If youve ever held onto a broken gadget, a stack of magazines, or clothes that you might wear someday, youve encountered deferred decision clutter, also known as “procrastination clutter.” Its that collection of items we keep, not because we love them or find them useful, but because we just havent decided what to do with them. These are things we cant quite let go of, so they linger in drawers, closets, and storage bins, adding to the chaos.

Deferred decision clutter, or procrastination clutter, is one of the biggest barriers to a tidy space and clear mind. This type of clutter doesnt just make your home look messyit also takes up mental real estate, adding a layer of stress every time you see it. When we put off making decisions, our brains perceive those deferred choices as tasks that still need attention. This leads to decision fatigue, making the act of decluttering feel even more daunting.

Why We Hold onto Deferred Decision Clutter

Procrastination clutter often sticks around for a few common reasons:

  • Sentimentality: We keep things because they have some emotional significance, even if we rarely use or see them.
  • Guilt: If something was expensive or a gift, we might feel guilty letting it go, even if we dont like it or need it.
  • What if Thinking: We think we might need these items someday, so we keep them just in case. This can be true for old gadgets, duplicate items, or even clothes in a range of sizes.

Deferred decision clutter represents a choice were avoiding, whether thats letting go of the past, facing the possibility of needing something we dont currently use, or simply deciding to toss it. Over time, this habit can lead to an overwhelming amount of stuff that lacks purpose or joy.

Steps to Tackle Deferred Decision Clutter

The good news is that deferred decision clutter can be tackled with a little planning and a few easy steps:

  • Identify Your Clutter Zones: Look for areas where you tend to park items. This could be a junk drawer, a miscellaneous shelf, or that storage bin in the garage. These are often prime spots for deferred decision clutter.
  • Ask the Right Questions: When you find items youve kept indefinitely, ask yourself why youve held onto them. Are you really going to use that old coffee maker you were planning to fix? If not, its time to let it go.
  • Use a Maybe Box: If youre having trouble deciding, try putting uncertain items in a labeled box with a date (a month from now, three months, or whatever feels comfortable). When you revisit it, if you havent missed or used the items, you may find it easier to say goodbye.
  • Forgive the Guilt: Remember that youre not obligated to keep things that dont serve a purpose or make you happy. If its a gift you dont love or an item you spent money on but dont use, its okay to let it go.
  • Celebrate Small Wins: Every time you make a decision, celebrate it as a win. Decluttering can be emotionally taxing, so its important to recognize your progress.

Reclaiming Space and Peace of Mind

Decluttering deferred decision items isnt just about a cleaner home; its about lifting a weight off your mind. By tackling these lingering choices, youre not only making space in your home but also freeing up mental energy to focus on things that matter. Give yourself permission to release the things that no longer serve you. Youll be surprised how refreshing it feels to let go and create room for what truly brings you joy.

I grew up with parents who love music. Dancing was a favorite pastime in my household, and my mother still has an extensive album collection to this day. If you havent noticed, those old-school vinyl records are back in vogue. Now that they’re considered cool again, there’s been some huge growth in LP record player sales. As I looked over my moms old albums, I thought it would be cool to figure out a nice way to display them. With that goal in mind, I began to tinker around with how to make a wooden crate with a vinyl record display.

If you’ll allow me to get on my DIY soapbox: I truly believe that once you know how to make a box, you can make a million things. Lets make it a million and one with this hip and a bit retro wood record crate.

Cut the wood

For this project, I found some 5/8-inch thick walnut wood boards at the lumber yard. If you cannot find any similar boards, you may wish to run 3/4-in. boards through a thickness planner or drum sander to get to 5/8-inch, or simply construct the project using 3/4-inch thick material. Keep in mind the latter will alter some dimensions on the cutting list.

It is a common challenge to deal with multiple devices that need daily chargingfrom smartphones and smartwatches to headphones, laptops, and tablets. When exploring how to organize cables, many people find themselves frustrated by tangled cords that create unsightly clutter. To address this issue, I crafted an elegant solution: a mahogany wood cable management box that not only conceals the mess but adds a touch of style to the space while keeping all charging cords neatly arranged.

When it comes to wood, there are plenty of options to choose from. If you’re trying to keep costs down, you could go with pine from your local hardware store and then add a darker stain if you want. I wanted to go for a wood with more character since I’ll see this box daily.

I designed this box to keep cords tidy on my desk, but you could also create a larger version to organize cords for your TV or home theater surround sound system. If you choose this option, I recommend adding a few more front openings for cords to pass through the box rather than just two. Make sure to measure your surge protector to ensure it fits into the wooden box, as surge protectors come in various sizes. I also suggest getting some cable ties to group the cables inside the box, reducing the amount of space they take up. These are relatively inexpensive and can be purchased online or in-store.

Do yourself a favor and organize the cluster of cords on your desk. The good news is that you don’t need to be a professional for this quick DIY project.

When we moved in, our home had a coat closet near the front door that we never used. Over the years, it just started to fill with a bunch of junk, and I knew I could make something more functional in that space. I wanted to make a drop zone for all my kids’ stuff. I needed three cubbies, one for each kid. I also wanted a deep bench and space under each cubby to put a large basket for each kid’s shoes and other items.

(You can watch the first part of the project here, on Kyle’s Instagram account.)

I started by removing the door and then demoed the existing wall to open the entire closet space up from the floor to the ceiling.

Once I had the closet opened up, I removed the existing flooring and installed new flooring to match what was in the rest of the house.

At that point, I had a blank slate to work with. I couldn’t really make a plan until the full space was opened up and accessible. After gathering the measurements, I designed the actual build and came up with a cut list of all the pieces I would need to complete the assembly. To cut costs on materials and make the project more budget-friendly, I used big sheets of 4x8ft MDF. I used cutlistoptimizer.com to plan all the cuts. I like that website because it plots all the cuts on the materials you have on hand to minimize waste as well as the number of cuts needed. You can even put in scrap piece sizes to see what you can get out of those smaller leftover scraps. I ended up needing two big sheets of MDF ($45 each) to make all the cuts.

I also picked up a half sheet of red oak plywood to make the bench top ($50 at my local lumber yard).

Once I made all the cuts, I was ready to assemble the unit. I made it in two parts. The lower box/bench base had an open bottom and two dividers to make the three cubbies. I placed that in the space first, then I used leftover underlayment to create a template to cut the red oak into a benchtop. Once I placed the bench top on the lower box/cabinet, I added an extra 1-inch wide strip of material to the bottom lip of the bench overhang, which made the bench appear to be 1.5 thick. I used edge banding to cover the raw plywood edge and make the bench look like a solid slab of wood, much like butcher block. I stained the bench top with Dark Walnut Watco Danish Oil ($13), which sealed and stained the wood to give it a darker appearance.

I installed MDF side panels to create the illusion of a full cabinet, then I used a panel of faux shiplap ($28) for the back of the cubbies, and then I installed MDF dividers to create three individual cubbies.

Next, I mounted a large upper box on the wall above the three cubbies to make an upper storage area. This was just extra open space for additional storage. Finally, I installed a piece of MDF at the top of the unit to close the gap between the ceiling. I thought about making this panel hinged to allow access to the space, but I figured since it was so high up, it would be impractical and I just sealed it up. I used PVC base cap molding ($15) to create a picture frame box molding detail to make the top of the cabinet more aesthetic. I also installed a piece of crown molding I got from my local lumber yard ($10) across the top of the cabinet to cover the seam along the ceiling.

Once the cabinet was fully built, I trimmed all the seams, faces, and edges with various MDF trim pieces (about $50).

Since this was all constructed with raw MDF, it needed to be primed before painting to ensure even coverage and good paint adhesion. I used KILZ brand all-purpose primer ($24) to prime the entire cabinet. Anything that was going to get painted, got primed first.

After the primer cured, I lightly sanded everything with a 150 grit sanding sponge ($9) to give me a nice smooth finish to paint on.

I used Behr Urethane Alkyd Enamel paint ($45) in a satin finish. I like this particular paint for all cabinetry projects because it levels out very nicely, leaving no brush strokes for a spray-quality finish.

