When it comes to hosting get-togethers, enjoying the backyard is a huge perk. Friends company with autumn leaves falling on the ground, kids playing in the grass and someone grilling food for the crowd can create lasting core memories. Of course, securing the best backyard setup for gatherings isnt always easy. There are a ton of choices when it comes to deck furniture, outdoor grills, fire pits and more.

Luckily, Ive locked down my all-time favorite outdoor fire pit brand: Solo Stove. Ive tested products from various outdoor brands, and I’ve written countless Solo Stove reviews. So far, my favorite smokeless fire pit comes from Solo Stove. Ive spent countless hours testing products from the brand: Fire pits, chairs, patio heaters, you name it. If Solo Stove makes it, Ive (likely) tested it. Heres what you need to know before placing an order.

What is Solo Stove?

Solo Stove is a leading outdoor fire pit brand founded in 2011 by two brothers and a small camp stove. Their mission? To gather family and friends to create good memories. They get it.

Now, the brand has grown to include a variety of smokeless fire pits and pizza ovens, patio furniture, outdoor heaters and outdoor accessories. In addition to the official Solo Stove website, you can find select Solo Stove products on Amazon.

How We Test Solo Stove Products

I have tested over a dozen Solo Stove products in nearly every category, including evergreen, limited-edition and seasonal items. I evaluate each product based on the delivery experience, packaging, assembly, quality, and ease of use. Outfitting your patio or backyard setup with Solo Stove gear can be expensive, so I examine, test and review each product as thoroughly as I can with your hard-earned dollar in mind.

Fire Pits

Fire pits are the bread and butter of Solo Stove and the reason the brand was created. Solo Stove fire pits are a great way to add ambiance and (literal) warmth to your outdoor space, and theyre great for roasting smores and hotdogs, as well as grilling other food items.

When it comes to smokeless fire pits, Solo Stove as a brand is a leading force, creating products that meetand in many cases exceedindustry standards. Each fire pit is made with sturdy, weatherproof 304 stainless steel and designed to funnel smoke upward away instead of outward. Solo Stoves 360-degree Signature Airflow design heats air to burn off smoke, so you dont have to shift around the fire pit to avoid teary eyes and a face full of smoke.

One of our favorite fire pit picks is the Bonfire 2.0, made for the backyard and beyond. In other words, its designed for a permanent or portable fire pit experience. The Solo Stove Bonfire even comes with its own carrying bag, so you can store it safely, load it up, and carry it wherevercamping, tailgating, fall party, you name it. Cleanup is easy, too; the base plate and ash pan are removable, which makes cleaning quick and easy. No special cleaning tools are needed; just lift the base plate to remove the ash pan and dump it.

We also love the Mesa fire pit if youre looking for a smaller, more compact backyard fire experience. It has the same signature stainless steel design as other Solo Stove fire pits (e.g., the Bonfire 2.0), but its miniature and small enough to put on an outdoor table. Getting a fire going only takes a few minutes with the Mesa. Simply place fuel (wood or pellets) into the base of the Mesa, light your fire starter, and youre ready to go!

Pizza Ovens

Did someone say artisan pizza? ThePi Prime is Solo Stoves first gas-only pizza oven, which comes at a price lower than other gas-powered pizza ovens on the market. The Pi Prime pizza oven is quick and easy to fire upsimply hook it up to an external propane tank and turn the control knob on the front to ignite a flame. After the oven preheats, youre ready to launch your Neapolitan pizza creation.

Like most standardoutdoor pizza ovens, the Pi Prime has a 90-second cooking experience, so pizzas cook ultra-fast at super-high temperatures. Once youve nailed launching and turning the pizza without overcooking it, youll be whipping up homemade pies for everyone to enjoy.

If you want to try your hand at wood-fired pizza, theSolo Stove Pi Fire provides the ideal gateway to backyard baking. This portable pizza oven topper fits on top of your existing Solo Stove fire pit. Unliketraditional pizza ovensthat have space for wood at the bottom, the Pi Fire features long legs that elevate it over your smokeless fire pit.

Heaters and Lights

Line your patio with sleek, modern torches like the Mesa Torch, a backyard torchlight that runs on fluid. Its a durable, stainless-steel torch made with the famous Solo Stove design, similar to Mesa’s. The weather-resistant steel is painted a semi-matte black to blend seamlessly into any backyard scene. You can choose between two configurations: tall and short. So, your Mesa Torch can light your fence line or be at eye level when youre sitting around the fire pit.

The Mesa Torch has a giant wick, integrated fuel canister and a bezel that fits the snuff cap perfectly for easy extinguishing. Plus, the torch will keep an oversized flame for up to five hours on a single fill. I like to fill mine with a bug-repelling torch fluid to keep mosquitos at bay during the summer.

If youre looking for something to provide a little more warmth than light, the Solo Stove Tower Patio Heateris a pellet-fueled heater that keeps you warm in colder weather.Like the Solo StoveBonfire 2.0fire pit, it issmokeless. It has about a 10-foot heating radius, so its perfect for small to mid-sized patios during chilly (but not freezing) temperatures.

The Tower Patio Heaters hopper box holds about 25 pounds of pellets, and a full hopper box should produce about three hours of warmth. Its perfect if you want a patio heater that doesnt use propane. Pellets are generally easier to store and lighter in weight than firewood. Theyre also typically less expensive than propane and dont pose the same combustion risks as propane tanks.

Furniture

Once your fire pit area is ready to go, youll need seating to kick back and enjoy the crackling flames. Solo Stove is one step ahead. Its sister brand, TerraFlame, has a line of weatherproof outdoor furniture, including the1903 Adirondack modern chair. It combines the classic, timeless design of an Adirondack with new, lightweight outdoor materials. The chair is made of an eco-friendly composite made partially from recycled plastics.

While the chairs materials are resistant to corrosion, the chair is also less prone to chipping and peeling than a chair made of wood. With this Solo Stove chair, you wont have to worry about snagging clothes or blankets on splinters.

Terra Flame recently released new patio furniture, including coffee tables, loveseats and more. Were currently assembling and testing the new furniture for review.

FAQ

What is the point of a Solo Stove?

Solo Stove fire pits are designed to promote airflow, which creates a more efficient burn with less smoke. They are also portable, so you can sit around the fire anywhere, and help contain the mess (and sometimes unpredictable nature) of a traditional backyard bonfire.

Can a Solo Stove be used on a deck?

Solo Stove fire pits can be used on a wood deck but this requires careful attention. If the fire pit is not properly elevated and insulated or if its misused, the deck can be charred or caught on fire.

You should never leave your Solo Stove fire pit (or any fire pit) unattended on a combustible surface, even while cooling down.

Do Solo Stoves get hot on the outside?

Yes! The outside of Solo Stove fire pits gets very hot, so please be cautious.

Can Solo Stove be used indoors?

You should never use a Solo Stove fire pit indoors, not even theMesa. It is for outdoor use only, so please do not try to use it indoors at your kitchen table. You can, however, use it on outdoor dining tables and end tables.

TerraFlames Smores Bowl uses smoke-free gel fuel and can be used indoors on a table or counter for easy, inside marshmallow roasting.

A gazebo can instantly transform your backyard scene and boost your resale value. Plus, they offer practical advantages, like additional shade and shelter from the rain. From barbecues to birthday parties, the right gazebo provides a designated, covered area for gatherings.

If youve shopped for gazebos, you know there are endless options when it comes to materials, shape and size. Generally, if you want a more permanent fixture, you should go with a metal or wooden gazebo. If you want something more portable and can move from one spot in the yard to another, a soft-top gazebo might be the way to go (theyre also typically more affordable).

We selected this Sunjoy Hardtop Octagon Gazebo to install as a permanent fixture in our backyard. Below is our full review of the Sunjoy Gazebo, from delivery and assembly to product details and more.

What is a Sunjoy Outdoor Hardtop Gazebo?

Sunjoy is an outdoor furniture and gazebo brand founded in 2001. For over 20 years, the brand has manufactured high-quality outdoor products designed to last for years. They offer free delivery on all orders and a 30-day return window from the original delivery date. Sunjoy makes a variety of gazebo styles, including hard-top, soft-top, pop-up, wall-mounted and more. Sunjoy also offers gazebos in various materials, including metal, wood and aluminum.

The Sunjoy Outdoor Hardtop Gazebo we installed in our backyard is made of metal, specifically steel for the roof and galvanized pipe for the legs. It is octagonal and features a double-tiered top for ventilation and wind resistance. The entire structure sports an aesthetic matte black finish. Its perfect for expanding your entertainment area outside and is a permanent structure if you anchor the legs.

