Ahhh, fall. The time of year that evokes grilled meat, toasty marshmallows and football, football, football. Solo Stove knows that tailgating season means gathering around the grill, and they’re getting in on the action with their latest product: The Solo Stove Cookout Kit. Releasing October 15, the $300 cookout kit transforms your beloved fire pit into a grill in a few easy steps.

Hungry for more? Check out this newest fall staple.

What is the Solo Stove Cookout Kit?

If you’ve ever debated whether you should bring your fire pit or grill to the parking lot tailgate, the Solo Stove Cookout Kit is for you. This kit comfortably elevates your Bonfire 2.0 off the ground and turns it into a grill for cooking, effectively giving you the best of both worlds. It is worth noting that this kit is only compatible (as of now) with the Bonfire 2.0, so don’t try to stick your Yukon in the slot; you’ll be disappointed when it topples over. Perhaps in the future, the brand will release different size options.

The kit is made of the same durable powder-coated steel Solo Stove uses on its fire pits. It’s also corrosion resistant, so you can feel good spending a couple hundred dollars on a product that’ll actually last outside.

Little ledges pull out on either side of the fire pit holder, ideal for prepping buns or laying out a few condiments. Plus, who doesn’t like a little counter space when they’re cooking or grilling? The legs can also be folded in or out, depending on how high up you’d like the flame to sit.

This foldability also makes it easy to throw the Cookout Kit in your car and set up in mere minutes when you get to your destination.

And for big-time NFL fans, Solo Stove offers Cookout Kit customizations featuring the logo of your favorite team.

When it comes to hosting get-togethers, enjoying the backyard is a huge perk. Friends company with autumn leaves falling on the ground, kids playing in the grass and someone grilling food for the crowd can create lasting core memories. Of course, securing the best backyard setup for gatherings isnt always easy. There are a ton of choices when it comes to deck furniture, outdoor grills, fire pits and more.

Luckily, Ive locked down my all-time favorite outdoor fire pit brand: Solo Stove. Ive tested products from various outdoor brands, and I’ve written countless Solo Stove reviews. So far, my favorite smokeless fire pit comes from Solo Stove. Ive spent countless hours testing products from the brand: Fire pits, chairs, patio heaters, you name it. If Solo Stove makes it, Ive (likely) tested it. Heres what you need to know before placing an order.

What is Solo Stove?

Solo Stove is a leading outdoor fire pit brand founded in 2011 by two brothers and a small camp stove. Their mission? To gather family and friends to create good memories. They get it.

Now, the brand has grown to include a variety of smokeless fire pits and pizza ovens, patio furniture, outdoor heaters and outdoor accessories. In addition to the official Solo Stove website, you can find select Solo Stove products on Amazon.

How We Test Solo Stove Products

I have tested over a dozen Solo Stove products in nearly every category, including evergreen, limited-edition and seasonal items. I evaluate each product based on the delivery experience, packaging, assembly, quality, and ease of use. Outfitting your patio or backyard setup with Solo Stove gear can be expensive, so I examine, test and review each product as thoroughly as I can with your hard-earned dollar in mind.

Fire Pits

Fire pits are the bread and butter of Solo Stove and the reason the brand was created. Solo Stove fire pits are a great way to add ambiance and (literal) warmth to your outdoor space, and theyre great for roasting smores and hotdogs, as well as grilling other food items.

When it comes to smokeless fire pits, Solo Stove as a brand is a leading force, creating products that meetand in many cases exceedindustry standards. Each fire pit is made with sturdy, weatherproof 304 stainless steel and designed to funnel smoke upward away instead of outward. Solo Stoves 360-degree Signature Airflow design heats air to burn off smoke, so you dont have to shift around the fire pit to avoid teary eyes and a face full of smoke.

One of our favorite fire pit picks is the Bonfire 2.0, made for the backyard and beyond. In other words, its designed for a permanent or portable fire pit experience. The Solo Stove Bonfire even comes with its own carrying bag, so you can store it safely, load it up, and carry it wherevercamping, tailgating, fall party, you name it. Cleanup is easy, too; the base plate and ash pan are removable, which makes cleaning quick and easy. No special cleaning tools are needed; just lift the base plate to remove the ash pan and dump it.

We also love the Mesa fire pit if youre looking for a smaller, more compact backyard fire experience. It has the same signature stainless steel design as other Solo Stove fire pits (e.g., the Bonfire 2.0), but its miniature and small enough to put on an outdoor table. Getting a fire going only takes a few minutes with the Mesa. Simply place fuel (wood or pellets) into the base of the Mesa, light your fire starter, and youre ready to go!

Pizza Ovens

Did someone say artisan pizza? ThePi Prime is Solo Stoves first gas-only pizza oven, which comes at a price lower than other gas-powered pizza ovens on the market. The Pi Prime pizza oven is quick and easy to fire upsimply hook it up to an external propane tank and turn the control knob on the front to ignite a flame. After the oven preheats, youre ready to launch your Neapolitan pizza creation.

Like most standardoutdoor pizza ovens, the Pi Prime has a 90-second cooking experience, so pizzas cook ultra-fast at super-high temperatures. Once youve nailed launching and turning the pizza without overcooking it, youll be whipping up homemade pies for everyone to enjoy.

If you want to try your hand at wood-fired pizza, theSolo Stove Pi Fire provides the ideal gateway to backyard baking. This portable pizza oven topper fits on top of your existing Solo Stove fire pit. Unliketraditional pizza ovensthat have space for wood at the bottom, the Pi Fire features long legs that elevate it over your smokeless fire pit.

Heaters and Lights

Line your patio with sleek, modern torches like the Mesa Torch, a backyard torchlight that runs on fluid. Its a durable, stainless-steel torch made with the famous Solo Stove design, similar to Mesa’s. The weather-resistant steel is painted a semi-matte black to blend seamlessly into any backyard scene. You can choose between two configurations: tall and short. So, your Mesa Torch can light your fence line or be at eye level when youre sitting around the fire pit.

The Mesa Torch has a giant wick, integrated fuel canister and a bezel that fits the snuff cap perfectly for easy extinguishing. Plus, the torch will keep an oversized flame for up to five hours on a single fill. I like to fill mine with a bug-repelling torch fluid to keep mosquitos at bay during the summer.

If youre looking for something to provide a little more warmth than light, the Solo Stove Tower Patio Heateris a pellet-fueled heater that keeps you warm in colder weather.Like the Solo StoveBonfire 2.0fire pit, it issmokeless. It has about a 10-foot heating radius, so its perfect for small to mid-sized patios during chilly (but not freezing) temperatures.

The Tower Patio Heaters hopper box holds about 25 pounds of pellets, and a full hopper box should produce about three hours of warmth. Its perfect if you want a patio heater that doesnt use propane. Pellets are generally easier to store and lighter in weight than firewood. Theyre also typically less expensive than propane and dont pose the same combustion risks as propane tanks.

Furniture

Once your fire pit area is ready to go, youll need seating to kick back and enjoy the crackling flames. Solo Stove is one step ahead. Its sister brand, TerraFlame, has a line of weatherproof outdoor furniture, including the1903 Adirondack modern chair. It combines the classic, timeless design of an Adirondack with new, lightweight outdoor materials. The chair is made of an eco-friendly composite made partially from recycled plastics.

While the chairs materials are resistant to corrosion, the chair is also less prone to chipping and peeling than a chair made of wood. With this Solo Stove chair, you wont have to worry about snagging clothes or blankets on splinters.

Terra Flame recently released new patio furniture, including coffee tables, loveseats and more. Were currently assembling and testing the new furniture for review.

FAQ

What is the point of a Solo Stove?

Solo Stove fire pits are designed to promote airflow, which creates a more efficient burn with less smoke. They are also portable, so you can sit around the fire anywhere, and help contain the mess (and sometimes unpredictable nature) of a traditional backyard bonfire.

Can a Solo Stove be used on a deck?

Solo Stove fire pits can be used on a wood deck but this requires careful attention. If the fire pit is not properly elevated and insulated or if its misused, the deck can be charred or caught on fire.

You should never leave your Solo Stove fire pit (or any fire pit) unattended on a combustible surface, even while cooling down.

Do Solo Stoves get hot on the outside?

Yes! The outside of Solo Stove fire pits gets very hot, so please be cautious.

Can Solo Stove be used indoors?

You should never use a Solo Stove fire pit indoors, not even theMesa. It is for outdoor use only, so please do not try to use it indoors at your kitchen table. You can, however, use it on outdoor dining tables and end tables.

TerraFlames Smores Bowl uses smoke-free gel fuel and can be used indoors on a table or counter for easy, inside marshmallow roasting.

Why You Should Trust Us

Family Handyman Shopping Editor Mary Henn is an expert in outdoor trends. For almost two years, shes been tracking and testing Solo Stove products through her Solo Stove review series, which is continuously expanding to include various products from the brand.

Shes spent hours extensively testing everything from the brands fire pits to pizza ovens, backyard heaters, patio furniture and more. While Solo Stove is known for churning out quality backyard and fire pit products, Mary tests every product she can get her hands on to ensure that the brands quality lives up to the hype. That way, you can make consumer-informed decisions based on real-life testing before you buy.

The Bottom Line

If youre looking for a well-made, stainless steel backyard fire pit, Solo Stoves got it. The brand manufactures quality products and thoughtful accessories like smores kits, popcorn makers, gloves and so much more. Like many top-tier fire pit brands, some of their products are pricey, but you pay for a fire pit that will be the center of backyard family gatherings for years to come.

Solo Stoves Mesa fire pit starts at $80, while its smallest ground fire pit, the Ranger, retails for $200. Our favorite, the best-selling Bonfire fire pit, sells for $250, while the brands largest fire pit, the Canyon, is $700. Best of all, many Solo Stove accessories are available to elevate your backyard fire pit experience, making Solo Stove unique. The brand offers free standard shipping with a purchase of $99 or more and frequently runs sales and deals sitewide.

The 5 Best Soft Coolers, According to Our Editor After Months of Testing https://www.familyhandyman.com/list/best-soft-coolers/ Thu, 12 Sep 2024 18:47:49 +0000 https://www.familyhandyman.com/?post_type=listicle&p=634790 I've tested dozens of coolers—here are my top five soft coolers to date.

Yeti M15 Tote Soft CoolerMARY HENN/FAMILY HANDYMAN

Best Soft Cooler Overall

Yeti M15 Tote Soft Cooler

Pros:

  • Unbeatable ice retention
  • Durable outer shell
  • Magnetic open and close
  • Side pockets and grid make it easy to store and attach small items
  • Tall enough to hold wine bottles
  • Keeps ice frozen for 24+ hours
  • Leakproof and waterproof
  • 3-year warranty

Cons:

  • Premium price
  • Buckles can be difficult to fasten when cooler is full

If youre a long-time Yeti fan, its probably no surprise that this Yeti soft cooler ranks at the top of my list. To cut to the chase, Yetis ice retention is unbeatable. Couple that with Yetis sleek cooler designs, quality materials and endless cooler accessories, and its no surprise why Yeti is the best overall.

If youre wondering why Ive listed the M15 Tote over the Hopper Flip, it boils down to personal preference. I prefer the look and feel of a tote-shaped cooler over a box-shaped one. However, theyre virtually the same cooler regarding ice retention and construction materials.

