Any hose that’s just lying on the ground probably hasn’t been drained properly. When the water inside turns to ice, it expands the casing, which turns brittle in the cold. The result is pinhole leaks or actual ruptures. In my experience as a landscaper, I’ve found expandable hoses to be the most vulnerable to winter damage, because their rubber casings are particularly thin (which is what makes them expandable). But ice and freezing temperatures can damage any kind of hose.

Who wants to start the growing season repairing a hose or having to buy a new one? Winterizing your hose is simple and takes just a few minutes. Here’s how.

Shut Off the Water

This seems obvious, but you might forget. Many hoses especially expandable ones have a lever-style valve that allows you to shut off water to the nozzle without actually turning off the spigot. If that valve is closed, and there’s pressure in the hose, you’re in for a soaking when you unscrew the hose from the spigot.

If you have a main water shutoff for the lawn and garden in the house, turn that off. If not, just make sure to fully close all the outdoor spigots by turning the handles clockwise.

• Pro tip: Besides damaging the hose, leaving the hose outside with the spigot open in freezing temperatures can also damage the spigot, and that’s harder to fix.

Disconnect the Hose

Start by squeezing the trigger on the spray nozzle to release the water pressure. When no more water flows, unscrew the nozzle and store it where you’ll find it next spring.

Now, you can disconnect the hose from the spigot. You may need pliers for this, especially if it’s been a while since you disconnected the hose. Some of those connectors can be really difficult to turn with your fingers. Always separate multiple hoses.

If the cold weather has already arrived, the hose might already be frozen. If so, connect the two ends, bring the hose inside to thaw and drain and coil it later.

Drain the Hose

If you have a slope or a flight of stairs on your property, the easiest way to drain a hose is to leave one end at the bottom, carry the other end to the top and let gravity do the work. On flat ground, leave one end near a place where water can safely drain, stretch the hose out, and lift the other end to shoulder height. Start walking while you keep a high loop that forces water out of the end that’s draining.

• Pro tip: Expandable hoses automatically expel water on their own, but it’s still a good idea to drain them this way to get all the water out.

Coil the Hose

Don’t just dump your hose in a pile in the basement or garage. That will produce kinks, and depending on the material from which the hose is made, some of these kinks could become permanent. Coil the hose instead.

To get a good coil, stretch the hose out straight. Make a circle on the ground about two or three feet in diameter at one end while you pull the hose toward you. Continue making more circles on top of the original one until you reach the other end. Finally, tie the hose with a piece of twine to prevent it from unraveling and to make it easier to transport and store.

Store the Hose Indoors

Bring the hose indoors to prevent it from getting brittle and cracking in the freezing temperatures. If you make a loop in the twine you wrapped around it, you can use that to hang the hose from a nail.

• Pro tip: A hose hanger, which you can purchase at any hardware store, makes coiling and storing the hose much easier. If you have one, you don’t need to coil the hose outdoors. Just bring it inside, coil it on the hanger, and leave it there for the winter.

There’s a rumor that rubbing a potato on a windshield in the evening prevents ice from forming overnight. Hmm. Sounds too good to be true. But since I happened to have a couple of potatoes that were otherwise bound for the compost pile and mornings hovering around 20 degrees I decided to give it shot.

I also asked a couple of experts for their take on whether rubbing a potato to stop ice on a windshield is a valid hack. Here’s what they said, plus the results from my experiment.

Potato De-Icing Hack, Explained

The claim is that rubbing a sliced side of a raw potato on a windshield at night will prevent ice from forming. This hack has been touted everywhere, from USA Today to the Farmers’ Almanac. “In the morning, you won’t have to scrape! Simply rinse and use your wipers to clear the windshield when you hit the road,” wrote the latter.

How Does It Work?

The way this hack claims to work is that the juice from the potato contains sugar, which creates a thin layer on the glass on which ice is less likely to form or adhere.

Do Potatoes Really Prevent Ice on Your Windshield?

Yes, in theory, say both Thomas Patterson of the Glass Doctor and Chris “Moose” Pyle, an automotive expert at JustAnswer.com. “A potato will help to keep ice buildup on your glass and mirrors,” says Pyle. “It does work but, also leaves a residue, and it has to be done every day.”

For my experiment, I opted to try it on just a portion of my windshield so I could see the difference between the potato-treated glass and the rest of the windshield. In the photos, the potato treatment is on the lower left (passenger side).

In my case, it didn’t prevent frost, but it did cause the crystal structure to be less durable. Ultimately, that helped the potato section defrost slightly more quickly but not enough to be worth the effort of chopping up a potato every night. However, this was not the most scientific of studies, so I imagine the effectiveness of a potato in preventing ice on a windshield also depends on the overall thickness of the frost, the rate of temperature change, relative humidity and other factors.

Ellen Flowers, travel editor at The Perennial Style, also experimented with this hack. She heard the tip while traveling in Finland, and decided to give it a try. It worked a little, but not as well as she had hoped, she says; kind of like what happened to me.

“Still, it taught me an important lesson about winter survival; it’s not always about finding the perfect fix, but about being resourceful and making the best of what you have,” she says. “Whether it’s a potato, a windshield cover or a good ice scraper, the real secret is learning to embrace the cold with a bit of creativity and practicality.”

Are There Better Alternatives?

Yes. “Although the sugars in the potato will create a barrier that does, in fact, prevent ice buildup and fogging of the glass, there are much better solutions,” says Patterson. He recommends using a hydrophobic coating designed to prevent ice buildup, which is also compatible with newer automotive safety system technologies such as optical cameras.

Pyle also recommends covering the windshield at night with an unfolded cardboard box, “which you can pull off in the morning and store in the car until the next evening,” he says. “Once the box wears out, buy something you want from Amazon and get a new box: win-win.”

He also suggests:

• Rain X, which will help prevent water from sticking to the glass long enough to freeze;
• A $20 waterproof fabric windshield cover; or
• Spray deicer, which dissolves ice and helps to prevent re-accumulation.

If you don’t feel like buying a pre-made deicer, Brandon Hartman, founder of RV Heating Warehouse, suggests DIYing a batch by combining vinegar and water, or rubbing alcohol and water, in a spray bottle.

How We Tested It

Associate product testers Sheri Kaz and Dylan Fischer were especially excited to put these Felco pruners to the test after receiving a glowing recommendation from Sheri’s local forester, Dennis Fermenich.

“My city forester only recommends the Felco 2,” says Kaz. “In 30 years, he has replaced the spring and the blade. He assures me that the blade stays sharp with an occasional swipe on a sharpening stone and adjustments can be made between the blades to keep the cut clean,” she says.

Kaz and Fischer began the testing process by noting the pruners’ weight, measurements and callout features. Once they wrapped up their observations, our team took these Felco pruners into Sheri’s backyard for testing. They gathered three sizes of wooden dowels, three sizes of deadwood branches and stems and three sizes of greenwood branches and stems, including cherry wood and an asparagus plant.

The first test was with a series of 0.25-inch stems. Sheri, whose hand is an inch shorter than Dylan’s, cut through a dowel, greenwood stem and deadwood branch with her right hand. The pruners provided a clean cut and Sheri found them easy to operate. On a scale of 1 through 5, Sheri gave the Felco pruners a 3 for the amount of force required. “This one wasn’t as easy to cut with as we thought it would be,” she says.

Sheri opted to pass the pruners onto Dylan for the remainder of the tests, since she says she has less hand and grip strength. Dylan, who is left-handed, cut through a 0.5-inch dowel, green cherrywood stem and deadwood branch. “This was painful on the half-inch dowel,” explains Sheri. “Dylan had to give up and reposition and undercut it to get the blades to fully cut through. However, on the real deadwood branch we used that was close to half an inch, the shears cut through it easily.”

For the final test, Dylan used the pruners to cut through a 0.75-inch dowel, deadwood branch and asparagus. He notes that it sliced cleanly through asparagus like hot butter but it did not cut through the dowel or deadwood.

After cutting a variety of stems, our team agreed that the tension on this shear felt good. They also noted that it works nicely and springs back with little effort when cutting small and green stems. However, anything beyond 0.5-inch thickness will likely require the use of two hands and some extra force.

According to our testers, the Felco 31 consistently left slight indents underneath the cut line. When cutting 0.5-inch stems, Kaz and Fischer referred to the cut quality as “just fine.” In addition to the indents that were left below the cut lines, our testers found a small amount of tearing on the green cherry branch, too.

How Does This Car Insurance Scam Work?

In the insurance scam caught on camera, the scammers break-checked the person in back of them in an effort to cause a crash, but when that failed, they backed into the victim. The group of con artists then shuffled around in the car to cause further confusion about who the driver was. They rub their necks and hold their heads in their hands and start taking photos in order to get the victim to react quickly. But when they noticed the dash cam on the victim’s car, they fled the scene.

The National Insurance Crime Bureau (NICB) says scams like this are more common in areas that see higher traffic, and that scammers will “often target new, rental, or commercial vehicles because they tend to be well-insured.”

If this insurance scam had gone according to plan, the scammers would have reported the accident to insurance to collect the payout. Since the victim was the one in the back, in the absence of video proof, it would have be hard to prove they were not at fault, leaving them with a higher insurance premium and an accident on their record that wasn’t actually their fault. Making matters worse, the scammers would have been free to go off and repeat their scam.

How to Protect Yourself From Car Insurance Scams

The number one thing you can do to protect yourself from fake accident insurance scams is to have video evidence exonerating you. If you ever find yourself in this unfortunate situation, it’ll be your word against the scammer’s, and in most cases, the rear car is legally at fault.

Don’t just film on your phone the whole time; it isn’t safe, and it’s also an unnecessary drain on your battery. Instead, you might want to invest in a dash cam for your car. That’s what stopped this scammer, and it may protect you from this and other car accident scams.

What Is Enamel Paint?

Enamel paint dries to an ultra-hard, glossy finish and it is typically used on surfaces that require a tough, long-lasting coat. Traditionally solvent-based (using oil or urethane), enamel paint has recently become available as a water-based product.

“Waterborne enamel has become widely available and offers several advantages,” Pancione says. “It’s easier to work with, applies smoothly, and cleans up more easily.” However, solvent-based enamels dry to a harder, more durable finish.

Is Enamel Paint Safe?