I used a combination of a Zibra angle brush ($14), a Zibra triangle trim and corner brush ($10), and a 4-inch high-density foam roller, which can be purchased in a kit ($15) that comes with the foam roller, the roller handle, and the paint tray.

When it comes to painting cabinets, the goal is thin, even coats of paint, and it is important to follow the directions on the paint can to ensure proper dry and recoat times. I did three coats of paint, letting each coat dry for 24 hours before doing the next coat. I also sanded with a 220 grit sanding sponge ($9) between coats to make sure everything stayed nice and smooth.

Once the paint was dry, I installed three backpack hooks ($6 each) and three water bottle hooks ($3 each). I also purchased three wicker baskets that fit in each lower cubby ($35 each) and four fabric storage boxes for the upper storage area ($10 each).

The entire project took about six days, and I am so happy with the results. It is so much more functional than the coat closet, and it’s the perfect space for my kids to drop all their stuff as they go in and out to various activities.

Long ago, I realized that one quick and simple way to organize your home is to build a DIY drawer divider for your junk drawers. We all have at least one junk drawer in our desk or kitchen cabinets. Most of us cant stand it and yet dont know what to do with it. Organization has always been near and dear to my heart, so I decided to tackle that drawer mess and am happy to share how I went about it by making a drawer organizer with an unexpected material that makes it completely washable and waterproof.

I found it easier to make repetitive half-lap joints with my router and a custom jig than with a table saw. This jig enabled me to repeat the cuts without measuring each time I repeated the same cut.

Overview of Jig

Overview Of Jig

Jig Cutting List

KEYQTY.PARTDIMENSIONS
A2Jig front/back3/4″ x 1-1/2″ x 12″
B2Jig side1/4″ x 4″ x 6″
C2PVC spacers1/2″ x 5/16″ x 2-1/2″
D1PVC index spacer5/16″ x 5/16″ x 1″

Measure the drawer and cut the PVC

I chose 5/16-inch thick exterior PVC siding trim for the drawer organizer. It is textured on one side and smooth on the other. Since it is made of PVC, your drawer divider can be easily dismantled and cleaned when necessary. Furthermore, this material cuts very easily and cleanly with a router.

Measure the height of your drawer and rip the PVC material so it is at least 1/2-inch shorter than the top of the drawer box.

Measure the length and width of the inside of your drawer. To start, cut three pieces of the ripped PVC to the length and another three pieces to the width. Once you have determined the layout and size of the compartments you’d like in your drawer, cut more for the rest of the drawer.

Shelf Dividers

When you don’t have a lot of drawer space, sweatshirts and other clothing items can be store on closet shelves. To keep folded stacks neat and tidy, use shelf dividers, as seen here in this closet from @meaghankessmanhome. The wire dividers clamp onto the shelves to keep them upright and sturdy. Another clever idea is the clear bins for accessories, which keep everything corralled but still visible.

What We Like About It: “The goal is always to have everything be easily visible and accessible. You want to find what you need when you need it!” says Winter.

Before Assembling Your Closet System

Read the instructions before you start. Once you buy your storage components, compare the parts list with what is included in the box. If something is missing, you can get it before you begin the installation instead of having to stop in the middle.

Remove closet doors. If possible, remove the closet doors before installing new storage components to avoid scratching them and to give yourself the widest possible area to work in.

How To Start Decluttering When It Feels Overwhelming https://www.familyhandyman.com/article/how-to-start-decluttering-when-overwhelmed/ Mon, 25 Mar 2024 18:15:56 +0000 Clutter stresses us out. So does decluttering. An organizational expert explains how to declutter and avoid becoming overwhelmed.

The post How To Start Decluttering When It Feels Overwhelming appeared first on Family Handyman.

]]>
We’ve all been there. The mountains of mail, the overstuffed closet. From tools to toys, clutter just becomes part of the background. Even the neatest among us accumulates a lot of stuff. When do we do something about it?

“I think you know in your gut that it’s time to start letting go,” says Mary Cornetta, chief executive officer of Organized Overall. “[It’s time] when the clutter really starts to stress you out, you’re misplacing things more frequently, and the floors and countertops are starting to disappear.”

But knowing you need to declutter and actually decluttering are different things. It’s hard to take that first step because the task seems so overwhelming. It’s not hopeless, though. If you’re ready to start, Cornetta’s expert techniques will get you on the path to organization, without the stress.

Start With the Easy Stuff

The first things to go? “Anything with an expiration date,” says Cornetta, who also founded and owns Sort and Sweet professional organizers.

Getting rid of “no-brainer” items like expired medicines and stale food works wonders for your confidence. Open up your medicine cabinet and check the bottles and boxes. Next, tackle the pantry. Ditch anything expired or empty.

“As you gain confidence in your decluttering skills, you can move on to a space like your closet,” says Cornetta. It’s hard to part with our things, so it pays to start with something that doesn’t require much thinking. If it’s out of date, get rid of it no decision-making needed.

Pick a Small Space

Cropped Hands Of Person Preparing Food On Table

Another way to jump into decluttering is starting small.

Most of us have a junk drawer in the kitchen, or several. Cornetta says decluttering a small space like a drawer, your purse or a backpack is a great first step, especially if you don’t have a lot of time. “Doing a little decluttering is better than doing none at all!” she says.

So take 15 minutes and go through your sock drawer. You’ll feel better and gain confidence to tackle bigger spaces.

Bring in a Friend

Friends are there for us through thick and thin job changes, breakups and the daily grind of life. If you’re feeling overwhelmed about the prospect of decluttering your home, enlist a buddy to help.

This works great for people who work well in teams, says Cornetta. And if a friend won’t tell you those old jeans have to go, who will?

Professional organizers are an option too, Cornetta says. And don’t overlook your family members. “If the clutter is your partner’s or kid’s, it’s really important to include them,” she says. “Not only is it their stuff to make decisions on, it takes the load off of only you.”

Make a Schedule

If you’re eager to declutter but can’t seem to kick-start the process, Cornetta recommends scheduling dates on your calendar. Scheduling declutter days will keep you from backsliding, too. Clutter seems to magically accumulate, but knowing there’s a declutter date around the corner can ease your mind.

“Look at the year ahead and schedule two closet decluttering days, four for skincare, makeup and medicine, and monthly or bimonthly sessions for the pantry,” Cornetta says. Choose a schedule that makes sense for you and stick to it.

Make Your Bed Every Day

Senior Asian woman doing her morning routine, making up her bed at home. Let's get the day started

Do you make your bed? It’s a great way to get you in the right frame of mind for decluttering and staying organized, says Cornetta. “This simple 60-second act will set the tone for the rest of your room (and day),” she says.

Most people make their beds at least some of the time, according to the National Sleep Foundation. If you’re one of the bed-making majority, make the effort to do it every day to give yourself a boost. And if you’re not, it’s a great time to start.

Declutter Regularly

If you’re struggling with clutter and need another incentive to streamline, here’s a tip: If you can make it part of your routine, over time you’ll reduce your workload around the house. A clutter-free home means less time spent cleaning and searching for things.

“Having less stuff means having less to clean up or tidy,” Cornetta says. “Decluttering regularly is really the most powerful way to stay organized.”

If you’re looking for a new DIY project, this may be a good time to visit your closest IKEA store. Since 2022, a growing trend has emerged of turning IKEA hardwood bread boxes into cabinets and side tables. If you’re unfamiliar with IKEA’s bread box, it’s called the MAGASIN Bread Bin, and you can get it online!

The basic concept of this upcycling hack is simplebuy a bread box (or two), turn it on its side so the sliding cover becomes a door, add paint and legs as desired, and voila, your bread-side table or bread box cabinet is born. Several variations exist, including fastening two boxes together side-by-side to make a 2-door cabinet, and stacking several boxes to create a multi-tiered storage unit.

The hack continues to gain steam, thanks to people’s ongoing appreciation of fast, easy, DIY projects like this work bench kitchen island and the IKEA Kallax shelf storage hack. IKEA’s bread boxes are sturdy, attractive and roomy, making them a natural candidate for up-cycling into something to store items besides bread.

How to Build an IKEA Bread Box Table

Here’s how to turn two IKEA bread boxes into an elegant “bread-side” table with built-in storage.

