battery systems, maintenance, the inability to repair parts, too many moving parts, difficulty storing the mower, noise levels, exhaust, and the worst of them allthe high cost. Can’t someone just make it simple?

The answer to my woes was right under my nose. I got a chance to try out a half dozen reel mowers and was blown away by my experience. While I thought reel mowers would be difficult and annoying, I was committed to the experiment. Mind you, I’ve recently tested out some big-time mowers in my backyard, like the Toro TimeCutter zero-turn mower. I dreaded having to push a reel mower all over my yard. Nevertheless, I persisted–and I’m glad I did.

What is the Earthwise Reel Mower?

Earthwise Reel Mower Alex Kronk Ssedit A

The Earthwise Reel Mower appeared at my door and sat on my kitchen table for a few days. I thought it was a package for my wife. After a day or two, I got annoyed and finally opened it. It was a lawn mower inside what I thought was a shoebox. My recent experiences assembling Ikea furniture and cribs for our baby had me almost give up right then and there. This would be a set of Legos as a lawn mower.

But nothing could have been further from the truth. The box came out with a few simple pieces that fit together easily. A simple turn of the knob, an Allen wrench, and sliding a few pieces togetherboom, I was ready to go.

Once I had it set up in my garage, my wife came by with a simple, “That’s it?” What she expressed wasn’t judgment but shock that this mower was something she could easily usewhich she did.

The primary reason people buy this mower is its incredibly low price. The hook is the price, but its simplicity keeps people coming back for more. No maintenance schedule, storage concerns, or expensive batteries keep people pushing this type of mower year after year.

I Tried It

Earthwise Reel Mower

A simple, understated mower perfect for small yards

Earthwise Reel Mower Features

The Earthwise Reel Mower is 18 inches wide, which is the ideal size for smaller lawns. For comparison’s sake, most gas-powered and electric push mowers with a spinning propeller-type blade are around 20-21 inches wide but can vary from 14-30 inches.

The 18-inch width is enough to cover the lawn with each pass without becoming so wide that it is too difficult to push.

The mower also comes with five blades. Blades matter when it comes to reel mowers, and you should know some general rules before buying one. More blades equals more cutting. It sounds simple, but you need more blades for warm-season grasses to ensure a close cut to the surface of the lawn. For warm-season grasses, five to eight blades will get the job done well. Cool season and transitional grasses require fewer blades because the grass height is much longer and doesn’t require the fine shave that shorter grasses do. I’d recommend three to five blades for cool-season grasses on a reel mower.

I tried out a few reel mowers with T-shaped handles, and it was very easy to lose control and move off track. The straight handlebar on this mower makes it straightforward to control. Reel mowers can also come with additional wheels on the back that help adjust the mower’s height. They also help keep the mower balanced to stand up straight for storage. The cheapest reel mowers don’t have this feature, so seeing it on the Earthwise was a nice, luxurious bonus.

How I Tested It

Earthwise Reel Mower Alex Kronk Ssedit B

I tested this Earthwise reel mower in my backyard for a month. I’ve tested over 30 lawnmowers in my backyard, so it is a great place to compare this mower across all types.

While the stigma around reel mowers is that they are hard to push, I would disagree. Reel mowers aren’t hard to pushexcept for the first push. Once you get going, momentum carries the mower across the yard through the action of the blades and the gentle push you provide. I noticed that this reel mower is just under 25 pounds fully assembled. Compare that to my Honda gas mower, which is over 70 pounds. Yes, the reel mower requires some force to cut the grass, but the experience is similar to pushing a gas-powered mower overall.

There aren’t good options for bagging clippings when using a push mower, which is fine. I often get on my soapbox about how important it is to let your grass clippings provide nutrients to the rest of your lawn. The Earthwise reel mower had a very satisfying way of flinging the clippings into the air and showing proof that your mowing was working. Overall, it was a great experience.

As I mentioned, my wife also gave this mower a whirl. We both noticed immediately that we could talk while she was doing it. While most mowers require ear protection to keep out the intense noise that even electric mowers still make, this mower is peaceful and quiet and lets you listen to music or converse pretty easily while mowing your lawn.

Pros

  • Lightweight
  • Inexpensive
  • Quiet
  • No maintenance
  • Completely eco-friendly

Cons

  • Requires some effort
  • More narrow

FAQ

Who makes Earthwise mowers?

American Lawn Mower Company manufactures Earthwise mowers and other reel mower suites.

How long should a reel mower last?

With the occasional sharpening, reel mowers should last a lifetime.

Are reel mowers noisy?

Reel mowers produce virtually no noise.

Earthwise Reel Mower vs. Scotts Reel Mower

The Earthwise reel mower and the Scotts reel mower both offer an 18-inch cutting experience on your lawn. The Scotts mower has a few differences, including a modified handle that allows horizontal or vertical grip (almost like a bike with side handles) and has more blades. I recommend the Scotts mower for folks that have warm-season grass. The two additional blades will work much better with shorter grasses that need a “trim” versus the long, tall fescue, which is more suitable for mowers with five or fewer blades. The Earthwise is an excellent mower for those in transitional and cool-season zones, whereas the Scotts is better for folks in the deep South.

From a price perspective, the Earthwise is a bit cheaper than the Scotts reel mower. Frankly, both are great options but are designed for different audiences.

Final Verdict

I recommend buying the Earthwise reel mower for folks with smaller lawns who are okay with having an alternative mowing experience. It has a great combination of price, ease of use, and cutting ability that helps you have a simplified lawn mowing experience. Getting back to the basics and connecting with your backyard through some good old-fashioned elbow grease will give you a sense of pride in your lawn that you can’t get through a super-expensive machine or landscaper.
