Instead of an expensive, labor-intensive formal path, save money and time with one of these casual garden paths. These walkway ideas will blend in better and will look like theyve been in your garden forever.

Required Tools for these Walkway Ideas

Have the necessary tools for thisDIY projectlined up before you startyoull save time and frustration.

Mulch and Gravel Garden Paths

This windinggravel pathreflects the informality and ease ofmaintenance of the garden. Mulch and gravel are the cheapest pathway materials you can buy for rock walkways, and they make construction simple, too, making them two of our favorite walkway ideas. All you have to do is remove the sod, roll out landscape fabric and spread the mulch or gravel.

Mulch and gravel paths can be meandering, wood chipcovered trails or carefully planned designs, and they range from casual to formal depending on the design and edging material. You can choose from a wide variety of loose materials including coarse bark, decorative mulch, washed stones and crushed gravel or shells.

Mulch garden path

As stated above, the three commontypes of mulchsuitable for garden paths are wood chips, cocoa bean and cypress bark. Since these path materials are lighter than stone, theyre easier to haul and spread. Mulch is also a bit cheaper than gravel or stone pebbles. Remember, though, that organic paths decompose over time, so youll have to rejuvenate them every two to five years with new material. Also, dont use bark, wood chips or mulch for paths that run through areas with poor drainage or that are wet. Itll lead to a soggy path.

Youll find bags of mulch at home centers, but for the best selection of organic materials for a path, check your local nursery or landscape supplier. Depending on how big your path is, it may be cheaper to have bulk material delivered than to buy bags. Plan on a 3-in.-deep layer of mulch about 3 ft. wide as an alternative to grass. Call the public works department at your city hall or check with localtree trimmingservices. They often have piles of wood chips or mulch that are free for the hauling.

Gravel walkways

Several types of inexpensive landscaping gravel are available for paths. Common types are: crushed gravel, crushed limestone and pea rock. For a path thats more formal or longer lasting than a mulch path, consider washed gravel, crushed stone or crushed shells. These materials last indefinitely and only need occasional weeding to look their best. If you want to run a wheelbarrow or lawn mower along the path, choose crushed stone rather than smooth pebbles. The jagged edges of crushed stone lock together to form a firm surface. Crushed stone is also less likely to get kicked out into the yard.

Gravel for paths is sold by type and size. Smaller stones, averaging under 1/2 in., are best for paths because they offer more comfort underfoot and pack together better. Visit your local nursery or landscape supply specialist to see whats available in your area. Gravel is usually sold by the ton. Measure the length and width of the path. Take these measurements to the supplier and ask for help to figure out the quantity of gravel you need. Unless your path is very short, it usually makes sense to have the material delivered. Gravel for a path 3 in. deep and 3 ft. wide will cost about the same as mulch.

Gravel paths do have a few limitations, though. The stones can get tracked into the house, so dont use them near entries. And gravel paths are a bad choice in areas where you have to shovel snow off them. The gravel can end up in your lawn orflower beds.

Tips for making mulch and gravel garden paths

  • Rent a gas-poweredsod cuttertoremove grassif the path is long. For short paths, use a garden spade to slice off the sod.
  • Set edging so it ends up about an inch above the fill material.
  • Use a spacer stick cut to the width of the garden path as a guide when you set the edging or border. You wont have to keep pulling out the tape measure to make sure the edges run parallel.
  • Cover the soil with landscape fabric todeter weedsand prevent the fill material from mixing with the soil. Dont use plastic. Itll catch water and create a soggy path.
  • Have gravel delivered, especially if you need more than a half ton.
  • If you want a path thats firm enough to roll a wheelbarrow on, use crushed stone and tamp it after leveling it. (Pea rock or other rounded stone wont compact.) Use a hand tamper for short paths. Rent a vibrating-plate tamper for long paths.

Garden Path Borders and Edging Ideas

metal edging on a gravel path

Gravel or mulch paths require some type of edging to keep the material from spreading out onto your lawn or flower bed. You can also add a border or an edge as a design element. Here are some common types of edging you can use for walkway landscaping:

  • Plasticlandscape edgingis cheap. And its fast and easy to install. If you object to the look of the rounded top edge, hide it with a border of plants.
  • Steel or aluminum edging forms a crisp edge that gives the path a neat appearance. It costs more than plastic, though, and is less forgiving on sloped terrain. It also keeps gravel or mulch from overflowing into the yard or garden.
  • Brick, stone or paver borders are attractive and versatile, but theyre more expensive and a lot more work to install.
  • Concrete edging is less expensive than brick or stone but has the same advantages. Newer types that look like random pieces of tumbled stone are a great lower-cost alternative to a real stone border.
  • Landscape timbers are an economical alternative to stone or brick borders. Theyre especially useful for building shallow steps on gradually sloping terrain.

Stone Paths

Stepping-stonesare the fastest, easiest way to build a path, and another one of our favorite walkway ideas. Theres very little digging involved. And although the stone is heavy, a little goes a long way. Since theres distance between the stones, you dont have to worry about leveling them with one another. Stepping-stone paths also cost less because youll cover more distance with less stone. Stones that are flat and about 18 in. across and 2 in. thick are ideal. Check your local landscape supplier or quarry to see whats available. If youre building a short stepping-stone path, you can usually pick the stones you want from the pallet or pile of stones on hand at the supplier. For longer paths, ask for help to figure out the quantity and have the stone delivered. If youre lucky enough to live in an area with naturally occurring outcroppings of stone, you may find stepping-stones free for the hauling.

You can also make attractive stepping-stone paths using 12-in. square or round concrete patio blocks. These are available in a wide selection of colors and textures from home centers, landscape suppliers and masonry dealers. Search online for patio blocks to see the variety.

Stepping-Stone Path

How to build a stone path

  • Arrange stones so the distance from the center of one to the center of the next one is 20 to 24 in.
  • Set the stones in place and cut around them with a spade or rock saw. Then lift the stone and dig out the grass and a little soil.
  • Spread a 1/2- to 1-in.-thick layer of sand under the stone if you want to make leveling the stones easier. Sand is easier to work with than soil. A 60-lb. bag of sand is enough for about four to six stones.
  • Set the top of the stepping-stones about 1 in. above the soil level. This will give you a dry place to step while still allowing you to run alawn mowerover the path.

Using Ground Cover Plants with Stone Paths

Ground cover attractively fills the space around and between pieces of yard stones such as flagstone. Includingground cover plantsin your garden path makes a stone walkway easier in two ways: First, you can skip the thick, compacted gravel base underneath. That eliminates the backbreaking digging, plus the hauling and compacting of gravel. Without the solid base, the stones will shift and become uneven, but the plants will hide that. The second advantage is that you dont have to spend extra time laying the stones perfectly. The plants will hide wide gaps.

There are quite a fewperennial plantsthat can withstand foot traffic and will grow between stones. Check with your local nursery to see whats available that will grow in your area. Here are some ground cover plants that can tolerate some foot traffic: Creeping Thyme, Blue Star Creeper, Brass Buttons, Creeping Mazus and Sedum.

When it comes to hosting get-togethers, enjoying the backyard is a huge perk. Friends company with autumn leaves falling on the ground, kids playing in the grass and someone grilling food for the crowd can create lasting core memories. Of course, securing the best backyard setup for gatherings isnt always easy. There are a ton of choices when it comes to deck furniture, outdoor grills, fire pits and more.

Luckily, Ive locked down my all-time favorite outdoor fire pit brand: Solo Stove. Ive tested products from various outdoor brands, and I’ve written countless Solo Stove reviews. So far, my favorite smokeless fire pit comes from Solo Stove. Ive spent countless hours testing products from the brand: Fire pits, chairs, patio heaters, you name it. If Solo Stove makes it, Ive (likely) tested it. Heres what you need to know before placing an order.

What is Solo Stove?

Solo Stove is a leading outdoor fire pit brand founded in 2011 by two brothers and a small camp stove. Their mission? To gather family and friends to create good memories. They get it.

Now, the brand has grown to include a variety of smokeless fire pits and pizza ovens, patio furniture, outdoor heaters and outdoor accessories. In addition to the official Solo Stove website, you can find select Solo Stove products on Amazon.

How We Test Solo Stove Products

I have tested over a dozen Solo Stove products in nearly every category, including evergreen, limited-edition and seasonal items. I evaluate each product based on the delivery experience, packaging, assembly, quality, and ease of use. Outfitting your patio or backyard setup with Solo Stove gear can be expensive, so I examine, test and review each product as thoroughly as I can with your hard-earned dollar in mind.

Fire Pits

Fire pits are the bread and butter of Solo Stove and the reason the brand was created. Solo Stove fire pits are a great way to add ambiance and (literal) warmth to your outdoor space, and theyre great for roasting smores and hotdogs, as well as grilling other food items.

When it comes to smokeless fire pits, Solo Stove as a brand is a leading force, creating products that meetand in many cases exceedindustry standards. Each fire pit is made with sturdy, weatherproof 304 stainless steel and designed to funnel smoke upward away instead of outward. Solo Stoves 360-degree Signature Airflow design heats air to burn off smoke, so you dont have to shift around the fire pit to avoid teary eyes and a face full of smoke.

One of our favorite fire pit picks is the Bonfire 2.0, made for the backyard and beyond. In other words, its designed for a permanent or portable fire pit experience. The Solo Stove Bonfire even comes with its own carrying bag, so you can store it safely, load it up, and carry it wherevercamping, tailgating, fall party, you name it. Cleanup is easy, too; the base plate and ash pan are removable, which makes cleaning quick and easy. No special cleaning tools are needed; just lift the base plate to remove the ash pan and dump it.

We also love the Mesa fire pit if youre looking for a smaller, more compact backyard fire experience. It has the same signature stainless steel design as other Solo Stove fire pits (e.g., the Bonfire 2.0), but its miniature and small enough to put on an outdoor table. Getting a fire going only takes a few minutes with the Mesa. Simply place fuel (wood or pellets) into the base of the Mesa, light your fire starter, and youre ready to go!

Pizza Ovens

Did someone say artisan pizza? ThePi Prime is Solo Stoves first gas-only pizza oven, which comes at a price lower than other gas-powered pizza ovens on the market. The Pi Prime pizza oven is quick and easy to fire upsimply hook it up to an external propane tank and turn the control knob on the front to ignite a flame. After the oven preheats, youre ready to launch your Neapolitan pizza creation.

Like most standardoutdoor pizza ovens, the Pi Prime has a 90-second cooking experience, so pizzas cook ultra-fast at super-high temperatures. Once youve nailed launching and turning the pizza without overcooking it, youll be whipping up homemade pies for everyone to enjoy.

If you want to try your hand at wood-fired pizza, theSolo Stove Pi Fire provides the ideal gateway to backyard baking. This portable pizza oven topper fits on top of your existing Solo Stove fire pit. Unliketraditional pizza ovensthat have space for wood at the bottom, the Pi Fire features long legs that elevate it over your smokeless fire pit.