What You’ll Need

Directions

  • Flip one of your two breadboxes upside down and lay a bead of wood glue along the perimeter of the bottom.
  • Place the second breadbox carefully on top of the first, lining up the bottom edges of the two boxes so the glue bonds them together symmetrically.
  • Ensure the two boxes are perfectly aligned with each other, then lay a flat, heavy object (i.e., a stack of books) on top of the top box to weigh it down and ensure a strong glue joint.
  • Wipe away any excess glue that squeezes out along the joint using a wet cloth.
  • Allow the glue to dry overnight.
  • Decide where you’d like to paint your table and choose a color. Painting the top and bottom surfaces and door handles while leaving the rest unpainted gives a nice contrast.
  • Lightly sand the areas you want to paint using 180-grit paper. This boosts paint adhesion.
  • Vacuum away any dust.
  • Mask any areas you don’t want to paint, then apply primer and paint. Allow enough time for the paint to dry.
  • Use a screwdriver or impact driver to fasten four hairpin legs symmetrically to the bottom of your table.

A jammed-up closet is not just an eyesore; it’s a stress-maker. But chances are you only wear a small percentage of those duds, which means decluttering your closet isn’t as daunting a task as it soundsand the result will be freeing.

“Having a closet that only has the items you love, where you can find everything easily, is like a welcome hug in the morning. It can help you start off your day in a positive frame of mind,” says Michele Vig, founder of Neat Little Nest.

If you’ve been yearning for a streamlined closet, here’s how to master the decluttering process with tips from five master organizers.

Why You Should Declutter Your Closet

Decluttering your closet, or any space, makes it easier to find the resources you have, plus it reduces anxiety. It also saves you money and helps you become more sustainable, by helping you avoid buying things you don’t need.

“When we accumulate excess, we’re often contributing to overconsumption, which places unnecessary strain on the planet’s resources,” says Ben Hardman, creator of Tiny Eco Home Life. “By thoughtfully downsizing, you’re not only simplifying and minimizing your life, but you’ll also be reducing your environmental footprint over the long term.”

Tips for Decluttering Your Closet

Studies show that we wear about 20% of our clothing 80% of the time, so the ultimate goal of decluttering your closet is to get to the point where you like and wear every item inside, says Courtney Cummings, founder of The Stylish Organizer. Here’s how to accomplish that.

Pull everything out

Yes, every last bit. “Seeing all that you own will have a big visual impact when brought together,” says Julie Leonard, a certified life and decluttering coach.

Spread everything out, including clothing and accessories not stored in your closet, so you can see the full extent of what you’re dealing with. As you pull out your clothes, separate them into categories like jeans, dress pants, blouses, etc. You can also use this as an opportunity to dust the shelves and vacuum before putting your clothes back in.

Edit by category

5 Tips For Decluttering Your Closet

Focus on one category of clothing at a time, such as T-shirts or skirts, systematically weighing the importance of each item. “That way, you don’t end up keeping twelve pairs of light khaki pants or five black cardigans,” says Cummings.

To decide what to keep, ask yourself:

  • Do you wear it? If you haven’t in the past year (or two for winter garb), it’s probably time to let it go.
  • Does it fit? Try it on, and if it doesn’t, it’s time to part ways. “Clear out space for clothes you’ll actually wear, and stop holding onto things ‘just in case,” says Tina Priestly, CEO of Ready, Set, Refresh.
  • Can you store it? Consider storing seasonal clothes and shoes in temporary storage during the fall and winter months, says Elizabeth Dodson, co-founder of HomeZada.
  • Does it make you feel bad? “Perhaps you associate an item with a bad time in your life,” says Leonard. “Maybe you don’t like the texture, or it was expensive and then you never wore it? All of these items should go.”
  • Is it impractical? Be ruthless with these, says Leonard. “Those boots that rub your heel, the top that is see-through, the dress that doesn’t fit well, you will never wear them.”
  • Is it stained or damaged? Keep a few for rags, but the rest goes.
  • Do you have duplicates? You probably don’t need 10 pairs of jeans.
  • Does it resonate with you? It’s ok to let it go, even if it was a gift. Someone else will enjoy it more.
  • Do you like to color? If not, you will never feel your best in it.
  • Will you actually mend it? If you’re not ever going to fix those ripped jeans, it’s probably time to let them go.
  • Is it clothing or a keepsake? “I love my concert t-shirts and have some I’ve had for decades,” says Leonard. “Keep this memorabilia, but store it in a memory box, not in your wardrobe.
  • What are you saving it for? Don’t wait for a special occasion. Either sell it or use it. “Wear your good underwear or that cashmere jumper and feel your best,” says Leonard.

Create a maybe pile

Don’t let indecision hinder your progress. Create a “maybe” pile to revisit after you have gone through everything, says Leonard. You may be more ruthless the second time around.

“Or hang your clothes with the coat hangers facing the same way and when you wear an item, turn the coat hanger the other way,” says Leonard. “After six months, see which clothes you wear.”

Go through it again

Cummings suggests sorting through your keep pile one more time to double-check your thoughts on each piece. “Then, you have done it!” she says. You have now intentionally gone through each item in your closet and determined what will be allowed back in. That deserves a gold star!”

Sort the purge

Put the clothes you’re ditching into three piles: donate, sell and recycle. And don’t forget to invite friends and family over, which can be a quick way to get rid of a few favorites.

Discard everything swiftly

Two of our experts emphasized not getting stuck on trying to figure out the perfect place to donate or sell items, since it’s tempting to reclaim lingerers. “Come to terms with the need for them to move along, and trust that the local donations facility that serves your community will get it into the best next hand,” says Vig.

However, Leonard cautions against making rash decisions, lest you end up with decluttering regret. Consider bagging up items to see if you look for them over the next six months. If not, then donate the bag.

Create an organizing system

5 Tips For Decluttering Your Closet

Once you’re free of your closet clutter, keep it that way by updating your system.

To help with this:

  • Assess your closet space. Does it need another hanging rod, cubby organizers or shelving?
  • Invest in quality hangers, and use the same kind for a clean, organized look. “Slim velvet hangers work best for lighter clothes, while wooden hangers are perfect for heavier items like jackets,” says Priestly.
  • Buy or DIY a shoe rack to maximize space. “Personally, I prefer racks that keep shoes off the floor,” says Dodson.
  • Regularly maintain your new freedom. “My seasonal switch outs and decluttering sessions are done in under an hour,” says Vig.

How To Quickly Declutter Your Closet

If you’re in a rush to conquer your closet:

  • Do a quick pick-through, getting rid of obvious items you no longer wear. “This will make a big difference quickly and make the rest of your organizing easier,” says Priestly.
  • Break the task into small bites, such as your sock drawer or T-shirts. “Even 15 minutes of thoughtful decluttering a day can go a long way to helping you achieve your goals.” Says Cummings.
  • Hire a professional organizer or find a friend to help. “A friend can help keep you on task, get donations together and clean your shelves while you’re making decisions.” Says Vig.

I am guilty of having way too many jackets, hats and shoes. When I went looking to purchase a ready-made clothing rack, my options were not very attractive and seemed flimsy. So I then turned down the road of wanting to build a clothing rack. Whenever I go about wanting to make anything, I consider both form and function. Basically, what is it going to look like and what is it going to do?

When designing my own ideal DIY clothing rack, I had important criteria when it comes to function. First, the rack had to be sturdy and strong, with a variety of options for clothes storage. Second, I would like to easily move it around when necessary. And third, I wanted it to look good. These three criteria narrowed down my materials to industrial pipe and wood with a few wheels or casters.

Now to put them all together.

I love the industrial look of plumbing pipe. Plus, not many other choices would make a stronger clothing rack. I started by drawing out what I wanted the rack to look like. That meant deciding exactly how many rods for hanging clothes and shelves for shoes I wanted. As I broke that decision down, it occurred to me: I could make my clothing rack two-sided. That way, when I didn’t want the clothes to show, I could flip it around and just have two shelves showing.

Here is the easy step-by-step process I ended up following. This is a beginner level woodworking project because the only cuts you will need to make are with the 1×2 trim- the plywood sheet you can purchase already cut. This is a perfect place to start for carpentry 101. This project is more about putting the pieces together than crafting intricate angles.

