How To Stop Dogs from Marking Their Territory in Your Yard https://www.familyhandyman.com/article/how-to-stop-dogs-from-marking-their-territory-in-your-yard/ Fri, 22 Mar 2024 21:06:13 +0000 What's the common woe in almost every neighborhood? Dogs marking on lawns. Here's how to stop dogs from marking territory in your yard.

The post How To Stop Dogs from Marking Their Territory in Your Yard appeared first on Family Handyman.

]]>
Whether you own a dog or not, dog pee can find its way into your yard and kill your grass. Dog urine is a combination of lactic acid and urea. Interestingly, urea is valued in fertilizer for its high concentration of nitrogen. But too much nitrogen will fry your luscious greenery to a crisp.

“I have two female dogs, so I have firsthand experience [with burnt grass],” says Jim Baird, Ph.D., a turfgrass specialist at the University of California, Riverside.

Theoretically, he says, opting for a grass species that utilizes rhizomes (underground stems) and stolons (above-ground runners or lateral stems) should allow for quicker recovery from urine spraying. But if you’re like Baird, whose pups mark the same spot again and again, we have some tips.

Here’s why dogs mark their territory and how to stop them from doing it in your yard, according to canine experts.

Why Are Dogs Marking in My Yard?

“Marking is natural behavior and a form of communication for both male and female dogs,” says Dr. Annette Louviere, data and veterinary genetics manager at Wisdom Panel.

Marking and peeing are both forms of urinating. But instead of relieving themselves, Louviere says dogs mark “as a way to let others know they are present and to demonstrate ownership.” Dogs typically mark where another dog has been or urinated previously.

Intact dogs are more likely to mark than spayed or neutered dogs, but pups that began marking before being fixed can continue the behavior.

Usually, you’ll recognize a dog is marking versus peeing if they’re going on a vertical surface with their leg raised. But this isn’t a hard rule. Dogs will sometimes mark on a horizontal surface and may or may not have their leg lifted, Louviere says.

If a dog is marking in your yard, it’s probably in small quantities. And there are ways to discourage the behavior without feuding with the neighbors. Find out why dogs are scared of fireworks.

How To Stop a Dog from Marking in Your Yard

Here are seven actions you can take to stop dogs from marking:

Restrict access

Keep them out with a decorative fence. We can’t guarantee a passing pup won’t mark your fence, so line it with gravel or mulch instead of vegetation.

For a temporary solution that’s also budget-friendly, try installing a DIY fence around the previously marked areas. For a natural dog barrier, pick up some prickly plants at a nursery or create a thorny barrier with rosebush, Hawthorne or blackberry clippings.

Change fertilizers

If you’re using an animal-based fertilizer, consider swapping it for a plant-based fertilizer.

Bone meal fertilizer is popular with gardeners cultivating colorful blossoms and fruit. It’s made from the ground-up bones of animals, a common ingredient in all-purpose organic fertilizers. While great for your blooms, the smell of its core ingredient could attract dogs to your yard.

Clean the area

Where one dog marks, you’re bound to see another marking the same spot. That’s because, Louviere says, “urine marking is a form of messaging. The dog may be communicating with other dogs that may have urinated or marked in the yard.”

According to Baird, spraying down the spot with a hose immediately following the marking can distribute the high concentrations of acids, salts and nitrogen, lessening the severity of the brown spot.

But hosing it down probably won’t eliminate the scent and discourage other dogs from marking in the same location, Louviere says. Instead, when feasible, treat the area or objects with an enzymatic cleaner.

Use dog repellents

Homemade repellents for dogs range from spicy peppers to a vinegar and citrus solution. While budget-friendly and easy to apply, they come with some downsides only temporary effectiveness, increased likelihood of attracting other pests, and possibly harming the lawn you’re trying to save.

You’ll find some commercial dog repellents, and even high-tech gadgets dispensing ultrasonic sound to keep pups and other pests away. However, they come with mediocre or poor user reviews.

Avoid placing new items in your yard

New or novel objects left lying in your yard are prime attractants for a curious pup. Keep your yard free of objects to deter neighborhood dogs from stopping, sniffing and marking their territory.

Work with your neighbors

For a direct approach, talk with your neighbors about your concerns. They may not realize the impact their pup has on your lawn, or the effort you’ve put into maintaining your lawn.

Aim for a friendly conversation and let your neighbor know if you use fertilizers, pesticides or insecticides that aren’t pet-friendly. Plus, you might have plants that are toxic to dogs. If your neighbor needs a gentle reminder, aesthetically pleasing yard signs can send the message.

Replace the grass with mulch or gravel

“Remember that marking is a natural behavior for dogs,” says Louviere. “As with all things when dealing with our pets, it’s necessary to set appropriate expectations for ourselves. And in the great outdoors, it’s not practical to think you can stop all dogs’ marking behaviors.”

If you can’t stop the marking, you may need to remove the accessible grass and replace it with a lawn alternative like mulch, gravel or artificial grass.

When It’s Your Dog Marking in the Yard

First, determine whether your dog is marking territory or just urinating often. While marking doesn’t warrant a trip to the vet, urinary issues do.

“If your dog urinates more than once per outing and cannot hold it for more than two hours, a complete urinalysis is recommended,” says Kristyn Echterling-Savage, Ph.D., owner and and CEO of Beyond the Dog. “Most dogs with a medical concern related to urinating also struggle with house soiling.”

Interrupt the marking behavior

When you spot your dog marking, interrupt them with a toy, treat or training cue. Then, Echterling-Savage says, reward them for urinating in a spot you prefer. Avoid punishing your dog for marking behaviors. It could cause confusion about urinating outdoors or exacerbate potty-time stress.

Spay or neuter your dog

Intact male dogs are more likely to mark if there’s a female dog in heat nearby. Likewise, a female dog is more likely to mark when in heat. Best to spay or neutering your dog before marking behavior occurs.

I Tried It: My Honest Bissell Little Green Review https://www.familyhandyman.com/article/bissell-little-green-review/ Mon, 12 Feb 2024 16:27:10 +0000 https://www.familyhandyman.com/?p=598949 Here’s what I learned while cleaning practically every stain in my house for this Bissell Little Green review.

The post I Tried It: My Honest Bissell Little Green Review appeared first on Family Handyman.

]]>
I’ll be honest: Before writing this review, the only experience I had with DIY carpet cleaners (other than a can of Resolve) was a monster unit I rented from a big box store many years ago. The hassle of reserving it, transporting it and learning the ropes wasn’t worth the results (IMHO). Plus, it soaked through my rugs onto my hardwood floors, and I wasnt happy about it. So, I was skeptical that this little machine would make a difference, even though TikTok and Amazon have tons of Bissell Little Green reviews.

My basement is the dumping ground for old furniture and rugs, so I had plenty of test subjects. I started my cleaning test on a beloved white shag rug with old pet stains. I was excited to try the Bissell on this rug before I called in a professional or tossed it out.

What is the Bissell Little Green Machine?

The Bissell Little Green is a portable carpet and upholstery cleaner. This handy machine has a 48-ounce tank to hold cleaning solutions and a dirty water receptacle. Similar to a wet vacuum, the machine sucks up the liquid as you clean.

The handle has a trigger-activated spray nozzle to release the cleaning solution. And a handy 3-inch soft brush tool snaps into place with the click of a tiny button.

The footprint of this machine is compact, measuring 17 inches by 8 inches, and its just under 14 inches tall, so it easily slips into a cabinet when its not in use. The carrying handle is strong and substantial for easy transport, and the unit weighs just under 10 pounds when the tanks are empty. Bissells Little Green Machine has a 15-foot power cord and a 4-foot hose that accommodates a variety of detachable cleaning tools.

Instantly cleans messes on carpet and upholstery with the power of a wet vac.

Bissell Little Green Features

Using stain cleaner and brush attachment for cleaning rugs

The Bissell Little Green comes with a 3-inch tool brush, a 32-ounce bottle of Bissell Pet & Stain cleaner and an 8-ounce trial bottle of Spot & Stain cleaner with Febreze.

This machine is ready to go out of the box, except screwing in the hose holder bracket and attaching the tool head. When the job is done, the Bissell Little Green includes a self-cleaning hose tool to keep the machine clean and fresh between uses.

The slim handle doesn’t feel bulky or cumbersome, and the attachment is lighter than my vacuum cleaner attachments, which is helpful for detail work. The Bissell Little Green is perfect for cleaning car upholstery or stairs due to its lightweight and portable design.

The 3-inch brush tool attachment included in the bundle is lightweight and easily snaps into place. The brush is soft yet substantial, with three rows of -inch bristles to gently lift out the gunk. Much like an upholstery brush, the soft bristles are gentle on fabrics. As a user, you control the angle and pressure applied to the tool. Outfitted with a clear view edge, the brush tool allows you to monitor the moisture extracted.

Its easy to fill the tank in the sink. Simply add the Bissell formula to the formula fill line, then add water to the water line. Cleaning takes less water than I imagined, and an entire tank lasted through several cleaning sessions.

Pro tip: Bissell doesnt recommend storing the machine with water and formula in the tank.

I Treated Every Stain in My House for This Bissell Little Green Review

While Im usually pretty careful around my furniture, accidents happen. Like this past Sunday morning. I snuggled on the sofa with a blanket and a monster mug of creamy coffee, and suddenly, my dog leaps to the ready at some passer-by, startling me into spilling the coffee on my brand new Grandin Road sectional. Luckily, the blanket and my sweatshirt took the brunt of the spill. But I was left with four big spots on the cushions and pillow.

Coffee Stain on Sofa

I grabbed a Swedish dishcloth to absorb what I could and ran downstairs to fetch the Bissell Little Green machine. I sprayed the stains with a vengeance. I was about eight inches away from the fabric when I pulled the trigger, which resulted in a wide over-spray area. The sprayer is hard to aim because its under the handle. Later, I realized I should have been an inch above the spot I was treating to avoid over-spraying.

Cleaning couch with Bissell Little Green

As a result of my initial panic, I didnt take the time to do a spot test in advance. After all, this was an emergency. In the meantime, I sprayed some spot remover on my sweatshirt and returned to the scene of the crime 10 minutes later to finish the job.

As the machine sucks the excess moisture out of the fabric, the stains magically disappear. Its pretty cool because you can watch liquid bubbling through the clear tool head. I let the machine do its thing until I couldnt see any more liquid extracted.

Admittedly, I was heavy-handed when spraying the solution on the spots, and it took about eight hours for the spots to dry on the thick foam cushion. The following day, I could still see a faint ring around the treated area, not from the stain but from the over-sprayed detergent. Although faded, the ring is still visible if you know what to look for.

By the way, the stains came out of the sectional but remain on my sweatshirt.

Bissell Little Green Review for Set-in Stains

Overall, I was pleased with the results while removing a fresh spill, but when I tried removing long-standing stains on a few area rugs and runners, I wasnt as thrilled.

Cleaning rug with Bissell Little Green

The first test out of the box was on a thick, 3-inch white shag rug with old pet stains. The rug had been banished to the basement five years prior, with the intention of calling in a pro. I used the Bissell Pet Spot & Stain cleaner in the Little Green machine and even treated the stains a second time 48 hours later. The detergent certainly freshened and brightened the rug, but the stains were stubborn. However, I did see a noticeable difference when I worked the detergent through the fibers with the scrub brush. On other stains, I tried a stiffer, longer brush to work through the long thick shag and also treated it with an enzymatic pet stain remover. Unfortunately, the five-year-old stains were set for life.

On other light-colored hallway runners, I spot-treated several mystery stains that were six months old or less. Among these stains were some oily tar-like marks from a repairmans boots, something sticky, random coffee splatters, ground in muddy paw prints and who knows what else? I was shocked at the black water and embedded dog hair flowing through the machine on these freshly vacuumed rugs. With patience, these stains were lifted, except for the tar-like marks.

What I Learned Using the Bissell Little Green Machine

Cleaning rug is easy with Bissell Little Green

My advice? Get close to the stain, and dont overspray. The 48-ounce detergent tank is overkill for small messes or spot cleaning, and a little goes a long way. More importantly, I learned to deep clean spills on fibers and for best results, get them when theyre fresh.

Luckily, now that I have the Bissell Little Green machine, it’s convenient to thoroughly clean messes before the stains set in. Its easy for residue to stay in fibers after simply being blotted or rinsed away. Sticky messes attract more dirt and before you know it, you have a big dark spot.

Pros

  • Easy to use
  • Lightweight and portable
  • Sucks moisture and dirt out of the fibers
  • Easy to store
  • Long 15-foot power cord for mobility
  • Large 48-ounce tank

Cons

  • Only Bissell cleaning products are recommended
  • Short hose doesnt swivel at the base
  • Loud

FAQ

Does Little Green Bissell work?

If youre looking for a quick way to thoroughly clean up messes, the Bissell Little Green machine is a good choice. It lets you saturate the fibers, loosen debris with the brush tool, and suck up the extra moisture to protect the fabric. The machine saves time and is easier than scrubbing and blotting. The powerful suction pulls excess moisture out of the fabric to aid in drying time and ensures your upholstery isnt overly saturated.

Does Bissell Little Green leave couch wet?

I was heavy-handed when spraying a fresh stain on my couch, and it took over eight hours to dry. I learned my lesson and went easy on the spray when I did a quick sweep over a dusty and drab upholstered chair in the basement. The chair was damp to the touch for about an hour. The Bissell Little Green freshened up the old, worn upholstery, but there wasnt a dramatic contrast once it was cleaned.

How long does it take carpet to dry after using Bissell Little Green?

The low-pile polyester carpets that I cleaned felt slightly damp when I was done using the machine, and they dried within an hour. Whereas the thick shag in the cold basement took a few hours to dry.

