Pet hair is nothing new for dog owners. On a daily basis, our furry family members lovingly scatter so much of their hair across our floors, furniture and clothes it’s a wonder they still have any attached to their bodies. While there are pet hair vacuums for floors, rakes for carpets and hair removal tools for clothes, wouldn’t it be great if we could nip the majority of shedding directly at the source? That’s when I came across the Hicozy dog grooming vacuum.

This two-in-one grooming and vacuuming machine brushes and trims your pet while collecting all the loose fur in the process. I wondered, was it possible for this tool to proactively de-shed and suction my dog’s fur instead of having it coat everything in sight? I had to see for myself.

What is the Hicozy dog grooming vacuum?

Dog Hair brush and other equipment on couchNancy Snyder/Family Handyman

Unlike regular dog grooming tools or a pet deshedding brush, the Hicozy dog grooming machine is attached to a vacuum to suction up hair as you go. It comes equipped with six professional pet grooming tools to help you groom and trim all within the comfort of your own home. And the best part? No mess to clean up afterward.

The Hicozy dog vacuum comes equipped with the following accessories (and a storage rack to hold them all):

  • Slicker brush: helps smooth tangled hair and collect loose fur
  • De-shed brush: helps shed your dog’s undercoat
  • Electric trimmer (plus five guard combs and trimmer brush): to trim overgrown hair around the face, body and tail
  • Scissors: To manually trim excess hair around ears and between toes
  • Nozzle brush: post-grooming cleaning tool to suction loose pet hair from floor and hard surfaces
  • Cleaning brush: another cleaning tool to tackle pet hair by brushing and suctioning it off furniture and clothing

Hicozy Dog Grooming Vacuum Features

The Hicozy dog grooming vacuum is a full-service grooming and suctioning machine. Here are its most notable features:

Two-in-One Dog Grooming Vacuum

Brush, detangle, de-shed and trim your pup—all while vacuuming the hair away. The suctioning power pulls up loose fur while grooming your pup, and there’s no need for cleanup!

Powerful Suction

The dog grooming vacuum features a 300-watt, high-powered motor that reaches a suctioning power of up to 1.74 pounds per square inch (psi). The motor also comes equipped with a high-efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filter that clears 99% of hair, resulting in less pet fur scattered across the floor, carpet and furniture.

One-Click Release Button

The deshedding tool and slicker brush feature a release button that conveniently pulls the hair up and out so that it can be suctioned into the vacuum. No need to manually pull it off—the button does the job for you so you can get back to work!

Pet-Friendly Cozy Mode

Hicozy S1+ Pet Grooming Vacuum Nancy Snyder/Family Handyman

Hicozy knows that grooming can be an uncomfortable experience for your pet. That’s why it included a “Cozy Mode” setting, which gradually powers up the vacuum over a duration of five minutes to calm anxious pups and avoid stress. If your pup is well acclimated, you can skip this mode and click the power button once more for a low suction, and twice more for a higher suction.

2-Liter Dust Cup

The large, 2-liter capacity dust cup means more grooming and less dumping. And a convenient button under the dust cup allows you to dispose all fur into the trash with just one click. For larger or double-coated breed owners, vacuums with higher tank capacities, such as the Hicozy, are essential due to the significant volume of fur these dogs shed. Its 2-liter tank can accommodate more fur, reducing the need for frequent emptying during grooming sessions.

Easy Storage

The vacuum includes a storage plate for all grooming accessories, as well as a convenient place to house the cord underneath the machine when not in use.

How We Tested It

I tested the Hicozy dog grooming vacuum on two dogs: a larger, short-haired pit bull and a smaller, long-haired papillon. I wanted to see how the grooming accessories performed on varying hair lengths, as well as assess ease of maneuverability of the tools on different dog sizes. Plus, my pit bull doesn’t need a cut by any means, so I wanted to be able to test the trimmer on a pup that does.

If you want to give your dog the full spa experience, you could give him a bath first. While I skipped this step, I highly recommend the Aquapaw Pro.

Short-Haired Dog

I first tested the grooming vacuum on my pit bull, Ernie. Although he has short fur, he sheds like a maniac, and I was eager to see whether the vacuum would help suction up some of his excess hair. The video tutorial on Amazon suggests brushing your dog with the slicker brush first without the vacuum running to acclimate your dog, so that’s exactly what I did.

Next, I pushed the “Cozy Mode” button, and the vacuum let out a low, gentle sound that’s similar to white noise. While the vacuum is in this mode, it’s not suctioning at all, but simply easing your dog into the sound of the stronger vacuum settings.

