Removable Cover

This topper has a GOTS-certified organic cotton cover with a hidden underside zipper. It can be removed, though the brand recommends spot cleaning only. If your cover starts looking shabby, you can purchase a replacement.

Flippable

Avocado recommends rotating and fluffing the mattress topper on a regular basis to help retain its loft. It can also be flipped.

How We Tested It

Our tester,Spencer Kildare, is a side sleeper who appreciates extra support and pressure relief. Especially since he’s been sleeping on the same spring mattress for 16 years. My mattress is very old and worn in. Its probably not the best to sleep on, but I have gotten accustomed to it, he explains. My sleep quality isnt the best, and I sometimes feel like Im 60% to 90% rested.

In hopes of improving his sleep quality, Spencer ordered the 3-inch Talalay latex topper. It costs between $45 and $72 more depending on the size, but it is softer and more plush than the Dunlop latex used in the 2-inch topper. The plush Talalay topper is designed to contour and alleviate shoulder and hip pain, making it ideal for side and combination sleepers like Spencer.

TheAvocado mattress topper arrived in a single box that Kildare could lift and move on his own. The topper itself was folded and wrapped in plastic. According to Kildare, it took a grand total of three minutes to get this mattress topper out of the box and centered on his bed. He did notice a factory smell, which he said was reminiscent of vanilla cake. He notes that the smell isnt bad, but the topper needs a week or more to completely off-gas.

Spencer tested a handful of mattress toppers over the course of several weeks. The Avocado mattress topper was the final topper he tested and it stood out among the rest. “It was the most different, in terms of construction, that I slept on,” he says. “It really has a cakey sort of feel and it mushes when pressure is applied. It provided excellent support to my sides without applying excess pressure.”

After sleeping on this mattress topper for five nights and a handful of mid-day naps, Spencer found that he loved the overall quality and spongey nature of the foam filling. His sleep quality drastically improved and he found himself waking up fully rested more often than not.

Though Spencer gave this topper five stars for comfort and support, he wishes it had corner straps to keep it from moving around on his bed. Straps! Somebody get this mattress topper some straps, he quips. This is a great topper, but those straps are important. Rather than corner straps, this topper relies on well-fitted sheets to keep it in place. Treat yourself to a set of Boll & Branch sheets to keep this topper in place.

Overall, Kildare recommends the Avocado mattress topper to anyone who tends to wake up feeling stiff or sore. It starts at just $199, and given its comfort and quality, your only regret will be that you didn’t buy it sooner.

We’ve spent countless hours testing some of the best mattresses on the market from brands like Helix, Saatva and Purple. We’ve also tested the best mattress protectors, sheets and toppers. After thoroughly researching the best mattress toppers, we sent the Avocado mattress topper to Spencer Kildare for testing. He put this topper on his 16-year-old mattress and slept on it for five consecutive nights along with a handful of afternoon naps.

During that time, he focused on its overall comfort and performance. He also considered how easy it was to unpack and place on the bed, whether or not it had any odors and its overall value. This is a mattress topper of excellent quality, he concludes. The soft cover of the topper adds to the spongey nature of the foam filling, and the covering is the most cloth-like of the bunch.

4 Interior Design Trends For 2025 Classic Elegance Gettyimages 522915858

Classic Elegance

Classic elegance is the first of the interior design trends for 2025 that Fishburne identifies. “This timeless trend emphasizes high-quality, classic decor that feels like a lasting investment and will transcend time,” Fishburne begins. She explains that classic elegance focuses on personal style rather than rapidly changing trends. Homeowners who embrace this often opt for “pieces that reflect their taste by modernizing artisanal and handcrafted pieces with a new color or finish.”

She also notes that “formal dining rooms are making a comeback, aligning with the rise of broken floor plans and the desire for spaces dedicated to family connection.”

If you want to embrace this in your home, Fishburne recommends opting for “warmer, bolder colors that balance the minimalism of the 2010s, or try color drenching a monochromatic approach.” She also suggests “rich textures, tactile fabrics and durable materials like warm or dark complex stones mixed with wood finishes complete the look, growing more beautiful with time.”

Inflatables, inflatables, inflatables! Have you noticed how inflatables seem to be a part of holiday decor every season? Big ones, small ones. Halloween, Christmas, cartoon characters, fantastical! They are not cheap, and truth be told, the biggest challenge to having inflatables in your front yard is they are fragile. Some inflatables are even delicate. The question is, after investing in decorative inflatables, how do you take care of them to ensure your investment lasts for more than one season?

Most inflatable yard decorations are made from durable, waterproof nylon or other synthetic materials so they can resist rain. However, the true secret to having your inflatable around for more than one season is how you take care of it when it is up and how you store it during the off-season.

Here are a few tips to protect your inflatable investment and ensure the fun lasts more than one season.

Before you use your inflatable

  • Read the directions and follow the manufacturer’s recommendations for exposure to extreme temperatures and moisture, such as snow, ice or rain.
  • Location, location! Choose a flat, clean area far away from Christmas trees and other sharp objects to display your inflatable.
  • Check for tears and rips at the start of each new season. Small holes will prevent the inflatable from properly filling, and over time, small holes will become bigger holes.
  • Everything has a limit. Follow recommended weight limits, restrictions and recommendations.

A DIYers Guide to Making Kokedama Masterpieces https://www.familyhandyman.com/project/kokedama/ Tue, 19 Nov 2024 18:44:36 +0000 https://www.familyhandyman.com/?post_type=project&p=644194 Get to know the essential techniques on how to make a kokedama and add a touch of zen to your home's decor.

The post A DIYers Guide to Making Kokedama Masterpieces appeared first on Family Handyman.

]]>

For plant enthusiasts, Kokedama offers a creative and visually appealing way to incorporate greenery into your home. Kokedama is a unique houseplant trend that focuses on how you plant and display your leafy companions. Rather than using pots, Kokedama involves wrapping the plant’s root system in a moss-covered soil ball, resulting in a natural and visually striking presentation.

This method allows you to easily add a touch of living, thriving vegetation to any space in an artistic, unconventional manner. Embracing the Kokedama style can be an excellent way to bring more vibrancy and life into your living environment through the display of your beloved houseplants.

What Is a Kokedama?

Kokedama bares its roots in Japan and is a many centuries old garden art. Most recently, the concept of Kokedama gardening has come into popularity in the west. Known for its beauty, kokedama literally means “moss ball” in Japanese. It is also known as Poor Man’s Bonsai or String Garden as most Kokedama gardens seem to float in the air when they are hung with transparent fishing line.

The curious thing about Kokedama is the learning curve lies in making your first one. Once you figure out the dirt mix and how to form your ball shape, it can become addictive because you want to have more and more. Find the right combination of water and light and you will find successful Kokedamas can live for years. Here are some tips and trick to starting you very own indoor Kokedama garden.

Mix the soil

Mix together one part bonsai soil, one part peat moss, and half part potting soil.

These soil ingredients combine to create good drainage and aeration, which is crucial to prevent root rot, support excellent moisture retention, and allow roots to stay moist between waterings. They are also lightweight and sturdy, which makes them easy to hang.

Add small amounts of water as you go and combine to a thickness where the soil clumps together. You will know your dirt soil mix is to the right consistency when you press it in to your hand and it stays together in a tight shape. Press and form a dirt ball five to six inches in diameter.