What Other Bissell Little Green Reviews Say

Cleaning cushion with Bissell Little Green

I recently took my dog to the vet and I asked her if she had ever used the Little Green machine. Her eyes widened and she exclaimed, Oh my God, I couldnt live without it! Other Bissell Little Green reviews echo the professionals sentiments.

Cindi Willette wrote a five-star Bissell Little Green review on Amazon, saying, “Let’s talk about the size of this thing. It’s like a carpet-cleaning sidekick that fits perfectly in your closet, ready to leap into action when spills and stains threaten your home’s dignity. Bissell Little Green is to carpets what Batman is to Gothamcompact, efficient and always ready for a cleanup caper.”

Collin M. also wrote a Bissell Little Green review, giving it five stars on Amazon, writing, “I absolutely love this thing, for certain, it’s simply magic. Super easy to use, there are lines in the clean water tank that show how full to put the cleaning solution vs. clean water, then you simply hook it back into place and flip the machine on. Suction is constant and there is a trigger pull to help spray the fluid or just focus on suction. What’s extra neat as well is there’s a ‘self-cleaning’ nozzle also that simply circulates the clean water through the hose into the dirty tank so you don’t have to take everything apart to clean when you are done.”

Another Five-star user, Mona, says, “I recently bought the Bissell Little Green Pet Deluxe Portable Carpet Cleaner, and let me tell you, it has been a game changer in our house. With a baby and a pet, you can imagine the kind of messes I deal with daily. This little machine has made cleaning up so much easier.”

Bissell Little Green Product Comparison

As a leader and innovator in the clean-up business, Bissell makes machines that tackle tough messes.

If youre looking for a heavy-duty carpet cleaner, Bissell has a style, bundle or size to suit your needs. For a few dollars more than the original, grab the Bissell Little Green Pet Deluxein gray or blue. This bundle comes with the 3-inch brush tool, self-cleaning hose attachment, plus, a stain trapper tool, as well as an 8-ounce trial bottle of Pet Oxy Boost and Pet Spot & Stain formula.

Pet owners arent the only people who need carpet cleaning tools that can work for multiple surfaces. Similar to the original Bissell Little Green, the portable Little Green Hydrosteam is a multi-tasking machine. Not only does it deep clean carpet and upholstery, but it also includes a hard surface cleaning tool for tile or hardwood floors.

Whats even better is that the HydroSteam adds the deep cleaning power of steam. The Hydrosteam model has three clean settings for more control, in addition to more powerful suction for quicker drying times. The larger tanks make this steam cleaner a little heavier, but the portable profile makes it easy to store and transport.

The Revolution HydroSteam adds a heightened level of deep cleaning to this upright machine with steam. Our editors tested the Bissell Revolution HydroSteam Pet Carpet Cleaner with incredible results. In addition to its easy-to-use upright wheeled design, the HydroSteam has a hose attachment for cleaning upholstery and hard-to-reach places.

Final Verdict

Great for cleaning carpet spots and upholstery

This Little Green machine works great for upholstery and spot-cleaning carpets. I like the lightweight portability and compact footprint of the Little Green machine. Whether you need to clean your car or treat a stain in the middle of your staircase, the 15-foot power cord gives you the flexibility to do it.

Im confident that the Bissell Little Green machine cleans deeper than my old blotting method or spraying and vacuuming any kind of mess. Luckily, I never noted any scent of soured milk on my sectional, because the Bissell washed it away.

The machine is stable and steady when sitting on the floor. Its durable and works well to spot clean fresh messes. Plus, its user-friendly and simple to operate. The only flaw I found while using this machine for several months, was the 4-foot hose. Honestly, it could use a few more feet to reach the back of a tall chair, upholstered headboard or deep couch. Another downside is that the hose doesnt swivel at the base, and as a result, I spent a lot of time adjusting the angle of the machine for a comfortable reach. Not a deal-breaker, but worthy of noting just the same.

Im not a fan of the manufacturers recommendation to exclusively use Bissell cleaners in the machine. However, I was pleased that the cleaner was included in the bundle and the bottle should last me a long time.

Noise Levels

As someone who suffers from hearing loss, I found this machine to be annoyingly loud, so I did a noise level check on it. According to the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) app on my phone, the Bissell Little Green scored 82.2 decibels, which is similar to a loud vacuum cleaner. For reference, my vacuum cleaner clocked in at 67.8 dB. According to the Hearing Health Foundation, noise levels above 70 dB will damage hearing over time. The NIOSH considers 85 dB hazardous when exposed to that level eight hours a day, but you’re likely not using the machine that long.

Overall, I was so relieved that I had the Bissell Little Green when I made a mess on my new sectional. It sucked up the stains in minutes. And what was even more rewarding was watching them disappear. If you want to save your furniture and carpet from unsightly stains, this affordable little unit is worth having on hand.

Best Overall Pet Stain Remover

Rocco & Roxie Stain & Odor Eliminator

The best pet stain remover products all have one thing in common: natural enzymes that break down ammonia crystals in urine and fecal matter. An bio-enzymatic cleaner doesn’t cover up the stain or smellit eliminates stains for good. The Rocco & Roxie stain and odor eliminator is beloved among pet parents for this reason. If the whopping 78,600 five-star ratings on Amazon aren’t enough, the Family Handyman team tried Rocco & Roxie and can confirm the solution is liquid gold for getting dog pee out of carpet and hard floors.

When I became a pet parent in May 2023, ordering a bottle of Rocco & Roxie was a no-brainer. The best defense against the woes of puppy house training is a powerful enzyme cleaner. Upon first spray, I was pleasantly surprised by its refreshing smell. The aroma is unlike any other cleaner I’ve tested, yet it smells weirdly familiar. It smells like root beerbut not in a bad way. It’s fresh yet woodsy in the best way possible.

As for it’s fast-acting powers? It’s essential to completely saturate the area, wait 10 minutes and then blot with a cloth or paper towel for best results. In my first month of testing, I was shocked by the effectiveness. My dog never once marked the same spot in the housea sign that even her strong puppy nose couldn’t detect where the urine scent lingered.

The real test was a Saturday morning when my puppy and I took the long way out of the apartment complex. CeCe couldn’t hold it until we got outside, resulting in an accident directly outside of my neighbor’s door. Unfortunately, the hallway is all carpet, so this was a tough mess to clean. I went home, grabbed Rocco & Roxie and headed to the saturated carpet stain. Embarrassed by the accident, I generously saturated the area with the spray. After gently blotting it, the area was obviously damp but didn’t smell like dog urine. I returned to the stain a few hours later and was shocked I couldn’t even tell where my puppy peed. It may sound silly, but I was impressed with myself, but more importantly with Rocco & Roxie for eliminating such an obvious stain. I never got complaints from the neighbors, either, so this was a total win in my books.

One year into puppy parenthood, the Rocco & Roxie pet stain remover is a staple in my cleaning closet. It’s the only low-maintenance cleaner that actually removes dog poop, urine and vomit from hard floors, carpet and upholstery. Pet messes in the house aren’t ideal, but I have peace of mind knowing this magic bottle is within arm’s reach when accidents occur.

Pros

  • Powerful enzyme cleaner that eliminates pet stains and odors
  • Safe on carpet, hard floors and upholstery
  • Doesn’t leave residue on hardwood floor
  • Eliminates old and new pet stains
  • Pleasant smell
  • Seal of Approval by the Carpet and Rug Institute

Cons

  • Can be difficult to remember to blot area with a cloth 10 minutes after spraying

How Can a Feral Cat Shelter Benefit Your Neighborhood? https://www.familyhandyman.com/article/feral-cat-shelter/ Wed, 20 Dec 2023 18:55:17 +0000 https://www.familyhandyman.com/?p=590942 Cat shelters protect neighborhood cats from harsh weather and foster a healthier community.

The post How Can a Feral Cat Shelter Benefit Your Neighborhood? appeared first on Family Handyman.

]]>
Outdoor cats face a harsh reality. Exposed to the elements and vulnerable to disease and traffic accidents, their lives are far from easy.

While many well-intended animal lovers might think to bring these felines to shelters, shelters and rescues are often at capacity, and many free-roaming cats aren’t ideal indoor pets. So says Dr. Rachael Kreisler, a veterinarian and associate professor of shelter medicine at Midwestern University College of Veterinary Medicine.

For many cats without homes, the ideal support lies in trap-neuter-release (TNR) efforts, community feeding and feral cat shelters. Here’s how you can support the cats in your neighborhood.

What Is a Feral Cat?

“Feral cats are born outdoors or released shortly after and have survived without human interaction for most, if not all, of their lives,” says Niki Padula, a cat shelter manager at MaxFund Animal Adoption Center in Denver, Colorado.

In these circumstances, kittens are born to unsocialized mothers. This lack of socialization is passed down to the kittens, who learn to fear humans. Kittens rescued from feral mothers and socialized will not be feral.

What’s the difference between a feral and a stray cat?

Unlike stray cats with some socialization skills, feral cats rarely interact with humans. You might only see a feral cat if you’re among the 10% to 14% of people feeding neighborhood cats.

“We actually like to use the term ‘community cat’ to refer to free-roaming cats,” says Kreisler.

Neighborhood cat populations tend to include feral and socialized free-roaming cats. Some of the latter were once owned and have since adopted an outdoor lifestyle. She says ‘community cats’ is a better catch-all term.

Community cats often live in groups known as colonies. While cats within colonies are frequently related, familial connections isn’t required for a cat to be considered a member of the colony.

What Is a Feral Cat Shelter?

A small, waterproof space where cats can safely rest and stay warm. The best shelters don’t have to be elaborate. If you’re providing shelter for a colony, consider offering multiple spaces that house one to a few cats.

Kreisler says sleeping together is a common affiliative behavior, so cats with strong social bonds may prefer a more spacious shelter. However, she adds, larger shelters can be more difficult to keep warm and may encourage fighting, depending on the relationships within the colony.

While commercial cat shelters are available, a DIY shelter with straw will also be greatly appreciated by your neighborhood felines.

“Sometimes people don’t like supporting community cats with shelter or food because they worry that this will increase the number of cats,” Kreisler says. “Or they would prefer that the cats were simply gone.”

This is where TNR comes in. The humane approach traps, spays or neuters and returns community cats to their original location. When resources are available, cats may be vaccinated as well.

TNR stabilizes the population by preventing breeding and curbs disruptive mating behaviors like fighting, spraying and caterwauling (meowing loudly). It also reduces the spread of disease and improves the overall health and well-being of the cats.

Among other benefits, providing community cats with shelters can make the trapping of feral cats more manageable.

Benefits of a feral cat shelter

The experts we spoke to say offering outdoor cat shelters provides the following benefits:

  • Improved welfare monitoring:Outdoor shelters simplify caregivers’ monitoring efforts by offering colonies a secure and consistent place to rest, especially during inclement weather.

  • Prevention of unwanted nesting:Shelters deter community cats from taking up residence in unwanted areas.

  • Improved well-being:Shelters contribute to the overall well-being and physical health of cats, creating a positive impact on the health of your community and its animals.

  • Aids TNR efforts:“It’s easier to humanely trap and sterilize cats that have a tie to a physical location such as shelter or food,” Kreisler says.

Tips for Making a Feral Cat Shelter

Our experts offered these tips for constructing an outdoor cat shelter:

Keep it small

The ideal cat shelter size provides enough space for a cat or two to comfortably stand up and turn around. Any bigger and their body heat will disperse, says Dani Gallardo, shelter medicine supervisor at the San Diego Humane Society.

Keep it dry and warm

Outdoor cat shelters should be insulated and weatherproofed. Wind and water-resistant exteriors keep the elements at bay. Insulation that doesn’t retain moisture, likes straw or shredded newspaper, keeps heat inside.

For extreme environments, consider adding a heating element. “Cats love electric blankets,” Kreisler says, “but for safety, they should be outdoor rated and waterproof.”

To keep the floor of the shelter dry, the structure should be off the ground. Gallardo suggests wood pallets as a DIY solution. At the entrance, opt for an L-shape design to block the elements, or add a flap to the entry point.

Keep predators out

Design the entrance so it’s small enough for only cats to enter, and consider adding a second entry point for a quick escape. Camouflage the shelter with dark paint or vegetation.

While it’s OK to put food near the shelter, Gallardo recommends feeding colonies only at specific times of the day and promptly removing leftover food. This will prevent attracting unwanted predators.

Where To Put a Feral Cat Shelter

Find a spot where the cats already feel comfortable hanging out, as long as it’s considerate to your neighbors.

Feral cats typically prefer quiet areas away from human and car traffic. Friendlier felines may not mind resting in a higher-traffic area, Kreisler says. In urban settings this tends to be a porch.

The Best Outdoor Cat Shelters, According to Experts

In addition to DIY tips, Kreisler, Gallardo, and Padula shared their favorite pre-built cat shelters:

It’s a top pick from Kreisler for a reason: Animal lovers have trusted the Kitty Tube double-insulated shelter since 2010. It’s suitable for the coldest of environments with an optional outdoor-rated heated bed, while a flap door ensures safe entry and exit.

Petsfit Weatherproof Outdoor Cat Shelter

“Made from cedar wood, this shelter is weatherproof and has a raised floor to keep moisture out,” says Padula. “It also has an asphalt roof for additional protection. The shelter is well-ventilated and provides a comfortable space for cats.”

Kreisler says shelters with porch or balcony-like structures are a thoughtful addition for cats who enjoy lounging in nice weather.

With two entry and exit points, this shelter is ideal for multiple cats. Kreisler also recommends it because the sloped roof keeps water from accumulating, while the door flaps protect against rain, wind and cold.