Yeti M15 Tote Soft Cooler Testing

The Yeti soft coolers keep things cold the longest (Ive tested a few, including Yeti hard coolers; the M12 Backpack made this list, too). The ice stayed intact after 24 hours with no noticeable melting, and after 40 hours, the contents were still cold. Typically, soft coolers cannot keep contents cold as long as hard coolers, but Yeti soft coolers make it well past the 24-hour mark.

The M15 Tote is the newest addition to Yetis Hopper Soft Cooler line, and its made with MagShield, which means magnets sit at the opening and make the cooler easy to open and close. The heavy-duty magnets lock in the cold and roll down so the whole cooler buckles shut for an added layer of protection. Additionally, the coolers fabric is incredibly durable and UV-resistant. The M15 can fit 32 12-ounce cans (without ice), while the larger M30 can hold 42 cans (without ice).

Tailgating season has officially arrived, so were back with another cooler review because who wants to show up at the tailgate empty-handedor worse, with warm drinks?

Youre probably familiar withor have at least heard ofArctic Zone, the brand that makes reliable and affordable lunch bags and soft coolers. But you might be less familiar with Titan Pro Outdoor Gear, which makes rotomolded hard and welded coolers. Arctic Zone, Titan by Arctic Zone and Titan Pro Outdoor Gear are all brands of the same company. Titan Pro is Arctic Zone’s luxury brand and offers quality, hard-shell coolers with standout features.

When we heard Titan Pro was launching a roto hard cooler, we knew wed need to test it to see how it performs. Ahead, read our unfiltered review of the all-new Titan Pro cooler.

What is the Titan Pro 25Q Roto Hard Cooler?

Arctic Zone designed the Titan Pro 25 Quart Roto Cooler to hold ice for days. Its rotomolded construction is incredibly durable and offers high-performance insulation. The rugged exterior features heavy-duty, easy-open latches, plus a dual-grip drain tethered to the inside so you dont lose it. It also features an adjustable shoulder strap that converts to a handle so you can carry it in whichever way is most comfortable.

It comes with the Ice Saver performance booster, a thermal cover that sits over the coolers contents to reduce ice melt by keeping warm air off of it. The coolers freezer-grade gasket helps keep contents cold longer, too, with an impressively tight seal. Additionally, the coolers hard plastic shell inhibits the growth of bacterial odors and stains, so its easy to clean.

The 25Q Roto Hard Cooler comes in three neutral colors (tan, gray and white), and it has features weve never seen before in all of our days of cooler testing.

Titan Pro 25q High Performance Roto Hard CoolerMARY HENN/FAMILY HANDYMAN

I Tried It

Titan Pro 25Q High Performance Roto Hard Cooler

The perfect cooler for any outdoor activity, even at night thanks to the integrated interior light.

Pros:

  • Interior, waterproof light that detaches and turns on when lid is open
  • Great ice retention, comparable to other high-end brands like Yeti
  • Ice Saver performance booster extends longevity of ice
  • Durable
  • Easy-to-use latches
  • Stainless-steel bottle opener
  • Gear Grabber bungee system holds extra items on top

Cons:

  • Ice Saver thermal cover doesnt fit perfectly; seems like sizing could be better
  • Only available in 3 neutral colors

Features Weve Never Seen Before

The Titan Pro 25Q Roto Cooler has a capacity of 25 quarts (as is in the name) and weighs just over 19 pounds when empty. It’s not just another rotomolded cooler, though: It boasts a few features we haven’t seen in any other ice chests we’ve tested.

Integrated Interior Light

Okay, this cooler has one of the coolest (pun intended) features weve seen: an interior light! Thats right, make nighttime fishing and camping easier with this coolers waterproof, removable LED light. It turns on when the lid is opened, and you can remove it from the interior wall of the cooler to use it as a flashlight or lantern.

Titan Pro 25q Interior Light

Bungee Gear System and Other Accessories

One of my favorite features on this cooler is the bungee system on top of the lid. It allows you to carry small packs and blankets with your food and beverages. It also has a convenient, stainless-steel bottle opener in the front outside corner. Multiple tie-down slots, anti-skid foot pads and padlock compatibility add security to your adventure.

Titan Pro 25q Bungee

Superior Ice Retention

Regarding ice retention, Titan Pro claims the cooler can hold ice for more than six days if its 100% full of ice and packed with the Ice Saver performance booster. But lets be honest: How often do you haul a cooler of just ice? When half-full of ice and half-full of food or drink, the cooler is said to hold ice for three days (four with the Ice Saver performance booster). If thats the case, the Titan Pro cooler rivals other popular hard coolers from brands like Yeti in terms of ice retention.

Microban

For hunters and anglers–and, honestly, anyone concerned with keeping their cooler odor-free–Arctic Zone included Microban technology in the construction of this ice chest. It inhibits the growth of bacteria, which can cause odors and stains. This is an especially great feature for those hauling raw meat or fish in their cooler.

IP65 Waterproof and Dustproof Rating

This cooler holds a rating of IP65, meaning it’s impervious to dust and solid foregin objects, as well as protected against water jets. So, no worries if you’re out at the beach and rain starts to fall, or if your kayak paddle splashes water onto the cooler.

We tested all its features to see if the claims were valid.

How We Tested It

When I unboxed the Titan Pro 25Q Roto Hard Cooler, I was seriously impressed with its overall design. I opted for the driftwood tan color, which is a light beige in person, and I love it. I immediately noticed from the design that the high-performance cooler is made for the outdoors: Its heavy-duty latching system and bungee top clue you in to this. However, I also appreciated the built-in bottle opener and shoulder strap, which make the versatile cooler great for game days and day trips.

Titan Pro 25q Interior Light

I audibly gasped when I opened the cooler and discovered the interior light, which turns on when the lid is lifted. Coincidentally, I opened the cooler for the first time at night, and the LED light completely illuminated the cooler’s interiorno batteries or switches necessary. The cooler light up right out of the box. This is one of my all-time favorite features Ive seen in a cooler, and it would be very handy for nighttime fishing, camping overnight or tailgating in the evening after the sun goes down.

I also noticed the secure latches and tight seal right away. Ensuring your cooler latches properly and has a tight seal helps with ice retention. Some coolers can be difficult to open, close and latch, but the Titan Pro cooler is easy to flip open and snap shut, which is essential when trying to get food and drinks out quickly.

Titan Pro 25q Latch

To test the coolers durability and ice retention, I packed it for a weekend getaway with my family. The cooler stayed sealed shut while moving around in the back of my Subaru, and nothing leaked from the top or drain plug. No condensation appeared anywhere on the outside of the cooler. For the trip, I packed the cooler with two bags.

In other words, I packed it about 3/4 of the way with ice cubes. I could fit eight beverages and a few baggies full of fruits and veggies comfortably, but I could have fit more if I had used less ice. The ice remained intact, and the cooler’s contents stayed cold effortlessly after two days of being in 70+ degree weather. By the third day, about half of the ice was still intact and half of the ice had melted and pooled in the bottom of the cooler.

Some of the ice probably would have lasted longer, but I emptied and unpacked the cooler after returning home and finding the ice half-melted. I recommend using block ice or reusable ice packs for longer-lasting ice to avoid this. Additionally, ice packs wont melt, and cooler contents wont get wet and soggy.

While I think the 25-quart size is perfect for road trips, tailgate parties and days at the beach, Im not sure this size is big enough to hold more than what youd need for a day or two. Of course, that depends on how much ice you use, what you pack and how many people youre packing for. I recommend sizing up to the 55-quart cooler if you want it to hold food and beverages for more than a couple of people or more than a couple of days.

Why You Should Trust Us

Shopping Editor Mary Henn is an expert product tester at Family Handyman. She has tested hundreds of products, including hard and soft coolers from leading brands like Yeti, BruMate, HydroFlask, Oyster, RTIC and more. Mary has extensive experience with the best coolers and often puts them through rigorous tests to compare them. (Check out her comparison of the Oyster Tempo Cooler vs. the Yeti Roadie.) When testing outdoor gear like coolers, she considers performance, quality, added features and overall value.

FAQ

Is Titan as good as Yeti?

Truthfully, I found that the Titan Pro cooler had more built-in features (light, bungee strips, bottle opener, etc.) than other brands Ive tested, and its ice retention was comparable to Yeti coolers. However, Yeti has tons of additional accessories you can add to your cooler (at a price, of course) and more styles and colors of coolers. Yeti also has a number of durable and useful non-cooler items, like the Yeti Loadout Go Box.

How long does ice last in the Titan cooler?

According to the website, the Titan Pro Roto Hard Cooler will hold ice for around six days if it is 100% full of cubed ice. If it is 66% full, it will hold ice for 3-1/2 to 4-1/2 days; if it is 50% full, it will hold ice for 3-4 days. (This swamp cooler hack can help keep the contents of your ice chest colder for longer.)

What Others Have to Say About the Titan Pro Cooler

Other reviews talk about how handy the built-in light is, especially without a headlamp or phone nearby. Additionally, people talk about the coolers impressive ice retention and how its size is perfect for quick weekend getaways. Its great if you have limited space in your car. One reviewer even goes as far as to say its a game-changer in extreme weather. The Titan Pro High Performance 25Q has been absolutely amazing keeping ice for the weekend, even when the outside of the cooler is too hot to even sit on, says John Patrick of Phoenix, Arizona.

Titan Pro 25Q Roto Hard Cooler vs. Titan Pro Leak Proof Welded Cooler

Titan Pro manufactures two kinds of coolers: roto hard coolers and welded coolers (which are launching soon). The Welded Cooler has a more portable body with a hard liner and fabric outer shell. It also has plenty of dry cargo compartments, a tie-down compression strap, an adjustable shoulder strap and two side mesh pockets for carrying all your food and drinks for a long-haul hike.

A smart shelf fits near the top and holds bottles in place while keeping food items from getting wet and soggy. Like the Titan Pro roto hard cooler, the welded cooler has an attached stainless steel bottle opener, antimicrobial protection and high-performance insulation. However, youll sacrifice some other features, like a built-in light and maximum ice retention, for portability.

Final Verdict

Titan Pro 25q Thermal Cover

We have not seen a better cooler for nighttime use in all our cooler testing. If you fish or camp at night, this cooler has unbeatable features. Its ice retention capabilities are on par with those of other roto hard coolers from other big brands. I would only add a set of wheels to this cooler.

When full of ice, the cooler becomes quite heavy for shoulder carrying. However, that shouldn’t be an issue if you dont need to walk far with it. Its ideal for keeping in the back of a truck or on a boat, and the shoulder strap/handle is excellent for carrying the cooler short distances.

Loco Smarttemp Griddle Review Fullsizerender 1 2 Ssedit

Ive been a big fan of outdoor griddles for a handful of years nowreally, Ive been on the griddle bandwagon since the surge in Blackstone popularity several summers ago. And it isn’t hard to see why they’re sweeping the nation. Flat-top grills are great for so many things: Burgers, breakfast, fajitas, fried rice, you name it. There are even portable options for activities like tailgating and camping! As a big Blackstone fan, I was skeptical to give another gas griddle a whirl, but the features of this LoCo flat-top grill caught my attention.