The post If Your Walls Feel Naked After the Holidays, Try This Easy Joanna Gaines Hack appeared first on Family Handyman.

]]>
You can always count on Joanna Gaines for easy DIY holiday home decor hacks. So, if you’re someone who loves specific holiday decorations over the more broad seasonal options, fear not. You won’t have to settle for bare walls in the interim between the winter holidays and Valentine’s Day.

Joanna Gaines Post-Holiday Decor Hack

Gaines posted a video of herself putting a large tree branch in a vase to add some decor to the walls. It’s a cheap and easy way to create a statement piece along a wall and prevent your home from feeling bare while you wait for the next decoration-heavy holiday to roll around.

Gaines elaborated a bit on the hack in her caption, including some advice on what NOT to do: “If your home feels a little naked after the holidays, cut a branch and stick it in a vase. Don’t screw it in the wall like I did though. That’s a little too far.”

This hack is perfect if you gravitate toward nature-inspired decor and flowers. It essentially takes that idea one step further and elevates it from some florals in a small vase to an eye-catching statement piece that fills up an otherwise empty wall.

Recreate the Hack at Home

If it’s legal and safe to do so, you can cut and collect a branch from outside. Ideally, you’ve got your own trees that you can pull from, but if you don’t, you can try asking one of your neighbors for a branch instead. This is the cheapest and easiest way to achieve the look.

Gaines picked a branch that still had plenty of leaves on it to really make the piece feel as full as possible. Depending on your climate, you might have to go for an evergreen tree branch or a similar type of tree that still carries its leaves in colder weather. If you live somewhere warm, you’ve probably got many more options available to you.

Either way, ensure the branch you pick fits into your choice of vase. Gaines uses a wide-necked metallic vase in her video. It’s shaped almost like a wine decanter, but it’s still open enough to accommodate the branch she selected. Be sure that your branch isn’t too top-heavy; Gaines screwed hers into the wall but says that you likely won’t need to do that for yours; just keep weight and proportions in mind as you recreate her hack.

Bring The Outdoors In with Artificial Turf https://www.familyhandyman.com/article/bring-the-outdoors-in-with-artificial-turf/ Wed, 30 Oct 2024 14:26:19 +0000 https://www.familyhandyman.com/?p=644533 From play rooms to indoor putting greens, find out how to use artificial turf inside your home.

The post Bring The Outdoors In with Artificial Turf appeared first on Family Handyman.

]]>
If you’ve ever been to an indoor football or soccer arena, you’ve probably seen artificial turf in action. The fake, maintenance-free grass looks like the real thing; but without the need of sun, water or mowing. But using artificial turf indoors goes beyond professional sports. Artificial grass is a fun material to experiment with in your own home as an accent material, flooring option, or wall covering. We spoke to Blerta Morina, an expert in indoor and outdoor construction products, to guide us on how to use this unique product for your indoor DIY projects.

What Is Artificial Turf?

Artificial turf is a man-made material designed to look and feel like real grass. The green plastic blades (most commonly made with nylon, polypropylene, or polyethylene) are woven through a permeable backing system that allows drainage (important when used outdoors). Infill material acts as the “soil” providing weight and traction, and it comes in a variety of options, including rubber, cork and coconut.

There are a wide range of quality and price points when it comes to artificial turf. From the extremely high-end products used in professional sports arenas, to mid-range and affordable options available at home improvement stores. For DIY home project purposes, artificial turf will cost anywhere from $2 to $20 per square foot.

Why Use Artificial Turf Indoors?

Like artificial plants, artificial turf is a way to bring the outdoors in only without worrying about maintenance, watering or sunlight, so your grass is always greener! It looks great in home gyms, kids spaces, or even used as unique wall decor.

“The best type of artificial turf for indoor spaces is typically polyethylene,” says Morina. “It’s soft to the touch, durable enough for high traffic, and looks natural without feeling too harsh underfoot.”

Installation is fairly simple, similar to laying carpet. “Make sure the surface is clean and flat, then roll out the turf. Adhesive is optional, but if you’re covering walls or furniture, staples or screws will do the trick,” says Morina.

Tips for Using Artificial Turf Indoors

So where and how should you use artificial turf indoors throughout your home? From small scale applications to entire rooms, it’s a fun material to use creatively. Here are a few of our favorite ways to incorporate it into different room designs.

Indoor Garden

The most obvious use for indoor grass is to pair it with other plants, whether they’re living or artificial. “For plant lovers, imagine using it as the base for an indoor garden or herb corner,” says Morina,”It not only defines the space but also adds a lush, green backdrop that makes your plants stand out even more. Plus, it helps keep things neat when watering and tending to your plants.”

Indoor Putting Green

@yunicgolf Transform Your Home into a Putting Paradise: Master Your Golf Game Indoors! #homegolf #puttinggreen #practicemakesperfect Truth Is – Julia Cole

Artificial turf is a dream for golf-lovers! “Artificial turf transforms a spare room into an indoor putting green, allowing you to practice your short game whenever you likerain or shine. It’s also a fun way to bring the family together or entertain friends,” says Morina.

Wall Decor

@daylinsfunhouse Transformed the formal dinning room into a formal chill room. #roommakeover #roomdecor #roomtransformation #grasswall #ledlights #roomtour #vibes She Share Story (for Vlog) –

A vertical garden makes a big impact in any room, but the installation and care can be complicated and time-consuming. Instead, use artificial turf as a wall covering to make “living” art.

“Whether it’s in a family room, home office, or even a patio area, a green wall adds texture and a sense of nature indoors. Pair it with some hanging lights or faux ivy, and you’ve got a cool, nature-inspired feature wall that feels fresh and unique,” says Morina.

Kids’ Space

Kids love playing on soft, green grassso why not bring it inside? Artificial turf used in a kids’ room or play room means they can enjoy grass year-round.

“Synthetic grass can turn a playroom into a mini outdoor adventure zonewithout ever stepping outside,” says Morina, “It’s soft, durable, and adds a playful energy to the room. You can cover the entire floor or just lay down a few grass rugs for accent.”

Modern Furniture Materials and Open Floor Plans Are Making House Fires Worse https://www.familyhandyman.com/article/fire-safety-furniture-synthetic-materials/ Sat, 26 Oct 2024 07:04:22 +0000 https://www.familyhandyman.com/?p=644678 From drapes to couch cushions, synthetic materials are fueling hotter fires that burn much faster.

The post Modern Furniture Materials and Open Floor Plans Are Making House Fires Worse appeared first on Family Handyman.

]]>
If you’re in the market for a new couch or a kitchen table, you might want to take a closer look at what it’s made of before buying it. Manufacturers are using more plastics and other petroleum-based products to produce much of the cheaper, lighter furniture available these days, and those can make fires burn faster and more intensely, leading fire experts to sound the alarm.

Firefighters in Las Vegas, Nevada, echoed that warning this week in the wake of a deadly house fire that killed four people. Despite responding within five minutes of receiving the call, the fire department was unable to get through the front door because of the heat, according to a report from KSNV News in Las Vegas.

“It’s not unheard of for a fire to go that quickly, an official with the fire department told the local news. Fires, especially in modern homes, with modern finishes, that burn very hot.