Sunjoy Outdoor Hardtop Gazebo Product Features

Here’s a look at some of the standout features, good and bad, you can expect if you choose to purchase this Sunjoy gazebo.

Materials

The Sunjoy Outdoor Hardtop Gazebo features all-steel construction. Specifically, the roof is made of steel, while the legs are made of galvanized pipe. Sunjoy offers similar hard-top gazebos with metal roofs and wooden legs if you want a gazebo that will blend in on top of a deck or other wooden structure.

Fhma24 Sunjoy Outdoor Hard Top Gazebo Mary Henn 03 Ssedit

The steel structure is very sturdy and weather-resistant. The gazebo we tested has faced Midwestern winds, storms and heat, and it still looks as good as new. Anchoring the gazebo legs in the ground helps keep it in place during severe weather, too.

Size

The hard-top octagon gazebo has a diameter of about 15 feet, and its legs measure about 6-1/2 feet tall and 4-1/2 feet apart. The entire structure stands about 11 feet tall and weighs over 500 pounds. It can withstand 50 MPH winds and over 4,000 pounds of snow. Talk about sturdy! Underneath the gazebo, you can easily fit a standard-size picnic table or a few lounge chairs.

Design

The gazebos two-tiered roof allows airflow while shielding off weather by protecting whats underneath it from UV rays and allowing wind to pass through the top. The built-in dual rails let you easily hang mosquito netting or curtains, and the ceiling hook lets you hang suspended lighting. The durable matte black coating is made to withstand sun, rain and snow while providing a modern look.

How We Tested It

Fhma24 Sunjoy Outdoor Hard Top Gazebo Mary Henn 02 Ssedit

The Sunjoy Outdoor Hardtop Gazebo was delivered to our house via semi-truck. It was a pallet delivery, which the drivers dropped in the front yard. We did not have the option of getting it delivered to the backyard, where we wanted it. I recommend contacting Sunjoys customer support team if you order a large, heavy gazebo and want it delivered to a designated area. They might be able to accommodate you. I did not do that, and the delivery weighed over 500 pounds, so I could not move the pallet alone.

I did not anticipate the size and weight of the item, because when I was shopping for a gazebo, I originally had selected a smaller, lighter gazebo from Sunjoy. However, I was sent the larger octagon gazebo instead. After realizing the size of the gazebo, I knew Id need help moving and assembling it.

The instructions recommended a team of five people, which I did not have available. So, I used Thumbtack to find a construction pro to move, assemble and anchor the gazebo in the backyard. Living in the Midwest, I needed to anchor the gazebo, especially since I was having it installed during storm season. I didn’t want to risk strong winds damaging the gazebo or its surroundings.

I took many bids from different construction pros for the project. In my area, the most affordable rate was $1,750 for the entire job. However, the cheaper rate came at an additional, unexpected cost. The job was done poorlyconcrete was thrown onto the fence and left in the yard, and the concrete used to anchor the gazebos posts was laid inconsistently and far above the grass.

That said, the gazebo was moved and assembled quickly, looks level, and is very sturdy. If you have the means, Id recommend hiring vetted pros to assemble and anchor your hard-top gazebo.

Additionally, because the gazebo I was sent was larger than I expected, it did not fit on our patio. So, we had to assemble it adjacent to the patio in a grassy area. We havent entirely decided how to use that space, but we plan to either extend the patio or install some other kind of outdoor flooring and make that an outdoor dining area.

While the installation process was a headache, the product is fantastic. Its a large, sturdy gazebo that has already held up against numerous storms. The dimensions are true to those listed in the product description, and the matte black finish looks sleek and high quality. If youre serious about revamping your outdoor space, Sunjoy consistently produces gazebos of excellent quality.

FAQ

How do you anchor a Sunjoy gazebo to concrete?

Sunjoy gazebos already have holes in their feet so that you can secure them to a concrete surface with a bolt. I opted to pour new concrete around the legs to keep them in place, since I assembled the structure on grass.

What is the lifespan of a gazebo?

Most metal gazebos are resistant to rust thanks to galvanization and/or a weather-resistant coating, and can withstand severe weather. If properly secured, they can last up to 15 years.

What Others Have to Say

The Sunjoy Outdoor Hardtop Gazebo has a five-star rating, and reviewers also include pictures of assembled gazebos. Reviewers note the overall quality of the materials, how carefully parts were packaged for delivery and the speedy delivery times. It took reviewers six hours to a day and a half to fully assemble the gazebo, and all reviewers used at least two people and equipment for assembly. Buyers also commented on the scarce instructions, including very few words but many pictures. Reviewers also recommend using a screw gun with metric sockets to put together the parts.

Sunjoy Outdoor Hardtop Gazebo vs. Sunjoy Outdoor Softtop Gazebo

If you want an octagonal gazebo but are on a tighter budget, consider this Outdoor Softop Gazebo. It has the same shape as the Outdoor Hardtop Gazebo but retails for a fraction of the price. It’s also 11 by 13 feet, so it’s a bit smaller than the 15-by-15-foot gazebo we tested. The Outdoor Softtop Gazebo has high customer ratings and the same durable structure as the hardtop one. It includes a ventilated top, ceiling hook, and mesh netting to keep bugs out.

Sunjoy sells a variety of soft-top gazebos. While metal gazebos are more durable, longer-lasting and weather-resistant, soft-top gazebos also have perks. They are usually easier to assemble and move and are often less permanent. Additionally, soft-top gazebos typically cost much less than their hard-top counterparts.

Final Verdict

If youre looking for a top-notch, hard-top gazebo, then Sunjoy is a great place to start shopping. Sunjoys vast inventory and commitment to crafting high-quality gazebos puts it ahead of the competition. While you may have to consider hiring professional assemblydepending on the size and type of gazebo you buy and how you want it installedyou can count on Sunjoy to deliver on quality. If opting for a hard-top gazebo over a soft-top gazebo, we recommend anchoring it securely to keep it in place.

A Guide to Building a Patio with Ceramic Tile https://www.familyhandyman.com/article/a-guide-to-building-a-patio-with-ceramic-tile/ Tue, 03 Sep 2024 17:35:44 +0000 https://www.familyhandyman.com/?p=633630 Thanks to modern materials, tile is now a durable and long-lasting option for exterior concrete patios–even in cold climates. Here's what you need to know.

The post A Guide to Building a Patio with Ceramic Tile appeared first on Family Handyman.

]]>
For about 6,000 years, builders have been using ceramic tile outdoorson buildings, walkways, and even streets. Not only does tile offer a range of colors and designs unmatched by any other material, its also amazingly tough. In places like Italy and Mexico, you can find exterior tile in good condition despite centuries of wear and tear.

You wont find much ancient tile outdoors in cooler climates, though. Tile can take generations of foot traffic, but water that freezes or expands in or under tiles can turn a gorgeous patio into a crumbling mess.

Thats why tile hasnt been used widely outdoors in cold climates: It was just too risky. Over the last several decades, howeveras tile setting and materials have improvedthat risk has diminished.

Six keys to successful outdoor tile setting

  1. Use high-quality materials only. Expensive patio tiles wont necessarily outlast moderately priced tile, but with thin-set, grout, sealer and caulk, you get what you pay for.
  2. Follow the manufacturers instructions. Even the best setting materials wont perform as promised unless you mix and use them as instructed.
  3. Apply tile only to a stable, well-drained slab. A slab with places for puddles or ever-growing cracks is no place for tile.
  4. Allow the tile to expand and contract without cracking by placing expansion joints no more than 16 ft. apart and anywhere the tile meets a vertical surface like steps or the houses foundation.
  5. Dont give water places to enter or hide. That means densely packed and sealed grout joints, caulked expansion joints and no empty pockets in the thin-set.
  6. Dont delay maintenance. If grout cracks or a tile comes loose, replace it before a small problem becomes a big one.

A Guide To Building A Patio With Ceramic Tile Fh97apr 01098002

Level the slab

Screed floor leveler over low areas using a 2×4. Check the entire slab for low spots by laying a straight 10-ft. 2×4 on edge; any areas where the gap between the slab and the 2×4 is wider than 1/8 in. must be filled.

Important: Nothing should cover isolation joints or fill expansion joints except caulk. If you get any floor leveler or isolation membrane in the joint, scrape it off with a putty knife after it hardens. Here are the best patio flooring ideas.