I tested the LoCo SmartTemp Griddle for myself, and let me tell you, I was blown away by the smart temperature regulation, electronic ignition and leveling system. Whether youre a first-time griddle buyer or looking to upgrade your old flat-top grill, heres the full scoop on the LoCo SmartTemp Griddle so you can decide which option is best for you before you buy.

What is the LoCo SmartTemp Griddle?

LoCo Griddles take the guesswork out of outdoor cooking. Most standard outdoor griddles have dials that give you a vague high, medium or low reading, where its difficult to tell what temperature youre actually using. Not with this LoCo SmartTemp Griddle. The temperature control knobs on the LoCo flat-top grill have digital displays that allow you to read and adjust the cooking temperatures in 25-degree increments.

We Tried It

LoCo SmartTemp Griddle

This flat top griddle's technology cooks food at precise temperatures.

More precise cooking temperatures mean less overcooking and undercooking foodand you can follow a recipe more closely. With a two- or three-burner LoCo Griddle, you can cook various foods at different temperatures on each side of the grill. This is great for getting a nice sear on meats at high heat on one side of the grill and cooking veggies at a lower temperature on the other.

But the high-tech features dont stop there. LoCo Griddles have an electronic ignition, leveling system, oversized wheels and more. Keep reading for the full rundown on the LoCo SmartTemp Griddle.

LoCo SmartTemp Griddle Features

In addition to a smart temperature display, this 2-Burner LoCo SmartTemp Griddle has an ignition that allows you to fire up the grill with the push of a button. Its that easy. The built-in leveling system sends grease straight into the drain hole, and a locking system increases safety and stability while cooking.

The cooktop on the LoCo flat-top grill measures 26 inches, which means 530 square inches of cooking surface. In other words, there’s plenty of room to cook for a group of people. The griddle has paper towel and trash bag holders for convenience and organization. However, I found myself putting everything on the two folding side shelves while cooking so that I had everything within arm’s reach.

The hinged lid makes removing and replacing the top of the griddle easy-peasy, and theres no misplacing the top lid either (Ive had this issue before, believe it or not, with other griddles where the lid completely detaches). Theres even a storage cabinet at the bottom of the system that hides the propane tank (which can be an eyesore) and leaves room for other large items you may want to keep below the griddle.

How We Tested It

Loco Smarttemp Griddle Review Fullsizerender How We Tested It Ssedit

As I mentioned, after reading about the smart features of the 26-inch LoCo SmartTemp Griddle, I was excited to get my hands on one. I love having family over for Sunday morning breakfast, and when the weather is nice, cooking and hanging out outside makes it even better. Naturally, I couldnt wait for a Sunday gathering to break my LoCo Griddle in, so my partner and I tested the grill by making breakfast-for-dinner for ourselves first.

Setup

Loco Smarttemp Griddle Review Fullsizerender Setup Ssedit

While I prepped food, my partner wheeled the grill from our garage around the side of our house and through the backyard to the patio. Thankfully, the LoCo flat top grill has four large wheels, so moving it over concrete and grass was easy. Once it was where we wanted it, we hooked up a tank of propane and plugged it in.

At first, I was a little put off by the cord that has to be plugged in (for the digital temperature controls with an LED display to work) because we do not have an outdoor outlet. However, the cord is long and slim enough that we were able to easily plug it in inside with a short extension cord. We even let the door close on it to keep bugs from getting inside, and it didnt cause any issues.

Prep Work

After a smooth setup (our LoCo Griddle came fully assembled thanks to our local hardware store), it was time to get cooking. Well, almosttheres a little bit of prep work that goes into using an outdoor griddle for the first time. First, we wiped down the cooktop with a damp towel to clean it, then we turned on the gas and lit the griddle (which was incredibly easy with the one-touch ignite button). Youll want to set the controls to sear for about 10 to 15 minutes before seasoning your griddle.

The surface of a griddle is just like an unseasoned cast iron skillet, so its important to season the grill top before you cook on it. This process is easy (and necessary). Just take some cooking oil on a rag and rub down your griddle. Be sure to hold the rag with a set of tongs to keep from burning yourself! We did this a few times until the top of the griddle was shiny.

Breakfast for Dinner

When it came time to cook, I tested the new flat top grill with meat (sausage), bread (French toast) and a veggie (hashbrowns) to see how it performed on a variety of food types. On the right side, I cooked French toast to a perfect golden brown between 350 and 375 degrees, on the left side, I cooked sausages at 400 degrees. I placed the hashbrowns at the top where more oil was concentrated, and the temperature ranged between 350 and 400 degrees depending on where I shuffled the hashbrowns.

Breakfast made on Loco Smarttemp Griddle served in a white plate with fork

Cooking breakfast on the patio on a cool evening beats cooking inside, no doubt. Sure, a nice breeze helped, but having a large griddle cooktop allowed me to cook everything (and a lot of it) at once, so cooking time was cut in half. Additionally, food (especially breakfast food) just tastes better over a gas griddleIYKYK.

The hashbrowns were perfectly crisp (and not soggy), the French toast had a great flavor, and the sausages were grilled to perfection (which, in my opinion, leans into burnt territory because thats how breakfast sausage should be cooked). However and whatever you decide to cook, I guarantee youre going to love how it tastes on the LoCo Griddle. Its like a restaurant-quality cooking surface in your backyard.

Lastly, I think the LoCo Griddle looks nicer than even some of the best grills on the market. It has a glossy chalk finish from top to bottom, an enclosed cart with a cabinet door and two folding shelves. It blends seamlessly with existing patio decor or into any outdoor kitchen setup. The base of the grill cart keeps everything enclosed, so you dont have to look at an ugly propane tank or wires.

Pros

  • Smart temperature controls with digital LED display
  • One-touch electronic ignition
  • Cooktop leveling system angles the griddle top to direct grease into the trap
  • Oversized wheels make maneuvering easy
  • Two folding shelves provide large prep area
  • Built-in cooktop locking system
  • Hinged lid and storage cabinet make storing a breeze
  • Looks great, wires and gas tank arent visible thanks to enclosed grill cart
  • More affordable than other name-brand griddles

Cons

  • Griddle must be used within close range of electrical outlet so it can be plugged in

FAQ

Who makes LoCo griddles?

LoCo Cookers makes LoCo Griddles and was founded in 2022. The company is based in the state of Georgia. However, the people behind the brand have spent more than 25 years combined in the outdoor cooking industry. LoCo Cookers manufactures griddles, griddle accessories, fryers and more.

How do you season a LoCo griddle?

I described the seasoning process above, but Ill break it down here step-by-step for convenience:

  • Clean the griddle surface with a damp cloth
  • Preheat LoCo Grill to sear for about 15 minutes
  • Using a towel and pair of tongs, spread cooking oil evenly across the griddle surface
  • Repeat the previous step until the grill is shiny and there are no oil puddles (3-5 times)

LoCo vs. Blackstone Grill

Loco Smarttemp Griddle Review Loco Vs. Blackstone Grill Ssedit

The main difference between LoCo griddles and standard griddles from the competitor brand Blackstone is that the LoCo SmartTemp griddle plugs in to enable an LED display on its dials. The dials provide temperature readings so you know how hot your cooking surface is. Wes Wright, founder and CEO ofCookOut News, says, “For beginners, I would steer them towards LoCo because the temperature control is very helpful.Have you ever noticed when cooking with a pan on the stove that it gradually gets hotter while you cook? SmartTemp solves that problem by regulating the burners to keep the griddle surface at a set temperature.”

Apart from SmartTemp, both grills run on propane and have similar designs regarding storage and side shelves. However, Blackstone just launched apellet-fuel grillif that’s something you’re into. The brand also frequently launches new products and product updates.

If you’re interested in shopping LoCos lineup of griddles, you should know it includes a36-inch, 3-burner griddleand a16-inch tabletop griddle. The26-inch, 2-burner griddlewas convenient for my small backyard patio and had enough space to cook for about five to 10 people at once. If you want the same features as the 26-inch LoCo SmartTemp Griddle but have more outdoor space or plan on cooking for large groups of people frequently, I recommend looking at the 36-inch grill.

If you plan on traveling with your grill or using it for camping or tailgating, the 16-inch griddle packs the power of smart temperature control in a portable grill top. The digital LED display is battery-powered on this smaller model, so you dont have to worry about finding a place to plug in if youre on the go or in the wilderness.

Final Verdict

I 100% recommend the LoCo SmartTemp Griddle. As someone who likes following a recipe and cooking with precision, I dont think theres another outdoor griddle on the market that comes close to the LoCo flat top grill in terms of temperature control, easy ignition, prep space and overall appearance. I did not think I would prefer it over my Blackstone, but most days I do.

On most summer evenings, youll find my best friend at her boat cooking up a storm for friends. The marina doesn’t allow open-flame cooking, however, she’s creative and loves to feed the hungry fishermen almost as much as they love pizza night. So, when I found the electric Ninja Woodfire outdoor oven, I knew we had to test it out for those evenings. With eight versatile cooking methods, the possibilities for feasting are endless.

We Baked, Roasted and Smoked with the Ninja Outdoor Oven

Outdoor pizza ovens are becoming increasingly popular, and our Family Handyman team has tested more than one. But can they make a one-dish meal, smoke ribs or roast a chicken? I was determined to find out.

When I test products, I look for functionality, performance and durability before recommending them. The Ninja Woodfire outdoor oven gets high marks in all three categories, making this pizza oven an exceptional value. I combed through user reviews to find the pitfalls and problems, and when a product seems to pass the sniff test, I try it for myself.

Ninja is a forerunner when it comes to multi-functional appliances. I tested the 8-in-1 Ninja Woodfire outdoor oven by baking pizza, roasting vegetables and cooking proteins on different cooking modes. Plus, I’m no newbie to Ninja products. Ive used the 7-in-1Ninja indoor grill for months and found the features useful. It has even become a beloved appliance in my kitchen.

Another factor is that the product must have a user-friendly interface. The Ninja Woodfire outdoor oven proved to be foolproof for a new user. Unlike my friend, a culinary expert, I want an appliance that isn’t overly complicated for the average hungry bear.

What is the Ninja Woodfire outdoor oven?

If you love the smoky, rich flavor of wood-fired food, you’ll love the versatility of this 8-in-1 electric outdoor oven. The Ninja Woodfire outdoor oven heats up to 700 degrees Fahrenheit, an important ingredient for brick-oven-style pizza and crispy high-heat searing.

This smoker oven uses electricity as fuel rather than wood pellets, so its safe and easy to use. To create that woody smoke flavor, simply add a scoop of Ninja wood pellets to the smokebox located on the side of the unit. Using the wood pellets is optional in any mode and at any temperature. Its clean burning without the mess of gas, charcoal or wood.

This oven comes with a pizza stone for even heating, a roasting rack, the 12-inch-by-12-inch Pro-Heat Pan, an accessory frame, a pellet scoop and a starter pack of pellets. It also includes a helpful Quick Start Guide recipe book.

This oven has a beautiful copper-colored finish on the weather-proof powder-coated steel exterior. The unit is compact, standing approximately 14.5 inches high by 16.5 inches wide by 22 inches deep (including the handle). The interior dimensions are 13 inches wide by 13 inches deep, and from the lowest rack position, it has 6 inches of clearance to the top of the oven. So, whether youre smoking a brisket or baking a 9-inch-by-12-inch pan of lasagna, youre in luck: It’ll fit!

