Have you ever wondered exactly whathappens inside your dishwasher once you close the door and start the cycle? How does it manage to get all the food remnants off? The crew over at Warped,@warped.yton TikTok, has the answer. They stuck a GoPro inside theirdishwasher and let it record the whole hour-long cycle. The final cut is sped up so that you can see exactly what happens while it runsin a fraction of the time.

@warped.yt Gopro Inside a Dishwasher P.2 #fyp #dishwasher #how #howitworks #whatsinside original sound – Warped

Initial Rinse

The cycle starts with filling and rinsing. The dishwasher has several spigots that shoot water up. These spigots are on multiple arms that rotate to ensure that the water doesn’t miss any portion of the dishwasher. This initial rinse helps spray the dishes from multiple angles, ensuring no food gets left behind. The first rinse is similar to what you might do if you were handwashing. It scrapes off the large chunks of food and gives a quick first rinse so that the soap can reach down to the sauce and oils and break them down properly.

Soap Dispenser

Once the dishes are decently rinsed, the dishwasher dispenses the soap. Then, it continues to rinse with water, but with much more water and more intense water pressure. The footage looks similar to what you might see during a heavy rainstorm. As you watch the video, this is perhaps the most satisfying part: you can see the bulk of the mess come off the plates. Everything that the first rinse loosened but didn’t remove is fair game for the soap rinse.

Draining

The dishwasher drains a few times during the cycle. Doing this at multiple points instead of just at the end ensures that miscellaneous food bits and oils aren’t spread to other dishes. It also does a final drain at the end of the cycle. This way, you don’t flood your kitchen when you go to put the clean dishes away.

Final Takeaways

Watching footage of the inside of a dishwasher during its cycle also illuminates why there is a correct way to load the appliance. If you’ve packed your dishes too close together, the water can’t get to them, and food will stay caked on instead. So, if you’ve been noticing that your silverware is coming out dirty or your bowls still have residue on them, reconsider how you load them in and how tightly you cram dishes in.

Safest Space Heater Overall

Dreo Space Heater Solaris 718

Pros:

  • Powerful fan
  • Convenient cord management
  • Specific temperature control
  • Good value
  • Has a child lock

Cons:

  • Not as many features as Dyson

When it comes to the safest space heater, it doesn’t get much better than the Dreo Solaris 718. This tower heater comes in three colors and is loaded with safety features. A child lock, cool-touch housing, tip-over protection and overheat protection make it safe for use in a house with little ones. Plus it’s made of flame retardant materials. In addition to its many safety features, this space heater boasts a powerful fan and precise temperature control.

“The Dreo Solaris comes with not only five heat settings but also specific temperature control,” says associate product tester Dylan Fischer. “It’s very convenient for fine-tuning a specific heat level for your room.” And once it’s finished heating, you don’t have to worry about getting scalded if you accidentally bump into it. Dylan points out that while the heating grates themselves took a few minutes to completely cool off after operating in high-heat mode, most of the model was cool to the touch after heating.

Dreo Space Heater Solaris 718

While Dylan didn’t particularly care for the conical shape of this heater, he was impressed by its overall performance, noting that its fan was noticeably more powerful than its pricey competitors. “The fan is much more powerful, and I could actually feel the difference even in the far corners,” he explains. “During the high-mode test, there was a 10-degree difference by the end (in the center of the room).” And in spite of its power, this space heater is incredibly quiet. In fact, Dylan points out that it makes virtually no noise when on low.

Another callout feature is the unit’s convenient cord management system. “Always gotta call out nice cord management when we see it. Any unused cord can easily be wrapped around the bottom of the base,” raves Dylan.

Maytag Washer and Dryer Review: Made Like They Used to Be https://www.familyhandyman.com/article/maytag-washer-and-dryer-review/ Thu, 21 Nov 2024 02:21:55 +0000 Whether stacked or side-by-side, this Maytag washer and dryer combo offers great features and capacity.

The post Maytag Washer and Dryer Review: Made Like They Used to Be appeared first on Family Handyman.

]]>
They always say that appliances aren’t made like they used to be. I disagree, especially after testing the Maytag washer and dryer with a 16-hour fresh hold (they sure didn’t have that feature on a 1950’s washer/dryer set).

After testing this set for the past three months, I’ve seen how it performs with dark clothing, hairy pet beds, extra-large comforters, and smelly workout clothes. Here’s what you need to know.

What is the Maytag washer and dryer?

Maytag Front Load Washer with Extra Power and 16-Hr Fresh Hold

Maytag Front Load Electric Dryer with Extra Power and Quick Dry cycle

The Maytag Front Load Electric Washer with Extra Power and 16-Hr Fresh Hold and Front Load Electric Dryer with Extra Power and Quick Dry Cycle are complementary stackable models with large capacity, an Energy Star certification and a variety of settings and features. The washer can connect to Wi-Fi through a Maytag app.

The direct drive motor and stainless steel wash basket are covered by a 10-year limited parts warranty. Similarly, the dryer has a 10-year limited parts warranty on the drive motor and drum. Both the washer and dryer are available in three colors: volcano black, white and metallic slate.

Maytag Washer and Dryer Features

The front-load, 4.8-cubic foot capacity washing machine offers 14 cycles for your load of laundry. These include an assortment of settings, including specialty options for towels and bulky items. Use the ‘Quick Wash’ cycle for small-scale loads that are slightly dirty. Thanks to extra-high spin speeds, they will be clean in 15 minutes. Meanwhile, the ‘Sanitize’ cycle uses ultra-hot water temperatures to remove 99.9% of household bacteria.

Extra Cleaning Power at the Push of a Button

An ‘Extra Power’ button in the middle of the cycle display provides increased cleaning power. It boosts stain-fighting capability on any wash cycle with a unique dual-temperature wash. Press the ‘Wash Cycle’ Knob to activate the ‘Extra Power’ option, which activates a cold prewash cycle before the main cycle starts. When ‘Extra Power’ is started, the ‘Wash Cycle’ Knob will illuminate, and the run time remaining on the display will increase.

Unique Washer Options

With just a touch, you can activate additional wash options and features. These include:

  • A Fresh Hold setting keeps clothes from getting musty by periodically tumbling them while circulating air from an internal fan. Clothes will stay fresh for up to 16 hours after the original wash cycle ends.
  • A Steam option adds additional soak and wash time with a steam boost to many cycles, providing added cleaning power to remove tough stains. A built-in heater helps maintain perfect wash temperatures.

The Wi-Fi Connect option allows you to use the Maytag app to connect your washer to your home WiFi network. Features include remote start/stop from anywhere, cycle notifications and the ability to schedule wash cycles. There are also smart tips, a stain guide and more.

Sturdy and Built to Last

The 4.8-cubic foot capacity provides enough space to clean 30 towels at once. The direct-drive motor has the power to handle large loads, and the stainless steel basket is designed for many years of washes and built with rugged materials to last.

A Dozen Cycles

Maytag dryer control knob

The front loading 7.3-cubic foot capacity dryer has 12 cycles covering everything from delicates to bulky items. Like the washer, a sanitizing cycle uses extra-hot drying temperatures to remove up to 99.9% of common household bacteria. Theres also a steam refresh cycle that can spruce up your tired clothes without having to wash them. Meanwhile, the Quick Dry cycle allows you to dry a small load fast. When you combine it with the Quick Wash cycle on the washer, you are able to get some clothes ready to wear in quick order.

Get Extra Power to Dry Faster

The Extra Power option can be used with both Timed Dry and Sensor Cycles. Press the Cycle Control knob to activate the Extra Power option, which provides an additional 10 minutes of cycle time. When Extra Power is activated, the Cycle Control knob will illuminate, and the estimated time remaining on the display will show 10 additional minutes.

More Drying Options

The Wrinkle Prevent option is useful if you are not able to immediately remove a load. By touching the Wrinkle Prevent button, you get up to 150 minutes of periodic tumbling to help reduce wrinkling.

The Reduce Static option tells the dryer to automatically tumble, pause and introduce a small amount of moisture into the load to help reduce static and cut down on cling. This option adds approximately three minutes to the total cycle time.

The Steam option adds steam to the end of certain Sensor Cycles to help smooth wrinkles. It can be used with high or medium heat settings and adds approximately 15 minutes to the total cycle time.

Stackable

To accommodate tight spaces, a washer-dryer stacking kit can be used to place the dryer on top of the washing machine, freeing up extra room in your laundry area. To stack the machines, you need to purchase a stacking kit (approximately $50-60) that corresponds with your exact models. Whirlpool makes specific kits for its Maytag line of appliances.

The kit includes all the parts needed to safely support the washer and dryer, as well as detailed installation instructions. Maytag says installing the kit will require basic hand tools and novice repair experience, but having them installed by a professional might be worthwhile if you think youd be unable to lift the bulky dryer onto the washer.

How We Tested It

maytag front loading machine

I washed two small dog beds, which used to cause trouble in my old machine. The beds would never come out fully clean, and I would have to use an all-purpose cleaner to wipe out the washer and dryer afterward because they would be filled with dirt or fur. That was not the case this time. There wasnt a bunch of gook left in the washing machine., and I didnt have to use a lint roller to get the fur from our long-haired dog off.

When I put the dog beds in the dryer, I once again used the Bulky Items setting and let it rip. At the end of the cycle, the dog beds were dry and free of dirt and dog hair. Any stray dog hair landed in the lint collector, which was easy to remove. I was highly pleased that I did not have to clean out the inside of the washer or dryer, as Ive had to do with previous machines!

Cleaning a Comforter

I also wanted to wash a new king-sized comforter before using it because it was smelly. It fits with ease inside both the washing machine and dryer, and it couldnt have been easier. Previously, when I washed comforters or heavy blankets, the washing machine would tilt and stop working — requiring a reset. And with the dryer, multiple cycles were needed to get the comforters or blankets dry. This time, the comforter handled the wash cycle flawlessly. I think the lack of an agitator on the front loading machine allowed a better washing function.

Things did not get off-kilter, and the comforter came out fresh and clean. It took one cycle to dry it in the dryer, and it turned out perfectly warm and dry. I was so gleeful about it!

Washing Dark Clothing

For the next load, I washed a variety of dark clothing, including black leggings and black dress clothes. With our old machine, when I would wash dark clothes, they would come out covered in lint and/or dog hair. There was nothing that frustrated me more when that would happen. I cant tell you how many things were ruined. With the new machine, I set the clothes to the normal setting. At the end of the cycle, when I pulled everything out, I was so thrilled not to have anything stuck to my clothes. The washing machine delivered with flying colors.

Workout Gear

Next, I wanted to do a load of workout gear that had been sitting in the laundry basket all week. Everything was dirty and smelly when it went in, and it came out clean and fresh. The extra power buttons are fantastic: I honestly wasnt sure if they were necessary, but its a great feature. Be sure to add extra detergent to the extra power compartment.

Maytag Washer

Front-Loading Washer vs Top-Loading Washer

Lets talk about what its like to have a front-loading wash machine versus a top loader. Ourprevious washer was a traditional top-load machine with an extra-large capacity. The size was nice, and you could select a pre-soak button that would fill up the machine halfway and then let your stained clothes sit in the water and detergent to get some extra attention. But, as I mentioned earlier, our old machine would tend to freeze up with bulky loads. It would also make a lot of noise. And when the load was finished, I usually had to stand on my tip toes to get things out of the bottom of the drum.

With the front load machine, there is no pre-soak setting. I suppose you could stick everything in the bin, start a wash and hit pause to create the same effect. But maybe its not necessary with all of the great settings on this machine. Plus, Ive seen a number of comments from experts online that suggest your laundry will touch the laundry soap and water more often on a front-loading machine than it would on a top-loader that uses an agitator.

After using the front-loading washer for a while, I feel that its hard to tell when the machine is full. Maytag says the washer can handle 30 towels at once, but well before you get to that number, you start to feel like youre piling up pancakes on the breakfast plate and wonder if the syrup will make it to the bottom of the stack. But theyre right. Ive overstuffed the machine multiple times with two weeks of clothes, and everything is getting clean!

Pros

  • Stackable or side-by-side
  • Steam setting
  • Comes in multiple colors
  • Extra power feature gets clothing very clean
  • 16-hour fresh hold
  • 10-year warranty
  • Available in electric or gas

Cons

  • Hard to hear end-of-load alerts
  • Some buttons are similar or duplicative, which is confusing

FAQ

What is the advantage of leaving the door open on the washer when its not in use?

You need to leave the door open all of the time when not in use so it doesnt develop mold or mildew.

Can I do a full load on a quick wash and quick dry?

No. The settings are not meant for that. Quick Wash and Quick Dry should be used for small loads.

The dryer has both a ‘Regular’ and a ‘Normal’ setting. Whats the difference?

Though they sound similar, they are slightly different. The Regular setting lasts for 57 minutes on the second temperature setting out of four. The Normal setting uses hotter temperatures and lasts longer. It goes for 1:27 and uses the third temperature setting out of four.

Is Maytag made in China?

Though the various parts for the machines might be sourced from around the globe, these washers are assembled in Clyde, Ohio, and the dryers are assembled in Marion, Ohio.

Who owns Maytag now?

Maytag was a standalone company for more than 100 years before it was acquired by Whirlpool in 2006. In addition to washers and dryers, the Maytag brand makes refrigerators, dishwashers, ranges and microwave ovens. Other Whirlpool-owned brands include KitchenAid, JennAir and Amana.

What other reviewers/experts had to say

The dryer is as nice as the matching washer, said a verified Best Buy reviewer. It auto senses dampness and dries accordingly. It is also quiet, perhaps even more so than the washer.

Steam is nice, as is the wrinkle guard, said a verified Best Buy reviewer. The dryer seems to actively adjust the time remaining based on sensors and usually ends up drying faster than anticipated.

We have had this washing machine and the matching dryer, both on pedestals for the last month, said a Maytag reviewer. They are FANTASTIC.

Final Verdict

This Maytag washer/dryer combo delivers everything you would want for a large or small household. These machines can easily handle bigger jobs like comforters, dog beds and jumbo loads of towels. They can also pivot to smaller loads, delicates, or a quick wash of clothes if needed on short notice. This dynamic duo does an amazing job at everything I throw at them.

You will not be disappointed in the washing machine’s cleaning power or the dryer’s drying power. These good-looking machines are also stackable, so they can fit into a smaller space. I highly recommend them.

Where to Buy the Maytag Washer and Dryer

This Maytag washer and dryer set is available at Maytag, The Home Depot, and Best Buy. The washer is just under $900, and the dryer is around $800.

Over 26,000 Natural Gas and Carbon Monoxide Alarms Recalled https://www.familyhandyman.com/article/new-cosmos-usa-co-natural-gas-alarm-recall/ Tue, 19 Nov 2024 16:41:45 +0000 https://www.familyhandyman.com/?p=649314 Is your carbon monoxide alarm putting you at risk? Find out about an important recall and how to stay safe.

The post Over 26,000 Natural Gas and Carbon Monoxide Alarms Recalled appeared first on Family Handyman.

]]>
When it comes to protecting your family at home, a reliable carbon monoxide (CO) alarm is a must. After all, carbon monoxide is a silent, odorless gas that can be deadly, often striking when people are least aware. A functioning CO alarm in one’s home can be a lifesaving measure, but things can go wrong if these devices fail to perform as expected.

This is the case with a recent recall of tens of thousands of New Cosmos USA’s alarms. Heres everything you need to know about the recall, its implications, and what to do if you own one of the affected units.

What DeNova Alarms Are Being Recalled?

This recall involves DeNova Detect Brand Combination Natural Gas and Carbon Monoxide Alarms sold between December 2023 and July 2024. The specific model impacted is model number DD622NCV (the number can be found on the top of the alarm). In total, about 26,360 alarms are being recalled.

Why Are These DeNova Alarms Being Recalled?

The alarms in question pose a safety risk because they can go into sleep mode after alerting users to the presence of natural gas or carbon monoxide if the alert lasts less than four minutes. During this sleep period, the alarms will fail to detect and alert users to new instances of gas or CO, potentially leaving households vulnerable to the dangers of carbon monoxide poisoning.

Despite the serious potential danger, New Cosmos USA says no incidents or injuries have been reported so far.

What To Do If My DeNova Alarm Is Part of the Recall

If you own a recalled alarm, you need to act quickly to ensure your households safety. Begin by verifying if your alarm is part of the recall. Check the model and serial numbers; the affected units are model DD622NCV. If your alarm matches this description, visit the DeNova Detect safety notice page to register for a replacement.

Once registered, you will receive a prepaid shipping package and a replacement alarm. After installing the new unit, return the recalled alarm using the prepaid package.

Keep in mind: You should continue to use the recalled alarm until your replacement arrives, as it still offers some protection against natural gas and carbon monoxide.

If you have any questions regarding this recall, you can contact New Cosmos USA’s customer service by phone (888-447-6016) or by email (safety@DeNovaDetect.com).

Electrolux Washer and Dryer Review: I Can Confirm This Set Works as Great as It Looks https://www.familyhandyman.com/article/electrolux-washer-and-dryer-review/ Wed, 13 Nov 2024 17:27:06 +0000 In this Electrolux washer and dryer review, an editor details why the 600 Series set beats her previous machines.

Im one of those people who truly enjoys doing laundry. Think about it: You throw clothes into a machine, let it do its thing for under an hour, toss the clothes into another machine for under an hour and the end result is clean clothes. Its not like youre actually working for all that time, but the payoff is big. The only downside of my laundry game was that I had an older washer and dryer without too many features or special settings that made the chore even easier. That is, until I got the opportunity to test the Electrolux washer and dryer. And now, its nearly impossible to get me out of the laundry room with this reliable washing machine and dryer. Heres my Electrolux washer and dryer review.

What Is the Electrolux Washer and Dryer?

The Electrolux 600 Series washer and dryer set is made up of the Front-Load Perfect Steam Washer with LuxCare Plus Wash and SmartBoost and the Front-Load Perfect Steam Electric Dryer with Balanced Dry and Instant Refresh (available in gas and electric). Both machines have large drums, making them ideal for anyone who likes to wash their bedding regularly, as well as many cycles and settings to customize the washing and drying experiences.

These machines can be purchased separately or as a set, and you have the option of adding pedestals to your order. The benefit here is that the washer and dryer stand taller for easier use, and you get the added storage for detergent and whatnot without taking up extra room. Both of the machines are extremely quiet, so even though theyre not exactly compact, they could still be considered an apartment-friendly washer and dryer.

I Tried It

Electrolux 600 Series Washer and Dryer Set

With large drums and many cycles and settings, this set can transform your laundry game.

Electrolux Washer and Dryer Features

The Electrolux washer and dryer can be placed side by side or stacked on top of one another. Both machines are Energy Star-certified, meaning they meet strict energy efficiency standards set by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) . Each unit has a reversible door, and the washing machine has a front-load design as opposed to a top-load design.

Standard front-load washers are generally more expensive upfront compared to top-load washers, but they offer better energy efficiency than a standard top-loading washer, potentially leading to long-term savings on utility bills, says Glenn Lewis, president of Mr. Appliance, a Neighborly company.

Here are the features that make this Electrolux set super impressive.

  • Extra-large capacity: 8-cubic-foot drum

How We Tested It

From delivery to washing and drying clothes, I went through each stage with the Electrolux washer and dryer and have tested the set for two months so far.

Ordering and Delivery

Im not going to sugarcoat it: The whole delivery experience was a nightmare. I cant put that on Electrolux, though, because my set wasnt ordered through the brands website. Still, a damaged dryer, a million phone calls and just an enormous headache later made the ordering and delivery process super tough. I cant imagine that this happens with every washer and dryer delivery through this particular retailer, but I think its important to call out.

Once everything was finally sorted, delivered and installed, I couldnt have been happier with how the Electrolux washer and dryer looked in my basement. They are really beautiful appliances and look expensive. Honestly, theyre everything Ive wanted in a washing machine and dryer (because, you know, thats what your dreams become once you hit your 30s).