Yes, enamel paint is safe to use, but there are some safety considerations to take when using solvent-based enamels.

Oil and urethane-based products produce strong fumes that can become dangerous in a poorly ventilated space. To avoid prolonged exposure, always wear a canister mask and work in a well-ventilated room. These fumes can be flammable, so make sure to work away from any open flame source.

Water-based enamels produce fewer fumes and are a safer choice in a home with pets or children. “The tech has come so far with the water-based products that you get all the benefits of an enamel with less VOCs and flammability,” Otto says.

How Long Does Enamel Paint Take to Dry?

Enamel paints will dry to the touch between two and six hours but can take between 24 and 72 hours to fully cure. Water-based enamels will dry faster than oil and urethane-based products. “The paint needs this time to fully cure to that ultra-hard finish,” Otto says. For example, if using enamel to paint a floor, you would need to wait the full cure time before replacing furniture or introducing foot traffic to achieve the full protection of the paint.

How Much Does Enamel Paint Cost?

A gallon of enamel paint can cost between $80 to $100, “but it depends on whether it’s oil or water-based, and what its specific purpose is,” Otto says. Benjamin Moore’s Cabinet Coat enamel is less expensive than their Direct to Metal (DTM) enamel. “It really comes down to how it’s formulated and produced.”

What Should You Use Enamel Paint For?

For residential applications, enamel paint is a great choice for cabinets, trim, floors, doors and furniture. “Enamels resist wear and tear, including harsh cleaning chemicals, making them the go-to choice for high-traffic areas like doors and cabinets that need frequent cleaning,” Pancione says. Enamel paint in a spray can is also often used to refinish outdoor grills and metal surfaces, as well as outdoor furniture.

What Should You Avoid Using Enamel Paint For?

Interior walls and ceilings are not good candidates for enamel paint. The glass-like finish of enamel paint highlights any surface imperfections, which can be difficult to avoid on large wall and ceiling surfaces. Otto recommends not using enamels on anything your children will use regularly. “It takes so long to cure,” she says. “While it may seem like a good idea on, say, a swing set, there are faster-drying products you can use instead.” The ultra-glossy finish of enamels can be slippery, so are also not a good choice for stairs.

How We Tested It

Product testers Sheri Kaz and Dylan Fischer led the charge and set out to see what the DR Leaf and Lawn Vacuum was really made of. After unpacking and assembling the machine, they added the oil and gas and started it up. Initially, both testers found it difficult to start.

“Dylan couldn’t figure out how to properly work the choke valve, so we had to recruit some city workers,” explains Kaz. “Of course, the guy (shout out to Greenfield City Worker, Bruce!) was able to start it immediately without asking a single question.”

According to our testers, the choke lever on this machine is a piece of metal that the instructions say must be pushed inward. In reality, it needs to be pulled more to the side when starting the engine, then slowly released as the engine revs up.

Once the unit was up and running, we scattered roughly 30 gallons of leaves across two 10-foot by 4-foot rectangles of grass. One rectangle had dry leaves, and the other had damp leaves that had been misted by a hose. Our testers recorded the time it took the DR Leaf and Lawn Vacuum to suck up each set of leaves on the highest setting.

For both the wet and dry leaf tests, the DR Leaf and Lawn Vacuum gave an impressive performance, sucking up almost everything in its path in just one pass. They also appreciated how the chipper automatically turns on without you having to do anything, so it’s always ready to be fed sticks.

Fischer notes that this leaf vacuum isn’t too bad when it comes to maneuverability and feels very similar to a push lawnmower.

What wasn’t ideal, however, was the amount of dust that this unit produced.

“This machine spit out a lot of dust behind it, and Dylan was in the direct line of fire,” says Kaz. “He stopped and had to put on safety eyewear.” The team attributes this to the tubing, which spits debris out toward the top of the vacuum instead of the bottom.

Once everything had been sucked up, our testers noted that the contents of the leaf bag had been mulched up very fine and small. They also pointed out that the on-board chipper is a great feature to have.

The Toro Ultra Blower Vac is an electric leaf blower that also functions as a leaf vacuum. It has a 4-inch cord and a detachable leaf bag you wear on your shoulder while vacuuming up leaves and debris. In our studio, this blower weighed in at 7.45 pounds. Between its lightweight design, two handles and easy-to-use power knob, the Toro Ultra Blower Vac is comfortable to hold and easy to maneuver.

In blower mode, its motor produces a velocity and air volume of up to 340 cubic feet per minute (CFM), shooting air out at 260 miles per hour (MPH). Though still fairly fine, our testers noted that the mulch produced by this blower is larger than that produced by some other models.

How We Tested It

The Product Testing Team, led by associate product testers Sheri Kaz and Dylan Fischer, took the Toro Ultra Blower Vac into the Testing Lab to see whether it could meet the demands of a fall cleanup. They carefully assessed its assembly and setup, as well as its performance as both a leaf blower and leaf vacuum. Of all the units they tested, the Toro Ultra Blower Vac’s user manual was their least favorite. Unclear instructions made assembly more difficult, especially when it came time to attach one piece in particular. “There’s a detached ‘bottom inlet cover’ that needs to be attached, and the directions that supposedly explain how to do so are very poor,” explains Kaz.

Once they finished their initial assembly, however, the team was impressed by the unit’s ergonomics, noting that the two handles are nice to hold and the built-in cord management system is well designed and secure.

To test the Toro’s performance, our team scattered dry leaves around a yard, then blew them into a designated 4×10-foot area, evaluating the blower’s directional control, ease of use and noise level. According to our testers, this unit performed best when kept at exactly the right angle. “Blowing capabilities are a lot weaker,” notes Kaz. “You need to be at a pretty low angle to get the best performance from this one’s blowing function. Dylan was bent over much of the time when using this machine.”

After they finished blowing the leaves, Fischer and Kaz set out to test the vacuum function on the Toro Ultra Blower Vac. To convert the machine from a leaf blower to a leaf vacuum, they had to swap the blower tube for the vacuum tube and press the fan inlet cover into place. While it seemed easy enough, it required a bit of elbow grease from Fischer. “It was a little finicky to convert the blower to the vacuum. The plastic fittings were not smooth, which made us wonder if we were doing something wrong,” explains Kaz. “We referred back to the user manual several times while using and it took both of Dylan’s hands to press this fan inlet cover into placeit was very stiff.”

To test the Toro’s vacuum capabilities, the team spread roughly 30 gallons of leaves across two rectangles of grass. One rectangle they covered in dry leaves while the other had damp leaves which they’d misted with a hose. Our testers timed how long it took to suck up each rectangle’s leaves while evaluating the machine’s ergonomics, maneuverability, noise level and more. According to Kaz and Fischer’s report, it took just under three minutes to suck up all of the dry leaves and about one minute to suck up the wet ones. Fischer and Kaz agree that it was much easier to use the Toro Ultra Blower Vac as a leaf vacuum than as a leaf blower.

Despite some setbacks, our Product Testing Team recommends the Toro Ultra Blower Vac to anyone shopping on a budget. Given its low price point, vacuum performance and maneuverability, it’s a great value overall. “The placement of the grip handles allow for solid maneuverability, which ended up being very useful as we had to bend over to get the best performance out of the blowing function,” says Fischer.

How We Tested It

The Billy Goat leaf vacuum was a freight delivery and arrived on a pallet. To our surprise, it arrived fully assembled and even had some gas in it. Our first order of business was to complete the bag break-in period. As mentioned above, this necessary break-in period required us to set the machine on concrete and run it at half throttle for the first half-hour. The process is to allow the air in through the nozzle to create effective pathways through the pores of the bag.

We then set out to see what this machine was really made of. We scattered roughly 30 gallons of leaves across two 10-by-4 rectangles of grass. One rectangle had have dry leaves, and the other had wet leaves. Our testers recorded the time it took the Billy Goat leaf vacuum to such up each set of leaves on the highest setting.

For both the wet and dry leaf test, the Billy Goat passed with flying colors, sucking up everything in its path in just two passes. “Of the two walk-behind vacs we tested, this one is much more comfortable to push around. The weight feels more evenly distributed and it’s much easier to make turns with,” explains the product testing team. “Pulling the clutch bar will also propel this thing. It can easily fly out from your hands if you’re not ready for it.”

Once everything had been sucked up, it was time to empty the bag. Though the zipperless design makes it easy to remove the bag, our testers found it difficult to do alone due to its bulk.

“Emptying the bag is hard because it was bulky even halfway full,” explains the product testing team. “It’s a two-person job to remove the bag when it’s full. It’s too large to empty into a paper leaf bag or a standard-size trash can, and we had to use multiple receptacles to clear this one fully. It would be much easier to dump this one directly on a compost pile.”

Another thing to consider is the fact that the wet leaves left stains near the top of the felt bag where it connects to the vacuum. And while our testers note that this doesn’t bear any effect on the actual performance of the machine, it is pretty unsightly.

Our experts on the product testing team tested two leaf vacuums: The Billy Goat Lawn & Litter Vacuum and the DR Leaf and Lawn Vacuum. While the team loved the DR lawn vacuum’s chipper, they found that it was more difficult to maneuver than the Billy Goat lawn vacuum. While the Billy Goat is self-propelled and easy to to move and turn, our testers noted that the DR is too stiff to be able to easily tilt the machine back for quick turns.

Moreover, the DR is harder to start. “The big issue here is the choke lever. It’s a flimsy-feeling piece of metal that you’re told needs to be pushed inward,” explains the product testing team. “In reality, it needs to be pulled more to the side when starting the engine, then slowly released per the engine noises until it sounds good. There’s a choke lever on the Billy Goat as well, but it’s way more automated, as it’s just a flip of a switch.”

Additionally, there’s the issue of dust. According to Fuenmayor, leaf vacuums can create a lot of dust in hot, dry weather. “The dust passes through the bags membrane and sticks to any exposed, sweaty skin, leaving you dirty,” he says. How We Tested It

The first thing that stood out to me about this sprayer was the case that it came in. I often find that molded plastic cases are almost useless as it seems impossible to get the tools back into their designated slots. In this case (pun intended), the parts were easily stowed and the case could be buttoned up.