Heaters and Lights

Line your patio with sleek, modern torches like the Mesa Torch, a backyard torchlight that runs on fluid. Its a durable, stainless-steel torch made with the famous Solo Stove design, similar to Mesa’s. The weather-resistant steel is painted a semi-matte black to blend seamlessly into any backyard scene. You can choose between two configurations: tall and short. So, your Mesa Torch can light your fence line or be at eye level when youre sitting around the fire pit.

The Mesa Torch has a giant wick, integrated fuel canister and a bezel that fits the snuff cap perfectly for easy extinguishing. Plus, the torch will keep an oversized flame for up to five hours on a single fill. I like to fill mine with a bug-repelling torch fluid to keep mosquitos at bay during the summer.

If youre looking for something to provide a little more warmth than light, the Solo Stove Tower Patio Heateris a pellet-fueled heater that keeps you warm in colder weather.Like the Solo StoveBonfire 2.0fire pit, it issmokeless. It has about a 10-foot heating radius, so its perfect for small to mid-sized patios during chilly (but not freezing) temperatures.

The Tower Patio Heaters hopper box holds about 25 pounds of pellets, and a full hopper box should produce about three hours of warmth. Its perfect if you want a patio heater that doesnt use propane. Pellets are generally easier to store and lighter in weight than firewood. Theyre also typically less expensive than propane and dont pose the same combustion risks as propane tanks.

Furniture

Once your fire pit area is ready to go, youll need seating to kick back and enjoy the crackling flames. Solo Stove is one step ahead. Its sister brand, TerraFlame, has a line of weatherproof outdoor furniture, including the1903 Adirondack modern chair. It combines the classic, timeless design of an Adirondack with new, lightweight outdoor materials. The chair is made of an eco-friendly composite made partially from recycled plastics.

While the chairs materials are resistant to corrosion, the chair is also less prone to chipping and peeling than a chair made of wood. With this Solo Stove chair, you wont have to worry about snagging clothes or blankets on splinters.

Terra Flame recently released new patio furniture, including coffee tables, loveseats and more. Were currently assembling and testing the new furniture for review.

FAQ

What is the point of a Solo Stove?

Solo Stove fire pits are designed to promote airflow, which creates a more efficient burn with less smoke. They are also portable, so you can sit around the fire anywhere, and help contain the mess (and sometimes unpredictable nature) of a traditional backyard bonfire.

Can a Solo Stove be used on a deck?

Solo Stove fire pits can be used on a wood deck but this requires careful attention. If the fire pit is not properly elevated and insulated or if its misused, the deck can be charred or caught on fire.

You should never leave your Solo Stove fire pit (or any fire pit) unattended on a combustible surface, even while cooling down.

Do Solo Stoves get hot on the outside?

Yes! The outside of Solo Stove fire pits gets very hot, so please be cautious.

Can Solo Stove be used indoors?

You should never use a Solo Stove fire pit indoors, not even theMesa. It is for outdoor use only, so please do not try to use it indoors at your kitchen table. You can, however, use it on outdoor dining tables and end tables.

TerraFlames Smores Bowl uses smoke-free gel fuel and can be used indoors on a table or counter for easy, inside marshmallow roasting.

Why You Should Trust Us

Family Handyman Shopping Editor Mary Henn is an expert in outdoor trends. For almost two years, shes been tracking and testing Solo Stove products through her Solo Stove review series, which is continuously expanding to include various products from the brand.

Shes spent hours extensively testing everything from the brands fire pits to pizza ovens, backyard heaters, patio furniture and more. While Solo Stove is known for churning out quality backyard and fire pit products, Mary tests every product she can get her hands on to ensure that the brands quality lives up to the hype. That way, you can make consumer-informed decisions based on real-life testing before you buy.

The Bottom Line

If youre looking for a well-made, stainless steel backyard fire pit, Solo Stoves got it. The brand manufactures quality products and thoughtful accessories like smores kits, popcorn makers, gloves and so much more. Like many top-tier fire pit brands, some of their products are pricey, but you pay for a fire pit that will be the center of backyard family gatherings for years to come.

Solo Stoves Mesa fire pit starts at $80, while its smallest ground fire pit, the Ranger, retails for $200. Our favorite, the best-selling Bonfire fire pit, sells for $250, while the brands largest fire pit, the Canyon, is $700. Best of all, many Solo Stove accessories are available to elevate your backyard fire pit experience, making Solo Stove unique. The brand offers free standard shipping with a purchase of $99 or more and frequently runs sales and deals sitewide.

Best Overall

Sun Home Luminar 2-Person Full-Spectrum Infrared Sauna

Pros:

  • Full-spectrum infrared technology provides therapeutic benefits without feeling overheated
  • Durable aluminum exterior and heat-treated, cedar wood interior
  • Bluetooth connectivity with built-in speakers
  • Chromotherapy, color-changing LED lighting
  • Mobile-app-enabled control system
  • Safe EMF/ELF shielding technology
  • Optional installation (for added fee)
  • Amazing and quick customer service

Cons:

  • Sauna roof corners are very sharp, resulting in the tearing of the protective cover (a known issue that they are currently working to resolve)

Shopping editor Nancy Snyder tested the Sun Home Saunas Luminar, a two-person, full-spectrum infrared sauna. It measures 57 inches wide by 51.5 inches deep by 82.7 inches high. Its more than spacious enough to comfortably accommodate two people (or, if you prefer the extra space, just yourself), Nancy says.

Fhma24 Sun Home Saunas Ancy Snyder 07 Ssedit

This sauna features bench seating and a Bluetooth surround sound system, along with impressive features like a mobile-app-enabled control system to adjust the sauna settings from your phone. Other features include an oxygen ionizer to purify the air, cup holders, a towel rack, a tablet holder and a magazine rack. The powerful sauna has six full-spectrum infrared heaters, medical-grade chromotherapy LED lighting, and ultra-low EMF/ELF shielding for the industry’s lowest and safest electromagnetic field exposure.

After ordering the sauna, Nancy opted for Sun Home Saunas third-party installation crew, Pure Install, to come out and assist with installation. This runs about $1,100 to $1,300 for the two-person Luminar model.

Nancy says the two-person team did an impeccable job, assembling the sauna in roughly two hours and discarding the pallets and trash when they left. However, she realized later that the Luminar 2-Person Sauna requires a dedicated 240-volt, 20-amp GFCI (Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter), which a licensed electrician must install.

The required electrical wiring ended up costing Nancy an additional $1,350. But it was all worth it. I could easily see adding this to my daily routine,” she says. “Not only did I feel so much better after one session, but research suggests that infrared saunas may have a number of health benefits when used long-term. I was overly impressed with the experience.

A gazebo can instantly transform your backyard scene and boost your resale value. Plus, they offer practical advantages, like additional shade and shelter from the rain. From barbecues to birthday parties, the right gazebo provides a designated, covered area for gatherings.

If youve shopped for gazebos, you know there are endless options when it comes to materials, shape and size. Generally, if you want a more permanent fixture, you should go with a metal or wooden gazebo. If you want something more portable and can move from one spot in the yard to another, a soft-top gazebo might be the way to go (theyre also typically more affordable).

We selected this Sunjoy Hardtop Octagon Gazebo to install as a permanent fixture in our backyard. Below is our full review of the Sunjoy Gazebo, from delivery and assembly to product details and more.

What is a Sunjoy Outdoor Hardtop Gazebo?

Sunjoy is an outdoor furniture and gazebo brand founded in 2001. For over 20 years, the brand has manufactured high-quality outdoor products designed to last for years. They offer free delivery on all orders and a 30-day return window from the original delivery date. Sunjoy makes a variety of gazebo styles, including hard-top, soft-top, pop-up, wall-mounted and more. Sunjoy also offers gazebos in various materials, including metal, wood and aluminum.

The Sunjoy Outdoor Hardtop Gazebo we installed in our backyard is made of metal, specifically steel for the roof and galvanized pipe for the legs. It is octagonal and features a double-tiered top for ventilation and wind resistance. The entire structure sports an aesthetic matte black finish. Its perfect for expanding your entertainment area outside and is a permanent structure if you anchor the legs.

Sunjoy Outdoor Hardtop Gazebo Product Features

Here’s a look at some of the standout features, good and bad, you can expect if you choose to purchase this Sunjoy gazebo.

Materials

The Sunjoy Outdoor Hardtop Gazebo features all-steel construction. Specifically, the roof is made of steel, while the legs are made of galvanized pipe. Sunjoy offers similar hard-top gazebos with metal roofs and wooden legs if you want a gazebo that will blend in on top of a deck or other wooden structure.

Fhma24 Sunjoy Outdoor Hard Top Gazebo Mary Henn 03 Ssedit

The steel structure is very sturdy and weather-resistant. The gazebo we tested has faced Midwestern winds, storms and heat, and it still looks as good as new. Anchoring the gazebo legs in the ground helps keep it in place during severe weather, too.

Size

The hard-top octagon gazebo has a diameter of about 15 feet, and its legs measure about 6-1/2 feet tall and 4-1/2 feet apart. The entire structure stands about 11 feet tall and weighs over 500 pounds. It can withstand 50 MPH winds and over 4,000 pounds of snow. Talk about sturdy! Underneath the gazebo, you can easily fit a standard-size picnic table or a few lounge chairs.

Design

The gazebos two-tiered roof allows airflow while shielding off weather by protecting whats underneath it from UV rays and allowing wind to pass through the top. The built-in dual rails let you easily hang mosquito netting or curtains, and the ceiling hook lets you hang suspended lighting. The durable matte black coating is made to withstand sun, rain and snow while providing a modern look.

How We Tested It

Fhma24 Sunjoy Outdoor Hard Top Gazebo Mary Henn 02 Ssedit

The Sunjoy Outdoor Hardtop Gazebo was delivered to our house via semi-truck. It was a pallet delivery, which the drivers dropped in the front yard. We did not have the option of getting it delivered to the backyard, where we wanted it. I recommend contacting Sunjoys customer support team if you order a large, heavy gazebo and want it delivered to a designated area. They might be able to accommodate you. I did not do that, and the delivery weighed over 500 pounds, so I could not move the pallet alone.

I did not anticipate the size and weight of the item, because when I was shopping for a gazebo, I originally had selected a smaller, lighter gazebo from Sunjoy. However, I was sent the larger octagon gazebo instead. After realizing the size of the gazebo, I knew Id need help moving and assembling it.

The instructions recommended a team of five people, which I did not have available. So, I used Thumbtack to find a construction pro to move, assemble and anchor the gazebo in the backyard. Living in the Midwest, I needed to anchor the gazebo, especially since I was having it installed during storm season. I didn’t want to risk strong winds damaging the gazebo or its surroundings.