Washing

Electrolux Washer And Dryer Review washer

As someone who enjoys doing laundry so much, I couldnt wait to fill the stainless-steel drum. Im sure that I was supposed to read the manual, but I wanted to see how intuitive the control panel was the first time I used it.

I had zero issues switching between the cycle options, like Optic Whites, Heavy Duty and even Activewear, but I just went to Normal. Two months later, it’s still the one I use most often. From there, I chose my water temperature (cool), soil level (normal) and spin level (medium).

I placed my detergent pod into the designated slot (which is separate from liquid detergent, liquid bleach and fabric softener) and let the machine do its thing. The Electrolux washer made a clicking sound to indicate the door was locked and off it went.

Electrolux Washer And Dryer comforter in washer

The very first thing I noticed after the cycle was done in about an hour was that my clothes were spun really well. There wasnt a drop of water coming off my clothes. Thats when I realized that maybe my previous washer wasnt as great as I thought. It wasnt the most powerful at spinning at the end of the cycle, so my clothes took a solid 24 hours (and even longer for thicker pieces) to hang dry.

But with the Electrolux, I can hang up shirts, pajama pants and cardigans up at night, and by the afternoon the next day, theyre ready to put away. As the laundry doer of my home who hangs a lot of the clothing that comes through, I appreciate this to an unfathomable degree.

I havent had the chance to test out every setting on the Electrolux washer. Luckily, I havent had a clothing crisis that required that handy 15-Minute Fast Wash. But when I have a particular piece of clothing to wash, I know Ill have just the right setting to have it handled with care and keep it looking its best.

If Im going to nitpick this washing machine, its an issue that probably wont impact most people. At the beginning of the drum, theres a silicone piece that wraps around the opening. When I do my 2-year-olds laundry, her tiny socks tend to get stuck in there, so theyre pretty soaked when I have to dig them out. This is a very niche problem, of course, so Im happy thats the biggest of my worries.

Drying

Electrolux Washer And Dryer Review Dryer

The Electrolux dryer has a just-as-easy-to-use control panel as the washer. I dont find myself having to toy with the options very often, and I typically use the Normal setting with a temperature of and dry level of “normal” and the auto-dry time.

Depending on the cycle you turn the dial to, those other settings will automatically change to what it thinks is best, but you can still customize those options, too. Whether Im drying my husbands athletic shorts, our sheets or a pile of towels, Ive found the Normal setting to be sufficient. But there are plenty of options to choose from, including Delicates, Air Dry and Instant Refresh, which are gentler for fragile pieces.

Electrolux Washer And Dryer comforter on dryer

One of the best parts of both the washer and dryer are that the drums are huge, meaning that I can put my queen comforter in both with room to spare. With my previous dryer, I would often take the comforter out of the dryer to see that it got wrapped up into a ball and the inside was still wet. So, I would unravel it and run it through another dry cycle.

Thats not ideal on bedding laundry days, but with Electrolux dryer, theres 8.0 cubic feet for the comforter to bounce around and dry in every section. Plus, with the moisture sensor, the machine smartly estimates how long itll take for the load to dry (and Ive found it to be accurate).

Electrolux Washer And Dryer drums

I honestly cant think of a negative aspect of this dryer. It does its job, gives you customizable option so you dont sweat over your most special pieces and looks really nice even in the unfinished part of the basement.

Pros

  • Many wash and dry cycles and settings
  • Large drums
  • Quiet
  • Side-by-side or stackable setup
  • Sleek design
  • Available in titanium and white colors
  • Steam feature on both washer and dryer
  • Stainless-steel washer drum
  • Moisture sensor in dryer

Cons

  • Very small items could get caught in the front silicone part of the washer’s drum
  • Water gets into the detergent section and needs to be emptied

Why You Should Trust Me

Ive been an editor and writer since 2014 and working on commerce content since 2017, so Ive tested hundreds and hundreds of products over the years. That includes an outdoor gazebo, a garage storage system, a bed frame and moreand thats just for Family Handyman. So, Im used to taking my time with larger products and taking note of everything from delivery to setup to usage. For this Electrolux washer and dryer review, I put the machines to use almost daily for over two months before sharing my thoughts.

FAQ

What is the life expectancy of an Electrolux washer?

In general, both washers and dryers typically last around 10 to 14 years, depending on usage and maintenance, notes Lewis. To get the most life out of your machine, Lewis suggests doing a monthly cleaning of your washer and cleaning out the lint filter in your dryer in between loads. Also, a professional should help with lint buildup at least every year.

I cannot stress enough the importance of an annual maintenance check on your dryer and even your washer. Doing this service can help prevent your appliances from breaking down at the worst possible time when you need them, says Lewis.

Who makes Electrolux washer and dryers?

The Electrolux Group, with a headquarters in Sweden, owns Electrolux, as well as Frigidaire and AEG.

What Other Reviewers Had to Say

This Electrolux washer and dryer set is impressing laundry doers everywhere. Heres what they have to say in their Electrolux washer and dryer reviews:

I am 100% impressed with my new washer. Im very fussy with my laundry, and this machine is supreme! writes Shelley, a five-star Wayfair reviewer. I absolutely love my new dryer. Love all the features, the ease in using and the quiet sound.

Stef817, another five-star Wayfair reviewer, says, Im considered a crunchy mom, so I use all natural laundry detergent. I would have to use SO much for our clothes to smell clean. After getting this matching washer and dry set, Im using less soap AND our clothes feel, look and smell so much cleaner! We got the pedestals too and the storage is so great!!

We purchased this washer and the matching dryer about six weeks ago. These units replaced a washer/dryer pair from another company that we have relied on for years. After multiple breakdowns, we decided to research our options and decided to purchase these Electrolux units. There is no comparison with [these] units being easier to use, built much better and they look fantastic! shares Wayfair buyer, Markb.

Theres a lot to love about the Electrolux 600 Series washer and dryer set: the smart features, the efficient washing and drying, the sleek design, the optional pedestal storageI could go on and on. There wasnt anything wrong with my previous washer and dryer set, per se. But after testing the Electrolux washer and dryer, I see where my previous set lacked.

My clothes no longer take a whole lot of time to hang dry after being taken out of the washer. I no longer have to put my comforter through a second drying cycle. And now I have more features to play with than I know what to do with (but Im hoping that makes my laundry game that much better!). Overall, Im beyond thrilled with these machines and would recommend them to any friends and family members (yes, at full price).

As a childless cat (and dog) lady, one of my biggest pet peeves (pun intended) is piles of pet hair all over my clothes, blankets, sheets and furniture. I sometimes find myself tossing clean clothes in the wash again to get the pet hair off the clean laundry. At Family Handyman, we’ve tested some of the best washer-dryer sets on the market, including sets that focus on the unique challenges those of us with pets face daily. After looking through several Samsung washer and dryer reviews, I knew I needed to test the Samsung Pet Care Solution Washer and Dryer to see if it holds up in a house with multiple pets and if it makes laundry less hairy.

What is the Samsung Washer and Dryer?

The Pet Care Solution Washer and Dryer is Samsung’s answer to the issues pet parents have faced for years. It focuses on giving you clean laundry in any circumstance and removing excess hair and odors that tend to come with owning a pet. It’s a beautiful and sleek machine that looks nice in a laundry room but packs a punch by including integrated SmartThings technology for remote access, specialized wash and dry settings, the ability to steam clothing and more.

We Tried It

Samsung Smart Washer and Dryer with Pet Care

Samsung Washer and Dryer Features

Washer Features

The Samsung Pet Care Solution Washer and Dryer is extremely high-tech and has a long list of features for both the washer and the dryer. This washer is geared to remove pet hair and make your laundry experience faster and easier. It has an extra large 5.4-cubic-foot capacity with upgraded filters and water jets to ensure your clothes are extra clean.

The washer comes with the normal pre-programmed washing cycles but also has the ability for a Pet Care Wash Cycle to remove six times the amount of hair of a normal wash. Then there’s the Super Speed Wash Cycle, which can clean an eight-pound load in a lightning-fast 28-minute cycle.

You can connect the washer to the Samsung SmartThings app via WiFi to create your own laundry settings. This also allows you to stop or delay your laundry from the app. The app informs you of your energy usage and any issues your washer may be experiencing. It’s quiet and efficient thanks to the Vibration Reduction Technology+ and Swirl+ Tub Interior, which keeps noise and vibration low while washing. It still draws out water from your clothes despite its gentleness. To help with maintenance, this washer also has a self-clean feature to keep things sparkly, clean and fresh.

Samsung Washer And Dryer Features

Dryer Features

The dryer is equally impressive as the washer and has features that give you fluffy and wrinkle-free clothes with less pet hair. Its large 7.4-cubic-foot capacity can hold large loads and easily fits bulk items like blankets and bedding. It has a reversible door to fit any space, plus an internal drum light so you can better see your clothes. It also has accessibility features like braille and audio assistance.

Like the washer, the Pet Care dryer can also be connected via Wi-Fi to the Samsung SmartThings App to remotely start, stop, delay and troubleshoot issues you may encounter during the drying cycle. Additionally, this dryer has Samsung’s Steam Sanitize+ technology, which was tested* and found to remove 95% of pollen from fabric while relaxing wrinkles and refreshing clothes quickly and without the need for a full wash and dry.

*(Testing based on Samsung internal protocols, results provided to and interpreted by Intertek, individual results may vary)

How We Tested It

Samsung Washer and Dryer test

Over the course of two months, I tested this washer-dryer combo against pet hair, odor and stains, as well as food stains, gym clothes and other typical laundry messes. I also reviewed the app’s functionality and tested its different settings.

Testing the Washer

When testing a washer, the most important things are how well it washes and whether the extra features are worth the extra money. We did the unthinkable to test its branded pet care specificity and washing ability and washed the dog’s bed blanket. This blanket is COVERED in hair and lives in our dog’s “apartment,” or the space he likes to sleep in under the bed.

With previous washers, I would always take the blanket outside and try to shake off as much hair as possible, but I threw it straight in the washer this time and prayed to whatever higher power that the drain wouldn’t clog. To my surprise, it didn’t clog, and the blanket came out fresh. While there was still a little hair, it was much less than I had anticipated. When I opened the additional hair catchers inside the washer, I found lumps of dog hair and was both grossed out and impressed at how much it collected.

My favorite feature of this washing machine, apart from its ability to catch hair, is its quick washability. This wash cycle cuts a 56-minute wash down to 28 minutes and doesn’t sacrifice its cleaning power and ability. Its use of the spray jets and other technology saved me in a pinch when I got makeup on my shirt and had limited time to wash and dry it before I left.

Testing the Dryer

While the dryer’s features are a little less “fun” to test than the washer, they’re equally, if not more, important. This dryer dries fast and dries well. My partner and I frequently hang dry most of our clothes due to shrinking or damage from dryer heat, but I feel much more comfortable with the addition of the cooler dry cycles and the ability to choose a dampness setting over a time setting for your dry.

The steam cycle is great for items that are mostly clean but need to be freshened up. During our testing, my partner and I went on multiple trips, and instead of dumping my whole bag in the wash as I normally do, I put any clothes I didn’t wear through a steam cycle instead of a wash, and they came out smelling as clean as the ones put through the wash.

Additional Features

Samsung Washer And Dryer Additional Features

The app for this washer-dryer combo was truly what sold this pair for me. The SmartThings app can start, stop, and delay your laundry cycles, as well as send reminders about when your laundry is finished and if there are any issues with your wash.

As someone juggling too many things, throwing clothes in the washer and setting them to finish washing right before I get home or overnight while I’m sleeping is a game changer. The reminders to switch clothes have saved me time and multiple re-washes of clothes that were forgotten wet in the wash.

While I didn’t think I would have any issues while doing my laundry, the washer stopped the wash on my first use of the delicate cycle. It alerted me that the water was hot and may potentially damage the delicate handmade baby blanket I had just finished for a friend. It turns out the hot and cold water lines had been switched during installation, but thankfully, this washer was smarter than the person who installed it.

Pros

  • Long lasting
  • Efficient and eco friendly
  • Impressive smart features and innovative technology
  • Large-capacity loads
  • SmartThings App sends alerts and reminders
  • Removes dog hair and odor 6x better than most laundry units
  • Quick wash and steam clean settings

Cons

  • Clogged drain hose is common cause of drainage problems in top-loading washers
  • Problems may arise with ordering and delivery

FAQ

Samsung Washer And Dryer

What is the life expectancy of a Samsung washer and dryer?

A Samsung washer and dryer has a life expectancy of 10 to 15 years when well-maintained.

How can I use the Samsung SmartThings App to control a Samsung washer and dryer?

The Samsung SmartThings App can be used to control different functions of the Samsung Washer and Dryer. For both machines, you can pre-set custom wash and dry settings and start, stop or delay the start of a load. In addition, you can have the app send you notifications when your wash or dry has finished or if there are any issues with the cycle.

What Other Reviewers and Experts Had to Say

Overall, reviewers love this washer-dryer combo. Most point out their love of the extensive list of features ranging from smart connectivity to washing ability. Phillips, a customer of Lowes, commented, “If I had known that much pet hair was getting through both the washer and dryer, I would have purchased this a long time ago!”. Experts in the laundry field agree.

Salvador Villarreal, owner of VIP Cleaners and Laundry, highlighted that “the high-heat cycles, odor control features and pet hair filters of the Samsung Pet Care Solution set seem ideal for breaking down pet messes.” He also brought up that “Frequent cleaning of filters will likely be needed, but for specialized performance, the investment may be worth it.”

Samsung vs. LG

We consulted multiple experts on the most reliable washer-dryer brand, and LG came out on top by a mile. But does that mean it’s a better pick over Samsung washers/dryers? It depends.

Both brands offer innovative technology. Samsung’s SmartThings and LG’s ThinQ allow you to control your laundry remotely, monitor your energy usage, and customize your settings. Both also have multiple Energy Star-certified models, though LG seems to have more than Samsung.

Samsung appears to be the budget winner, as their washer/dryers are, on average, less expensive than LG’s. That said, apartment dwellers or those in compact spaces might want to opt for the LG WashTower or one of the company’s other space-saving options. On the other hand, Samsung appliances have deeper loading capacities, which makes them a better option for large families.

The two brands are comparable in terms of washing and drying settings. You will ultimately decide which Samsung or LG washer/dryer works best for you.

Final Verdict

Samsung Washer Dryer Final Verdict

Before giving my final verdict, I’d like to present you with a photo.

While you can’t smell how fresh these pants smelled after a steam cycle this morning, you also can’t see a ton of pet hair. This washer and dryer are beasts at hair removal, and they have been a lifesaver for a house with multiple pets that love to shed.

These smart laundry units have many features that provide a great wash and dry for any type of laundry, keep your clothes safe and make doing laundry easier. While the units are pricier than some standard units, the features are well worth the price.

Using this washer-dryer combo’s smart app integration has helped me lessen the number of loads I’ve left in the dryer, the quick load feature has saved an outfit or two due to a makeup mishap, and the steam sanitize feature has been wonderful to use during the switching of the seasons to freshen up the clothes in the back of my closet instead of washing them as I have in the past. Overall, I’m a huge fan of this set, and I look forward to many more loads of laundry and purchasing a lot fewer lint rollers.

Here’s What Each Dishwasher Compartment Is Actually For https://www.familyhandyman.com/article/dishwasher-compartments/ Tue, 12 Nov 2024 18:53:30 +0000 Whether you're learning how to do dishes, or you've gotten a new dishwasher and are puzzled by a mystery compartment, we've got you covered.

The post Here’s What Each Dishwasher Compartment Is Actually For appeared first on Family Handyman.

]]>
One of the most well loved kitchen appliances is the dishwasher. It makes clean up a breeze, and frees you up to handle any other kitchen cleaning tasks while it runs in the background. But have you really studied your dishwasher? Have you read the manual? And do you feel confident that you know what each dishwasher compartment is for? If you don’t know how to operate it, you won’t get dishes that are quite as clean as you’d like.

Your dishwasher door should have a hatch on it with several compartments. This hatch is the detergent dispenser. Here’s a rundown of what each compartment is for.

Dishwasher Main Compartment

Dishwasher Gettyimages 183880141 Jmedit

The compartment within the detergent dispenser that you’re probably most familiar with is the main compartment. This is the largest compartment, where you can load your pods or liquid detergent before running the cleaning cycle.

You must fill this compartment each time you run a load. If you use dishwasher pods, then the amount of detergent you’re using is pre-measured. If you prefer liquid detergent, check both your dishwasher manual and the instructions on your detergent of choice to confirm that you’re using the correct amount for each load.

Pre-Rinse Compartment

Dishwasher Gettyimages 1213640767 Jmedit

The pre-rinse compartment is the narrow compartment next to the main compartment. It’s designed to hold extra detergent if you feel that you’re running a particularly heavy load and want to ensure your dishes come out sparkling. This detergent gets dispensed in the beginning of the cycle, before the main compartment detergent is dispensed to prep your dishes.

Just like the main compartment, you need to fill this every time you run a load of dishes. It’s generally only wide enough for liquid detergent, not pods. So if you are a dedicated pod user but don’t want to run a load twice when it’s extra dirty, consider keeping a small bottle of liquid detergent on hand for those rare but heavy loads.

Rinse Aid Compartment

Dishwasher Gettyimages 1414236922 Jmedit

Finally, your detergent dispenser has a rinse aid compartment. Despite the similarity in their names, the pre-rinse and rinse aid compartments do very different jobs. Unlike the pre-rinse compartment, the rinse aid compartment does not hold detergent. Rather, it holds rinse aid, which helps the dishes dry much faster and with far fewer spots.

Also unlike the previous two compartments, the rinse aid compartment does not need to be filled up each load. Simply fill the compartment and it will automatically dispense a little of the rinse aid at a time. Keep an eye on it and top it up when it gets low.

You Should Never Do THIS With Your Dishwasher Pods https://www.familyhandyman.com/article/where-to-put-dishwasher-pods/ Fri, 08 Nov 2024 19:37:38 +0000 https://www.familyhandyman.com/?p=647253 TikTok users love sharing cleaning hacks, but not all of the advice is good. Recently, they've been divided over where to put dishwasher pods.

The post You Should Never Do THIS With Your Dishwasher Pods appeared first on Family Handyman.

]]>
CleanTok, the TikTok community, is focused on sharing cleaning tips and tricks, and it always has something new up its sleeve. Some of the advice is good, like teaching people how to make simple homemade cleaners. But other advice is dangerous, like encouraging people to mix ammonia-based cleaners with other products including bleach. So whenever there’s a new trend, it’s worth investigating it carefully. This time, CleanTokers are suggesting a new way to use your dishwasher pods.

What’s the Hack?

The latest CleanTok hack has to do with where you put your dishwasher pods. According to many users, it’s more efficient to toss the pods in the bottom of the dishwasher or in the silverware portion instead of the detergent dispenser.

Their reasoning is that residue from the pods can damage the dispenser. They also fear that the residue will build up and stay on your dishes or cause clogs in the plumbing. By keeping the pods in the center, these TikTokers argue, the pods will dissolve better, and the risk of a clog will be much lower.

Where Is the Best Place for Dishwasher Pods

Individual machines may vary, so it’s always best to double-check your dishwasher’s manual to confirm its instructions about where to put dishwasher pods. But as a general rule, the pods will work best when they’re put in the detergent dispenser. Familiarize yourself with your machine and it’s manual. Unless your machine has a dedicated pod slot, use the detergent dispenser.

Maytag’sinstruction manual explainsthat the pods have a coating that dissolves when it comes into contact with water. By putting them in the detergent dispenser, you can ensure that the pods dissolve at the right point in the dishwasher cycle for maximum efficiency.