Deblue Weatherproof Outdoor Feral Cat House

Kreisler says that this A-frame shelter with a dome is a nice option for cats with kittens because it allows you to monitor the litter without disrupting the mother. While it costs less than $100, Kreisler notes it may require some DIY improvements, like additional caulk and leveling of the floor.

There are so many carpet cleaning machines on the market, and they’re not all created equal. When I began searching for the best carpet cleaner for pets, I obviously turned to Bissell, which has manufactured some of our favorite machines. The brand’s latest model is the Bissell Revolution HydroSteam pet carpet cleaner, which the company claims is its best carpet cleaner to date. I put it to the test ourselves to see if it’s truly as good as expected.

What is the Bissell Revolution HydroSteam?

The Bissell Revolution HydroSteam is an ultra-powerful upright carpet cleaner that uses proprietary HydroSteam technology to break up tough, set-in stains and messes that are difficult to clean, such as spills of oily or sticky substances. It offers three cleaning modes to handle jobs of all sizes, and the “Quick Dry” mode helps get carpets dry within 30 minutes. In addition to cleaning the floors using its upright design, this best Bissell carpet cleaner has an attached hose for cleaning upholstery, stairs and messes in hard-to-reach places.

We Tried It

Bissell Revolution HydroSteam Pet Carpet Cleaner

As the only upright deep cleaner with HydroSteam technology, it's now easier than ever to tackle stubborn pet messes.

How Does Bissell Revolution Carpet Cleaner Work?

Just like an upright vacuum cleaner, the Bissell Revolution HydroSteam pet carpet cleaner uses two rotating brushes to remove surface dirt and debris from carpets. The patented DirtLifter PowerBrushes and powerful suction lift up dirt that regular vacuums leave behind, and work cleaning solution deep into the carpet fibers, quickly scrubbing away stains. For stubborn spots, there’s a steam pretreat mode, as well as a quick-dry mode to thoroughly remove excess moisture.

This corded machine has easy-to-use controls on the handle, and a light-emitting diode (LED) display that lets you know what mode you’re cleaning in. Included with the Bissell Revolution HydroSteam is an 8-foot detachable hose, a 6-inch tough stain tool, a two-in-one pet upholstery tool and a three-in-one stair tool. It also comes with 8-ounce bottles of Bissell’s carpet deep-clean formula and urine eliminator formula, and a rinse and storage tray to make it easier to clean your machine after use.

How We Tested It

Bissell Revolution Hydrosteam Pet Carpet Cleaner

The Bissell Revolution HydroSteam is a monster of a machine, cleaning carpets in ways I’ve only seen professional machines do. When I tested it on a heavily soiled carpet, it felt like bringing a flamethrower to a fistfight. It demolished almost every carpet mess I threw at it with only one pass, and for the extra-stubborn stains, a second pass got them out for good.

The suction power of the Bissell Revolution HydroSteam is nothing short of incredible, pulling up dirt and lint that even a top-of-the-line vacuum can miss. It cleans with steam and soapy water simultaneously, which pulls up grime with ease. For all its power, this best carpet cleaning machine is surprisingly not as loud as you might expectit’s about the same noise as an old-fashioned vacuum, so it’s not deafening.

Bissell Revolution Hydrosteam Pet Carpet Cleaner

In addition to doing a stupendous job of getting carpets clean, the Bissell Revolution HydroSteam is very user friendly, with easy-to-adjust settings and clear markings. It’s also simple to attach and detach the clean and dirty water tanks without struggling.

As for the downsides, you should know this pet carpet cleaner is one of the heaviest carpet cleaners I’ve tested, which is to be expected from a machine this powerful. At 22.5 pounds, it’s not so heavy that it can’t be brought up and down stairs, but it does take a good amount of effort, so if you have trouble lifting things, you might need an extra hand to help out.

It’s also worth noting that this machine runs through water quite quickly while cleaning, so if you’ve got a big area to cover, you may need to refill the tank with water and additional cleaner multiple times. This model includes two small bottles of cleaner to get you started, but you may want to keep extra carpet cleaner handy, just in case.

Pros

  • Gets carpets truly cleanand quickly
  • Quick-dry mode gets carpets dry in 30 minutes or less
  • Powerful suction
  • Simple operating controls with clear markings
  • Easy to clean

Cons

  • Heavier than other cleaners
  • Pricey (but a worthwhile investment!)

FAQ

Bissell Revolution Hydrosteam Pet Carpet Cleaner

What cleaning solution do you use with Bissell Revolution HydroSteam pet carpet cleaner?

Though Bissell suggests that you use its brand of carpet cleaning solutions with this machine, in my tests I’ve found that other brands of pet carpet cleaners are just as effective. Check out the best carpet cleaners for eliminating pet stains.

What Other Reviewers Had to Say

Fellow real-life users are loving the Bissell Revolution HydroSteam for all their pet messes. Here’s what they have to say:

Amazon customer, Carly Merriman, raves that this unit is better than renting a professional machine. “My husband and I thought our fairly new carpet was ready to be removed, as we had paid for professional cleaning multiple times and the carpet just never seemed clean. We have three boys and a dog and there were stains/smells we never thought would leave,” she writes. “We decided to purchase this carpet cleaner as our last attempt to save our carpet and [I’m] so glad we did! This thing is SO worth buying. After one pass over our entire floor and a few passes over the heavily stained areas, our carpets look new and smell great.”

“I am truly amazed at how good this machine worked,” writes verified Bissell customer, Robin. “There were some very old and deeply set stains in my carpet that would go away momentarily with my older model but always seemed to reappear, and it completely removed them without a trace. I will recommend this new machine to everyone I know.”

“My little girl is in her geriatric days so theres way more accidents then before. Immediately I got this and put it straight to work,” writes five-star reviewer, Brandy. “It pulled way more out then I thought it would!! Im going to clean and deep clean the carpets this weekend and get the nasty out. And as far as the urine stain and smell remover, my house no longer smells.”

Final Verdict

Of all the best pet carpet cleaning machines I’ve tested this year, nothing has wowed me like the Bissell Revolution HydroSteam pet carpet cleaner. It’s an absolute beast that gets carpets as clean as can be, leaving them smelling fresh and looking brand new. If you’re looking to invest in one of the best pet carpet cleaning machine brands on the market, I cannot recommend this product highly enough.

If you’ve got pets, young children or someone in your house who can’t stop making spectacular messes, the Bissell CrossWave HydroSteam Plus may be the answer to your cleaning prayers. This all-in-one machine cleans up wet and dry messes on hard and soft floors, with features designed to handle debris as light as pet hair and as heavy as tracked cat litter. Here’s what I learned when I put the Bissell CrossWave HydroSteam Plus to the test.

What is the Bissell CrossWave HydroSteam Plus?

Box in the living room

The Bissell CrossWave HydroSteam Plus is a wet/dry vacuum that lets you vacuum, wash and steam floors at the same time. This floor cleaning machine is made for tackling big messes as well as the day-to-day dirt and debris that collects in cracks and corners. It’s made for use with a specialized cleaning formula that steams and sanitizes hardwood, tile and other flat floors, as well as low-pile area rugs and carpets.

We Tried It

Bissell CrossWave HydroSteam Plus

With this multi-surface wet/dry vac, you can vacuum, wash and steam at the same time.

Bissell CrossWave HydroSteam Plus Features

Bissell Crosswave Hydrosteam Plus all fittings on floor

The Bissell CrossWave HydroSteam Plus employs Two-Tank Technology that ensures you don’t end up cleaning your floors with dirty water, and has a self-cleaning cycle to run between uses to make sure one mess doesn’t carry over to the next. When used with Bissell’s hard floor sanitize formula in the tank, this machine eliminates 99.9% of bacteria on floors. A special brush roll helps prevent pet hair from getting tangled up in the machine, and light-emitting diode (LED) headlights help you see what parts of the floor still need your attention.

This wet/dry vac comes with two 8-ounce bottles of cleaning solutions (the hard floor sanitize Ffrmula and pet multi-surface formula) so you can put your machine to work right away. It also includes an 8-ounce bottle of Clean Out to use when running the CrossWave’s self-cleaning cycle, and an additional pet multi-surface brush roll and two CrossWave replacement filters.

How We Tested It

Using vaccum to clean wooden floor

To test the Bissell CrossWave HydrosSeam Plus, I used it in a house that had a variety of surfaces to clean, and a wide variety of pet messes from three dogs and six cats. While it did an outstanding job of cleaning up the accidents of a potty-training puppy, where it really wowed me was how it performed in the areas around cat litter boxes. Many carpet cleaning machines can leave something to be desired in the suction department, but the Bissell CrossWave HydroSteam Plus quickly picks up clay cat litter without leaving a trace behind. If it can make heavy cat litter disappear, you can imagine what it does to daily dirt and debris!

One of my favorite features of this unit is that you can dispense cleaning solution only as needed by using the trigger mechanism on the handle. This allows you to easily suck up messes, like pet urine or kitchen spills, without adding more liquid to the problem, preventing you from spreading it further. Once the liquid is removed, it only takes a few passes with cleaning solution and steam to fully remove any trace of the mess, including odors. This is also beneficial when cleaning up areas around litter boxes, since it won’t saturate any clay particles or dust and end up making a bigger mess.

Another thing I love is the large cleaning tank, which is easy to fill and has excellent visual indicators for adding cleaning solution. And because it only dispenses water and cleaning products as needed, you can steam clean the floors in multiple rooms without needing to continually stop to refill. However, as you move from room to room, you’ll need to find a new place to plug in your machine, as it’s not a cordless model. While this is a small annoyance, it’s ultimately for the best, as the Bissell CrossWave HydroSteam Plus wouldn’t be able to deliver the horsepower needed to clean as well as it does on a cordless battery. That extra horsepower also means this machine is noisier than weaker models on the market, but not overwhelmingly so.

Pros

  • Incredible cleaning power
  • Easy to operate
  • Eliminates messes quickly and thoroughly
  • Works spectacularly on old messes and stubborn stains
  • Lights on the front help ensure you don’t miss a single spot
  • Large cleaning tank with easy-to-read instructions

Cons

  • On the pricey side (but it is a vacuum and steam cleaner in one!)
  • Heavier than other models at 12.5 pounds

FAQ

How long does it take carpet to dry after using the Bissell CrossWave HydroSteam Plus?

The Bissell CrossWave HydroSteam Plus is not meant for cleaning carpets; it’s designed to be used on tile, sealed wood floors, laminate, linoleum, rubber floor mats, pressed wood floors and other flat surfaces, which dry in a matter of minutes (or even seconds!) after cleaning. While it can’t tackle high-pile carpets, it can be used to clean area rugs, runners and low-pile carpets, which will dry quickly in a warm, well-ventilated room.

What Other Reviewers Had to Say

The Bissell CrossWave HydroSteam Plus has earned nearly 500 five-star ratings on Amazon alone. Here’s what real-life users are saying about it:

Verified purchaser, M. Lee, raves, “I’ve tried several products for hardware floors and they’ve all left a residue that seemed to attract even more dirt. This product is amazing! On top of efficiency, vacuum and clean at the same time, it totally conquered a husky pet hair problem with ease. My heavy-duty entryway rugs were cleaned in a few minutesthe dirt and debris this little unit picked up was mind blowing. I am so impressed with this unit. On top of it, when finished cleaning it has a clean-up tray that cleans up the dirty roller for next time. This product is amazing. No more dirty pet hair floors!! Yay!!”

Five-star reviewer, Sam, purchased this product for his “bustling homestead” of dogs, cats, children, chickens, goats and cows. “This all-in-one machine, combining vacuuming, mopping and steam features, has proven to be a monumental time saver, leaving our floors impeccably clean,” he says. “The self-clean mode is particularly impressive, as it effectively prevents animal hair from clogging or tangling around the mop head. In fact, I found this product so effective that I decided to part ways with two other floor-cleaning machines since it excels in performing all their functions.”

“This is by far the best purchase that a dog owner can do,” writes another five-star reviewer, Micaela Seoane. “I’ve been struggling with keeping my floors clean and free of hair of three big-sized dogs for years.” she says. “In 20 minutes, my floors are sparkling and smelling so good. It is extremely easy to use; not heavy at all. I am not a friend of vacuums with a cord, but this one right here [is] worth it. The suction power is great.”

Product Comparison

The Bissell CrossWave HydroSteam Plus is your best option for non-carpeted floors and low-pile rugs. Even though it doesn’t have the word “pet” in its name, it’s still dynamite at cleaning up pet messes! Meanwhile, the Bissell Revolution HydroSteam pet carpet cleaner is specifically designed for carpets, and is able to remove deeply saturated messes and stubborn stains that have penetrated carpet fibers.

Final Verdict

Before and After of floor side by side

The Bissell CrossWave HydroSteam Plus is a miracle when it comes to cleaning up messes. Though it’s not the cheapest wet/dry cleaner on the market, its high horsepower, strong suction and stain-destroying abilities make it well worth the price.

The Dyson Outsize Plus Eliminates Pet Hair From Every Corner of My House https://www.familyhandyman.com/article/dyson-outsize-plus-vacuum/ Mon, 27 Nov 2023 17:28:22 +0000 The Dyson Outsize Plus vacuum is the one-stop shop for powerfully eliminating pet hair from every surface and corner of your home.

The post The Dyson Outsize Plus Eliminates Pet Hair From Every Corner of My House appeared first on Family Handyman.

]]>
As a dog owner, I know that pet hair is unavoidable. But for the longest time I tried to fight it. I purchased a dog couch cover and had a designated dog bed in just about every room of my house for my pit bull, Ernie. If he stayed in those specified places, his dog fur would too, right? But no, his shedding hair was not privy to my plans, and it sprinkled itself across the floor, carpet, furniture and every other nook of my home.