Author’s note: I have given an accurate count of the materials you will need for this specific configuration if you want to change something, be sure to test it before hand.

Assemble the plumbing fittings for the front wall

Before you even begin cutting any wood, I highly suggest you put together all your pipe fittings. Doing this will ensure you have the right couplers in place and allow you to accurately determine the measurements for the support wall (A) and base (B). This will set the course for the rest of the build.

I put together the whole plumbing configuration on a table. That way when it came time to screw it to the base and support wall (A), I simply moved it into place and screwed it in. By doing this first, you can confirm the size you want for the base (B) and the support wall (A) and you’ll have most of the figuring out done right away.

Note: I did not add any adhesive to my threads but you may choose to do so.

Fhma24 Gladiator Flex Cabinet System

Best Garage Storage System with Locking System

Gladiator Flex Cabinet System

Family Handymans shopping editor, Mary Henn, tested the Gladiator Flex cabinet system to see how it stacks up against the rest. Actually, I gifted the Gladiator Flex cabinet system to my mother who, being quite the handywoman herself, was in desperate need of a storage system to hold tools, paint and supplies that arent in use,” Henn says.

The Gladiator Flex cabinet system is an adjustable storage solution made of welded steel. The Flex cabinet system IV holds an impressive 2,350 pounds of weight and includes seven fully adjustable shelves that fit within the cabinets. Theres also a locking system on all of the cabinets, which is great for keeping items safe and out of reach in homes with young children, Henn says. Thats right, this pick is useful for stowing away nail guns, hand saws and other potentially dangerous tools. Youll just want to remember where you keep the key.

My mother loves the sleek, modern design of the metal cabinets with their powder-coat finish and recessed handles, Henn says. She also loves that the doors on the cabinets stay quiet while opening and closing. Thanks to the soft-close doors, you dont have to worry about waking anyone up while tinkering around in your garage or workshop late at night.

All in all, the cabinets took us about three and a half hours to assemble and mount, Henn explains. We scheduled a specific date and time for the Gladiator Flex cabinet system to be delivered, and the unit was delivered by a professional on time. While we did assemble the system ourselvesand without much difficulty, I might addthe system did not come with mounting hardware. So, we had to acquire that after we had the cabinets assembled and ready to mount.

In addition to the convenient locking feature, we love that the Gladiator brand offers a wide range of products when it comes to garage storage. You can shop compatible gear tracks, as well as other matching accessories and storage units with wheels, drawers and built-in workspaces from the brand for a customizable feel.

What’s the Best Way To Pack Clothes for Moving? https://www.familyhandyman.com/article/how-to-pack-clothes-for-moving/ Wed, 13 Dec 2023 18:01:58 +0000 https://www.familyhandyman.com/?p=589431 Boxes? Bags? Vacuum packing? Here's how to keep your clothes in good shape and make moving a little less of a hassle.

The post What’s the Best Way To Pack Clothes for Moving? appeared first on Family Handyman.

]]>
I’ve moved at least a couple of dozen times in my life, all with pretty much the same strategy of just stuffing my clothes into garbage bags. It’s not elegant, and it hasn’t always ended well. So with another move on the horizon, I figured it was finally time to find a better way.

I asked some experts about the pros and cons of various ways to pack clothes for moving, and what they recommend as the best strategy overall. Here’s what Neat Little Nest founder and chief organizer Michele Vig and Bellhop vice president of operations Nick Valentino had to say.

Should You Start by Sorting Your Clothes?

Yes, if you have time. Your future self will be pleased with your past self when it comes time to unpack everything.

“The key here is to pack with your destination in mind,” says Valentino. “Every individual bag, box or container of clothes should be destined for the same room. This will make unpacking a much quicker and easier task.”

Adds Vig: “It will also provide you one last opportunity to declutter as you are finalizing things before you move, as seeing like things together might make it obvious that you have more than you need or want of one category.”

Clothes Packing Options

Here are some preferred options for packing your clothes for the big move, along with their pros and cons.

Suitcases

Suitcases save space, but they’re limited on the amount they can hold. “I’d recommend choosing one or two categories that might fit into the suitcase, like socks and underwear, so that it’s easy to keep track of what is where,” says Vig.

Pro tip: Fold your clothesfirst to maximize suitcase room.

Bags

Packing clothes in canvas shopping bags, laundry bags and the like saves money on boxes, plus they’re easy to carry. But there are some big cons, Vig says: “They’re almost impossible to label, can only carry a small number of items and might not be likely to be unpacked straight away as you would with a cardboard moving box.”

Pro tip: Stay away from single-use plastic and garbage bags, which are likely to rip and dump your clothes on the ground.

Cardboard boxes

Cardboard moving boxes are expensive but offer a lot of benefits. They’re lightweight and recyclable, and you can write on them to keep track of their contents. To save money, look for used ones, from a neighbor who recently moved or stores discarding them.

Wardrobe boxes

Wardrobe boxes, aka hanging boxes, are sturdy and come with a built-in bar for hanging clothes.

“These are absolutely essential for some items,” says Valentino. “They’re going to do the best job of protecting delicate, easy-to-wrinkle items, and they’re also the simplest way to move large numbers of items on hangers without having to individually remove them from hangers in the process.”

Vig agrees. “They are truly the best way to move hanging clothes long distances,” she says. The downsides? The price, and logistics. “They usually require a team approach to move and a large moving van, versus an SUV or car,” Vig says.

Pro tip: Pack shoes and other closet essentials in the bottom of these boxes, so everything ends up in the same space when you’re unpacking.

Vacuum packing

“This is an ideal choice for high-volume, durable items like T-shirts, socks, underwear and other things you won’t mind wrinkling,” says Valentino. It’s also an affordable choice, because simple vacuum packing systems cost less than $50. Plus, it saves space in the moving van.

Clothing as a packing material

If you don’t mind your clothes getting dusty and wrinkled, using them to protect fragile items is the ultimate low-budget solution.

“You can, for example, partly clear out dresser drawers and nestle items in among the clothes for safe packing, or use rags, towels or T-shirts to individually pack delicate glassware,” says Valentino.

What Is the Best Way To Pack Clothes for Moving?

Vacuum packing, Valentino says.

“This approach takes up the minimum possible amount of space, meaning that you’ll spend less money on boxes and moving trucks,” he says. “It’s not a good choice for anything that wrinkles easily, but otherwise, it works great.”

Vig votes for boxes, hanging and smaller cardboard ones. “Hanging boxes will keep those items looking nice and will save you a lot of ironing on the receiving end,” she says.

Then file fold non-hanging clothes into smaller boxes. “This way, you’ll be able to pull them right out of the box and put them in the drawer of your new home,” she says.

Also, you can make life easier by unpacking your clothes promptly to avoid wrinkles and a musty smell. “You’ll have a lot of priorities when you’re moving, but put unpacking clothes at the top of your list unless you want to spend a lot of time ironing,” says Valentino.

About the Experts

  • Michele Vig founded Neat Little Nest to help clients declutter, organize and build the lives they envision. Certified in the KonMari decluttering method, she’s a member of the National Association of Productivity and Organizing Professionals.
  • Nick Valentino is vice president of operations for Bellhop moving services. He ensures his movers are certified and apply best practices on every move they conduct.

Is It Better To Roll Your Clothes or Fold Them? https://www.familyhandyman.com/article/is-it-better-to-roll-your-clothes-or-fold-them/ Fri, 08 Dec 2023 21:30:03 +0000 https://www.familyhandyman.com/?p=588591 Save space, save time, or save yourself from ironing? We asked the pros whether it's better to roll your clothes or fold them, and here's their take.

The post Is It Better To Roll Your Clothes or Fold Them? appeared first on Family Handyman.

]]>
It’s a well-known packing hack roll your clothes to reduce wrinkling and take up less space in your suitcase. And I admit, when it comes to packing for a trip, I’m firmly on Team Roll, especially when the hack is combined with space-saving packing cubes. But is rolling clothes only suitable when traveling, or is it still applicable when you’re organizing clothes for everyday use or seasonal storage?