The manual even directly addresses some of the TikTokers’ concerns, saying, “Although some believe that throwing a pod in the dishwasher protects your dispenser, pods are designed to dissolve when they touch water and may not work if not properly dispersed via the dispenser.”

We can’t stop you from trying the hack out for yourself. But dishwasher manufacturers, who are the experts on this subject, say that you’ll be making your pods less effective, and your dishes won’t come out as clean as they would if you used the pods correctly.

Easier Tape Wrangling

Tired of trying to find the end (the start) of the tape roll every time you use it? You can fold the end over, but then you have to cut off a chunk each time. Here’s a better solution: Stick a paper clip to the end of the roll right after you tear off a piece. It makes finding the tape end a lot easier, and you don’t waste any tape. This works great with any kind of tape, but it’s really helpful with duct, masking and packing tape.

We Tried the Shark StainStriker, and The Results Were Shocking https://www.familyhandyman.com/article/shark-stainstriker-review/ Wed, 16 Oct 2024 23:56:28 +0000 https://www.familyhandyman.com/?p=639959 We tried the viral Shark StainStriker to see how it really performs on tough stains. Here’s what happened.

The post We Tried the Shark StainStriker, and The Results Were Shocking appeared first on Family Handyman.

]]>
Say what you will, but carpet flooring has perksespecially if youre a small child or pet. It provides a soft cushion to what would otherwise be hard flooring. However, carpet (mainly white or light-hued) can be challenging to maintain without a proper carpet cleaner. While the best carpet cleaners are good, sometimes a portable spot cleaner for carpet and upholstery gets the job done better (and more efficiently).

When I first saw the Shark StainStriker advertised, I knew I had to try it. Its a super-compact, lightweight carpet and upholstery cleaner that tackles spills and messes anywhere in the home. As someone who has paid hundreds to professionally clean their carpets, I was excited to see how the StainStriker would perform. Heres how testing the portable cleaning machine went.

What is the Shark StainStriker?

The Shark StainStriker is a portable carpet and upholstery cleaning machine that spot-treats and removes stains. It uses a dual-activated solution to treat multiple surfaces throughout your home, including carpets, rugs, upholstery, furniture and more.

The compact cleaning machine weighs less than 10 pounds, so it’s easy to carry to any part of the home. The dual-activated cleaning solution uses OXY to clean tough stains like embedded dirt, pet messes and food stains. No premix or pre-treatment is required either. The StainStriker offers instant stain elimination.

I Tried It

  • Cleans pet messes more thoroughly than by hand
  • Helps to reduce odor from messes
  • Easy to use

  • Machine is easy to clean, but should be cleaned after each use
  • One-button operation

  • Noisy
  • May not work on all stains, especially if theyre old and set in

Shark StainStriker Product Features

Dual-Action Cleaning Solution and Powerful Suction

Shark Stainstriker Dual action cleaning solution

Sharks dual-activated cleaning solution is contained in separate tanks on the machine and comes together for stain-busting action in the cleaning handleno premix or pretreatment necessary. The handheld cleaning tool also features powerful suction to lift liquid, dirt and debris during cleaning. The StainStriker works on tough odors and stains from pets and even smokers.

Easy Cleaning and Storage

Shark Stainstriker easy cleaning

Weighing just 8.51 pounds, the StainStriker is easily portable. You can take it upstairs or downstairs, wherever you need to clean. Plus, you can tuck it away out of sight when not in use, and it doesnt take up much space. Its less than a foot wide, less than 3 inches long and 15 inches tall. The hose length is just over four feet, and the power cord is 12 feet long, so you should have no problem reaching from outlet to mess in an average-size room!

Shark Stainstriker cleaning after use

Whats In the Box

The StainStriker comes with 12 ounces of OXY Multiplier Formula and six ounces of CarpetXpert Deep Clean Pro solutionthe two cleaning liquids that combine to clean stains and spills. These are both mini sizes of the cleaning liquids, and Shark sells 32-ounce versions of the CarpetXpert and OXY Multiplier for $16 and $14, respectively.

Shark Stainstriker cleaning solutions

Youll also get the 3.5-inch reversible bristle tool, the pet mess tool, an integrated crevice tool for hard-to-reach places and an instruction booklet.

Shipping and Returns

Shark offers free shipping on orders of $99 or more, so the StainStriker should ship for free. Theres also a 60-day money-back guarantee.

How We Tested It

I put the StainStriker through a series of tests using real-life, set-in stains and fabricated stains (stains I created solely to test the machines cleaning power). I was surprised by the results.

After unboxing the StainStriker, I examined all the parts to be sure attachments and cleaning agents were included per the product description. While removing the packaging, I noticed that the exterior of the dirty water tank (made of hard plastic) was scratched. It wasnt cracked or broken, and the scratches didnt affect the machines operation.

Id describe the scratches as cosmetic flaws, but the cleaning machine was very well packaged in the box, so Im unsure when the damage occurred. My guess is that the damage was a manufacturing default, not a shipping issue. Overall, the scratches were more of an annoyance than anything.

Shark Stainstriker filling with stain striker

Next, I filled the StainStriker Tank with OXY Multiplier. I filled the CarpetXpert Tank with water and the CarpetXpert Deep Clean Pro solution. Once the machine was full, I walked it into the dining room, where there was a set-in wine stain that had been there for years, and plugged the machine in.

(Even full of water and cleaning solution, the StainStriker was easy for me to carry from room to room.) I was hopeful as I pressed the on/off button and got ready to attack the stain. I sprayed the stain using the button on the handle first, then scrubbed repeatedly, trying to remove the stain. I did that a few times and waited.

Unfortunately, the stain did not budge. In fairness, it is the mother stain of all stains. I had my carpets professionally cleaned recently, and the expert carpet cleaner couldnt get the stain to lift either. So, I went into the living room, over to a brown stain (on white carpet) next to the mantel.

The stain was either a result of spilled coffee or a pet accident and was disclosed to us by the prior homeowners, who had tried to remove it with no luck. The professionals couldnt remove itwith their industrial carpet cleanerseither. This time, I wasnt so hopeful. Still, I set the StainStriker next to the stain, plugged it in, and went to work. What happened next was magic.

Before and After of carpet stain

The light brown stain (which was only noticeable in certain lighting, probably due to years of attempted removals) started to lift! I was shocked. I walked over to the fireplace multiple times throughout the day to ensure my eyes werent playing tricks on me. The stain was gone.

Shark Stainstriker cleaning stains

After that, I tried the StainStriker on upholstery. I had a sample of couch fabric handy from a recent furniture purchase that was perfect for the job. (Note: The fabric is light tan and prone to staining.) On one side, I rubbed in used coffee grounds and on the other, I smeared ketchup. Then, I let each stain sit for about four hours. After that, it was time to clean. I couldnt quite remove either stain entirely. I may have rubbed in each side a little too eagerly after my luck in the living room.

Shark Stainstriker fabric stains

The StainStriker quickly pulled the coffee grounds and ketchup away from the fabric, but unfortunately, there were still shadows of the stains left on the fabric after it had dried from the cleaning. A few factors were working against the StainStriker. First off, how often will you violently rub in a stain when you make a mess in real life? Probably not often–or ever. You’re better off getting the StainStriker on a stain before its pressed into carpet or upholstery fibers. Additionally, darker and performance fabrics are easier to treat and clean.

Shark Stainstriker Crevice tool

Despite a few letdowns, I was still impressed with the StainStriker overall for several reasons. 1) Its easy to move, operate and clean. 2) Every stain is different, and the StainStriker was able to lift a stain that even professional carpet cleaners couldnt. 3) The cleaning solution smells excellent. While the StainStriker didnt fully lift the stains I created to test it, it removed the odor and left the fabric smelling fresh. 4) The StainStriker is affordable compared to other small, commercial-grade fabric and carpet cleaners.

Shark Stainstriker in use

The StainStriker is great if you frequently clean small spills and accidents, especially from pets. It even has a Pet Mess Tool, which I found as effective as the main cleaning head. The Pet Mess Tool isolates the dirty water from the machine for easy cleaning and zero cross-contamination.

Shark Stainstriker filling water

My only qualm with the StainStriker is that its intended for spot cleaning, but theres only one fill line for the water tank (which takes water and CarpetXpert), so you have to fill it fully every time you use it. Additionally, you shouldnt leave unused cleaning solutions in either tank for more than 5-7 days, so some cleaning solutions will inevitably be wasted. That was a bummer, especially since the machine only comes with two small bottles of cleaning solution.

FAQ

Shark Stainstriker Dirty Water Tank

Can you leave water in Shark StainStriker?

According to Shark customer support, you leave clean water in the StainStriker for a short period, of five to seven days. For long-term storage (weeks), they recommend storing unused cleaning solutions in the tank off the unit to prevent clogging or build-up in the machine. However, unused CarpetXpert solution (the solution thats diluted with water) should be discarded after short-term use.

The dirty water tank should be emptied and cleaned after each use to prevent odors, mildew, mold and bacteria.

Does the Shark StainStriker use steam?

No. It does not use steam; it uses water, suction, and two cleaning solutions.

What Other Reviewers Had to Say

The Shark StainStriker has a 4.5-star rating on Amazon with more than 3,000 customer reviews. The consensus among customers is that the machine is lightweight, easy to operate and works well on carpet and upholstery. Many buyers say theyve had success removing stubborn stains, too. Additionally, several people like the clean smell the cleaning solution leaves behind and appreciate the impressive suction power.

Verified purchaser Mal says, I bought this to treat some old stains when it was on sale, and shortly thereafter had a pet that got VERY sick and managed to do significant damage on the rugs, couches and chairs in my home (including vomit, urine, feces, you name it). It has been worth its weight in gold and made the horrible experience somewhat manageable. Seriously, the house is even cleaner than it was before.

I’m a Shark devotee for life now, Mal adds. Blew my old Bissel out of the water. Love that it has a handle for easy carry, long cord for mobility, and you can leave the solution in the unit between uses. Also super easy to clean out the dirty water bin and cleaning heads. The suction is great. I wish the hose was a tad longer (have to move it around a bit) but can deal with that.

Honestly if you are on the fence and have a pet or kids, just buy it for the peace of mind, they say.

Shark StainStriker vs. Bissell Little Green HydroSteam

The Shark StainStriker is comparable to the Bissell Little Green HydroStem, which we tested for our guide, Best Carpet Cleaners for Pet Stains. However, when comparing the two products, the StainStriker is more compact and simpler to use (with a single-button on/off switch) than the HydroSteam. The HydroSteam also has a steam cleaning setting, which the StainStriker does not have, plus quieter operation.

Both carpet cleaning machines have easily removable dirty water tanks that can be dumped and cleaned thoroughly in the sink. Additionally, the StainStriker has a hose-cleaning tool and a pet-cleaning tool that keeps pet messes far away from the machine, and the HydroSteam does not have either. The StainStriker takes two cleaning solutions, while the HydroSteam only takes one, and the StainStriker has a wider cleaning brush head but a smaller dirty water tank.

Lastly, perhaps most importantly, the StainStriker retails for $90 less than the HydroSteam.

Final Verdict

At such a reasonable price point, I think the Shark StainStriker is a great tool to have in your arsenal of cleaning products. Of course, the machines effectiveness will depend on several variables: the fabric or carpet youre cleaning, the stain (red and oil-based stains are often more challenging to treat, for instance), and how long the stain has been left to sit.

However, the StainStriker is affordable, easy to operate, portable and effective on many stainsincluding old stains that professional carpet cleaners couldnt even get to budge! For that reason, Id recommend it to anyone who needs to stain-treat fabrics and carpets frequently (aka, people with pets and children).

Where to Buy the StainStriker

You can buy the StainStriker directly from Shark, at Walmart and on Amazon. The retail price is $140, but the machine is often marked down.

crank. As the crank was turned, the clothes were pulled through the water. Their models have certainly come a long way in their nearly 120 years of business. Today, Maytag is known for producing durable yet affordable machines.

Whirlpool, on the other hand, was founded in 1911 and focused on electric washers. Their electric wringer-washer evolved over time and the brand now offers a wide range of appliances including refrigerators, cooktops, dishwashers and more. Whirlpool washers are generally easy to use and come with a plethora of additional features and options for different types of loads.

The Whirlpool Corporation purchased Maytag in 2006. However, the two brands continue to operate as independent appliance manufacturers and there are several differences between them.

All About Maytag Washers

Maytag Washer

According to Dennis G., Lead Appliance Expert at Comfort Appliance Repair in Tennessee, Maytag washers are built tough. “They are known for their durability and can handle heavy-duty loads, which is great if you’re running large loads on a regular basis,” he says.

Senior shopping editor Caroline Lubinsky tested the Maytag Front Load Washer with Extra Power and 12-Hr Fresh Spin option. This washer, which has a capacity of 4.5 cubic feet, is actually smaller than Lubinsky’s old washing machine. Admittedly, she was skeptical of a smaller machine at first. However, she was delighted to find that it was still able to meet her needs. “I’m able to wash my king-sized comforter easily, which is all that I was concerned about fitting,” she explains.

In addition to handling large loads of clothes and bedding, Lubinsky appreciates how well this machine actually cleans her laundry. “I have three dogs and pet hair was a real issue with the old set,” she says. “This washing machine seems to get most of the embedded dog hairs on clothing and bedding.”

According to Lubinsky, the average load takes around an hour to complete, but can change depending on which of the 10 wash cycles you select. It also has an auto-hold feature, which Lubinsky finds especially helpful. This feature allows your clothes to stay fresh even if you forget to put them immediately in the dryer. “I constantly forget to throw things in the dryer after washing them and frequently have to rewash them. Now, I don’t have to do that,” she says.

All About Whirlpool Washers

Whirlpool Washer

According to Dennis, Whirlpool washers are more versatile than Maytag washers thanks to their advanced features. “Whirlpool focuses on making your laundry process smoother with smart features and more energy-efficient cycles,” he explains.

Associate product tester Sheri Kaz replaced her old Kenmore washer with the Whirlpool Top Load Washer with 2 in 1 Removable Agitator. After a year of use, Kaz has found plenty to love about her Whirlpool washer but the removable agitator is number one. “The thing that I appreciate the most is how gentle it is on my clothes when I take the agitator out,” she says.

Kaz also loves this washer’s large capacity. At 5.3 cubic feet, it holds twice as much as her old washer. That said, Kaz often finds that retrieving her items from this top loader’s deep drum isn’t the most convenient thing. “I curse the machine every time I have to stand on my tippy toes or grab a stool to fish my socks out of the super deep drum,” she says.

On laundry days, Kaz prefers the machine’s deep fill water option to the standard setting. “I feel that it needs more water in the tub to really clean and rinse the clothes properly,” she explains. “Also, rather than using the auto detergent dispense function, I tend to like using powder detergent in a cardboard box rather than liquid in a plastic bottle. As a result, I dissolve the detergent in hot water, then pour it into the machine.”

If you prefer liquid detergent, you’re in luck. According to Kaz, using the liquid detergent with the auto dispense function cleans very well. However, this function isn’t perfect. “The downside is that when using this function, the rinse water doesn’t run clear – it’s always very soapy,” says Kaz. “Therefore, I prefer using two rinses when using the auto dispense mode. Either way I’m using more water.”

FAQ

Do Maytag washers last long?

According to Dennis, a Maytag washer will last you around 10 to 12 years with proper care and maintenance. “Simple maintenance like cleaning the filters and avoiding overloading can help extend its life,” he explains.

Is a Maytag washer better than a Whirlpool?

When it comes to Maytag vs Whirlpool, Dennis says that one isn’t necessarily better than the other. Rather, it depends on your needs. If you often have heavy-duty loads then Dennis recommends a Maytag washer. But if you want more control over settings and efficiency, Whirlpool might be the better fit.

What is the difference between Whirlpool and Maytag?

As Dennis pointed out above, Maytag washers are built tough. “These washers are perfect for heavy loads and long-term use. If you’re looking for something that can take a beating, Maytag is great,” he explains.

Whirlpool, on the other hand, are more versatile with their advanced features. “Whirlpool focuses on making your laundry process smoother with smart features and more energy-efficient cycles,” says Dennis.

Should your machine ever go on the fritz, you can rest assured knowing that whichever brand you buy can likely be repaired. According to Dennis, Maytag and Whirlpool machines share some parts so its not hard to find technicians who can work on both brands. “Whirlpool parts might be a little easier to find just because its a more common brand, but both Whirlpool and Maytag are pretty well-supported in the U.S. for parts and repairs,” he explains.

The Maytag vs Whirlpool Bottom Line

You cant go wrong with either a Maytag or Whirlpool washer. Both brands offer durable, dependable machines that will keep your clothes clean and fresh. Of the models we tested, we found the Maytag front load washer and Whirlpool top load washer to be the most similar in terms of price point, size and features. Each model also has a coordinating dryer in case you’re looking for a complete washer and dryer set. If you’re frequently washing heavily soiled clothing, bedding or doing laundry for a large family, stick with a Maytag. But if you prefer the convenience of smart features and want a more energy-efficient washer, then go for a Whirlpool.

Where to Buy Maytag Washers

Maytag washers can be purchased directly from the manufacturer or at a variety of retailers. In addition to your local appliance store, The Home Depot, Lowe’s and Best Buy all carry Maytag washing machines.

Where to Buy Whirlpool Washers

You can purchase a Whirlpool washer directly from Whirlpool or at a number of retailers. You are likely to find Whirlpool washers at your local appliance store as well as big box retailers like The Home Depot, Lowe’s and Best Buy.

This time, they set out to find the best mini fridge with freezer and there was one clear winner: the Insignia Mini Fridge with Freezer.

The Insignia mini fridge with freezer impressed our testers with its consistent performance, storage capabilities, sleek, modern design and affordability. And while it’s not a full-size refrigerator that can hold a week’s worth of groceries, it’s a great backup to have on hand for that extra gallon of milk or ice cream.

It’s also the perfect addition to any dorm room, office or bedroom as it’s small and quiet enough to keep your favorite snacks and drinks close by without causing a disturbance. Here’s everything you need to know before adding this fridge to your cart.

What is the Insignia Mini Fridge with Top Freezer?

The Insignia Mini Fridge is a mini fridge with a top door freezer and a total capacity of 3.0 cubic feet. It has one power cord that measures 64.5 inches long, and it’s Energy Star certified.

The main compartment of the fridge has interior lighting, two shelves, a crisper drawer, a can storage system and door shelving. Insignia Mini Fridge Features

Stainless Steel Finish

The Insignia mini fridge with freezer has a black body with black trim and stainless steel doors. According to our testers, it has subtle stripes that add some interesting texture when looking at the fridge from afar and is seemingly fingerprint-resistant.

Mechanical Thermostat

This fridge has an adjustable mechanical thermostat that ranges from 0 to 7, with 0 being the warmest setting and 7 being the coldest. The freezer has no controls.

Internal Storage

The refrigerator has two shelves, a crisper drawer, and integrated door storage. It also has built-in can storage for six cans. The freezer, which has a capacity of 0.9 cubit feet, has one door shelf.

How We Tested It

In the testing lab, product testing manager Annamarie Higley found that some adjustments were needed before she could get things moving. This ones legs were really wonky and off-kilter upon arrival, so I had to mess with the levels for a while, she explains. But once she got the adjustable front feet just right, the fridge was ready for testing.

Over the course of four weeks, Higley ran the Insignia mini fridge with freezer for 500 hours to assess how well it maintained the proper temperature and humidity levels. Per the manual’s instructions, Higley set the thermostat to the middle setting for the duration of our tests.

In order to determine the average temperature of this appliance, Higley placed three thermometers insideone in the freezer, one in the crisper drawer and one in the main compartment of the fridge.

She recorded the temperature in the morning and again late afternoon, once a week for the entirety of August. She also placed a humidity gauge in the main compartment and checked it along with the temperature. Higley notes that the recommended temperature range for food safety is between 34-40 degrees Fahrenheit and humidity levels should hover around 65%.