No matter where I stepped or sat, I ended up covered in pet hair, as well. I purchased multiple products that promised to eliminate pet hair from the home and remove pet hair from clothes. And despite purchasing a dog hammock, my car was not safe, eitherErnie’s hair still coated the side doors and weaved into the car upholstery.

My home was becoming infested with dog fur quicker than I could tackle it, and I knew I needed to find a tool to help me work smarter, not harder. Enter the Dyson Outsize Plus. This powerful cordless stick vacuum suctions pet hair and dirt from carpets and hardwood floors in record time. But Dyson knows the pet hair doesn’t stop there, and it doesn’t either. So whether you’re eyeing that fur-laden couch or that hard-to-reach nook, the Dyson Outsize Plus comes equipped with numerous pet hair removal accessories that’ll have you saying, “Yep, I’ve got a vacuum attachment for that.”

After months of testing the Dyson Outsize Plus in every area of my fur-covered home (and vehicle), here’s how it measured up.

What is the Dyson Outsize Plus vacuum?

Dyson Outsize Plus laser

As Dyson’s largest cordless stick vacuum, the Dyson Outsize Plus is an intelligent machine for deep cleaning homes. It features high suctioning power for pulling hair and dirt, and laser beam technology for capturing the tiniest of dust particles. It boasts a larger cleaning head and larger bin than previous models, so you can tackle more surface area with each sweepand without having to stop to empty the vacuum.

The Dyson Outsize can be purchased in two versionsthe original and the Plus version. While both vacuums are the same, the original only comes with one head and three accessory attachments while the Plus comes with two heads and five attachments. For this review, I’ll be covering the Dyson Outsize Plus and its full line of attachments.

We Tried It

Dyson Outsize Plus

Featuring a 150% larger bin, a 25% wider cleaner head and seven hair removal accessories, the latest Dyson vacuum tackles pet hair like never before.

Dyson Outsize Plus Vacuum Features

Dyson Outsize Plus unboxed on floor

Heres an in-depth look at the most notable features of the Dyson Outsize Plus:

Powerful Suction

The Dyson Outsize Plus features a Hyperdymium motor, which spins at 125,000 revolutions per minute (RPM) to create a strikingly powerful suction (carpet-weaved pet hair doesn’t stand a chance!). For comparison, this is 90% more powerful than Dyson’s V8 vacuum. As if that wasn’t enough, the vacuum features Radial Root Cyclone technology (18 cyclones in total) to forcefully pull dust into the bin without clogging the filter.

To operate the vacuum, users must hold down the power button continuously. While the suction is impressive, holding the button can be uncomfortable for some. Additionally, the vacuum is noisy on higher settings, which may bother users who are sensitive to sound. Taking short breaks can help alleviate fatigue from button holding or noise sensitivity.

De-Tangling Technology

Dyson’s Digital Motorbar XL cleaner head features de-tangling hair removal vanes that automatically clear both human hair and pet hair from the brush bar. No more breaking out the scissors every time your vacuum gets wrapped up in hair!

Adjustable Cleaning Modes with DLS Detection

The Digital Motorbar XL features three cleaning modes that can be adjusted at the touch of a button. Select Auto mode to enable Dyson’s DLS technology to intelligently optimize suction and runtime, depending on debris level and floor type detection. Eco mode provides maximum runtime for longer cleans, and Boost mode utilizes more power to provide intensive spot leaning.

The Dyson-engineered head conveniently and effectively transitions between thick carpets and hard floors. Its tiff nylon bristles drive deep into carpets to pull out dirt and hair while carbon fiber filaments capture everything from fur to fine dust on hard floors.

Laser Detection for Tiny Particles

The Dyson Outsize Plus comes equipped with a second vacuum headthe Laser Slim Fluffy cleaner. Featuring an angled green laser, it visibly highlights hard-to-see dust particles on hard floors so you don’t miss a thing.

Larger Bin and Wider Sweeper Head

This model features a mighty 0.5 gallon bin, which is 150% larger than that of the Dyson v11 model (and 250% larger than their v8 model), allowing you to clean longer without emptying. Compared to the v11, the Dyson Outsize Plus also has a larger sweeping head, allowing you to cover 25% more surface with each sweep.

Advanced Filtration

Dyson’s six-layer high-efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filtration traps 99.99% of particles as tiny as 0.3 microns (m), delivering cleaner air with each sweep. The filter is washable (Dyson recommends once a month), meaning you won’t have to worry about purchasing replacements.

Regular maintenance of the HEPA filter and brush rolls is essential for optimal performance. The filters require monthly cleaning, and although the anti-tangle brush roll handles hair well, manual removal of tangled hair may occasionally be necessary.

Two Rechargeable Batteries

Thanks to Dysons power-optimization technology, the rechargeable battery provides up to 60 minutes of runtime, and Dyson includes two batteries, offering a total of 120 minutes of uninterrupted cordless cleaning. The vacuum also features a wall-mounted docking station for easy charging and storage.

While the dual battery system delivers impressive runtime, it adds to the vacuums weight, which can be problematic since, as a stick vacuum, it cannot stand on its own. This extra weight may lead to arm fatigue during extended cleaning sessions, especially in larger homes. Additionally, the wall-mounted dock doesnt hold all attachments, which can complicate storage.

Intelligent LED Display

The Outsize Plus comes equipped with a digital display that provides remaining battery life down to the second. With this screen you can also select your cleaning mode and receive maintenance alerts.

Point and Shoot Bin Emptying

For when that 0.5 gallon bin does finally get full, the Dyson Outsize Plus features point-and-shoot hygienic bin emptying, meaning you won’t need to get your hands involved outside of pressing the convenient release lever.

Two-Year Warranty

The Dyson Outsize Plus comes with a two-year warranty for parts and labor, as well as a lifetime of support.

How We Tested It

When I went to unbox my Dyson Outsize Plus, I was initially a little overwhelmed by the number of parts. Once I separated out the docking and charging pieces away from the actual vacuuming components, I was ready to begin (and eager to see how each accessory was about to change my fur-filled life for the better). While the vacuum came with a partial charge, it was advised that I charge the battery fully before getting started.

Carpet

 Dyson Outsize Plus cleaning carpet

I first utilized the Digital Motorbar XL cleaning head on the fur-loaded carpet. I’ll be honest, I’ve used many of the best vacuums in my day, but you could truly feel the suctioning power behind this machine (and actually seeing the fur effortlessly pulling into the bin was proof).

One thing I noticed almost immediately was that you must hold the power button down to operate the Outsize Plussomething I wasn’t used to with my previous vacuum. But this didn’t discourage me one bit, as I was already off vacuuming the hallway and the top of the stairs. I even vacuumed low-traffic areas where I didn’t think I’d have much luck, but the Dyson Outsize proved me wrong. I watched in awe (and horror) as the bin filled with hair and dirt that had been deeply set into the carpet. To an outsider, it probably looked like I’d never vacuumed before, but the Dyson Outsize Plus was simply unearthing what no other vacuum could do before.

Hard Floors

I next moved to the hardwood floors, which in my house, are covered with fur on the daily. I typically use a compact cordless stick vacuum for the job, as it’s easy to pull out at a moment’s notice. And until now, I thought it was all I needed. But the Dyson Outsize Plus brought convenience to a whole new level. The wide vacuum head was able to cover so much more surface area in half the time. And thanks to it’s slim, stick design, it’s still able to maneuver under my bed, table and other tight areas.

 Dyson Outsize cleaning wooden floor

While my floors looked immaculate and free of hair, dirt and dog toy remnants, I attached the Laser Fluffy head cleaner to see what all the fuss was about. I felt like a character out of Ghostbusters as the green laser beam illuminated tiny dust particles and sucked them up before my very own eyes. Between both cleaning heads, I could tell my home was getting a deep cleaning like never before (and Ernie agreed).

While cleaning, I will admit that my arm did get tired from the weight of the vacuum. And unlike my current vacuum, there was no way to stand it upright in between breaksyou have to lay it down or prop it up against the wall. But while the Outsize Plus is heavier than other cordless, stick vacuums, I feel its a fair trade-off in exchange for a powerful suctioning vacuum that picks up more hair andneeds emptied less often.

Furniture

Dyson Outsize cleaning couch

I next utilized the Hair Screw Tool attachment to tackle the dog hair on my couch. Because I no longer needed to reach far down to the floor, I was able to eliminate the stick extender and hook the attachment directly to the vacuum body. Although the Hair Screw might be small, it sure is mighty. It powerfully, yet gently, gripped my sofa, pulling every last dog hair up. Just like the Digital Motorbar XL, the Hair Screw Tool features an anti-tangle brush to quickly clear human and pet hair from smaller spaces. I even used it on Ernie’s dog bed and it worked like a charm.

Dyson Outsize Plus dog bed before and after

Car

Dyson Outsize Plus car before and after

Next, I tested out a combination of attachments on my car’s interior and determined that the Hair Screw and Crevice tools were the two best suited for the job. The Hair Screw Tool gently gripped to the dog hammock, suctioning up pet hair along the way, and the Crevice Tool eliminated pet hair from every crack and crevice of the seats and floor mats underneath.

 Dyson Outsize Dog Hammock

Because the bin is so large, I found it a bit difficult to maneuver in tight areas of my vehicle, no matter how small the attachments were. And I also did not find any of the attachments to be successful (perhaps if I use a pet carpet rake first to loosen the fur, that would have worked better).

Dyson Outsize Empty Bin

When it came time to empty the bin, all I had to do was pull the red release lever and everything emptied into the trash. No need to get my hands dirty or coax any stubborn debris outit simply took care of it all.

Despite all the powerful cleaning, I was impressed to find that the Dyson still had ample battery life left. And during my months of testing, there was one instance where I forgot to charge the vacuum in between, and was amazed to find that it was still carrying about 15 minutes of charge!

Pros

  • Cordless design and powerful suction
  • Extra-large head deep
  • Works on carpets and hard floors
  • De-tangling vanes prevent hair from catching on brush
  • Two rechargeable batteries
  • 0.5-gallon canister
  • Multiple attachments
  • Laser-beam technology on Laser Slim Fluffy attachment head
  • Smart technology detects floor type
  • Smart display shows remaining runtime and power modes
  • Two-year warranty for parts and labor (and lifetime support from Dyson)

Cons

  • Must continuously hold power button in order for vacuum to run
  • Weighs about 17.5 pounds

FAQ

Is Dyson Outsize the same as V15?

No. While they share similarities in appearance and some features, the Dyson Outsize has a 150% larger bin and a 25% wider cleaner head compared to the V15. However, the Outsize is bulkier and heavier. While the added capacity and longer runtime are advantages, the increased size and weight may cause fatigue for some users, who might prefer a smaller model.

What year did the Dyson Outsize come out?

The original Dyson Outsize was launched in 2020 and has since been improved into the Outsize Plus.

Can the Dyson Outsize be used on carpet?

Yes. It automatically adjusts to the surface. According to Dyson, “In Auto mode, Dyson DLS (Dynamic Load Sensor) technology inside the High Torque cleaner head monitors brush bar resistance 360 times a second, automatically adjusting power across floor types.”

Product Comparison: Dyson Outsize Plus vs. Dyson v11

Dyson Outsize Plus Comparison

While both cordless vacuums are engineered for homes with pets, the Dyson Outsize Plus has a 125% larger bin and 25% wider cleaner head than the Dyson V11. Currently on the Dyson website, the Outsize Plus is priced at $599.99 while the V11 is priced slightly lower at $569.99. While the v11 comes with just four attachments, you can splurge for the V11 Extra which comes with 11 attachments (which is four more than what comes packaged with the Dyson Outsize Plus). However, neither versions of the v11 come with the Laser Fluffy head cleaner.

Final Verdict

Overall, I was extremely impressed with the Dyson Outsize Plus. Between cleaning my carpets, floors, furniture and car, it truly is a full service hair removal machine. It’s one of those vacuums that you don’t realize you need until you experience its power and witness the slack it picks up from previous vacuum attempts. The charging docking station and plethora of attachments means I’m now equipped for any hair removal task, no matter how great or small.

Because it has a larger bin that makes it rather top heavy, there are times that the Outsize Plus feels rather fragile. But when you have a hair-fighting machine like this one, you’ll want to protect it at all costs (especially since the price isn’t cheap!). While I can confidently say this vacuum is well worth the investment, Dyson does offer a payment plan through Afterpay for those on a tighter budget.

This vacuum would be the ultimate hair removal dream for any pet owner, but I do feel it was designed for a larger pet home due to its wider cleaning head, greater bin size, various accessories and extended battery life. For smaller apartment dwellers, I would recommend one of these best vacuums for apartmentsinstead.

Pet hair is nothing new for dog owners. On a daily basis, our furry family members lovingly scatter so much of their hair across our floors, furniture and clothes it’s a wonder they still have any attached to their bodies. While there are pet hair vacuums for floors, rakes for carpets and hair removal tools for clothes, wouldn’t it be great if we could nip the majority of shedding directly at the source? That’s when I came across the Hicozy dog grooming vacuum.

This two-in-one grooming and vacuuming machine brushes and trims your pet while collecting all the loose fur in the process. I wondered, was it possible for this tool to proactively de-shed and suction my dog’s fur instead of having it coat everything in sight? I had to see for myself.

What is the Hicozy dog grooming vacuum?

Dog Hair brush and other equipment on couch

Unlike regular dog grooming tools or a pet deshedding brush, the Hicozy dog grooming machine is attached to a vacuum to suction up hair as you go. It comes equipped with six professional pet grooming tools to help you groom and trim all within the comfort of your own home. And the best part? No mess to clean up afterward.