With the vacuum at a low suction, I continued brushing Ernie with the slicker brush. The sound made him a little uneasy at first, but as I continued brushing him, he seemed to find it relaxing. While the brush picked up some fur, it wasn’t as much as I’d hoped. But to be fair, most pet brushes I’ve tried in the past provided similar results. Even at the low setting, I could tell the suctioning power was strong, but the brush just wasn’t able to grasp anything for it to suck up.

I next moved onto the deshedding brush and found it also failed at grasping much of Ernie’s fur. Since the remaining accessories were for hair trimming, it was time to move onto my next furry client.

Long-Haired Dog

I next tested the dog grooming vacuum on my sister’s papillon, Charlie. I followed the same testing method, but because her pup is a little more skittish than Ernie, some coaxing dog treats were in order. I was worried the tools might be too large for her small body, but they worked just fine!

With the slicker brush, I was amazed to see how effective it was at grabbing loose hair while smoothing out Charlie’s long coat in the process. And each time the brush collected a tiny heap of fur, I was able to clear it into the suctioning tube with just a click of a button. I next utilized the deshedding tool and found that it also was able to gently pull a generous amount of hair from Charlie that she would have otherwise shed all over my sister’s home.

Throughout the grooming, Charlie actually seemed to enjoy herself! Once the initial concern of the noise passed, I think both dogs associated the machine with a relaxing massage. In fact, while Hicozy recommends leashing your dog to keep them in place, neither Ernie nor Charlie needed to be restrained—they were willing participants!

Next, I used the hair trimmer to tidy up some overgrown hair around her ears and tail. For this part, I utilized an extra set of hands from my sister, as this is a more delicate process that requires some extra care and caution. It helped to have an extra hand to pull the hair straight and away from her body when cutting for extra precision. And in a matter of minutes, Charlie was cleaning up nicely (and forgoing all future grooming appointments)!

Cleaning Tools

Lastly, I put the two cleaning tools to work. While the vacuum sucks up the majority of hair as you go, your dog will naturally shed wherever you have them stationed (which in Charlie’s case was atop a towel on the dining room table). I was impressed at how well the cleaning brush worked to pull all of the hair off with ease! And the nozzle was an added bonus for suctioning anything that made its way down to the hardwood floors below.

FAQ

Do dog grooming vacuums really work?

Absolutely! For heavy-shedding breeds, grooming vacuums significantly improve the cleanliness of your home, making it more hypoallergenic by effectively managing pet hair.

Can I use a vacuum to deshed my dog?

Yes, you can use a regular vacuum to de-shed your dog by purchasing specialized grooming attachments. These tools feature special brushes designed to de-shed your dog while ensuring its comfort.

What do dog groomers use to keep dogs still?

Professional dog groomers combine calm and gentle tones, patience and rewards to help their canine clients stay still. For more wriggly dogs, some groomers use a grooming noose or other restraints for added control.

Do dog grooming vacuums work on short hair dogs?

It depends on the breed. While the Hicozy vacuum may not perform as effectively on short-haired dogs, various attachments designed for different coats and breeds can enhance its performance, so it’s worth experimenting to see what works best for your dog.

Product Comparison

If you’re unsure about investing in specialized grooming equipment, you can use general vacuum or forced-air tools, like a leaf blower, for quick fur removal. This method effectively blows out loose fur before vacuuming, making it especially beneficial for heavy-shedding breeds. Combining these tools can enhance your ability to remove large amounts of fur and minimize buildup around the house.

Additionally, various attachments are compatible with household vacuums, allowing you to groom your pets without a significant investment if you already own a high-powered vacuum. However, consider the noise levels for anxious pets. If your household vacuum lacks adjustable suction settings and lower decibel levels, it may be wise to invest in a dedicated grooming vacuum, such as the Hicozy, designed with pet comfort in mind.

Final Verdict

Overall, this dog grooming vacuum was a hit with our long-haired papillon! Not only were the tools effective at detangling, smoothing, deshedding, trimming and trapping Charlie’s fur, but she wasn’t afraid of the vacuum. She found the process rather relaxing—and let’s be honest, that’s really half the battle. In fact, while testing the vacuum on Ernie once more, she came back and was hoping for a second turn!

With the Hicozy dog grooming vacuum, you can ditch scheduling those costly grooming appointments and provide more routine grooming maintenance before things get too out of hand. Plus, the deshedding tool helps to keep that frequent hair shedding problem at bay.

Brushing a Dog and other dog watchingNancy Snyder/Family Handyman

While I had unrealistic expectations of the vacuum working on my master shedder, Ernie, I can’t blame the Hicozy, as I have yet to find any tool that pulls loose hair directly from his short coat. For that reason, I would only recommend the Hicozy dog grooming vacuum for long-haired dogs. For everyone else, we’ll have to invest in one of these products that remove shedding hair around the home.
