Which Hyundai Vehicles are Affected

The affected vehicles, manufactured between August 10, 2018, and August 25, 2023, are equipped with a glass bulb-type TPRD designed to vent hydrogen gas in cases of tank over-pressurization. However, manufacturing defects have resulted in possible microcracks in the glass components, which could cause premature fracturing and unintended hydrogen discharge during normal vehicle operation.

According to the safety recall report filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the risk is particularly concerning when vehicles are parked in confined spaces where leaked hydrogen gas could accumulate near potential ignition sources. While only an estimated 1% of the recalled vehicles are expected to have the defect, Hyundai is taking proactive measures to ensure customer safety.

Vehicle owners may notice several warning signs if their TPRD malfunctions, including a loud rushing wind noise, a white fog-like cloud near the rear of the vehicle, rapid decrease in fuel gauge readings, and illumination of the malfunction indicator lamp in the instrument cluster.

Whats Involved in How to Install Metal Roofing

A steel roof is a lifetime investment, lasting 50 years or more if its a good one. Asphalt roofs typically last 20 to 30 years, depending on the installation and shingle quality. So, the investment might be worth it, but the range of choices makes shopping for a steel roofing system more complicated than you might think.

If you want to install steel over asphalt, your best choice for installing metal roofing is to use a steel shingle system like the one shown instead of the more common (and more expensive) standing seam steel. In a standing seam roof, long, single panels run vertically all the way from the eave to the ridge. In contrast, steel shingles are small panels installed in horizontal rows much like other shingles.

Better steel shingle systems, like the one shown, are installed over a framework of 2x2s. This framework has three big advantages. First, because the frame is screwed directly to the rafters and the interlocked shingles are screwed to the frame, the roof can withstand winds of up to 120 mph without damage. Second, the frame creates a flat and straight surface even when the shingles are badly curled or the roof ridge is bowed.

Finally, the frame creates a ventilation gap that helps prevent ice dams in the winter and cools the roof and the house in the summer. To vent the roof, holes are cut in the old roof above the soffit, which pulls air through the soffit vents underneath. Cool outside air then travels under the shingles to the vented ridge, pulling out moisture and heat.

Steel roofs can be noisy and unattractive in residential settings. However, if the steel roof is installed over an existing asphalt roof, noise shouldnt be a problem. And, as you can see from the photos, if you pick a good-looking style from the many choices available, your house definitely wont look like a cattle barn.

To remove the outer cabinet from this type of washer, first pull off the side trim pieces and remove the retaining screws. Flip the console up and release the spring clips with a screwdriver. Tilt the cabinet forward and lift the cabinet off.

Maytag Washer Repair

To remove the front panel on this type of washer, yank the bottom of the panel outward (you may have to first remove screws). Pull the panel down and out.

Common Washer Machine Problems

Grinding Noise

If you own a Whirlpool direct-drive washer (the water hoses attach to the left side when viewed from the back), youve probably got a broken couplera common failure caused by overloading the machine. Its an easy and inexpensive fix.

Pop the snap retainers with a screwdriver and pull the pump off the motor shaft. Then disconnect the electrical connectors from the motor. Pop the bottom retainer off the motor and prop up the motor while you pop the top retainer (its heavy). Pry the broken coupler pieces off the motor and transmission. Tap the new coupler into place with a wooden block.

Draining Problems

When clothing or jewelry gets stuck in the hose to the pump or the pump itself, the machine wont drain, and you might hear squealing, grinding or smell burning rubber. First, remove the stuck hose that goes from the tub to the pump (drain the water into a bowl) and check for stuck socks (yes, thats where they go). Then, run a coat hanger through the tube and pull out the stuck objects. Next, check the pump for broken blades by shaking it.

Rotate the pump shaft to make sure it spins freely. Replace the pump if you find any damage. If you see any burned or melted sections on the belts, replace them. Maytag belts are specially designed, so dont substitute an ordinary V belt.

Slow Fill or No Fill

If yourwashing machine fills slowly or wont fill at all, try cleaning the inlet screens on the water valve. If that doesnt help, replace the entire water valve assembly.

Wont Agitate or Spin

If the machine fills with water and then just sits there, suspect a broken lid switch. To test the switch, youll need a continuity tester or a multimeter. Remove the wires connected to the switch and touch the testers probes to the switchs connectors. As you open and close the lid, readings should alternate between continuity and no continuity. If not, replace the switch.

To replace the switch on a Whirlpool-type washer, just remove the two screws and screw in the new one. To get at the switch on a Maytag-type washer, youll have to unscrew the access panel behind the console and replace the switch as shown here. Remember to raise the lid before you remove the old switch.

• Tip: Never drop a washing machines lid! Slamming the lid eventually wrecks the lid switch.

Secrets of a Long-Lasting Driveway

Proper amount of slope

One of the main design objectives for a durable asphalt driveway is to provide enough slope for draining water off and away from the driveway. Water should never pond on the surface or next to the driveway where it will seep underneath to weaken the soil or cause frost heaving.

Well-compacted granular base

The main component of a long-lasting driveway is the underlying granular base. It must have the right thickness and composition. Base materials vary by region and can be crushed stone or conbit (recycled concrete and asphaltits crushed and reused).