I took many bids from different construction pros for the project. In my area, the most affordable rate was $1,750 for the entire job. However, the cheaper rate came at an additional, unexpected cost. The job was done poorlyconcrete was thrown onto the fence and left in the yard, and the concrete used to anchor the gazebos posts was laid inconsistently and far above the grass.

That said, the gazebo was moved and assembled quickly, looks level, and is very sturdy. If you have the means, Id recommend hiring vetted pros to assemble and anchor your hard-top gazebo.

Additionally, because the gazebo I was sent was larger than I expected, it did not fit on our patio. So, we had to assemble it adjacent to the patio in a grassy area. We havent entirely decided how to use that space, but we plan to either extend the patio or install some other kind of outdoor flooring and make that an outdoor dining area.

While the installation process was a headache, the product is fantastic. Its a large, sturdy gazebo that has already held up against numerous storms. The dimensions are true to those listed in the product description, and the matte black finish looks sleek and high quality. If youre serious about revamping your outdoor space, Sunjoy consistently produces gazebos of excellent quality.

FAQ

How do you anchor a Sunjoy gazebo to concrete?

Sunjoy gazebos already have holes in their feet so that you can secure them to a concrete surface with a bolt. I opted to pour new concrete around the legs to keep them in place, since I assembled the structure on grass.

What is the lifespan of a gazebo?

Most metal gazebos are resistant to rust thanks to galvanization and/or a weather-resistant coating, and can withstand severe weather. If properly secured, they can last up to 15 years.

What Others Have to Say

The Sunjoy Outdoor Hardtop Gazebo has a five-star rating, and reviewers also include pictures of assembled gazebos. Reviewers note the overall quality of the materials, how carefully parts were packaged for delivery and the speedy delivery times. It took reviewers six hours to a day and a half to fully assemble the gazebo, and all reviewers used at least two people and equipment for assembly. Buyers also commented on the scarce instructions, including very few words but many pictures. Reviewers also recommend using a screw gun with metric sockets to put together the parts.

Sunjoy Outdoor Hardtop Gazebo vs. Sunjoy Outdoor Softtop Gazebo

If you want an octagonal gazebo but are on a tighter budget, consider this Outdoor Softop Gazebo. It has the same shape as the Outdoor Hardtop Gazebo but retails for a fraction of the price. It’s also 11 by 13 feet, so it’s a bit smaller than the 15-by-15-foot gazebo we tested. The Outdoor Softtop Gazebo has high customer ratings and the same durable structure as the hardtop one. It includes a ventilated top, ceiling hook, and mesh netting to keep bugs out.

Sunjoy sells a variety of soft-top gazebos. While metal gazebos are more durable, longer-lasting and weather-resistant, soft-top gazebos also have perks. They are usually easier to assemble and move and are often less permanent. Additionally, soft-top gazebos typically cost much less than their hard-top counterparts.

Final Verdict

If youre looking for a top-notch, hard-top gazebo, then Sunjoy is a great place to start shopping. Sunjoys vast inventory and commitment to crafting high-quality gazebos puts it ahead of the competition. While you may have to consider hiring professional assemblydepending on the size and type of gazebo you buy and how you want it installedyou can count on Sunjoy to deliver on quality. If opting for a hard-top gazebo over a soft-top gazebo, we recommend anchoring it securely to keep it in place.

A Guide to Building a Patio with Ceramic Tile https://www.familyhandyman.com/article/a-guide-to-building-a-patio-with-ceramic-tile/ Tue, 03 Sep 2024 17:35:44 +0000 https://www.familyhandyman.com/?p=633630 Thanks to modern materials, tile is now a durable and long-lasting option for exterior concrete patios–even in cold climates. Here's what you need to know.

The post A Guide to Building a Patio with Ceramic Tile appeared first on Family Handyman.

For about 6,000 years, builders have been using ceramic tile outdoorson buildings, walkways, and even streets. Not only does tile offer a range of colors and designs unmatched by any other material, its also amazingly tough. In places like Italy and Mexico, you can find exterior tile in good condition despite centuries of wear and tear.

You wont find much ancient tile outdoors in cooler climates, though. Tile can take generations of foot traffic, but water that freezes or expands in or under tiles can turn a gorgeous patio into a crumbling mess.

Thats why tile hasnt been used widely outdoors in cold climates: It was just too risky. Over the last several decades, howeveras tile setting and materials have improvedthat risk has diminished.

Six keys to successful outdoor tile setting

  1. Use high-quality materials only. Expensive patio tiles wont necessarily outlast moderately priced tile, but with thin-set, grout, sealer and caulk, you get what you pay for.
  2. Follow the manufacturers instructions. Even the best setting materials wont perform as promised unless you mix and use them as instructed.
  3. Apply tile only to a stable, well-drained slab. A slab with places for puddles or ever-growing cracks is no place for tile.
  4. Allow the tile to expand and contract without cracking by placing expansion joints no more than 16 ft. apart and anywhere the tile meets a vertical surface like steps or the houses foundation.
  5. Dont give water places to enter or hide. That means densely packed and sealed grout joints, caulked expansion joints and no empty pockets in the thin-set.
  6. Dont delay maintenance. If grout cracks or a tile comes loose, replace it before a small problem becomes a big one.

Level the slab

Screed floor leveler over low areas using a 2×4. Check the entire slab for low spots by laying a straight 10-ft. 2×4 on edge; any areas where the gap between the slab and the 2×4 is wider than 1/8 in. must be filled.

Important: Nothing should cover isolation joints or fill expansion joints except caulk. If you get any floor leveler or isolation membrane in the joint, scrape it off with a putty knife after it hardens. Here are the best patio flooring ideas.

A Guide To Building A Patio With Ceramic Tile Fh97apr 01098003

Apply crack isolation membrane

Comb the isolation membrane material over the slab with the notched edge of the trowel and then flatten it out with the trowels straight edge. When combing, hold the trowel consistently at about a 45-degree angle. That way, the notches will evenly distribute the pasty material, giving you a flat, consistent membrane.

A Guide To Building A Patio With Ceramic Tile Fh97apr 01098004

Set the patio tiles in thin-set mortar

Squish patio tiles into thin-set mortar adhesive applied with a 3/4-in. U-notch (rounded-notch) trowel. Twist the tiles back and forth slightly as you force them down. Your goal is complete coveragethat is, the space between the tiles and the membrane below should be completely filled with thin-set (no cavities to hold water and cause trouble). To allow enough space for grout, remove the thin set that wells up between the tiles or into expansion joints with a pencil or screwdriver. Clean thin-set off the surface of tiles with a damp sponge.

A Guide To Building A Patio With Ceramic Tile Fh97apr 01098005

Grout the tiles

Push the grout diagonally across the tiles, holding the grout float at a 45-degree angle. Use a hard rubber float, not one with soft foam backing. Work the grout back and forth in all four directions to pack the joints densely. Then, hold the float at nearly 90 degrees to the tile surface and scrape excess grout off the tile. Remove grout residue with a damp (not dripping-wet) sponge, rinsing it frequently.

Some home centers carry everything youll need for this project. But for the best materials and advice, visit a few tile specialty stores, preferably pro-level suppliers.

The tile you choose must be made from dense materialporous tiles will absorb water and crumble as that water freezes. The tile you buy may be called frost-free, vitreous, impervious or freeze-thaw stable, but whatever the label, make sure its warranted by the manufacturer to withstand freezing.

Chances are, youll need floor leveler, a powder that you mix with water and spread over low spots in the slab. Sometimes called SLC (self-leveling compound), floor leveler is sold under a variety of brand names; just be sure the one you buy is recommended for outdoor use.

An isolation membrane is an elastic barrier that separates the tile from the slab. That way, when the slab cracksas all slabs eventually dothe tiles can float above the cracks without cracking themselves. This protection is limited, of course: Cracks that widen 1/8 in. or so will likely telegraph into the tiles above. Isolation membranes are available as sheets of rubbery fabric that get sandwiched between two layers of thin-set or as pasty trowel-on mixtures, which are easier to apply.

Latex additives make todays thinset mortar adhesives so much better than their predecessors. Modified materialsas in latex modified or polymer modified are less likely to absorb water and more elastic, so they can better withstand movement caused by temperature change or by pockets of ice under the tile. Still, all modified thin-sets are not the same; use one that meets all specifications for outdoor use (the label includes this information).

The same goes for sanded grout; look for an exterior-grade grout. Ask the tile store for recommendations if youre not sure. (The grout may require mixing with a latex liquid instead of water.)

Silicone grout sealer penetrates the grout, making it more resistant to both staining and water absorption.

Choosing the best caulk, for filling expansion joints, is sometimes a compromise between durability and appearance. Urethane caulk, which holds up to foot traffic best, may not be available in a color that matches your grout. Siliconized latex and acrylic latex are often available in more colors and in sanded versions to match the texture of the grout.

A sound old slab

An existing concrete patio or walkway can be tiled as long as water drains off it and any cracks in it are stable and level (one side of the crack shouldnt be higher than the other). Cracks normally widen and narrow slightly with the seasons, but if theyre getting wider year by year, dont tile over them.

If the concrete has sunk to the level of the surrounding soil, youll have to do some grading. Water must not pool on the tiles. So the slab’s surface has to be made flat.

To prepare an existing slab, scrub it clean with a stiff broom and water. Remove any oil or grease stains with a degreaser. If the concrete has a smooth-troweled surface, rent a pressure washer with at least 4,000 psi to clean the slab and roughen its surface. Muriatic acid will also clean and roughen concrete. Finally, fill cracks with caulk (one thats intended for use on masonry) and holes with vinyl or latex patching compound (available at home centers).

A perfect new slab

Pouring a concrete slab is a major project in itself and we wont explain how to do it here. Whether you do it yourself or hire a contractor, here are the requirements for a lasting, tile-ready slab:

  • Patio slabs are typically 3-1/2 in. thick and reinforced with steel mesh (if anything). But because strength and crack resistance are so important for this project, we recommend a slab 5 to 6 in. thick, reinforced with a 2-ft. x 2-ft. grid of 1/2-in. rebar.
  • For good surface drainage, the slab should slope 1/4 in. per running foot. A 16-ft. long slab, for example, would be 4 in. lower on one end than the other.
  • Place isolation or control joints in the slab where theyll coincide with expansion joints in the tile (more on that below).
  • If you hire a contractor to pour the slab, make sure curing compounds arent used. Curing compounds increase the strength of concrete by slowing the curing process, but they also prevent tile-setting materials from bonding well to the slab.
  • The slab should have a broomed finish, not a smooth-troweled surface.
  • Concrete shrinks and gains strength for weeks after its poured. Wait at least four weeks before setting tile on a new slab. And any concrete, new or old, should stay dry for at least three days before you begin tile work.