The next thing I noticed is what I would call built-in nozzles. Most of the hand-held sprayers that Ive used utilize a type of two-part metal nozzle wherein you pick the fluid tip size based on your material. You then insert a matching needle tip, which is prone to getting lost, even if just dropped onto carpeting or grass, not to mention floating around at the bottom of a tool box. These needless nozzles seemed like a bonus and definitely were.

I set out to paint the exterior of one of my wooden sheds, which was in serious need of painting. After power washing it, scraping off some old paint and waiting for it to dry, I filled the 1300-milliliter (approximately 1/3rd gallon) that works with the iSpray nozzle with an inexpensive, acrylic-based exterior paint and primer in one. I attached the iSpray nozzle, which is supposed to mimic the texture of a roller, and plugged in the sprayer. Since it was just an outside shed, I eschewed practice and fine-tuning in water or on cardboard and went straight for the shed.

Tuning and Usage

As expected, some fine-tuning was required. I ended up with a few drips, but that was entirely user error and not a result of the settings, which I had adjusted based on the usagehaving set the X-boost power dial (I.e., the air power) to the middle of its range and the material flow control to the middle of its range. Also, I had the spray width set to wide, and after some technique adjustments, this worked out to be a great combination of power and volume for the paint.

I went through the first container of paint rather quickly due to my futzing around with the technique. As such, I was a little worried about how much paint I was going through. But by the time I was onto my second container of paint, I was getting great distance and coverage. I was able to get a single coat onto approximately 60 square feet with less than 1/3 of a gallon of paint. This amount is spot on if estimating that I can spray 150 to 200 square feet per gallon.

The coating was even at the start and end of the spray cycle, as well as at the edges of the spray pattern. I used the common overlap technique with horizontal paths and completed the edges with the spray width set to the narrow setting. The nozzle cleanup was quick and painless. I was really pleased with the results: The shed went from a sad and dreary backyard eyesore to looking like a proud member of the outdoor decor.

The system is somewhat closed to the elements, so it is ok to leave paint in the sprayer for short periods between use, such as overnight or for a break. Before using the sprayer, after it has sat, be sure to mix the paint in the container. Also, it will likely be necessary to remove paint from the hardened nozzle tip. Once its cleared, you should be good to go.

Lately Ive been using an Earlex HVLP sprayer for my smaller projects. The Earlex HVLP sprayer is a good comparison for the Wagner Flexio 3500 as they are both handheld HVLP sprayers. The Earlex comes in at a lower price and is lighter so let’s take a look at the usage.

The Earlex is differs from the Wagner in that it uses nozzles that are matched to your material and desired finish. On the other hand, the Wagner just has two nozzlesone for fine spraying and one for wider, textured spraying. Another key difference is that the air cap, either fine or wide spray, must be selected on the Earlex. The Earlex does not come with a case and it’s important to keep all the nozzles together with the sprayer. I keep my nozzles and tools in a plastic bag but still don’t have a convenient way to ensure that the bag is with the sprayer. Its these factors along with the cleanup that makes the Wagner a clear winner for being easier to use.

Final Verdict

At first, I wasnt convinced the two-nozzle solution was going to be adequate. It proved to be more than adequate and Im sold. A lot of the experimentation and guesswork were taken away by knowing that the either nozzle could handle whatever material I was going to use. Plus, the cleanup was such a breeze that I dont dread pulling out the sprayer. This sprayer will be taking a front-and-center space in my collection of painting tools. I look forward to more projects with it.

Feedback from conversations with two knowledgeable sales reps helped me craft my overall view to answer the question, whether a Tesla Cybertruck is a good work truck.

A couple of caveats:

• Although the regional Tesla dealership I visited had a Cybertruck on the showroom floor, I could not road-test it. (Note: Everything Cybertruck, from scheduling a road test to purchasing one, is done strictly online.)
• Since the truck has only been out for around six months, there is no quality, reliability or crash test data to assess this new vehicle completely.

That said, read along to see what was learned.

Cybertruck Bed Size vs. Standard Short and Long Bed Pickups

A typical standard short bed on a four-door crew cab pickup is approximately 70 inches (63 cu. ft. of storage), while the longer bed is approximately 80 inches (72 cu. ft.). The short bed on a traditional two-door pickup is approximately 80 inches (72 cu. ft.), and the long bed 99 inches (82 cu. ft.).

The four-door Cybertruck cargo bed is 73 inches long and has additional storage compartments and a weather-tight hidden cargo space, for a total storage space of 67cu.ft.

If you’re going to use a Cybertruck as a work truck, an external tailgate and bumper cover protect the body from damage. Roof rack crossbars for carrying ladders or supplies and a tailgate ramp are options to consider.

Is the Cybertruck a Good Work Truck?

Even with the caveats, if you want to spend $100,000 on a Cybertruck, and based on Consumer Reports Tesla new car reliability, my gut says yes, it will make a good work truck. I was seriously impressed with the Cybertruck I looked at, touched and sat in. It was solid as a rock. The size, fit and finish, in my opinion, were spot on.

There are some cons, such as limited visibility, but the six external cameras and all-wheel steering (AKA “crab-walk”) would make moving around a work site safer and easier.

As a Tesla sales rep described, the 20 in. tires, the armor plate protecting the battery against damage from rocks and debris when driving through rough terrain and different off-road modes (including one mode that employs an adaptive air suspension raising the suspension and pressurizes the high-voltage battery to prevent water intrusion when driving through shallow water) all reduce the possibility of damaging the battery and undercarriage when driving around a work or construction site.

Currently, Tesla does not offer a way to mount snowplowing equipment or a bed cab for additional storage, but I did find a few sites online that offer unique and functional accessories to nicely outfit the Cybertruck as a work truck. The Cybertruck comes standard with exceptional towing and load ratings, the ability to power your home or power tools, and all the refinements, essentials and qualities you want and expect in any decent work truck.

The Bosch GLM100-23 is the most basic of the two Bosch laser measure tools we tested. The GLM 100-23 would work well in a DIYer’s or professional’s tool kit to supplement a standard tape measure. The device features no metric measuring functions; however, it does have instant point-and-shoot measuring ability in an impressively compact design. It’s also incredibly accurate at taking precise measurements indoors.

The GLM50C is more advanced. Its many features make it a solid choice for professionals and avid DIYers who primarily work indoors. The tool incorporates a bright and easy-to-read screen, rotating display, canvas carrying case, clip and Bluetooth capability. Additionally, it’s designed for use with Bosch’s MeasureOn mobile app, which provides more advanced features as well.

How We Tested Them

Our testing team evaluated and tested both Bosch Laser Measure devices. The testers reported on everything from unboxing and standard use to mobile app functionality for each one.

Testing involved manually checking accuracy under several typical working conditions, reporting on the device’s size and comfort, operating all of the device’s functions and mixing combinations of functions when applicable. While the models we tested included red laser technology, intended for indoor use only, the company’s outdoor-capable green laser devices, such as the Blaze 165 ft Green Laser Distance Measuring Tool, also earn an average of 4.7 stars with The Home Depot customers.

Positive reviews typically cite the tools’ compact designs, lightweight, spot-on accuracy and durability as the reasons for the high praise. However, some negative reviews exist. Reports of inaccurate measurements and an inability to operate red laser technology devices outdoors are the top reasons for lower ratings.

Bosch Laser Measure vs. Leica Laser Measure

We also tested the Leica Laser Measure and compared it to our Bosch Blaze Bluetooth-Enabled device. While the devices are pretty similar in function, the Leica Laser Measure has a measuring capacity of up to 330 feet, while the Bosch maxes out at 165 feet.

Both devices can function with a proprietary mobile app and provide additional functions like distance measuring, multiple measurements, data-point storage, and area and volume calculations.

The Leica offers a Pythagoras function and a 60-second timer delay option. However, Bosch’s MeasureOn app is free to use, while Leica’s requires a paid subscription. The MeasureOn app from Bosch is more functional, too. Our testers discovered some connectivity troubles with the Leica app as well.

Additionally, the Leica tool is more costly, retailing for $199 against Bosch’s $119 price tag.

Final Verdict

While the two Bosch laser measuring tools we tested are very different from each other based on functionality, both impressed our testing team for performing well in compact, well-designed and easy-to-operate forms.

The lower-cost choice will best serve DIYers looking for a basic tool to make measuring distances easier than with a standard tape measure. The tool can also be a supplemental device for quick measurements and layouts.

The higher-cost Bosch device will work well for serious DIYers with a lot to accomplish, as well as for professionals who are looking for a fast way to convert numerous measurements into complex calculations.

While we were hoping to find a Bosch laser tape measure that we could use outdoors at an affordable cost, that didn’t pan out for us.

During testing, the cleaner would move six to eight feet across the floor, then pivot its wheels to turn from 90 to 360 degrees; however, that made it harder for the cleaner to target specific areas and not repeatedly clean the same area.

The cleaners hose is easy to put together and customize to the size of your pool. The cleaner comes with 10 two-foot hoses that couple together seamlesslyno messing with long hose lengths or cutting required.

How We Tested It

Content Director Nicole Doster set up, installed and used the Hayward Pool Cleaner in her own backyard pool.

Installation was very simple, which is one of the biggest perks of this product, she says. The hoses fit together in less than 10 minutes, and the cleaner head came fully assembled.

The cleaner also has multiple ways to attach the unit to the pools suction port. You can insert a valve adapter nose cone into the pools skimmer, use a vac lock that screws onto a designated suction port, or insert the hose directly into a vac lock.

We already had a vac lock installed, so this was the option we chose, Nicole says.

Our initial tests for the pool cleaner involved placing the Hayward Cleaner side-by-side with our other pool cleaners, Nicole explains. We added four cups of dirt and debrisranging from fine sediment to small pebblesto the bottom of our 24- by 16-foot pool. We measured how quickly and thoroughly the cleaner cleaned up the debris.

The Hayward Pool Cleaner was Nicoles favorite of the bunch. It was slow and steady and picked up most of the debris, she says. It picked up so much dirt and sediment that it filled up the pools filter very quickly (within minutes) to the point where it kept getting stuck. Luckily, we dont usually have that much debris in the pool, so it just showed the cleaner’s suction power. Overall, the pool cleaner is very hands-off and easy to use.

Nicole continued testing the cleaner for over three months. She also phoned a veteran pool owner, Bobby Attonito, who has over thirty years of pool cleaning and maintenance experience. After using the Hayward Pool Cleaner in his own 15-by-30-foot kidney-shaped pool, Bobby said, Ive owned Hayward products before, but this is the most sophisticated by far.