A Guide To Building A Patio With Ceramic Tile Fh97apr 01098003

Apply crack isolation membrane

Comb the isolation membrane material over the slab with the notched edge of the trowel and then flatten it out with the trowels straight edge. When combing, hold the trowel consistently at about a 45-degree angle. That way, the notches will evenly distribute the pasty material, giving you a flat, consistent membrane.

A Guide To Building A Patio With Ceramic Tile Fh97apr 01098004

Set the patio tiles in thin-set mortar

Squish patio tiles into thin-set mortar adhesive applied with a 3/4-in. U-notch (rounded-notch) trowel. Twist the tiles back and forth slightly as you force them down. Your goal is complete coveragethat is, the space between the tiles and the membrane below should be completely filled with thin-set (no cavities to hold water and cause trouble). To allow enough space for grout, remove the thin set that wells up between the tiles or into expansion joints with a pencil or screwdriver. Clean thin-set off the surface of tiles with a damp sponge.

A Guide To Building A Patio With Ceramic Tile Fh97apr 01098005

Grout the tiles

Push the grout diagonally across the tiles, holding the grout float at a 45-degree angle. Use a hard rubber float, not one with soft foam backing. Work the grout back and forth in all four directions to pack the joints densely. Then, hold the float at nearly 90 degrees to the tile surface and scrape excess grout off the tile. Remove grout residue with a damp (not dripping-wet) sponge, rinsing it frequently.

Some home centers carry everything youll need for this project. But for the best materials and advice, visit a few tile specialty stores, preferably pro-level suppliers.

The tile you choose must be made from dense materialporous tiles will absorb water and crumble as that water freezes. The tile you buy may be called frost-free, vitreous, impervious or freeze-thaw stable, but whatever the label, make sure its warranted by the manufacturer to withstand freezing.

Chances are, youll need floor leveler, a powder that you mix with water and spread over low spots in the slab. Sometimes called SLC (self-leveling compound), floor leveler is sold under a variety of brand names; just be sure the one you buy is recommended for outdoor use.

An isolation membrane is an elastic barrier that separates the tile from the slab. That way, when the slab cracksas all slabs eventually dothe tiles can float above the cracks without cracking themselves. This protection is limited, of course: Cracks that widen 1/8 in. or so will likely telegraph into the tiles above. Isolation membranes are available as sheets of rubbery fabric that get sandwiched between two layers of thin-set or as pasty trowel-on mixtures, which are easier to apply.

Latex additives make todays thinset mortar adhesives so much better than their predecessors. Modified materialsas in latex modified or polymer modified are less likely to absorb water and more elastic, so they can better withstand movement caused by temperature change or by pockets of ice under the tile. Still, all modified thin-sets are not the same; use one that meets all specifications for outdoor use (the label includes this information).

The same goes for sanded grout; look for an exterior-grade grout. Ask the tile store for recommendations if youre not sure. (The grout may require mixing with a latex liquid instead of water.)

Silicone grout sealer penetrates the grout, making it more resistant to both staining and water absorption.

Choosing the best caulk, for filling expansion joints, is sometimes a compromise between durability and appearance. Urethane caulk, which holds up to foot traffic best, may not be available in a color that matches your grout. Siliconized latex and acrylic latex are often available in more colors and in sanded versions to match the texture of the grout.

A sound old slab

An existing concrete patio or walkway can be tiled as long as water drains off it and any cracks in it are stable and level (one side of the crack shouldnt be higher than the other). Cracks normally widen and narrow slightly with the seasons, but if theyre getting wider year by year, dont tile over them.

If the concrete has sunk to the level of the surrounding soil, youll have to do some grading. Water must not pool on the tiles. So the slab’s surface has to be made flat.

To prepare an existing slab, scrub it clean with a stiff broom and water. Remove any oil or grease stains with a degreaser. If the concrete has a smooth-troweled surface, rent a pressure washer with at least 4,000 psi to clean the slab and roughen its surface. Muriatic acid will also clean and roughen concrete. Finally, fill cracks with caulk (one thats intended for use on masonry) and holes with vinyl or latex patching compound (available at home centers).

A perfect new slab

Pouring a concrete slab is a major project in itself and we wont explain how to do it here. Whether you do it yourself or hire a contractor, here are the requirements for a lasting, tile-ready slab:

  • Patio slabs are typically 3-1/2 in. thick and reinforced with steel mesh (if anything). But because strength and crack resistance are so important for this project, we recommend a slab 5 to 6 in. thick, reinforced with a 2-ft. x 2-ft. grid of 1/2-in. rebar.
  • For good surface drainage, the slab should slope 1/4 in. per running foot. A 16-ft. long slab, for example, would be 4 in. lower on one end than the other.
  • Place isolation or control joints in the slab where theyll coincide with expansion joints in the tile (more on that below).
  • If you hire a contractor to pour the slab, make sure curing compounds arent used. Curing compounds increase the strength of concrete by slowing the curing process, but they also prevent tile-setting materials from bonding well to the slab.
  • The slab should have a broomed finish, not a smooth-troweled surface.
  • Concrete shrinks and gains strength for weeks after its poured. Wait at least four weeks before setting tile on a new slab. And any concrete, new or old, should stay dry for at least three days before you begin tile work.

A Guide To Building A Patio With Ceramic Tile Fh97apr 01098009

Exterior ceramic tile details

A new slab should have at least 6-in. of compacted fill and a minimum 5-in. of concrete with rebar, with expansion joints.

A Guide To Building A Patio With Ceramic Tile Fh97apr 01098006

Seal expansion joints

Seal expansion joints with caulk after cleaning them out well (vacuuming them is a quick, thorough method). To make a neat joint, mask the tile along both sides and smooth the caulk with a rounded putty knife. You can round the blade of a plastic putty knife using a utility knife and sandpaper.

Whether youre setting tile on an old or new slab, you must include expansion joints. An expansion joint is a strip of flexible materialin this case, caulkthat lets tile expand and contract with changes in temperature. Heres where to put expansion joints:

  • Anywhere tile meets a vertical surface like steps or the foundation of your house.
  • Over any isolation or control joints in the concrete. Isolation joints are strips of compressible material (isolation strip) in the slab. Control joints are shallow grooves in the concrete.
  • Your patio must have expansion joints at least every 16 ft. (measuring in both directions). For example: A 16 x 16-ft. patio would need expansion joints only along steps or a foundation. A 16 x 20-ft. patio would need one dividing the 20-ft. length. The patio shown here (about 20 x 20 ft.) needed two intersecting joints.

Typically, expansion joints placed 12 ft. apart or less must be at least 3/8 in. wide; joints 12 to 16 ft. apart, 1/2 in. wide. But if you live, say, on the Canadian Prairie, where summer highs and winter lows can differ by more than 100 degrees, add 1/8 in. of width to your expansion joints. NOTE: Also widen expansion joints (or space them closer together) if you plan to use dark-colored tile, which becomes hotter when exposed to sunlight.

A Guide To Building A Patio With Ceramic Tile Fh97apr 01098008

Plan the tile design

Design and build the patio as an extension of the interior rooms in adjoins.

Layout planningdetermining in detail how to position the tilesis one of the most important (and neglected) parts of any tile project. Its a good idea to use graph paper to design and redesign the layout. Here are a few things that make planning for exterior tile different from most interior jobs:

  • Even if the caulk you use to cover the expansion joints closely matches the grout, the expansion joints will be noticeablein part, because theyre usually wider than grout joints. This isnt a problem unless the joint interferes with a symmetrical pattern. Often, the solution to this problem is to create a dummy expansion joint to restore symmetry. Just leave a space as wide as a true expansion joint between the tiles and fill it with caulk.
  • If youre pouring a new slab, choose the tiles and layout first. That way, you can size the slab to eliminate (or at least minimize) cutting tiles and place expansion joints where theyll work with, rather than against, your design.
  • If glass doors or large windows will overlook the patio, it will be more like an extension of your homes interior than an entirely separate space. So as you design your patio, be sure to keep adjacent rooms and colors in mind.
  • Try to choose tiles that are available in a bullnosed version. The rounded edges will nicely finish off the edges of your patio.

A person wearing jeans, a sleeveless shirt, and work boots kneels on a wooden deck under construction. They are looking closely at the wooden planks while holding a hammer. A tool belt is strapped to their waist, and safety glasses rest on the deck nearby.

Deck Board Spacing with Chalk

Measure an equal distance from each end of the deck, allowing for an overhang (if desired), and snap a chalk line as a guide for the first row of decking. Align the first row with the chalk line and nail or screw the boards to the joists.