Exterior ceramic tile details

A new slab should have at least 6-in. of compacted fill and a minimum 5-in. of concrete with rebar, with expansion joints.

A Guide To Building A Patio With Ceramic Tile Fh97apr 01098006

Seal expansion joints

Seal expansion joints with caulk after cleaning them out well (vacuuming them is a quick, thorough method). To make a neat joint, mask the tile along both sides and smooth the caulk with a rounded putty knife. You can round the blade of a plastic putty knife using a utility knife and sandpaper.

Whether youre setting tile on an old or new slab, you must include expansion joints. An expansion joint is a strip of flexible materialin this case, caulkthat lets tile expand and contract with changes in temperature. Heres where to put expansion joints:

  • Anywhere tile meets a vertical surface like steps or the foundation of your house.
  • Over any isolation or control joints in the concrete. Isolation joints are strips of compressible material (isolation strip) in the slab. Control joints are shallow grooves in the concrete.
  • Your patio must have expansion joints at least every 16 ft. (measuring in both directions). For example: A 16 x 16-ft. patio would need expansion joints only along steps or a foundation. A 16 x 20-ft. patio would need one dividing the 20-ft. length. The patio shown here (about 20 x 20 ft.) needed two intersecting joints.

Typically, expansion joints placed 12 ft. apart or less must be at least 3/8 in. wide; joints 12 to 16 ft. apart, 1/2 in. wide. But if you live, say, on the Canadian Prairie, where summer highs and winter lows can differ by more than 100 degrees, add 1/8 in. of width to your expansion joints. NOTE: Also widen expansion joints (or space them closer together) if you plan to use dark-colored tile, which becomes hotter when exposed to sunlight.

A Guide To Building A Patio With Ceramic Tile Fh97apr 01098008

Plan the tile design

Design and build the patio as an extension of the interior rooms in adjoins.

Layout planningdetermining in detail how to position the tilesis one of the most important (and neglected) parts of any tile project. Its a good idea to use graph paper to design and redesign the layout. Here are a few things that make planning for exterior tile different from most interior jobs:

  • Even if the caulk you use to cover the expansion joints closely matches the grout, the expansion joints will be noticeablein part, because theyre usually wider than grout joints. This isnt a problem unless the joint interferes with a symmetrical pattern. Often, the solution to this problem is to create a dummy expansion joint to restore symmetry. Just leave a space as wide as a true expansion joint between the tiles and fill it with caulk.
  • If youre pouring a new slab, choose the tiles and layout first. That way, you can size the slab to eliminate (or at least minimize) cutting tiles and place expansion joints where theyll work with, rather than against, your design.
  • If glass doors or large windows will overlook the patio, it will be more like an extension of your homes interior than an entirely separate space. So as you design your patio, be sure to keep adjacent rooms and colors in mind.
  • Try to choose tiles that are available in a bullnosed version. The rounded edges will nicely finish off the edges of your patio.

Fhma24 Pergolux Sundream S2 Mary Henn 02 Ssedit

Our product tester, Spencer Bland, built this gazebo as a solo project over the course of two days. However, he says, Realistically, this piece needs about two to three able-bodied people to build in a timely manner while ensuring none of the pieces get damaged during the build. Your delivery experience may also vary as the company uses third-party freight companies. I didn’t have the best overall experience, but this seems to be based on the company handling your shipping, Spencer says.

He built the gazebo by himself throughout two 5-hour shifts across two days. The instructions require you to scan a QR code and choose between a video or a PDF version of the instructions. I used both but found them both to be lacking. The Pergolux is quite complex, and the video was rather vague, Spencer says. The PDF instructions did not go into the level of detail needed, which caused spots in the installation process to be repeated a few times.

After the initial pieces were installed, the pairing instructions for the remote and the motor were printed out in a box along with the remote. The remote does not come paired to your system, and you’ll need to run a series of button-pushing steps to ensure the remote works with your system, Spencer adds. This was a hangup for me as I was physically exhausted after building the Pergolux and hoped the remote would just work outright. However, after about 15-20 minutes of trying, I got the remote to pair with the motor and the LED RGB lights, and it was smooth sailing from there.

While this project was not an easy solo build, we wouldn’t expect it to be for such a large piece. I’m happy to have this in my backyard now and am excited for it to be the centerpiece for future backyard parties for years to come, Spencer says.

Sun Home Saunas Full-Spectrum Infrared Luminar Review: Sweat Smarter, Not Harder https://www.familyhandyman.com/article/sun-home-saunas-review/ Tue, 27 Aug 2024 19:34:06 +0000 https://www.familyhandyman.com/?p=630994 I tested the Sun Home Saunas Luminar two-person, full-spectrum infrared sauna. Here's my full review, from setting it up to sweating it out.

The post Sun Home Saunas Full-Spectrum Infrared Luminar Review: Sweat Smarter, Not Harder appeared first on Family Handyman.

]]>
Living in Arizona, I know a thing or two about sweating. In fact, for about four months out of the year, when temps reach triple digits, sweating is pretty much a part of my daily routine. So, when I was offered the chance to test a home sauna in the dead of summer, it felt rather..counterintuitive. Would I need (or even want) to hop into a 140-degree sauna when I practically live in one? But the answer, as I would soon find out, was absolutely.

Infrared saunas offer more than just a fancy sweat session. In fact, unlike traditional saunas that simply heat the air, infrared saunas use infrared light technology to penetrate and heat the body directly. Offering all the benefits of natural sunlightwithout the harmful effects of solar radiationinfrared saunas are growing in popularity due to their touted therapeutic effects, which range from improved energy, mood and immunity to reduced pain and chronic inflammation (just to name a few).

While infrared saunas can vary in heat type (far or full) and size, I was fortunate enough to test Sun Home Saunas Luminar Outdoor Two-Person Sauna, which offers full-spectrum infrared technology (i.e., the benefits of near, mid and far infrared waves) for both me and a lucky guest. Read on to hear about my full experience, from delivery and setup to testing and maintenance.

What is Sun Home Saunas?

Sun Home Saunas’ vast line of products delivers the therapeutic power of thermal and cold therapy right in the comfort of your own home. From saunas and infrared blankets to cold plunges and red light therapy, Sun Home Sauna has something for almost anyone.

The brand offers a variety of infrared saunas that differ by intended use (indoor vs. outdoor), heat type (far-infrared vs. full-spectrum infrared) and size (accommodating one person or up to five people). If you’re not sure where to begin, don’t sweat (get it?)they offer an infrared sauna buying guide to help you with your selection.

For this piece, I tested the Luminar Outdoor 2-Person Full-Spectrum Infrared Sauna. This particular sauna also comes in a five-person model if you have the extra space and cash (which, surprisingly, is not much more). But the two-person modelwhich measures 57 inches wide by 51.5 inches deep by 82.7 inches highis more than spacious enough to comfortably accommodate two people (or, if you prefer the extra space, just yourself).

How We Tested It

Shipping and Installation

After purchasing your Sun Home Sauna, you can choose a delivery date and time that you’ll be around to inspect and sign off on your delivery. Curbside delivery is free, but note that it will arrive in a very large pallet. So it’s recommended to schedule installation for the next day (or soon after) or have a few additional sets of hands to help you disassemble the pallet and move the pieces to a safe spot until you’re ready to install it yourself (a dolly may be necessary for moving the heavier pieces).

Fhma24 Sun Home Saunas Ancy Snyder 11 Ssedit

I opted for Sun Home Saunas’ third-party installation crew, Pure Install, to come out and assist with installation (which runs about $1100-$1300 for the 2-Person Luminar model). If you decide to install it on your own, Sun Home Saunas offers instructions and a helpful installation video. Before they came out, I found a spot in the backyard that would be the most suitable for housing my new sauna (which I’ll admit was both exciting and rather challenging).

Sun Home recommends placing your sauna on an elevated concrete or wood base, preferably protected if your area receives rain or snow. While the sauna does come with a protective cover, I was determined to place it under our back patio to shield it from scorching summer temps and unpredictable monsoon storms. A gazebo would also work nicely, provided you allow for enough overhang (Sun Home recommends leaving four to six inches around the sauna and 20 to 24 inches above the sauna roof).

Their two-person team did an impeccable job, assembling the sauna in roughly two hours and discarding the pallets and any trash when they left. They were also incredibly knowledgeable, offering suggestions on where to position the sauna to have the best view while allowing enough clearance for the door. In the end, we arrived at placing the sauna under the back patio facing out to the pool. While it did now block the kitchen window, this was ultimately the best spot for it (hey, you can’t win ’em all). The installation team also checked in with me about optional accessories and my preferred locations, such as cup holders and magazine and towel racks. All in all, it was a quick and customizable experience!

Given the crew finished in record time and we had a few minutes to chat, I asked if they also disassemble saunas in the event of a move. They said that typically, sauna owners leave their units with the home rather than packing them up and taking them with them (Note to self: Never move). If you’re currently renting or anticipate a move in the near future, you might want to consider one of these portablesaunasinstead. They also told me that they had yet to see one in actionas typically, the homeowner hasn’t had the proper electrical setup prior to the time of installation.

This brings me to the next and final step of my sauna installation journey: The electrical.

Electrical

The Luminar 2-Person Sauna requires a dedicated 240-volt, 20-amp GFCI (Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter), which a licensed electrician must install. Given the sauna was placed near an existing outlet and electrical wiring (i.e., I’m not trying to re-wire electrical across my yard), I thought this would be a quickand affordabletask. But I was wrong. The required electrical wiring cost an additional $1350, and after checking in with Sun Home Saunas and a few additional quotes, I learned this was a fair quote for the labor and parts.

Fhma24 Sun Home Saunas Ancy Snyder 13 Ssedit

Testing

With the electrical up and running, it was finally time to give it a go! I chose a swimsuit and shorts for my attire and, per sauna recommendations, sat on a towel so that my sweat wouldn’t penetrate the cedar bench. While I skimmed the instructions ahead of time, the wall control panel was rather intuitive, allowing you to set your temp and time, connect your iPhone music to Bluetooth, and adjust the lights to your color preference (something you can easily do with the wall panel or remote control). The instructions suggested a 30-minute session at 140 degrees Fahrenheit for your first time, so that’s what I went with.

Fhma24 Sun Home Saunas Ancy Snyder 07 Ssedit

I’ll admit I didn’t know what to expect; I had previously only used steam saunas, which were not my cup of tea. This, on the other hand, was not at all uncomfortable or stuffy. Sure, the heaters did provide solid warmth, but I was amazed to see how much I was sweating in spite of not being so uncomfortably hot. And never once did my phone reach too high of a temp (something that would happen very quickly if I were sitting out under the Arizona sun). As for the 30 minutes, they went by fast (of course, it didn’t hurt having some beautiful lights to look at and some nice tunes to listen to). I truly felt like I was having a deluxe spa experience in my own backyard, and the panoramic views made for not feeling too confined.