Rather than natural fabrics, much upholstery found on furniture today is polyester fabric covering up cushions made of polyurethane foam. Lighter and cheaper tables, bookcases, television stands, etc. are often made from synthetic materials, too. And you’ll find plenty of other plastics, resins and other synthetic materials in everything from picture frames to electronics. Together, these materials make fires move much faster and burn as much as eight times hotter than in homes just a generation ago.

In addition to intensifying the heat from a fire and burning faster, those synthetic materials create more smoke than natural materials and contain toxic carcinogens. Smoke builds up faster as these materials burn, and the chemicals it contains stick around long after the flames have been extinguished.

In 2020, the Fire Safety Research Institute conducted an updated demonstration of just how quick and intense house fires can be because of these materials, an updated version of the test conducted by the FSRI in 2009. The FSRI did a side-by-side comparison lighting two, equally-sized rooms with nearly a identical setup, except one room contained furnishings made primarily from synthetic materials and the other using furniture made from natural materials to demonstrate the flashover times for each one. (FSRI defines flashover as “the transition phase in the development of a room fire in which fuel surfaces, exposed to thermal radiation from fire gases in excess of 600 degrees C (approximately 1100 degrees F), reach ignition almost simultaneously and fire spreads rapidly through the space.”)

In five different tests, the room containing furnishing made with natural materials reached flashpoint in just under 30 minutes, versus less than five minutes for the room setup with synthetic furnishings. In one trial, the room with synthetic furnishings reached the flashpoint in three minutes and 20 seconds. You can see the video of the experiment below.

Another risk factor common in modern homes is the open floor plan. With fewer barriers between rooms, fires are less contained because they’re not compartmentalized. Flames and smoke spread much faster when they ignite in larger, open areas. It also makes it harder for firefighters to control the fire.

Fire Safety

Understandably, it’s hard to avoid synthetic materials in your home entirely, and going out and replacing all of your furnishings in one swoop isn’t realistic for most of us. But there are steps you can take to help keep you safe.

Smoke detectors: Firefighters and fire safety experts all stress the importance of having working smoke detectors throughout your home. At a minimum, you should have a smoke alarm on every level of your house. It’s also a good idea to have one in each bedroom and one in any hallways that sleeping areas open into. Be sure to test your smoke alarms regularly and change the batteries twice a year, unless it’s hardwired.

Escape plan: Make sure you have fire escape plan with well-defined escape routes. You may need to plan different escape paths for different bedrooms and parts of the home. And make sure everyone in the house knows the escape plan and understands what to do in case of an emergency.

Fire-protected furniture: If you are looking for new furniture, curtains, etc., read and understand the label. Look for natural materials or fire-protected furniture. You can also look for products made under the Upholstered Furniture Action Council (UFAC) program or that meet the requirements laid out by the California Bureau of Home Furnishings.

Avoid fire risks: Be aware of the fire hazards in your home and take steps to avoid them. That includes measures like turning off space heaters when you’re not in the room with them and keeping them away from curtains, clothing, bedding, etc. Space heaters are one of the most common causes of house fires in the United States. You should also be aware of hazards like unprotected outlets and overloaded circuits, things than can cause electrical fires in your home.

At the ripe age of 27, I can confidently say I still appreciate cute and whimsical decor, bonus points if there are animals involved. Heck, I even have two large cast iron rats in both of my bathrooms that I lovingly refer to as my toilet paper rats (a roll fits perfectly on each tail).

With that in mind, it should be no shock that I’m all aboard the trend of decorating for Christmas with woodland animals. And I’m certainly not the only one. Popular brands like West Elm, Pottery Barn, Arhaus and Target are all getting in on the fun. Here’s some of my favorite woodland creature Christmas decor to spark joy this holiday season. Happy shopping!

Help! My Neighbor’s Holiday Decorations Are Out of Control https://www.familyhandyman.com/article/neighbor-holiday-decorations-out-of-control/ Fri, 11 Oct 2024 21:33:41 +0000 https://www.familyhandyman.com/?p=640162 Your neighbor's holiday decorations are festive and fun, but they're too big and far too loud. Is there anything you can do?

The post Help! My Neighbor’s Holiday Decorations Are Out of Control appeared first on Family Handyman.

]]>
Getting festive and decorating for the holidays is a cherished tradition, but once in a while, there’s a neighbor that goes way too far. If one of your neighbor’s holiday decorations is too noisy late at night or making the block appear bright as day at all hours of the night, it may be time to do something about it.

So, what’s the best way to get the problem fixed promptly? Here are some steps you can try.

Confirm the Rules and Regulations

Just because your neighbor’s decorations are inconvenient doesn’t necessarily mean they’re against the rules or breaking any laws. Go to your city’s website and check out the rules and regulations regarding quiet hours and bright lighting late at night. If you are part of a homeowner’s association, you’ll also want to check its rules and regulations.

Confirm You Aren’t the Problem

Before you complain about your neighbor’s decor, confirm that your own holiday decorations aren’t causing issues.

  • Make sure your lights and sounds turn off at or before city quiet hours.
  • Ensure your decorations don’t creep onto the sidewalk or your neighbors’ yards.

If your decorations are also out of control, it’ll damper any requests you make. You can’t ask your neighbor to tone down their decorations if you’ve also gone over the top.

You should also take a beat and consider whether your request is reasonable. Sit with it for a moment, and then go to a trusted friend who you know will be honest with you. Holiday decorations aren’t generally up for more than a few weeks, so if your neighbor isn’t in violation of any ordinances and the people around you don’t share your opinion about the extent of the problem, you may want to consider letting your neighbor’s annoying decorations slide to avoid creating tensions that could last year-round.

Have a Friendly Conversation

There’s no reason to rapidly escalate immediately, especially if your neighbor isn’t actually breaking any rules. They’re your neighbor, after all, and you don’t want to foster animosity that outlasts the holiday season.

Start by conversing with them without mentioning city rules or the HOA regulations. Explain that the lights are too bright late at night or their music is too loud, and it’s impacting your sleep schedule. If you’ve got a unique need (e.g., a new baby who isn’t sleeping well, a family member with epilepsy who can’t be near flashing lights, etc.), then gently explain that to your neighbor. If they see that your request is not a personal attack on them, they’re more likely to make the requested change.

Chances are, if your request is reasonable, your neighbor will be amenable to addressing it. This way, you’ve salvaged a decent, or at least amicable, relationship with them instead of starting an unpleasant conflict.

Inform Your Neighbor You’ll File a Complaint

If your neighbor is actually breaking the city or your HOA’s rules and they refuse to stop the violation, inform them of your intention to file a complaint. Just the threat of taking action may convince them to meet you in the middle.

File a Complaint

If all else fails, it’s time to take action. If you live in an HOA, the board will likely enforce decoration rules. Speak to them, and keep everything in writing so you have documentation just in case. Alternatively, you can call the city’s code enforcement to resolve the issue (find the number on your city’s official website).

Ideally, it wont come to this, and you and your neighbor can find common ground in the holiday spirit!

Best Way to Incorporate a Desk Into Your Living Area https://www.familyhandyman.com/article/how-to-incorporate-a-desk-into-your-living-room-area/ Mon, 07 Oct 2024 18:45:53 +0000 https://www.familyhandyman.com/?p=638656 A dedicated workspace is a must when working from home. We asked the pros when having a desk in your living room is appropriate and how best to do it.