Then, use spacers at each joist to keep the gap between boards consistent and to keep the boards running straight. Sixteen-penny nails are about the right size for spacing between deck boards. But sight down your boards occasionally as well. You can easily spot when a board is off.

A Guide To Correctly Attaching a New Deck to A House https://www.familyhandyman.com/article/attaching-deck-to-house/ Tue, 25 Jun 2024 18:56:11 +0000 https://www.familyhandyman.com/?p=620278 The connection between a deck and the house can be its most vulnerable point. It won't be if you do it according to these expert tips.

The post A Guide To Correctly Attaching a New Deck to A House appeared first on Family Handyman.

]]>
Out here on California’s Central Coast, it’s rare to find a house without a deck. If you don’t see one in the front of the house, it’s probably in the back, and many of them are attached to the house. That means that builders like my former employer, Are Dann, retired owner of Dann Construction, must be adept at connecting the deck to the building.

It is possible to make a freestanding deck that abuts the building and to run decking boards right up the siding, but that’s something you only need to do if the siding is faux brick, faux or real stone or some other material that doesn’t lend itself to making the connection. Most houses in Dann’s service area have wood, fiber cement or vinyl siding, though, which he says are easier to work with. “You can cut back the siding far enough to allow you to fasten a ledger board to the sheathing and to the building’s rim joist,” says Dann. “Then install flashing, repair the siding and get on with building the deck.”

Dann and I have worked together on several deck projects. Using the techniques I learned while working with him, I’ve built a few on my own and with the help of other workers. Ahead, you’ll find our pointers for attaching a deck to a house the right way.

Preparing a House for a New Deck

Guide To Correctly Attaching A New Deck To A House

In some cases, you might be replacing an old deck with a new one, and if so, it’s important to remove the old ledger board when you demolish the deck. After removing the old deck, you can determine if you can still use the house rim to support the new ledger board.

If the wall sheathing behind the rim looks good, you’re okay. But if the sheathing is rotten, it’s important to investigate further by removing the rotted areas and checking the house’s rim joist and wall framing to see if they’re rotten, too. Dann cautions not to be too eager to rip apart and replace moist or discolored wood because it may still be intact below the surface. Jam a screwdriver into the wood in several places, and if the screwdriver penetrates more than 1/4 in. or so, it’s replacement time. That can be a huge job, so you may want an experienced carpenter to help walk you through that process.

If the sheathing is intact, or there is no existing deck to worry about, you only need to map out the deck’s perimeter on the ground and mark the positions of the postholes for the deck supports. Before digging, don’t forget to call 811 to get a map of underground utilities on your property you don’t want to place a post directly over a sewer or cut through a pipe or wire when digging. Dann also recommends laying a plastic weed barrier, which also helps improve drainage.

How Decks Connect to Homes

Installing a ledger board is the most secure way to connect a deck to a house. That way, you’ll be using the solid structure of the house to support your deck. The ledger has the same dimensions as the rest of the deck joists, and it serves as a rim joist to support the joists running perpendicular to the wall.

Like the joists, the ledger should be made from pressure-treated wood to prevent rot. “A rotted ledger board is a disaster,” says Dann. “It compromises the stability of the entire deck, the rot often spreads to the building’s structure, and it’s difficult to replace without demolishing a significant portion of the deck.”

Attaching a Deck Ledger

Rather than attaching the ledger board to the siding, Dann typically cuts the siding back so he can attach the ledger to the sheathing. After cutting the ledger to the proper length, he attaches it with long fasteners that will go all the way through the sheathing and penetrate the building’s band joist.

“Don’t use nails,” he cautions. “They’ll pull out.” The old-school fastening method uses 1/2-in. galvanized lag screws, but most builders these days opt for 1/4-in. structural screws they can drive with an impact driver. Despite the smaller diameter, they are stronger and speed up the project. Local building codes usually regulate how many screws you need and where you should place them, so do your research before you start the project.

Proper Deck Height

The ledger board’s height determines the deck’s height, and to prevent water pooling and ice build-up, the deck surface should be an inch or two below the thresholds of the doors that open onto the deck. To determine the height of the ledger, add the thickness of the decking to this gap. For example, if you set the deck two inches below the door thresholds and you use 1 1/2-in. decking, place the ledger board 3-1/2 inches below the thresholds.

The height of the ledger board determines the lengths of the deck posts, which is why Dann always sets the ledger before cutting the posts. Once the ledger is in place, it’s easy to attach a line to the top, stretch it out to each post, level it with a line level and make marks. All he has to do is lower these marks by the width of the beams the posts support, and he can mark the cut lines on the posts.

Why Flashing is Important

Even if you leave a gap between the top of the deck and the door thresholds, water will still run off the ends of the decking and seep down along the siding. You must install flashing to prevent the ledger and the siding from rotting.

Dann installs metal Z-flashing (drip cap) over the entire length of the top of the ledger and tucks the vertical portion under the siding. When working with horizontal cladding, he removes cladding boards to expose the sheathing and installs new cladding directly over the flashing. He then custom-cuts and fits another strip of flashing to put over this drip cap and under doors to cover and protect remaining unflashed areas under door sills. Finally, he caulks the gap between the flashing and the bottom of door thresholds.

It’s good practice to also install Z-flashing behind the bottom of the ledger and over the siding below. This keeps water from wicking along the bottom of the ledger and getting behind the siding. To keep water from leaking behind the ends of the ledger, Dann leaves a 1/8-in. gap between the end of the ledger and the ends of the siding and fills it with high-quality exterior caulk.

FAQs

Do I need a permit to build a deck attached to my house?

Yes. Most decks require permits. The International Residential Code provides an exemption for a deck built less than 30 inches above the surrounding grade and with a total area of less than 200 square feet, but not if the deck is attached to the house. Be sure to obtain this permit before you start, or you might have to tear it down after completing all the work.

Will adding a deck increase the resale value of my home?

Generally, yes. The amount varies, but it’s generally in the neighborhood of 60 to 75 percent of the cost of building the deck. The actual bump in your home’s resale value depends on a number of factors, including the materials you use and the design of the deck. Climate is also a factor: A deck adds more value if the climate is warm enough for people to spend time outside using it.

How To Clean Patio Pavers Without a Pressure Washer https://www.familyhandyman.com/project/clean-pavers/ https://www.familyhandyman.com/project/clean-pavers/#respond Thu, 20 Jun 2024 14:31:12 +0000 https://www.familyhandyman.com/?post_type=project&p=620248 Do your patio pavers need a good washing, but you're unsure how to do it without a pressure washer? The great news is you can clean pavers with just a few tools, materials and some elbow grease.

The post How To Clean Patio Pavers Without a Pressure Washer appeared first on Family Handyman.

]]>

Although pavers are known for their durability, pressure washing may damage them if you’re not careful or use the wrong equipment. Conversely, properly maintaining and washing pavers keeps them looking good for years. “Pavers are durable but do need some light routine maintenance to keep them looking clean and fresh,” Joe Raboine from Oldcastle APG says. Read on to learn how to clean your patio pavers without a pressure washer with pro tips from Raboine and Ryan Farley from Lawnstarter.

Safety Precautions

Wear gloves and protective glasses if using harsh chemicals. Pavers can become slippery when wet, so wear sturdy, non-slip footwear.

When to Call a Pro

If stains are too severe for a DIY cleaning job or your pavers are starting to wear, contact a professional for an assessment.

How much does it cost to hire a pro?

There are many factors to consider, but expect to pay between $1 and $2 per sq. ft. to have your pavers cleaned, sand replaced and sealed.

Remove objects and debris

  • Remove furniture, plants and all other objects from the patio.
  • “Sweep off your paver patio to remove dirt, debris and leaf buildup,” Raboine says.
  • Remove weeds from between pavers with a weeding tool. Wear gardening gloves to protect your hands.

FAQs

How to waterproof a TV for outdoors?

You can waterproof an outdoor TV using a cover made from water- and mildew-resistant materials. You can also ensure that the TV is fully under the cover of a deck or closed porch. There are also plenty of outdoor TV enclosures and cabinets.

Is it okay to put a regular TV outside?

It might seem like a good idea to put any TV outside, but regular picks are not suitable for withstanding the elements, even if they’re under an enclosure. In addition to being unable to handle water, the sun will also ruin these TV screens.

How long will a regular TV last outside?

Outside TVs can last for years, depending on how you care for them. Even with the best upkeep, these TVs last six to twelve months. Condescension and the sun can start corroding the internal components of the TV.

How to Make a Wooden Disc Swing https://www.familyhandyman.com/project/disc-swing/ Thu, 16 May 2024 17:26:34 +0000 https://www.familyhandyman.com/?post_type=project&p=607530 Here's how to make a disc swing in two different ways. An elaborate version using a woodturning lathe and a simpler version using a router.