Fhma24 Sun Home Saunas Ancy Snyder 10 Ssedit

I anticipated feeling exhausted afterward, similar to how you’d feel after a hot day at the pool. But it was quite the opposite! I felt very refreshed and energized. I actually spent the afternoon having a fairly productive day getting work done. I also looked noticeably less puffy in my face the next day (coincidence?). While the jury is still out on any reported long-term effects, my father, who suffers from chronic inflammation and restless sleep, has reported less pain and more restful nights after testing the sauna for just one week.

Maintenance

One thing to note: Sweat. Drips. Everywhere. That little bench towel could only do so much, as perspiration was pouring off of every single limb and onto the floor. While the wood is anti-bacterial and self-cleaning, the instructions recommend wiping up any perspiration before it penetrates the wood (something that put me a little on edge during my 30-minute sweat session). To prevent stains from developing over the years, they advise wiping down the sauna interior with a damp cloth on a weekly basis. As for the exterior, they recommend treating it the same way you would any piece of high-quality furniture.

A protective cover came with the sauna, and it is recommended to keep it on when not in use. I’ll admit, trying to figure out how to properly put the cover (which is equipped with Velcro and straps) over the sauna was not easy. And the roof corners were rather sharp, ripping the cover as I attempted to maneuver it around. I reached out to Sun Home Saunas about this issue (did I mention they have exceptional customer service?), and they said it was a known problem that they are working to resolve. So, in the interim of sending out their team to install protective corners, they sent out a new cover.

Pros

  • Full-spectrum infrared technology provides therapeutic benefits without feeling overheated
  • Durable aluminum exterior and heat-treated, cedar wood interior
  • Bluetooth speakers
  • Chromotherapy, color-changing LED lighting
  • Mobile-app-enabled control system
  • Safe EMF/ELF shielding technology
  • Optional installation (for added fee)
  • Free shipping
  • 6-year limited lifetime warranty
  • Amazing and quick customer service

Cons

  • Pricey (with installation and electrical setup being potential added expenses)
  • Not easy to move/transport
  • Sauna roof corners are very sharp, resulting in the tearing of the protective cover (a known issue that they are currently working to resolve

FAQ

How hot does the sun home sauna get?

The Luminar temperature can be adjusted to as high as 170F. That being said, unlike traditional saunas (which can get up to 220F), infrared saunas deeply penetrate the body, achieving benefits at lower temperatures (typically 150F). Because the infrared heat resonates at the cellular level, you achieve a deep sweat without feeling overheated.

What is the electrical requirement to run a sun home sauna?

The Luminar 2-Person Sauna requires a dedicated 240-volt, 20-amp GFCI (Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter), which a licensed electrician must install.

As for energy output, Sun Home Saunas says that one session is comparable to operating an electric oven or running a clothes dryer, with a typical electric bill cost of about 30 cents per session.

Final Verdict

I could easily see adding this to my daily routine. Not only did I feel so much better after one session, but research suggests that infrared saunas may have a number of health benefits when used long-term. While the sauna and incurred setup fees are on the pricey side (and I have yet to see how this will truly impact my next electrical bill), I was overly impressed with the experience. Now I just need to look into a cold plunge to truly complete the package (will a swimming pool suffice until then?).

Where to Buy the Sun Home Saunas Luminar

The Luminar 2-Person Infrared Sauna can be purchased directly on Sun Home Saunas’ website for $8,199. The five-person model is available for about a grand more at $9,299.

Pool cleaners can be expensive, and nobody wants to spend hundreds or even thousands of dollars on a product that doesnt work. Thats why weve tested multiple pool vacuums for ourselves, so you can read honest, in-depth reviews from expert product testers before shelling out your hard-earned dollars.

Not only is the Hayward Poolvergnuegen Suction Pool Cleaner Family Handyman-approved, but its also relatively affordable. Whether youre cleaning an above-ground pool or in-ground pool, an automatic pool vacuum is necessary to cut down on the back-breaking work of manually cleaning your pool.

So, if youre shopping for a reasonably-priced pool cleaner, were here to help with a full review of the Hayward Pool Cleaner.

What is the Hayward Pool Cleaner?

The Hayward Poolvergnuegen is a two-wheeled suction cleaner that attaches to your pools pump for hands-off cleaning. Content Director Nicole Doster tested the cleaner in her own pool. She likes to call it the set-it-and-forget-it pool cleaner because of its simplicity.

Of all of the pool cleaners Ive tested, the Hayward Pool Cleaner was the easiest to install and maintain due to its simple design, she says.

The pool cleaner is designed for pool floors and rounded corners. It cleans pools up to 16 by 32 feet in size. While it can handle uneven surfaces, its not intended for steps or walls and does not act like a skimmer.

We Tried It

Hayward Poolvergnuegen Suction Pool Cleaner

A simple yet effective pool cleaner with quiet operation

Pros:

  • Impressive cleaning power; slow and steady, but gets the job done
  • Great for a standard residential pool
  • Doesnt clog, even on small stones and other debris
  • Multiple ways to attach to pools suction port
  • Easy installation and quiet operation
  • Self-adjusting turbine vanes and wheels with deep treads
  • Can maneuver around obstacles and over uneven surfaces
  • Relatively affordable

Cons:

  • Doesnt climb walls or stairs
  • Doesnt serve as a skimmer

Hayward Pool Cleaner Features

We initially decided to review the Hayward Poolvergnuegen because of its simplicity, reliability and affordability. Hayward has been known to make quality pool equipment for more than 80 years, and its 2-wheel automatic pool cleaner is consistent and easy to use.

While the Hayward Pool Cleaner doesnt have as many smart features as some other pool cleaners on the market, it does come pre-programmed with different patterns for the cleaner to rotate and turn as it makes its way around the pool. Those patterns create a steady cleaning routine that cleans an entire pool within hours.

The Hayward Pool Cleaner cleans almost any size pool and has self-adjusting turbine vanes for maximum power and easy debris management. Its two wheels have deep treads, giving it extra traction as it spins and rotates across pool floors. The adjustable roller skirt, treads and programmed steering ensure it climbs walls and maneuvers around obstacles and uneven surfaces. During testing, the cleaner would move six to eight feet across the floor, then pivot its wheels to turn from 90 to 360 degrees; however, that made it harder for the cleaner to target specific areas and not repeatedly clean the same area.

The cleaners hose is easy to put together and customize to the size of your pool. The cleaner comes with 10 two-foot hoses that couple together seamlesslyno messing with long hose lengths or cutting required.

How We Tested It

Content Director Nicole Doster set up, installed and used the Hayward Pool Cleaner in her own backyard pool.

Installation was very simple, which is one of the biggest perks of this product, she says. The hoses fit together in less than 10 minutes, and the cleaner head came fully assembled.

Hayward Pool Cleaner underwater.

The cleaner also has multiple ways to attach the unit to the pools suction port. You can insert a valve adapter nose cone into the pools skimmer, use a vac lock that screws onto a designated suction port, or insert the hose directly into a vac lock.

We already had a vac lock installed, so this was the option we chose, Nicole says.

Our initial tests for the pool cleaner involved placing the Hayward Cleaner side-by-side with our other pool cleaners, Nicole explains. We added four cups of dirt and debrisranging from fine sediment to small pebblesto the bottom of our 24- by 16-foot pool. We measured how quickly and thoroughly the cleaner cleaned up the debris.

The Hayward Pool Cleaner was Nicoles favorite of the bunch. It was slow and steady and picked up most of the debris, she says. It picked up so much dirt and sediment that it filled up the pools filter very quickly (within minutes) to the point where it kept getting stuck. Luckily, we dont usually have that much debris in the pool, so it just showed the cleaner’s suction power. Overall, the pool cleaner is very hands-off and easy to use.

Nicole continued testing the cleaner for over three months. She also phoned a veteran pool owner, Bobby Attonito, who has over thirty years of pool cleaning and maintenance experience. After using the Hayward Pool Cleaner in his own 15-by-30-foot kidney-shaped pool, Bobby said, Ive owned Hayward products before, but this is the most sophisticated by far.

Bobby noted that the cleaner does not go far up the sides of the poolonly about two feet before dropping down, but that it is not an issue for him. He also said cleaning the entire pool takes roughly three hours. While he didnt have any issues with broken parts or repairs, Attonito was pleased to note that Hayward always offers parts and repair guides for its products, making them easy to fix if something breaks in the future.

I think I will have this product for the rest of my life, Bobby says.

After three months of daily testing, Bobby said the cleaner didnt clog. It even picked up small stones that his past pool vacuums would get clogged with.

FAQ

Is Hayward a good pool vacuum?

After months of testing pool cleaners in real peoples backyard pools, the Hayward Pool Cleaner is one of our favorites if youre looking for an affordable, easy-to-use and effective pool cleaner.

Why is my Hayward pool cleaner not moving?

If you find that your Hayward Pool Cleaner isnt moving, there is probably an obstruction in the cleaner. The brand recommends removing the inspection plate at the bottom of the cleaner to see if a large piece of debris is wedged between the bearings and the turbine.

What Other Reviewers Had to Say

With over 2,000 five-star reviews on Amazon, heres what reviewers said about theHayward Pool Cleaner.

Verified purchaserDouglas Wilson says, Excellent pool sweeper! I find this one the best Ive had for my pool. Really does what you want with no tangles and a strong suction. Once my pool pump is activated the job gets done! Really helps my pool man so my worries for a clean pool throughout the week are gone! I love this unit and I highly recommend it!

Five-star reviewerChuck Millersays, This checks all the “must have” boxes that everyone complains about on other cleaners. And it checks all my boxes, so no brainer This is my second one. First lasted 4+ years, with 2 minor repairs: the rubber tires eventually wear down (about 2 years), and it has gears inside that also eventually wear down (2-3 years). Pretty easy to replace gears and away it goes Very happy with it, and not only would I buy it again, I just did buy another.

Hayward Pool Cleaner: 2-Wheel vs. 4-Wheel

If you have a pool larger than 16 by 32 feet, then you may want to purchase the four-wheel version of the Hayward Poolvergnuegen. The four-wheel version is just $30 more and cleans pools up to 20 by 40 feet. It also comes with a hose about seven feet longer and weighs about 1.5 pounds more than the two-wheeler. Apart from those things, virtually all of the specs and features of the two-wheeler and four-wheeler are the same.

Final Verdict

After testing the Hayward Pool Cleaner daily for over three months, our Content Director Nicole Doster confidently recommends this easy-to-use, automatic pool cleaner. It effectively cleans dirty pools and doesnt get caught or clogged on typical debris. While its cleaning method is slow and steady, Nicole thinks its a good value and effective at cleaning standard-sized pools.

A person wearing jeans, a sleeveless shirt, and work boots kneels on a wooden deck under construction. They are looking closely at the wooden planks while holding a hammer. A tool belt is strapped to their waist, and safety glasses rest on the deck nearby.