When testing was complete, Higley found that this refrigerator averaged 41 degrees Fahrenheit on the middle thermometer setting, which is one degree higher than the recommended temperature. The freezer averaged 6 degrees Fahrenheit, which is slightly higher than the recommended 0 degrees Fahrenheit. Finally, the humidity level averaged 79% which, as Higley points out, is quite high.

Insignia Mini Fridge With Top Freezer

In addition to carefully monitoring temperature and humidity levels, Higley performed a fit test. She gathered an assortment of common refrigerator and freezer items, including a gallon of milk, a 2-liter bottle of soda, a carton of eggs, a gallon of ice cream and a standard-size frozen pizza and checked to see how well each item fit inside this mini fridge with freezer.

Higley was impressed when she discovered that all of the items fit inside the fridge and freezer, although she did have to remove the top shelf in the fridge in order to fit the gallon of milk.

She also appreciated that her 2-liter bottle of soda fit in the door. “The only thing is that it extends into a section for other food storage. For example, if you were attempting to store butter there, the top of the soda bottle would jut into the bottom of the butter box so it wasn’t resting stably,” explains Higley.

Overall, Higley thought so highly of the Insignia mini fridge with freezer that she dubbed it the best overall model. It fits a variety of common refrigerator and freezer items, has smart can storage and features an ergonomic and attractively modern design. Its also reasonably priced and a breeze to set up and move as needed.

If you’re shopping for a new refrigerator, consider a mini fridge. These small appliances are ideal for keeping things within arm’s reach in offices, dorms or bedrooms. They’re also perfect for homes that don’t have the space for a full-size garage refrigerator. The best mini fridges will keep your favorite drinks, snacks and mealtime essentials cold and cost just a fraction of a full-size refrigerator.

Our team tested nine different mini fridges with freezers in order to see which ones are worth your hard-earned money. We looked for consistent temperatures and humidity levels, capacity and smart storage solutions among other things. One model stood out for its nondescript profile, consistent fridge temps and ability to fit all of our test items: the Danby Mini Fridge . Here’s everything you need to know before adding this fridge to your cart.

What is the Danby Mini Fridge?

The Danby Mini Fridge is a mini fridge with a top door freezer and a total capacity of 3.1 cubic feet. Both doors are reversible and have concealed handles that extend the width of the top of the fridge door and the bottom of the freezer door. It has one power cord that measures 62 inches long, and it’s Energy Star certified.

The main compartment of the fridge has interior lighting, one full-width removable glass shelf, a crisper drawer, a can storage system and adjustable door shelving. It also has a temperature dial ranging from 0 to 7. The freezer compartment has a door rack and one adjustable wire freezer shelf.

The Danby mini fridge with freezer measures 18.69 inches wide, 20.19 inches deep and 33.69 inches tall. It weighs 47.4 pounds and comes in a white or stainless steel finish.

The Danby mini fridge with freezer fit all of our test items, including a gallon of milk, and had very consistent fridge temps.

Danby Mini Fridge Features

Two Finish Options

The Danby mini fridge with freezer is available in white or stainless steel. We chose the white model, which our testers described as a 90s throwback thanks to its white door, white trim and white body. The stainless steel model costs $10 more than the white option.

Mechanical Thermostat

This fridge has an adjustable mechanical thermostat that ranges from 0 to 7, with 0 being the warmest setting and 7 being the coldest. The freezer has no controls.

Internal Storage

The refrigerator has one removable glass shelf, a crisper drawer and integrated door storage. On the door is a CanStor beverage dispensing system that holds up to six cans. The freezer, which has a capacity of 0.87 cubit feet, has one full-width adjustable wire freezer shelf.

How We Tested It

Product testing manager Annamarie Higleyran theDanby mini fridge with freezerfor 500 hours in the testing lab to assess how well it maintained the proper temperature and humidity levels. Higley set the thermostat to 4, which is the middle setting recommended by the manual.

In order to determine the average temperature of this appliance, Higley placed three thermometers insideone in the freezer, one in the crisper drawer, and one in the main compartment of the fridge. She recorded the temperature in the morning and again late afternoon, once a week for the entirety of August. She also placed a humidity gauge in the main compartment and checked it along with the temperature. Higley notes that the recommended temperature range for food safety is between 34 and 40 degrees Fahrenheit, and humidity levels should hover around 65%.

The Danby Mini Fridge Works Like A Charm In Any Space

Over the course of the month, this refrigerator averaged 36 degrees Fahrenheit. According to Higley, the temperatures were very consistent and only went above the recommended fridge temperature (by a hair) one time. The freezer averaged 4 degrees Fahrenheit, which is slightly higher than the recommended 0 degrees Fahrenheit, and the humidity levels averaged 67%. While the freezer and humidity averages weren’t far off from the recommended numbers, Higley points out that they were somewhat volatile. One day in particular showed a 17-degree difference between the morning and afternoon temperatures. Others had 10-degree differences and one day had a six-degree difference.

In addition to carefully monitoring temperature and humidity levels, Higley performed a fit test. She gathered an assortment of common refrigerator and freezer items, including a gallon of milk, a 2-liter bottle of soda, a carton of eggs, a gallon of ice cream and a standard-size frozen pizza. She checked to see how well each item fit inside this mini fridge with freezer. This is one of the few mini fridges she tested that was able to fit the gallon of milk along with the soda, eggs and ice cream. The pizza fit in the freezer, though it took some effort. “The pizza barely fits lying down. The door catches on it a bit but does close all the way when pressed firmly,” explains Higley.

The Danby Mini Fridge Works Like A Charm In Any Space

What Higley doesn’t love about the Danby mini fridge is its CanStore system. Although it holds up to six cans, she found that it was just barely wide enough to fit them.

“They need to be inserted at the just-right angle to make their way to the bottom where the actual dispenser is. They also need to essentially be dropped into place, which I don’t love,” explains Higley. “It makes me feel like they’re going to explode.” Additionally, she points out that the whole stack of cans needs to be pushed upward in order to snake the can that’s being dispensed out of opening in the bottom of the rack. “It’s not super easy to use,” she concludes.

All in all, Higley recommends the Danby mini fridge with freezer. “This fridge is squat, lighter weight and discreet, with a solid warranty. Plus, it performs. It’s the perfect unit to tuck into the corner of a dorm or bedroom,” she raves. And while it’s not the cheapest mini fridge we tested, its warranty, which provides 18 months of parts and labor coverage with in-home service, makes it a good value.

Pros

  • Consistent fridge temperatures
  • Compact and lightweight
  • Fit all of our test items
  • Minimal assembly required
  • Available in two finishes
  • Generous warranty

Cons

  • Somewhat volatile freezer temps and humidity levels
  • CanStor system is finicky

In order to test the temperature, Higley placed three thermometers insideone in the freezer, one in the crisper drawer, and one in the main compartment of the fridge. She proceeded to record the temperature in the morning and again late afternoon, once a week for the entirety of August. She also placed a humidity gauge in the main compartment and checked it along with the temperature. The recommended temperature range for food safety is between 34-40 degrees Fahrenheit.

Over the course of the month, this refrigerator averaged 40 degrees Fahrenheit. According to Higley, the temperatures were very consistent and only fluctuated two degrees the entire time. The freezer, on the other hand, averaged 18 degrees Fahrenheit. “I considered target freezer temperatures to be around 0 degrees Fahrenheit,” she explains. “This freezer is generally warmer than you’d want.” She also notes that the humidity levels were quite consistent and averaged 74%. She had no trouble fitting the soda, eggs, ice cream and pizza. However, she was unable to fit the gallon of milk.

Higley also liked the can storage on the door, pointing out that while it only held four cans, it worked better than other models. “The cans are easy both to insert and remove,” she says. “Though I don’t love that you have to drop them in there. It feels like a foamy explosion waiting to happen.”

Overall, Higley feels that the Whirlpool mini fridge with freezer is a great value. “This is one of the least expensive units on our list, but it’s one of the most elevated-looking,” she raves.

However, Insignia’s fridge had an average temperature of 41 degrees Fahrenheit, which is just above the recommended temperature range for food safety. Additionally, the Insignia includes an ice cube tray and ice shovel, whereas the Whirlpool does not come with any accessories.

Final Verdict

The Whirlpool Mini Fridge with Freezer is a great option for those looking to add a refrigerator to their home office, bedroom, dorm room or any other small space. It maintains consistent fridge temperatures and humidity levels, has plenty of storage space and looks great in any space. And at just over $200, it’s a great value.

Even if you already have a full-size refrigerator, adding a mini fridge to your bedroom or office can be a total game-changer.

With a mini fridge just an arm’s length away, you won’t have to run out to your garage fridge every time you want a drink or worry about your coworkers nabbing your lunch from the communal office refrigerator. And, of course, a mini fridge is a must for college students living in a dorm. Our expert product testers put severalmini-fridges with freezers to the test. There’s one model in particular that we absolutely love: the Frigidaire 2-Door Retro Fridge.

At first glance, this retro-style mini fridge with freezer is so cute that we were ready to add it to our cart, with no questions asked. But since we’re all about making smart purchases, we brought it into our testing lab for closer inspection to assess whether or not it’s worth your hard-earned money. Once our testing was complete, we compiled all of our findings into a detailed Frigidaire Retro Mini Fridge review. Here’s everything you need to know.

What is the Frigidaire Retro Mini Fridge?

The Frigidaire Retro Mini Fridge is a 3.2-cubic-foot, two-door mini refrigerator with a freezer. It measures 37 inches tall by 21.5 inches wide by 19 inches deep, and it weighs 41.89 pounds. The power cord is 71.5 inches long.

The exterior of the fridge, which is available in four colors, boasts a retro design complete with chrome accents. It has a built-in bottle opener, and both doors are reversible, so you can use it in just about any space. The outside of the fridge is also magnetic, meaning you can jazz it up even more with your favorite magnets.

The interior of the refrigerator contains two removable glass shelves, a crisper drawer, a can rack and two door shelves. There’s also a dial that allows you to adjust the temperature from 0 to 7. The freezer has one main compartment and a door shelf. And, it comes with an ice cube tray that makes 12 ice cubes: four rectangular, four heart-shaped, and four spherical.

This stylish refrigerator is equipped with a separate freezer and comes with fun extras like a built-in bottle opener and heart-shaped ice cube tray.

How We Tested it

Product testing manager Annamarie Higley took this Frigidaire mini fridge into the Testing Lab with the Product Testing Team for a closer look. While she was smitten with the bright Coca-Cola red body and chrome accents, she acknowledges that it may not be for everyone.

“The retro-style fridges are garnering a lot of attention by other office workers,” she says. “Although it likely wouldn’t be everyone’s taste, at least it has some flair and personality compared to the modern-looking ones.” She also described the ice cube tray as super cute and awarded points for playfulness.

Frigidaire Retro Mini Fridge inside

Since this mini fridge has a bottle opener and actual handles (as opposed to divots underneath the door like on the other models we tested), it required some assembling. Our team noted that the bottle opener was super easy to install. They described it as substantial and sturdy, too. A labeled sticker on the side of the fridge told them exactly where to place it, and they used the included hardware to do so.

The door handles, on the other hand, weren’t as straightforward. Though the handles were supposed to simply slide into place via pre-installed brackets (no tools required), our team thought the plastic felt very cheap.

“I was timid with the pieces so as not to break them,” says Higley. “However, a lot of maneuvering and coaxing is required to actually click them into place. I was super nervous the whole time that the tiny plastic mechanism was going to snap. I ultimately figured it out, but this step requires both force and finesse. Careful!”

Additionally, the team suggests checking the brackets themselves before installing the handles.

“The bracket onto which the handle was installed wasn’t screwed into place super tightly by the manufacturer, so the whole handle mechanism wiggles up and down,” explains Higley. “Now that the handle has been clicked into place, I’m not sure it’s possible to tighten the screw because it’s not very accessible.”

With the installation complete, it was time to get down to the nitty-gritty of what this mini fridge was really made of. To start, our team collected an array of common refrigerator and freezer staples. The items included a gallon of milk, a carton of eggs, a 2-liter bottle of soda, a gallon of ice cream and a standard-size frozen pizza. Then, they attempted to stock the fridge and see what they were able to fit. The team was immediately impressed by the can storage in this fridge.

Frigidaire Retro Mini Fridge bottle opener

“This has superior can storage compared to all the others. The designated racks, shaped themselves like cans, make for easy grabbing and storage that ensures cans are secure and not shaken up,” raves Higley.

They were also delighted to find that they were able to fit all of their items in the appliance. However, they did have to make some adjustments in order to fit everything. They had to remove the top shelf of the fridge in order to fit the gallon of milk, and the 2-liter bottle of soda had to be laid on its side in the interior of the fridge.

“It doesn’t fit in the door, despite claims in the manual that the door holds 2-liter sodas,” says Higley.

Next was to assess how well this appliance maintained the appropriate temperatures. To do this, our testers placed three thermometers inside: one in the freezer, one in the crisper drawer, and one in the main compartment of the fridge. They recorded the temperature of each thermometer in the morning and again in the late afternoon once a week for the entirety of August.

They also placed a humidity gauge in the main compartment and checked them along with the thermometers. According to our testers, the recommended temperature range for food safety is between 34 to 40 degrees Fahrenheit, and humidity levels should hover around 65%. Freezer temperatures should be at or below 0 degrees Fahrenheit.

At the end of the month, our team found that the Frigidaire Retro Mini Fridge had an average refrigerator temperature of 39 degrees Fahrenheit and an average freezer temperature of 5 degrees Fahrenheit.

“The fridge never jumped above 40 degrees Fahrenheit and the temperature stayed within a three-degree range,” says Higley.

Frigidaire Retro Mini Fridge ice tray

Moreover, the average humidity level was 63%. Overall, our testers were thoroughly impressed by the stellar performance of this stylish little fridge.

“Between the heart-shaped ice cube tray, the bottle opener and the catchy color, this fridge is so fun. It caught the eye of countless co-workers as I tested in the office. But it’s hard at work while it adds a punch to your space, too. The fridge and freezer temperatures were spot-on, and the storage systems are smart,” concludes Higley.

Pros:

  • Maintains consistent fridge and freezer temperatures
  • Humidity levels stay within the recommended range
  • Smart storage systems
  • Stylish design
  • Includes an ice cube tray and built-in bottle opener
  • Offered in several colors
  • Reversible doors
  • Removable shelves

Cons:

  • Door handle brackets feel cheaply made
  • A 2-liter bottle of soda doesn’t fit on the door

FAQ

How long does a Frigidaire mini fridge last?

Generally speaking, mini refrigerators have a shorter lifespan than full-size refrigerators. That said, a well-maintained Frigidaire mini fridge should last for many years. Be sure to carefully read the manufacturer’s warranty for your mini fridge.

Why is my Frigidaire mini fridge not cooling?

If your Frigidaire retro mini fridge isn’t cooling, there could be a few issues at play:

  • The condenser coils located in the back of your fridge could be dirty or covered in frost.
  • A defective door gasket, which is the seal around your refrigerator door, could also be the culprit.
  • The condenser fan, which helps the condenser coils stay cool and function properly, may need to be replaced.
  • Your refrigerator’s thermostat may be broken.
  • The fridge could have a defective start relay. A start relay is what helps the compressor operate correctly. If this is broken or defective, your mini fridge cannot cool down to the correct temperature.

Can I leave my Frigidaire mini fridge on all the time?

Yes. These refrigerators are designed to run continuously. Our Frigidaire retro mini fridge ran for 500 hours in our testing lab.

Best Overall Mini Fridge With Freezer

Insignia 3.0 Cu. Ft. Mini Fridge with Top Freezer

Pros:

  • Energy Star certified
  • Smart can storage
  • Ergonomic handles
  • Minimal setup required
  • Ice cube tray included
  • Fit all of our test items
  • Affordable price point

Cons:

  • High humidity levels and fridge temperatures
  • Only one color offered

The Insignia Mini Fridge with Top Freezer earned the top spot on our list for its storage capabilities, ergonomic handles and sleek design. Our testers appreciated the fact that it’s one of the most affordable options on our list.

This fridge arrived in a box securely packed with foam, tape and stickers that were easily removed by our testers during setup. Our team found the instruction manual to be quite thorough, noting that it included detailed instructions on how to reverse the fridge and freezer doors. They opted not to reverse the doors and instead just allowed the refrigerator to sit for a few days before plugging it in. The only hitch came when our testers noticed that the legs had to be adjusted. “This one’s legs were really wonky and off-kilter upon arrival, so I had to mess with the levels for a while,” explains Higley.

The overall design also impressed our team.

“I think this is the most attractive of the stainless steel options by far. It’s seemingly fingerprint-resistant, meaning it will stay nicer-looking longer, and it has subtle stripes that add some interesting texture when looking at the fridge from afar,” raves Higley. “It looks sleek and elevated.”

Additionally, they loved the concealed door handles. In fact, our testers loved everything about the doors on this fridge. They found that the seals disengage easily, and the doors move and swing effortlessly.

Insignia mini fridge storage compartment

Inside the refrigerator’s main compartment, you’ll find a crisper drawer, two tempered glass removable shelves and a can rack. The freezer, which has its own separate door, includes a wire shelf in the main compartment, a shelf on the door and an ice cube tray. Our team was delighted to find that all of the items fit inside the fridge and freezer, although they did have to remove the top shelf in order to fit the gallon of milk.

Over the course of four weeks, our team found that the temperatures remained fairly consistent. However, the refrigerator temperature averaged 41 degrees Fahrenheit, which is one degree over the recommended range of 34-40 degrees Fahrenheit for food safety. The freezer averaged 6 degrees Fahrenheit. Another thing to consider is the humidity in this mini fridge with a freezer. According to our testers, humidity levels should hover around 65%. This refrigerator averaged 79%, which is quite high.

Overall, the Insignia Mini Fridge with Top Freezer is a solid choice. It holds a variety of common refrigerator and freezer items, has smart can storage and features an ergonomic and attractively modern design. It’s also reasonably priced and a breeze to set up and move as needed.

Smeg Refrigerator Review: Is This Vintage-Inspired Appliance More Than Just a Pretty Face? https://www.familyhandyman.com/article/smeg-refrigerator-review/ Mon, 23 Sep 2024 18:10:35 +0000 https://www.familyhandyman.com/?p=634569 Is a Smeg refrigerator the coolest (hehe, get it?) choice for you? Find out what I really think after two months of testing.

The post Smeg Refrigerator Review: Is This Vintage-Inspired Appliance More Than Just a Pretty Face? appeared first on Family Handyman.

]]>
You’ve heard it before: They just don’t make things like they used to.

The 1950s and 60s certainly weren’t perfect decades, but one good thing about those years were their well-made appliances. Not only were the appliances of the ’50s built with quality and durability in mind, but they were often outfitted in various pastel shades (think pistachio green or a paler version of Pepto-Bismol) and featured classic (now-)retro designs.

Although you probably could procure an archaic pastel fridge from yesteryear, you might be better off choosing a modern option with better energy efficiency (but the same retro feel) from Smeg.

Naturally, when I had a chance to try the Smeg refrigerator (the Retro Fab 28 if we’re feeling technical), I jumped at the chance. After testing it for a full two months in my home, I have the verdict on whether or not you should invest in a Smeg fridge of your own.

What is a Smeg Fab 28 Fridge?

Although the brand Smeg was founded in 1948, the Fab line of fridges was not introduced to the public until 1997 (great year to be born; I would know). Smeg’s design team called on inspiration from the appliances of the 1950s when creating this would-be style icon. You’ll recognize a Fab fridge from its notable rectangular shape, glossy finish and stand-out handle. The aluminum handle is sturdy and made of the same material as the ‘Smeg’ lettering on the fridge.