The Hicozy dog vacuum comes equipped with the following accessories (and a storage rack to hold them all):

  • Slicker brush: helps smooth tangled hair and collect loose fur
  • De-shed brush: helps shed your dog’s undercoat
  • Electric trimmer (plus five guard combs and trimmer brush): to trim overgrown hair around the face, body and tail
  • Scissors: To manually trim excess hair around ears and between toes
  • Nozzle brush: post-grooming cleaning tool to suction loose pet hair from floor and hard surfaces
  • Cleaning brush: another cleaning tool to tackle pet hair by brushing and suctioning it off furniture and clothing

Hicozy Dog Grooming Vacuum

Brush, trim and suction all at once with this dog grooming vacuum, providing your pup with a mess-free grooming experience.

Hicozy Dog Grooming Vacuum Features

Parts of Dog brush kept on chair

The Hicozy dog grooming vacuum is a full-service grooming and suctioning machine. Here are its most notable features:

Two-in-One Dog Grooming Vacuum

Brush, detangle, de-shed and trim your pupall while vacuuming the hair away. The suctioning power pulls up loose fur while grooming your pup, and there’s no need for cleanup!

Powerful Suction

The dog grooming vacuum features a 300-watt, high-powered motor that reaches a suctioning power of up to 1.74 pounds per square inch (psi). The motor also comes equipped with a high-efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filter that clears 99% of hair, resulting in less pet fur scattered across the floor, carpet and furniture.

One-Click Release Button

The deshedding tool and slicker brush feature a release button that conveniently pulls the hair up and out so that it can be suctioned into the vacuum. No need to manually pull it offthe button does the job for you so you can get back to work!

Pet-Friendly Cozy Mode

Hicozy S1+ Pet Grooming Vacuum

Hicozy knows that grooming can be an uncomfortable experience for your pet. That’s why it included a “Cozy Mode” setting, which gradually powers up the vacuum over a duration of five minutes to calm anxious pups and avoid stress. If your pup is well acclimated, you can skip this mode and click the power button once more for a low suction, and twice more for a higher suction.

2-Liter Dust Cup

hair in transparent bin container

The large, 2-liter capacity dust cup means more grooming and less dumping. And a convenient button under the dust cup allows you to dispose all fur into the trash with just one click. For larger or double-coated breed owners, vacuums with higher tank capacities, such as the Hicozy, are essential due to the significant volume of fur these dogs shed. Its 2-liter tank can accommodate more fur, reducing the need for frequent emptying during grooming sessions.

Easy Storage

Cord Storage space

The vacuum includes a storage plate for all grooming accessories, as well as a convenient place to house the cord underneath the machine when not in use.

How We Tested It

I tested the Hicozy dog grooming vacuum on two dogs: a larger, short-haired pit bull and a smaller, long-haired papillon. I wanted to see how the grooming accessories performed on varying hair lengths, as well as assess ease of maneuverability of the tools on different dog sizes. Plus, my pit bull doesn’t need a cut by any means, so I wanted to be able to test the trimmer on a pup that does.

If you want to give your dog the full spa experience, you could give him a bath first. While I skipped this step, I highly recommend the Aquapaw Pro.

Short-Haired Dog

I first tested the grooming vacuum on my pit bull, Ernie. Although he has short fur, he sheds like a maniac, and I was eager to see whether the vacuum would help suction up some of his excess hair. The video tutorial on Amazon suggests brushing your dog with the slicker brush first without the vacuum running to acclimate your dog, so that’s exactly what I did.

Next, I pushed the “Cozy Mode” button, and the vacuum let out a low, gentle sound that’s similar to white noise. While the vacuum is in this mode, it’s not suctioning at all, but simply easing your dog into the sound of the stronger vacuum settings.

With the vacuum at a low suction, I continued brushing Ernie with the slicker brush. The sound made him a little uneasy at first, but as I continued brushing him, he seemed to find it relaxing. While the brush picked up some fur, it wasn’t as much as I’d hoped. But to be fair, most pet brushes I’ve tried in the past provided similar results. Even at the low setting, I could tell the suctioning power was strong, but the brush just wasn’t able to grasp anything for it to suck up.

Dog and Brush side by side

I next moved onto the deshedding brush and found it also failed at grasping much of Ernie’s fur. Since the remaining accessories were for hair trimming, it was time to move onto my next furry client.

Dog and dog hair trimmer

Long-Haired Dog

I next tested the dog grooming vacuum on my sister’s papillon, Charlie. I followed the same testing method, but because her pup is a little more skittish than Ernie, some coaxing dog treats were in order. I was worried the tools might be too large for her small body, but they worked just fine!

Dog and Brush side by side

With the slicker brush, I was amazed to see how effective it was at grabbing loose hair while smoothing out Charlie’s long coat in the process. And each time the brush collected a tiny heap of fur, I was able to clear it into the suctioning tube with just a click of a button. I next utilized the deshedding tool and found that it also was able to gently pull a generous amount of hair from Charlie that she would have otherwise shed all over my sister’s home.

Dog and the brush on side

Throughout the grooming, Charlie actually seemed to enjoy herself! Once the initial concern of the noise passed, I think both dogs associated the machine with a relaxing massage. In fact, while Hicozy recommends leashing your dog to keep them in place, neither Ernie nor Charlie needed to be restrainedthey were willing participants!

Next, I used the hair trimmer to tidy up some overgrown hair around her ears and tail. For this part, I utilized an extra set of hands from my sister, as this is a more delicate process that requires some extra care and caution. It helped to have an extra hand to pull the hair straight and away from her body when cutting for extra precision. And in a matter of minutes, Charlie was cleaning up nicely (and forgoing all future grooming appointments)!

Cleaning Tools

Lastly, I put the two cleaning tools to work. While the vacuum sucks up the majority of hair as you go, your dog will naturally shed wherever you have them stationed (which in Charlie’s case was atop a towel on the dining room table). I was impressed at how well the cleaning brush worked to pull all of the hair off with ease! And the nozzle was an added bonus for suctioning anything that made its way down to the hardwood floors below.

Brushing the towel

Pros

  • At-home, professional-grade grooming kit
  • Saves money on grooming appointments and prevents unnecessary stress on your pup
  • All grooming tools were effective on our long-haired dog (and she even seemed to enjoy it!)
  • Vacuum suctions up pet hair as you work
  • Proactively de-sheds dog and catches loose hairs
  • Large bin is easy to empty
  • Cozy mode helps dog acclimate to vacuum sound
  • Includes post-groom cleaning tools

Cons

  • Wasn’t effective at deshedding my short-haired dog
  • Requires a learning curve (and likely another set of hands)
  • Not cordless
  • The noise might scare some dogs

FAQ

Do dog grooming vacuums really work?

Absolutely! For heavy-shedding breeds, grooming vacuums significantly improve the cleanliness of your home, making it more hypoallergenic by effectively managing pet hair.

Can I use a vacuum to deshed my dog?

Yes, you can use a regular vacuum to de-shed your dog by purchasing specialized grooming attachments. These tools feature special brushes designed to de-shed your dog while ensuring its comfort.

What do dog groomers use to keep dogs still?

Professional dog groomers combine calm and gentle tones, patience and rewards to help their canine clients stay still. For more wriggly dogs, some groomers use a grooming noose or other restraints for added control.

Do dog grooming vacuums work on short hair dogs?

It depends on the breed. While the Hicozy vacuum may not perform as effectively on short-haired dogs, various attachments designed for different coats and breeds can enhance its performance, so it’s worth experimenting to see what works best for your dog.

Product Comparison

If you’re unsure about investing in specialized grooming equipment, you can use general vacuum or forced-air tools, like a leaf blower, for quick fur removal. This method effectively blows out loose fur before vacuuming, making it especially beneficial for heavy-shedding breeds. Combining these tools can enhance your ability to remove large amounts of fur and minimize buildup around the house.

Additionally, various attachments are compatible with household vacuums, allowing you to groom your pets without a significant investment if you already own a high-powered vacuum. However, consider the noise levels for anxious pets. If your household vacuum lacks adjustable suction settings and lower decibel levels, it may be wise to invest in a dedicated grooming vacuum, such as the Hicozy, designed with pet comfort in mind.

Final Verdict

Overall, this dog grooming vacuum was a hit with our long-haired papillon! Not only were the tools effective at detangling, smoothing, deshedding, trimming and trapping Charlie’s fur, but she wasn’t afraid of the vacuum. She found the process rather relaxingand let’s be honest, that’s really half the battle. In fact, while testing the vacuum on Ernie once more, she came back and was hoping for a second turn!

With the Hicozy dog grooming vacuum, you can ditch scheduling those costly grooming appointments and provide more routine grooming maintenance before things get too out of hand. Plus, the deshedding tool helps to keep that frequent hair shedding problem at bay.

Brushing a Dog and other dog watching

While I had unrealistic expectations of the vacuum working on my master shedder, Ernie, I can’t blame the Hicozy, as I have yet to find any tool that pulls loose hair directly from his short coat. For that reason, I would only recommend the Hicozy dog grooming vacuum for long-haired dogs. For everyone else, we’ll have to invest in one of these products that remove shedding hair around the home.

Bathing my 50-pound pit bull, Ernie is a backyard activity that neither he nor I look forward to. The act alone requires more hands than I physically have available to bathe him, man the hose, grab the soap and keep him from cutting his bath time short. Having to choose between avoiding water run-off or my dog running off, I always choose the latter and end up with a puddle of water and a lot of mess. If there was a way to bathe my dog without having to take a bath myself, I was all ears.

That’s when I heard about the Aquapaw Pro. Featured on ABC’s Shark Tank, this pet bathing tool features a sprayer and scrubber in one, helping you do more with fewer hands. The selling point for me is the on/off button feature, meaning no more running back and forth from the hose (or worse, water pooling at my feet). If the Aquapaw Pro showed promise of making bath time less messy and more efficient, I knew I had to try it (which meant Ernie inevitably had to try it, too).

What is the Aquapaw Pro?

Ariel View of Aquapaw with Box

The Aquapaw Pro is a multifunctional grooming tool for dogs. It slides comfortably over your hand and combines four functions into one innovative tool at your fingertipsscrubber, bathing brush, massager and shower. So whether your dog needs a deep scrub after a romp in the mud or a more soothing massage and rinse to ease anxious nerves, the Aquapaw Pro has you covered.

The Aquapaw Pro easily connects to your backyard garden hose or indoor shower head, accommodating bath time for dogs of all sizes and fur lengths. Featuring an on/off button and adjustable low/high water settings, you can cater to your pup’s comfort levels and bathing needs while preventing water waste and unnecessary mess.

We Tried It

Aquapaw Pro

This combination sprayer/scrubber prevents water waste and mess while providing a more enjoyable bathing experience for both you and your dog.

Aquapaw Pro Features

Heres an in-depth look at the most notable features of the Aquapaw Pro pet bathing tool.

Multifunctional Tool

The Aquapaw Pro combines a pet brush, scrubber, massager and shower in oneallowing you to brush and rinse with the same hand at the same time. In contrast to a hose and your fingertips, the scrubber brush and pressurized water jets of the Aquapaw Pro provide a deeper clean in less time.

Ergonomic Design

All four sides of Aquapaw

Featuring 100% premium silicone, the scrubber is not only gentle on your pup, it’s flexible on your palm and durable enough to withstand many years of use. The scrubber’s long nubs help to massage dog coats of all lengths and thicknesses, and a one-size-fits-all adjustable strap snugly grips your hand while providing easy access to the on/off button and adjustable pressure settings.

On/Off Button

My favorite feature is the on/off button. At the click of a button, you can conveniently turn on and shut off the flow of water when needed. No more unnecessary water run-off while you suds up your dog in between rinses or when you attempt to dry him off at the end of bath time.

Adjustable Pressure Settings

Low and High Pressure of Aquapaw side by side

The on/off button also serves as a pressure adjustor to cater to your pup’s comfort level. Once on, it defaults to a gentle rinse, perfect for sensitive areas like the face and ears. Click it once more, and the water will come out as a more powerful rinse, helping to get out tough dirt or strong odors.

Easy Installation

The Aquapaw Pro features a strong, flexible eight-foot hose with two adapters that connect to your outdoor garden hose or indoor shower head. So, whether you need to bathe your pup inside or out, you’re covered.

How We Tested It

I unboxed the Aquapaw Pro to find four parts: The bathing brush connected to the eight-foot hose, a shower head adapter and two garden hose adapters (one for North American garden hoses and another for international garden hoses). Because I’ll be bathing Ernie outside (and I’m lucky to live in Arizona, where I can bathe him outdoors all year long), I only needed two of the four parts to get started.

 Aquapaw Unboxed Aerial view

The setup was extremely quick, and the instructions were simple to followexcept for one tiny hiccup. There is a tiny plastic gray piece that needs to come out of the hose adaptor (which wasn’t initially apparent, and the instructions did not mention it). Without removing it, the hose and adaptor won’t connect. But once I got that sorted, everything else was a breeze.

Grey Plastic of Aquapaw Pipe

Once I turned the hose on, I appreciated that the water did not start coming out full force, thanks to the on/off button of the Aquapaw Pro. Instead, I was able to wait until I had Ernie positioned and ready before clicking the “on” button and starting his rinse. And when I needed to lather him up with soap, I was able to conveniently click the “off” button until it was time to rinse again.

I noticed that when the Aquapaw Pro was in the “off” position, the hose pressure would build up and cause a small leak at the adapter connecting point and at the hose switch at the wall (which is to be expected due to the force of gravity and the fact that the running water has nowhere to go), but it was nowhere near as much water run-off as I’d previously experienced from a running hose.

 Aquapaw Pipe on ground

Although bath time took Ernie away from backyard lizard hunting, once I started to massage his fur with the Aquapaw Pro brush, he didn’t seem to mind. In fact, the brush/rinse combo provided a gentler way of easing him into bath timesomething that the regular garden hose was never capable of achieving.