“The roll vs. fold debate has been going on for a long time,” says Darla DeMorrow, a Certified Professional Organizer and owner of HeartWork Organizing. “But the type of organization you prefer won’t change the dimensions of your drawers or how much stuff you can put in them. As good as we are, even we professional organizers can’t change the laws of physics!”

We asked DeMorrow and a colleague to weigh in on the pros and cons of rolling versus folding and they had a lot to say on the subject.

Roll or Fold: Which Saves More Space?

As you might expect, the space-saving benefits of rolling or folding clothes depend largely on the space you’re trying to fit those clothes into. We asked our pros to address the following scenarios, and whether they’re Team Roll or Team Fold.

Organizing everyday clothes

Whether it’s more effective to roll or fold clothes in a bedroom dresser depends on the type of clothing, says professional home organizer and declutter expert Brenda Scott of Tidy My Space. “Folding saves more space but it depends on the bulkiness and size of the item, she says. “Children’s little clothing can be either folded or rolled but adult size t-shirts or jeans are much larger and take to folding better.” DeMorrow adds that If you have very shallow drawers, “rolling can help you keep everything visible in a single layer. Deeper drawers may not work as well for rolling lightweight and mid-weight fabrics.”

Putting clothes away for seasonal storage

Scott is Team Fold on this one, while DeMorrow is indifferent. “You are likely to wash them all before you wear them next season,” she says. “Pack them away however they fit best in your bins or containers. For all but a very few garments, like ballgowns and tuxes, a wash-and-dry cycle (or just a fluff cycle) will remove any storage wrinkles.”

Packing for a trip

“I prefer rolling,” says DeMorrow, “not because it eliminates wrinkles (it doesn’t), but because rolling a day’s worth of travel clothes into a tight little package can make staying organized easier on the road.” Scott is also a fan of rolling clothes for travel packing because it, “saves space and items can be rolled together.” If you don’t have time to unpack in your hotel room, rolled clothes also offer a quick glance at your wardrobe choices without having to take things out of your suitcase.

Packing for a house move

If you’re packing up all your clothes for a move, Scott says to fold clothes and put them in vacuum bags in order to reduce the size of the container needed. “You can get more into a moving box if the air is removed. This is especially true for sweaters, parkas, bedding and towels.” DeMorrow adds that short-haul moves often allow you to keep folded clothes in drawers and dressers. “If not,” she says, “and for long-haul moves, place your clothing in moving boxes in layers, with a towel or packing paper separating layers going in different drawers.”

Roll or Fold: Which Is Better for Your Clothes?

Many of us have bought in on the idea that rolling clothes reduces wrinkles, but it may not be true. “Wrinkles happen,” says DeMorrow. “The idea that rolled clothes don’t wrinkle is ridiculous. What does change, though, is where you put the creases and whether you create pressure on flat folded items by stacking more flat folded items on top of them.” For example, she explains, “If you flat-fold garments and then store them in stacks, the weight of the other garments may cause creases.”

But rolling might not be the answer. “If you convert a packed drawer full of t-shirts from folded to rolled, but then you crush the stacks from the front to the back of the drawer, you’ll still end up with wrinkles,” says DeMorrow. “Remember, there’s no new space created in that drawer without editing out some items.”

Scott prefers rolling slinky fabrics, like satin. “Rolling will reduce wrinkles that folding may cause,” she says. “Even when rolling, you need to have the garment as smooth as possible. Rolling doesn’t mean crumbled up in a ball!”

Whether rolled or folded, DeMorrow likes clothes to be visible from the top, or “filed” inside a drawer if there is room. “This means you can see everything at a glance, with nothing hiding under a pile.

Is Roll vs. Fold Just a Question of Personal Preference?

I once tried rolling all my tween daughter’s shirts and pants, so that she could more easily see the contents of her dresser without tossing things hither and yon searching for a favorite item. I was proud of my system, but it lasted all of a week until my mother-in-law came over and kindly offered to fold my laundry. Since I don’t complain when people offer to fold my laundry, I let it go, and we went back to folded clothes.

Which one of us was “right?” Scott says it’s as much a matter of personal preference as anything, along with “hand dexterity, mental capability to solve the folding puzzle, the time you allocate to putting clothes away and the space available for clothing.” DeMorrow agrees and says Team Roll or Team Fold is 100% a question of personal preference. “Well, maybe 95%. Some drawers are oddly narrow, too deep or frustratingly shallow, and need to be optimized for your wardrobe. It might take several tries to really optimize the space in drawers and on shelves for folded and rolled clothing. Don’t stop at the first try if you think there might be a better way to store your stuff.”

And she closes this roll or fold debate with a brilliant closet storage hack: “Maximize all of your hanging space, swapping out a single clothes rod for a double-hang rod.” This is an especially helpful tip for a small closet.

“This is one instance where you literally can double your useable space,” says DeMorrow.

Pegboards are a time-tested way to reduce clutter and free up valuable workspace while keeping tools and supplies close at hand.

I used to store paint in the basement and brushes and rollers in the garage until I decided bring them all together. I picked up some used pegboard from a Habitat for Humanity ReStore, and a pair of 1×2 boards to use as furring strips.

The strips hold the pegboard out far enough from the wall to allow the pegs to fit in. Metal washers or plastic spacers (the ones that come with TV mounts are perfect for this) work just as well.

This is a terrific project for beginners without spending much on tools or materials. I used a jigsaw and a miter saw, but you can also make all the cuts with hand tools.

Prep and measure

  • Examine the wall where the pegboard will hang. Make sure there are no hooks or any damage that needs repair.

How to Make the Most of a Galley Kitchen https://www.familyhandyman.com/article/galley-kitchens-organize-decorate/ Mon, 23 Oct 2023 16:14:55 +0000 Small spaces require creative design and storage solutions.

The post How to Make the Most of a Galley Kitchen appeared first on Family Handyman.

]]>
In apartments and small houses, it’s no secret space is a commodity. Home developers use tons of creative layouts to maximize floor and storage space. One such layout has been gaining popularity in recent years: the galley kitchen.

If you’ve recently moved into a space with a galley kitchen, consider this your guide to making the most of it. From organizing cabinets to crafting an uncluttered aesthetic, these tips will ensure your small space is functional and gorgeous.

An Introduction to the Galley Kitchen

A “galley” denotes the kitchen space on a ship or aircraft, where this space-saving kitchen design originated.

In an interview with House Beautiful,Abbe Fenimore, founder and principal designer of Studio Ten 25, says, “Galley kitchens are longer, narrow spaces that provide upper and lower cabinets in a walkway-type layout.” Basically, all kitchen appliances, counters and cabinets are separated into two parallel rows, forming an aisle.

How to Design a Galley Kitchen

Select your materials and appliances carefully.

“[T]he most important thing to remember with a galley kitchen is scale,” says Laura Lubin, founder and principal designer of Ellerslie Interiors, in an interview with Southern Living. “You can minimize counter overhangs, thickness of material and appliance layout to make it far more functional.”

When selecting appliances, opt for small varieties with panel fronts. A slimmer dishwasher can save precious storage space, and countertop appliances that can be stowed away will reduce visual clutter.

How to Organize a Galley Kitchen

In any small space, organization is key. To make the most of the galley kitchen’s tiny footprint, opt for as much vertical storage as possible, utilizing cabinets above and below the countertops.

Open shelving units can also visually expand a space. However, make sure they’re used sparingly and kept uncluttered so they don’t accidentally make the space look more hectic.

And stow items intentionally and efficiently say, organizing your kitchen units into work and storage sides. “I would keep most if not all appliances on one wall, and a large amount of storage and workable space on the other,” Lubin says.

How to Decorate a Galley Kitchen

Because galley kitchens have such small footprints, you’ll need to decorate creatively. Lubin says her company likes to “use antique mirror cabinet fronts and lighter cabinetry color to make the space feels larger.”

Roger Higgins, a designer at R. Higgins Interiors, tells House Beautiful using “a mirrored backsplash behind areas except the cooktop” visually opens up the space. Higgins adds painting cabinets and walls the same color as the walls will maximize your space.