The post Best Way to Incorporate a Desk Into Your Living Area appeared first on Family Handyman.

]]>
Remote work is on the rise. If you don’t have a spare room to transform, you might be considering other small home office solutions. One option is to incorporate a desk into your living room.

We spoke to three interior designers to find out when desks in living rooms can work and their tips for keeping things cohesive, clutter-free and conducive to concentration.

Pros and Cons of Putting a Desk in the Living Room

Pros

Interior designer Malak Bellajdel explains that desks in living rooms can create a functional workspace without sacrificing an entire room. “This setup works well for apartments and smaller homes,” she says.

Interior designer Angie Kreller says a desk in a living room rather than a bedroom office could enhance your productivity. You won’t be so tempted to lie down and take a break when you shouldn’t, and it means your bedroom remains a relaxing retreat. Plus, you don’t have to worry about your unmade bed showing on work video calls.

Cons

Bellajdel says there are times when a desk in a living room isn’t ideal. “If a client has small children or pets that could make it difficult to maintain a professional workspace, I’d suggest they reconsider,” she says. “You also have to think about aesthetics. If a client has a very specific design vision for their living space, a desk could disrupt that visual flow.”

Interior designer Leslie Dapper isn’t a fan of desks in living rooms. “I found that not only can it become filled with paperwork and files, it’s not always conducive to productivity,” she says. “There are many opportunities for distractions, and when it’s time to relax and use your living room for its purpose, it becomes hard to distinguish between the two spaces.”

Tips on How to Put a Desk in the Living Room

If you’ve decided to put a desk in your living room, consider these factors to successfully combine style and functionality.

Pick the perfect position

Bellajdel recommends thinking about the flow of the space. “The desk shouldn’t be in the way of any pathways or create awkward corners,” she says. Tucking a desk into a nook or using the space under your stairs is a creative way to incorporate a home office without it interfering with the rest of the room.

You also need adequate room to position your workspace ergonomically. A cramped desk and office chair can lead to problems with posture.

If you subscribe to the calming and harmonious energy principles of Feng Shu for your home, avoid sitting at a desk that faces the wall with your back to a doorway. The ideal commanding position would be somewhere you can see the door, but not directly in line with it. When facing a wall is the only choice, try expanding your view with a mirror.

Create a cohesive design

Keller recommends ensuring the desk style complements the rest of your living room design. “You want the aesthetic you’re going for to be cohesive and look like it belongs,” she says. “This will make the desk look less like a workstation and more like a deliberate ‘accessory’ to the space.”

Good lighting is key

“Try to position your desk near a window,” Balleajdel says. “Natural light is great for productivity, and it also helps the desk area feel like a natural part of the room.”

However, you don’t necessarily want to have your seat directly in front of the window. Sometimes, looking outside can be a distraction and cause issues with glare and privacy.

Use storage wisely

“If the living room is meant to be a true relaxation zone, some people have a hard time unwinding when work materials are visible,” Bellajdel says. Integrating smart home office organization solutions like a desk with drawers or discreet baskets on overhead bookshelves keeps the space clear of clutter.

You don’t need to opt for a full desk setup

If you’re struggling to envisage how to incorporate a large desk into a compact living room or you don’t want to be reminded of work at the end of a long day, don’t worry. “So much of what we do in terms of work now can be done on a laptop, so a full desk setup can sometimes feel unnecessary,” Dapper says.

A discreet, adjustable-height standing desk for small spaces is easy to tuck away in a closet at the end of the working day. A fold-down wall-mounted desk platform is another practical alternative.

How to Install Modern House Numbers for Curb Appeal Flair https://www.familyhandyman.com/project/modern-house-numbers/ Thu, 03 Oct 2024 16:45:32 +0000 https://www.familyhandyman.com/?post_type=project&p=629438 Transform your home's entrance with this sleek project that shows you how to create a modern house numbers plaque with a vibrant flower box.

Every house has numbers so people and the post can find you. Have you noticed how many people DON’T give their house numbers a DIY creative consideration? Most are satisfied with the numbers the house had from the minute they walked in. For this project, I pondered how a set of numbers on the front of your home can set the stage for what lies beyond the door. From a technical perspective, I designed this project so all of you can say, I can do that! Still, from a design perspective, I want the modern house numbers to boost the curb appeal and speak to the people walking up the door for the first time with a “wow,” all while giving it a cool, modern vibe.

Where To Put House Numbers

Your house number should be displayed at eye level or higher in a location where they are easily visible from the road and free of obstructions, such as tree branches. It is recommended that you use contrasting colors or place them near a well-lit area so they are easily visible in low light conditions. Use bigger numbers the further away your home is from the road.

Project Overview

G2Flower box face trim3/4″ x 1-1/2″ x 7-1/2″

Overall dimensions: 41-1/2″H x 7-1/2″W x 8-1/4″D

Stain the trim

Stain the trim pieces for the panel and flower box (D, E, F, and G) in a contrasting darker color.

Set the stained pieces aside and allow them to dry while you proceed to the next step. Touch up any exposed ends after the number panel is put together and framed.

To avoid staining the natural-colored wood pieces (A, B, and C) with your fingerprints while you put the piece together, you MUST ensure the dark wood stain is dry before you start to handle it. Also, using oil-based stain will give your wood even more longevity when exposed to the elements.

Things to Consider When You Put a Bed in Front of a Window https://www.familyhandyman.com/article/bed-front-of-window/ Fri, 27 Sep 2024 16:21:28 +0000 https://www.familyhandyman.com/?p=637061 Placing a bed in front of a window can work if you use these creative design tips.

The post Things to Consider When You Put a Bed in Front of a Window appeared first on Family Handyman.

]]>
One of the most important decisions when planning a bedroom layout is where to put the bed. Although it’s not ideal, sometimes putting the bed in front of a window is your only choiceespecially in small or awkward spaces.

So, how do you make it look intentional instead of like a last resort? A few design tricks make a world of difference. For guidance, we spoke to architect and designer Matthew Coates. Check out his tips for how to place a bed in front of a window and still create a beautiful bedroom design.

Pros and Cons of Putting a Bed in Front of a Window

The advantage of putting a bed in front of a window is primarily to improve the function of the room. The window location might be the only way to make the layout flow correctly (like if the bed doesn’t fit on any of the other walls), but that doesn’t mean you’re left with a poor design. Coates says other benefits of a bed in front of a window include:

  • It can create a dramatic focal point, especially if the window has nice architectural details.
  • If done right, it can make the room feel balanced, even in trickier layouts.
  • The natural light coming from behind the bed can give the space a soft, airy feel during the day.

However, blocking a window is never the first choice. Here are the drawbacks to this layout, according to Coates:

  • Privacy can be a concern, depending on how much exposure the window has.
  • It can also make the room feel less cozy, especially if there are drafts or the window lets in too much light early in the morning.
  • Without the right styling, it can feel awkward or like the bed is blocking a key design feature.

Tips on How to Put a Bed in Front of a Window

Consider Your Options

The first tip for placing a bed in front of a window is to consider it as a layout solution. Most people never even consider placing their bed in front of the window because they imagine it will look bad. But by keeping your mind open, you may find this layout is actually the best choice.

“In my experience, placing a bed in front of a window can actually be a great solution when there aren’t many other options,” says Coates. “It also works well when the window offers a nice view or is large enough that it can frame the bed without overwhelming it.”