The post How to Make a Wooden Disc Swing appeared first on Family Handyman.

]]>

Building a disc swing using a woodturning lathe is probably one of my favorite projects. Truth be told, anything made on a lathe will be among my favorites because it is my all-time favorite tool! Once you know the woodturning basics, making a disc swing on a lathe is woodturning 101.

A woodturning lathe is statistically the last tool a carpenter sets out to use. It does have a steep learning curve, and the initial investment to get started can be pricey. However, there are ways to get your hands on a lathe without purchasing one. Some woodworking stores give lessons and have open studio time, and many woodturning clubs have lathes available to their members. I promise: once you try woodturning, you’ll want to do more.

Here I share the steps to making a disc swing on a lathe, a very easy woodturning project once you have mastered the basics. Alternatively, you may choose to use a router to construct the swing, which I also discuss below.

Prep wood for turning

Regardless of the size of the wood you will mount, find the center and pencil out your circle. Use a miter saw to cut 45-degree cuts close to your line on your circle to eliminate as much of the wood outside the circle as possible. You will end up with an octagon. This will help you reach a balanced circle faster once you start cutting with the chisels on the lathe.

6 Ways To Create A Cooling Patio In 2024 Choose The Right Trees To Shade The Sun Courtesy @bowerandbranch Instagram

Choose the Right Trees to Shade the Sun

“For planting around patios, it is so important to clearly understand the desired shade and from what direction this will come,” says Don Eaton, founder of the premium tree and plant company Bower & Branch, which serves homeowners nationwide. “We can plant for morning shade and/or afternoon shade. I always plant for filtered shade beginning around noon and going deeper through the evening when I most enjoy my patio.”

Don recommends, “Japanese maples, non-weeping, are a great choice. Bloodgood Japanese maple is an easy one to grow and a reliable small tree that results in minimal mess,” adding, “I like to include small or slow-growing evergreens, like umbrella pine or Wells-special Hinoki cypress. I also very much like redbuds and dogwoods, which are two (types) of small flowering trees without a mess.”

What We Like About It: Not only do larger specimens provide shade to cool the space, like in this example showing a redbud variety from @BowerandBranch, but they’re so much more interesting than a solid wall or other surface. Adding trees with various leaf types and growing habits brings the space to life.

Tips For Choosing And Buying Deck Lumber Buy Pressure-Treated Lumber With the Right Amount of Preservative for the Job

Buy Pressure-Treated Lumber With the Right Amount of Preservative for the Job

Use pressure-treated lumber for the structural part of your deck the posts, joists, beams and other members you normally don’t see. It’s the logical choice; PT lumber can support more weight and span longer distances than cedar, redwood, or other woods commonly used for building decks. It’s also much less expensive.

The lumber industry rates PT lumber according to the pounds of preservative retained per cubic foot of wood; the higher the number, the better the protection against fungi and insect attacks. Select decking boards with the preservative concentration suitable for their use. The wood used in situations where it’s more likely to rot more preservatives.

The three common ratings, which correspond to preservative concentration, are:

  • Above-grade, use .25 (sometimes .15). This includes decking, fence and railing material.
  • Ground-contact, use .40. This includes posts, beams, joists and decking.
  • Below-grade, use .60. This includes support posts that are partially buried below grade and for permanent wood foundations and planters.

Note: Decking boards are tagged with the concentration and treating solution used. CCA (chromated copper arsenate) was once the most common preservative, but it was phased out in 2004 in favor of ACQ (alkaline copper quat) and other preservatives because of health concerns. “Modern preservatives are certified safe for plants, animals, people, ponds, and waterways,” says Kou.

How to Prep an Older Deck for Re-Staining https://www.familyhandyman.com/project/how-to-prep-a-deck-for-staining/ Tue, 23 Apr 2024 20:24:47 +0000 https://www.familyhandyman.com/?post_type=project&p=610274 Has your wood deck seen better days? Restaining an older deck is a cost-effective, DIY-friendly way to quickly improve the look of your outdoor space. With some elbow grease and a few basic tools and products, your deck will look like new once more. I love re-staining older decks, because the before and after is so gratifying.

Here, we'll focus on how to prep a deck for staining, including repairing, cleaning and sanding. Read on to learn helpful tips with Rachel Otto from Fleury Lumber and Shayne Pancione from Pancione Painting Plus.

Why Prep Your Deck Before Re-staining?

Thorough prep work is critical when re-staining a deck. Unlike paint, stain needs to penetrate into the wood surface to protect the deck from water and sun damage.

Proper prep work removes old coatings, cleans the wood and opens up wood pores to readily absorb new stain. Without these steps, new finishes can fail early. "If you have a deck that's older and in rough shape, take time to clean the wood, brighten it and restore it before re-staining," Otto says.

Make repairs

Make any necessary repairs before re-staining.

  • Secure any loose fasteners on the deck with a hammer or cordless drill.
  • Replace large areas of rotted wood or entire boards if necessary. Use an oscillating saw with a plunge blade to remove rotted sections at the joists. Use a pry bar to pull up boards.
  • Repair any rotted spots on boards. Pancione says to scrape out the rotted wood, then fill it with a stainable two-part wood filler epoxy.

What is the “best” backyard? While its hard to define what actually makes a backyard the best, we think any backyard where you enjoy spending time is a winner. All it takes is a little inspiration and some DIY know-how.

On the fourth episode of the At Home with Family Handyman series The Outdoor Show, we got an up-close look at two projects that transformed a pair of homes. At one location, we see the addition of two gazebos, giving that backyard dual shady spots for relaxing outdoors. The other project was a pool and deck combination that turned a basic backyard into something closer to Club Med.

A gazebo is a great addition to any yard because it gives you a little oasis for kicking back when the weathers warm. Building a gazebo is a multi-day project, depending on the complexity of the design. But its still something most people can DIY. There are also gazebo kits that save you some time, too.

If a gazebo isnt your speed, you could build a pergola, another way to add a shady nook in your backyard (learn the difference between the two). Theyre great for covering a paver patio or spot in your garden. Another option is the classic screened-in porch, a simple way to enclose your outdoor space so you can relax outdoors without being bothered by flies or mosquitoes. Check out our favorite backyard gazebo ideas for summer.

When its hot outside, a pool really makes a terrific addition to any backyard. But to really improve the look and feel, its best to surround it with a deck or building an arched bridge. There are a few options for decking materials go, so make sure to choose something thats durable and fits the look you want.

Building a deck is one of the most common large DIY projects. While theres a lot that goes into it, theres no reason to be intimidated by the task.

Whatever you choose to make your backyard a little more comfortable, be sure to check out The Outdoor Show, streaming on At Home with Family Handyman, for guidance and inspiration. And while youre on the At Home with Family Handyman app, check out the library of instructional videos for step-by-step instructions for building the perfect outdoor oasis.

Want patio warmth but dont have room for a large outdoor heater on your precious patio space? The new Solo Stove Mesa heat deflector is here to transform your Solo Stove Mesa (aka your mini fire pit) into the ultimate mini outdoor heater.

The Mesa heat deflector doubles the heating radius of your Mesa to ensure that everyone is cozy and warm around the outdoor dining table. It merges functionality and style to create the ideal patio centerpiece. (If you don’t have the Mesa yet and you’re curious, scope out my full Mesa review.)

Heres what you need to know about the all-new Mesa heat deflector.

What is the Solo Stove Mesa heat deflector?

Solo Stove Heat Deflector box

The Mesa heat deflector is a must-have Solo Stove accessory for your existing Mesa or Mesa XL tabletop fire pit. It sits directly on top of your Mesa to push heat outward and increase its heating radius by 2 feet or more. Logs and/or pellets can be added while the heat deflector is in place to keep the fire going throughout the night.

Constructed from Solo Stoves famous 304 stainless steel, the Mesa heat deflector is built to last a just as long as your other Solo Stove gear for a lifetime of warm moments alongside your fire pit.

We Tried It

Solo Stove Mesa Heat Deflector

You need this heat deflector that extends the warming radius of your Solo Stove Mesa or Mesa XL.

Solo Stove Mesa Heat Deflector Features

The round, angled shape of the Mesa heat deflector redirects warm air out while the perforated grates in the center allow the fire to breathe. The deflector sits high enough above the Mesa that you can add fuel via any of the three easy-access windows without removing the deflector. It weighs less than one pound and comes with a carrying bag. Its only 5 inches tall and has a diameter of less than 8 inches, so it takes up virtually no extra space on top of your Mesa.