Crushed coarse materials like these have jagged surfaces, so theyll compact and lock together in a tough, settle-resistant matrix. A binder like cement dust may be added to hold it all together. Coarse materials also drain water from under the driveway so ice wont form and crack the asphalt surface.

Proper asphalt thickness

Once your old driveway has been torn out, you and the contractor should closely examine the existing base (the fill under the asphalt surface) and possibly remove or add material. Digging into the exposed base will tell you its type and thickness. Recommended thicknesses are 8 inches of base over clay soils or 4 inches over well-drained sandy soils. If your base is inadequate, it must be upgraded. Low bids may signal that a contractor isnt prepared to install a good base. Ask the contractor about these details before you sign up.

Good asphalt compaction

Mechanical compaction of the base, subbase and asphalt is crucial for a long-lasting driveway. Ideally, the base should sit for about a week so that natural settling will augment the mechanical compaction. When compacting subbases, contractors will use heavy rollers (or even the tires of the earth-moving equipment) for large areas and plate compactors for smaller areas.

But when rolling out asphalt, heavy compacting equipment is needed. Select a contractor who has 1- to 3-ton rollers for compacting the asphalt itself. Edges are raked and formed to 45-degree angles, then packed with a hand tamper.

In most areas of the country, there are two options for the asphalt itself. The difference is the size of the aggregate (gravel filler) used. The most common mix for residential driveways has finer (1/2 inch or smaller) aggregate and thus forms a smoother surface. Coarser (3/4 inch or smaller) aggregate mixes are stronger but have a rougher finish.

Parking lots and roads are usually a coarser mix. Coarser mixes are also recommended for driveways with heavier traffic, such as RVs, large trucks and tractors. Both mixes cost about the same.

In most parts of the country, the asphalt laid over a properly prepared aggregate base should be 2 to 3 in. thick. If you opt for a 3-in. thick surface, you can use the coarse asphalt mix for a 2-inch thick bottom layer for strength and a 1-inch thick layer of the finer mix on the surface for a better appearance.

Deck Board Spacing with Chalk

Measure an equal distance from each end of the deck, allowing for an overhang (if desired), and snap a chalk line as a guide for the first row of decking. Align the first row with the chalk line and nail or screw the boards to the joists.

Then, use spacers at each joist to keep the gap between boards consistent and to keep the boards running straight. Sixteen-penny nails are about the right size for spacing between deck boards. But sight down your boards occasionally as well. You can easily spot when a board is off.

Rent a Drywall Lift for Ceiling Work

If you have to drywall a ceiling, don’t hesitate to rent a lift. It’s well worth the rental fee and is by far the best way to get a ceiling up without back strain.

Drywall lifts break down into three parts and fit easily into a midsize car. After you reassemble it, release the catch on the wheel and crank it up and down a few times to make sure it’s working smoothly. Then lock the lift and hoist one end of the drywall sheet up to the support hookfinish side down. Now lift the other end of the sheet up and slide it onto the second hook as shown. Lift slowly and smoothlyabrupt or jerky handling can pop the front edge of the drywall off the hook.

Tip the sheet so it’s horizontal and lock it down. Then wheel the lift into approximate position. Lifts are stable and maneuverable, so you can fine-tune the placement when you raise the drywall. Then crank it tight. You may need to get up on a ladder to nudge the sheet into place. Put in at least eight screws before lowering the lift.

Why Do Throttle Cables Get Stuck

Throttle cables sometimes get stuck due to wear and tear, rust, debris buildup, or improper lubrication. When a throttle cable gets stuck, it can hinder the lawnmower’s performance, making it difficult to properly start or adjust the engine speed. Regular maintenance can prevent these issues. However, if you find yourself with a stuck throttle cable, we have a solution to fix your lawn mower in no time.

Fixing a Stuck Throttle Cable

Remove the air cleaner assembly so you can see the choke plate. With the throttle control lever in the choke position, pull on the cable’s outer jacket near the clamp until the choke plate opens. Tighten the clamp with the cable in this position. Reassemble the air cleaner.

If your lawn mower’s throttle cable is hard to move or stuck, here’s a fix: Disconnect both ends of the cable from the mower. To get the cable out, you’ll probably have to remove a bolt and disassemble the lever assembly near the handle. Take a photo to help you put it back together when you’re done.

At the engine end, loosen the clamp that holds the cable to the engine and unhook the cable from the carburetor. Pour penetrating oil into the cable. Grab the inner cable with pliers and work it up and down to loosen it. When the cable moves freely, and all the penetrating oil has drained out, squirt silicone lubricant into the funnel to keep the cable sliding freely. Reinstall the cable.

Examine the Door Latch

Grab a flashlight and study how the door latch (the flexing part operated by the door handle) hits the strike plate.

If the latch doesnt spring into the strike plate, observe whether it hits the plate at the top or bottom. If the latch seems properly centered on the plate, perhaps its sticking on either the front or the back edge of the plate.

When you discover where the latch is getting hung up, file that edge.

File the Striker Plate

Insert either a triangular file or a flat file thats small enough to fit inside the strike plate. File off enough metal to allow the latch to catch inside the plate and secure the door. If your filing action is shaking the strike plate, remove the plate and secure it in a vise for your repair. Then reinstall the plate with longer screws.