The brand offers various sizes, configurations, and colors of Fab fridges. Opt for a mini fridge (the Fab 10) if you’re looking for game room beverage storage, or choose the big Kahuna (the Fab 50) for ample fridge and freezer space. Smeg also offers the Fab 32 (a tall, skinny fridge/freezer combo), the Fab 38 (a slightly taller and larger fridge/freezer combo), the Fab 5 (an extra small mini fridge), and of course, the Fab 28 (which is the option I selected).

Smeg Fridge Features

The Smeg Fab 28 has a variety of notable features, including:

  • Multi-flow cooling system
  • Electronic temperature control
  • 0C compartment
  • Anti-ice back panel
  • LED lights
  • Various food and drink storage

How We Tested It

I chose to order my Smeg fridge from Williams-Sonoma, although they’re not the only retailer that carries the Fab 28. Just as an FYI, this fridge is not currently available at more traditional appliance retailers like Lowe’s or The Home Depot. With this in mind, don’t expect whoever you order your Smeg from to take your old fridge during the delivery process. I ended up listing my old fridge on Facebook Marketplace, which might be your best bet if your old fridge still works.

Delivery

Smeg Fab 28 Fridge under the kitchen cabinet.

Now, back to my experience. After selecting my perfect Fab 28 fridge (left hinge, pastel blue, of course), I checked out. Williams-Sonoma offers free white glove delivery, which was a relief to me because I live on the second floor in a walk-up building.

After about a month of waiting, the new fridge arrived at my door. But that wasn’t without the help of two delivery men (who told me they almost never deliver fridges) who had to haul this 165-pound appliance up a set of carpeted stairs and successfully not hit the precariously hung light fixture that the HOA refuses to switch out.

The Fab 28 easily slid into the spot underneath my cabinet where my previous Samsung fridge had sat, albeit it juts out a few inches further than its predecessor and is a few inches shorter. It also has adjustable feet (as most fridges have), so you can make your Fab 28 level.

Assembly and Set Up

Man can be seen setting up the Smeg Fab 28 Fridge

After successfully plugging in my fridge, I got to work unwrapping each carefully packaged shelf and bin, which were conveniently stored inside the appliance. The Fab 28 comes with a variety of glass shelves (three adjustable, one fixed) inside and multiple bins in the door for additional storage. There’s also a produce and dairy box in this fridge.

The assembly process (if you can even call it that) took all of 5 minutes after I unwrapped everything. You just have to slide the shelves and bins into their rightful spots.

To get the fridge cold, I simply turned the dial located inside the fridge to a number between one and five, with five being the coldest. By the next morning, everything in the fridge was perfectly chilled, and the small freezer had frozen my ice roller (as it should).

Using the Fridge

Interior of Smeg Fab 28 Fridge

I loaded up my new Smeg Fab 28 fridge with all the beverages (I’m a beverage goblin) and snacks. Everything was going swimmingly until I tried to put my Brita water pitcher inside the fridge. Even after messing with the adjustable shelves, I found that the pitcher was still too tall to slide in properly.

However, I did maneuver it into a strange sideways position, and the door closed, so I called that a win. But be warned: taller bottles and pitchers may not fit in the Fab 28, which is a bit of a bummer. Luckily, almost all the wine bottles I tried to shove in the Fab 28 fit into one of the door’s bins (minus one very lengthy Sav Blanc from my wine of the month club).

The Fab 28 is on the smaller side, so I’d recommend it for folks who live alone or with a partner. If you have a large family or multiple people in one home, you might do better with the Smeg Fab 50 fridge, which is quite a bit larger.

Although the Fab 28 does have a little freezer space, it does not make ice. This isn’t a problem for me, as I already own a nugget ice maker, but it might be for others who count on their freezer to spit out ice. Additionally, there is no water dispenser on this fridge, which, again, is no issue for me because I didn’t have one on my last fridge.

Energy Efficiency

One of the main concerns for appliances these days is energy efficiency. If you have energy-efficient appliances, you use less energy (sorry, was that obvious?), which will result in a lower energy bill. And unless you’re Elon Musk, you probably care about saving a buck or two where you can.

Luckily, the Fab 28 is considered energy efficient and has a previous rating of A+++, which is now a D (of the same level as before; they just changed the classifications). According to the Smeg website, the Fab 28 will use “230 KWh per year” of energy. For context, the average fridge uses between “300-800 KWh of energy per year,” per BKV Energy.

Pros

  • Retro aesthetic
  • Available in 15 colorways
  • Right and left hinge options
  • Becomes cold quickly upon setup
  • Ideal for smaller spaces/kitchens
  • Made in Italy
  • Glass shelves are adjustable
  • LED lights are illuminating
  • Energy efficient

Cons

  • Expensive
  • Freezer doesn’t always latch the first time you close it
  • Some Brita pitchers don’t fit inside
  • Small freezer space

Why You Should Trust Us

I’m the Senior Shopping Editor for Family Handyman, and I’ve spent the last four years testing and reviewing interesting products for readers. I know how to evaluate a product holistically to determine who it might be a good fit for (and who might do better with something else). And this Smeg fridge is no different.

I tested this fridge for almost two months before giving it my seal of approval. Examining everything from delivery to energy efficiency (and everything in between) was a critical step in my evaluation process.

FAQ

Hand can be seen opening the Smeg Fab 28 Fridge

What is the energy rating of Smeg Fab 28?

The Smeg Fab 28 previously had an energy rating of A+++, which has now been changed to a D rating. Not to worry; this is simply a reclassification and doesn’t mean the Smeg fridge has decreased in energy efficiency. The Fab 28 still only uses around 230 KWh of energy per year.

What Other Reviewers and Experts Had to Say

Curious what other Smeg Fab 28 owners had to say? Check out a few other reviews below.

“This fridge is exactly what I was hoping for,” reviewer Krista raves in their five-star review. “Good size without being too big or too small. I purchased [it as] a beer fridge and [for] occasional overflow from the main fridge. So far, its awesome.”

“The cream Smeg fridge is worth every penny,” a reviewer on AO.com explains. “Extremely high quality finish with excellent storage options. Very easy to set up and useful adjustable feet for slightly uneven flooring. The two drawers for storing meat and larger one for vegetables is superbly designed for optimum use of the space. The fridge is very quiet with a useful warning beep if the fridge is left open for too long. The shelves and boxes feel sturdy and strong. Having had a Smeg fridge previously for over 20 years the new updated design does not disappoint and surpasses expectation.”

Smeg Fridge vs Samsung Fridge

Luckily for you, dear reader (I think I’ve been watching too much Bridgerton lately), I’ve owned both a Samsung fridge and a Smeg fridge and can confidently tell you the difference between them. More specifically, I’ll be comparing the Smeg Fab 28 and the Samsung top freezer/refrigerator combo, as they are the ones I have experience with (and the ones that are around the same size).

The Smeg Fab 28 fridge is definitely the pricier of the two, retailing for around $2,500. By contrast, the comparable Samsung option costs under $850. If you’re someone who is obsessed with a more retro look and doesn’t mind shelling out the cash for aesthetic purposes, then choosing the Smeg Fab 28 makes sense. But if you like a stainless steel finish plus a larger freezer space and don’t want to spend $2,500, go for the Samsung.

Energy efficiency is also a consideration. The Smeg Fab 28 uses only around 230 kWh annually, and the Samsung uses 345 kWh per year. Both are energy-efficient options, but the Smeg uses slightly less energy.

Where to Buy the Smeg Fridge

LG WashTower Review: We Tried It, Here’s Everything You Need to Know https://www.familyhandyman.com/article/lg-washtower-review/ Wed, 18 Sep 2024 20:02:13 +0000 We tried one of the most popular stacked washer-dryers, the LG WashTower. Here’s how it went, from installation to months of use.

The post LG WashTower Review: We Tried It, Here’s Everything You Need to Know appeared first on Family Handyman.

]]>
As someone who has been wanting a new stackable washer-dryer combo for a while, I was pumped when I was asked to review the LG WashTower. Ive had my eye on the best washer-dryer sets for years, watching different lists come out with their top contenders. I noticed that the LG WashTower frequently lands as a top option on lists from multiple sources, and LG is often cited as one of the most reliable washer-dryer brands.

Why a stackable washer-dryer? Stackables make shopping for washers and dryers easier, as you only have to buy one machine. Additionally, stacked washer-dryers fit into smaller spaces easier. If your laundry room or nook is small but you want to include shelving and drawers, a stackable washer-dryer can help you achieve the laundry setup of your dreams by saving you valuable floor space.

Furthermore, the stackable LG WashTower has a single control panel thats easy to access and operateno complicated cycle selections. You can even select and start your cycles remotely from the LG app. Whats not to love about that?

When asked to write this review, I immediately ordered the LG WashTower. Ive been curious about the washer-dryer since the day it came out, and I didnt waste any more time before trying it for myself. After using the LG WashTower multiple times daily for months, here are my honest thoughts about it.

What is the LG WashTower?

Fhma24 Lg Washtower Mary Henn 02 Ssedit

The LG WashTower is a large-capacity, stackable washer-dryer machine. It has an LED touchscreen display that allows you to start and stop cycles instantly without bulky knobs or buttons. You can also switch to remote control from the control panel to select, start and stop cycles from your phone in the LG ThinQ app.

The remote feature must first be activated from the control panel for safety reasons. Still, you can select and schedule cycles from your phone to send to the machine without activating the remote function first. Then, when you are near the machine, you can start the sent cycle with one touch. Additionally, you can schedule cycles to start at a delayed time to prevent wet clothes from sitting in the washing machine too longa great feature if you know youll be gone for a few hours but want freshly washed clothes when you get home.

The LG WashTower has an ultra-large capacity washer (4.5 cubic feet) and dryer (7.4 cubic feet), so you can wash and dry large loads and bedding. Theres also no agitator in the washing machine, so quilts, delicates and other washables wont get caught up or snagged. The tower measures 27 inches wide, almost 75 inches tall and nearly 31 inches deep. It needs to sit about four inches from the wall for hosing and cords to have room, and when the doors are wide open, the depth goes from about 31 to 55 inches.

Thats not all: The LG WashTower has several other impressive features, like AI technology and advanced cycle settings. See all the deets about its features below.

I Tried It

LG WashTower Electric Stacked Laundry Center

Pros:

  • Sleek piece of machinery with thick, tempered glass doors and LED control panel with touch buttons
  • Smart capabilities like remote start via the ThinQ app
  • Impressive cleaning performance and NeverRust stainless steel drum
  • 4-tray dispenser in washer
  • Washer (4.5 cu. ft.) and dryer (7.4 cu. ft.) large enough for most families
  • Steam settings on both washer and dryer
  • Energy efficient with energy monitoring
  • Multiple color options: black steel, candy apple red, nature green and white

Cons:

  • Drying sensor frequently ends cycles prematurely when clothes are still damp
  • Pre-set cycle settings cant be adjusted within the app

LG WashTower Product Features

Ultra-Large Capacity

As mentioned, the washer and dryer both have large-load capacities. I can fit almost anything in the 7.4-cubic-foot dryerbedding, beach towels, washable rugs and more. While the washer is a bit smaller, its still large (4.5 cubic feet). I can fit comforters easily in the washer because theres no agitator to maneuver around. Ive even washed small rugs like the washable runner I keep in my kitchen, with zero issues. I love that the stackable washer and dryer are space-saving without sacrificing room the size of the tub or drum.

Built-In AI Technology and Smart Control

Built-in intelligence selects your clothes’ optimal wash and dry settings by sensing the load size, materials and dirt level. The WashTower will adjust cycle settings based on individual loads, and smart pairing lets you sync the dryer cycle with the washer settings. In any other mode than timed drying, the dryer will shut off when it senses clothes are dry.

Lg Washtower Review We Tried It Here Everything You Need To Know Ft Ssedit

The LG ThinQ app offers loads of (pun intended) additional smart features like energy monitoring, tub cleaning recommendations, smart diagnoses, routine scheduling and a recording of recently used cycles. There are also a ton of cycle settings in the app that wouldnt fit on the control panel, so you dont have to guess which settings are best for beachwear or sweat stains.

Advanced Wash and Dry Settings

The control panel on the front of the washer and dryer has six standard settings for each machine. The buttons on the front of the washer and dryer let you choose from normal, heavy-duty, speed wash, bedding, delicates and downloaded (from the app) cycles. You can select the water temperature, spin speed and soil level on the washer’s control panel. Plus, there are additional buttons for steam cleaning, adding an extra rinse or pre-wash, plus turbo wash or tub cleaning. You can select the temperature, desired dryness and dry time on the dryer’s control panel. The control panel has additional buttons for steam cleaning, static reduction, wrinkle care and energy-saving mode.

Led Touch Buttons on LG WashTower

Of course, those buttons dont include additional settings in the app. More advanced settings for the washer include:

  • An Allergiene cycle to help reduce certain allergens on clothes
  • Hand-wash settings for woolen items
  • Overnight wash, which utilizes a rolling motion to minimize noise and prevent wrinkles,
  • A sweat stains cycle for removing stains and odors

The number of auto-cycle options in the app impressed me. Plus, app’s dryer cycle settings include special options for denim, deodorization, bacteria removal, easy ironing (which leaves clothes slightly damp), air drying, static reduction and much more.

Steam Settings

Steam settings are sought-after features, especially for new parents or those with jobs that leave their clothes extra dirty. The steam kit for the LG WashTower enables SteamFresh cleaning in the washer and TurboSteam in the dryer. In the washer, it helps sanitize clothes and fabrics, and in the dryer, it helps to de-wrinkle clothing quickly without needing to iron.

I’ve enjoyed the SteamFresh feature for sanitizing machine-washable baby fabrics and the TurboSteam feature for knocking wrinkles out of clothing. Truthfully, the dryer alone does a sufficient job of getting wrinkles out, but the TurboSteam seems to give it an added boost.

Premium Looks

The LG WashTower looks excellent in person, with its real tempered glass doors and ultra-shiny finish. I opted for the incredibly sleek black steel color, but you can also choose white, hunter green or red. Additionally, LG offers a larger WashTower with a 5-cubic-foot tub capacity. Its available in white, black steel and a lighter gray steel color.

The drum and tub lights are nice, too. They illuminate the machine for added visibility when doing nighttime laundry, and they look elegant, too.

How We Tested It

We purchased the LG WashTower from Best Buy, which offered delivery and installation for an additional $160. The installation service ensured that the WashTower had all the required parts: A vent kit, power cord, hosing and steam dryer kit. However, there were some hiccups with delivery.

Though the delivery was on time and speedy fast, it wasnt flawless. While the delivery team unpacked and wheeled the unit into my laundry area, they could not complete the hookup because there was rust on my water hookups. They told me that completing the hookup with evidence of prior leakage was a liability risk, which I understood. So, I had to hook up the unit myself.

On the other hand, a couple of other issues werent as reasonable. Firstly, the delivery team dented the top of the unit during delivery by running it into the front door. They attempted to smooth it out by pounding their fists into the top, which worked surprisingly well but didnt completely fix the imperfection. Secondly, they did not include the steam kit that enables steam settings in both the washer and dryer, which cost extra. So, I couldnt use the steam function initially.

Disclaimer: Individual delivery experiences probably vary from store to store and even from one delivery team to the next. Your delivery experience with Best Buy might be flawless, but it might not be, so 1) look to make sure all the parts and services youve paid for are included and 2) speak up if the delivery team damages your machine. (I didnt because, ultimately, I decided the minor imperfection at the top of the unit was barely noticeable and not worth going through the effort of replacing the whole machineplus, I had dirty baby onesies waiting for me.)

I did call about getting the steam dryer installation kit, which Best Buy refused to send out without replacing the entire unit. So, I purchased that separately (again). To avoid this, ensure all parts are included during delivery!

For an additional $60, you can request that the delivery team haul away or move your old washer and dryer to another room. I removed my old stackable unit alone and did not use this service, but if you plan on keeping your old unit(s) for a second laundry station, utilizing this service may be helpful.

Fhma24 Lg Washtower Mary Henn 05 Ssedit

Apart from delivery, testing of the washer and dryer went well. I love the large capacities of the tub and drum, the convenience of the remote control setting and the endless cycle options for all my washing and drying needs. It seems like the washer gets my clothes noticeably cleaner than my previous washing machine (granted, my former washer was pretty old and had no advanced cycle settings). I also love that the dryer is suitable for all types of fabrics with its delicate, air-dry and high-heat functions.

My issues with the LG WashTowerthats why youre here, right?include a few minor drawbacks. The primary drawback I found was with the washers drying sensor. The dryer doesnt dry clothes all the way on most dry settings when the sensor is enabled. Most pre-set drying cycles leave my laundry slightly damp. The workaround is easy, however. I use the timed dry function when I want my clothes dry (I mean hot, crispy dry).

Additionally, Im not in love with the LG ThinQ app. The remote start function for the WashTower is great, and I like that it sends notifications when your laundry is finished. While there are many pre-set cycles within the app, the settings (water temperature, spin speed, soil level, etc.) cant be individually adjusted with those cycles. I also cant seem to enable steam cleaning and drying, prewash, cold wash and turbo wash from the app.

4 Tray Dispenser on LG WashTower

Lastlyand the following flaws are even more minor issues, in my opinionthe lighting on the control panel isnt super precise, so its sometimes difficult to tell which buttons are lit up. On one occasion, I noticed the dryer seal leaking (I cant say what happened there, but water droplets were leaking out at the bottom of the dryer door). Also, hair frequently gets stuck around the lint trap in the dryernot in the trap, as you might expect, but around itand is difficult to remove because it gets wrapped around the metal parts of the dryer.

FAQ

What is the advantage of the LG WashTower?

The LG WashTower offers many perks. It has a smaller footprint, fast and efficient washing and drying cycles, and smart capabilities that let you turn your machine on and off remotely.

Can I wash a king-size comforter in the LG WashTower?

Yes. I wash my king-size comforter in the LG WashTower. Of course, it depends on how big and thick your bedding is, but generally, four cubic feet can accommodate a king-size comforter or quilt, and the washer on this tower is 4.5 cubic feet.

What Other Reviewers Say

Almost all the negative reviews I encountered called out issues with LGs customer service. Many negative reviews cite long wait times, and some reviewers even say customer support was nonexistent when problems arose. While I had some significant issues with Best Buys customer service team, I have not had to use LGs customer support in the months that Ive owned the WashTower. So, I cant speak directly to the quality of LGs customer support quality. However, LG frequently suggests that customers send private messages via social media to get support.

LG WashTower vs. Individual LG Units

The Smart Wi-Fi Enabled Front Load Washer and Dryer are comparable to the WashTower but sold individually. All three use the LG ThinQ app and have large-capacity tubs and drums (4.5 cu. ft. for the washer tubs and 7.4 cu. ft. for the dryer drums). They all have tempered glass doors and almost identical customer ratings.

While the control panel is a bit different between the WashTower and individual units, they all have an LED display. The individual units have control knobs and touch buttons, while the WashTower has only touch buttons. Theyre all also energy-certified, but the individual units seem to have a few more wash and dry settings than the WashTower.

Personally, I think the WashTower has all the wash and dry settings we need as a small family with an infant. From the product descriptions, it does look like the individual machines offer low-decibel, quiet operation, which the WashTower does not have. That would probably be nice if youre not wanting to wake a sleeping baby, for instance. Although, I dont find the WashTower overly noisy.

If youre choosing between the LG WashTower and the individual LG Smart Wi-Fi Enabled Washer and Dryer, Id say it boils down to whether you want your washer and dryer stacked. The stacked unit takes up less floor space and makes space in the laundry room for other things like shelving.

The compare products feature allows you to shop and compare all LG washer and dryer models. This feature gives you a full breakdown of all the appliances specs and features. You can also toggle to see differences only between products.