Bobby noted that the cleaner does not go far up the sides of the poolonly about two feet before dropping down, but that it is not an issue for him. He also said cleaning the entire pool takes roughly three hours.While he didnt have any issues with broken parts or repairs, Attonito was pleased to note that Hayward always offers parts and repair guides for its products, making them easy to fix if something breaks in the future.

I think I will have this product for the rest of my life, Bobby says.

After three months of daily testing, Bobby said the cleaner didnt clog. It even picked up small stones that his past pool vacuums would get clogged with.

After unboxing the Milwaukee laser measure, our testers immediately felt that it was durable. The device is a digital alternative to a standard tape measure. Its red and black impact-resistant casing protects the backlit color read-out screen, and a few simple buttons operate all of the device’s features, one of which is its ability to store up to 30 measurement data points.

The Milwaukee laser measure uses a red laser beam to measure between objects or points with an accuracy level within 1/16 of an inch. The tool also offers measurement recording and the ability to perform functions like calculating total distance, area, and volume, allowing you to put down the pencil for a minute and let the tool do the hard work for you.

Digital tape measures are available in several forms. While some are no more complex to use than simply pointing and shooting, others have additional functions to help you calculate multiple distances, volumes, and areas. The Milwaukee laser measure is one of the latter devices. How We Tested It

Our product testing team ran the Milwaukee laser measure through its paces (in the team’s Milwaukee office, ironically). Overall, they determined that the tool was worthy of consideration, with a few concerns. Setting up the device was simple and only required the installation of a pair of AA batteries that Milwaukee included in the package. Our tester then had to follow the instructions to figure out how to switch from metric to standard readings and back. We expected this function to be a simple click. However, it turned out that more than a single step was involved.

Using the device, our tester determined that it’s at least as accurate as the company’s claim of being almost spot-on with a plus or minus of 1/16th of an inch. The tester liked the two measuring activation buttons, one on the top and one on the side, which made using the device in tight spaces a snap. The two-position auto-detecting lever also made awkward measurements a breeze. A note from the tester also reveals that the high-contrast viewing screen works flawlessly in almost any light.

However, the notes went on to explain that working the added functions, including adding up multiple measurements, finding square area totals, and calculating volumes, required several steps that weren’t intuitive. In fact, the tester reported having to consult the directions several times, noting that, for those who might use the tool every day, the steps would become second nature. However, casual, infrequent users may find remembering all of the steps to be tiresome.

In general, there are two laser colors available for use in laser tools, such as measures and levels, including green and red. Technology.org reports that red lasers appear dimmer to the human eye than green ones do, especially in sunlight. However, even green lasers often require the use of a laser detector in very bright conditions.

That said, we didn’t hold the red-laser fact against Milwaukee for this tool. While green laser tools have dropped in price recently, they’re still more for use in professional settings and carry significantly higher price tags. The Milwaukee Laser Measure is geared more toward professionals who’ll use it indoors or for DIYers who plan to use it around the home.

Negative reviews often mirror our tester’s findings that the tool doesn’t work well in sunlight, and a few reviewers note that it could be easier to operate for the price Milwaukee charges. Among numerous laser measuring tools we tested, we also got our hands on the Bosch laser measure and compared it side-by-side against the Milwaukee version. While the two are quite different in terms of functionality, both have excellent features that make either a solid addition to your DIY tool collection.

The Bosch Blaze 100-foot laser measure costs less than half of the Milwaukee laser measure. However, it doesn’t provide several of the additional functions that the Milwaukee one does. Where the Milwaukee laser measure is a full-function measuring, storing, and calculating device, the Blaze is designed more for simple measuring tasks.

Both devices feature a compact design, user-friendly buttons, and easy-to-read displays. Both also operate using red lasers, giving them a limited-use status for the outdoors. However, that’s pretty much where the similarities end. The Bosch, while capable of rounding up or down to the nearest measurement, can’t calculate areas or volumes.

For pros and DIYers who are willing to spend the extra money to have their measuring tool perform calculations for them, the Milwaukee Laser Measure is the way to go. However, if simple, fast, and accurate measuring is all you need, save some cash and choose the Blaze.

Final Verdict

Overall, we found the Milwaukee laser measure to be worth its somewhat elevated price tag. It took some time for our tester to sort through the instructions to realize the tool’s potential. However, once that was achieved, the reporting was mostly positive, despite the fact that it’s not very effective for use outdoors.

Our testing team liked the tool’s compact design and its ability to perform in tight or awkward spaces. The display screen was more than adequate for viewing, and the two-position activation buttons made the device even more versatile.

For those who work outdoors, the Milwaukee laser measure may be a little underperforming due to the red laser (it may be worth shelling out for a green laser tool in that case). However, DIYers and professionals who work primarily indoors can truly get some stuff done with the help of this tool.

You can often tell if an electric motor is designed to be oiled if it has oil ports near the motor shaft above the bearings. If you find such a beast, don’t ignore it. “Regular maintenance can extend the lifespan of your electric motors,” says Shlomo Cherniak, owner of Cherniak Home Services. “Therefore, always check your devices’ manuals for specific oiling instructions and intervals.”

Here’s how to oil an electric motor and which oil to use.

How to Oil an Electric Motor

• Before you service any electric motor, first turn off the appliance and unplug it if possible (especially if the owner’s manual instructs to do so).
• Locate the oil ports and wipe them clean. “For something like a furnace or other parts of an HVAC system, look for oil ports, typically near the motor shaft,” says Melanie Powers, president at Goodberlet Home Services.
• Apply the oil. Typically, a few drops are all that are needed for small household motors.
• Wipe off excess oil to prevent it from collecting dust, and avoid over-oiling since that can clog the motor.
• Repeat annually (or as needed).

What Kind of Oil Do You Use for Electric Motors?

Most household electric motors call for a non-detergent all-in-one SAW 20 electric motor oil. But some motors might require various other kinds of grease specifically formulated for that machine, so refer to the appliance manual to find the correct oil.

“For example, hair trimmers with electric motors use a different viscosity lubricant than an electric garbage disposal motor does,” says Brandon Walker, superintendent at ASAP Restoration. “If you try to use one in place of the other, you will cause a burn-out of the motor, or worse.”

“The most common pitfall [to oiling an electric motor] is using the wrong type of oil,” says Cherniak. “Avoid automotive oils, as they are usually too thin and contain detergents that can damage the motor.” Be sure not to use automotive oil on electric motors, as it can dissolve insulation and fry the motor.

Why do you have to use a specialized oil for electric motors?

Powers says it’s important to use the correct oil for electric motors to prevent buildup and because electric motors generate high heat temperatures, so you want an oil that can perform under such conditions.

Using the correct specialized oil also prolongs the life of the motor by reducing friction on the bearings, thus preventing wear. “Using oils with the wrong viscosity will cause the parts to abrade each other, and this friction contact causes heat, which then further degrades the oil and causes a runaway cycle,” says Walker.

Do all electric motors need oil?

No, not all electric motors need oil. Many electric motors have sealed bearings and are designed to be maintenance-free.

“For bearings that are intended to operate in contact with one another, then you likely won’t need oil at all,” says Walker. “For the kinds that do require it, then it must be a specialized formulation.”

Where are the most common electric motors around the house that need oil?

Most modern-day electric motors are sealed and don’t need to be oiled. But, depending on the make, model and age, some household electric motors that may need to be oiled include:

• HVAC systems
• Electric pumps

One of the easiest, most common (and usually the simplest to diagnose) heater blower repairs was replacing the blower motor resister module. Ahead, information from experienced ASE Master automotive technicians will help you get your blower motor working at all speeds.

How Does a Car Heater Fan Work?

Voltage powers the car heater fan blower motor, but the current drives motor speed. In a simple heater fan circuit, the power (voltage) is fed from the junction block, or ignition switch, which is connected to the battery, then through a fuse, to the dashboard multi-speed fan switch. The speed fan switch then directs the voltage to the resistor module.

Depending on the amount of air you want coming from the ducts, usually there are four speeds to choose from. The resistor module raises or lowers the current being sent to the blower motor, and the air starts to flow as a soft breeze (low speed) or driving wind (high speed).

Air passing over the heater core warms up your car on frigid mornings. Conversely, air going through the AC evaporator coil on blazing summer days cools down your vehicle’s interior.

Why Is My Car Heater Fan Only Working on One Speed?

ASE Master Technician and certified automotive technology instructor Bill Kirkpatrick recommends “always check the fuses first,” but said, “the most likely cause would be a defective resistor in the blower motor circuit.” Kirkpatrick added that “a defective [fan speed] switch or related wiring could cause only one speed,” though this is less likely.

Most car manufacturers use different rated resistors that allows you to run the blower motor at different speeds in series (or daisy chained) like old-fashioned Christmas tree lights, which means that when one of the bulbs burns out, none of the other bulbs will light.

When one or more of these resistors burn out (like the Christmas lights), you’re usually left with only one heater blower motor speedhigh. That’s because higher current that powers high blower motor speed is usually supplied through a separate leg of the blower motor fan circuit and a heavy-duty relay.

What is a blower motor resistor module?

Resistors are just that: they resist the flow of electrons. “Depending on the blower motor fan speed switch position, the blower motor resistor module uses internal resistors that increase or decrease the amount of current (flow of electrons) to the blower motor,” says Joe Simes, ASE and Toyota Master Technician.

On older vehicles, blower motor resistor modules used different diameters and lengths of coiled wire as resistors to adjust current flow. Newer vehicle resistor modules use transistors to control current flow. Simes added, “Transistors allow for several different fan speeds, but the concept is exactly the same.

Consequently, Simes noted, “Modern/automatic car climate control systems having digital displays may have the blower resistors (transistors) integrated into the blower switch.” He recommends leaving this fix to the pros.

How To Fix a Blower Motor Module

Purchase a new resistor module at the auto parts store. The resistor module is easy to fix, and most are inexpensive to replace. However, depending on your vehicle, cost can vary greatly, from $25 to over $250.

Blower motor modules are usually installed in the heater ductwork, usually under the dash or under the hood and near the blower motor. It’s placed in the ductwork near the fan for a reason: the fan’s air moving across the resistor helps keep it cool. Traditionally held in place by two or three small screws, or spring retaining clip, look for a square-shaped or rectangular component having a wiring harness containing several wires connected to it.