Avoid Bulky Window Treatments

Window treatments not only offer privacy (essential when your bed is nearby) but also can help visually balance the space to make the bed seem like it belongs there.

“For window treatments, I always recommend going with something that feels light and airy but still offers privacy and control over light,” says Coates. “Roman shades or floor-length curtains can both work really well here. I’d avoid anything too bulky that could compete with the bed and instead go for treatments that complement the overall style of the room.”

Choose the Right Headboard

A headboard that’s too tall will block the window view and limit natural light, while no headboard at all will look sloppy. Coates recommends a low headboard instead and, if you wish, an upholstered headboard, which adds to the coziness factor. “A headboard can help anchor the bed and give it a sense of purpose in front of the window. It creates that visual separation between the window and the bed, making the arrangement feel intentional rather than accidental,” says Coates.

Use Decor for Balance

How To Put A Bed In Front Of A Window Use Decor For Balance Courtesy Designsbymollyhannah Instagram

Ideally, the window behind the bed should be centered. “I usually recommend this layout when the window is higher or more centered on the wall, so you’re not completely blocking natural light or airflow,” says Coates.

However, if the bed is off-center, you can use decor to correct the unevenness. Hang curtains in a way that tricks the eye so the window looks centered, or use matching artwork on both sides of the window to add balance. You can even hang artwork directly on the window (as seen here from @designsbymollyhannah) for added interest. Matching nightstands and lamps flanking the bed will also help the bed location look centered and deliberate.

Make the Bed a Focal Point

@shannonrussointeriors Designing this room brought JOY to my work life! I have watched this little girl grow up for 4 years and getting to design her new room was so special! She is ALL GIRL so her room had to be a reflection of her favorite things! We fell in love with this incredible floral wallpaper that will be great even as she gets older. We drenched the room is pinks, mauves, purples, and mint green (some of her favorite colors)! And while she says she loves every aspect of her room, she admitted that her favorite part was a single unicorn throw pillow HAHA! Other details from the design include a performance pink and white striped rug, a custom mauve ached bed, and an end of bed purple sofa! On the other side of the room we built a reading corner with a pearl canopy and fuzzy bean bag chair, outfitted a desk with a pink chair and linen pin board, and added the coolest mint green bookshelf shaped like a doll house! I hope this sweet girl loves her room for many years to come! #girlsroommakeover #girlsroommakeover #girlsbedroomideas #girlsbedroomdecor #pinkbedroom #pinkbedroomdecor #kidsbedroom @LTK @Pottery Barn Kids @Rejuvenation @Visual Comfort @West Elm @Spoonflower @Joybird Furniture i just needed a holiday – amber | uk + travel

A window behind the bed can act like a giant headboard, framing the bed to create a focal point. Play up that aspect by choosing bold bedding and matching window treatments. Or create an entire accent wall with wallpaper. By combining the bed, window, and wall into one cohesive focal point, the eye won’t even notice that the bed is in front of a window and instead focus on the dramatic design elements.

How To Make Your Seasonal Decor Timeless

Bring the Outside Inside

One of Malina’s first tips to keep your seasonal decor timeless is to draw inspiration from nature. “Organic elements from your outdoor environment make for beautiful natural decor that can cross over from Thanksgiving all the way through the winter,” Malina explains.

If you’re struggling for inspiration, take some time to go for a walk or to a local park. Take note of the leaves, pine cones, and other pieces of nature. If it’s safe and legal to do so, Malina urges you to “gather some pine cones from the park into a decorative bowl on your coffee table, or pick up a shapely bare twig and place it in a ceramic vessel on your dresser.” If you want to make your decor holiday-specific, “you can even line up a couple of pine branches over a mantle or along a credenza.”

Do No-Drill Curtain Rod Brackets Actually Work? https://www.familyhandyman.com/article/no-drill-curtain-rod-brackets/ Thu, 19 Sep 2024 17:29:16 +0000 No-drill curtain rod hangers are easy to install, even easier to remove, and they don't leave a trace. But do they work? Two design experts weigh in.

The post Do No-Drill Curtain Rod Brackets Actually Work? appeared first on Family Handyman.

]]>
They look simple, but conventional curtain rods that attach to drywall can be surprisingly difficult to install correctly. Trust me on thisI’ve done this installation many times in clients’ houses and my own. No-drill curtain rod brackets are potentially a great labor-saving alternative, and they help avoid the need to patch holes in drywall when you change the window covering or move out of a rental property.

But do they actually work?

No problem there, says interior designer Jodi Peterman. “They are a great solution for lightweight to medium-weight curtains.” Real estate investor Robert Shepard agrees, but he cautions to choose wisely. Several different types are available, and they can’t all handle the same weight. And when it comes to super-heavy soundproofing or blackout curtains, you’re probably better off with conventional brackets.

Here’s a rundown of the types of no-drill curtain rod brackets available and when to use them.

What Are No-Drill Curtain Rod Brackets?

The name says it all. No-drill curtain rod brackets can support curtains without the help of fasteners driven into the drywall. “How do they do that?” you ask. Well, that depends on the type of brackets you choose.

Types of No-Drill Curtain Rod Brackets

Some no-drill curtain rod hangers hook onto the window casing or onto blinds already mounted in the window, some stick to the drywall or window casing and some are spring-loaded and anchor themselves to the inside of the window frame by tension.

Tap Brackets

These metal brackets fit around the corners of the window casing and have support pins that you tap into the casing with a hammer. For long windows, there’s a center bracket with pinned wings on either side.

The best-known (and maybe only) brand is Kwik-Hang. “They work with any wooden window frame that’s at least 1/2 inch wide and can hold up to 20 lbs, making them both sturdy and renter-friendly,” says Peterman.

  • How they work: You set the bracket in place on the corner or center of the window casing and tap the pins into the wood with a hammer. It’s simpleit takes just a few minutes. When it’s time to remove them, you simply pry them up with a screwdriver.

Self-Adhesive Hangers

These hangers are treated with a strong adhesive that instantly bonds to any flat surface. The most common brand is Command, but there are others. Shepherd says they can hold lightweight curtain rods and are “particularly popular among renters who want to avoid wall damage.”

  • How they work: Remove the backing from the hanger, set it on a clean, flat surface and press down, and the hanger remains in place until you remove it.

Magnetic Hangers

If you have metal windows or window casings, magnetic hangers may be just what you need. “They are extendable and can be adjusted to fit various window sizes,” says Shepherd.

  • How they work: Magnetic hangers attach themselves automatically to any metal surface, and the magnetic attraction is strong enough to support lightweight curtains.

Tension Rods

You’ve probably seen these used for shower curtains, and you may already be using them in your own bathroom. They also work to hang curtains in your windows.

  • How they work: Tension rods consist of two separate rods, one inserted inside the other and connected by a spring. When you adjust a tension rod to the proper length, you can compress it, fit it inside the window frame, and it will lock against the sides of the frame when you release it.

Mini-Blind Curtain Rods

If you have an existing mini-blind, you can install metal brackets on the header and hang curtains from there. Nono Brackets is a leading brand.

  • How they work: The metal brackets have a U-shaped clamp that affixes to the header of the blind. Once secured, you set the curtain rod in the brackets, and the curtain is supported by the blind.