Final Verdict

So far, Ive loved the LG WashTower. It looks great in my space, and the space-saving, stackable design leaves floorspace in the laundry room for shelving and cabinets. It also makes it easier to walk into my laundry room without bulky appliances side by side. Ive enjoyed using the ThinQ app to program laundry cycles and routines. The remote start function is helpful when you dont want to come home to wet clothes sitting in the washer. (You can delay the start of the cycle or trigger it to start remotely from anywhere.) The washer gets my clothes very clean, and the dryer works well, especially on the timed-dry setting. While I wish you could manipulate specific settings within pre-programmed cycles in the app and that the dryers sensor was more accurate, the WashTowers efficiency, overall appearance and advanced features (like steam cleaning) outweigh the hiccups.

If youre looking for a stacked washer/dryer unit, the LG WashTower is unrivaled.

The 4 Most Common Washing Machine Problems and How To Fix Them https://www.familyhandyman.com/article/washing-machine-problems/ Tue, 27 Aug 2024 20:08:54 +0000 Washing machine repair: Fix 90 percent of clothes washer breakdowns with these four easy fixes, including filling and draining problems, grinding noises and a failure to spin. You'll avoid the service call.

The post The 4 Most Common Washing Machine Problems and How To Fix Them appeared first on Family Handyman.

Instead of searching the internet for washer repair near me, well show you how to fix it yourself. Washing machine repair may sound complicated, but these machines are pretty simple inside. With a few basic tools and the steps we show here, you can solve most problems yourselfand save the cost of a service call. We wont cover every fix, but the repairs we show will correct about 90 percent of washer troubles, like Maytag or Kenmore washer repairs.

These common washer repairs are a snap for the average do-it-yourselfer. Youll need a socket set or nut drivers, screwdrivers and a flashlight. Repairs can take as little as an hour but set aside a full morning to diagnose the trouble, get parts and complete the repair.

The outer cabinet in Whirlpool and some other brands lifts off completely, giving you access to all the parts. The washer in Maytag and some other brands has removable front and back panels.

  • Tip: Make sure your washer has power! Unplugged cords and tripped breakers are common causes of appliance breakdowns.

How to Access Your Washing Machine’s Parts

Whirlpool-Type Washer

The 4 Most Common Washing Machine Problems And How To Fix Them

To remove the outer cabinet from this type of washer, first pull off the side trim pieces and remove the retaining screws. Flip the console up and release the spring clips with a screwdriver. Tilt the cabinet forward and lift the cabinet off.

Maytag Washer Repair

The 4 Most Common Washing Machine Problems And How To Fix Them

To remove the front panel on this type of washer, yank the bottom of the panel outward (you may have to first remove screws). Pull the panel down and out.

Common Washer Machine Problems

Grinding Noise

The 4 Most Common Washing Machine Problems And How To Fix Them

If you own a Whirlpool direct-drive washer (the water hoses attach to the left side when viewed from the back), youve probably got a broken couplera common failure caused by overloading the machine. Its an easy and inexpensive fix.

Pop the snap retainers with a screwdriver and pull the pump off the motor shaft. Then disconnect the electrical connectors from the motor. Pop the bottom retainer off the motor and prop up the motor while you pop the top retainer (its heavy). Pry the broken coupler pieces off the motor and transmission. Tap the new coupler into place with a wooden block.

Draining Problems

The 4 Most Common Washing Machine Problems And How To Fix Them

When clothing or jewelry gets stuck in the hose to the pump or the pump itself, the machine wont drain, and you might hear squealing, grinding or smell burning rubber. First, remove the stuck hose that goes from the tub to the pump (drain the water into a bowl) and check for stuck socks (yes, thats where they go). Then, run a coat hanger through the tube and pull out the stuck objects. Next, check the pump for broken blades by shaking it.

Rotate the pump shaft to make sure it spins freely. Replace the pump if you find any damage. If you see any burned or melted sections on the belts, replace them. Maytag belts are specially designed, so dont substitute an ordinary V belt.

Slow Fill or No Fill

The 4 Most Common Washing Machine Problems And How To Fix Them

If yourwashing machine fills slowly or wont fill at all, try cleaning the inlet screens on the water valve. If that doesnt help, replace the entire water valve assembly.

Wont Agitate or Spin

The 4 Most Common Washing Machine Problems And How To Fix Them

If the machine fills with water and then just sits there, suspect a broken lid switch. To test the switch, youll need a continuity tester or a multimeter. Remove the wires connected to the switch and touch the testers probes to the switchs connectors. As you open and close the lid, readings should alternate between continuity and no continuity. If not, replace the switch.

To replace the switch on a Whirlpool-type washer, just remove the two screws and screw in the new one. To get at the switch on a Maytag-type washer, youll have to unscrew the access panel behind the console and replace the switch as shown here. Remember to raise the lid before you remove the old switch.

  • Tip: Never drop a washing machines lid! Slamming the lid eventually wrecks the lid switch.

What to Do When Water Is Coming Out of Your Dishwasher Air Gap https://www.familyhandyman.com/article/how-to-fix-dishwasher-air-gap/ Thu, 22 Aug 2024 15:18:58 +0000 https://www.familyhandyman.com/?p=630886 A foul smell or dirty water squirting out of the air gap vent holes indicates a clog inside the air gap. The fix is a simple cleaning with household disinfectant.

Dishwashers are game changers in the kitchen. They speed up cleanup and mostly automate an otherwise time-consuming chore. But they’re also prone to some of the same plumbing issues as your sink and other drains. If your dishwasher’s air gap is spewing water, it’s time for some plumbing repairs.

What causes a dishwasher air gap clog?

An air gap prevents dirty dishwater from backflowing into fresh water lines. But ground-up food and grease can build up inside the air gap and form a clog over time.

Why do I need to get my dishwasher air gap clog repaired?

This clog can cause water to shoot out of the air gap, making a mess over your counters and potentially flooding the area under your sink.

You’ll need to fix this problem sooner rather than later or else what started as a simple clog could end up being a lot of water damage. If water squirts out the air gaps vent holes or you notice a foul smell coming from it, its time to clean it. Fortunately, this repair is easy and doesn’t require a specialist or fancy tools. All you need is a bottle brush and some household disinfecting cleaner.

When Water Is Coming Out Of Your Dishwasher Air Gap

How to Fix a Dishwasher Air Gap That’s Spewing Water

  • Yank the cover off the dishwasher air gap and remove the snap-in or screw-on diverter.
  • Remove any loose food particles.
  • Soak the bottle brush in household cleaner and plunge it up and down into the air gap.
  • This should clear the clog, but sometimes the backup is further down. If you still have a water leak after cleaning the air gap, clean the drain line where it meets the garbage disposer or drain wye (aka Y).
  • Once the clog is cleared, wipe everything down and then reassemble the air gap vent.

You’ve solved your problem and saved yourself the headache of repairing water damage and deep cleaning your kitchen after running your dishwasher.

The best steam cleaners lift dirt without feeling like you’re lifting a finger. A good steam cleaner can tackle everything from mold-ridden grout to mildewy bathrooms to coffee-stained couches.

According to our product testers, theWagner 925e Steam Machine Elite is one of the best out there. They have tested nearly a dozen steam cleaners in multiple hands-on tests, and the Wagner 925e shines. In this Wagner steam cleaner review, we’ll detail this machine’s features and compare it to other top options.

(Psst: Don’t miss these steam cleaner sales.)

What is the Wagner Steam Cleaner?

Officially, the product we’re reviewing here is called the Wagner Spraytech 925e Steam Machine Elite. It’s an upright, corded steamer that comes with nearly 20 accessories and can produce steam for 40 minutes per clean. When you buy the Wagner steam cleaner, you’ll get:

  • Two extension poles
  • Attachments: squeegee, fabric steamer, carpet glide, jet nozzle, stiff nylon brushes (4 total in two sizes), brass brushes (2), triangle steam mop
  • Two types of cleaning cloths for mop head

  • Cleans exceptionally well on almost all surfaces
  • Suitable for fabric, upholstery, carpet, tile, vinyl flooring and glass
  • 180-degree head maneuverability
  • Long hose and cord
  • Lightweight, weighing 11 lbs when full

  • Corded design
  • May leave minor water marks on upholstery
  • Could be better at cleaning glass

Wagner Steam Cleaner Features

Wagner Spraytech 925e Elite Steamer

Here’s a rundown of the most important features to consider before buying the Wagner steam cleaner. (Learn what to know about steam cleaners in our guide.)

Easy Setup and Intuitive Use

The 925e Steamer scored an impressive 4 out of 5 points for ease of use and intuitiveness: Anyone could open the box and get it to work. Setup is easy, according to our testers, who said you “simply fill and plug in, attach the tool head of choice and press the trigger to activate steam.”

Attachments snap on instead of twisting on, which is great, they said. The steamer can stand up on its own, but if you don’t set it down gently enough, it’ll fall over. Our testers also loved the fold-down handle and trigger lock.

Post-steaming cleanup is easy, too. Our testers said: Just dump water out of the top. “Our only note is to make sure it’s cooled down like all of the steam cleaners. The tools under the hood stayed in place because the door stays secure.”

Quick Heating

According to the manufacturer, the water heats to temperature in nine minutes. Our product testing team found that statement to be accurate.

Corded Design

The Wagner 925e Steamer is a corded model, which might be a dealbreaker if you’re looking for something portable. However, the cord is long at 192 inches or 16 feet. Plus, it has wheels (though not 360-degree) that allow users to roll the steamer easily.

Long Hose

The hose is 77 inches, or about 6.5 feet, when fully extended. Between the hose and cord lengths, our testers determined that this steamer can reach anywhere in a typical home.

Powerful Cleaning

The Wagner steam cleaner scored exceedingly high on almost every test we put it through. It earned 5 out of 5 points on the coffee stain test for removing coffee stains from upholstery in an impressive 15 seconds. It was “amazing, exceptional work,” according to our product testing team.

Additionally, this steamer pulled dirt off of tile and unsealed grout incredibly well, earning 5 out of 5 points from our testers in that regard, too. The Wagner also earned a perfect score for our vinyl cleaning test, cleaning muddy footprints off of the flooring in 30 seconds.

Our testers loved the unique triangular attachment for flooring, noting that it’s excellent for edge-to-edge cleaning. It also has a plastic piece that glides over the carpet and two fabric pieces for cleaning hard floors.

It didn’t score quite as high on our glass-cleaning test. When using it to clean toothpaste and fingerprints off of a mirror, our testers said it “left some streaks but, overall, got the job done.” They gave it 3.5 out of 5 points for this test.

Dewrinkling Power

Our testers awarded the Wagner steamer another 5-out-of-5 score for the de-wrinkling test because it removed all of the wrinkles from our test curtains in just 90 seconds.

Machine-Washable Cleaning Pads

The Wagner steam cleaner’s cleaning pads are machine-washable, though our testing team hand-washed all the pads. The brushes can be washed in the sink.

Accessories and On-Board Tool Storage

One perk our testers loved was the onboard tool storage under the steamer’s hood. They noted (happily) that all of the attachments fit inside without issue. One of their favorite attachments was the large triangle mop head, which they said is excellent for steaming fabrics or cleaning large surfaces.

How We Tested It

Wagner Spraytech 925e Elite Steamer

Our product testing team put the Wagner 925e Steamer through a battery of tests. They rated its performance in the following scenarios:

  • Cleaning tile and unsealed grout within 30 seconds
  • Removing coffee stains on upholstery within 90 seconds
  • Cleaning muddy footprints on vinyl flooring within 30 seconds
  • Dewrinkling curtains within 90 seconds
  • Cleaning a glass mirror with toothpaste smears and fingerprints with one pass and within 10 seconds

Additionally, our team of product testers rated a variety of other criteria, including:

  • Ordering, packaging and delivery
  • Setup and ease of use
  • Specifications and measurements
  • Dryness and watermarks
  • Cleaning and emptying
  • Value

FAQ

What can you do with a Wagner steam cleaner?

The Wagner 925e Steamer is incredibly capable. Our testers used it to clean coffee stains from upholstery, remove dirt from tile and unsealed grout, mop up muddy vinyl flooring and remove fingerprints and toothpaste from glass mirrors.

How much water goes in a Wagner steamer?

The Wagner 925e Steamer, which we tested, can hold a maximum of 40 ounces of water. Other models may hold more or less.

How to fill the Wagner steam cleaner?

To fill the Wagner 925e Steamer with water, simply open the top and pour water in or use a sink or hose to fill it.

What Other Reviewers Had to Say

Customer reviews of the Wagner 925e Steamer are mostly positive, with some critical ratings mixed in. On Amazon, the steam cleaner has an average rating of 4.3 out of 5 stars, with more than 17,500 total ratings as of this writing. For the volume of ratings, a 4.3 average is exceptional.

The top positive review on Amazon raves about the steamer. The buyer states they could pull grime and mold out of their grout and clean the entire kitchen with just one tank (40 ounces) of water. This buyer also felt that the Wagner steam cleaner helped them achieve a cleaner bathroom than they could previously achieve.

Even the top critical review is rather positive: The buyer notes several things they loved about the steamer but also points out that they wish it had cleaned their grill better, wasn’t so large and had a water tank level indicator.

Wagner Steam Cleaner vs. Dupray Neat Steam Cleaner

Dupray Neat Steam Cleaner

Dupray is another popular home cleaning product manufacturer. Our product testing team also tried the Dupray NEAT Steam Cleaner, putting it through the same battery of tests that they put the Wagner 925e through.

There are a few things our product testers liked more about the Dupray over the Wagner, including:

  • 360-degree wheels
  • 54-ounce water tank (Wagner holds 40 ounces)
  • No watermarks left on the upholstery
  • Keeps fabrics relatively dry
  • Built-in funnel

On the other hand, the Wagner beat out the Dupray in some categories. For instance, the Dupray has no place to wrap the cord or hose when not using the unit, which makes it a bit cumbersome to store. Additionally, it didn’t perform too well on the glass-cleaning test. Our testers said the squeegee skips a lot and gets stuck, and for certain types of cleaning, the pressure coming out of the machine is too much.

Dupray Neat Steam Cleaner Test

Final Verdict

Overall, the Wagner 925e Steamer performed really well on all of our tests. “It’s highly maneuverable and has a triangle mophead for cleaning corners,” our testers said. “The pressure was outstanding, and it would be great for indoor or outdoor projects alike.”

RCA Mini Fridge Review: We Tried It, and Here’s What We Think https://www.familyhandyman.com/article/rca-mini-fridge-review/ Mon, 12 Aug 2024 17:56:48 +0000 https://www.familyhandyman.com/?p=629425 A product tester's in-depth review of the RCA Mini Fridge, and whether he thinks it's the best option for those in dorms, offices and RVs.

The post RCA Mini Fridge Review: We Tried It, and Here’s What We Think appeared first on Family Handyman.

]]>
As a freelance writer, there are many times when I’m thirsty or hungry but don’t want to or can’t leave my desk. And since my partner vetoed my proposal to put an office in the kitchen (rude), I had to find another way to keep my favorite sodas and snacks nearby. The solution? The RCA Mini Fridge.

Yes, I have a standard kitchen refrigerator and a garage fridge. Do I still use this mini fridge on a regular basis? You bet. I love having it as a “backup” fridge if my full-sized one gets too crowded or to stash some of my favorite beverages for a rainy day. Plus, having a mini fridge in your office is one of the ultimate flexes (this is still true for home offices).

In my RCA Mini Fridge review, I’ll run through the features that separate it from similar models, my experience with it over the past four months and some things I don’t like about it. We’ll also compare it to the GE Mini Fridge to see which is the best mini fridge for your dorm, office or garage.

What is the RCA Mini Fridge?

The RCA Mini Fridge is a 3.2 cubic foot mini refrigerator that can be used in campers, college dorm rooms, offices and more. It’s also listed as a garage-ready fridge, so it can be stored in your garage workshop (the company says the fridge wasn’t built to work in areas colder than 55 degrees).

Here’s your ultimate guide on setting up a garage fridge or freezer.

The fridge has two removable shelves that can be moved to your liking and side shelves perfect for storing soda cans and other drinks. The thermostat is adjustable from 1, the warmest option, to 6, the coldest.

The RCA Mini Fridge has a 0.2 cubic-foot freezer compartment. To remove excess frost, a defrost button is located in the center of the adjustable thermostat.

If aesthetics are important to you, you’ll be happy to know this mini fridge is available in six different colors (stainless steel, black, white, blue, green and purple). All options are magnetic, so you can stick your favorite fridge magnets on the door.

RCA started as a radio company in 1919. It now makes several home appliances, including several portable and mini machines like fridges and dishwashers.

We Tried It

RCA Mini Fridge

A compact, quiet fridge fit for any space

Pros:

  • Quiet and compact
  • Leveling feet
  • Removable shelves
  • Small freezer compartment
  • Magnetic door
  • Reversible door hinges
  • Garage-ready
  • Adjustable thermostat and defrost button

Cons:

  • Short 1-year warranty

RCA Mini Fridge Features

Adjustable Temperature

The RCA Mini Fridge has six cooling levels that can be set via a dial inside the fridge. The dial ranges from 1 to 6, with 1 being the warmest and 6 being the coldest. Here’s the thingI don’t know what any of those numbers mean, and I can’t find anything about them on RCA’s website.

In other words, I can’t tell you exactly how much of a difference the settings make. I’ve played around with the adjustable temperature a little bit, and you can tell the difference between level 1 and level 6, but it’s nothing drastic.

The adjustable temperature only affects the fridge, not the freezer compartment, which is always set around freezing temperatures (32 degrees Fahrenheit).

The button in the middle of the adjustable dial defrosts the freezer, which prevents excess frost from building up and is one of the easiest ways to avoid fridge repairs.

Adjustable Feet

The RCA Mini Fridge has adjustable leveling feet, so it sits comfortably on any surface. I haven’t used this feature, but I love that it’s there. Some floors are slanted or otherwise wonky, and the ability to adjust the feet as needed ensures your cans or other food items won’t roll around.

Freezer

Rca Mini Fridge Freezer

The RCA Mini Fridge comes with a 0.2 cubic foot freezer compartment, which is the best way to describe this “freezer.” There’s enough space for a small ice cube tray or an ice cream bar or two, but you won’t fit a week’s worth of TV dinners into this thing. It’s better than having nothing, but if you’re someone who likes their ice or really needs a freezer, I’d look elsewhere.

Reversible Door

Like some bigger fridges, the RCA Mini Fridge has a reversible door that allows you to change the direction it opens, so it can be used in just about any space. This is another feature I haven’t taken advantage of simply because I’ve had no need to, but after looking up the instructions online, I see that it seems pretty simple to do if needed.

Reversible doors can also be found on the Gladiator fridge, one of our favorite garage fridges.

Removable Shelves

Rca Mini Fridge Removable shelves

The RCA Mini Fridge has two small removable shelves to organize it however you want. If you have a taller item, simply remove one of the shelves so it doesn’t hit it. Speaking of storage, there’s also ample shelf space on the side for your cans or bottles.

Multiple Colors and Magnetic

If you put this fridge in a room with a specific aesthetic, you can match the RCA Mini Fridge to your decor. There are six color options (stainless steel, black, white, blue, green and purple). I went with the stainless steel option, and it’s attractive and has a nice shine (in fact, you can see me in more than one of the product shots accompanying this review).

I like the fact that it’s magnetic, so you can stick special magnets on it.

How We Tested It

Rca Mini Fridge Compressor Testing

I’ve been using the RCA Mini Fridge for about four months in my home office for two main uses: drink and snack storage and backup to my main kitchen fridge.

Here’s the thing: I don’t like my food and drinks super cold. I just want them to be chilled, and this compressor-powered fridge does just that. If you, however, like your sodas arctic-like, then this isn’t the fridge for you. Even at its coldest setting, the fridge never got cold enough to the point where it felt like a full-sized fridge.