Replacing the blower motor resistor module

• Locate the module (refer to a service manual to locate yours if necessary).
• Disconnect the negative (-) battery cable.
• Carefully inspect and disconnect the wiring harness.
  • Simes notes, “Check that the wiring close. Many (defective blower motor resistor modules) will have burned up wiring to the resistor. Some resistors come with (a) new wiring (harness) and should be installed exactly the way the manufacturer recommends.”
• Remove the module’s mounting screws or release the spring retaining clip.
• Slide the module out of the duct.
• Check the ducts to see if there is anything blocking air from flowing over the resistor.
• Clean wire harness terminals if corroded, and clean away the old mounting gasket (if there is one).
• Reverse the procedure to install the module.
• Reconnect the battery cable.
• Test fan operation and your car heater blower motor will be back in business.

PRO TIPS:

• Depending on the working space around the blower motor resistor module, it may be easier to remove and install the new module with the wire harness attached.
• Now would be the perfect time to replace the cabin air filter.

Kirkpatrick says “improper air flow across this resistor” from dirt or debris in the heater duct, a missing resistor module mounting gasket, damaged heater blower motor fan cage or “a (shorted) blower motor drawing too many amps would also cause premature resistor failure.”

If the blower motor resistor module shows corrosion or the wire harness shows signs of damage, discoloration or melting from a blower motor drawing too much current (Amps), it may be time to replace the blower motor or see the pros to diagnose the problem.

Even if you have a heavy-duty, fused, Digital Volt Ohm Meter (DVOM), the current draw of a bad heater blower motor will exceed the DVOMs usual 10-amp fused protection limit. DVOMs are a great tool to keep in your toolbox when doing electrical work in your home or car. There are dozens to choose from, from heavy-duty type.

How We Tested the Ryobi String Trimmer

Im testing many string trimmers and comparing them against the same criteria. The first thing I consider is the packaging, assembly, and instructions to get started. I started the battery charging while I assembled and read and noted that the battery took close to three hours to charge, which is something to keep in mind if youre eager to get trimming.

The bump head was already loaded with string, but I needed to attach it to the power head. I struggled a bit with this seemingly simple task as I had trouble getting the lower shaft to slide into the upper shaft. I managed to get it to attach, but then it went too far into the upper shaft, and you may already be guessing that I struggled to pull it outand yes, of course, it came all the way out. My next attempt was successful, and the quick couple system only required a half turn to lock it into placea nice update to Ryobis older attachments, which relied on winding and hand tightening.

The battery was easy to attach, but as I was attaching it, I noticed it felt quite heavy and wondered if it was my imagination. I headed to the scale, and it weighed in at just under 3 pounds, which seemed innocuous until I weighed a few more 4-amp-hour batteries, and they came in at 1 and 1.5 pounds. Please note that the battery is a bit heavy.

I started trimming and tackling weeds growing through the paver cracks and around tree stumps. The power was ample, and while the 0.80 string broke easily against the pavement (not unexpected), the trimmer chewed through the weeds and grass with ease. The deflector did not block a good amount of the grit and grass, but Ive never met a string trimmer that doesnt leave my shins coated in dirt and weeds.

Turning the tool to the edge was awkward but doable, and the straight shaft was well-balanced. I experimented here with the variable speed trigger since I like to move a little slower when edging, and it helped with my aim, as Im a bit of a zig zagger with a string trimmer. The brushless motor had the familiar scratchy noise and was a tad louder than some cordless string trimmers, but the battery still showed a 75% charge after approximately 20 minutes of use.

For my final act, a string change was in order, and my history with spooling string trimmers is not marked as successful. Having used many Ryobi string trimmers over the years, I knew the drill using their loading tool. The great thing about their method is that it works! You slide about 10 inches of string through the center of the bump head without worrying about direction, multiple layers of spooling or remembering how to re-attach the head and wind with the provided tool.

With that successful winding experience, I must caution users based on my previous experiences. The winding tool does not attach or stay with the trimmer, so you need to know where the tool is in your garage or shed. If you cant find it, then you are not going to be able to re-string your trimmer until you buy a replacement or figure out a clever way to wind the head. I now keep mine tied to the handle.

The noise level was slightly louder than my Ego trimmer, but not by much. The cost of ownership is a little less than that of other cordless string trimmers.

I’ve used all of the methods and tools discussed in this article, and they’ve each gotten me out of a tight spot more than once. Ahead find tips and how-to steps to cut a screw with help from Paul Ricalde from Paul’s Toolbox and Chris Bernacki from WnC Home Remodeling.

Should You Cut a Screw?

In most cases, it’s okay to cut screws, but you have to be careful not to damage it. Machine screws, which have tightly spaced threads, are at more risk of damage than the widely spaced threads of a wood screw. However, there are ways to minimize this risk or re-establish threads (more on this later).

It is safe to cut a screw to length in non-structural applications, especially during a time-sensitive project. It might even be necessary if your project requires a custom-length screw outside of standard lengths.

Avoid cutting structural screws or lag bolts shorter, as this can reduce load-bearing capacity. A shorter screw means fewer threads to bite into the material and more weight distributed over a shorter span. “Cutting also generates heat, which can weaken a screw or bolt,” Ricalde says.

How To Cut a Screw

While the steps to cut a screw will vary depending on the tool, all steps begin and end the same. First, mark your cut line on the screw with a permanent marker. When finished cutting, use sandpaper or a file to smooth down any rough edges.

Here are some more things to keep in mind as you narrow down what method you’re going to use:

• Always wear protective glasses and gloves when cutting a screw, and hearing protection with power tools. If using a rotary tool, angle grinder or oscillating saw, work away from open flames or flammable products, as these tools can generate sparks.
• Use a vise or pliers to hold a screw in place when cutting. This is safer and ensures an accurate cut. “If I’m cutting a tiny screw, I’ll use pliers to hold it,” Ricalde says, “Something larger, I’ll put it in a vise, so it doesn’t move.”
• Always cut screws using blades intended to cut metal. Bernacki likes Diebold carbide blades.
• Before cutting a machine screw, Ricalde suggests twisting a nut onto the screw above the cut line. “Then cut it where you want it and reverse it to get the threads right again,” he says.

With a rotary tool

For fast, accurate results, I like to use my rotary tool to cut screws to length. It’s Ricalde’s first choice as well.

With the tool at a high operating speed, press the cutting wheel into the screw at the cut line. Use enough pressure to keep the blade against the screw. Use two hands to hold the blade steady until cutting is complete.

With wire strippers

This method only works with machine screws. Wire strippers often have various-sized cutting holes for several common machine screw diameters. Thread the screw into the correct-sized cutting hole, then squeeze the hand grips closed until the screw is cut. “These provide a nice, clean cut every time,” Bernacki says.

With an oscillating saw

With the saw running, bring the blade to the screw. Hold the tool with both hands to maintain control, as oscillating tools can skip side to side when cutting. Keep light pressure, allowing the blade to do the work. Maintain contact between the screw and the blade until cutting is complete.

With a reciprocating saw

Depress the trigger on the saw to initiate blade movement. Apply moderate pressure to the tool while cutting, letting the blade’s back-and-forth motion do most of the work.

With a hacksaw

Place the blade against the screw at the marked line and move the saw back and forth while applying pressure. Continue this motion until the screw is cut.

With bolt cutters

Place the screw between the bolt cutter blades at the cut line. Squeeze the tool hand grips together with increasing pressure until the screw is cut.

With cutting pliers

Place the screw between the tool blades at the cut line. Squeeze the tool handles together, applying increasing pressure until the screw is cut.

With an angle grinder

Turn on the tool, then apply light pressure against the screw with the blade until the cutting is complete.

How to cut a screw sticking out of wood

Sometimes cutting is the only way to remove a screw that is bent or stripped and partially screwed into a surface. I like to use an oscillating tool, or multi-tool, in this scenario because it cuts the screw flush with the wood. “The nice thing about a multi tool is it doesn’t mar the wood when you’re making a cut,” Bernacki says.

Follow the steps for cutting a screw with an oscillating tool above, but keep the blade as close to the wood as possible.

HowWe TestedIt

First, I looked at the packaging and assembly. This tool arrived in a single box and required no assembly. The instructions are printed on the tool,so there was no need to read directions. So, I headed to the yard to get weeding.

I located clumps of crabgrass since it was easy to identify where the roots originated. I centered the four claws over the weed, pressed down on the extremely handy large foot lever and the serrated claws easily sank into the soil. Using the cane-shaped handle, I tilted the tool back against the lever and heard one of the most satisfying sounds one could hearthe sound of roots being pulled completely free. I was so satisfied with my feat that I examined the root system up close before easily sliding the handle to release the weed.

I carried on with the crabgrass patch and was able to clear about two square feet in a couple of minutes. Then, I headed into the yard to ensure the claws could dig through the turf. Again, the claws went right through the tough ground with very little pressure being applied to the foot lever and the weed was easily ejected, thanks to the extractor enclosing all four claws.

After weeding, I checked the claws for damage, and there was none. In fact, the claws’ design indicates that they will stay sharp and capable for a very long time. I washed the dirt off, and the tool still looked brand new.

Another noticeable aspect of the Fiskars weeder is its weight. Its plastic components make it lighter than tools that use all steel construction, and the plastic will not rust.

Of note among stand-up weeders that use a mechanical action (as opposed to gravity) to release the weed is the Fiskars handle-mounted release. After years of pulling, spraying and cursing the weeds on my property, I’ve finally switched to burning weeds with propane and could not be happier with my decision. Ahead, learn all about weed torches with pro tips from Poshusta and Tim Thompson from YouTube’s Farm Learning with Tim Thompson.

What Is a Weed Torch?

A weed torch consists of a long wand with a handle on one end and a burner cylinder head on the other. The wand is connected to a liquid propane source and ignites at the burner head. This generates an intense, concentrated heat that is then directed at weeds, killing green growth.

Weed torches come in different styles for various applications. There are single-head torches meant for smaller jobs and multi-head set-ups for large agricultural fields. Wands can have straight or curved handles. Poshusta finds curved wands more comfortable to use.

How much does a weed torch cost?