The 8-in-1-derful Features on the Ninja Woodfire Oven

Ninja Woodfire Outdoor Oven Features

The Ninja outdoor oven is more than a wood-fired pizza oven. It has two roasting modes: Specialty slow roast is for large cuts of meat suitable for a crowd while the 700-degree Fahrenheit high heat Max Roast mode is for quick charring and cooking smaller portions and veggies. While the star of this outdoor oven is the pizza mode, it can also broil, smoke, bake, dehydrate and keep food warm.

The oven has five pizza settings customized for your favorite crust. So, whether you prefer thin crust, Neapolitan, New York style, pan pizza or frozen pizza, your pie will bake to perfection. The handy user guide is full of cooking charts and recipes, including homemade crusts and gluten-free options. And if you enjoy wood-fired pizza, just add pellets for a Tuscan touch of flavor.

Pros

  • Eight ways to cook almost anything
  • Intuitive user experience
  • Low smoke output
  • Cooking charts and recipes included
  • Cook with or without smoke flavor
  • Year-round outdoor storage
  • No-mess electric operation
  • Heats up to 700 degrees Fahrenheit

Cons

  • Oven clearance is low
  • Short power cord
  • Must use Ninja brand wood pellets

How We Tested the Ninja Woodfire Outdoor Oven

Making Pizza on Marble surface

My friend, Jeanette, makes the best pizza ever. So, naturally, I asked her to help me test this Ninja Woodfire outdoor oven using her Sicilian grandmothers recipes. We used the Neapolitan setting, and the unit pre-heated in about 15 minutesfaster than expected. The user-friendly screen alerts you when it is time to add food. After three minutes of cooking, we put the pizza back in for two more minutes for a crunchier crust. We cooked three pizzas, including one with a thin crust, and the results were fabulous.

Ninja Woodfire Outdoor Oven

The Ninja cooks evenly and efficiently. I was thankful we had the pizza peel because the oven is very hot, and the clearance between the open door and the bottom shelf is tight. I recommend wearing grilling gloves or mitts to avoid the danger of burning your knuckles when pulling out the tray.

Putting Pizza into Ninja Woodfire Outdoor Oven

Jeanette gave the Ninja five stars for even heating, excellent flavor and ease of use. Shes particular about her culinary equipment and plans to use it not only for pizza nights and smoking fish on the boat, but also for roasting, warming and baking her famous cherry pies.

BBQ Smoker Mode

Pouring Smoke Wood Pellets into Ninja Woodfire Outdoor Oven

Next, I was excited to add the smoky flavor to chicken thighs, so I chose the BBQ Smoker mode and added the wood pellets. I consulted the cooking chart in the Quick Start Guide and set the temperature to 375 degrees Fahrenheit. Dinner was ready in less than 30 minutes. I used a Yummly smart thermometer to monitor the internal temperatures of the meat, and Ninja’s cooking time and temperature settings proved accurate.

Ninja doesnt recommend using sugary marinades or barbecue sauce that could burn while cooking, so I used a simple salt and pepper seasoning. The wood-smoked flavor was a savory and robust complement to the protein. The skin was crispy and the meat tender, similar to an oven-baked chicken. At 375 degrees, the chicken didnt char like it would cooking with the Max Roast mode.

Max Roast Mode

The next dish I prepared was a gift from the fishermen. My goal was to attain a seared and grilled texture on the fish, so I opted for the Max Roast setting. I set the temperature to 600 degrees Fahrenheit and the timer for 10 minutes. Pre-heating took 20 minutes, and then I added the salmon seasoning side down to sear it. It was done in 5 minutes, with no need to flip.

Fair warning: Cleanup isn’t a breeze. The interior is hard to wipe down because of the crevices and coils. The grate is dishwasher safe, but the Pro-Heat pan is not.

I continued to use the Ninja Outdoor Oven for grilled vegetables, smoked pork chops and fish. We have yet to bake bread, pies or casseroles in it, and I look forward to making sun-dried tomatoes using the dehydrate mode with that delicious wood-fire flavor.

FAQ

Can the Ninja Woodfire be stored outside?

Ninja Woodfire Outdoor Oven covered with its cover

This Ninja oven is an outdoor appliance with a powdered-coated, rust-resistant finish. I recommend buying the waterproof cover to prolong the life of the oven and keep it looking sharp. The portability and small footprint of this outdoor oven make it easy to tuck into a corner of the patio or sit on a garage shelf when not in use.

Does the Ninja Woodfire have to be plugged in?

The Ninja Woodfire outdoor oven, like the Ninja Woodfire grill, must be plugged into a GFCI plug when using an extension cord suitable for outdoor appliances.

What Other Reviewers Had to Say

Jessica F. gave the Ninja outdoor oven five stars on the Ninja Kitchen website. I love how easy the instruction book is to read and follow,” she writes. “It includes basic recipes for beginners to help ease into the outdoor oven. The package also included a pack of wood-fire pellets. The all-purpose blend flavor gave our roast a mild wood-fire flavor and turned our mac-n-cheese into the most flavorful mac-n-cheese we have ever had! The smoker feature is the best feature, in my opinion!

“I love my Ninja Woodfire 8-in-1 outdoor oven,” shares Robert, another five-star reviewer. “This does it all. It even makes pizza. This oven can get really hot if you want, so plug into a strong plug or use a heavy extension to handle the power. There is enough space in the oven to cook for the whole family and then some. This is so much better, healthier and safer than using my old barbecue.

Ninja Woodfire Outdoor Oven Accessories

Ninja Woodfire Outdoor Oven Accessories

I was also able to test the accessories for the outdoor oven (sold separately), and my favorite is the Ninja perforated pizza peel. This $30 utensil is a must-have item to get pizza in and out of the oven easily. Its perfectly sized for the oven, and the handle is the ideal length for maneuvering while still avoiding the heat.

The premium oven cover is a snug weather-proof cover constructed with elastic and drawstrings for secure outdoor storage. For $25, you can’t go wrong with this custom-fit cover.

Lastly, the Ninja Woodfire adjustable outdoor stand is a weather-resistant plastic stand that assembles quickly. The leg height is adjustable, but honestly, I would rather have casters on the stand to easily move it around the patio. And if you want a larger work surface, simply add the attachable table for an extra $25.

Final Verdict

Cooking pizza with this oven is fast, easy and fun. I’m especially impressed with the options for crust preferences and the control panel, which is intuitive and elegant in every cooking mode. The wood-fire smoke adds an enhanced level of flavor without the time or mess of traditional barbecue smokers and grills.

The Ninja Woodfire outdoor oven is a perfect all-in-one appliance for outdoor kitchen and backyard fun. It keeps the house cool and the party outdoors. The wood smoke, high heat and searing options make this multi-functional appliance a superior choice. Plus, it cooks faster than traditional smokers and delivers the same savory taste that would normally take hours.

Its compact tabletop size makes it portablealthough its a little bulky to load in the car for a day on the dock, weighing in at 32 pounds, the fishermen are happy to help. The only downside for me is the danger of pulling out the accessory frame without insulated grilling gloves.

I enjoy trying the recipes and experimenting with the eight cooking modes and smoky flavors. The multi-purpose functionality that this outdoor oven provides, along with the solid weather-proof design, is worth the money.

Tips for Cleaning a Pellet Grill https://www.familyhandyman.com/article/tips-for-cleaning-a-pellet-grill/ Fri, 22 Mar 2024 21:09:54 +0000 https://www.familyhandyman.com/?p=548417 You spent a lot of money on your pellet grill, so treat it right and keep it clean! Here's how.

The post Tips for Cleaning a Pellet Grill appeared first on Family Handyman.

]]>
As a professional BBQ competitor and certified judge, I’m always looking at what other teams are doing, what equipment they choose, and what winning teams do differently.

Many teams use pellet grills, like a Traeger, because of how easy they are to use and how well they impart delicious smoke flavor on food. The president of the largest BBQ organization in the world, the Kansas City BBQ Society, uses pellet grills. His team name is Pellet Envy!

Like any tool, the better you take care of your pellet grill, the longer it will last, and the better it will work. If you don’t clean it after every few cooks, it may not work properly, and your food could taste like dirty smoke.I call that going from Grill Hero to Grill Zero!

Supplies Needed To Clean a Pellet Grill

Use a Brush To Scrape the Grates

Start by taking the brush and scraping off the grates. Ideally, you’ll brush the grates while they’re still hot after a cook, but you can also heat up the grill just for cleaning. All grill brushes work well, except metal brushes. If a piece of metal wire comes off and gets in your food, that can be really dangerous.

Wait Until the Grill Cools Down

After brushing the grates, turn the grill off, leave the lid open and let it cool down.

Take Out the Removable Parts Inside the Grill

Pellet grills have removable parts to make cleaning easier. Take out these pieces, including the cover to the burn pot. Take a photo of where everything is and how each part is installed.

Scrape the Inner Walls

Use a scraper on the sides and inner lid to remove stuck-on chunks of soot and food. Don’t scrape so hard that you scratch it, though. Simply dislodge anything that isn’t already laying loose at the bottom of the grill.

Vacuum Out the Inside

With a shop vacuum, suck up as much dust and soot as you can, including inside the burn pot. You’ll never get it all so don’t expect your grill to look brand new.

Spray Down the Inside

Spray the inside with a grill cleaner and wipe it down with paper towels. Again, you’re never going to get it all, but wipe off as much as you can. It’s crucial you use a grill cleaner, not any other household product. You don’t want chemicals affecting your grilled food.

Make sure you spray and clean the internal thermometer probe really well. If there’s too much buildup on the thermometer, the sensor could register an inaccurate reading, changing how your grill cooks.

Put All the Parts Back Inside

Re-install all the parts properly, including the burn pot cover. Let the photo you took earlier be your guide.

Before You Cook Again, Heat Up Your Grill

Before your next cook, let your grill run hot at 250 degrees or higher for at least 15 minutes to burn off any cleaning chemicals left behind.

This deep cleaning method takes about 15 minutes once you’ve done it a few times. The extra TLC for your pellet grill will keep the food tasting great for years to come!

Final Note: Keep Your Pellet Grill Dry

Never let unused pellets get wet, because they’ll expand and jam up your grill. Never spray down your pellet grill with a hose. It won’t get it as clean as you want, and you might inadvertently spray the pellets. Plus, wet dust and soot inside a grill can turn into a hard-to-remove paste.

Since its first kettle grill came on the market in 1952, Weber has been one of the best grill brands on the market. It’s evolved far past charcoal grills in the 70+ years since, developing a wide range of styles including gas, electric and pellet grills. Known for their rock-solid durability, smart features, and ease of use, Weber grills are as beloved by the pros as backyard barbecuers. Weber offers solid multi-year warranties and great customer service.

While the Weber Original Kettle Charcoal Grill is a classic choice, we love the upgraded features of the Weber’s deluxe charcoal grill. It’s set into a stand on wheels, making it simple to position on a deck or patio. Even though this is acharcoal grill, it has a gas ignition system that makes lighting briquettessimple. The round kettle style performs well as a smoker by letting you line up the top vent to pull smoke over the food.