Dog Ernie Bathing outside

Because Ernie has sensitive skin, I use Burt’s Bees hypoallergenic shampoo for dogs. The brush helped to really massage the shampoo evenly into his fur. Previously, I used my hands to try and rub it in, but the brush does a much better job.

Ariel vie of dog bathing

When it came time to rinse, I liked being able to control the pressure for washing around his face (and he seemed to appreciate that, too). In the past, I would just form a kink in the hose to lower the pressure, and frankly, Ernie deserves a better spa experience than that.

Rinsing the dog outside

As bath time came to an end, the “off” switch came in handy yet again. As most dog owners can attest, our wet pups have a natural urge to roll around in dirt. So, the window of opportunity for toweling your pup off and getting them back in the house before they do so is very small. Having the convenience of the “off” button allowed me to do so without worrying about a running hose.

Pros

  • Scrubber/rinse combo allows you to clean more efficiently and effectively
  • On/off button means less water waste and less mess
  • Pressure adjustor settings allow you to switch between rinsing sensitive areas
  • 100% silicone material is flexible, gentle and durable
  • Adjustable strap is one-size-fits-all
  • Compatible with outdoor hose and indoor shower head
  • Shower adapter has nook for hanging bathing tool
  • Helps to remove shedding dog fur
  • Provides a more relaxing bath experience for you and your dog

Cons

  • Some water still leaks when set to “off” position
  • When connected to the shower head adapter, you cannot use the regular shower head at the same time

Aquapaw vs. Aquapaw Pro

Aquapaw vs Aquapaw pro

Aquapaw is available in two versions: The original Aquapaw and the Aquapaw Pro (which I tested in this review). While both versions share many of the same features, here is how they differ:

  • Size: The original Aquapaw is smaller, covering up just the palm of your hand. It is better suited for cats and small dogs, while the Pro version caters toward larger dogs.
  • Brush nub length: The brush nubs on the original are shorter, while the Pro has longer nubs to accommodate thicker coats.
  • On/off setting: While the Aquapaw Pro features an on/off button, the original Aquapaw is turned on and off with a squeeze of a fist.
  • Adjustable water pressure: Unlike the Aquapaw Pro, the original Aquapaw does not come with adjustable water pressure settings.
  • Price: The original Aquapaw is about half the price of the Aquapaw Pro.

Final Verdict

Dog wearing robe and watching outside window

The Aquapaw Pro was a win in both my and Ernie’s book. Not only did it cut down on water waste and hassle, it actually seemed to provide a relaxing experience that my dog enjoyed. And now that I’ve used the bathing tool’s shampoo massaging brush and pressurized rinse a handful of times, I’ve realized that all of Ernie’s previous baths were subpar.

Whether you bathe your dog out back or in the bathtub, the Aquapaw Pro provides the ultimate dog washing station. And thanks to Aquapaw Pro making bath time more quick and efficient, Ernie was back to thinking about lizards in no time (dog bathrobe not included).

Where to Buy the Aquapaw Pro

You can purchase the Aquapaw Pro for around $45 from a variety of merchants including Amazon, Chewy, and Walmart.

We Compared Hoover vs. Bissell Carpet Cleaners for Pet Stains—Here’s How to Choose https://www.familyhandyman.com/article/hoover-vs-bissell-carpet-cleaner/ Wed, 08 Nov 2023 16:32:29 +0000 Hoover vs. Bissell carpet cleaners: We take a deeper look into the two best carpet cleaner brands on the market for pet messes.

The post We Compared Hoover vs. Bissell Carpet Cleaners for Pet Stains—Here’s How to Choose appeared first on Family Handyman.

]]>
If you’re a pet owner, a powerful carpet cleaning machine is a must-have accessory. Investing a little bit of cash into one of the best pet cleaning gadgets can save you even more money and heartache by removing pet stainsincluding urine, vomit and fecesfrom your carpet and upholstered surfaces, and restoring them to their pre-pet-mess perfection.

“Tackling pet messes as fast as possible is the key to getting clean carpets,” says Andrew Halton, director of customer success at Rugs.com. When spot cleaning and vacuuming aren’t enough to clean a pet mess, opt for a carpet cleaning machine that’s easy to use. “If you have a pet, a mess is bound to happen. Be sure to invest in a top carpet cleaner, because having it on hand when you need it most is one of the keys to having clean carpets,” he continues.

When it comes to purchasing pet cleaners, the Hoover vs. Bissell carpet cleaner debate usually comes up. Both brands are known to make some of the most effective and high-quality carpet cleaners on the market.

What’s the difference between Hoover and Bissell carpet cleaners?

When it comes to the Hoover vs. Bissell carpet cleaner debate, know that both brands make carpet cleaners specifically for pet owners. According to Halton, Hoover carpet cleaners are generally known for their advanced cleaning technologies, which help to remove tough stains and odors. “They also offer a variety of models at different price points, making it easier to find a model that fits your budget,” he says. Bissell carpet cleaners are known for their durability and reliability. “They offer a range of models with advanced features that help to remove tough stains and dirt,” Halton adds.

All About Hoover Carpet Cleaners

Hoover has a lot of great carpet cleaners and vacuums, explain Halton. “Be sure to read the fine print and choose the right Hoover for your needs since they offer many options,” he says. Since pet stains can be challenging to clean, he recommends finding a Hoover designed to handle these messes.

Hoover makes a variety of carpet cleaners for pet owners, including larger, stand-up models, like the Hoover SmartWash Automatic Carpet Cleaner with Spot Chaser Stain Remover Wand, the Hoover Smartwash Automatic Carpet Cleaner and the Hoover Power Scrub Deluxe Pet Carpet Cleaner.

The brand also makes portable carpet cleaners for pet owners, like the Hoover CleanSlate Plus Carpet & Upholstery Spot Cleaner and the ONEPWER CleanSlate Cordless Spot Cleaner & Pet Solution.

Products purchased from Hoover may be returned for credit within 30 days from the date of purchase, according to the brand’s website. As for warranties, they vary by the product.

Our Favorite Hoover Carpet Cleaner

“It features a brush system that spins and gently scrubs carpets, and includes a heat feature to help speed the drying process so that more dirt doesn’t become trapped in the carpet fibers,” he says. Since it shampoos your carpet, it’ll also tackle smells left behind from pet messes; and for serious pet messes, including getting urine out of carpet, there is a deep-clean option. Plus, It’s relatively lightweight, easy to use and easy to assemble.

Amazon reviewers agree, with over 6,300 shoppers offering up a perfect five-star rating for the cleaning machine. “I love this cleaner!” shares Shana, a five-star reviewer. “It got up red wine, an old coffee stain (don’t judge me) and the general dog detritus and associated smell. The house smells really clean after use, but not heavily perfumed.” Verified purchaser (and dog owner), Courtney P. Mixon, whose German Shepherd regularly pees on the carpet, claims it “gets the carpet cleaner than, at least some, professional cleaners.”

All About Bissell Carpet Cleaners

While Bissell is famous for making high-quality and top-of-the-line vacuum cleaners, steam mops and carpet cleaners, the brand seriously excels when it comes to products designed specifically for pet owners. A few of its most highly rated carpet cleaners for pets include the Bissell ProHeat 2X Revolution Pet Pro Carpet Cleaner, a high-end stand-up model, and several portable models, including the Bissell SpotClean Pet Pro Portable Carpet Cleaner, the Bissell Little Green Pet Deluxe Portable Carpet Cleaner and the Bissell Pet Stain Eraser PowerBrush.

Generally, Bissell also offers 30-day returns for carpet cleaners purchased on its website. However, some models, including the Bissell ProHeat 2X Revolution Pet Pro Carpet Cleaner, have an extended 60-day return policy. Check the website for more details. As for warranty, the length of time varies by product. For example, the same ProHeat model is under a five-year limited warranty while the Bissell SpotClean Pet Pro Portable Carpet Cleaner only has a two-year warranty.

Our Favorite Bissell Carpet Cleaner

Bissell makes a variety of popular full-size and portable carpet cleaners for removing pet stains. While they are all highly rated, it’s their portable spot-cleaning machines the brand really excels with. The Bissell SpotClean Pet Pro Portable Carpet Cleaner is our top pick for their best portable cleaner.

I can personally attest to its efficiency after my 100-pound German Shorthaired Pointer suffered from explosive diarrhea all over an expensive Persian rug. With strong suction and superior scrubbing power, it literally erased several spotsand the beyond putrid smell that went along with themin just moments.

For a larger model that tackles complete rooms, Halton recommends the Bissell ProHeat 2X Revolution Pet Pro Carpet Cleaner, another popular choice among shoppers. “The powerful suction, deep-cleaning technology and quick-dry features are among the reasons why people love it for removing tough pet stains and odors,” he says. It also comes equipped with a carpet cleaning system that includes a pre-treat solution that target tough spots and stains. “We also like that it has an upholstery tool to remove pet hair, odors and more from sofas and other upholstered pieces,” Halton says. And it’s also effective in cleaning pet stains on stairs or in tight spots, thanks to the unique tools that come with the carpet cleaner.

FAQ

Is Hoover a good brand carpet cleaner?

Hoover is considered one of the best carpet cleaner brands, especially for pet messes, says Halton.

What carpet cleaner machines do professionals use?

When messes are too tough to tackle personally, or if you have a rug with special cleaning instructions, Halton recommends calling a professional carpet cleaner. “Not only are they knowledgeable, but professional carpet cleaners have seen it all and will have a plan to help get your carpets as clean as possible,” says Halton. Professional cleaners don’t use carpet cleaners you can buy in stores. “They have special, high-powered equipment that will tackle even the worst stains. Professional carpet cleaners often use heavy-duty steam cleaners, typically more powerful than consumer-grade carpet cleaners, to deep clean carpets and remove dirt, stains and odors more effectively,” he adds.

The Bottom Line

So, who wins in the battle of Hoover vs. Bissel carpet cleaner debate? Both brands are well-known and respected brands in the carpet cleaner industry, and both offer a range of high-quality carpet cleaner models. Ultimately your decision should depend on a variety of factors. Like Halton mentioned, Hoover carpet cleaners are generally known for their advanced cleaning technologies and offering a wide range of models at different price points. Bissell carpet cleaners are known for their durability and reliability, equipping their machines with advanced features that help remove tough stains and dirt.

Instead of making a Hoover vs. Bissell carpet cleaner decision, base your choice on the model. “When choosing between the two, it’s essential to consider your specific cleaning needs, budget and preferences,” he says.

Overall, if you’re looking for a portable carpet cleaner, Bissell is the obvious choice as its smaller models are often regarded as the best in the business. However, for a stand-up carpet cleaner, both Hoover and Bissell make smart options.

Are Christmas Trees Toxic to Cats? https://www.familyhandyman.com/article/christmas-trees-cats/ Wed, 25 Oct 2023 19:55:37 +0000 https://www.familyhandyman.com/?p=578717 Give your cat the gift of a vet-free holiday season by keeping these Christmas tree hazards well out of their reach.

The post Are Christmas Trees Toxic to Cats? appeared first on Family Handyman.

]]>
Do you love the fresh smell of a real Christmas tree, but worry about your cat nibbling on needles or sipping the tree water? Or maybe you’ve chosen the best artificial Christmas tree of the season, yet own a playful cat who can’t resist climbing and chewing?

If you’re wondering if Christmas trees are toxic to cats, don’t worry. A cat who nibbles on a real or fake Christmas tree probably won’t need treatment at the emergency veterinary hospital, says Dr. Renee Schmid, a senior veterinarian toxicologist at the Pet Poison Helpline.

Real Christmas trees contain mildly toxic components that may cause vomiting or diarrhea, she says. But definitely skip any Christmas tree water additives. If your cat has persistent vomiting or diarrhea, or stops eating after ingesting real or fake Christmas tree needles, contact your veterinarian immediately.

Are Real Christmas Trees Safe for Cats?

Schmid says it’s safe to have a Christmas tree, even if you have a cat. But minimize your cat’s risks by keeping these dangers in mind and follow the Christmas tree-proofing tips.

Christmas tree needles

Christmas trees contain essential oils which can irritate your cat’s mouth and stomach, Schmid says. Fake or real needles can also get stuck in your cat’s gastrointestinal tract if they eat too many.

“If your cat only chewed on needles or ingested very few, you can monitor them at home,” Schmid says. Call your veterinarian if you notice any signs of illness, like vomiting, diarrhea, decreased appetite or excessive drooling.

In rare cases, fake or real Christmas needles can cause life-threatening obstructions. Seek emergency care if your cat exhibits abdominal pain, becomes lethargic, has persistent vomiting or diarrhea or stops eating.

Christmas tree water

“Plain Christmas tree water is not inherently dangerous but it can contain contaminants from the tree, including bacteria and potential pesticides,” says Dr. Nicole Savageau, a veterinarian with The Vets, a mobile veterinary service in cities across the U.S.

Unfortunately, the additives that keep your Christmas tree living longer can be highly toxic to pets. If your cat drinks Christmas tree water with aspirin added, Schmid says they’re at risk of gastrointestinal ulceration and other organ damage.

If you believe your cat has ingested Christmas tree water with additives, immediately call the Pet Poison Helpline (855-764-7661) or ASPCA Animal Poison Control (888-426-4435). You’ll reach board-certified veterinarians who can determine if the additives are toxic and if your cat needs need veterinary care. They can also consult with your veterinarian to recommend the best treatments for your cat.

Christmas tree sap

Christmas tree sap is not toxic but can cause mild stomach upset. If you think your cat ate tree sap, monitor them for vomiting or excessive drooling. Call your veterinarian if signs persist or worsen.