Expect to pay between $30 to $250 for a residential weed torch. Small torches that produce lower temperatures will fall on the lower end of the price range, while larger torches with a full-size propane tank and mobility system will cost much more.

Does Torching Weeds Work?

Yes, burning weeds with propane can be part of an effective management plan. The torches easily kill the green growth on weeds, but sometimes leave the root system intact. Hardier perennial and woody weeds can regrow from undisturbed root systems. “Repeated applications are necessary,” Thompson says, “but eventually, the roots will become depleted and die due to continued heat treatment.”

Weed torches are most effective at quickly killing annual weeds two to three inches tall. “Torching is most effective on small weeds with small roots,” Poshusta says. “So frequent, low-intensity application will give the best results.”

Is it Safe to Burn Weeds?

Yes, but certain precautions should be taken.

Weed torches can reach temperatures of 2000 to 2250 degrees Fahrenheit. To prevent burns, always face the torch head away from you when lighting and using it. “Be aware of the direction of the flame when using the torch, and remember that the tip will remain hot for a period of time after use,” Thompson says. Always wear long pants, a long-sleeved shirt, gloves and close-toed shoes during use.

To avoid inadvertently starting a fire, don’t torch weeds during dry conditions or on a windy day. Always have a water source ready to extinguish any unwanted flames. Consider torching weeds after a soaking rain to avoid sparking a brush fire. “Make sure there are no burn bans active in your location and take precautions to avoid unintended fire spread,” Poshusta says.

How to Use a Weed Torch

Using a weed torch is relatively simple, but be sure to follow all manufacturer instructions carefully.

• With all valves closed, connect the torch to the propane tank and slowly open the tank valve. Slightly open the torch valve and use a flint spark igniter to ignite the gas at the burner head. Adjust the flame size with the control knob on the torch.
• Direct the burner head toward the weeds you’d like to remove, remaining 4 to 6 in. above the ground. Apply heat in a sweeping motion across the plants until they begin to wilt, then move on to the next area. “You don’t have to completely incinerate the leaves. Simply wilting them down is often sufficient,” Poshusta says.
• Move slowly across the area, applying heat to all visible weeds. “The woodier the weeds, the slower you need to go,” Thompson says. To make it easier to use with larger propane tanks, use a tank cart to move the setup around your yard as you go.

Weed Torch Pros and Cons

Pros

A propane torch is a fast, low-effort method to get rid of weed without the use of chemicals and herbicides. “The big two advantages of heat torches are the instant results (you can literally look back at yellowing weeds as you work) and the lack of toxic chemicals,” Thompson says.

Without the presence of chemicals or residue, once burned off, neighboring beneficial plants can quickly replace unwanted weeds. This method also avoids damaging nearby plants with herbicide overspray.

“[Weed torches] are particularly useful around patios, sidewalks and other hardscape or gravel surfaces since these don’t burn,” Poshusta says. Weeds that sprout in cracks and driveways are notoriously difficult to pull can also be easily managed with a propane torch.

Cons

While a great tool for managing weeds, burning weeds with propane can cause fires if not used correctly or in overly dry, windy conditions. “You need to be careful not to use it on fire danger days,” Thompson says.

While fast and effective, killing weeds for good with a propane torch often takes several treatments.

Additionally, Poshusta points out that while this method avoids using chemical herbicides, it does require burning fossil fuel. “It also doesn’t work well when weeds are in close proximity to other plants you want to keep,” he says.

When you need to drill a hole wider than an inch in diameter or so, a hole saw is the right tool for the job. However, hole saws have a well-deserved reputation for being no fun to use. If the prospect of using one conjures memories of an ice pack on your wrist and the smell of burning wood, relax and read on.

There are a variety of hole saw kits on the market that can cost anywhere from $20 to $300, depending on the size, quality, and type of teeth (bi-metal, carbide, diamond, etc.; bi-metal teeth are sufficient for most tasks)the hole saws have. If you cant afford to buy the whole kit at once, dont worry. Most manufacturers sell individual hole saws and arbors. Build your kit one saw at a time as needed, sticking with one brand so you can use the dedicated arbor for new hole saws. A cheap kit might seem like a great deal, but you get what you pay for. The hole saw teeth dull very quickly and the saws are often shallow, limiting the thickness of the material you can drill through. Go for a higher-quality option if you can.

A hole saw proved to be the perfect solution when I purchased a door without a pre-drilled door knob hole. So, let’s walk through the step-by-step process of properly using a hole saw to cut through wood.

What is a hole saw?

To use a hole saw, you need two pieces. First are the hole saws, which are the “saw blades” and come in various sizes and configurations of cutting teeth. The second is the arbor, also called a mandrel, which mounts the hole saw on a drill or drill press. Each hole saw and arbor differs slightly depending on the manufacturer, but most of them contain the following components:

Slots – Hole saws have two to four slots along their vertical walls. These straight or slanted slots help remove debris and sawdust while cutting and provide a space to insert a screwdriver to remove a cutout plug that is caught inside the hole saw.

Cutting teeth – Hole saws can have a single cutting tooth or a number of cutting teeth, varying in size and shape depending on the material they are intended to cut.

Pilot bit – Hole saw arbors have a removable pilot drill bit that serves as a center point for guiding the hole saw. The drill bits are generally secured to the arbor by set screws and should be adjusted to extend at least 3/8 of an inch past the bottom of the hole saws cutting teeth when in use.

Drive pins – Drive pins are designed to improve stability and carry most of the torque load applied to the hole saw so that the arbor’s threads are not overtightened onto it. Depending on the arbor manufacturer, drive pins are adjusted and utilized differently, but should always be used, especially with larger hole saws and denser materials.

Arbor shaft – Arbor shafts are hexagonal pieces of the arbor that are inserted and tightened into drill or drill press chucks.

Secure the workpiece

Before starting, ensure the door or whatever you will be cutting is secured down in a vice or with woodworking clamps to prevent it from spinning. Dont skip this step; Ive regretted not doing this, especially if you are cutting into something small.

Ranger is a brand of side-by-side off-road vehicles that look like a pick-up truck, but are closer to the size of a golf cart. They have power steering, gas and brake pedals, gear shift, and bench seating in the cab, a reinforced front bumper and grille, and a large truck bed that can be tilted up with a simple latch system.

The Ranger XP 1000 NorthStar is equipped with a closed cab thats decked out with heating and air conditioning, a plethora of cup holders and storage, a console with GPS and trail maps, and built-in speakers that can connect to your phone. Closed Cab

One of the best aspects of this UTV is the completely enclosed cab. Riding around in the NorthStar on a Texas ranch meant a lot, and I mean a lot, of kicked-up dirt, dust, mud and water, which would have been pretty miserable without the closed cab and filtered air system.

In addition to clean air, you can also adjust the Polaris NorthStars temperature with heating and air conditioning. The former was a lifesaver in the Texas heat and the latter will make early morning snow removal a much more enjoyable experience. If you want to appreciate some good weather or coordinate with someone outside the vehicle, you can always roll down the windows. The ultimate NorthStar has power windows while the premium has crank windows. For even more flexibility, the ultimate NorthStar has a tip-out windshield thatll make you feel like youre in an open cab.

I also really appreciate the thoughtfulness of the cabs design. The bench seats and rear-hinged doors allow for easy in and out, which is really handy when working on a project. Plus, the LED headlights switch is conveniently located to the left of the steering wheel so you can quickly illuminate what youre working on, even when youre out of the UTV.

Included Tech

The ultimate edition of the Ranger XP 1000 NorthStar comes standard with some pretty cool electronics, the first being a 7-inch touchscreen display with Ride Command. This free program is an integrated GPS system where you can load existing trails, map new trails, view and communicate with other Polaris vehicles or snowmobiles, utilize a backup camera and, of course, see drive information like the speed, gas level and direction. To take things to the next level, you can add a Ride Command+ subscription that provides vehicle maintenance and diagnostic information so your ride stays in tip-top shape.

Also included with the ultimate edition is an all-new sound system backed up by JBL speakers. I can attest that these speakers sound great and are loud. Youll have no trouble hearing the radio or streaming music while riding or working outside the UTV. You can connect your phone via Bluetooth to sync with Ride Command to listen to music and get texts and calls, or plug in your phone with the USB port when youre low on battery.

Power and Durability

A big selling point for the 2025 Polaris Ranger line is the upgraded front end. The redesigned front bumper and grille are larger and more durable than previous iterations, for improved performance and appearance. Attached to the front end is a heavy-duty winch with a synthetic rope and auto-stop feature that will make light work of downed trees, loading items onto a trailer or pulling yourself or another vehicle out of a stuck spot.

With an 82-horsepower engine and new Gen 2 transmission, the Polaris Ranger XP 1000s shift easily between gears and can reach up to 60 miles per hour. When paired with the units three throttle control modes (performance, standard, work) you can expect to power over rough terrain and steep slopes, and have more acceleration control.

The NorthStar ultimate and premium are now equipped with 29-inch wheels and four-wheel, two-wheel and one-wheel drive, the latter of which can be used to preserve wet grass or other fragile ground from being torn up while you work. The larger wheels and 14-inch ground clearance mean you can stay dry when driving through flooded fields or low waterways.

Versatility and Add-Ons

There are almost endless uses for the Polaris Ranger NorthStar. The large cargo box can hold up to a thousand pounds and has a simple lever latch that allows you to tip the box up. This is incredibly helpful when moving heavy rocks, transporting and laying mulch, or planting trees and other large plants around your property.

The cargo box also has corrugated sides and bed to securely hold storage containers and tool boxes or partition the bed into separate sections. Additionally, hitch a trailer to the back and use the 2,500 pound towing capacity to move heavy equipment, lawn tools, decking or even a light boat.

Like there are many ways to upgrade a utility trailer, there are a ton of add-ons and accessories available for the Ranger NorthStar line. From storage racks and bed extenders to hydraulic lifts, generators and covers, Polaris has all the gear you can imagine on their website and Amazon. Two of my favorite add-ons are the snow plow and trash can hauler which turn cumbersome chores into a fun (and productive!) ride. If youre not quite sure which accessories would work best for you, Polaris offers six packages that filter down common tools and add-ons for large properties, farm work, hunting, trail riding and winter prep.