I go camping every summer, and one thing always stays the same: camping food rocks. Nothing beats pulling up a camping chair next to the fire and chowing down on delicious dishes like chili mac or spam and eggs. While frying over open flames is my preferred cooking method, a good-quality camping stove is a solution for a fast breakfast or pot of coffee. That’s why I love this Amazon camping stove.

What is the Amazon camping stove?

Camping Stove on Wooden Surface

This Amazon camping stove is a small, portable cooker that connects to 7/16 thread butane and propane fuel canisters. It delivers a blaze that’s ideal for cooking up almost any camp food, including sizzling soups and perfectly seared burgers. Because the camping stove is small enough to fit in a palm, it packs up easily for on-the-go meals.

A refined aluminum alloy body resists rust, so this camp stove is even safe to use in the rain. On the side, a built-in flame control valve regulates the amount of heat used. That means different dishes can cook at different temperatures. The camp stove also boasts a built-in ignitor, so there’s no need to pack lighters or matches.

How to Use the Amazon Camping Stove

Using the Amazon camp stove is incredibly easy. First, unfold the camp stove to reveal the four legs. That’s where the pot will balance during cooking. Then, simply screw it on a butane or propane canister to secure it. Once secure, slightly open the regulator to let out a thin stream of gas. Click the ignitor to start the stove, and voila! Because it’s simple to operate, it makes a great gift for outdoor lovers.

We love that this Amazon camp stove is easier to start and more portable than stoves like the Biolite camp stove, while still retaining most of the same functionality.

Pros

  • Portable size
  • Lightweight
  • Easy to set up
  • Inexpensive at only $11

Cons

  • Cooking surface is small

What Reviewers Are Saying

“I researched several camping stoves before purchasing this one, even asking in several hiking communities for recommendations,” notes a verified purchaser. They write, “Several brands were recommended, but many people had this one and offered a few tips for it as well! I was skeptical because this was so much cheaper than the other stoves, but I finally bit the bullet and just bought it.

We just used it for our first hiking trip and Im very happy with this one! We have a lot of money invested in our backpacking gear, but this goes to show you dont have to spend $80 for the same ignition piece. It screwed on easily to the propane tank and turned on effortlessly.

You can adjust the flame, the more you turn it, the higher the flame. When we used it this past weekend, the weather was very windy and the flame stayed strong. Once you screw the igniter onto the tank, the arms slide around into place. Then there are pieces at the top that flip out to keep your pot securely on top.

The one recommendation from the hiking community was to bring a lighter just in case it doesnt light on its own. Some have experienced this issue. Personally, I have not used it enough to have this issue but I keep a lighter in my pack anyway.

Overall, Id buy this again. It works great, its very light/portable and the best bang for your buck.”

Lump Charcoal vs. Briquettes: What’s the Difference? https://www.familyhandyman.com/article/lump-charcoal-vs-briquettes/ Fri, 22 Mar 2024 03:20:34 +0000 https://www.familyhandyman.com/?p=535869 Are you ready to get serious about grilling? The first step is knowing which fuel to use. Let's talk about briquettes vs lump charcoal.

The post Lump Charcoal vs. Briquettes: What’s the Difference? appeared first on Family Handyman.

]]>
For the past five years, I have traveled the country cooking in more than 60 grilling and smoking competitions. I’ve tried just about everything the grilling world has to offer in my quest to find the best possible taste, cook the best meat I can and win the coveted Grand Championship. I and all my competitors know that getting the best results on the grill starts with the heat source you are using to cook.

Take it from someone who has seen and tasted it all it really does matter.

The art of grilling has so many personal preferences, variables and options that rarely is there a clear-cut best-choice option. The debate between briquettes and lump charcoal is an exception to this rule, however. Experienced grill masters almost universally prefer lump charcoal over briquettes. Lump charcoal may be the clear-cut choice on the grilling scene, but let’s talk about what these choices are and what makes them different before you decide what is best for you.

What are Charcoal Briquettes?

Briquettes are the most common fuel source for grilling. They are probably what you grew up on, can be found just about anywhere grilling supplies are sold, and are likely what most people are comfortable using. Briquettes are made by combining sawdust, coal dust and some type of binder to help form and maintain their consistent square shape. Some manufacturers have recently started adding flavor options to their briquettes like mesquite, applewood, cherry or hickory wood splinters. If you’re a casual backyard griller, briquettes can cook incredible food and have some real advantages, like cost and availability.

What is Lump Charcoal?

Lump charcoal is similar to briquettes with a few major differences. Lump charcoal consists of actual pieces of wood they are not just a mold of dust. Lump charcoal is made by charring the pieces of wood in a low oxygen kiln, an oven that is designed to only char the wood without actually burning up the pieces. The chunks will come out completely black but won’t be burned or reduced in size like you would see on burned wood in say a bonfire.

Because they are made from real pieces of wood, every lump of charcoal can be a different size. This can take a little getting used to, but before long the shape and sizes won’t be a factor.

Briquettes vs Lump Charcoal

Now that you know the difference between the two versions of coal, let’s talk about what each one offers and how you can decide which is best for you.

Briquette pros

  • Briquettes are readily available and can be found in any BBQ store as well as many hardware stores, Target, Walmart, even gas stations;
  • Briquettes are usually a less costly option for grilling, especially for those of us who use our grills often;
  • The size and shape of briquettes are consistent and very easy to use.

Briquette cons

  • In order to create a consistent shape and size, briquettes use a binder and are not pure wood;
  • Briquettes can get hot, but they do not have the ability to get to extremely high temperatures;
  • Briquettes leave behind a large amount of ash.

Lump charcoal pros

  • Lump charcoal is made from pure wood chunks, there are no additives to the wood;
  • Lump charcoal can get extremely hot which offers additional cooking uses;
  • Less ash is created from lump charcoal;
  • At lower temperatures, lump charcoal can burn longer than briquettes.

Lump charcoal cons

  • Within every bag of lump charcoal the wood chunks will be a variety of sizes and shapes;
  • The cost of lump charcoal is very often higher than briquettes.

So Which Fuel is Better for You?

Choose briquettes if you’re looking for a fuel that you’re already familiar with, is easy to find, has a consistent size and burn, and doesn’t hurt your wallet. If you want a super hot or long fire, if you are trying to take the taste of your food up a notch, or if you want a less frequent, easier clean up then lump charcoal could be your solution. Both are great sources of heat for your grill, and they are both here to stay. At the end of the day, if you love cooking like I do I really encourage you to try something new!

Yummly Smart Meat Thermometer

Lately, Ive been interested in elevating my culinary skills. The experts all agree that a food thermometer is an essential tool for experienced chefs and, more importantly, easily intimidated, wannabe cooks like me. So its logical that I would want a thermometer thats smarter than me to make me fearless in the kitchen. Luckily, I found the Yummly smart thermometer, which is supposedly the next big thing to help you cook the perfect pork chop or cut of steak. I’ll be the judge of that!

What is the Yummly smart thermometer?

Yummly Smart Meat Thermometer

The Yummly smart thermometer is a leave-in, probe-style meat thermometer that connects wirelessly via Bluetooth to a free app on your phone or tablet. As long as the device is within 150 feet of the thermometer and dock, you can monitor temperatures and get alerts to tell you when its time to flip the food, change the temperature or let the meat rest.

This versatile thermometer works in the oven, on the grill, with a smoker or on the stovetop. The overall length of the thermometer is 4.25 inches, including the 3-inch stainless steel probe. The thermometer sits in a sleek plastic dock that charges the thermometer when not in use, and connects to the Yummly app on your smart device. The dock has a button for pairing and lights to indicate power status and connectivity.

We Tried It

Yummly Smart Thermometer

Take the guesswork out of cooking and get the results you want with the wireless Yummly smart thermometer and intuitive app.

Yummly Smart Thermometer Features

The Yummly smart thermometer measures internal temperatures up to 210 degrees Fahrenheit and handles heat as high as 572 degrees Fahrenheit. Additionally, Yummly promises 25 hours of continuous cooking between charges.

Fhm Yummly Smart Meat Thermometer App Screenshots

The Yummly app is user friendly with options to select the type and cut of meat and your preferred level of doneness. The thermometer does the rest, notifying you along the way. Plus, you can connect up to four Yummly thermometers to accommodate varying levels of doneness. With Yummly, every steak can be made to order and done to perfection.

The dock is a slim and sturdy unit with a clear plastic cover. On the back of the dock, youll find a removable extractor tool to safely pull the thermometer out of the hot meat. Another clever feature is that the dock is magnetic, so it’s easy to hang it on your refrigerator or grill, which comes in handy because the dock needs to be within 5 feet of the thermometer to connect to the app.

How We Tested It

Fhm Yummly Smart Meat Thermometer App Screenshots

The setup for the Yummly smart thermometer was as simple as inserting the included AAA batteries into the Yummly dock and charging the thermometer for 30 minutes. In the meantime, I downloaded the Yummly app and paired my phone with the thermometer. The app is intuitive and walks you through the steps, asking what youre cooking, the cut and your preferred doneness. It calculates the cooking time and reports the internal, ambient and target temperatures.

Img 6492 1

To start, I grilled a large pork butt roast and set the Yummly smart thermometer for medium doneness. The grill was on the back patio, about 50 feet from the front deck where we were hanging out and enjoying the lake. The Yummly had no problem keeping me informed of the status. After I got a nice sear on the roast, I set the grill on slow, low heat, inserted the probe and waited for the internal temperature to reach 150 degrees Fahrenheit. When it was finally time to cut into the 4-pound roast, it was actually medium-rare. I chalked it up to beginner error, but in retrospect, the meat may have been too thick for the short probe.

My next test was using the Yummly to monitor chicken on the Ninja Woodfire outdoor oven. Having the notifications on my phone freed me up to do other things, and the chicken turned out perfect, thanks to the smart thermometer.

Six weeks passed before I used the Yummly smart thermometer again. To my delight, it connected seamlessly. The filet mignon cooked to perfection and brought back my confidence as a cook.

Pros

  • Bluetooth wireless connectivity
  • 150-foot connectivity range
  • Monitors 24 hours of continuous cooking
  • Easy to use
  • Free intuitive app and notifications
  • Display it on the fridge with the magnetic dock
  • App connects up to four thermometers
  • Extractor tool tucks into the dock

Cons

  • Short probe may not work for thick cuts
  • Probe is thick
  • Can’t be exposed to flames

FAQ

Is the Yummly smart thermometer accurate?

I tested the accuracy of the Yummly smart thermometer by dipping the probe in 2.5 inches of ice water and watched the temperature drop on the app to 34 degrees Fahrenheit. Likewise, I watched the temperature quickly rise to 94 degrees Fahrenheit when I stuck it under my leg while sitting at my desk. I also compared the temperature readings with the smart thermometer on the Ninja indoor grill with the same results.

The temperature sensor is in the middle of the 3-inch stainless probe. As a result, if the middle of the meat is deeper than 1.5 inches (like our huge butt roast), the thermometer cant detect the true internal temperature of the meat. However, for standard cuts of meat, the Yummly works great and the temperature is accurate.

Can you use Yummly without a subscription?

The Yummly app is free and required for the smart thermometer to work, but a subscription is not mandatory. The free app is brimming with locked paywall Pro features enticing users to subscribe. If you like personalized recipes, shopping list tools and meal-planning tips, upgrading to the Pro app is the way to go for just 99 cents a month.