The heat deflector tends to accumulate soot after multiple uses since it sits above the fire. However, it’s easy to clean with mild soap and water. For tougher grime, stainless steel cleaner works well. Its unique shape makes storage a bit awkward despite the included carry bag, so consider dedicating a space for it between uses.

How We Tested It

Fhma23 Solo Stove Heat Deflector Mary Henn 06 Jvedit2

The Solo Stove Mesa heat deflector arrived in a small box with the new metallic Mesa fire pit. (Yes, I couldnt help myself and had to get my hands on one of the latest metallic colors from Solo Stove.) Both the deflector and the Mesa are incredibly lightweight and require little to no assembly to setup.

The Mesa is good to go out of the box once the base is popped on the bottom, and the Mesa heat deflector takes just a couple of minutes to snap into place. All you have to do is slide three legs onto the included base ring and secure them to the underside of the deflector. After that, your heat deflector is ready to sit on top of your Mesa fire pit. It’s recommended that you start a fire using pellets or mini logs and allow the fire to burn for five to 10 minutes before placing the heat deflector on top. Youll want to use high-heat gloves or tools to gently place the deflectors base ring inside the outer lip of the Mesa.

Once your fire is roaring and the deflector is placed on top of the Mesa, you should notice heat radiating from the fire pit. With secure and spaced posts, you can add additional fuel while the heat deflector is in place and enjoy the warmth and coziness of your Mesa for as long as you desire.

I was surprised by the amount of heat the Mesa put out with the added heat deflector. My partner and I gathered around the fire pit on a chilly evening and noticed significant warmth radiating from it while it sat in between us (about 1.5 feet away from each of us). Plus, the new metallic finish added a festive holiday hue and a dose of cheer to our patio. I can’t wait to use it when we have family and friends over this holiday season.

FAQ

Why use a heat deflector?

In a fire pit, most heat rises directly upward, limiting the area of warmth. A heat deflector redirects this heat horizontally, expanding the warmth radius and making the experience more comfortable, especially on colder days.

Do Solo Stove heat deflectors work?

Yes. The Solo Stove Mesa Heat Deflector increases the heat radius by two feet or more, while also reflecting some heat back into the fire to boost efficiency and reduce fuel needs. However, the deflector gets extremely hot, so let it cool completely or use oven gloves to avoid burns. Keep pets and children away until it cools.

Is the Mesa Heat Deflector compatible with other Solo Stove models?

The Mesa Heat Deflector is made for the Mesa tabletop fire pit, but Solo Stove offers deflectors compatible with models like the Bonfire, Ranger, Canyon and Yukon. Adding one to these can enhance your experience.

Product Comparison

Fire pit heat deflectors aren’t newmany large, standalone models have been around for some time. These are often designed to fit a variety of fire pits, but they tend to be bulky, with basic designs that resemble metal plates on legs.

The key difference with the Solo Stove Mesa Heat Deflector is its space-efficient design, tailored specifically for Solo Stove fire pits. If you own or are considering a Solo Stove, this compatibility and space-saving design might justify the purchase.

Another notable difference is the cost. While third-party deflectors typically start around $50, the Mesa Heat Deflector is more affordable at $35 for the small version and $40 for the XL.

Final Verdict

If you own or are thinking about buying a Mesa or Mesa XL (or Bonfire or Yukon), the Mesa heat deflector is a must-have accessory during the colder months that’ll help you enjoy tabletop warmth and s’mores all year long.

Our Favorite Mesa Accessories

Solo Stove accesories

In addition to the new Mesa heat deflector, I love theMesa accessory pack, which includes a pellet scoop, Mesa lid, mini sticks and stick rests for roasting s’mores over your small fire. Another winner is the mini oak firewood, which is cut to give you the perfect size flame in your Mesa. When it comes to elevating your backyard setup, there are a few items that stand out among the rest. A nice fire pit, outdoor lighting, a reliable grill and comfortable seating are at top of most homeowners’ lists when it comes to making a patio or deck space enjoyable for all. And if you do find yourself gathered around your Bonfire or other fire pit often, the right fire pit seating ideas are crucial to completing the experience.

Solo Stoveyes, the brand that makes fire pits, outdoor torch lights, pizza ovens and morerecently launched an Adirondack chair through its sister brand, Terra Flame. Naturally, if it comes from Solo Brands, we’re interested. So, we snagged the 1903 Adirondack chair as quickly as we could, assembled it and tested it to write this review. Now you can decide if its something you want to spend your money on. Heres what we learned.

What is the Solo Stove Adirondack chair?

1903 Adirondack Modern Chair in Backyard

If youve shopped for outdoor furniture before, youve probably noticed that Adirondack chairs in general tend to be on the pricier side. Thats because Adirondack chairs are known for their comfort, durability and sleek design. Plus, they have wide arms and an inclined back, so you can feel comfortable and relaxed whether youre on the patio, at the beach or on gravel and other rough terrain.

The 1903 Adirondack modern chair from Solo Stove combines the classic, timeless design with new, lightweight outdoor materials. The chair is made of high-density polyethylene (HDPE), an eco-friendly composite made partially from recycled plastics. HDPE is frequently used in plastic lumber and wood plastic composites because of its resistance to corrosion.

While the chairs materials are resistant to corrosion, the chair also seems to be less prone to chipping and peeling than a chair made of wood. That means you wont have to worry about snagging clothes or blankets on splinters with this chair, either.

We Tried It

Solo Stove 1903 Adirondack Modern Chair

Solo Stove now makes a sleek, lightweight Adirondack chair for your backyard fire pit setup.

Solo Stove Adirondack Chair Features

Because Solo Stoves chair is made with HDPE, its lighter than other Adirondacks made of solid wood. It weighs about 45 pounds, so its not too difficult to move across the patio when rearranging furniture or making room for additional seating. This is certainly a plus if you’re like me and find yourself frequently rearranging patio furniture when entertaining family and friends.

For reference, the 1903 Adirondack chair is 30 inches wide and 32 inches in length. The width of the chairs seat is 20.5 inches, and the arm length is 29 inches. The seat is very wide, like most Adirondack chairs, and most people won’t have a problem wrapping up in a blanket and snuggling into the chair. It also comes in white and gray color options. The gray is a versatile dark slate color that’ll go with a range of patio decor and furniture.

How We Tested It

1903 Adirondack Modern Chair in backyard

The 1903 Adirondack chair arrived at my doorstep in a deceptively small, thin package, which was easy to haul through the house and out to the backyard. That said, the chair does require some assembly, but all the major components (the seat and back of the chair) come preassembled, meaning youre just attaching the main parts of the chair. Additionally, all the tools and parts you need for assembly are included, so you won’t need your toolbox handy for this project.

Assembly did take a little bit longer than I had anticipated. Thats because the screws on the bottom of the chair were a tad difficult to screw in. To get the arms and front legs onto the base of the chair, you have to screw six small screws into the inside panels on the bottom of the chair. Then, you have to screw another eight screws into the seat to fix it to the back of the chair. All of the screws are tightened using the included L-wrench, which is difficult to turn without running into other parts on the underside of the chair. While its certainly nice to have the screws hidden on the inside of the panels for its overall appearance, tightening the screws was a tedious process that took longer than it should have. I also ended up scratching the underside of the chair with the L-wrench, too. Thankfully, the scratches were hidden along with the screws on the bottom of the chair.

Once the chair was put together, it looked and felt incredibly sturdy. I liked the overall look and design of the Solo Stove chair more than I expected to! Truthfully, it’s one of the nicest looking Adirondack chairs Ive seen. The two-panel back seamlessly streamlines into the armrests and seat of the chair. It looks great in any environment: on the lawn, on the patio near a fire, by the poolyou name it.

The chair was rained on the first night I had it assembled (naturally, right?), which I was a little bit bummed about at first. But the Solo Stove chair is completely waterproof. I wiped it down the next morning, and it was good as new. That also clued me into the fact that the chair will be super easy to clean with water and a rag, which I appreciate.

Pros

  • Durable material and construction
  • Sleek, contemporary design
  • Weighs just 45 pounds
  • Easy to assemble and clean
  • Comfortable
  • Sturdy
  • Waterproof and weather-resistant
  • White and gray color options

Cons

  • May scratch if contacted with metal surface or tool
  • Pricey, but comparable to other quality Adirondack chairs

FAQ

1903 Adirondack Modern Chair

Are Adirondack chairs good for fire pits?