To bring in more depth and personality, you can always decorate the ceiling! Sandra Drews Lucas, an interior designer and founding partner of Lucas/Eilers Design Associates, tells Southern Living:“Wallpapering the ceiling can draw your eye away from the narrowness of the galley.”

Throwing a kitchen rug and decorations can bring tons of visual interest and character to a galley kitchen, while still keeping it uncluttered and sleek.

  • At 28 inches by 28 inches, it will fit almost all mainstream brands
  • It has 16 inches of height to fit a laundry basket underneath
  • Rubber feet on bottom reduce problems with machines “walking” while operating
  • Steel construction can support up to 700 pounds, enough to handle a 300-pound washing machine filled with water and laundry
  • Built-in drainage pan and hose to catch any leaks

Cons

  • Underneath storage is an open shelf, not a drawer

If you love organization as much as we do, you probably label everything from the pasta in your pantry to the Q-Tips in your bathroom. But did you know you don’t need an expensive label maker to craft beautiful, clear labels?

In a viral TikTok amassing more than 602,000 views, cleaning influencer Melissa Pateras (@melissadilkespateras) makes the “easiest, cheapest” labels in just a couple of minutes. Here’s how she does it.

How to Print the Paper Labels

In her video, Pateras starts by showing pages of printer paper covered in the names of the items you’d like to label, like “Cotton Balls,” “Soap,” “Pasta” and “Sugar.” The pages appear to have been made in Microsoft Word using regular single spacing and various font types.

Pateras explains in her narration you can “print out what you want on regular paper in any size or font you like.” If you’re looking to save printer ink, Garamond is always a stylish and money-saving choice.

@melissadilkespateras Label hack #cleantok #organize #organizedhome #diy original sound – Laundrytok | Melissa Pateras

How to Make the Clear Tape Labels

Next, according to Pateras, “carefully place the packing tape on each of the words and smooth it out.” (To get the best results out of your packing tape, might we suggest this method of ripping it?)

Once you’ve placed the tape, cut out the taped labels. Pateras says you can make the label “as big or as small as you like, meaning you can cut it as close as you want to the letters.”

Once you’ve made the individual tape labels, “fill the bowl with warm water and place the label in the bowl for about a minute,” she says. At this stage, the labels may curl up that’s completely fine!

To complete the labels, Pateras says, “place your hands in the water and completely rub off the paper using your fingers.” The printer ink will stick to the tape, leaving only a clear, sticky label. Once the paper is completely gone, set the label aside to dry.

How to Place the Clear Tape Labels

Finally, place the tape label onto whatever storage container you desire; it should still be sticky. According to Pateras, it’s OK if the label is still slightly wet when you place it, since it will “allow you to shift it a little if you need to.” And that’s it!

The labels can be used safely in any environment, including the kitchen, bathroom or garage. Better yet, the process is so cheap and easy that you can make as many as your heart desires.

Recently, former NBA star Shaquille O’Neal took to Instagram to share a video of his super-swanky garage. Unsurprisingly, it’s larger-than-life, stylish and totally distinctive. But it’s also remarkably organized, thanks to a series of cabinets, racks, shelves, workbenches and accessories.

Read on to learn Shaq’s all-star storage picks, as well as our tips on how to get the look yourself.

Inside Shaq’s Garage

In the video, Shaq begins by thanking NewAge Products, which provided all his storage equipment.

He says, beaming: “NewAge Products, this is Shaq O’Neal. Let me tell you something: I’ve received a lot of gifts, and the gifts you gave me to hook my garage up, I appreciate you very much. And guess what? Guess what? I got another garage I’m building, but I don’t need no gifts, ’cause I’m going [to] buy ’cause the quality is mwah, mwah, mwah, top choice! I appreciate you guys very much!”

Next, the video pans to showcase the garage itself. Standout features include the New York City skyline wallpaper, glossy swirled floors and bold geometric lights, to say nothing of that giant Shelby F-150. But Shaq’s pride and joy is clearly his workspace on the far side of the garage.

Shaq’s Favorite Storage Solutions

Shaq uses the following products to keep his garage organized. They range in price from approximately $120 for the steel slatwall accessory kit to $900 for the multi-use locker. Note the NewAge Products site says “[p]roduct pricing [and] delivery timelines are determined based on your delivery location.”

How to Get a Sleek Garage Like Shaq

If you’re as enamored with Shaq’s garage as we are, there are a number of ways to achieve a similar look beyond simply buying the same exact cabinets.

As a first step, test out an accent wall. If wallpaper isn’t your thing, you could try something simpler, like bold painted stripes, and still get that geometric-inspired look. Keep the other walls simple, showcasing cement, limewash or even textured paint.

Next, elevate your garage floor. Shaq’s floor appears to utilize paint and epoxy to get the unique swirl pattern. While the patterning may take professional know-how, most DIYers can achieve a single-toned painted, epoxy floor.

Finally, make a version of Shaq’s flashy light fixtures with a combination of showroom and task lighting. For extra oomph, use colored LED bulbs to cover your workspace in ambient blue or purple. With these changes, you, too, can feel like Superman each time you step up to the workbench!

Space-Saver Vacuum Storage Bags Saved My Life While Moving https://www.familyhandyman.com/article/space-saver-bags/ Thu, 17 Aug 2023 15:20:01 +0000 https://www.familyhandyman.com/?p=562091 If you’re moving or swapping out your summer wardrobe for cold-weather clothes, you’ve got to try these space-saver bags.

The post Space-Saver Vacuum Storage Bags Saved My Life While Moving appeared first on Family Handyman.

]]>
Whether you bought new bedding and need to stow away your old comforter, or youre getting ready to move like I am, space-saver bags are going to be your best friend.

While I planned on donating items from my closet that I no longer wear before the big move, I was still left with more clothes to move than I planned on. Plus, packing clothes for a move can be tricky. Putting clothes into boxes doesnt seem like the most economical choice, and zip-tying hangers together (regrettably, Ive done this before) inevitably results in a mess. Space-saver bags, however, will do what the name suggests and save you space before, during and after your move. They’ll also protect your clothes and other textiles in an airtight, waterproof bag. My only regret is that I didnt buy more.

What are space-saver bags?

Space Saver Bags

Space-saver bags are vacuum storage bags that reduce the volume of your clothes, towels, bedding and more by 80% while keeping them protected in an airtight and watertight seal. They save space while packing for a move and putting away items in closet storage, and they also maximize luggage space while traveling. Theyre especially useful for shrinking large, bulky fabrics, like comforters, quilts, coats and towels.

These bags come in a range of sizes, from small bags for traveling to medium and large bags for storing clothes to jumbo bags for bedding and pillows. There are even hanging bags if youre determined to move clothes while keeping them on the hanger or just want to compress a portion of your wardrobe thats out of season. Whatever size option you decide to go with, your space-saving purchase comes with everything you need to do the job: the bags, zippers to seal the bags and a hand pump to remove the air once the bags are packed and sealed.

$34.99 at Amazon

How to Use Space-Saver Bags

When it comes to using space-saver bags, all you have to do is spread out the bag, open the zip fastener and pack the bag with whatever textiles you want to store. After the bag is packed to the stop line, firmly slide the zipper along the edge of the bag to seal it, twist off the cap on the bag and place the pump (or a vacuum hose) over the sealing valve to remove air. Once all the air is removed, quickly twist the cap back onto the valve to keep air from leaking to create an airtight seal.

Having used another brand of vacuum storage bags once previously, I was surprised by how much better the quality is of this specific one from Amazon. The plastic is thick, so you dont have to worry about puncturing the bag while filling, and the zipper seal at the top of the bag feels sturdy and secure.

I used the jumbo-size bags, and I was able to fit two whole baskets of laundry (and then some) into one bag! I used another bag to pack a thick comforter, and I still had leftover room for sheets. My favorite part was watching the air leave the bag and the textiles literally shrink before my eyestalk about satisfying. What I was able to fit in just one jumbo bag would have filled a medium- to large-size moving box. I also like that I can organize separate clothes based on season and style per bag, and see whats in each bag because theyre clear.

I plan to use the other bags to pack throw pillows, as those are other awkward items to box up and often get dirty during a move if left unprotected. If youre someone who switches out throw pillows and blankets for different holidays and seasons, the space-saver bags are ideal for keeping seasonal textiles safe and out of the way while not in use.