Can the Yummly smart thermometer go in the oven?

Yes, the Yummly smart thermometer is oven safe up to 570 degrees Fahrenheit. Its also suitable for use with air fryers, grills, smokers and the stovetop.

What Other Reviewers Had to Say

With over 2,100 ratings on Amazon alone, the Yummly smart thermometer has earned an average of 4.3 out of five stars. Here’s what real-life users have to say:

Cooked two prime ribeyes last night. It was amazing the information the probe sent back to my phone,” writes five-star reviewer, James Gregory. “It showed the temp in my grill, the food temp, how long it would take to reach medium rare, told me when to turn the steaks and when to take them up. They were perfectly cooked to medium-rare. Absolutely love this technology. It make cooking perfectly cooked foods a breeze.”

Trusted our Thanksgiving dinner to Yummly,” shares verified purchaser, Randy Hyken. I was skeptical at first, but it worked great! On a turkey, the proper location to place the probe is above the joint in the leg. This is the part of a turkey that is the last to reach temperature. Ive also used it in a thick New York strip and it was near perfect. I like the app, too!

Eric Powell, another five-star reviewer, says I’ve learned a couple things by using this thermometer, the most eye opening of which is the temperature inside my oven is all over the place. The other thing I learned is cooking by time is really inaccurate. I am most impressed by how well cooking salmon to exact temperature creates perfection! And don’t get me started about my grilled steaks… they’ve always been good, but now they’re incredible! I’m getting hungry. The software tells you when to remove your item from the heat and even has a rest timer. If you’re going to flip your food, it can tell you when to do that, too.”

Product Comparison

There is a newer Yummly smart thermometer that has a few upgrades from the one I tested here. It has a longer battery life to monitor temperatures for up to 43 hours, so its ideal for chefs who love using a smoker. The gadget also features upgraded temperature sensors and an extended range of up to 165 feet, with the ability to share data on a second device with the broadcast sharing feature. Additionally, Yummly includes expanded categories of fish and wild game with the upgrade.

The newer version is compatible with IOS 15 or later and Android 7.0 or later, versus the original model that’s backward compatible with IOS 13 or later and Android 4.4 or later.

The latest dock has changed slightly from the original version, lacking the extraction tool that neatly stows away on the back of the dock, the pairing button and separate lights to indicate Bluetooth connectivity and power. If you’re on a budget, grab the original version.

Final Verdict

The Yummly smart thermometer is an attractive and sleek package, and the dock and probe are substantial and well made. The countdown for the estimated time remaining helps the cook prepare side dishes and makes timing a meal a breeze. I love the wireless connectivity and how easily the app sets up a cooking session and tracks it along the way, freeing me up to do other things while dinner is cooking.

Novice cooks (like me!) can use all the help they can get, and the Yummly smart thermometer is a useful helper in my kitchen. Honestly, Ive never had the courage to cook an expensive filet mignon until now. Yummly gave me the confidence to try, and Im so glad I did.

Football season is officially in full swing, and whether you love watching the sport or just enjoy partaking in pre-game festivities, odds are youll find yourself (or someone you know) tailgating this fall. From the best coolers to a tailgate table and other tailgating gear, there are a handful of items that help turn tailgating into a memorable experience for all.

Without a doubt, having a way to cook food and feed hungry fans is a surefire way to keep the party alive. Thats why we think the Everdure Cube is the ultimate game-day companion.

What is the Everdure Cube grill?

Everdure Cube

The Everdure Cube is a portable charcoal grill that has a bamboo prep board and food storage compartment on top. Its compact and lightweight, and it has two handles for easy carrying and lifting. The whole system locks into place before and after use with two side latches, so you dont have to worry about charcoal and ash spilling all over your trunk or backseat.

You can also use this Everdure grill on any surface: table, ground, truck bedyou name it. The Cube has a built-in heat protection shield that makes it the perfect tabletop grill. (Its heat shield also keeps the bottom from getting too hot to the touch, which can be a problem if you have small hands nearby.) You dont have to sacrifice grilling space for portability, either. The Cube has 115 square inches of grilling space, which is enough for six small burgers or three steaks. Its ideal for tailgating or camping with a handful of people.

The Cube comes in five trendy colors: khaki, matte black, stone, orange and graphite. And the charcoal tray, fire box and removable grill rack make cleaning a breeze.

How to Use the Everdure Cube Grill

Ever grab a propane tank for tailgating or camping only to find out that its empty when you go to use it? This happened to me at the first tailgating event of the season this yearand let me tell you, people were not pleased. With the Cube, theres no need for gas or propane because it uses charcoal for fuel. The mini charcoal grill is designed to cook with lump charcoal or charcoal briquettes.

The Everdure Cube is easy to assemble and doesnt leave behind a mess. The porcelain enamel firebox is easy to store, setup, cook with and clean, and the alloy steel construction is designed to last for years. All you need is the grill, charcoal and food, and youre good to go. Use the cutting board on top to prep meats, veggies and more, and then use it as a serving tray. The storage container underneath holds food and tools for convenience.

If you’re wondering how it performs, the small barbecue grill was designed by famous British chef, Heston Blumenthal, who’s known for his work in outdoor cooking. With the easy-to-use Cube, you get rich flavor in a stylish, safe and compact system.

The Best Amazon User Reviews

Real-life customers love the Everdure Cube for its durability, performance and ease of use. Heres what Amazon reviewers have to say.

All aspects were great! Portable with good grill size! Very durable also,” says five-star reviewer, Tim Donahue.

Totally worth the price because it is very easy to clean, compact for easy storage and, best of all, it doesn’t take much charcoal or lighter fluid, so it heats in a short amount of time, writes verified purchaser, Jody Buenger. Perfect for one or two people. Love the modern look of it as well.

Amazing mini grill,” shares another five-star reviewer, Shaleek Finley. “Portable, sturdy and easy to clean. My 6-year-old son is learning to grill. He loves it. And for some reason, one of my favorite features is that the bottom of the grill does not get hotThis was a great investment, and I will recommend it for anyone. The only negative is that you can’t smoke food because there is no lid.

All function basically the same way, and they all need to be cleaned after each use.

Wait, don't cringe! I'm here to show you how to clean a flat top grill in a few simple steps so it's always ready for your next great meal.

Cast iron, ceramic and stainless steel cooking surfaces will serve you and your family well for many years when cared for properly. And you'll be a happy chef, because your food will stick less and taste better when prepared on a clean flat top.

When is the best time to clean your flat top grill? Right after you finish cooking. The cooking surface is still hot, and the food bits haven't had time to bond to the surface.

Now, if you're like me, you're thinking, "My food is hot, and I can't wait to sit down and eat it." Believe me, cleaning your flat top doesn't take long. And the cleaner you keep your grill, the less time it takes.

So let's get started.

Tools and Materials for cleaning a grill

Scrape the surface

  • Scrape the entire cooking surface of your flat top grill. This will pull up any loose food bits, along with the remaining oil or grease.
  • Scrape and move the debris into the grease collection bin for easy disposal.

Being the designated Pit Boss of any outdoor gathering is an honor, which is why a grill brush is a summertime staple. There’s something to be said about leaning over one of the best grills while in charge of cooking everyone’s burgers. The only downside is when it comes time to clean up. Scraping off baked-on food and charred bits uses a lot of elbow grease, and it’s almost impossible to remove all of the crusties.

If that sounds familiar, it’s time to put down that wire grill brush and opt for something with a little more power. You need the Grand Grill Daddy grill cleaning brush. This steam-powered brush makes cleaning up after any barbecue a breeze.

What is the Grand Grill Daddy grill cleaning brush?

The Grand Grill Daddy grill cleaning brush isn’t your grandpa’s grill brush. This powerful scrubber uses steam to melt off baked-on messes and other residue with ease. It doesn’t require additional grill cleaners to work! We love the inclusion of an ergonomic handle that prevents arm fatigue and allows a strong grip for aggressive scrubbing should you need itbut we don’t think you will.

At 17 inches long, this massive brush is constructed from durable aluminum alloy and weighs a mere three pounds. It’s safe for any type of outdoor grill, including cast iron and ceramic. One side of the cleaner features a wide brush pad, while the tip of the tool has a smaller, equally stiff brush for hard-to-reach areas. Both brush pads are removable and dishwasher-safe.

How to Use It

Just like other grilling tools, the Grand Grill Daddy grill cleaning brush is relatively simple to operate. Make sure the water valve is in the “off” position. Then, unscrew the water chamber cap and fill the interior of the brush with filtered or unfiltered water. After that, tighten the cap until it’s snug. Once it’s filled, the Grand Grill Daddy is ready to use!

It’s necessary to preheat the grill prior to scrubbing. The heat from the grill is what causes the steam, so preheating is the most important step aside from adding water. Preheating the grill may not be possible with attachments like the Solo Stove cast iron grill top, so use the brush right after grilling while the grates are still hot.

To start cleaning, turn the water valve to the “on” position. The grill tool releases a measured amount of water as you scrub, which turns to steam as it comes into contact with the hot grill plates. If more steam is needed for extra-tough messes, simply loosen the fill cap a little.

Cleaning with the brush couldn’t be easierjust scrub the grill and the steam does the rest. Flip the brush over to tackle hard-to-clean areas with the smaller precision head. Once the grill is clear of debris, pop the brush heads into the dishwasher, drain out any residual water and ensure the water valve remains in the “on” position. It’s travel-friendly, so it’s the perfect companion for your portable grill.

The Best Amazon User Reviews

Amazon reviewers comment on how easy it is to clean their grills with the Grand Grill Daddy grill cleaning brush. “I am the person that grills in our home, for me and my husband and for up to 40 people sometimes,” writes verified purchaser Kevin A. He goes on to say, “We have two grills. None of the usual brushes EVER got the grill clean. This brush is brilliant.”

“The hotter the grill, the better it works. The water comes out only if you press it down.” He notes that ordering replacement heads “will not be needed for at least another year.”

Fhm We Tried It Omaha Steaks Meat Subscription Box

Best Overall Meat Subscription Box

Omaha Steaks

I knew Omaha Steaks was my top choice for meat subscription boxes when I overcooked a New York strip and it was still buttery, tender and as delicious as a medium-rare steak. That should tell you everything you need to know about this fifth-generation family-owned business that sources all of its meat from Midwest farms.

My shipment included a variety of meats, including some burgers, bacon-wrapped pork, tenderloin steaks and some side dishes. A quick note on the side dishes: You owe it to yourself to try their caramel apple tartlet, with a scoop of vanilla ice cream, of course. The scalloped potatoesthinly sliced spuds with cream and cheeseare microwaveable and are a tasty and decadent accompaniment to any dish.

There are only two things I didn’t like, one of them being the Styrofoam packaging my delivery came in. This is more of a personal thing, but I’d prefer a more environmentally friendly box than that. The second is that some of my meat had some weird cuts on them, almost as if the butcher started to butterfly cut the meat but stopped about a quarter of the way through.

Omaha Steaks has been in business for more than a century and in the same family for five generations, so they know a thing or two about high-quality steaks. The Nebraska-based meat masters offer countless giftable boxes for birthdays, anniversaries, business events or just to have something nice and juicy to throw on the grill. You could spend hours perusing their selection, which included sirloins for barbecues and skirt steaks for people who prefer meats that take well to marinades. If you want the best-of-the-best, go for their Private Reserve cuts. These handpicked cuts, including dry-aged and Wagyu steaks, are top-of-the-line when it comes to marbling and tenderness.