How We Tested It

I got the chance to test out the Ranger XP 1000 NorthStar premium and ultimate vehicles at a ranch in Texas. I drove the premium NorthStar (the unit without a dash display and speakers) for about five hours and the ultimate (with those features) for about an hour and a half, mostly off-road. This included rocky ground, dusty trails, low waterways and up and down steep slopes. Heres what I thought.

Ride Performance

Starting to ride this side-by-side couldnt have been easier. After hopping into the UTV, I just turned the key, pushed the gear shift and started driving. I started off on a dusty dirt road, and can this thing move. Though the top speed is 60 miles per hour, even going half that made me feel like I was flying. This would be incredibly convenient for those with especially large properties to move around in a flash.

Once I switched over to off-trail riding, the strength of the Ranger NorthStar really shined. Despite being met with rocky earth that verged on boulders, the vehicle in four-wheel drive powered through without missing a beat. I was actually pretty impressed with how smooth the ride was, given the uneven terrain. Dont get me wrong, there were certainly bumps, but I never felt jolted or overly jostled, likely because of the larger tires and dual a-arm suspension.

When I was met with steep up or downward slopes, I tried out the performance and work throttles. When engaged, these modes definitely gave the UTV more power and control when moving up and down steep hills. Rather than sliding down or back a big decline/incline, the Ranger gripped the road and moved evenly, even when moving slowly.

Speaking of grip, I also drove the side-by-side through a few flooded spots on the trail as well as a flooded road. Though the water was about a foot deep, the vehicle had no problem driving through the water. It should be noted that even with the large tires, high clearance and sealed suspension, if you drive through water higher than the clearance, you will get a bit of moisture in the floor of the cab. Thats fairly high, though, and I didnt experience any water issues during my drive.

Something that I particularly enjoyed about riding these Rangers was the improved powered steering. The vehicle was incredibly easy to navigate, and even surprisingly nimble with a 160-inch turning radius. I could definitely see these side-by-sides being incredibly useful in cleaning up and maintaining a large home property.

Comfort

When it comes to creature comforts, it doesnt get much better than the Ranger XP 1000 NorthStar. When I first saw the bench seats and small, glass-mounted headrests, I was a bit nervous about how my body would feel after a few hours of driving. My fears were unfounded though, and I was pleasantly surprised at how comfortable I was. If youre planning on riding around all day, every day, I could see you wanting to add more lumbar support or an extra seat cushion (our favorite seat cushion is in this list of the best car accessories), but more casual users will be perfectly content with the bench alone. The steering wheel can be tilted front and back, so it can be adjusted for drivers of different heights and sizes.

One of the best parts of this vehicle is the closed cab and climate control. As I mentioned, I drove the side-by-side off-road in Texas, which meant very hot and dusty rides. The HVAC system kept about 99% of the debris out (I had just a touch of dirt around my sunglass line and in my nostrils after several hours of driving). The air conditioning was an actual lifesaver. Even though it was only mid-April, it was extremely hot and sunny out and the air conditioning in the cab worked quickly and consistently to keep me cool. I can only imagine how great the heating element would be in the winter months, especially if you have to do some early morning plowing.

For the time I was able to drive the ultimate model, I made full use of the JBL speaker system and display screen. Using Bluetooth, my iPhone connected with little effort and I cranked the tunes. My music could be easily heard over the rumble of the engine and clearly heard outside the cab when the doors were open. When it comes to the touchscreen display, my favorite part was seeing the other Rangers in my group driving the trail through Ride Command. If you have multiple Polaris vehicles on a farm or together for an off-roading trip, making sure everyone is accounted for is a huge safety plus.

For those who are only interested in owning one Ranger NorthStar, I understand going with the paired-down premium version, without the display and sound system. This was the model I drove the most and it was great. Its certainly more utilitarian and cheaper (the premium Ranger NorthStar is five grand less than the ultimate) but I will say I did miss the additional tech of the ultimate after switching back to the premium. Theres just something about riding around with the music blasting!

Usability

The 2025 line has all the functionality and versatility of the Rangers previous iterations, plus a few bells and whistles. On the front of the side-by-side is a new front bumper and grille that will protect the front of the cab (and, well, you) from bumps and hits while driving as well as when pulling something on the winch. The winch itself is built into the UTV with a synthetic rope to resist fraying and a handy auto-stop thatll keep the end of the rope from being rolled into the winch. Plus, the winch is remote-controlled, so you can pull or release items from a safe distance.

At the back of the Ranger, the bed can be titled up with a lever near the middle of the vehicle. I was surprised how easily the bed lifted once unlatched, thanks to the added hydraulics. This means moving and dumping rocks, dirt, feed or sand are much more manageable tasks than if you had a wheelbarrow alone. Also, if you add a winch to the top of the cab, you can pull large logs or game hands-free into the bed, which will totally save your back. Once tiled up, you can get a good look at the upgraded ProStar engine and can perform routine maintenance as needed.

As I mentioned before, the bed of the truck has grooves along the bottom and up the sides to more securely hold storage bins, tool boxes and coolers. You can also partition the bed with a couple of boards as dividers. Additionally, there are round and rectangular holes all along the top of the walls where you can install storage or tool racks, mounts, a bed extender or flag pole, the options are extensive. An example of how thoughtful the design of this side-by-side is the inclusion of four cupholder spots on the tailgate so you can keep your beverage close as you work outside the vehicle.

These UTVs are closed cabs that seat 3 with same horsepower, ground clearance, box capacity, towing capacity and wheel drive options, and both have a dump bed, rear camera, tilt windshield with wipers, LED headlights and lots of add-on options. The Defender and Ranger are also similar in overall size. The base Cam-Am Defender costs $29,899 and the base Polaris NorthStar ultimate is $32,999 (the premium version comes in at $27,999).

While both UTVs have a display screen, the Polaris NorthStars is much more sophisticated. For one, its a large touchscreen that can display GPS coordinates and directions, driving information and control the music. The Defenders display, on the other hand, is a rectangle above the steering wheel that only displays driving information. Similarly, the Defender’s HVAC control is a single knob for the temperature and fan levels, whereas the NorthStar has separate knobs and a defrost switch.

The Defender does not come with a sound system standard, like the Ranger NorthStar ultimate does, but one can be added when building your vehicle for an additional $930-1,120.

If the upgraded tech isnt enough to sway you to the Polaris NorthStar, Id recommend testing each of these vehicles out for yourself at a local dealership. They are so close in specs and price, your personal ride experience and needs are even more important.

If you’re embarking on a concrete project, here’s how to set yourself up for success with cutting concrete.

What Tools Do You Need for Cutting Concrete?

To cut concrete, people commonly use a handheld circular saw and diamond-bit blade, but you can also use:

• A masonry table saw, which makes it easier for beginners to make straight or mitered cuts;
• An angle grinder, for small and detailed projects like thin veneer and pavers; and
• A chainsaw for larger projects.
• A demolition or cut-off saw for cutting concrete slabs or pavers.

Some saws are classified as wet saws, which require a water source. They are great for helping to keep dust down, especially indoors where there is less ventilation. The downside is that they are less maneuverable. Whichever saw you use, you will also need a diamond-bit blade.

What Type of Saw Blades Do You Need for Cutting Concrete?

Diamond-tipped blades are required for cutting concrete. Choose a blade hardness that matches the material you’re cutting.

“If it’s relatively soft, coarse concrete such as that [is] found in wall block, you want a blade that won’t wear down quickly,” says Jeremy Martin of Willow Gates Landscaping. “If you’re cutting hard, dense concrete with a finer aggregate such as concrete pavers or some natural stone, you need a blade that will wear down faster to expose fresh diamonds to continue cutting.”

How To Cut Concrete

If you are concrete saw-cutting concrete:

• Prep the area by clearing it of debris, especially metals that could get caught in the blade.
• Adjust the saw for the desired depth of the cut.
• Mark the lines you want to cut using chalk, a marker, paint or a grease pen. “Make sure to mark these spots completely and clearly to prevent missing them when concrete dust goes everywhere,” says Brandon Walker, superintendent at ASAP Restoration.
• Put on safety gear, including eye and ear protection. Wear a respirator to prevent inhaling dust. A protective suit can also help you avoid getting covered in dust and debris.
• If you’re making wet cuts, keep a consistent water supply running, preventing the saw blade from overheating, binding or warping. For dry cutting, let the blade cool down every 30 to 45 seconds.
• Before placing the blade on the concrete, let it get up to speed, then lower it onto the surface slowly to prevent it from binding.
• As you cut, keep your blade squared up with the line of your mark.
• Once you’ve finished your cut line, release the trigger and let the blade spin down inside the cut before removing it from the cutting area.
• Clean up the dust. “Vacuums are best for cleaning up concrete dust because they prevent spreading and aeration caused by brooms while sweeping,” says Walker.

Also, whenever possible, bring the saw to the work area rather than carrying the product to the saw, says Martin. “Paving and wall materials are heavy, and it’s physically demanding to move them to the saw and back to where they will be installed.”

Cutting Different Types of Concrete

If you’re cutting a curve, Martin recommends forming your line using pex, hose or fiberglass tent poles. “When cutting wall block, a handheld saw may not cut the whole way through a block,” says Martin. “In this situation, mark the block, then cut as far as the saw blade will reach. Then flip the block, and cut the remainder.”

Dos and Don’ts for Cutting Concrete

When cutting concrete, always:

• Wear safety gear, including hearing, eye and respiratory protection.
• Check the condition of your blade.
• Choose the correct type of blade for the concrete you are cutting.
• Clean up wet slurry before it dries. If it dries, removing it could cause damage to surfaces.
• Actively control dust.

“Unless it’s a very shortcut, dust control is essential,” says Martin. “Cutting generates a lot of dust, some of which is harmful respirable crystalline silica.”

Most saws have a built-in water attachment that will control the dust by wetting it, and some have built-in vacuums like those from IQ Power. Another option is a central dust collector such as those offered by Dust Killer Tools.

“Using a vacuum for dust control will result in a much cleaner job site, without a huge cloud of dust drifting over the work area, neighboring homes and cars,” says Martin.

Some mistakes to avoid include:

• Using a wet blade without using water, which will damage it.
• Cutting concrete in confined spaces without proper ventilation.
• Using dull blades, which will lower the quality of the cut.
• Forcing the blade. If it isn’t cutting properly, instead make multiple shallower passes.
• Cutting through objects embedded in the concrete, like rebar and electrical wires.
• Pulling the saw out of the cut before the blade has spun down.
• Attempting to use water for dust control with a non-designated wet saw (this creates a risk for electrical shock).