No-Drill Curtain Rod Bracket Pros and Cons

Pros

  • Time-saving: Conventional curtain rod brackets in drywall can be installed in 30 minutes, but no-drill brackets usually take less than five minutes.
  • Labor-saving: No need to drill, locate wall studs or install screw anchors when you can’t find a stud.
  • Inexpensive: You shouldn’t have to pay more than about $20 for each curtain you want to hang.
  • Leave no trace: In most cases, you can remove no-drill curtain rods without having to patch the wall.

Cons

  • Limited strength: No-drill curtain rods generally can’t support heavy curtains. Tap brackets can support heavier curtains than the others, but they depend on the stability of the window casing.
  • Possibility of failure: Adhesive and magnetic rods, as well as tension rods, can fail over time, and the curtains can fall. In particular, adhesive hangers won’t hold well on rough surfaces, such as textured drywall.
  • Possible wall damage: When you remove adhesive brackets, they may pull off paint, and tension rods can make indentations in drywall-framed window frames.

Do No-Drill Curtain Rod Brackets Really Work?

Yes, they work, but Shepherd cautions that their effectiveness can vary based on the type of wall or window frame and the weight of the curtains. Tap brackets can support the most weight, but they only work if the window is framed with wood casing.

  • Pro tip: Because tap brackets attach directly to the casing, the curtains won’t be level if the casing isn’t level, and you’ll notice a difference in the gap between the bottom of the curtains and the floor.

Are No-Drill Curtain Rod Brackets Right for My Project?

As long as your curtains weigh less than 20 pounds and your windows have wood casing, tap brackets are a no-brainer. They’re easy to install and painless to remove. If your window has no casing but a blind, mini-blind curtain rod brackets are also a good alternative to fixed brackets. On a scale of 1 to 10, I’d give these options 9 or 10.

On the other hand, adhesive brackets and tension rods probably wouldn’t rate higher than 6 or 7. These hangers work, but they aren’t as reliable, and a good tug by one of your kids or pets could bring your curtains crashing down. When it’s time to remove them, the possibility of having to touch up the paint is about fifty-fifty if you aren’t really careful.

No-Drill Curtain Rod Bracket Tips & Tricks

  • Affix your window casing securely if you’re going to use tap brackets. If your curtains are on the heavy side, consider adding a few extra nails or, better yet, trim screws.
  • Check the level of the top window casing before using tap brackets. If the casing is tilted, shim up the bracket on the low side with cardboard to make the curtain rod level.
  • When using a tension rod on a window with a drywall frame, prevent dents by inserting small cardboard squares between the ends of the rod and the frame.
  • Before affixing adhesive brackets to a wall or window frame, clean the surface first with alcohol to remove oils and help the brackets adhere better.
  • Don’t use adhesive brackets on textured drywall. They adhere best to flat surfaces.

Back in the ’90s, maroon accent walls dominated interiorsand Rumors is the new and improved version of that color. It’s a deep ruby red that will add warmth and rich allure to a space, as Behr describes it.

How to Use It

“This color, in particular, feels luxurious and warm, which makes it a perfect color if you want to make a statement,” says Steele. “The best places to use it will be in the dining room, an office, or a library. When paired with gold or brass accents, the room will feel very sophisticated, even if decorated on a budget.”

AI Interior Design Apps That Actually Work https://www.familyhandyman.com/article/ai-interior-design/ Tue, 10 Sep 2024 20:24:37 +0000 https://www.familyhandyman.com/?p=634429 If you are adding a new chair to a room or planning an entire room redo, an interior design app can help visualize selections before you buy it.

The post AI Interior Design Apps That Actually Work appeared first on Family Handyman.

]]>
If you are considering decorating or remodeling a space in your home, AI interior design apps can help you make some of the toughest decisions, from choosing a piece of furniture to deciding whether you really want those navy blue kitchen cabinets. The technology available at your fingertips, along with smartphones and tablets, can guide you and provide ideas by visualizing items in an area of your home through virtual reality, 3D modeling, and space planning.

According to real estate professional Stefania Cardinali of The Corcoran Group in New York City, using an AI interior design app can be a solid start to your overall design plan. “It’s a great way to realize and understand what may or may not work in a space. It can give a homeowner a creative edge and vision that one may not possess,” Cardinali says, adding that the technology can also help avoid design pitfalls before they happen.

Chadwick Boyd, a Real Estate Professional in New York City, agrees that AI design apps are becoming a popular tool for homeowners to help visualize your selections before you commit to any purchases. “Using an interior design app gives homeowners easy access to visuals so they can see what is possible and hone in on what they really are drawn to,” says Boyd. “When our brains see something, it becomes more real and possible.”

Ahead is a list of the best AI interior design apps that can help you make your vision a reality in your home. But first, a few points to remember before getting started on your design plan:

  • Do your homework: Think of the technology provided as a guide. You still have some work to do before you begin any home project. Cardinali urges homeowners to do their homework about styles, finishes, furnishings, and other materials or “risk becoming overwhelmed by all the choices available.” Look around and get familiar with products and selections before you start having fun with the AI design apps.
  • Know your measurements: Many of the tools in these apps rely on you knowing the measurements and specifications of your space. Be ready with measurements, photos, and links to sites with items you are considering in your plan. You’ll get the most out of each design feature if you are prepared with all the information you need about the space you are designing.
  • Define your style: Look at photos on Pinterest, Instagram, and other social sites to get an idea of your “style.” Many sites will ask for a description to help launch a design plan, and if you aren’t sure of a design goal, scrolling through descriptions of “modern farmhouse,” “contemporary,” or “French country” can start to feel a bit overwhelming.
  • Expect a learning curve: AI is a new technology, and therefore, many aspects are just starting to be smoothed out in the way they are used and deliver results. Be ready and aware that you are going to run into issues. One app I used placed two end tables on top of each other in my room sketch because I had two listed in my design plan! Be ready for some things to not seem to make sense, and move on or come back to it. We are all learning!

RoomGPT

Roomgpt

RoomGPT offers a common AI prompt model and uses it to give semi-realistic renderings of your dream design. I found the free version simple to use with a quick upload of an image of my living room space. Select the type of room from a drop-down list of choices (i.e., a living room, bedroom, etc.), and design a style from a list of about 25 descriptions.

The system gave me two AI versions of a design for my living room, with the option to regenerate another option if the results didn’t suit my tastes.

User Experience

While RoomGPT is generally easy to use, you may want to take note that while RoomGPT provides visual guidance, you will need some knowledge of design descriptions and terms for matching items being considered to those pictured. Here’s where that homework on design language is helpful.

Cost

  • 1 free design generation
  • Must purchase credits for additional designs (credit packages range from $9 to $29 dollars for 30 to 200 designs)

Home Designs AI

Home Designs Ai

With over 75 design different style choices, HomeDesignsAI offers plenty of styles to motivate your dream plan. In just a few steps, I had a picture of my living room uploaded and ready to play with design options. The app is user-friendly and a perfect option for beginners first trying their hand at interior design.

User Experience

The images of my room were ready to go with just a few steps and I found the tools available for swap-ins and outs were simple drag & drop options that gave me images that were clear and colorful. Other apps I used seem to distort colors that appear too vivid when testing color choices. While the lack of advanced options might be frustrating for more experienced interior designers, this could appeal to beginners.