While my six-pack of jumbo space-saver bags did come with a hand pump to remove the air, the bags were so large that it was much easier and faster to use a vacuum hose to suck out all the air. It also seems like a vacuum removes air from the corners and edges of the bag more efficiently than the hand pump. If youre working with smaller space-saver bags or dont have access to a vacuum cleaner with a hose attachment, then the pump works just fine.

The Best Amazon User Reviews

With more than 47,000 five-star ratings on Amazon, the jumbo space-saver bags are in high demand. Heres what buyers had to say about the vacuum storage bags.

I hate having to check a bag for flights, so I like to travel with a carry-on suitcase, which can be a little tricky when the weather is colder,” writes five-star reviewer, Chloe Rock. Anyway, I ended up buying these to help flatten my clothes. I’ve tried the rolling technique and the storage cubes, but I was trying to up my packing game. Without the storage bags, I had an overflowing half-suitcase. Once I put my stuff in the bags (I bought the small bags), I had room for even more stuff on top!”

Verified purchaser, Sarah Wuest, says, These things are HUGE. I was able to fit a comforter and a sheet set in one. In another I packed all of our summer stuffswimsuits, coverups and like 10 beach towels. They haven’t lost any suction yet, and they’ve allowed us a LOT more space in our hall closet. I think next time I’ll buy one size smaller.

“Im moving in a few months but packing little by little, staring with bedding and clothes I dont use daily. Ive used four bags over the last week and, so far, they have stayed flat/not leaking,” shares Mary Meyers, another five-star reviewer. “I spent more money on these than I wanted to, but see no point in spending less on an inferior product. Ive tried other brands and these are the best in my experience.”

Where to Buy Space-Saver Bags

Space Saver Bags

Space-saver bags range in price from about $20 to $50, depending on what size option you go with and how many bags are included. A six-pack of jumbo-size space-saver bags retails on Amazon for just $25. Theres a variety pack of space-saver bags that include a range of sizes if youre not sure what size you might need, or you want to vacuum back everything from washcloths to a king-size comforter.

If youre moving, these are a must-have for clothes, linens and bedding. I cannot stress enough how much packing space they saved me while protecting my beloved Sunday Citizen comforter from the elementsand the grime of the moving truck.

garage ceiling shelf

Garage Ceiling Shelves

Tuck medium and lightweight stuff onto these DIY garage ceiling storage shelves. The shelves are designed to fit into that unused space above the garage doors (you need 16 inches of clearance to fit a shelf and standard 12-1/2 inch high plastic bins). However, you can adjust the shelf height and put them anywhere. The only limitation is weight. We designed this 4 x 6-foot shelf to hold about 160 lbs., a load that typical ceiling framing can safely support. It’s best to save the shelf for deep storage, using labeled bins with lids, because you’ll need a stepladder to reach stuff.

First, find which way the joists run, then plan to hang one shelf support from three adjacent joists. Our joists are 24-inches apart; if yours are spaced at 16-inches, skip one intermediate joist. We built ours to hold plastic bins, but if you put loose stuff up there, add 1×4 sides to keep things from falling off. Assemble the 2x4s as shown , using five-inch corner braces and 1/4-inch x 1-inch hex head lag screws (drill pilot holes first).

Now attach the corner braces on both ends of a shelf support to the center of a joist/truss by drilling pilot holes and using 1/4-inch x 2-inch hex head lag screws. The only challenge is finding the center of joists through a drywall ceiling (if your ceiling is finished) to attach the shelf supports. Tap a small nail through the drywall until you locate both edges of the joist. Measure to find the center of the adjacent joists, and measure to keep the three supports in alignment with one another. Finish the shelf unit by attaching a 3/8-inch x 4-foot x 6-foot plywood floor. You should also check out how to DIY garage cabinets to make more space for storage.

8 Decluttering Tips for Hoarders https://www.familyhandyman.com/article/decluttering-tips-for-hoarders/ Mon, 26 Jun 2023 19:52:27 +0000 When signs of hoarding appear, use these tips to get things under control before full-scale hoarding takes over.

The post 8 Decluttering Tips for Hoarders appeared first on Family Handyman.

]]>
The term “hoarder” usually comes with images of something like what my grandma’s house looked like stuff piled waist-high, with only a path wide enough to walk through the house. There’s nowhere to sit or do anything enjoyable, with barely enough room to move.

However, there are stages of hoarding. What some may think of as innocent clutter can lead to a much more overloaded and stressful environment.

“Both the difficulty letting go of objects and the inability to resist acquiring new items is often due to anxiety or guilt about missed opportunities that the objects represent to that person,” says Gail Steketee, Ph.D., an emerita member of the Scientific Advisory Board of the International Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) Foundation. “Unfortunately, that leads to clutter which can also provoke discomfort and feeling overwhelmed.”

If your home is getting stuffed with stuff, try these expert decluttering tips for hoarders to take back your space.

What Is Hoarding?

According to Tina Judge, a nurse practitioner and clinical specialist in psychiatry at Momentum Behavioral Health, “Hoarding refers to a psychological disorder characterized by persistent difficulty discarding or parting with possessions, regardless of their actual value.

“Individuals who hoard typically accumulate an excessive number of items over time, leading to clutter and disorganization in their living spaces,”

What Are the Stages of Hoarding?

“The five stages of hoarding are a conceptual framework that describes the progression and severity of hoarding behaviors,” Judge says. “It is important to note that not all individuals with hoarding tendencies will go through each stage, and the progression can vary from person to person.”

Judge describes the stages this way:

  • Stage 1: Acquisition. Individuals begin acquiring possessions excessively. They may collect items they believe are valuable, useful or sentimental.
  • Stage 2: Clutter. As possessions accumulate, clutter may interfere with the normal use of rooms, causing difficulties with cleaning, organizing and finding necessary items.
  • Stage 3: Difficulty discarding.Individuals experience increased difficulty discarding possessions and may develop strong emotional attachments to items. They fear they might need them in the future, or they’ll regret getting rid of them.
  • Stage 4: Disorganization and impairment. Clutter and disorganization become severe, making navigating or using living spaces as intended challenging. The excessive accumulation of possessions may cause health and safety hazards.
  • Stage 5: Isolation and functional decline. Excessive clutter and disorganization often lead to social isolation, strained relationships and withdrawal from activities. Living conditions may deteriorate to the point where essential utilities are compromised.

If you’re beginning to hoard, use the following tips to take back control of your home.

Seek Help

“You need to be courageous and willing to seek help not just counseling to help understand and overcome why you feel the need to keep everything but also someone to come alongside you and dig into the mess,” says Carrie Ypma, expert organizer and founder of Clutter Keeper.

Getting a friend, a family member or a professional organizer to help you declutter will make you more accountable so you can make great strides and clear the clutter faster.”

Make a List

“Make a list of all the areas you want to clean and organize,” Ypma says. “As you complete each area or space, check it off the list and celebrate. It’s incredibly rewarding to see how far you’ve come and to cross things off your list,”

Try a Simple Decluttering Method

Clutter can be overwhelming, so choosing an easy decluttering method is best for beginner hoarders. One of the easiest and quickest ways to declutter is with the “Four-Box-Method.” This simplifies the process by categorizing items according to what action you plan to take.

The first box is for things you want to keep, the second for items that go back to where they belong, the third for items you want to donate, and the fourth for trash. For anyone struggling to figure out how to deal with their clutter, this is a great start.

Start With Easy Tasks

Beginning with easy tasks is one of the best tips. “Start small,” Ypma says. “If you try to go after the entire mess at one time, you’ll likely get so overwhelmed that you quit.”

Start with something as simple as collecting and getting rid of all the trash. Then grab your donation box and add any items you find easy to part with. Though it’s not tackling all the clutter, it will clear up much-needed space and motivate you to do more.

Find Ways to Make Decluttering Fun

“Play some music, have snacks, get a friend to help and make it fun rather than a boring chore that you dread,” Ypma says. Anytime you take on a sizable project, you’re more likely to do it if you make the process enjoyable.

