Window Spirits

High-tech gadgets can make a big impact on your outdoor display. A Halloween projector kit creates the illusion that ghosts are inside your house! It comes with a screen, projector, and a scary DVD that plays on loop. The results are disturbingly realistic, as seen here in this example from @historicholmanhouse. You can choose from other DVD options like spiders, skeletons and zombies.

Haunted Portraits

Watch as @nesti.studio makes haunted Halloween portraits using thrift store frames and LED lights. Find or print your own creepy portrait paintings, then attach the artwork to MDF boards cut to fit the frames. Drill holes at the eyeballs, then secure LED bulbs at each eyehole. There you go—haunted portraits with sinister light-up eyes! Color-changing lights work great to create different effects.

Spooky Storm Clouds

Welcome trick-or-treaters with these ominous DIY storm clouds by @budgetdiymom. To start, she attaches butcher paper and color-changing LED string lights to the ceiling of her front entrance. The “clouds” are made of Poly-fil (used to stuff pillows); she secures the fluffy fiber to the paper with a hot glue gun. The LED lights flash and change colors to look like lightening behind the eerie storm clouds.

Magic Cauldron

This DIY self-stirring cauldron from @sunrisevalleyfarm.co was made for a Harry Potter party, but it works perfectly as witch’s brew for Halloween. The secret to the magic is a rotating motor hidden inside the cauldron that makes the stick stir on its own. Build multiple cauldrons to create the illusion that a whole coven of ghostly witches are cooking up poisonous potions.

Haunted Mirror

An old mirror, spray foam, and a couple of skeletons are all you need to create this haunted mirror project by @abby_roadhome. Use the spray foam to make a creepy, bulging frame; then stick various skeleton parts into the foam. In this case, a large skeleton torso hangs over the top, and skeletal hands are placed on either side. Finish with lighted candles that reflect in the mirror for a ghostly glow.

@brandon.hardy.art Replying to @Rachel Wolf I strung some of my Chicken Wire Ghosts up in the trees – the wind makes them dance! #Halloween #HalloweenDIY #ChickenWireGhost #Ghost #Dance #Spooky #Boo #Decor #HalloweenDecor ♬ A Forgotten Waltz from Out of the Ether – Brandon Hardy

Chicken Wire Ghosts

These floating ghosts made from chicken wire by @brandon.hardy.art are not only scary, but surprisingly elegant. The human shapes are made by molding the chicken wire around real people, then attaching the pieces together to create silhouettes. When hung from a tree and lit with outdoor lighting, they gently sway in the breeze to look like they’re dancing through the afterlife. You can find the full tutorial here.

Foggy Graveyard

A front yard graveyard is not a new idea, but a few key details will elevate the display to look more haunted. Shown here by @partycity/video, the tombstones are just the beginning. Add in spider webs, creepy fabric, skeletons, bones, and spooky lighting to make your graveyard come alive. The most important element is a fog machine. The fog swirls around each piece and mixes with the light for a haunting effect.

The arched frame is made with PVC pipe; then spider webs, mesh, string lights, and other decorations fill in the tunnel walls. The most important element is the projector screen that plays scary animations along as visitors walk through the tunnel.

Strobe Light Skeleton

A skeleton or ghost displayed in a window is a fun Halloween decoration; but here’s an idea from @thehesterstyle to crank up the creepy factor. Place a full size skeleton in the center of the window (add a black cloak to make him a little more sinister) then light the skeleton with a sound-activated strobe light. The skeleton then lights up when the spooky music comes to a crescendo.

Creepy Mask Ghosts

Here’s how @thenavagepatch decorated his haunted graveyard with not-so-friendly ghosts. Start with a creepy white mask, then attach long and tattered cheese cloth to create the ghost shape. Glue a battery-operated LED light inside the mask to light it up at night. Hang the masks with fishing line so they look like they’re floating in midair.