“Poor planning is also a common issue when dealing with slab cutting,” says Walker. “Measure everything until you are positive that it’s right, then triple check again. You can only make the cut once, and with concrete it isn’t easy to fix mistakes.”

When to Hire a Pro

If you are unsure of your ability, or if it feels dangerous, then call a pro. You might also hire a pro if you have to do major cuts or are unsure about crossing over plumbing and electrical lines.

“Saving money by doing things the DIY way is great, but not if it comes at the cost of an insurance claim for water damage when you cut through a pipe, or a blackout when you slice the electrical line,” says Walker.

How long do diamond blades last for cutting concrete?

They can last anywhere from about 10 hours to 100 hours, depending on the manufacturer, technique, surface material and torque of the saw. “If doing a significant amount of cutting, spend at least $100 to $175 on a good blade,” says Martin. “They are well worth the investment!”

Is cutting concrete difficult?

Yes. “Not only is it physically tasking work, which involves heavy equipment and materials, but it is also dirty and dangerous too,” says Walker.

Can you rent tools for cutting concrete?

Yes. You can rent concrete saw-cutting tools from most home improvement box stores, as well as tool rental companies. “The rental cost may vary from $50 to $1,000 depending on your project size and the number of tools, you may require,” says licensed contractor Jay Sanders.

How long does it take to cut concrete?

How long it takes to cut concrete depends on the length and depth of the cut, the quality of the saw and your experience level. “Smaller projects can be accomplished within a few minutes, whereas larger ones might require several hours,” says Sanders. “If you cut through a 4-inch thick concrete slab, using a professional-grade saw, it may demand approximately 45 minutes to one hour.”

Should you wear a mask when cutting concrete?

Yes, definitely. You should wear, at minimum, an N95 respirator mask, plus use other dust control methods such as water or a vacuum.

“Silica dust is a real danger, and it should be feared just as much as people do with mold or asbestos because it can cause serious health problems when not respected,” says Walker.

What Are Ladder Stabilizers?

Ladder stabilizers mount on extension ladders and are essential for working around windows, eaves and high walls when painting, siding or doing any exterior repair work.

Also called a “stand-off,” a ladder stabilizer has wide tubular arms and non-skid rubber pads that grip a house wall, increasing both a ladder’s stability and your reach working aloft. Stabilizers mount on all types of extension ladders, allowing them to straddle wide windows or standoff farther from a house to reach deep eaves while providing a rock-steady workstation. When to Use Ladder Stabilizers

Although ladders are the No. 1 tool for helping you work up high, their narrow, 16- to 20-in. stance sometimes limits their ability to position you properly and safely for tackling these tricky tasks:

• Accessing all sides of a wide window. With a stabilizer, you position the ladder only once to efficiently reach all areas around the window.

• Painting the rake board of a wide overhang. A stabilizer allows you to see and reach the work from a more comfortable position.

• Working around a deep soffit to hang a gutter. If the ladder rests against the house, you have to bend back too far to work on the fascia. If it leans against the fascia, the ladder interferes with placing the gutter.

Renting scaffolding can solve most access problems. But youll save a lot of money and setup time by renting or buying a ladder stabilizer instead.

Be aware of overhead power lines. You could be electrocuted if you touch them with your ladder or stabilizer.

Types of Ladder Stabilizers

Stabilizers can be divided into two groups: fixed-depth and adjustable. Before renting or buying either type, verify that its intended for use with your aluminum or fiberglass ladder.

Fixed depth ladder stabilizers

To install a fixed-depth stabilizer, slide it over your ladders rungs and lock it in position with the safety clip. A typical model spans about 45 inches and holds the ladder 10 inches away from the house wall. It has a load capacity of 300 lbs. and is sold at home centers.

Adjustable ladder stabilizers

Adjustable stabilizers are the most versatile. Attach this type to your ladders side rails with U-bolts. It, too, has a 300 lb. load capacity and quickly converts from variable widths of 49 inches to 65 inches (at a 12-inch depth) to a narrower width of 48 inches (but at a 29-inch depth). You can get one at a rental center or from home centers and large hardware stores.

Ladder Stabilizer Safety

Apply this ironclad rule: When installing a stabilizer, position it so it will be between the house and the ladder. Be sure to also follow these other rules:

• Dont use the type of stabilizers shown here on most folding (also called articulated) ladders. Use only the manufacturers recommended stabilizer for the model and duty rating of folding ladders.
• If necessary, enlist a helper to raise the ladder (with stabilizer) into position, especially around power lines and trees.
• Dont stand on the stabilizer.
• Stabilizers arent load-rated to carry the additional weight of ladder jacks and walk planks hung from the ladders. Also, dont use the stabilizer arms to support planks.
• Working aloft using old joint compound buckets to carry tools and materials is wonderfully efficient. For maximum safety, limit the weight of the filled bucket so the total load (including your weight) doesnt exceed the capacity of either the ladder or the stabilizer. Tie a rope to the bucket, climb the ladder, haul the bucket up and tie it to the ladder rails, not the arms of the stabilizer. Stabilizers can give you an increased sense of security aloft, but know your limits! Avoid a mistake caused by overconfidencelike overreaching to get an additional 6 in. closer to a spotthat could lead to tragedy.

What is the Oneida Dust Deputy?

When sawdust enters a cyclone separator, it spins around the funnel until heavy wood chips fall into the collection bin while the fine dust makes its way up to the vacuum filterso the filter works better and longer. The Dust Deputy isn’t a vacuum, and there is no motor. You run a cyclonic dust separator between a tool (like a table saw) and your shop vac. It’s installed between the intake hose and the shop vac or dust collector.

Why add a cyclonic separator to your shop? The biggest reason is that it turns a single-stage dust collector into a two-stage one. With a one-stage system, all the dust and debris runs over the impellers, through the filter and into the collection bag. The impeller gets a lot of wear, and the filter fills up quickly and needs to be cleaned more often.

With a two-stage system, the cyclone separates the dust before it reaches the impeller so only the fine dust goes through the impeller, saving wear on the impeller and filter. The motor lasts longer, too, because the separator filters out larger debris (basically everything except dust particles) so it doesn’t pass through the collector. If you’ve heard that loud “clunk” when a chip hits your expensive impeller, you know that dreaded feeling.

How I Tested the Dust Deputy

I have had a Dust Deputy in my shop for over a year, so I’ve been able to use it repeatedly. I can count on it to perform as expected while it extends the life of my dust collector and shop vac. Standard wet/dry vacs rely on small filters that quickly become clogged with dust and debris. Each time you try to clean the filter by tapping or washing it, the fine fiber construction of the filter becomes damaged.

I first used the Dust Deputy to mill lumber, helping control all the sawdust a planer and jointer generate. And don’t even get me started on the table saw!

I also used the Dust Deputy with my shop vac to improve its performance. I eventually upgraded all my filters to HEPA filters, which are more expensive to replace. They are also ultra-delicate. Have you ever sucked up a stray screw with your shop vac? You don’t want that rattling around in your expensive HEPA filter.

Although I still need to clean and replace filters and collection bags occasionally, it’s much less often with the help of the Dust Deputy.

Assembly was straightforward. When putting the components together, don’t use a power drill, as the threads on the inside are plastic and could strip if you use a drill. Attaching the Dust Deputy to the tool and vacuum was simple. The inlet side connects to your tool, and the top hose goes to the shop vac.

There are different types of Dust Deputy cyclone separators. I chose a model under $100 that fit my shop size and needs. A great way to find out which version is best for your shop is to use theproduct selector toolon the Oneida Air Systems website. It will ask what machine you use most for shop cleanup (a shop vac or dust collector) andwhat material you’re collecting (non-abrasive dust like wood and drywall or abrasive dust like sand and gravel). It also asks if you have size constraints, if it needs to fit under a workbench or if there’s plenty of space to go.

Something I learned that wasn’t in the manual is tomake surethe sawdust level in the collection bin stays lower than halfway, or you’ll start to see wood chunks make their way up to the shop vac or dust collector. There must be plenty of room for air to circulate inside the bin.

The lid is pop-on and off, so I learned quickly not to pick it up by the cyclone. While I’d like to carry the Dust Deputy and shop vac together on a cart, I have yet to make one, so my Dust Deputy sits under mymiter saw stationwith the hose clipped in place with theseclamps.

I was pleased to discover that the Dust Deputy is compatible with any make/model machine in my shop. It comes with tapered ports that fit standard 1.5-inch to 2.5-inch hose fittings. It also works with most materials: Wood dust, drywall dust, concrete dust, water, baking flour, grass, pet hairjust to name a few.

I chose the Dust Deputy over making a DIY version because making my own was more fuss than it was worth. The Oneida system comes with a collapse-proof bucket that won’t fold under high vacuum pressure, and the anti-static components significantly reduce the likelihood of static shocks. Replacing the handle of a shovel or yard tool is one of those projects you dont consider ’til you have a broken handle in your hand. Ugh! I never thought of replacing a shovel handle until I walked past the assortment of handles at the hardware store and realized I had a shovel I needed to replace the handle for.

Next time your shovel handle breaks, you’ll have a choice. You can either spend $50 (or more) to replace the tool or spend $20 to buy a new handle and replace it yourself. In addition to cost savings, it is a very satisfying fix. So let’s do this!

Remove the shovel rivets

Secure the shovel head collar and handle in a vise or with clamps. Holding the shovel collar and handle in place with clamps or vise will make this process easier and safer. Never do this fix holding the shovel in your hands alone.

Tap out the rivet/pin cap with a cold chisel (for metal). The goal is to create space to get the head of the rivet to protrude enough to access and easily cut off. Using an angle grinder or a handheld metal hack saw, cut the head of the rivet/pin off. Clear what remains of the rivet/pin out of the hole in the handle and shovel collar. You may have to use a 3/16-in. metal punch or a nail set to force out the rivet/pin.

If you have two rivets/pins in your shovel, repeat the same process to get the handle fully released. Some handles may have a nail or screws driven in from both sides. Either way, a cold chisel will help you pull them out, and you may not need an angle grinder to cut the head.