Christmas tree decorations

Some cats prefer batting at bulbs and chewing on lights and tinsel rather than the tree itself. The texture of cords can be enticing to cats because it can feel like natural prey, Savageau says.

Chewing on cords can put your cat at risk of electrocution or ingestion of lightbulb glass. Schmid adds tinsel can cause gastrointestinal obstructions. And some tinsel is made with zinc, which is toxic to cats. Homemade salt dough ornaments may seem like a cat-safe option, but Schmid says they can put cats at risk of salt toxicity if eaten.

If you suspect that your cat has ingested something dangerous, contact your veterinarian immediately.

Cats and Christmas Trees

“Cats may chew on Christmas trees for various reasons, such as curiosity or play,” Savageau says. She adds cats aren’t typically interested in pine needles for their flavor.

Stephen Quandt, a feline training and behavior specialist and owner of Stephen Quandt Feline Behavior Associates, LLC, says punishing your cat for exploring the Christmas tree will only make them fearful and stressed, and they may not understand why you’re punishing them,

Instead, try these tips for creating a pet-safe Christmas tree. They’ll keep your cat out of the tree and safe from potential dangers:

“Remember that every cat is unique, and what works to deter one cat may not work for another,” Savageau says. “Be attentive to your cat’s behavior, and adjust your strategy as needed to keep them safe during the holiday season.”

The New Tineco Pure One Station Self Cleans the Entire Machine (Really!) https://www.familyhandyman.com/article/tineco-pure-one-station/ Tue, 10 Oct 2023 16:22:46 +0000 With self-cleaning capabilities, smart sensors, tangle-free technology and more, the Tineco Pure One Station is my new favorite vacuum.

The post The New Tineco Pure One Station Self Cleans the Entire Machine (Really!) appeared first on Family Handyman.

As someone with long, thick hair and a large German Shepherd, Im perpetually cleaning hair and fur from my floors and furniture. Im also constantly tangling (and sometimes breaking beyond use) vacuum cleaners. So, when I finally got my hands on the new Tineco Pure One Station with ZeroTangle and FurFree technology, I was stoked to say the least.

Ive always wanted a slender, cordless stick vacuum cleaner, but unfortunately, most vacuums have failed to clean up all the hair and fur that ends up around my house. That said, I was excited to try out the Tineco Pure One Station, but I was also a little nervous. Would the smart stick vacuum be able to handle all my hairy messes? Heres how its going so far.

What is the Tineco Pure One Station?

Cleaning wooden floor with vacuum cleaner

The Tineco Pure One Station is a smart vacuum cleaning hub with a cordless stick vacuum and docking station that self-cleans, charges and stores the vacuum. It works on all floor types, from vacuuming laminate and wood to tile and carpet. And it even auto-detects how much suction is needed based on the mess at hand.

The Pure One Station comes with accessories like a small brush head for handheld use on furniture and a long, hard hose for cleaning crevices, baseboards and in between couch cushions. The smart hub stores your vacuum and accessories, so you can tuck it all away in a closet or pantry (if theres a outlet within reach). The Pure One Station even comes with a FurFree Kit for pet grooming, so you can brush and vacuum your dog to reduce shedding. (My dog Henry hates vacuums, so he would not let me near him with this device. However, if you have a cooperative doggo, I think this accessory kit is genius, making this is a solid vacuum for pet owners.)

We Tried It

Tineco Pure One Station

The all-new Tineco Pure One Station is the first Tineco vacuum with a smart docking hub.

Tineco Pure One Station Features

Attachments for Vacuum Cleaner

There are several impressive features associated with the Tineco Pure One Station. Perhaps the most impressive is the automatic self-cleaning feature on the docking hub. Once you return the vacuum to the hub, it automatically empties the vacuum into a large, 3-liter dustbin. Not only does it empty the vacuum hands-free, but it also cleans every part of the vacuum from brush to tube and filters! This process takes seconds, so you can empty your vacuum and move onto cleaning the next room if needed.

As mentioned, the cordless stick vacuum can be used as a standard push vacuum or a handheld vacuum. In other words, you can use both brush heads with and without the middle tube, depending on how close you need to get to the mess for cleaning. The larger brush head is designed with ZeroTangle technology to trap hair without wrapping it. This is a must-have feature for people with a lot of hair or fur around the house.

The Tineco Pure One Station also has smart sensors that detect dust and dirt to deliver the suction power needed and improve cleaning efficiency. And the five-stage high-efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filter captures 99.99% of dust particles for healthier air.

Finally, the FurFree Kit (that my dog respectfully declined to let me use on him) includes a hose and brush head designed to gently detangle and smooth your pets hair while vacuuming up the fur thats collected from their coat. If youre someone who grooms your dog at home, this may be a major selling point for you. Truthfully, I fell in love with the rest of the vacuum and found that the FurFree Kit was a feature I didnt need. If your pup is cooperative, this kit could change how often you need to vacuum in general.

How We Tested It

Cleaning couch with vacuum cleaner

Ive been using the new Tineco Pure One Station around my own house on multiple floor types and surfaces for a few weeks. I did not expect to be so impressed with the self-cleaning feature, but its incredible. The filter and dust can that are built into the vacuum are small, which helps the vacuum keep its lightweight, slender size. I love that I can stop at the hub for quick, hands-free emptying and cleaning in between jobs. Plus, Ive been using the vacuum almost daily for weeks, and I havent had to empty the larger dustbin on the docking station yet.

I have wood floors, tile and a bit of laminate throughout my home. The only carpet I have is in the form of low-pile rugs. While I admit this helps me keep hair at bay (because hair doesnt get embedded like it would in high-pile carpet), I still find tons of hair clumped on my floors and furniture. So far, Ive not had any issues with the no-tangle brush head. It has done an excellent job picking up hair, fur, dirt and dust without any clogging issues. For me, thats been a dream come true.

I use my Tineco Pure One primarily to keep my floors clean. However, I love switching to the handheld mode and using the smaller brush head to vacuum my couch and other furniture about once a week. It does wonders for keeping my couch looking fresh.

If you’re in search of a vacuum for an apartment or other kind of shared living space, the Tineco Pure One Station is quieter than almost every other vacuum cleaner I’ve used. Plus, its compact size and slender body are ideal if you don’t have a ton of extra storage space.

My only issues with the Tineco Pure One Station so far have been that occasionally longer hairs will get closed in the lid of the vacuum dust can and that Id like the suction to be a little bit more powerful when I’m using the hard extension hose. Every once in a while, a long hair will get closed in the dust can’s lid (near the handle, where the filter is housed) after self-cleaning mode occurs. When the vacuum self cleans on the docking station, the debris thats been vacuumed up is sucked out of the dust can near the handle and dumped into the large dustbin. This process sometimes leaves behind a hair or two. This isnt a huge issue, as I can pull the hair out with my fingers and go about cleaning, but its worth mentioning. The other issue is a small quibble, too.

When the vacuum detects messes and adjusts its suction to clean the mess, the ring on the handle turns from red to blue (blue signals that the mess is clean). On the whole, I absolutely love this feature and find that it’s pretty accurate. However, when using the hard hose extension to get into corners of the room, I find that the suction sensors tend to be a little weaker. While the suction is typically still powerful enough to do the job, I wish there were a high-suction manual mode you could press when needed.

Pros

  • Smart hub docking station cleans, charges and houses vacuum
  • Cordless and weighs just 5.3 pounds
  • Quiet and slender
  • Self-cleaning feature is quick and effective
  • Smart sensors deliver tailored, precise suction power
  • iLoop on vacuum handle turns from red to blue to indicate messes are clean
  • Large brush head has ZeroTangle technology
  • Can be used as handheld or push device
  • Attachments included
  • Comes with FurFree Kit for pet grooming
  • Useful for homes with a lot of hair and fur

Cons

  • Expensive
  • Self-cleaning mode occasionally leaves behind (trace amounts of) hair and debris

FAQ

Cleaning carpet with vacuum cleaner

Can I use a Tineco on hardwood floors?

Yes! Tinecos smart sensors can detect messes on virtually any floor type, including carpet, tile, wood, laminate, linoleum and more.

Which Tineco is best for hair?

The Pure One Station FurFree (reviewed here) and the Pure One S15 are the best for sucking up hair, as they both have anti-tangle brush heads, headlights and powerful suction. Plus, both work on hard floors and carpet.

What Other Reviewers Had to Say

Since the Tineco Pure One Station just launched, there are only a few Amazon reviews published. Heres an early look at what buyers are saying about the new smart stick vacuum.

PainterSam gives it five stars and writes, Can you actually fangirl over a vacuum? Yes! This thing solves so many issues with the stick vacuums. Its super lightweight, light beyond. Super suction. And other than the talking part, which I love The self-cleaning container! I havent changed our cleaning station in a month. I used to have to dump the Dyson and make a mess every time I used it. This option saves time and you have a clean canister every time you go to grab it. Bonus: the pet cleaner. Love, love, love! Thank you, Tineco, for the amazing vacuum.

Oh my goodness! This is an awesome cordless vacuum,” says Bear hugger, another five-star reviewer “It has good suction power, cleans the dog hair excellently! It has a pet attachment that brushes the dog and automatically cleans the brushes when put back on the base unit. Deodorizing filter keeps it fresh and smelling good. Highly recommended!

Product Comparison

Vacuum Cleaner on Charging Dock

The Tineco Pure One Station is the only vacuum in the Tineco lineup with a smart hub docking station. This feature offers easy charging, cleaning and storing. While other cordless Tineco vacuums are lightweight, have smart suction technology and can handle hair, none have the auto-empty and self-cleaning features that this new one does.

Final Verdict

Honestly, Im in love with the Tineco Pure One Station. It makes vacuuming easy, fun and worry-free. In fact, I vacuum way more often because theres no cord to plugin or wind, the vacuum is lightweight and easy to push, I dont have to handle gross dust and debris and the smart features (including voice prompts) havent lost their novelty yet. My only hang up with this vacuum is the price point. Its very expensive and probably not a realistic purchase if youre on a budget. However, if you have the funds to splurge on a new, smart vacuum cleaner, you should definitely check out the Tineco Pure One Station.

The Hottest Housing Trend? Pet-Friendly Homes https://www.familyhandyman.com/article/pet-friendly-homes-trend/ Thu, 05 Oct 2023 20:47:07 +0000 https://www.familyhandyman.com/?p=573273 Here's exactly how to find the perfect house for you and your furry friend.

The post The Hottest Housing Trend? Pet-Friendly Homes appeared first on Family Handyman.

]]>
For many of us, our pets are an essential part of our family. According to new research from real estate company Zillow, 78% of 2023 home buyers said they share a home with “at least one pet,” as opposed to just 40% who report at least one child.

It follows, then, that 2023 would also see a spike in the sales of pet-friendly homes, with 80% of pet-owning home buyers saying their pet influenced their decision substantially. This rate increases to 88% for buyers aged 18 to 29.

To get a full picture of the pet-friendly home buying trend, we spoke to Amanda Pendleton, Zillow Home Trends Expert. She told us why pet-friendly houses are so coveted, what to look for in a house or neighborhood to determine if it’s a good fit, and how to seal the deal on a pet-friendly house.

The Growing Demand for Pet-Friendly Homes and Neighborhoods

According to Zillow’s research, rates of pet ownership among home buyers have risen a whopping 14 percentage points since 2020. Pendleton credits the coronavirus pandemic for this dramatic increase.

“The pandemic sparked a boom in pet ownership as people craved connection and had a lot more time on their hands and a lot more time at home to care for an animal,” she says.

“The pandemic also brought increased awareness and prioritization of mental and physical health. Pets have been proven to improve health and wellbeing and lead to more exercise, more outdoor time and more social interaction [which] can make an impact on our happiness.”

What to Look for In Pet-Friendly Homes

Small Miniature,Black schnauzer dog sitting waiting for owner near white fence.

Pendleton says fenced backyards are the most coveted pet-friendly home feature, with 33% of pet-owning buyers calling a fenced backyard “essential.” Additionally, homes with a fenced backyard sell three days faster than similar homes, according to Zillow’s research.

The second most popular feature appears to be a doghouse or proximity to a dog park, with 33% of pet-owning buyers considering these essential. Pendleton says homes close to walking trails can “sell more than a day faster” than similar houses.

How to Tell If a Neighborhood Is Pet-Friendly

“There’s no substitute for touring a neighborhood in person, preferably with your pet!” Pendelton says. This way you can look for walking trails and dog-friendly businesses, like groomers or dog-washing stations, pet stores or even restaurants with pet-friendly patios.

If you can’t tour a neighborhood in person, Pendleton says, “Apps like Rover and Yelp can help identify where there’s a high availability of pet stores, veterinarians and pet sitters.” Additionally, lean on your real estate agent, who she says can be a “trusted, valuable source of information on all the local amenities.”

More Advice from an Expert

Pendleton says to expect more competition and be ready to act quickly.

“Get your financial ducks in a row,” she says. “Understand how much home you can afford using a mortgage calculator.” Then, she says, look for a lender and get pre-approved for a mortgage, not just pre-qualified. Pre-approval will help allow you to make a more competitive offer on the house of your dreams.

Next, she says, hire a great real estate agent. “Do your homework, read agent reviews and check past sales before interviewing your top candidates,” she says. “An experienced agent can give you a competitive edge and the intel you need to win the deal.”

And finally, rely on tech. “New tools like virtual 3D home tours and interactive floor plans can give you a more immersive experience of a home from your living room,” she says. Using these tools, she says, will help you quickly winnow down your options and act faster when your perfect home hits the market.

Litter Robot 4 Review: We Tried the Ultimate Smart Litter Box https://www.familyhandyman.com/article/litter-robot-4/ Wed, 06 Sep 2023 15:23:09 +0000 Is the Litter Robot 4 truly the answer to every cat owner's prayers?