This brand is a little more expensive than similar services, but the value is unmatched, in my opinion. I recommend checking around major holidays when there are multiple offers and sales to help you save money.

Pros

  • High-quality meat
  • Wide selection of cuts
  • Sourced from Midwest U.S. farms
  • Quick and fresh delivery

Cons

  • On the expensive side

Thousands of Campers Are Replacing Their Gas Grills with This Rugged Rocket Stove https://www.familyhandyman.com/article/ecozoom-rocket-stove-versa/ Fri, 12 May 2023 16:39:10 +0000 https://www.familyhandyman.com/?p=540165 Thousands of campers are already replacing their electric camping stoves with this portable rocket stove that uses wood and charcoal.

The post Thousands of Campers Are Replacing Their Gas Grills with This Rugged Rocket Stove appeared first on Family Handyman.

]]>
I grew up camping every summer. In that time I’ve learned a thing or two about roughing it, including the importance of a good camping stove. Sure, food cooked over an open flame tastes amazing, but there are few things less reliable than an open flame in the fickle Midwest weather. While gas grills are good for cooking, hauling around a propane tank limits cookouts to the campsite. That’s why I’m securing the EcoZoom rocket stove for easy meals on the trail.

What is the EcoZoom Versa rocket stove?

The EcoZoom rocket stove is a lightweight, portable camp stove that uses several different readily-available fuel sources, including twigs, branches, charcoal and wood. Thanks to the well-insulated vertical fuel chamber, it takes less fuel and time to cook a meal than other camp stoves that are twice the size. Like the Family Handyman-approved Solo Stove Bonfire, the EcoZoom Versa produces less smoke than other outdoor cookers, making it an eco-friendly alternative to gas grills.

BioLite produces some of the best camping stoves, including the editor-reviewed BioLite FirePit+ and CampStove. The EcoZoom rocket stove is similar to its other products, with a few key differences. Unlike the FirePit+, the rocket stove weighs in at only 14.25 pounds. It’s the perfect choice for cooking on the trail. Stainless steel handles with silicone grips on each side make it easy to move the stove around, even while it’s running. The stove itself is heavily insulated, so it stays cool to the touch even while running.

Shop Now

How do you use the EcoZoom rocket stove?

It’s easy to use the EcoZoom rocket stove once it’s set up. The L-shaped stove has two doors in the front: one is for feeding in sticks, charcoal and wood, and the other stays open to allow oxygen to flow through the stove. A wire feeder sits in front of the combustion chamber door, so feeding in long sticks and pieces of wood isn’t a difficult task.

Add a handful of biomass to the combustion chamberscavenged sticks or twigs work fineand ignite them. Don’t add too much fuel, or the oxygen flow may suffocate and make it difficult to light a flame. In no time a healthy, roaring fire will peek out of the top of the stove. At this point, it’s time to load up a skillet with spam and eggs, balance it on top of the three-pronged cast iron top and start cooking!

Pros

  • Easy to use
  • Lightweight
  • Multiple fuel sources
  • Handles for easy relocation
  • Durable cast iron materials
  • Burns much longer than other camping stoves using less fuel

Cons

  • Can generate a lot of soot
  • A little bulky

What Reviewers are Saying

Reviewers laud the stove as a cool camping gadget, noting the ease of use and effectiveness at cooking meals fast. One verified Amazon reviewer writes, “From the reviews I knew this little stove would be easy to use, but I had to try it for myself to find out that it is EXTREMELY EASY TO USE!”

“My daughter and I spent a minute or two gathering little sticks from the ground under our wild mesquite trees,” they go on to say. “We put a small bundle of lint from the dryer and a few sticks and lit it with a barbecue lighter, and the stove raged very intensely almost immediately. We put a pot of ramen noodles on top, which came to a boil in about 30 seconds. This is perhaps the best purchase I’ve ever made on Amazon. Highly recommended.”

FAQs

What is a rocket stove?

Rocket stoves are fantastic off-the-grid appliances that are used to cook camping food. These stoves are typically lightweight and extremely portable, so they’re ideal for hikers and trailblazers. Unlike electric or gas grills, rocket stoves boast ample insulation thanks to the cylindrical design, making them more efficient. They also create less smoke and run off combustible materials like coal, wood and twigs.

Can a rocket stove be used indoors?

Like Solo Stove fire pits, campers should never use rocket stoves like the EcoZoom Versa indoors. While they’re more efficient and generate less smoke than other camping stoves, they do still produce some carbon monoxide that can be toxic if generated in enclosed spaces.

Where to Buy the EcoZoom Rocket Stove

Ecozoom Rocket Stove Ecomm Via Amazon

The EcoZoom Versa rocket stove is available on Amazon and BioLite’s website for around $150. Splurge on a solar-powered cooler and consider all your cooking gear secured for this year’s off-the-grid camping trips.

Breeo vs Solo Stove: Which Smokeless Fire Pit Is Better? https://www.familyhandyman.com/article/breeo-vs-solo-stove/ Thu, 11 May 2023 13:20:10 +0000 For our Breeo vs. Solo Stove comparison, we tested and reviewed both fire pits to see which is the better option for most homeowners.

The post Breeo vs Solo Stove: Which Smokeless Fire Pit Is Better? appeared first on Family Handyman.

]]>
Theres nothing quite like a cozy fire and good conversation under the stars, and summer is the season of fire pits, specifically smokeless, portable fire pits. Theyre the ultimate backyard party accessory, no matter where the gathering is.

But why smokeless? Smokeless fire pits keep you from inhaling uncomfortable fumes and smelling like a campfire for days. Theyre backyard and family-friendly, as theyll keep the smoke out of kids and pets faces. Our favorite portable, smokeless fire pits come with the option of grilling and cooking food, too, making them ideal for overnight camping trips and cookouts.

Regarding portable, smokeless fire pits, there are two major retailers: Breeo and Solo Stove. It can be tricky to decide which one to spend your hard-earned dollars on (especially in this economy, am I right?), so were going to break down product specs and features from one of each brands fire pits. If youve been going back and forth between Breeo vs Solo Stove for a while, were here to help you make the final decisionwe even did some testing of our own to deliver all the deets you need.

What’s the difference between Breeo and Solo Stove?

While both Breeo and Solo Stove make stainless-steel smokeless fire pits and accessories, there are key differences between the brands you should know before buying from them.

Both Breeo and Solo Stove offer three different varieties of outdoor fire pits that vary in size and features. Breeo offers three fire pit models, one of which is available in three different sizes. Solo Stove offers three different sizes of their famous portable model, along with two sizes of their tabletop fire pit. That said, both brands offer a similar line of fire pits (unless youre specifically looking for a small tabletop fire pit). If thats the case, youll want to shop the Solo Stove Mesa. The Mesa is a small, ultra-portable fire pit, perfect for making smores anywhere, anytime.

When it comes to pricing and accessories, Solo Stove and Breeo are notably different. First off, Breeo fire pits tend to be significantly more expensive than Solo Stove fire pits. However, accessory pricing between the two brands is comparable. And some cooking accessories at Breeo are more affordable when compared to similar products at Solo Stove.

One major thing to consider when deciding between Breeo and Solo Stove is that Solo Stove offers a wider range of fire pit accessories than Breeo. From a pizza oven attachment to cast iron wok and grill tops, Solo Stove has a variety of add-on accessories. While Breeo does have fire pit cooking accessorieslike a cast iron kettle and hook, which Solo Stove does not haveoptions are a bit more limited. So, its important to consider how much and what kind of cooking you want to do with your fire pit when deciding between Solo Stove and Breeo.

Regarding product comparison, two portable fire pit options are similar between the brands: The Breeo X Series and the Solo Stove Bonfire 2.0. Both are smokeless, made of stainless steel and about 20 inches in diameter. How do you decide between two similar, highly-rated products? Keep reading for the scoop on both fire pits.

All About the Solo Stove Bonfire 2.0

Solo-Stove placed on the frond yard of a house

Pros

  • Ultra-lightweight
  • Easy to move
  • Several compatible accessories available
  • Removable ash pan for simple clean-up
  • Burns multiple fuel sources
  • Comes almost entirely assembled, setup is quick and hassle-free
  • Design makes for an efficient, easy-to-build fire
  • Mess is contained within the cylinder
  • Can be used on different types of surfaces

Cons

  • Outside of the cylinder gets very hot, use caution with children and pets

Ive tested the Solo Stove Bonfire 2.0 at many nighttime gatherings and with different fuel sources. I’ve used it for grilling food, and tested it with the Pi Fire pizza oven, too.

My favorite things about the Bonfire 2.0 include: Its ultra-lightweight (about 23 pounds), it has a removable ash pan for easy cleaning, and it has several compatible accessories. It also comes with a carrying case for portability and storage.

Family Handyman contributor Anthony O’Reilly, who’s tested the Solo Stove Bonfire and more than seven other fire pits, says his favorite thing about the Bonfire 2.0 is its design. “It looks very sleek,” Anthony notes.

The Bonfire 2.0 is Solo Stoves best-selling backyard fire pit, and I think its super versatile. You can do more than make a wood-fired pizza and cook over a flame with a cast iron wok. You can also use your Bonfire to grill, fry and roast everything from veggies to sausages to smores and more with the right accessories. While smokeless fire pits send smoke and heat upward instead of outward, you can also use your Bonfire for heat during colder months with the Heat Deflector. You can also make your portable Solo Stove more permanent with the Fire Pit Surround, a protective barrier with a ledge for tools and drinks.

Want to know how it holds up under the pressure of real-life fire? Check out our in-depth Solo Stove Bonfire 2.0 review. I’ve also tested and reviewed the Solo Stove patio heater and the Solo Stove Mesa Torch.

All About the Breeo X Series

Wood burning inside the breeo

Pros

  • Airflow technology for quick fires
  • Double wall construction
  • Available in two types of steel
  • Comes almost entirely assembled, setup is quick and hassle-free
  • Design makes for an efficient, easy-to-build fire
  • Mess is contained within the cylinder
  • Can be used on different types of surfaces

Cons

  • More expensive and heavier than Solo Stove

Burning wood in side the breeo stove in the backyard

Frequent fire pit user Anthony O’Reilly has used the Breeo X Series in his backyard for more than a month. His favorite thing about it is its durability.

“This is a well-built fire pit,” Anthony says. “You can tell right away that it’s made of high-quality materials and is going to last for a very long time.”

The Breeo X Series Smokeless Fire Pit is a bit heavier than the Solo Stove, weighing 47 pounds, and slightly bigger at 22 inches in diameter (the Solo Stove Bonfire has a diameter of 19-1/2 inches). It’s available in four versions: X19, X24, X30 and X42. Its also noticeably more expensive. However, it does have a few added features we like, including an airflow-raised air vent design and double-wall technology.

In terms of performance, there’s a good amount of airflow, so starting fires is always pretty simple. It’s available in multiple sizes and two design optionscorten and stainless steel.

Anthony tested it using kiln-dried and unseasoned firewood, and in both cases, the fire pit stayed truly smokeless. “Smokeless fire pits work using double combustion, meaning the smoke from the fire is drawn back into the pit and burned again before it leaves the fire pit, thus reducing the amount of smoke produced,” explains survivalist Mike Millerson.