Use a Timer

Pick one room or even one small area within a room, set a timer and tackle that piece of the mess,” Ypma says. “When the timer is done, keep going if you feel motivated, or stop for the day and start again tomorrow,”

Using a timer can prevent “decluttering paralysis,” Ypma says. It springs you into action and stops you from overthinking.

Take Clutter Out as Soon as Possible

Take trash and donation boxes out of the house as soon as possible so you’re not tempted to take a second look at the items. Out of sight means out of mind. Plus, you’ll have a fresh, more organized home rather than a bunch of boxes in the way.

How to Prevent Future Hoarding?

“Get in the habit of carving out 15 to 30 minutes every day to tidy up and put things back where they belong,” Ypma says. She also advises keeping trash cans and/or recycling bins in every room to make getting rid of clutter easier.

“You can also keep a ‘donate’ box in your closet to put things you’re ready to part with,” she says. “When the box is full, take it to a local nonprofit organization where it can find a new home.”

Organize Your Space with Customizable NewAge Products Garage Cabinets – We Tried It! https://www.familyhandyman.com/article/newage-garage-cabinet-review/ Tue, 23 May 2023 20:34:09 +0000 https://www.familyhandyman.com/?p=542404 NewAge garage cabinets are considered the gold standard when it comes to garage storage solutions. But do they really hold up to the hype?

The post Organize Your Space with Customizable NewAge Products Garage Cabinets – We Tried It! appeared first on Family Handyman.

Fh We Tried It 3 2 Garage Storage

I love organization. To me, nothing is more satisfying than when everything has a place. So to absolutely no one’s shock, my cluttered and disorganized garage drove me bonkers. Dumbbells, golf clubs and way too many power tools clogged up every nook and cranny of my boyfriend and Is two-car garage (which zero cars were in, I may add).

Enter the NewAge garage cabinets. These customizable storage solutions werent new to me. In fact, my boyfriends brother, Wil Myers, has the 14-piece storage system in his second garage, which he has aptly dubbed “The Clubhouse.” I figured if it was good enough for a tenured MLB player, it was probably good enough for me (on a smaller scale).

What are NewAge garage cabinets?

Thumbnail Img 2082 Caroline Lubinsky Customizable Newage Garage Cabinets

The NewAge garage cabinets are customizable storage solutions for your garage (or basement, were not policing where you put it). You can choose from a wide variety of sizes, configurations and dimensions. And if you decide you want more storage space in the future, you can simply purchase additional NewAge cabinets, as they can be added with compatible connector pieces.

Choosing the Right Set Up for You

I recommend measuring your garage or space prior to choosing a NewAge garage cabinet online. Youll need to take into account the height of your ceiling, the length of your garage and any protruding, immovable garage items (for me, this was our hot water heater and hose bibb).

Armed with these measurements (and an idea of what you want to store), choose a configuration that best fits your space. For reference, we chose the six-piece set, which measures 108 inches by 77 inches.

NewAge Garage Cabinet Features

The NewAge garage cabinets are particularly appealing because much like a new car, you can pick and choose the extras/add-ons youre willing to pay for. Some of the configurations have worktops made of bamboo while others have a more expensive stainless steel finish. Need extra light in your garage? Some of the cabinets have built-in LED lighting, ideal for late-night projects. And if you have tons of tools to store, consider adding on the slatwall, rollable tool drawer or the pull out cabinets to your set.

In our particular set, we picked the rollable tool drawer, removable metal clothing rod and multiple removable shelves (which can hold up to 100 pounds a piece!).

How I Tested It

Thumbnail Img 2094 Caroline Lubinsky Customizable Newage Garage Cabinets

As youd expect, the NewAge cabinets arrived by freight, which means a giant truck came and dropped it off at my house. Pro tip: Make sure someone is home to sign for it (besides the dog), as it is a requirement for delivery.

The delivery driver wheeled his pallet jack into the garage and plopped the tightly wrapped cabinets down in the corner. Dont be alarmed if your cabinets initially look like one giant refrigerator box. NewAge packages their products so incredibly well that they somehow made a cabinet set look small.

You know what isnt small? The amount of cardboard, styrofoam and plastic I had in my garage after unboxing the cabinets. Did I mention NewAge is REALLY freaking serious about your items arriving unscathed? There wasnt a single dent, scratch or nick on any of the components (which is almost unheard of for a package of this size).

Assembly

After making a trip to the recycling center near my house, it was time to begin assembling. For reference, it took my boyfriend and I (two able-bodied adults) around four hours to unbox and put everything together. I highly recommend roping a friend, family member or your partner into helping, because there are times when assembly (and unboxing) isnt possible with just one person.

The actual directions themselves were easy to follow. NewAge provides a QR code to scan to view the directions (or watch assembly videos if youre a visual learner). Most of the process is self-explanatory: Youll screw on wheels and leveling feet, then attach the connector pieces on the side, which hold the worktop and keep the two smaller cabinets together.

In the set we chose, there are also two floating cabinets, which can be mounted to the wall or connected to the top of the large cabinets with connector pieces. We opted to use the connector pieces in case we want to move the set in the future.

None of the process is groundbreaking or extremely hard to do, but it is a time-consuming projectI wont lie about that. However, with a little elbow grease (and a trusty ratchet), youll have your own set assembled in a couple hours.

Warranty and Construction

Thumbnail Img 2072 Caroline Lubinsky Customizable Newage Garage Cabinets

You may feel hesitant to spend a few thousand bucks on garage cabinets, but theres one big reason why I think its worth it: NewAge provides a limited lifetime warranty. Additionally, all of their cabinets are made with 18- or 24-gauge steel, which are heavy-duty materials that resist corrosion. Translation? Youll have these cabinets for years to come without the threat of rust.

I was also impressed with the weight capacity of the lockers that flank either side. The particular set I chose holds up to 800 pounds, but options in the Pro collection can handle up to 1,000 pounds. This means you can easily store your battery-powered string trimmer, every drill bit known to mankind and even your golf clubs you spent too much money on in just one locker.

Pros

  • Customizable shelves, hangers and cabinet pulls
  • More pieces can be purchased to expand the cabinets
  • Constructed of 18- or 24-gauge steel
  • Financing is available
  • Cabinets lock
  • Lockers can hold up to 800 pounds
  • Tool cabinet has wheels for easy mobility
  • Limited lifetime warranty
  • Well-packagedarrived without any dents or scratches

Cons

  • Expensive due to quality construction
  • Installation requires two able-bodied people
  • Time-consuming to put together

FAQ

Thumbnail Img 2100 Caroline Lubinsky Customizable Newage Garage Cabinets

What is the difference between kitchen cabinets and garage cabinets?

Kitchen cabinets are made to hold lighter items, and may not be as durable as their high-quality garage counterparts. Using kitchen cabinets in a garage isnt recommended, due to potential issues with moisture and varying temperatures.

What type of cabinet is best for a garage?

Youll want to choose cabinets made of durable materials, especially if you plan to store weighty items like power tools. I recommend cabinets made of steel or aluminum, as theyll have the most longevity. Plastic cabinets work in a pinch, but they arent going to last for eons.

Final Verdict

If youre looking for high-quality garage cabinets youll likely have for the rest of your life, you cant beat the ones from NewAge. I love the customizable aspect of these cabinets, as they can be configured to suit almost any setup or preference.

Store Cleaning Supplies in a Single Spot

No matter what cleaning task is at hand, storing all of your cleaning gear in one location makes it easier to start. Ideally, store your cleaning supplies on the main floor. Look for space in a utility closet or kitchen and/or bathroom cupboards. Your main floor laundry room is another terrific option.

If the main floor isn’t possible, the basement is the next-best choice. Look for a spot with room for shelves, hooks and some floor space. If you can carve out a spot near a sink, it will be easier to fill and dump buckets of water and wash your gear when you finish cleaning.

If you live in a temperate climate, consider in a cabinet in your garageto keep supplies protected from dirt, insects and mice.

Whatever location you choose, be sure to keep everything out of the reach of children and pets.

Fit one vertical support to the bottom brace, then position the second vertical support on top and flush with the other end of the bottom brace. Fasten the parts together at the bottom with wood glue and trim screws.