Absolutely! Adirondack chairs offer low, relaxed seating at the same level of most backyard fire pits. Plus, theyre typically weather-resistant and wide, so you can wrap up in a blanket and recline into the chair for the coziest outdoor lounging experience.

How far should chairs be from a fire pit?

The distance between your fire pit and patio furniture is largely a matter of personal preference and relative to the size of your patio or backyard space. Generally, its good to be at least 18 to 24 inches from a fire pit for your safety. Using a heat-deflecting device on top of your fire pit helps radiate heat outward and allows you to feel the warmth while sitting farther back from the flames.

What Other Reviewers Had to Say

Buyers are loving the Solo Stove chair as much as we are. Heres what some of them have to say about it:

Verified buyer, Alma C., calls the chair “terrific.” She writes, The instructions for assembling were clear to understand. The chairs are sturdy, look great on my terrace and I look forward to many years of use.

Joshua F., a five-star reviewer, was surprised by the overall quality of the chair. The chair was in a simple package that was perfect size. Took me about 20 minutes to get together. Its super solid, very smooth and looks incredible. We are in the pool business and thinking about giving a pair of these away with each pool.

Final Verdict

If youre in the market to upgrade your fire pit seating and patio furniture, then look no further. The 1903 Adirondack chair offers comfortable, durable and weather-resistant seating from a fire pit brand we love and trust. We recommend the Solo Stove chair for its overall appearance, sturdiness, reasonable price point and movability.

How to Choose the Right Composite Decking Color https://www.familyhandyman.com/article/composite-decking-colors/ Tue, 19 Mar 2024 17:16:47 +0000 https://www.familyhandyman.com/?p=392526 Composite decking comes in an array of colors, so choosing a shade that complements your home can be a challenge. Use these expert tips as a guide.

The post How to Choose the Right Composite Decking Color appeared first on Family Handyman.

]]>
Composite decking colors have come a long way. To keep up with design trends and provide customers more variety, decking manufacturers now offer a vast assortment of hues and grains. However, this range of choices can be confusing for homeowners struggling to find the perfect tone and texture for their deck.

Settling on the “right” color is mainly a matter of personal taste. Here are a few suggestions for choosing composite decking that will enhance the beauty of and add value to your home and withstand the test of time, so you’ll enjoy it well into the future.

Use Decking Colors to Complement Your Home Design

Your deck should complement your home’s overall look and create a sense of harmony.

Begin by considering the dominant color family feautred on your home’s exteriors. Are the colors mainly warm with red or orange undertones, or cooler colors with blue or green hues? Warm colors pair well with deep browns and burgundies while cooler colors shine against lighter grays or tans.

Once you’ve identified whether your home exteriors lean towards warm or cool tones, you can narrow your color choices to options within the same family. That doesn’t mean you have to match the color exactly.

“Balance is key,” advises MoistureShield Senior Brand Manager Molly Werner. “Don’t be afraid to experiment with contrasting colors.

“You can create impactful designs by using contrasts to your advantage. Mix dark and light colors or dark browns with blondes! You can even create an `area rug’ effect, starburst design or border using contrasting colors.”

Also consider the architectural style of your home, according to Blythe Yost, CEO and co-founder of Tilly, an online landscape design company. “Are you more traditional or more transitional?” she asks. “Traditional decking tends to be browner, more contemporary selections are grayer.”

Consider Your Location

Also consider your wider geographic location. If you live in a thickly wooded area, like New England or the Pacific Northwest, composite decking with deep brown or reddish hues will blend well with the surrounding vegetation. For coastal homes in Florida or California, light honey or driftwood-gray shades capture a beachy, nautical vibe that perfectly fits the oceanfront.

Remember, too, that darker colors retain more heat under direct sunlight. These tones are not a good choice for warm, sunny climates where deck temperatures can reach 160 degrees F, according to research by MoistureShield.

“If you are looking at a dark brown decking option in a southern application, be sure you have ample shade to offset the heat,” Yost says. “Alternatively, the lighter options can be almost reflective in the sun and make for an overly bright space.”

Use Deck Color to Add Depth

Once you’ve chosen a cool or warm tone, add some depth to your deck. Composite decking colors are often variegated to look more like natural wood grain. “Simply defined,” explains Werner, “variegated means exhibiting different colors, especially as irregular patches or streaks, in plants for example.”

Most composite decking manufacturers use variegated patterns and multiple colors to emulate natural wood, but some look more natural than others. “It is not necessary to select the most lifelike version, but you should look at the different solutions developed by different manufacturers one may appeal to you more than another,” advises Yost.

Don’t Forget the Railing Color

You can add a dash of flair to your deck by choosing a railing that’s a different color than your home’s exterior or the decking itself. A railing in a similar yet complementary shade creates a seamless, understated look that creates cohesion between your home’s architectural style and outdoor space. You can also match the deck railing to the color of your window frames for a pleasing color echo.

Railing in a contrasting color adds a pop of statement style for a more eye-catching, professional design feel. The most popular options are white and black. White complements most exterior and decking colors and is especially popular in coastal areas. Black railings add a chic touch to brick or stone houses.

At-Home Trial

Choosing a color for your composite decking and railing is an important decision. So before you commit to a shade and texture, request a sample to judge the color next to your home.

“Be sure to get samples of the decking options and look at them in many different lights and angles,” suggests Werner. “Colors can feel very different in the shadows of morning versus the heat of the day.”

Viewing a few samples can also help you settle on a final choice. It may take some time to choose the right composite decking color to suit your home and style, but the extra effort will be worth it once you have an inviting deck that you and your family will love for years to come.

Simple cuts and a no-hassle glue-and-screw assembly technique make this swing a great first-time woodworking project. We designed the swing with a unique suspension system made from 1/2-in. galvanized steel pipe slipped through the swing frame to act as a cradle and eliminate stress on wood joints. We then fastened eye bolts through the steel pipe and covered the pipe ends with soft rubber caps to prevent scrapes. Welded steel chain supports the swing assembly, securely fastened to solid framing in the roof of your front porch, pergola or pavilion.

When selecting a wood for this outdoor project, stay away from cedar, redwood and soft pine. Theyll mar easily and they wont hold screws as well as other, denser woods. Instead, go with fir, southern yellow pine, cypress, poplar, white oak or maple. Oak and maple are harder to cut, sand, drill and screw, so avoid them if youre a first-timer. We chose poplar because its strong, readily available, easy to work with and takes paint well.

I wanted to spruce up our deck while adding a touch of greenery so I decided to create a deck railing planter. I had some leftover cedar wood from a deck project, which was perfect for this project.

This is a pretty simple project, so it’s great if you’re a new DIYer. Plus, it takes less than a day to build it. Railing planters make a great addition to a deck, giving it some bright colors that really add to the overall setting. There are huge variety of plants you can grow in planters, and a wide selection of them that don’t require a green thumb.

Planters also provide a practical way to grow your favorite plants, herbs, or flowers. If you don’t have a lot of space for a big garden, or if you just want to squeeze in a few more plants around your house, this project takes advantage of the space along your deck railing. This means you can enjoy a flourishing garden without sacrificing valuable floor space.

Can You Put a Hot Tub on a Deck? https://www.familyhandyman.com/article/hot-tub-on-deck/ Mon, 11 Dec 2023 19:07:14 +0000 Decide if your deck is the right spot for a new hot tub with help from industry experts.

The post Can You Put a Hot Tub on a Deck? appeared first on Family Handyman.

]]>
If you’re thinking of getting ahot tub, your deck can seem like the perfect place to put it. The good news is, you can put one on a deck. But you’ll need thoughtful planning and the help of a contractor or structural engineer to do it safely.

If this project is on your wish list, read on for expert tips from four industry pros: Dusty Walters, owner of a hot tub sales and service company; Chris Hoppe, a structural engineer; Chris Jacobs, a licensed contractor; and Dennis Moore, a hot tub installer.

How To Tell If Your Hot Tub Is Deck Friendly

When purchasing a hot tub for your deck, carefully consider its weight and size.

Weight

Hot tubs are heavy. Even when empty, they can weigh 400 to 1,000 pounds. Filled with water and people, that number can soar to more than 10,000 pounds for larger models. “A hot tub full of water can weigh as much as a car,” Hoppe says. Most decks can’t support a load that large.

However, most decks can handle smaller to medium-sized tubs that hold three to six people and less than 600 gallons of water. These usually weigh 4,000 to 6,000 pounds when occupied a more manageable number. “A lot of tubs can fit on a residential deck, unless it’s a monster,” Jacobs says.

Size

Hot tubs have standard size ranges for small, medium and large models.