Deck Board Spacing with Chalk

Measure an equal distance from each end of the deck, allowing for an overhang (if desired), and snap a chalk line as a guide for the first row of decking. Align the first row with the chalk line and nail or screw the boards to the joists.

Then, use spacers at each joist to keep the gap between boards consistent and to keep the boards running straight. Sixteen-penny nails are about the right size for spacing between deck boards. But sight down your boards occasionally as well. You can easily spot when a board is off.

Here in Wisconsin, there’s no such thing as too much outdoor storage space. Between patio furniture, grills, yard tools, lawnmowers, snow blowers, gardening supplies and all the related odds and ends, it can be tough to find a home for all your gear. Especially when said home needs to offer protection from snow, wind, ice and other damaging weather conditions.

If your garage is bursting at the seams, it may be time to consider a backyard shed. While, of course, you can spend thousands of dollars on a pre-fab shed or professional installation, the best shed kits offer a DIY solution at, typically, a fraction of the cost.

To determine if these easy-to-buy and (supposedly) easy-to-assemble shed kits are worth it, I tested a resin model from one of the most popular brands on the market. Here is my honest Keter storage shed review.

What is a Keter Storage Shed?

Keter is an outdoor goods brand specializing in sheds, furniture and outdoor storage. The brand keeps sustainability top of mind, forgoing single-use plastics for weather-durable resin. Keter products are manufactured in North America, Europe and Israel.

Keter sheds, specifically, provide storage solutions for outdoor spaces of all sizes. You can choose from mini-yet-mighty boxes, starting around 30 cubic feet. Or, graduate to extra-large sheds, complete with skylights, windows and hundreds of cubic feet. Even the largest sheds come in a flat-pack style and require DIY assembly.

For this review, I tested the Keter Premier Tall Resin Outdoor Storage Shed.

Keter Storage Shed

Keter Premier Tall Storage Shed Features

  • Made of quality, weather-resistant materials
  • Compatible with shelving (sold separately)
  • Available on Amazon with fast, free shipping
  • Compatible with a padlock for safe storage
  • Attractive design
  • Measures roughly 55 inches wide, 29 inches deep and 67 inches tall
  • Weighs 78 pounds

How We Tested It

Ive been testing the Keter Premier Tall Resin Outdoor Storage Shed since June 2024.

Packaging and Delivery

Keter Shed box on grass

Ive had my share of large items delivered, and the process for the Keter Shed was seamless. It came via an Amazon freight truck, and there was no need to coordinate a delivery window or sign for the package. The drivers simply leaned the large box against my garage.

The box was in pretty good shape, with just a few tears. Since it weighs over 75 pounds, I did require help to move it near the assembly area.

Assembly

Keter Shed with just walls on grass

Once the box was in place, it was time for the not-so-fun part: assembly! I enlisted my dad for help, as the instructions clearly state this is a two-person job.

I opened the box, and everything was packaged securely. There was the base and roof, the walls, the doors, some connecting pieces and hardware. I started by building the walls, which required attaching long, black connectors to each wall section and securing the pieces to the floor. The first few I put up were very unstable and blew down with a light wind gust. For this step, Id recommend having one person support the structure while the other connects the wall pieces.

Then, it was time to add the roof. It rests atop the newly constructed walls and was a little tricky to configure. (I did not have it perfectly aligned, which led to slightly ajar doors. Oops!)

Screwing the hinges of Keter Shed

Next came the doors. These were also a little tricky as I had to make sure I was using the correct left and right parts. Everything is labeled, but the labels were four characters long and very similar to one another. It took a good amount of brainpower and triple-reading the instructions to ensure I was taking the correct step.

Once the structure was generally built, it was time to go through and secure it with (what feels) like a million screws. Now, the instructions call for an electric screwdriver. My cordless version wasnt charged, so I persevered with a handheld screwdriver. It is possible to complete with pure (wo)manpower, but I strongly suggest following the instructions and using a power tool.

After all, most of the screws go directly into the plastic with very few pilot holes. This design makes sense, as the product was tricky to get perfectly square, but it requires more muscle. Plus, it makes the whole process a little more nerve-wracking. When building flat-pack furniture, I look to those holes to guide me and signify Im on the right track. Once again, I found myself triple-checking the instructions that I was screwing into the right spot.

Keter Shed Door handles

All in, assembly took us about two hours. We built the shed on long grass, and the doors catch. I wish the base was a few inches thicker to make the doors easier to open on any surface, but the sheds final resting space will be on a bed of gravel and pavers, which should help.

First Impressions

Keter Shed roof

After stepping back to review our handiwork, I was pretty impressed! The shed feels sturdy, thanks to all those screws that help keep it in place. It’s definitely not as secure as a wood shed, but it should do the trick.

It also has a significant storage footprint. I could easily envision the multitude of uses for this shed: storing gardening supplies, stashing yard tools (even the tall ones, like rakes and shovels!) and holding off-season holiday decor. The options are endless. One caveat: There is a small gap between the doors and the wall, so Im not sure I would use this to hold bird seed, patio cushions or other easily eaten materials in a Wisconsin winter. Mice and chipmunks are known for digging their way into garages, barns and sheds to make shelter, and this gap feels like an invitation.

As an added bonus, the shed comes with hardware to add shelving if desired. Now, truthfully, at this price point, it would be nice if the kit came with a few basic shelves. But having the option is still handy.

Storage

Fhma24 Keter Shed Katie Bandurski 08 Yvedit.jpg

Once the shed was assembled, I started testing its footprint. I added yard tools, like shovels and rakes. Some of the taller picks didn’t fit, so keep that in mind when selecting a size for your shed if you’re looking to store XL tools. A cordless leaf blower, flower pots and yard waste bags also fit easily. I’m planning to order a yard tool organizer to keep all of the lanky tools aligned. When they’re stacked next to each other, they can be tricky to access.

For fun, I also tried to fit our push mower. As expected, it did not fit. Maybe a very small or robotic option would be able to squeeze inside, but this shed is too narrow for most models.

Pros

  • Solid storage option for small backyards or those with limited space
  • Sleek, attractive design
  • Quality materials
  • Ability to add shelving for extra storage
  • Modest price point
  • Fairly quick assembly
  • Free, fast shipping on Amazon

Cons

  • Tricky to assemble (minimal pilot holes; confusing part names; no written instructions, only pictures)
  • Shelves are not included
  • Requires a flat, level surface for the doors to open easily

FAQ

Are Keter sheds any good?

Yes! Theyre an accessible, sturdy way to add storage. Keter sheds come in many shapes and sizes to fit any space. Plus, theyre fairly simple to assemble and are delivered flat-pack style directly to your door.

Are Keter sheds waterproof?

In my experience, yes! Weve had a lot of rain this Wisconsin summer, including torrential downpours and wind, and Ive yet to see any leaks inside the shed. I plan to test this product in the long term and will report back after the winter to ensure it holds up to snow and ice, too.

Plants add a wonderful element to any living environment. Only recently did I start to consider growing plants in anything other than pots, on the floor or sitting on a side table near a window. I love my plants and wanted to find a creative way to incorporate them into an indoor space. As I researched ideas and options, I found living walls are all the rage and very much on trend.

The more I pondered making a living wall, the more I realized I have some specific things I want to incorporate into it. I want my living wall to be modular so I can change and rearrange it as my indoor plants grow. I want to water my living wall plants/pots in place, and I don’t want to pull out a ladder whenever I want to reach the top layer. I want my living wall to have a glowing essence. And I want to make my living wall big.

This means adding a drip system and accent lighting and truly filling up a wall space. This living wall combines functionality, visual stimulation and an easy DIY approach to making it a reality. The only secret is to have fun and feel free to make your own decisions to customize it your way.

Fun fact: Greenhouses can extend a growing season and raise temperatures on cold days by allowing filtered light through their windows. As a recent transplant back to the southern U.S., I had to be reminded of their warm-weather usesdiffusing direct sunlight and allowing for more control over temperature and humidity levels.

Things like pots, potting soil and tools can be stored in a greenhouse, keeping everything within reach and accessible. Greenhouses like the Willow also allow you to add water and electricity, so you can really extend its capabilities by adding heat sources, lights, automatic waterers and misters. I decided to put this highly rated greenhouse to the test in my own backyard, and here’s what I really thought.

What is the Willow Greenhouse?

Backyard Discovery Greenhouse Setup

We Tried It

Backyard Discovery Willow Greenhouse

The greenhouse comes unassembled, but fret notthe instructions for building it are terrific. It’s designed to withstand year-round use and has a plethora of useful features that set it apart from simpler greenhouses. It’s small enough to fit into most yards and comes with an outstanding five-year warranty.

A lot of greenhouses utilize polycarbonate as the windows. The Willow greenhouse also does this, but instead of using steel or PVC pipe as the structure, it uses a solid cedar wood construction. The cedar makes it not only attractive but also sturdy!

Willow Greenhouse Product Features

Backyard Discovery Greenhouse Product features

The Willow greenhouse comes ready to assemble in five boxes that may be shipped by freight. All of the cedar has pre-drilled holes and should your assembly directions end up wet and ruined like mine, no worries! Backyard Discovery uses the app Bilt for detailed instructions.

You can download the app to your phone or tablet (I definitely recommend using your tablet). In fact, everyone working on the project can put the assembly instructions on their own phones. I cant say enough how amazing this app was for building the greenhouse. It can read the steps out loud and allows for zooming, full 3D rotation and tapping on a part gives you the part name. The ability to do this is a game changer of monumental proportions for assemblies as detailed and intensive as this build.

The interior space is generous at 54 square feet, seven feet 10 inches in height and 13 feet of shelves for you to work or keep plants. Theres one window that opens for ventilation, but also a wall-mounted temperature controller that will turn on the included exhaust fan (using the included power port), giving you automated control. There are two spigots and piping to hook up water to the exterior and then access it directly from the interior spigot or attach a hose for manual or automated watering.

Did I mention that this thing is sturdy? It can withstand 100-mile-per-hour winds and 2,850 pounds of weightnot something you expect from a backyard greenhouse. The strength comes from the solid cedar construction, the four-wall polycarbonate windows and the hefty hardware that holds the entire thing together. A five-year limited warranty is included to back up this robust greenhouse.

How We Tested It

Backyard Discovery Greenhouse Test

When I set out to construct this beautiful greenhouse, I didnt know exactly what lay ahead. After unpacking a few boxes and staring at what seemed to be thousands of screws, I felt some pangs of worry. After downloading the installation instructions, I saw that 2 people at 12 hours of work was the estimate for the build. The instructions do not lie.