During my testing, I also paid close attention to the noise. As I mentioned, there’s a small compressor in the RCA Mini Fridge, so it will make some noise. In my experience, this is a very quiet fridge that you’ll only hear if you’re specifically listening to it. I had this close to my desk and bed, and not once was it loud enough to disturb a meeting or wake me up in the middle of the night.

FAQ

What is the red button on the RCA mini fridge?

The red button on the RCA mini fridge is the defrost button, which allows you to easily defrost your mini-fridge. This ensures the fridge works properly and should be done periodically since there is no automatic defrost function.

Is RCA a good mini fridge?

Our tester believes the RCA mini-fridge is a great option for those in offices, dorms or anywhere else where you might need a small fridge to chill their drinks or snacks. It’s offered at a good price, comes in multiple colors and has a small freezer drawer. The door hinges are reversible, so they should work in any space.

What is the coldest setting on an RCA mini fridge?

The RCA mini-fridge uses a temperature dial that goes from 1 to 6, with 6 being the coldest and 1 being the warmest. RCA doesn’t specify what temperature those numbers correlate to.

What Others Had to Say

The RCA Mini Fridge has a 4.3 average rating on Amazon, and as of this writing, it has more than 17,000 reviews. More than 12,000 of those reviews are 5-star ratings.

“This fridge is the perfect size for what we needed in our office,” says 5-star Amazon reviewer Carly. It keeps things very cold and is so quiet that we often have to check to make sure it is still running. There is a lot of space inside for snacks and drinks in the office. Would purchase this again.”

Some customers complain that the mini fridge has a short lifespan. “The freezer component completely builds up ice every other week that we need to thaw and water melts everywhere, and since it’s a year out of warranty they will do nothing to help,” says Amazon reviewer Lily, who gave it 2 stars. “Way too much money to spend on a fridge for it to be broken after two years.”

RCA Mini Fridge vs. GE Mini Fridge

It’s a little difficult to compare the RCA Mini Fridge to the GE Mini Fridge because the latter company has more types. To make it as fair of a fight as possible, we’ll compare the RCA Mini Fridge to the GE Energy Star Compact Refrigerator.

The first difference is in GE’s name. It’s an Energy Star-certified mini fridge, meaning it’s energy efficient and won’t run up your energy bills. The RCA Mini Fridge hasn’t impacted my electricity bill, a sentiment echoed by other Amazon reviewers. However, as far as I can tell, it’s not an Energy Star appliance.

The GE Mini Fridge also has 4.4 cubic feet of space, compared to RCA’s 3.2 cubic feet. The freezer compartment on the GE is 0.47 cubic feet, and RCA’s is only 0.2 cubic feet. Both have manual defrost, reversible doors and leveling legs.

The GE’s larger capacity comes with a larger price tag, but it might be worth it if you use this as your only fridge (such as in a dorm room). The RCA is a good option for those seeking a second fridge in their office or garage.

GE also made our list of the most reliable fridge brands.

Final Verdict

Rca Mini Fridge Final Verdict

The RCA Mini Fridge is a great option for those with limited space looking for an office, RV, garage or dorm fridge. It’s very quiet and has a freezer compartment, a reversible door, multiple colors and removable shelves. At under $200, it’s a great value, but it may be too small for some people.

Our major gripe with it was the fact that the adjustable thermostat had no correlating temperatures.

Product Features

Shark Flexbreeze Fan Features

The FlexBreeze’s versatility makes it uniqueit truly does it all as far as fans go. It functions both corded and cordless and has a remote control that attaches discretely and conveniently to the fan. You can choose from five different fan speeds and 180 degrees of side-to-side oscillation to cool any room, big or small. The fan tilts up and down, too.

At just over 12 pounds with a large top handle, the FlexBreeze is super portable, so you can haul it around to any room in the house and anywhere in the yard. Its UV- and water-resistant, so you dont have to worry about the elements impacting it, and its surprisingly quiet, so its perfect for sleeping.

The fan has a boost mode that lets you feel its breeze from over 70 feet away, and the misting attachment easily connects to any hose to make an area feel up to 10 degrees cooler.

The FlexBreeze is available in dark grey and has fine rose gold detailing, making it look top-quality, even in an indoor living space. Plus, its backed by a two-year warranty against defects in material or workmanship.

How We Tested It

Shark Flexbreeze Fan in a Box

The Shark FlexBreeze arrived at my doorstep in a medium-sized box. Plenty of protective packaging ensured the fan arrived in pristine condition. Inside the box: The fan, remote, misting attachment and charging cord. I simply pulled the fan from the box and put the pieces together to set it up as a pedestal fan. Theres no assembly required apart from connecting the pieces to use the FlexBreeze as a pedestal fan or tabletop fan.

Upon unboxing, I was immediately impressed by the fan’s lookdark gray with gold hardwareand blown away by its quietness. I dont think Ive ever operated an outdoor fan as quiet as the Shark FlexBreeze.

Shark Flexbreeze Fan Remote

In pedestal mode, the fan stands about 36 inches tall, which is perfect for cooling off while sitting down. You can also angle the fan head upward to cool off higher points while standing. I did have to charge it for a few hours before using it unplugged, but once it was charged, I got at least 20 hours out of it in different modes.

Shark Flexbreeze Fan Pedestal mode

With the fan oscillating, it had zero issues cooling my hot kitchen, even while I used the oven on a summer night. In tabletop mode, the fan is great for pups who need to cool off on the floor. It also sits nicely on a desk or counter while working in an office or garage. Want to take it with you? It travels well since its compact and cordless. Its great for camping, and Shark even makes an On-the-go Car Charger for the fan.

The misting attachment is an added luxury, especially for our pups, who absolutely love it while lounging on the deck. But its also great for tropical plants; the monstera on our porch is a big fan, too. The body of the fan isnt bulky at all, either. It takes up little space for as much power as it packs, and the pedestal’s base is heavy enough that you dont have to worry about tipping.

While Shark says you can feel the breeze in boost mode from over 70 feet away, I think the fan is best felt 10-15 feet away in fan speeds 1-5. The misting attachment easily snaps onto the front of the fan, which has discrete tubing that runs down the side of the fan and attaches to your garden hose. Its quick to set up, and the mist is fine enough that you wont get noticeably wet.

FAQ

Shark Flexbreeze Fan FAQ

Is the Shark FlexBreeze worth it?

We think so! The fans adaptability to any environment automatically makes it a smart value if you need a fan for indoor and outdoor spaces. Plus, its powerful enough to cool just about any room, has a misting attachment, is surprisingly quiet and looks great.

Does the Shark FlexBreeze oscillate?

It does. It can oscillate and tilt to reach every corner of the room.

What Others Have to Say

Heres what buyers have to say about the Shark FlexBreeze Fan, which has a 4.5-star rating on Amazon.

Verified purchaser Megan Dunigan says, The Shark FlexBreeze is a top contender in the portable fan market, offering robust build quality, excellent battery life, and powerful performance. It’s an excellent choice for anyone looking to stay cool at outdoor events or even just in different areas of their home without the hassle of cords. Its ability to charge while in use ensures uninterrupted comfort, making it a reliable companion on hot days. Highly recommended for those seeking a blend of convenience and effectiveness in their cooling solutions.

Angie D gives it five stars, too. I love Shark products for their quality and ease of use. I have so many in my home, but [I] was initially skeptical when I ordered this. So many brands claim their fans are quiet and are still super loud even on the lowest setting But oh my GOSH this fan is quiet, they say. Worth every single penny. I also recommend purchasing the fan cover to keep it clean when not in use during the off season. Very easy to get on and off and keeps your fan dust free. Thank you Shark for making the best fan on the market!

Final Verdict

Shark Flexbreeze Fan Final verdict

I’m sold after using the Shark FlexBreeze for a few months (the hottest months of the year). Its versatility, long battery life, cool mist attachment and sleek look are worth the price tag.

If youre in the market for a portable outdoor fan, the Shark FlexBreeze is my favorite one Ive tried. If you are looking exclusively for an indoor fan and dont need a misting attachment, you might opt for a tower fan like the Dreo Air Purifier Tower Fan. However, the FlexBreeze performs great indoors, too.

Dreo Tower Fan Review: This New Smart Fan Keeps You Cool While Purifying the Air https://www.familyhandyman.com/article/dreo-tower-fan-review/ Tue, 16 Jul 2024 20:41:13 +0000 https://www.familyhandyman.com/?p=623681 With an infant in a bedside bassinet, I need a fan that keeps the room cool and purifies the air. Here’s my honest review of the all-new Dreo 2-in-1 Tower Fan.

The post Dreo Tower Fan Review: This New Smart Fan Keeps You Cool While Purifying the Air appeared first on Family Handyman.

]]>
Its officially summertime, and in the Midwest, temperatures have already reached over 100 degrees (which usually doesnt happen until late summer). Our home cooling system has struggled to keep up with the unprecedented heat, and its been a critical mission to keep our infant cool during sleep. If you have kids, you probably know how serious it can be for babies to overheat.

I was eager to test the all-new Dreo Air Purifier Tower Fan MC710S early this summer to beat the heat and share my findings. Below, Ill give you the rundown on the new air-purifying fan and how it performed in my hot house. If youre looking for other ways to keep your bedroom cool while you sleep, check out my review of the best cooling bed sheets.

What is the Dreo Air Purifier Tower Fan?

To say I was curious when I heard Dreo released a smart purifying tower fan is an understatement. Dreo has made some of the best-selling tower fans on Amazon in recent years, and I was in the market for one. (Bonus points for it being a 2-in-1 air purifier and tower fan.)

Unlike most other air purifying fans, the Dreo Air Purifier Tower Fan has a dual motor that allows it to function as both a purifier and fan simultaneously and exclusively as a fan or air purifier. The best part? Its designed to rival competitor purifying tower fans like those from Dyson but at a fraction of the price. Its also designed to offer more air speed at lower noise levels.

The dual filtration system is outfitted with HEPA filters, and the whole tower can be controlled through the Dreo app. The app allows you to monitor a rooms temperature and air quality while changing and scheduling the tower’s functions. And if youre not into apps, theres a traditional handheld remote for easy use, and you can always use the buttons on the top of the tower.

We Tried It

Dreo Air Purifier Tower Fan

A 2-in-1 device that cools the room while cleaning the air.

Dreo Air Purifier Tower Fan Product Features

Dreo Tower Fan

The stand-out feature that makes the Dreo Purifier Tower Fan unique is the dual-motor design, which allows independent cooling and air purification settings. The dual motors deliver airflow up to 27 feet per second with a maximum distance of 39 feet to cool the entire room. The HEPA filters catch 99.97% of small particles, while the pre-filter traps catch large particles from the air.

There are 12 different wind speeds, three purification levels and three oscillation settings, including symmetric, asymmetric and targeted airflow. You can adjust the oscillation angle in increments of five degrees so that the fan cools the exact area you need to be cooled with precision. Theres also an ultra-quiet sleep mode for nighttime cooling.

Dreo Tower Fan Review App Screenshot

The Dreo app lets you control the fan remotely while viewing the rooms temperature and air quality when you’re out of the room. You can pair it with Alexa and Google Home for added features like voice control. The device is nearly 47 inches tall and has a diameter of about 11 inches. It weighs just under 18 pounds.

How We Tested It

Dreo Tower Fan Review App Screenshot

The Dreo Air Purifier Tower Fan arrived at my front door in a large, long box. The box was a bit intimidating at first, but setting up the fan required removing it from the box and plugging it in once it was open.

From there, you can use the fan immediately with the remote control or download the DREO app and pair the fan with your smartphone. The app gives you more control settings that you can access from anywhere. The app combines the buttons on the fans remote control with the information displayed on its touchscreen, like the rooms air quality and temperature, data reports, and the remaining filter life of the fan. The app also lets you set detailed schedules for the fan, pair the fan with your existing smart home devices, control the oscillation angle and purification level, set a child lock on the device, change the display settings and more. It may seem like a lot for a fan, but the app makes using the fan super easy. I also like the overall look and functionality of the appits design makes it simple to use, and I havent yet experienced any hiccups or glitches.

Dreo Tower Fan Review App Screenshot

The smart tower fan puts out a significant amount of air. It has 12 wind speeds, and I rarely go past level 10, even on the hottest days. I tend to leave the air purification setting on auto so that it adjusts to the air quality reading. One of the most impressive features of the tower fan is its quietness. The fan can function at 25 decibels, which is barely audible, and the fan and air purifier can function together at 38 decibels, somewhere between a whisper and light rain. Even on the highest settings, I dont find the fan to be loud at all. I like the static noise it puts out, providing a bit of white noise to help my baby sleep at night.

Ive only encountered two issues in the first few months of using the Dreo Air Purifier Tower Fan. Sometimes, the fan gets caught up while oscillating. Its nothing major, but Ive noticed that the device momentarily gets stuck when in oscillation mode. The pause is never more than a second or two, but its worth noting. Additionally, Ive wondered whether the temperature reading on the device is totally accurate. With an infant, we monitor each bedroom’s temperature and humidity level with a precise digital device. Occasionally, there will be a discrepancy in the temperature reading between that device and the fan (sometimes as much as 2-3 degrees), even when the two are sitting side by side.

Dreo Tower Fan

Pros

  • High-speed fan with quiet function
  • Dual-motor design
  • Purifier and fan work individually
  • H13 HEPA filter
  • Multi-color air quality indicator
  • Smart control
  • Touchscreen interface
  • Easy to set up and turn on
  • 12 fan speeds
  • 3 purification levels and an auto-purification mode
  • 3 oscillation modes
  • Oscillation angle can be adjusted
  • Sleep mode with quiet function
  • Works with Alexa and Google Home
  • App is easy to use
  • Remote control included
  • Carrying handle helps transport from room to room
  • Easy to clean

Cons

  • Occasionally stalls in oscillation mode
  • Room temperature readings may not be 100% accurate
  • Not Energy Star certified

FAQ

Do Dreo fans cool the room?

The Dreo Air Purifier Tower Fan certainly does! I use it in our medium-sized primary bedroom to help keep my infant (who sleeps in a bedside bassinet) and me cool throughout the night. It cools the entire room and makes us comfortable without issues.

Are Dreo fans quiet?

Yes. Most fans in the Dreo product family operate around 28 decibels on the lowest wind speed settings. While the air purifying system adds a bit of noise when combined with the fan, its still quiet.

How does the Dreo Air Purifier Tower Fan compare to the Dyson TP09?

With a 4.5-star rating on Amazon, many buyers compare the Dreo Air Purifier Tower Fan to the Dyson TP09.

One five-star reviewer, Ctran, says the Dreo tower fan is taller than the Dyson TP09 and very quiet in comparison to the Dyson. Ctran also says the Dreo fan has a much stronger air output than the Dyson TP09. Additionally, they note that the Dreo fan is significantly cheaper than the Dyson tower fan.

Another review from verified purchaser BD reads: Bought this to supplement my AC and ceiling fans in the hot Georgia summers. Fan provides excellent breeze across a 20-foot room. The ability to adjust the oscillation symmetrically and asymmetrically allows the tower to be placed in any position of the room and still cover all areas. I can’t comment too much on the filtration systems efficiency, however I have witnessed it kick on when cleaning. It automatically detects chemicals in the air and attempts to clean them.

Dreo Air Purifier Tower Fan vs. DREO Tower Fan

If youre wondering how the Dreo Air Purifier Tower Fan compares to the brands popular standard tower fan, the biggest difference is in the name. One has an air purifying feature, while the other doesnt.

However, the Dreo Tower Fan has more than 26,000 reviews on Amazon with a 4.6-star rating, and it retails for just $70. It also functions at similar quiet noise levels with high windspeeds, oscillates and has timer functions. While you wont get the same smart features (such as app control or smart home pairing), its a compact option at a fraction of the price. While I prefer the overall look and functionality of the Air Purifier Tower Fan, the regular Dreo Tower Fan is an excellent budget-saving pick, especially if you already have another air purifying device.

Final Verdict

If youve been looking for a 2-in-1 air purifier fan, the Dreo Air Purifier Tower Fan is a top contender. Its quiet, effective and relatively affordable compared to similar products from competitor brands. Plus, the fan and purifier operate independently for different uses. Its smart features allow for voice and app control, and it has an H13 HEPA filter that traps small particles to help maintain your air quality.

Ive been pleasantly surprised by the Dreo Air Purifier Tower Fan and would recommend it to anyone looking for a 2-in-1 air purifier fan.

Coleman Camp Stove Review: From a Vanlifer’s Perspective https://www.familyhandyman.com/article/coleman-camp-stove-review/ Mon, 01 Jul 2024 13:13:19 +0000 https://www.familyhandyman.com/?p=622165 After using the Coleman stove for 7 months, I've figured out what I love (and what I'd change) about this versatile camping staple.

The post Coleman Camp Stove Review: From a Vanlifer’s Perspective appeared first on Family Handyman.

]]>
A goodno, an excellentcamp stove is a must-have item for every type of camper. Whether you’re a car camper staying in established campgrounds, a campervan traveler scooping up dry camping spots in National Forests, or a backpacker sleeping in primitive wilderness sites, you need a way to prepare food. Cold-soaked oatmeal and jerky just doesn’t cut it all the time.

When I bought a campervan in 2023 and set out on an adventure with no time limit, I knew from the start that a top-tier camp stove was high on my priority gear list. I’d gotten away with cheap, single-burner models in the past, but knowing I was going to cook my every meal outside of my van for the foreseeable future meant I had to invest in a great one.

Naturally, I turned to Coleman, because the brand is by-and-large synonymous with camping. I researched a few models and ultimately decided on the Coleman Cascade 3-in-1 camp stove, partly because it includes all of my nonnegotiable features and partly because it was available at my local Academy store.

Ahead, I share everything I love about the Coleman Cascade camp stove after using it almost daily for seven monthsand the very few things I’d change about it.

What is the Coleman Camp Stove?

The Coleman Cascade camp stove is a 3-in-1 dual-burner camp stove that comes with two cooktops: a cast iron grill and a cast iron flat griddle. You can also use any other type of pot, pan, or cooktop on the cast iron cooking grate.

With 24,000 BTUs of total cooking power, the Cascade camp stove is capable of making any meal a camp meal, which is why I highly recommend it. I’ve been living in a converted camper van for seven months and plan to live in it for many more, so having a highly functional and versatile camp stove (like having good camping storage boxes and good hiking boots) is a must.

The Cascade allows me to cook most of the meals I’d cook living in a house or apartment; usually, if I choose not to cook a certain something, it’s because I don’t want to deal with the related cleanupnot because the Cascade can’t handle it.

Coleman Cascade Camping Stove

Coleman Camp Stove Features

Instead of just dishing out praise for my favorite-ever camp stove, let’s look at the features so you can decide if it’s the right portable stove for you.

Propane-Fueled

The Cascade 3-in-1 stove runs on propaneand propane only. Don’t try to use it with a butane-propane mix or butane. It works with 16-ounce propane canisters, AKA the small green ones available at most outdoor stores. It is not designed to be used with larger propane tanks.

Two Burners

With two burners, you can cook your main dish and your side dish simultaneously, a luxury for any camper who has used a single-burner camp stove. The Cascade comfortably fits two 10-inch pots or pans next to each other; a 12-inch and a 10-inch pan can squeeze.

Dual Cast Iron Cooktops

The Cascade comes with both a cast iron grill cooktop and a cast iron griddle cooktop. The griddle is excellent for frying eggs, toasting bread, making quesadillas, and generally making any meal that cooks best on a flat surface. The grill is ideal for cooking meats. I’ve used it for steaks, pork chops, burgers, and kabobs.

24,000 BTUs

The stove is quite powerful, running at a maximum of 24,000 BTUs. I rarely run the stove at maximum capacity; I’ve only needed to in extremely cold temperatures (near or below freezing). For most meals, I find the low-to-medium settings sufficient.