To determine what size hot tub will fit on your deck, use painter’s tape to mark these dimensions on the deck floor. See which size leaves enough room for walking, furniture and maintenance access. You’ll need 24 to 36 inches of clearance around all four sides.

Deck Considerations for a Hot Tub

Strength

“Decks must be properly supported and built to support the weight of a spa,” Moore says.

Most decks are built with 2- by 8-inch joists (floor supports) spaced 16 inches apart from the center of one board to the center of the next. Decks built this way can support 50 pounds per square foot (pps).

“What this means is, if you take a 12- by 12-inch bag of sand that weighs fifty pounds and laid it on every square foot on the deck, that is what it can hold,” Jacobs says. Put another way: A 100-sq.-ft. deck built to code could hold 5,000 pounds.

So how much weight can your deck handle? Whatever your structural engineer or contractor says it can. “We always recommend having an engineer check the deck to make sure it can handle the weight of the spa,” Walters says.

In the early planning stages, you can do some measuring and basic math to get a rough estimate. Go underneath the deck and measure the width of your joists and their distance apart. If they’re eight inches wide and spaced 16 inches apart, multiply your deck’s square footage by 50 for a rough idea of how much weight it can hold.

If your deck’s joists are a different measurement, consult with a pro to determine its weight limits.

Height

If your deck is really high off the ground, installation is still possible, but it will be more complex and expensive.

Walters doesn’t recommend carrying hot tubs on stairs, because it can damage the deck or spa. Instead, he uses a crane for installations higher than four or five feet off the ground. Make sure to factor in this cost to your project total.

Proximity to utilities

You’ll need a properly rated receptacle installed near your hot tub. The longer the distance between the hot tub and the main breaker box, the more expensive this will be. So consider this cost when determining if your deck is the best location.

Access to water will be necessary as well. A hose should reach the hot tub for filling and occasional topping off. Check the proximity of an outside spigot to your deck, or hire a plumber to add one closer to the tub.

Age

An aging deck may not be the best candidate for a hot tub. Exposure to the elements and ultraviolet rays can weaken deck boards over time. Also, older decks may not be built to today’s code requirements and could pose a safety risk.

If your deck is showing signs of decay weathered or split boards, rotting posts or loose railings consult with a contractor to assess its safety.

Reinforce the Deck

If your deck can’t hold the weight of the hot tub you want, structural reinforcements can be installed to increase its strength. Your engineer or contractor may suggest adding wider joists more closely spaced to support the additional weight.

They also may want to add or widen the deck’s footings. Footings are the structural support posts of a deck that evenly transfer the load to the ground. “Without stronger footings, [the deck] could start to sink under its own weight,” Jacobs says.

Sink the Hot Tub Into the Deck Instead

Another option is installing a recessed hot tub. Instead of resting on top of the deck, the tub sits on a poured concrete slab under it, so the top edge is flush or just above the deck floor. This eliminates the need to climb over the walls to enter and exit.

This setup has deck height requirements and must allow for maintenance access as well. “There are very specific things that need to be done to create service access on all four sides of the spa if you sink the spa into the deck,” Moore says. This can include decking and lattice skirting which can be removed to allow service workers to complete maintenance tasks.

An outdoor table should be tough. After all, it stays out in the weather and needs to withstand summer BBQ spills, toy car races, rocks from the yard and all the things your family will place on it. This is a simple design that uses rugged, low-maintenance PVC, plus rot- and weather-resistant cedar.

It’s best to use a miter saw to cut all your parts, but a circular saw will be just fine if youre accurate with your cuts.

I set up a stop block on my miter saw to cut the legs, side and end aprons, and stretchers out of the deck lumber. With a stop block, I can make sure each part is cut to the same length. Next, get to know how to pour concrete apron.

Are you ready to elevate your outdoor space and create the perfect spot for backyard relaxation? Look no further than a porch swing! Hanging one may seem daunting, but with our step-by-step guide you’ll have your swing up in no time. Let’s get started!

Prop the swing

Set the porch swing near the space youd like to hang it and prop it up so it sits at a comfortable angle. I like to use the arm rests as a guide. If they’re just about parallel with the ground, it should be at a comfortable sitting angle. Dont worry if it’s not quite right after you hang it; it can be adjusted.

Does the Viral Paper Bag Wasp Deterrent Trick Really Work? https://www.familyhandyman.com/article/paper-bag-wasp-deterrent-trick/ Mon, 11 Sep 2023 16:26:16 +0000 https://www.familyhandyman.com/?p=566499 Here's what experts really think about the popular TikTok hack.

Though it’s already September, many homeowners are still dealing with pesky wasp invasions. And while there are numerous chemical solutions to eradicate wasps, some people seek gentler and less dangerous methods to deter the pests.

Enter the latest viral wasp solution: using a plain paper bag to force wasps to move out.

The phrase “wasp paper bag trick” has drawn more than 270 million views on TikTok, thanks to its surprising and humorous approach. But is it really effective? In this article, we’ll fact-check the trendy pest control trick.

What Is the Paper Bag Wasp Deterrent Trick?

On TikTok, Pivot Farm (@pivotfarm), a family account for homesteaders Brandelyn and Joe Tafoya, tries the hack. The video’s narrator presumably Joe explains:

“I saw somewhere on a video that said if you hang a bag next to your wasp nest it’ll make them move out because they’re super territorial.”

The camera then pans over to show a brown paper bag hanging about a foot or two away from a wasp nest, seemingly devoid of insects.

Here’s the idea behind the paper bag wasp deterrent trick: If you hang a paper bag that’s slightly inflated, the wasps will mistake it for a rival nest and vacate the real hive, avoiding the use of harmful chemicals or expensive treatments.

Does the Paper Bag Wasp Deterrent Trick Work?

In the video, Joe Tafoya says he “never thought [the trick] would work.” And yet, he claims, it did: “In about two weeks, they all just left.”

Hundreds, if not thousands, of users echoed their enthusiasm for the method. That includes Jean H. Spin, who according to USA Today posted the trick on Facebook in 2020.

However, experts on wasp behavior warn the paper bag deterrent trick isn’t foolproof. Michael Skvarla, Ph.D., an assistant research professor of arthropod identification and director of the Insect Identification Laboratory at Pennsylvania State University, told USA Today the wasps usually aren’t fooled.

“[P]aper bags and other devices don’t stop wasps from nesting because they don’t perceive such objects as nests,” he says.

Why not? “[P]aper bags lack any smells or chemical cues that would indicate they’re nests and do not have worker wasps defending them,” Skvarla says. Ultimately, he adds, “[W]hile wasps are highly visual insects, the simple shape of an object isn’t enough to deter them.”

Are There Any Risks to Using Paper Bags as Wasp Deterrents?

Unfortunately, it’s possible hanging a paper bag next to a wasp nest could actually encourage the pests to stay put. That’s because wasps use paper to build their nests, so they may find this a welcome help in crafting their new home.

Additionally, wasps often nest inside commercial products, according to Skvarla. So the paper bag trick may be “providing habitat to wasps rather than deterring them.”

How Should I Properly Deter Wasps?

In most instances, Skvarla suggests leaving the wasps be. They serve a purpose in your yard, acting as natural pest control for other insects, like caterpillars and flies. However, if a wasp nest poses an immediate safety risk say, when it’s in a high-traffic area, or someone in your home is allergic to wasp stings Skvarla says it needs to go.

To remove a hanging wasp nest, opt for a long-distance spray like Ortho Home Defense Hornet and Wasp Killer, or even a DIY mix with Dawn dish soap. Apply it in the evening, early in the season. For next year, you can also prepare to eliminate the wasp queen in springtime. Stay safe out there!

Deck Joist Jig

Simplify Deck Joist Hanging

The easiest method for running deck joists, especially when you’re working alone, is to attach joist hangers to the ledger board before installing your joists. The trick is to set them at the right height. Take a few minutes to tack together the jig shown here.

You can build the jig with a 5 x 12-in. piece of plywood and a scrap 2×4 cut to the width of your joists. Align the 2×4 to your layout line. Tack the plywood to the top of the ledger, making sure it’s tight. Place the joist hanger around the 2×4 and nail 16d galvanized nails through all the holes into the ledger board.

Cut the 2×4 to the average width of the joists (sometimes the joists will vary in width as much as 1/4 in.). Nail both sides of the hanger flanges to the ledger, leaving one side with about a 1/16-in. gap so a wet joist can slide into place. As you set your joists, chisel out a notch on the bottom if the joist sits too high or shim it if it’s too low.