However, I enlisted my village to build this greenhouse and I highly recommend you do, too. In fact, three to four people seemed ideal for building this greenhouseone person reading directions, one person locating the parts, and the other two doing the work. Overall, about 10 people participated in this build with a peanut gallery of onlookers cheering for us. Make this installation a party, and you wont regret it. Oh yeah, and it took us about 14 hours total.

Backyard Discovery Greenhouse test 2

The first thing we did when getting ready to build was to lay out all the parts in an order in which we could more readily find them. This was a big activity in and of itself. The five boxes did not contain the parts in any particular order or size, so doing this activity was paramount to our success. Each box has a bill of materials in it, but we quickly realized that the most efficient process was to get things in alphabetical order.

After selecting a level location for the greenhouse, we got to building using the instructions found on the Bilt app. We used tablets (yes, plural tablets because we needed recharges since we were without power at the building site) that were big enough for everyone to see from a short distance. Again, I mention this app because it is amazing. Throughout the build, we did not find a single error in the directions, and Im simply amazed at how helpful it was.

Backyard Discovery Greenhouse test 3

Erecting the frame was done first and was simple enough. From there, there were a number of cosmetic steps that felt a little futile, but in the end, really made the greenhouse attractive. The next steps involved building up the cedar sides and polycarbonate windows. Finally, the roofing went on, and we were ready to seal up the edges and install the fan, power supply and water access.

Once the greenhouse was completed, we all took a step back and admired it and our work. Now was the time to put it to use. We filled the greenhouse up with orchids, fresh herbs and vegetables. We potted on the sturdy shelves. Over the weeks, the greenhouse has maintained them perfectly with great humidity and temperature control. Everything is thriving.

Pros

  • Solid cedar construction
  • Heavy-duty polycarbonate windows
  • Temperature-controlled exhaust fan
  • Interior water
  • Power supply
  • Useful helving
  • Attractive look

Cons

  • Pricier than more simple greenhouses
  • Extensive assembly required

FAQ

Is a backyard greenhouse worth it?

Depending on your needs and expectations, a backyard greenhouse can be worth the investment. Though there is an upfront cost to a greenhouse, you can extend your growing season and protect plants. The savings in plants can offset costs, but there is no dollar value that can be assigned to the pleasures of year-round gardening.

Where are Backyard Discovery greenhouses made?

Backyard Discovery greenhouses are primarily made in China. The headquarters are based in Pittsburg, Kansas.

What’s the best kind of greenhouse for year-round weather?

Year-round weather may involve cold and hot extremes as well as harsh sunlight. Look for a greenhouse that can withstand heavy snows, high winds and hail. Accessories such as automated exhaust fans can greatly help control high temperatures. Having a power source is great for adding light during winter hours.

Are greenhouse kits worth it?

The answer here probably depends on who you ask. However, investing in a quality greenhouse will offer you years of extended and safe growing. Always consider your environment when selecting a greenhouse because its durability is critical to whether or not your investment will be worth it. Many inexpensive greenhouses are available, but not all can withstand weather conditions over time.

Comparison to Other Greenhouses

A quick Internet perusal will reveal that not only the greenhouses but all of the Backyard Discovery products, such as play sets and gazebos, receive high ratings. When compared to other greenhouses in this price category, they hold their own for being easy to assemble and incredibly strong due to the high-quality components.

Myself and my neighbors have gone through at least half a dozen lesser quality backyard greenhouses over the last 10 years without a single one lasting more than about 18 months before becoming unusable due to broken parts or a full on collapse of the structure. When compared to less expensive greenhouses, youll find that the Backyard Discovery greenhouses stand high above the rest. They are able to endure harsh conditions and have much greater longevity (and they look good, too)!

Final Verdict

Backyard Discovery Greenhouse Final Verdict

I have nothing but positive things to say about Backyard Discoverys Willow greenhouse. The ease of assembly, the durable components, and the awesome accessories should make this a top pick for any plant-growing enthusiast. And did I mention how attractive this greenhouse is? Its truly a beautiful addition to any style of yard. If youre looking for a greenhouse, dont overlook this one; its a keeper.

A Guide To Correctly Attaching a New Deck to A House https://www.familyhandyman.com/article/attaching-deck-to-house/ Tue, 25 Jun 2024 18:56:11 +0000 https://www.familyhandyman.com/?p=620278 The connection between a deck and the house can be its most vulnerable point. It won't be if you do it according to these expert tips.

The post A Guide To Correctly Attaching a New Deck to A House appeared first on Family Handyman.

]]>
Out here on California’s Central Coast, it’s rare to find a house without a deck. If you don’t see one in the front of the house, it’s probably in the back, and many of them are attached to the house. That means that builders like my former employer, Are Dann, retired owner of Dann Construction, must be adept at connecting the deck to the building.

It is possible to make a freestanding deck that abuts the building and to run decking boards right up the siding, but that’s something you only need to do if the siding is faux brick, faux or real stone or some other material that doesn’t lend itself to making the connection. Most houses in Dann’s service area have wood, fiber cement or vinyl siding, though, which he says are easier to work with. “You can cut back the siding far enough to allow you to fasten a ledger board to the sheathing and to the building’s rim joist,” says Dann. “Then install flashing, repair the siding and get on with building the deck.”

Dann and I have worked together on several deck projects. Using the techniques I learned while working with him, I’ve built a few on my own and with the help of other workers. Ahead, you’ll find our pointers for attaching a deck to a house the right way.

Preparing a House for a New Deck

Guide To Correctly Attaching A New Deck To A House

In some cases, you might be replacing an old deck with a new one, and if so, it’s important to remove the old ledger board when you demolish the deck. After removing the old deck, you can determine if you can still use the house rim to support the new ledger board.

If the wall sheathing behind the rim looks good, you’re okay. But if the sheathing is rotten, it’s important to investigate further by removing the rotted areas and checking the house’s rim joist and wall framing to see if they’re rotten, too. Dann cautions not to be too eager to rip apart and replace moist or discolored wood because it may still be intact below the surface. Jam a screwdriver into the wood in several places, and if the screwdriver penetrates more than 1/4 in. or so, it’s replacement time. That can be a huge job, so you may want an experienced carpenter to help walk you through that process.

If the sheathing is intact, or there is no existing deck to worry about, you only need to map out the deck’s perimeter on the ground and mark the positions of the postholes for the deck supports. Before digging, don’t forget to call 811 to get a map of underground utilities on your property you don’t want to place a post directly over a sewer or cut through a pipe or wire when digging. Dann also recommends laying a plastic weed barrier, which also helps improve drainage.

How Decks Connect to Homes

Installing a ledger board is the most secure way to connect a deck to a house. That way, you’ll be using the solid structure of the house to support your deck. The ledger has the same dimensions as the rest of the deck joists, and it serves as a rim joist to support the joists running perpendicular to the wall.

Like the joists, the ledger should be made from pressure-treated wood to prevent rot. “A rotted ledger board is a disaster,” says Dann. “It compromises the stability of the entire deck, the rot often spreads to the building’s structure, and it’s difficult to replace without demolishing a significant portion of the deck.”

Attaching a Deck Ledger

Rather than attaching the ledger board to the siding, Dann typically cuts the siding back so he can attach the ledger to the sheathing. After cutting the ledger to the proper length, he attaches it with long fasteners that will go all the way through the sheathing and penetrate the building’s band joist.

“Don’t use nails,” he cautions. “They’ll pull out.” The old-school fastening method uses 1/2-in. galvanized lag screws, but most builders these days opt for 1/4-in. structural screws they can drive with an impact driver. Despite the smaller diameter, they are stronger and speed up the project. Local building codes usually regulate how many screws you need and where you should place them, so do your research before you start the project.

Proper Deck Height

The ledger board’s height determines the deck’s height, and to prevent water pooling and ice build-up, the deck surface should be an inch or two below the thresholds of the doors that open onto the deck. To determine the height of the ledger, add the thickness of the decking to this gap. For example, if you set the deck two inches below the door thresholds and you use 1 1/2-in. decking, place the ledger board 3-1/2 inches below the thresholds.

The height of the ledger board determines the lengths of the deck posts, which is why Dann always sets the ledger before cutting the posts. Once the ledger is in place, it’s easy to attach a line to the top, stretch it out to each post, level it with a line level and make marks. All he has to do is lower these marks by the width of the beams the posts support, and he can mark the cut lines on the posts.

Why Flashing is Important

Even if you leave a gap between the top of the deck and the door thresholds, water will still run off the ends of the decking and seep down along the siding. You must install flashing to prevent the ledger and the siding from rotting.

Dann installs metal Z-flashing (drip cap) over the entire length of the top of the ledger and tucks the vertical portion under the siding. When working with horizontal cladding, he removes cladding boards to expose the sheathing and installs new cladding directly over the flashing. He then custom-cuts and fits another strip of flashing to put over this drip cap and under doors to cover and protect remaining unflashed areas under door sills. Finally, he caulks the gap between the flashing and the bottom of door thresholds.

It’s good practice to also install Z-flashing behind the bottom of the ledger and over the siding below. This keeps water from wicking along the bottom of the ledger and getting behind the siding. To keep water from leaking behind the ends of the ledger, Dann leaves a 1/8-in. gap between the end of the ledger and the ends of the siding and fills it with high-quality exterior caulk.

FAQs

Do I need a permit to build a deck attached to my house?

Yes. Most decks require permits. The International Residential Code provides an exemption for a deck built less than 30 inches above the surrounding grade and with a total area of less than 200 square feet, but not if the deck is attached to the house. Be sure to obtain this permit before you start, or you might have to tear it down after completing all the work.

Will adding a deck increase the resale value of my home?

Generally, yes. The amount varies, but it’s generally in the neighborhood of 60 to 75 percent of the cost of building the deck. The actual bump in your home’s resale value depends on a number of factors, including the materials you use and the design of the deck. Climate is also a factor: A deck adds more value if the climate is warm enough for people to spend time outside using it.

The great news is you can clean pavers with just a few tools, materials and some elbow grease.

The post How To Clean Patio Pavers Without a Pressure Washer appeared first on Family Handyman.

Although pavers are known for their durability, pressure washing may damage them if you’re not careful or use the wrong equipment. Conversely, properly maintaining and washing pavers keeps them looking good for years. “Pavers are durable but do need some light routine maintenance to keep them looking clean and fresh,” Joe Raboine from Oldcastle APG says. Read on to learn how to clean your patio pavers without a pressure washer with pro tips from Raboine and Ryan Farley from Lawnstarter.

Safety Precautions

Wear gloves and protective glasses if using harsh chemicals. Pavers can become slippery when wet, so wear sturdy, non-slip footwear.

When to Call a Pro

If stains are too severe for a DIY cleaning job or your pavers are starting to wear, contact a professional for an assessment.

How much does it cost to hire a pro?

There are many factors to consider, but expect to pay between $1 and $2 per sq. ft. to have your pavers cleaned, sand replaced and sealed.