Cost

  • Free 1-week trial available
  • Subscriptions range from $27 to $29 monthly

DecorMatters

Decormatters

If you are looking for an app experience that makes you feel like you’re designing with friends, DecorMatters is the service for you. The app is a combination of useful information and design resources to bring design projects to life and a social platform.

I found DecorMatters’s library of furnishings to be extensive. You can upload your designs to community boards for feedback and join in conversations with other home design planners. I particularly liked the option to use the app’s AI technology to find quality brand-name furniture options from stores where I usually shop online and in person.

User Experience

Home decor enthusiasts with experience creating spaces in the home will be comfortable with the app’s AI technology and probably appreciate the opportunity to give feedback to other users. However, the renderings for colors, shades of paint color, and fabrics do not “read” realistically in the results. I found the shades of yellow for a chair I was considering for a color choice all looked the same.

Cost

  • Some features available for free
  • Premium memberships available in packages ranging from $9.99 weekly to $39.99 yearly

REimagine Home

Reimagine Home

REimagine Home is a great starting point for someone dabbling in using AI to help plan their decor. The app’s virtual staging and renovation tools can arrange furniture and other items in rooms and imagine architectural details like paint colors on walls and trim. Designs for ceilings and design elements and options for flooring materials are simple to arrange to help complete a general design picture.

User Experience

REimagine Home is user-friendly for new users and helpful if a user doesn’t have a clear plan for a design. However, the library of options for furniture and other items might seem limited for some pieces or accessories when trying to recreate a popular design trend like “coastal” or “industrial.”

Cost

  • 5 free design generations
  • Must purchase credits for additional designs (credit packages range from $13 for 30 credits monthly to $99 for 1,200 credits monthly)

Palazzo

Palazzo

You never know where design inspiration will come from. A discussion about tennis led me to the AI interior design app Palazzo.ai, which tennis champ Venus Williams co-founded.

The service has you start with a quiz to pinpoint your design preferences, and then you upload a picture of your room to experiment with ideas and color palettes, furniture layouts, lighting fixtures, and other architectural details.

Ease of Use

Palazzo has limited design options because it is a relatively new app, and the AI technology is still expanding. But the restrictions are exactly what made it appealing, since there’s no getting overwhelmed by endless lists of choices.

This is currently a standard design app for a limited selection of color palettes, furniture, fixtures, and materials. They say their goal is to continue to expand and offer more options for large-scale homeowner renovation.

Cost

  • Limited free design generations
  • Must purchase credits for additional designs (credit packages range from $5 for 20 credits to $75 for 500 credits)

FAQ

Will AI replace interior designers?

No, AI will not be replacing interior designers any time soon. “Nothing will replace the feel of real fabric, the actual effect of a patterned rug to the eye and a room or how paint colors actually look in a particular space,” says Boyd. “AI is a great tool for efficiency and seeing what is possible, yet homes are places for real people created by real people. Nothing will ever replace the human touch and connection.”

While acknowledging the appeal of AI, Cardinali agrees with Boyd. “It’s become a tricky tango for the majority of genuine creatives, designers, and professionals in every industry,” she says. “Third-party machinations are not a certain or tangible aid for the consumer. In this case, the results of the designers’ end work should not be confused with graphic art or software design and development.”

Cardinali notes that interior designers offer a more comprehensive skillset than AI technology can, basing their designs on far more nuanced factors than just making a room look stylish. “As a real estate professional,” she says, “I would definitely recommend professional and knowledgeable consultation or guidance, both large and small, depending on the scope of the renovation or redesign project or when there is a great deal to inspect, anticipate, comprehend, and consider behind the scenes.”

Are you ready to elevate your home decor and impress your guests with unique, handmade drink coasters? In this step-by-step project, we’ll explore how to make DIY coasters using two distinct materials: epoxy resin and cement. These materials offer a perfect blend of creativity and functionality.

We’ll start by diving into how to make resin coasters, showcasing epoxy’s versatility and vibrant potential. Then, we’ll switch gears to demonstrate how to make coasters with a more industrial chic vibe using cement. Both methods allow for endless customization and experimenting with colors and textures. By the end of this, you’ll have the skills to craft beautiful, durable coasters that not only protect your surfaces but also serve as conversation starters at your next gathering.

How To Make Resin Coasters

Measure and mix the epoxy

Plan to work in a dust-free environment. Make sure you have a designated area where you will leave your resin pieces to cure so that they will not be disturbed. Note the epoxy open time. That is the time from mixing until epoxy resin sets. The resin will stay sticky and tacky for at least 12 hours. Any small dust particles that land on your resin during this time will settle in it and be visible in your finished product. While curing, cover your resin with a plastic tarp to protect it from flying insects or dust particles.

In two separate clear mixing cups, measure out equal parts of epoxy resin and hardener.

Be sure that your resin mix has acclimated to room temperature before mixing. Warm up the resin by sitting it in a bucket of hot water for 15 minutes before mixing it to reduce air bubbles and make it easier to pour.

Use a popsicle stick or plastic knife to mix the two parts thoroughly, but not too aggressively, as it could create air bubbles in the resin. The resin will initially appear cloudy, but as you stir, it will become clearthis indicates that your epoxy resin has been combined well and is ready for use.

Glasswork Projects To Illuminate Your Home Glass Countertops

Glass Countertops

Glass countertops are a chic alternative to granite or stone. According to LeJeune, there are distinct benefits to upgrading your space with them:

  • Heat resistant. While laminate countertops might melt under a hot pot, glass counters can withstand the heat.
  • Glass countertops are not porous, so they do not soak up stains or smells. Bacteria and dirt also wipe up easily.
  • Long-lasting. Glass keeps its luster and looks as good as new even after years of use.

One downside is that if something heavy is dropped on the surface, it could crack and be costly to replace.

What to know

  • Countertop installation might be something you can do yourself. However, working with glass is trickier than with laminate or other types of countertops because the manufacturer needs exact measurements, and once it’s made, you cant adjust it. So make sure to check with your manufacturer what measurements are needed, and like Mom always said, measure twice.
  • When installing, the good news is that most glass tops are thick, meaning you can skip the underlayment and apply adhesive caulk directly to the top of the cabinet. (However, always check with the manufacturer for their tips on installation.)
When adhering the countertop to the cabinet, use painters tape to protect the front of the cabinet from dripping caulk.

Plants add a wonderful element to any living environment. Only recently did I start to consider growing plants in anything other than pots, on the floor or sitting on a side table near a window. I love my plants and wanted to find a creative way to incorporate them into an indoor space. As I researched ideas and options, I found living walls are all the rage and very much on trend.

The more I pondered making a living wall, the more I realized I have some specific things I want to incorporate into it. I want my living wall to be modular so I can change and rearrange it as my indoor plants grow. I want to water my living wall plants/pots in place, and I don’t want to pull out a ladder whenever I want to reach the top layer. I want my living wall to have a glowing essence. And I want to make my living wall big.

This means adding a drip system and accent lighting and truly filling up a wall space. This living wall combines functionality, visual stimulation and an easy DIY approach to making it a reality. The only secret is to have fun and feel free to make your own decisions to customize it your way.

* – One edge ripped at 30.
** – With 45 miters at each end.