Automatic Ignition

Fhma24 Coleman Camp Stove Review Amanda Capritto Ssedit 04

You won’t need a lighter handy for the Cascade 3-in-1: Flames appear at the click of the automatic igniter. In seven months of near-daily use (and often using the stove multiple times per day), I’ve had zero issues with the igniter.

Easy-Carry Handle and Regulator Storage

There’s a built-in handle on the bottom of the stove body, making it easy to carry around in one hand. The design also features built-in storage for the regulator, so it stays safe and doesn’t rattle around or get lost.

Removable Cast Iron Grate

The cast iron cooking grate on the Cascade stove comes off as a single piece, which is convenient and makes for easy access to the stove body for cleaning. However, I’ve found that the stove can still be quite hard to clean. There are several nooks and crannies that small food bits and oils can get stuck in, and the grate itself is a bit cumbersome to scrub.

Aluminum Body

The body of the stove is made of aluminum. It’s rather durable, which I learned after a gust of wind in wintery New Mexico blew down the table my stove was perched on. (No dings or malfunctions!). The aluminum is easy to wipe down, except for the parts that are hard to reach as mentioned above.

Wind Screens

When in use, the stove has three windscreens: The lid that flips up, plus two small screens that fold out to either side. These are also made of aluminum and do an okay job of blocking wind from affecting the flames. If I could ask Coleman to fix one thing in a future model of this stove, I’d ask for more robust wind protection. It’s sufficient in most cases, but in cold, windy weather, expect to be frustrated.

Flat-Fold Design

The Cascade stove folds flat when not in use. This makes it incredibly easy to store. I slide mine into the above-cab storage shelf in my van and still have room to store other things on top of and around it.

How We Tested It

Fhma24 Coleman Camp Stove Review Amanda Capritto Ssedit 03

I’ve been using the Coleman Cascade 3-in-1 Camp Stove for seven months at the time of writing. I use it almost daily while traveling and living out of my converted camper van. I’ve used it to make:

  • Coffee (pretty much every morning)
  • Hot tea and hot chocolate
  • Popcorn
  • Soup and gumbo
  • Jambalaya
  • Burgers
  • Breakfast scrambles
  • Burritos
  • Pizza
  • Steaks
  • Pork chops
  • Various pastas
  • And probably more that I can’t remember!

In addition to using the included cast iron griddle and grill with the stove, I’ve used a 10-inch cast iron Dutch oven, nonstick pans, stainless steel pots and pans, and a ceramic-coated Dutch oven. I’ve also used the cooking surface directly to toast bread and warm tortillas.

This stove has come along with me from Miami, Florida to Tuktoyaktuk, Northwest Territories, Canada at the shore of the Arctic Ocean. It has performed exceedingly well in various weather conditions, from below-freezing temperatures to sunny and 75. I’ve also used it at altitudes ranging from sea level to above 9,000 feet, and considering the usual deviations in cooking times associated with altitude, it has exceeded my expectations.

Notably, winter winds in New Mexico once blew over the table that my Coleman stove was perched on; it took a rather hard tumble, but I never noticed any performance detriments or even cosmetic damage. (OK, so there is some cosmetic damage at this point, but not as a direct result of its perilous fall.) Ten points to Coleman for durability!

While I test a lot of gear to eventually review it, this Coleman camp stove review is happenstance. I bought the stove with my own money because I needed a good portable stove for van life, and several months after the fact, I decided I ought to review it. All that to say: You can trust that this review is the product of a genuine experience with the product.

Pros

  • Two burners
  • Automatic ignition (no lighter needed)
  • Comes with cast iron grill and griddle
  • 24,000 BTUs total cooking power
  • Works with most 16-ounce propane canisters
  • Lightweight and easy to carry
  • Integrated storage for the fuel regulator
  • Durable build
  • Works well with all types of pots and pans
  • Flat build is easy to store

Cons

  • Average wind resistancecould be better
  • Relatively heavy
  • Nooks and crannies are hard to clean

FAQ

Can I hook up a 20-pound propane tank to a Coleman stove?

No, Coleman camp stoves are designed to be used with 16-ounce (1 pound) small propane tanks. There are adapters available that may allow you to use larger propane tanks with Coleman camp stoves, but it is not recommended by the manufacturer.

Is it safe to use a Coleman stove in the house?

It’s not recommended to use any propane or butane stove indoors. Coleman camp stoves are designed for use outdoors or in extremely well-ventilated areas. Burning propane gas releases carbon monoxide, a gas that can build up in the bloodstream and cause a life-threatening emergency. Follow the instructions on the owner’s manual of your Coleman camp stove to ensure you’re using it safely.

Can a Coleman stove boil water?

Yes, a Coleman stove can boil water. The Coleman Cascade camp stove is extremely efficient at boiling water. I use it almost every morning to make coffee; it boils water in a kettle in a matter of minutes. Different Coleman stoves will have different boiling times; boiling times are also affected by temperature, altitude and wind.

What Other Reviewers Had to Say

Customer reviews and reviews by other gear testers of the Coleman Cascade 3-in-1 Camp Stove are largely positive. Gear testers praised the Cascade for simmering efficiency, durability, and portability while criticizing the could-be-better wind resistance. Some gear testers complained about the slow boiling time, but I don’t personally agree with that; my experience has been that the stove is efficient at boiling water.

Customer reviews indicate that buyers love the Cascade for its sturdiness and durability, as well as the multifunctional cast iron cooktops and dual burners. They love that it lights easily and that the cast iron grill and griddle come with a carrying bag to keep them in good condition (and keep oil or cast iron conditioner off of other items in your cabinet).

Coleman Camp Stove vs Eureka

The Eureka Ignite is another popular automatic ignition, dual-burner camp stove. It’s strikingly similar to the Coleman Cascadeit even has a similar appearance, down to the color. The Ignite is slightly less powerful than the Cascade with 20,000 total BTUs (10,000 per burner). It also works with 16-ounce propane canisters.

Where the Eureka Ignite exceeds in performance compared to the Coleman Cascade is in wind resistance. The design of the Ignite is much more square, and the side windscreens are much larger. A friend of mine has the Eureka Ignite stove, and we’ve used it dozens of times when camping together. It most definitely blocks the wind better than the Coleman Cascade does.

One notable difference between the two stoves is the cooking grate. The Cascade features a robust cast iron cooking grate, while the Ignite features a stainless steel grate that’s lighter but slightly less stable to use, in my opinion. That is, the cast iron grate on the Cascade feels stickier (in a good way) and it’s difficult for pots or pans to slide around.

All in all, though, the cooking experience is very similar on the two stoves. You can’t go wrong with either option. If budget is a factor, the Eureka Ignite is less expensive by about $85.

Final Verdict

I highly recommend the Coleman Cascade 3-in-1 camp stove for car campers and van campers. Individuals traveling in a class A or class C RV may already have a sufficient stove inside their rig, but I’d still recommend the Cascade for outdoor cooking. After using this stove almost every day for seven months, I’ve found it to be highly capable of cooking a variety of meals, quick to boil water, and easy to use and store. I wish it had better windscreens and was easier to clean, but overall, I give it two thumbs up.

How To Clean Refrigerator Coils https://www.familyhandyman.com/project/how-to-clean-refrigerator-coils/ Mon, 03 Jun 2024 14:24:17 +0000 https://www.familyhandyman.com/?post_type=project&p=588158 Don't let dusty coils bog down your fridge. Follow these simple instructions on how to clean refrigerator coils for optimal performance.

The post How To Clean Refrigerator Coils appeared first on Family Handyman.

Cleaning the coils on your refrigerator is not a glamorous task. But it is an important refrigerator maintenance chore that improves the refrigerator’s efficiency. The coils help the refrigerator release heat so it stays cold enough to keep the food at proper cool temperatures. Its easy for dust and debris to accumulate under the refrigerator (as you probably already know). The dust can cling to the coils and prevent heat from releasing efficiently. A refrigerator consumes more energy when working harder due to dirty coils.

It took less than an hour to clean the coils. At first, I tried a soft-bristled brush, but I ended up using a Swiffer duster because it was thin enough to get between the coils. I cant promise Ill clean the refrigerator coils every month, but now that I know how quick and easy it is, I wont wait years to do this again.

Unplug the fridge

Unplug the refrigerator to avoid any electrical hazards. Then, put on a dust mask.

I Tried the Gladiator Refrigerator in My Garage, and Here Are My Unfiltered Thoughts https://www.familyhandyman.com/article/gladiator-refrigerator-review/ Wed, 29 May 2024 19:56:15 +0000 https://www.familyhandyman.com/?p=616698 Is the Gladiator Refrigerator worth the hefty price tag? One homeowner tested it in his garage fridge, and while he likes it he does have some concerns.

The post I Tried the Gladiator Refrigerator in My Garage, and Here Are My Unfiltered Thoughts appeared first on Family Handyman.

]]>
For many years, the Gladiator Refrigerator has been a go-to garage fridge recommendation, and on the surface, that makes sense. It’s spacious, can withstand extreme temperatures, has many great features and has a sleek design that works with any garage.

But is it worth the hype, and are there better garage fridges out there? That’s what I wanted to find out, so I decided to test the Gladiator garage refrigerator in my garage.

Here’s the elevator pitch version of my Gladiator fridge review: It’s one of the best things I’ve done for my relationship because it allows me to have extra food on hand while not crowding the kitchen fridge (which my girlfriend is very thankful for), but I do have some concerns about its durability.

Read on to find out more.

What is the Gladiator Fridge?

The Gladiator All Refrigerator is a garage-ready fridge. Its powerful compressor keeps food cold even in a garage that may experience rapid temperature changes. Unfortunately, Gladiator doesn’t specify what type of compressor it uses.

Let’s look inside: There are 17.8 cubic feet of storage space, and as the name implies, it’s just a fridge (Gladiator sells a freezer that looks just like the fridge). You get adjustable edge-to-edge shelves, two drawers and five door shelves.

But wait, there’s more. A step-to-open foot pedal allows you to open the door even when your hands are full, and depending on where you’re putting it, you can change the direction the door opens. Need to move it elsewhere in your garage? That is no problem since the fridge has caster wheels for easy portability.

It’s also Energy Star-certified, and according to EnergyGuide, it only costs about $41 a year to run (this figure might change based on your usage and local climate).

Gladiator is owned by Whirlpool, which also makes several garage-ready fridges and smart fridges and produces several appliances and storage systems for your garage.

The garage refrigerator everyone's talking about

Gladiator Fridge Features

Let’s take a closer look at what makes the Gladiator Fridge one of the best choices for garage refrigerators.

Spacious

Gladiator Refrigerator

Remember when I said the Gladiator Fridge was one of the best things I did for my relationship? Well, I was only being a little sarcastic when I said that. I’m a foot taller than my girlfriend and frequently lift weights, so my caloric demands are higher than hers. Our kitchen fridge simply didn’t have enough space to hold all the food I needed to stay full during the day, which is why most of my protein and extra snacks live in the Gladiator Fridge.

Here’s a quick look at how much food we have in our fridge right now:

The 17.8 cubic feet of storage space is enough for large families or those who like to entertain. To give you an idea of the size of this refrigerator, a 17.8 cubic foot kitchen fridge (which includes the freezer space) is considered “small.” But again, this is just a fridge with a wide-open design to fit as much food as possible.

However, the Gladiator Fridge has a fundamental flaw: no door open sensor or alarm. We’ve been cautious about shutting the door is closed every time we retrieve something, but there’s been one or two times we’ve found it slightly ajar. Thankfully, it wasn’t open for long during those times, but I would’ve liked to see a beeper to let people know when it’s not sealed correctly.

Although I like having the door shelves for beverages and other items, I have to nitpick the bottom shelf for a second. We use this to store wine bottles and other drinks, but I’ve found that they tend to roll around if they’re not packed strategically. It doesn’t happen all the time, but it’s been often enough that it’s an annoyance.

Adjustable Shelves

Gladiator Refrigerator

The Gladiator Fridge’s edge-to-edge adjustable shelves help increase its capacity. I love it when fridges have this option because sometimes I want to marinade a large roast or conduct a kitchen experiment, like making my own pickles, and I want to make sure it doesn’t hit the shelf above it. Sometimes, you want to chill tall wine bottles or stack a large number of soda cans for a party.

Whatever you put in this fridge, there are numerous ways to configure it so everything is secured safely.

Wheels

Gladiator Refrigerator

Gladiator doesn’t say how much its garage refrigerator weighs, but I can tell you it’s a hefty son of a gun and would take at least two people to place it on a dolly. Luckily, you won’t need that since it has casters that effortlessly glide on concrete for easy portability.

Important note: You must put the wheels on before setting this up in your garage. We didn’t do that, and now our fridge is filled with things, so we can’t put the wheels on. I will say that these casters feel heavy-duty.

We don’t plan on moving this fridge much, so the lack of wheels isn’t a huge issue for us.

It does, however, mean we can’t take advantage of one of the cooler features.

Step-to-Open

Gladiator Refrigerator

Opening the Gladiator Fridge isn’t difficult, even when holding a 36-count Diet Coke and two rotisserie chickens in your hands. Still, if you need an extra hand (figuratively speaking), there’s a step-to-open feature. We didn’t realize that you couldn’t install this once the fridge is set up because, like the casters, it needs to be on its side to install it properly.

I tried putting it on while the fridge was upright with no luck.

Interchangeable door

Gladiator Refrigerator

While I haven’t taken advantage of this feature, it’s nice to know that you can change what direction the door opens simply by unscrewing and screwing a couple of bolts into a bracket. This allows it to fit into any space in your garage.

Energy Star-certified

Don’t worry about a second fridge running up your electricity costs. According to the EnergyGuide, the Gladiator Fridge is Energy Star-certified and should only cost about $41 per year to operate. This number may change based on your usage and where you live. For example, if you live in Florida or Arizona, the compressor may need to work harder to keep your food cool than someone who lives in a more moderate climate.

I live in North Carolina, which gets humid during the summer. We haven’t seen a significant uptick in energy costs since installing the Gladiator Fridge about two months ago, but I’ll update this article if anything changes.

Check out our tips for garage refrigerator and freezer maintenance.

Garage Ready

Gladiator Refrigerator

It goes without saying, but the most important feature of the Gladiator Refrigerator is the fact that it’s garage-ready. This industry term means it can be placed in a garage and keep food cool thanks to a powerful compressor.

Gladiator doesn’t specify what type of compressor it uses for the All Fridge, which is where one of my major concerns comes into play. In reading through the customer reviews for this fridge, I found several complaints that it stopped workingsome people said it lasted one year, others said it took up to five for it to break. You can make a garage refrigerator work again on your own, but it’s often an expensive and laborious process.

It’s not uncommon for fridge compressors to stop working; honestly, it’s a matter of when and not if it will break. That said, the Gladiator Refrigerator costs around $1,500. It would be nice for something that expensive to last a bit longer than five years.

To be fair, the compressor has to work a bit harder due to the temperature changes, so we shouldn’t expect it to have the same durability as an indoor fridge.

How We Tested It

Gladiator Refrigerator

The Gladiator Fridge has been our backup refrigerator for about two months, and we’ve been using it to store extra food that can’t fit in our kitchen fridge. During those two months, we’ve checked to see that all food is still cool, beverages are kept cold, and there are no signs of a broken door seal or other maintenance issues.

I will update this Gladiator fridge review with any problems should there be any.

Pros

  • A lot of space
  • Edge-to-edge adjustable shelves
  • Garage-ready
  • Energy Star-certified
  • Step-to-open feature
  • Interchangeable door
  • Wheels

Cons

  • Only comes with a one-year warranty
  • No “door open” sensor

FAQ

Gladiator Refrigerator

Who makes the Gladiator fridge?

The Gladiator Fridge is produced by Gladiator Garage Works, which the Whirlpool Corporation owns.

What makes a fridge garage-ready?

A garage-ready fridge has a compressor that can withstand outdoor temperatures and temperature changes and still keep your food cool. Additionally, it usually has a durable exterior compared to kitchen fridges.

Where are the Gladiator fridges made?

Gladiator doesn’t specify where its fridges are made, but its parent company, the Whirlpool corporation, produces all of its products in the United States of America.

What other Reviewers Had to Say

People seem to love the Gladiator Fridgewhile it still works, that is. Its website has an average rating of 2.8 out of 5, with most of the complaints being about the fridge dying after six months to about five years. Many customers also seem upset at Gladiator/Whirlpool’s customer service.

“As many reviews have said, this thing does not last very long,” customer reviewer Reno614 says. “It is way too expensive to only last that long.”

Customer reviews on Home Depot are slightly better, with a 3.9 out of 5 average rating. One customer says their fridge has lasted 12 years, which is the longest I’ve seen out of the dozens of reviews I’ve read. “It still works fine, except for the defrost condensate line,” writes Boilerfan. “I only need to empty it every 6 months.”

Still, other Home Depot customers complain about short-lived fridges and poor customer service.

Gladiator Garage Refrigerator vs. GE Fridge

Whirlpool and GE are two of the most reliable refrigerator brands, and the two companies are at the top of the list when it comes to garage fridges. But which brand should you go for?

The GE Garage-Ready Fridge is the clear winner if you’re looking for extra freezer space. It looks and acts just like a kitchen fridge but can work in temperatures ranging from 38 to 110 degrees Fahrenheit.

“Springtime in New Jersey is unpredictable, and we’ve had 50-degree and 85-degree days,” says Caitlyn Fitzpatrick, senior shopping editor. “The GE has performed well through them all, and the fridge’s contents have remained at the ideal temperature.”

Looking at the customer reviews, it seems to last a little longer than the Gladiator Fridge.

Gladiator, however, is still the winner when it comes to storage space. The GE Fridge is 21.9 cubic feet, but some of that is reserved for the freezer (which doesn’t have a light).

Final Verdict

Time will tell if the Gladiator Fridge is a worthwhile appliance. As of this writing, it’s done well in keeping food cool in various temperatures, and I’m a big fan of the space it provides. I’m still a little peeved that it doesn’t come with a door-open alarm, and the complaints about its short-lived compressor worry me a little, but I will enjoy it while it lasts.

Appliances Looking Worn Out? Here’s an Easy Fix https://www.familyhandyman.com/article/appliances-looking-worn-out-heres-an-easy-fix/ Tue, 28 May 2024 15:59:59 +0000 Yellowed handles can make a refrigerator or other appliance look old before its time. Fix the problem easily with a spray paint designed for plastic surfaces.

The post Appliances Looking Worn Out? Here’s an Easy Fix appeared first on Family Handyman.

The white refrigerator in your kitchen didn’t come with yellow handles, but they’re yellow now. Even after cleaning, they’ll still look pretty grungy against the bright white porcelain cabinet. New handles are pretty pricey, so why not just paint your old ones? It’s an easy and cheap solution that doesn’t take too much time.

You won’t need many supplies; simply buy a can of paint formulated to paint plastic at a home center. Then, pick up a bottle of degreaser and a scrubbing pad. With a little scrubbing and some patience while things dry, you can have a fridge that looks as good as new, even several years down the line!

Pop the Caps and Screws

Pop The Caps And Screws

Pry off the vanity caps that cover the side screws. Then open the fridge door and remove the other screws. Next, remove the handles. Wash them with a degreaser and hot water; use a scrub pad on textured areas to remove the dirt. Pay particular attention to dirt in crevices. Your painted appliances won’t look great if you’ve just painted over the dirt instead of cleaning them first. Then wipe the handles with a dry cloth and let them air-dry.

Apply the Paint

Apply The Paint

Mask off any emblems or chrome trim and paint the handles. Spray the sides of the handles before doing the flat surfaces. Be sure to alllow the recommended flash time before applying additional coats; patience is key here. Once the paint is dry, flip the handles over and paint the other sides. To be efficient with your time here, paint the vanity caps at the same time.

After everything is dry, reinstall the handles. You may have to repaint them in a few years, depending on how close to perfect you want them to look. But in the meantime, these painted appliances will keep your kitchen looking bright and fresh.