Remove objects and debris

  • Remove furniture, plants and all other objects from the patio.
  • “Sweep off your paver patio to remove dirt, debris and leaf buildup,” Raboine says.
  • Remove weeds from between pavers with a weeding tool. Wear gardening gloves to protect your hands.

How To Repot a Plant https://www.familyhandyman.com/project/how-to-repot-a-plant/ Mon, 17 Jun 2024 16:56:00 +0000 Maximize your plants' potential by learning how to repot a plant like a pro- from preparing the new container to ensuring healthy growth.

The post How To Repot a Plant appeared first on Family Handyman.

]]>

Repotting a plant is more than putting a plant in a pot. Not all plants belong in the same pot. Not all pots are adequate for all plants. Plastic, terracotta, cement, ceramic, wood? Many things to consider.

Growing a thriving plant depends on the soil and pot you choose for it. I am amazed at how many times I find a friend has a potted plant dying simply because the pot they have it in does not have a hole for drainage, the roots are rotting, and their watering schedule is off. A plant WILL tell you what it needs. You just have to observe it. Seeing roots emerge from drainage holes, roots emerge from the soil, and leaves and stems drop off all indicate that it is time to repot the plant. My assumption is that you have a great soil mix for your plant. I must, however, also share how to select the correct pot for the plant and how to create drainage in any container without a hole.

Before you repot, research the plants you will pot and what they prefer in terms of moisture, light, and pH balance. Then, according to meter readings, adjust the watering schedule, light exposure, and soil acidity. Give the plant a good watering a few days before you plan to repot it. This will help the plant have a heartier transition and loosen the roots from the walls of the old pot.

Select a potting container

Terracotta pots are always a happy home for plants because they absorb moisture and breathe with the plant. However, if the pot you choose is metal, plastic or ceramic glazed, ensure it has a hole at the bottom for proper drainage.

spider plant in small clay pot with a bigger pot next to it

If your pot does not have a hole, you can easily drill one to allow water to drain properly and prevent roots from rotting or fungus and disease from developing. Use a drill bit that is appropriate for the material of your pot. Masonry bit for ceramic or terracotta. Metal bit for metal. Glass bit for glass. Acrylic or wood bit for plastic or resin. If you have to drill a hole in your pot:

  • Find and mark the center point of your pot’s bottom. Place a couple of pieces of painter’s tape where you intend to drill to prevent chipping or cracking, especially in glass or ceramic.
  • Drill through the bottom or turn it upside down and drill downward. Either way, ensure you have a sacrificial piece of wood supporting where you will drill through to prevent the drill from blowing out the material and creating any further damage to the pot.
  • When drilling through glass, ceramics, terracotta, or plaster, add water to cool the bit and prevent the powder of the material from becoming airborne. If you are drilling through metal, a couple of drops of oil will do the same to lubricate the bit and material.

I love plants and quickly realized that my plants do better when I make my own potting soil. It is part science and part green thumb instinct not brain surgery!

I used to purchase potting soil in a bag off the shelf, and after some plants failed, I decided to get a soil meter. The pH balance of potting soil out of a bag was often too high or too low. I found that by mixing my own soil, I can better control the pH balance in my dirt and help my potted plants thrive in the elements where I place them. After getting a soil meter, I quickly learned I could change the pH by adding acidity in the form of coffee grounds. First, let me share how I mix my potting soil, along with some green thumb tips to help your leafy friends thrive.

These are gardening hacks for mixing potting soil for plants needing more moisture and/or repotting for plants requiring less moisture, such as succulents and cacti. Small adjustments in each recipe make all the difference in the world to your plants. Different plants prefer different pH balances or acidities in the mixture. Take the time to research the plants you will pot and what they prefer. Adjust ratios and eliminate or remove materials as you see fit to create the best potting soil for your plant.

DIY potting soil recipe:

  • 1-part loam soil, commonly called garden soil
  • 2-parts sphagnum peat moss or coco coir fiber
  • 1-1/2-parts perlite
  • 1/2-cup of sand
  • 1/2-teaspoon of lime (only if you are using peat moss)
  • 1-teaspoon of granular organic fertilizer
  • 1-teaspoon of bone meal
  • Worm castings – follow the recommended ratio from the manufacturer
  • 1-part vermiculite (for succulents and cactus)

FAQs

How to waterproof a TV for outdoors?

You can waterproof an outdoor TV using a cover made from water- and mildew-resistant materials. You can also ensure that the TV is fully under the cover of a deck or closed porch. There are also plenty of outdoor TV enclosures and cabinets.

Is it okay to put a regular TV outside?

It might seem like a good idea to put any TV outside, but regular picks are not suitable for withstanding the elements, even if they’re under an enclosure. In addition to being unable to handle water, the sun will also ruin these TV screens.

How long will a regular TV last outside?

Outside TVs can last for years, depending on how you care for them. Even with the best upkeep, these TVs last six to twelve months. Condescension and the sun can start corroding the internal components of the TV.

How to Make a Wooden Disc Swing https://www.familyhandyman.com/project/disc-swing/ Thu, 16 May 2024 17:26:34 +0000 https://www.familyhandyman.com/?post_type=project&p=607530 Here's how to make a disc swing in two different ways. An elaborate version using a woodturning lathe and a simpler version using a router.

The post How to Make a Wooden Disc Swing appeared first on Family Handyman.

]]>

Building a disc swing using a woodturning lathe is probably one of my favorite projects. Truth be told, anything made on a lathe will be among my favorites because it is my all-time favorite tool! Once you know the woodturning basics, making a disc swing on a lathe is woodturning 101.

A woodturning lathe is statistically the last tool a carpenter sets out to use. It does have a steep learning curve, and the initial investment to get started can be pricey. However, there are ways to get your hands on a lathe without purchasing one. Some woodworking stores give lessons and have open studio time, and many woodturning clubs have lathes available to their members. I promise: once you try woodturning, you’ll want to do more.

Here I share the steps to making a disc swing on a lathe, a very easy woodturning project once you have mastered the basics. Alternatively, you may choose to use a router to construct the swing, which I also discuss below.

Prep wood for turning

Regardless of the size of the wood you will mount, find the center and pencil out your circle. Use a miter saw to cut 45-degree cuts close to your line on your circle to eliminate as much of the wood outside the circle as possible. You will end up with an octagon. This will help you reach a balanced circle faster once you start cutting with the chisels on the lathe.

6 Ways To Create A Cooling Patio In 2024 Choose The Right Trees To Shade The Sun Courtesy @bowerandbranch Instagram

Choose the Right Trees to Shade the Sun

“For planting around patios, it is so important to clearly understand the desired shade and from what direction this will come,” says Don Eaton, founder of the premium tree and plant company Bower & Branch, which serves homeowners nationwide. “We can plant for morning shade and/or afternoon shade. I always plant for filtered shade beginning around noon and going deeper through the evening when I most enjoy my patio.”

Don recommends, “Japanese maples, non-weeping, are a great choice. Bloodgood Japanese maple is an easy one to grow and a reliable small tree that results in minimal mess,” adding, “I like to include small or slow-growing evergreens, like umbrella pine or Wells-special Hinoki cypress. I also very much like redbuds and dogwoods, which are two (types) of small flowering trees without a mess.”

What We Like About It: Not only do larger specimens provide shade to cool the space, like in this example showing a redbud variety from @BowerandBranch, but they’re so much more interesting than a solid wall or other surface. Adding trees with various leaf types and growing habits brings the space to life.

Pick a Sunny Spot for Your Pond With a Waterfall

If your yard has only one spot that will accommodate a pond with a waterfall, dont worryyou can create a great garden pond in just about any location. But if you have two or three spots to choose from, consider the upkeep factor.

If you locate your pond in an area that gets at least six hours of direct sunlight each day, youll have a wide variety of easy-to-care-for plants to choose from. Plants that thrive in shade are available too, so you can create a pond in a spot that never gets direct sunlight. But youll have fewer easy-care choices and you may have to pay a bit more to get the mix of plants you want.

There is such a thing as too much sun, though. In the Southern United States, choose a site that gets shade in the afternoon. Afternoon sun can overheat the water; and that can harm fish and plants and cause algae to flourish.

One way to preserve plants through harsh winters is to keep them in buckets indoors. A more convenient method is to create a deep area in your pond. Keep your aquatic plants in pots or root sacks and you can move them to the deep water in the fall. The necessary water depth depends on your climate and plants. Placed in 3 ft. of water, hardy plants will survive in even the coldest climates.

Tips For Choosing And Buying Deck Lumber Buy Pressure-Treated Lumber With the Right Amount of Preservative for the Job

Buy Pressure-Treated Lumber With the Right Amount of Preservative for the Job

Use pressure-treated lumber for the structural part of your deck the posts, joists, beams and other members you normally don’t see. It’s the logical choice; PT lumber can support more weight and span longer distances than cedar, redwood, or other woods commonly used for building decks. It’s also much less expensive.

The lumber industry rates PT lumber according to the pounds of preservative retained per cubic foot of wood; the higher the number, the better the protection against fungi and insect attacks. Select decking boards with the preservative concentration suitable for their use. The wood used in situations where it’s more likely to rot more preservatives.

The three common ratings, which correspond to preservative concentration, are:

  • Above-grade, use .25 (sometimes .15). This includes decking, fence and railing material.
  • Ground-contact, use .40. This includes posts, beams, joists and decking.
  • Below-grade, use .60. This includes support posts that are partially buried below grade and for permanent wood foundations and planters.

Note: Decking boards are tagged with the concentration and treating solution used. CCA (chromated copper arsenate) was once the most common preservative, but it was phased out in 2004 in favor of ACQ (alkaline copper quat) and other preservatives because of health concerns. “Modern preservatives are certified safe for plants, animals, people, ponds, and waterways,” says Kou.

Here, we'll focus on how to prep a deck for staining, including repairing, cleaning and sanding. Read on to learn helpful tips with Rachel Otto from Fleury Lumber and Shayne Pancione from Pancione Painting Plus.

Why Prep Your Deck Before Re-staining?

Thorough prep work is critical when re-staining a deck. Unlike paint, stain needs to penetrate into the wood surface to protect the deck from water and sun damage.

Proper prep work removes old coatings, cleans the wood and opens up wood pores to readily absorb new stain. Without these steps, new finishes can fail early. "If you have a deck that's older and in rough shape, take time to clean the wood, brighten it and restore it before re-staining," Otto says.

Make repairs

Make any necessary repairs before re-staining.

  • Secure any loose fasteners on the deck with a hammer or cordless drill.
  • Replace large areas of rotted wood or entire boards if necessary. Use an oscillating saw with a plunge blade to remove rotted sections at the joists. Use a pry bar to pull up boards.
  • Repair any rotted spots on boards. Pancione says to scrape out the rotted wood, then fill it with a stainable two-part wood filler epoxy.