Anthony hasn’t used it for cooking yet, though it can be used as a pizza oven if you purchase an attachment.

FAQ

Yes, the Solo Stove eliminates smoke by using double-combustion technology to keep smoke from entering the air. The Breeo fire pit also has this technology and is a portable smokeless fire pit.

Is Breeo an Amish company?

The Bottom Line

 Solo Stove outdoors placed outdoors

If youre on a budget, Solo Stove fire pits are more wallet-friendly, and Solo Stove has a wider range of compatible accessories. If you plan on taking your fire pit from one backyard hangout to the next, portability is also something to keep in mind when making your choice.

If youre someone who likes to cook food by hanging it over a fire, or if you use a kettle over an open fire frequently, then Breeo may be the brand for you. Breeo also sells fireside furniture built specifically for sitting around a fire and enduring the elements.

If youre looking for luxury, something like the Breeo Luxeve may be worth looking into, too. Its a 33-inch smokeless fire pit available in four exterior colors and five decorative glass colors. While such Breeo models are less portable, they do pack a punch in terms of design.

How To Put Out a Charcoal Grill Safely https://www.familyhandyman.com/article/how-to-put-out-charcoal-grill/ Wed, 10 May 2023 19:00:34 +0000 https://www.familyhandyman.com/?p=539378 Safety first, always. With a few tools and tricks, it's easy to put out a charcoal grill at home or on the road.

The post How To Put Out a Charcoal Grill Safely appeared first on Family Handyman.

]]>
A couple of years ago I was competing in a barbecue contest in eastern Wisconsin. I was in a rush to put out my charcoal grill and pack up so I could hit the road and get home. That’s when I made a dangerous mistake. By not disposing of my hot coals safely, I started a fire!

Thankfully, a couple of other competitors stepped in and helped me put it out before it got out of hand. From that day on, I’ve taken fire management more seriously. You should, too.

Here are the best ways to safely put out a charcoal grill, and how to safely dispose of and reuse charcoal.

Tools and Equipment

Putting Out the Coals

Depending on where you are, you may have plenty of time, or not enough.

At home, with plenty of time

  • After you’ve removed all the food from the grill, close the lid and all the vents. Wear insulated gloves or mitts because the vents can be hot! This step takes time, sometimes as long as a whole day. But your coals will eventually go out.
  • Do NOT pour or spray water on your coals to put them out faster. The water can become extremely hot, billowing steam that could burn you or others. Dirty, dusty water also can splash out onto your deck or wherever you’re cooking, leaving a mess. Same with ash dust if it gets wet.

Away from home and need to act quickly

  • On the competition barbecue circuit, my fellow competitors and I are always anxious to pack up and head home when the contest is over. That’s why many of us carry a small metal trash can.
  • When I’m ready to pack up, I put on my insulated mitts, dump all the hot coals and ashes in the trash can and tightly close the lid. This is far more airtight than any grill, so it puts out the fire and cools quickly. By the time I have everything else cleaned and packed up, the trash can is cool enough to pick it up by the handles and put it in my truck bed. Don’t put the can inside your vehicle unless the can is cool to the touch. How long that takes depends on how many coals you had and how much was left to burn.
  • If you’re somewhere with built-in fire pits, you could dump your coals in one so you don’t have to haul them home. But it’s vital to make sure they’re out before you walk away.
  • As mentioned earlier, avoid using water, unless you dumped coals in a fire pit. If the coals are still too hot to leave behind, you can slowly pour water in the pit to extinguish them. Be careful with any steam.

Disposing of and Reusing Coals

If you’re at home and the coals are completely out and cooled off, here’s what to do:

  • Lay a sheet of aluminum foil on a table next to your grill. Grab metal tongs, pick out the pieces of charcoal that haven’t burned down very much and place them on the foil.
  • If your grill is small and light enough to pick up, dump the ash into a disposable bag you can put in your home trash can. If your grill is too heavy, use a metal ash shovel to scoop it out into a bag you can dispose of.
  • Put the pieces of charcoal you set aside back in your grill. Next time you fire it up, put a layer of new charcoal on top of the saved coals. This will not only save you money by using less new charcoal, you’ll also have less to clean out and dispose of each time.

Heres the deal: Fire pit season is officially in full swing. And weve made it our mission to find the best fire pits so you can enjoy your backyard to the fullest. Its no secret that we love the Bonfire 2.0 and other Solo Stove smokeless fire pits, especially now that you can use a pellet adapter with them. That means a more even, controlled fire for outdoor cooking and grilling.

To no one’s surprise, the next Solo Stove accessory we decided to put to the test was the Ranger Cast Iron Grill Top. Made for open fire grilling on the go, its perfect for camping or taking your fire pit and cooking system over to a friends for a backyard cue.

Keep reading for the full rundown on the Solo Stove Cast Iron Cooktop, designed for the best sear you can get over a fire pit.

What is the Ranger Cast Iron Grill Top?

Solo Stove Ranger Cast Iron Grill Top side view

The Ranger Cast Iron Grill Top makes flame-to-table dinners possible (and portable). Solo Stove fire pits are made to carry along for any adventure, and so are the grill tops and accessories. With the Cast Iron Cooktop Carry Case (not included), the cast iron grill accessory stores easily and goes just about anywhere. Thats right, this baby is destined for the ultimate overnight camping trip.

The Ranger Cast Iron Grill Top is a true cast iron cooktop: Its heavy, seasonable, non-stick and made to last for years. Best of all, cast irons are designed to counter intense heat (like an open flame). They heat up gradually and evenly for easily controlled cooking temperatures.

Solo Stove Cast Iron Cooktops are made with wide grill gates and a broad cooking surface for the perfect sear and infusion of wood-fired flavors. They’re ideal for grilling veggies and cooking steaks, hotdogs, sausages and more.

Note: The Ranger Cast Iron Grill Top is one component of the Ranger Cooking System and must be used with Ranger Hub and Ranger 2.0 for a safe and complete experience.

Ranger Cast Iron Grill Top Product Features

Made of heavy-duty cast iron, the Ranger Cast Iron Grill Top weighs 13 pounds and has a cooking surface diameter of 14-1/4 inches.

Theres virtually no setup required, either. Simply put the Ranger Hub on top of your Ranger Solo Stove fire pit, then place the Ranger Cast Iron Grill Top over the hub. The hub lifts the grill 14-1/4 inches above the top of the fire pit and leaves you enough space to add firewood to the flames as needed.

Hardwoods like Oak, Maple and Hickory are best for cooking with the grill top. Some woods, like softwoods, plywood and wood thats been stained or painted, are not safe for cooking. If you have the Ranger Pellet Adapter, you can use food-safe pellets with your Ranger Grill Top.

The cast iron grill top should be treated just like any other cast iron youre used to cooking on. That said, the non-stick quality should fully develop after about ten seasonings. Spreading a thin layer of oil over the surface of the grill top can help season it for first-time use. However, if you forget to pre-season your cooktop as I did, dont stress. My veggies turned out just fine with little to no sticking on the grill top.

By the way, every Solo Stove product comes with a lifetime warranty that guarantees the product is free of manufacturing defects. So, if you have issues with your Solo Stove (e.g., it arrives damaged), you should contact customer service.

How I Tested It

Grilling kabobs on a Solo Stove Ranger Cast Iron Grill Top

Not going to lie, as someone who loves to cook and try out new recipes in the kitchen, I was pumped when I heard Id be testing the Solo Stove Cast Iron Grill Top. After testing the Bonfire 2.0 and discovering how easy it is to get a fire going (even for an amateur fire starter), I was eager to test out all the Solo Stove accessories I could get my hands on.

Getting Started with the Grill Top

So, when the Cast Iron Grill Top arrived at my door, I quickly fired up my Solo Stove and got to grilling. I used Pit Boss All Natural Barbecue Hardwood Pellets to start my fire over the Solo Stove pellet adapter. Once the fire started, I put the grill top and hub on top of the fire pit. One thing I didnt think about in all my excitement: Putting the grill top over the fire would be HOT. I absolutely recommend using tools and gloves when tending to the fire and using fire pit accessories like the grill hub.

One benefit of using food-safe pellets over firewood while cooking with your Solo Stove is that you have more control over the flameI did, at least. I placed the hub and grill top without scorching my eyebrows.

Let’s Get Cooking!

Once I centered the cooktop over the fire pit, the cast iron heated up within minutes. I started with veggie skewers, as theyre easy to turn, and I knew I wouldnt have to worry about reaching a certain internal temperature as you would with meat. The skewer also allowed me to easily rotate the veggies, ensuring an even grill all the way around. Note: Have tongs and a spatula handy!

I also cooked up some sausages and hot dogs, which are more forgiving when grilling. The wide cast iron gates left nice grill lines (if youre into that). I kept the veggies on for about five minutes, rotating throughout the cooking time. The hotdogs were also heated in just a few minutes, as they were already pre-cooked. I put the sausages on last, when the fire was lower, and I had them on for about 15-20 minutes to make sure they cooked throughout. Sausages tend to be fattier, so I wasnt worried about overcooking them.

Before the flame died, I heated some naan I had, which turned out nicely when paired with hummus. Although, I would recommend brushing or spraying grains with a little oil to prevent sticking on the first cook.

I was surprised that everything I grilled (with caution) turned out well! The char-grilled veggie skewers were delicious. And we all know grilled hotdogs are the best hotdogs. The cast iron grills large, thick surface areas provided cooler spots to move food to avoid overcooking. And the large grill slats let the flavor of the fire brush against the food.

Cleaning Process

Cleanup was super easy, too! After the grill top and fire pit cooled down, I simply wiped down the cast iron, and thats it. Then, I went about cleaning up the Solo Stove Fire Pit as usual, which involved wiping down the pellet adapter with a dry cloth and emptying the ash pan at the bottom.

Pros

  • Ranger Cast Iron Grill Top + Hub fit securely on top of Solo Stove Ranger
  • Grill top is quality, heavy-duty cast iron
  • Hub is lightweight and easy to lift and set on fire pit
  • Grill grates on cast iron provide a wide, even sear
  • Easy to set up, use and clean
  • Wide range of compatible accessories
  • Lifetime warranty

Cons

  • Does not come with carrying case
  • Expensive but great quality

FAQ

Can I burn lump charcoal in a Solo Stove?

Yes! Solo Stove Fire Pits works with multiple fuel sources, from wood to pellets to charcoal. When grilling, youll want to be sure that whatever fuel source youre using is safe for food.

Can I cook when the fire is burning?

The Solo Stove cooking systems work best over a shallow bed of embers. For a safer, more controlled cook, youll want to be sure that the flames arent higher than a few inches while using the Solo Stove Cast Iron Grill Top.

How do I clean a cast iron grill?

Youll clean your Solo Stove Cast Iron Grill Top much like you would a cast iron skillet. Wipe away excess oil and crumbs while the iron is hot. For deeper cleans, youll want to use hot water and a scrubbing tool like the Solo Stove Cast Iron Scrubber.

As with other cast iron cookware, you shouldnt ever submerge or soak the cast iron in water, and youll want to apply a light coat of seasoning oil to clean and dry your cast iron grill top before storing it away.