Cut the cleats

Using a table saw, rip a few 1x4s at a 30-degree angle so the shorter face of the rip is 1-1/2-inches. This will be your frame cleats (M) and box cleats (D) that mimics the dimensions of the box slats (C). Then, rip the straight side of the offcut so that the long face is 1-in. This will be your wall cleat (E).

Best Overall

Ikea Havsta TV Unit

Pros:

  • Great value
  • Solid pine
  • Easy to assemble
  • Simple, clean design
  • Easy to clean

Cons:

  • Rolling element and track for shelf doors are plastic

Ikea furniture is known for being affordable and trendy (e.g., the Billy Bookcase). While some Ikea furniture requires intense assembly, this TV stand only took our Editor, Caroline Stanko, two hours to build alone. The instructions were easy to follow, and she only needed a screwdriver to assemble the whole thing. However, the boxes that arrived were heavy, so we recommend permitting Ikea delivery to drop the boxes off right at your doorstep (which is what Stanko did).

Ikea Havsta Tv Unit

The TV stand is made of solid pine that has been painted and coated in a thin acrylic lacquer. This piece is solid, unlike many other Ikea products made of particle board. Once assembled, Stanko found it very sturdy, and it didnt wobble at all. To clean it, simply use some water and a touch of dish soap or other gentle cleaner. Use Windex or a similar window cleaner to clean the glass doors.

The back of the unit is open if you want the shelves to hold your router/extension cord. You can hide cords by securing them outside the middle support piece. Since the back of the stand is partially open, you may also need to cover the cords so you don’t see them through the doors.

The stand has clean lines, and the shelves hold a lot, Stanko says. It might bother some people that you can see everything that is on the shelves, but that can be solved by utilizing bins on the shelves (or putting some sort of film on the doors). Stanko also says that the Havsta TV Stand is the perfect height for watching TV from the sofa, and the shelves hold a bunch of her candles, books and craft supplies.

Since this is solid pine, it is a great value, Stanko adds. It doesnt feel bulky, but it holds a large TV and a ton of stuff.

Boho Chic

To take her screened-in porch from basic to boho chic, @debvdesignsandhome added a colorful rug, textured pillows and natural accents to the chairs and light fixture. But the star of the show is the new ceiling! Using treated cedar wood planks, they created a concentric rectangular pattern.

What We Like About It: The plants and other natural textures, paired with cozy cushions and a rug, perfectly combine both outdoor and indoor living.

How To Make a Terrarium https://www.familyhandyman.com/project/how-to-make-a-terrarium/ Thu, 06 Jun 2024 17:21:33 +0000 https://www.familyhandyman.com/?post_type=project&p=609306 Transform an open or closed container into a lush, miniature garden by following our step-by-step instructions on how to make a terrarium.

Making a terrarium will bring you enjoyment and satisfaction. It is also about as close as you are going to get to a Zen DIY project.

There are two keys to making and maintaining a thriving DIY terrarium. The first key is in the choice of layers used to create nutrients and ensure drainage. This is all about filtration and healthy soil, promoting root growth, and preventing fungus and disease. The second key to a successful terrarium surrounds moisture and how you will capture it or let it evaporate via an open terrarium or a closed terrarium. The ultimate decision on what kind of terrarium you should create is based on your chosen plants. Some plants thrive in moisture, calling for a closed terrarium. Other plants, such as succulents and cactus, require an arid environment, calling for an open terrarium to truly make them happy.

Follow along as I share the step-by-step process and formula to a thriving green thumb. You can choose between an open terrarium or a closed terrarium.

How To Make A Terrarium

Overview of terrarium soil layers

Overview Of Terrarium Soil Layer

Select the proper terrarium container

For a closed terrarium
Choose a container with a lid that will capture moisture and hold enough soil and drainage layers to support the growth of your plants.

For an open terrarium
Choose a container with an open top that can hold enough layers to support the growth of your plants. Keep in mind that you will want to reach in with your hand or small gardening tools. Therefore, it will be easier to plant and maintain a vessel with a wider mouth than a narrow neck. It is doable but much more challenging to plant, maintain, and troubleshoot a vessel with a small opening.

What Is Dopamine Décor and Should You Use It In Your Home? https://www.familyhandyman.com/article/dopamine-decor/ Fri, 10 May 2024 17:47:07 +0000 Here's how to bring the joy back to decorating your home with dopamine decor.

The post What Is Dopamine Décor and Should You Use It In Your Home? appeared first on Family Handyman.

]]>
Think back to your childhood bedroom, teen space or even your college dorm. Most likely those spaces were full of color, funky accessories and yes, probably a poster of your favorite celebrity or band tacked up on the wall. Dopamine decor is an interior design style that allows you to tap into that nostalgia and infuse your home with happiness.

In a nutshelldecorating your home should be fun! Ahead you’ll find interior designer Helen Austen‘s best tips on how to make dopamine decor work for you. (It’s probably best to leave the NSYNC poster in storage, though.)

What Is Dopamine Decor?

Dopamine decor is designing a space focused solely on what brings you joy. “Dopamine is often referred to as a ‘feel-good’ neurochemical and influences our experience of joy and happiness,” says Austen. “By adding color, pattern, and sentimental decor, you can increase your sense of warmth and happiness in your spaces; hence the ‘dopamine decor’ name.”

By using dopamine decor, you have permission to let loose and stop overthinking the design of your home. Surround yourself with things that make you happy, regardless if they fit current trends. Joyful decorating will vary by person, but dopamine decor has become synonymous with bright colors, unique accent pieces, and plenty of patterns. However, don’t forget to keep yourself in check when in comes to over decorating.

Features of Dopamine Decor

  • Bright Colors: Rooms full of bright colors help to uplift your mood.
  • Pattern: Pattern mixing brings layers to a space and adds interest. Here’s your chance to use that bold wallpaper you’ve been eyeing!
  • Unexpected Pieces: An art piece or accessory that’s maybe a little weird is perfect for dopamine decor. “I love to add a dash of the unexpected and items that don’t serve a purpose and are just for sake of fun,” says Austen.
  • Personal Touches: Look for items that are tied to your personal history. A chair fabric that reminds you of your grandma or a lamp shaped like your favorite childhood food anything that sparks a happy memory.

Dopamine Decor Design Examples

What says happiness more than a pink bathtub? This whimsical bathroom from @honeyjoyhome has multiple patterns and colorful vintage-inspired tile, but the overall design is still well-balanced and inviting.

Dopamine Decor Pros and Cons

Like any design style, there are benefits and drawbacks to dopamine decor. The advantage of dopamine decor is in the namethe happy feelings! “Dopamine decor helps us to make choices that stimulate positive and uplifting feelings,” says Austen. “It can also increase your sense of energy and wellbeing.”

On the other hand, dopamine decor’s bright and busy attributes can be too much for some spaces. “For most neurotypical people, if you add too much intense color and pattern in an area you spend a lot of time in like a living room, kitchen or primary bedroom it can feel too intense and overwhelming,” says Austen. She suggests starting small with dopamine decor like in a powder room, laundry room, or entryway.

Is Dopamine Decor Right For Me?

Dopamine decor can be whatever you want it to be, the only requirement is that the design sparks joy for you personally. Austen says, “Follow your intuition and choose colors and patterned wallpaper that make you smile inside. Be brave, try new things, and don’t listen to what your mother-in-law or neighbor thinks about your choices.”