The post Litter Robot 4 Review: We Tried the Ultimate Smart Litter Box appeared first on Family Handyman.

]]>
Common kitty wisdom states that you should own one litter box for every cat in your family, plus one extra to give your most discerning feline friends some variety when doing their business. But what to do when you don’t have the space for multiple litter boxes? Stand by the box at attention, ready to scoop their poop the moment it happens? As the mom of four fur babies, I simply do not have the time to provide that sort of white-gloved service. Could the Litter Robot 4 be the answer to my prayers?

Litter-Robot 4

Suitable for up to four cats, this marvelous machine will automatically clean the litter after every use, while reducing odors and litter tracking. It also offers pet tracking so you can keep tabs on the health of your furry, four-legged friends.

What is the Litter Robot 4?

The Litter Robot 4 is commonly considered to be the self-cleaning litter box to end all self-cleaning litter boxesthe Rolls Royce of automated cat toilets, if you will. And it certainly doesn’t look like any litter box you’ve seen before! Litter Robot has completely reimagined the kitty litter experience, forgoing the traditional sandbox design in lieu of a circular, pod-like design.

The inside of the Litter Robot is a rubber-lined rotating drum; once kitty is done doing their business, it slowly spins to sift away the clean litter, then dumps the clumps and cat poop into a sealed waste compartment at the bottom of the unit. It then rotates in the opposite direction, filtering the clean litter back into the main chamber. The Litter Robot has a built-in charcoal filter to help eliminate odors, too, so your cats will always feel like they’re using a litter box meant exclusively for them.

What truly sets the Litter Robot 4 apart from the rest of the pack is its integrated technology. This self-cleaning litter box connects to your Wi-Fi network, letting you know when your cat has done their business, how full the waste bin is and whether or not you need to add more cat litter. It also records the weight of whichever cat is using the box, so you can keep track of their bathroom habits and notice any changes (i.e., things your cat wishes they could tell you), which could signal health issues.

Litter Robot 4 Product Features

I must confess, this isn’t my first dalliance with the Litter Robot 4I purchased their original model waaaaaay back in 2005, and my cats at the time did not take very kindly to it. The first Litter Robot was quite noisy, which frequently startled them, making them think it was something more in line with killer robots or diabolical cat traps than a litter box. However, nearly two decades of redesigns and improvements on the initial idea have completely changed everything, making the Litter Robot 4 feel like something light years ahead of the original. Here are some of the next-gen features that make this high-tech pet gadget a game changer.

App Functionality and Monitoring Features

Litter Robot 4 Whisker App Screenshots

You’ll always know the state of your litter boxand your kitty cat’s healththanks to the Wi-Fi connectivity of the Litter Robot 4. Once you’ve downloaded the company’s Whisker app to your smartphone, you’ll receive regular updates on how often your cats use the litter box, their current weight, and how full the waste tray is. The app records and stores usage information so you can see your cat’s litter box habits over time, which can help you catch health problems at their onset.

Using the app, you can customize many of the Litter Robot 4’s functions, like how quickly the clean cycle activates after your cat leaves the robot (between 3 and 30 minutes), motion-sensitive light settings, sleep mode, and locking the manual control panel on the robot.

Size and Cat Comfort

The Litter-Robot 4s open front makes it easier for cats to enter and exit, but its 14-inch litter bed may feel cramped for larger cats or those that dislike confined spaces. If you have a big cat, measure a similar space before purchasing or check it out at local retailers.

Whisper-Quiet Operation

Unlike the original, the Litter-Robot 4 operates so quietly you might not notice itunless your cat makes a racket while using it like mine does.

Odor Control and Cleaning

With four cats, litter box odor is a constant battle, so I prioritized odor control when choosing the Litter-Robot 4. Its odor control is excellent. I set it to cycle three minutes after use, dumping clumps into a sealed chamber below. The charcoal filter helps keep smells at bay, but periodic deep cleaning is necessary, especially in multi-cat households. Whisker recommends basic cleaning every 1-3 months and deep cleaning at least every three months.

Cat Detection Safety Feature

There is no need to worry about your cat getting trapped during a clean cycle. Sensors detect when cats step onto the litter box and pause any operation until theyve left the area. The detectors also track your cats weight, which is helpful in multi-cat homes for monitoring usage.

Adjustment Period

It may take time for your cat to adjust to the Litter-Robot. Introducing it graduallyinitially with manual cyclescan help skittish cats feel more comfortable. An added perk: the night light can be set to on, off, or automatic.

How We Tested It

The first order of business with the Litter Robot 4 is figuring out where you’re going to put it, which is trickier than it sounds. Though its size is clearly advertised on its website (29-1/2 inches tall and 22 inches wide, to be exact), you won’t fully appreciate how massive the Litter Robot 4 is until an intimidatingly-large box arrives at your doorstep. Though difficult to lift and carry, there are two significant positives: The box is gargantuan because the Litter Robot 4 arrives fully assembled, and its presence will keep your kitties fully occupied while you set up their new litter box.

I’ve always kept my litter boxes in the bathroom, but the Litter Robot is too large to fit in mine. I ended up setting mine up in the corner of my living room, where my cats spend the majority of their days sleeping and scratching themselves. I’m not thrilled with the situation, but things like this are par for the course when you’re a city apartment dweller. Fortunately, the Litter Robot 4 isdare I say it? good looking, with a sleek modernist design that helps distract you from the fact you have a toilet in your living room.

I fully expected the set-up of a space-age litter box to be confusing, which is why I was extra grateful for the helpful instructional videos accessible via QR code. After plugging it in I downloaded the Whisker App and synced my litter box to my phone, which is something I never imagined doing, but we live in remarkable times.

After filling the Litter Robot 4 with my favorite litter (we swear by Naturally Fresh!), I sat back patiently waiting for my cat children to check it out, praying that they wouldn’t find it too ominous or intimidating. Many pet experts recommend a number of steps to help acclimate cats to a new litter box, but fortunately, all four of my boys ended up taking to it immediately. Within a week, my cats stopped using one of their traditional litter boxes entirely, preferring the constant cleanliness of the Litter Robot 4 to a litter box staffed by measly, fallible humans.

Daily Use and Maintenance

The primary goal of a self-cleaning litter box like the Litter Robot 4 is to eliminate the hassle of scooping and daily maintenance, and boy oh boy does it succeed. There are only two issues I need to deal with on a day-to-day basis. One is sweeping the floor outside the opening, as someone (who shall remain nameless) loves kicking litter out of the box after using it while screaming loudly for no good reason.

The second: I press a button to manually force a cycle before I go to bed at night, just to make sure there’s no wet litter that’s gotten stuck to the bottom. If there is, I use a standard litter box scoop to knock it loose midcycle so that it falls through the trap door into the waste chamber below. The Litter Robot 4 does all the rest!

With four cats, I need to empty the waste tray every three days or so. Though Litter Robot sells special odor-proof bags you can use to line the drawer, I use standard 13-gallon kitchen trash bags, which fit perfectly. All I need to do to clean is pull out the drawer, cinch up the bag and toss it in the trash. Easy peasy.

Pros

  • Truly self-cleaning
  • Good for pregnant people who should avoid cat litter, or those with accessibility issues
  • Whisper-quiet
  • Excellent odor control
  • Comes pre-assembled
  • Easy setup
  • Cat detector technology for safety
  • Integrated app for monitoring bathroom usage, litter box capacity and nighttime activity
  • Customizable settings for single or multi-cat households
  • Aesthetic design

Cons

  • Quite large
  • Some cats may take time to get used to it
  • Still requires a little cleaning for certain messes
  • Not for kittens under 3 pounds
  • Warranty limited to 1 year
  • This high-tech gadget comes with a hefty price tag of $700

What Other Users Had to Say

“Honestly this cat box has changed both my cats and my familys life,” says a verified five-star reviewer on Whisker’s site. “My house is now clean, no tracks and litter all over and smells good. We’ve only been using the Litter Robot for two months but what an unbelievable difference it has made in all of our lives already.”

“The cats love it. I love it. After trying another brand and throwing my money away I really appreciate everything about this one,” says Heather in her five-star Chewy review. “Also between being able to use my own garbage sacks in it and the minimal amount of litter it uses I will probably save some of what I spent on it plus I have spent zero time messing with it trying to make it work.”

“Why, oh why did we wait so long to get a litter robot?” says Hollie in her verified five-star review on Whisker’s site. “All 3 of our kitties took to it right away. Its wonderful that they have a clean box every time. The time saved by scooping is great, not to mention we use less litter now.”

FAQ

Can you use any litter with Litter-Robot 4?

“Litter-Robot works well with almost any clumping or scoopable litter,” says Whisker. “Litter beads and crystals that are small enough to pass through the screen will also work.”

How many cats can use Litter-Robot 4?

Litter-Robot 4 is designed for households with up to four cats.

Is Litter-Robot 4 worth the upgrade?

With an MSRP of $700, Litter-Robot 4 is an investment, but many users report its worth it. The larger opening makes it easier for cats to use, the waste drawer liner is simpler to replace, and it operates much quieter than previous models.

Product Comparison: Litter Robot 3 vs. 4

Rd Ecomm Litter Robot 3 Vs 4

If you’re debating between purchasing the Litter Robot 3 or Litter Robot 4, or wondering how the 3 stacks up to the new-and-improved Litter Robot 4, here’s a quick overview of what’s changed. (You can check out the full comparison on the Whisker website):

  • Wider opening for easier cat access
  • Sleeker design that disguises the fact that it’s literally a toilet
  • Better odor control thanks to deeper waster drawer with tighter-fitting seal
  • LowDust screen reduces amount of dust
  • Enhanced sensors to detect and provide real-time litter and waste levels
  • Quieter (practically silent!)
  • Five cycle delay settings (set timer to clean 3, 7, 15, 25 or 30 minutes after cat has exited)
  • New color options include black or white (previously gray or beige)
  • Lower weight threshold means cats as small as 3 pounds can now use the Robot

Final Verdict

Is the Litter Robot 4 a splurge? Absolutely. This self-cleaning litter box is not cheap, and it’s hard to spend that sort of money on something unless you’re absolutely, positively sure that it works. And after over two months of use, I can confidently say that the Litter Robot 4 not only works, but exceeds expectations. If you’re a single cat household, it might be more of a luxury purchase, unless you really, really hate scooping litter. But for a multi-cat household like mine, it’s an absolute godsend.

Where to Buy the Litter Robot 4

Litter-Robot 4

Cleaning kitty litter can be a major pain. But this automated litter box will handle all that dirty business. With its automatic, self-cleaning technology, it quietly provides a fresh bed of litter after every use, while reducing odor and litter tracking.

As a dog mom to a toy shredder, I find myself in an endless cycle of purchasing dog toys only to see him rip them to shreds in record time. And yet, I keep returning to the toy aisle, as if expecting a different outcome than what has become our little song and dance: I pay good money for a cute toy in exchange for one minute of doggie enjoyment and a layer of fluff blanketing my living room.

The Super Chewer box offers a variety of durable toys and, luckily, provides a manual to explain each so you can tailor future deliveries to your dog’s liking and play preference (something BarkBox actually encourages!). The company also instructs dog owners to notify their Happy team if they would prefer “more fabric,” “solid nylon,” “mixed nylon” or “less nylon” in their next delivery.

  • Wacky Bounces + Super Squeaks: squeaking rubber toys for playtime and fetch
  • Serious Chewing: nylon toys to satisfy committed chewers
  • More Ways to Play: puzzles and treat dispensers for pup engagement
  • Mixed Materials: mix of rubber and nylon for chewing versatility
  • Snuggle, Shred & Surprise: once the outer layer is chewed, a second bonus toy is revealed

Barkbox Super Chewer User Manual on Wooden Surface

Each box also contains two 3-ounce bags of treats (ideal for rewarding or training), and two chews made with real ingredients from recipes developed by nutritionists. Just as you can tailor the toys to meet your pup’s liking, you can also let BarkBox know if your dog has any allergies or aversions.

And if after all that, your pup isn’t fully satisfied (highly unlikely!), BarkBox offers a 100% satisfaction guarantee.

How We Tested It

The BarkBox arrived at my door, and I’ll admit unboxing it was just as exciting for me as it was for my dog. I was a little worried that the toys would all be hard rubber or nylon materialsomething that does not excite my dog, Ernie. I was pleasantly surprised to find two fabric toys (each with a squeaker, I might add), that Ernie was eagerly waiting to sink his teeth into.

Dog Chewing Barkbox Super Chewer

Both toys were labeled for large dogs (50+ pounds), which I had specified when signing up for the subscription. The first was an adorable Mad Cow “rip and reveal” toy (OK, now I may actually be encouraging Ernie to destroy the toy faster to satisfy my curiosity). The second was a Corn to Run “tug and fetch” cream-scented toy. I gave both to him at separate times and he chewed on each for quite awhile, but never destroying either (to my surprise and also to my dismay, as I really wanted to see the bonus toy!).

Dog Chewing Barkbox Super Chewer

Ernie was equally excited about the two bags of treatsso much so, I could barely snap the photo below. He received a bag of Turkey + Sweet Potato Jerky Nibbles and Chicken + Pumpkin Jerky Cuts. I loved how soft and fresh these treats were (and Ernie did, too). They also had a very enticing smell to them, and I could tell they were made with fresh, quality ingredients.

Dog Treat in Hand and Dog Sitting on Rug

Last but certainly not least, the box included two large chew sticks: Beef and Pumpkin & Honey. As an avid chewer, Ernie enjoys gnawing on a good chew stick on the back patio. These are a little softer than his typical bully sticks (you can break them in half), so they were chewed rather quickly and not savored for as long as I would have liked. But still a great treat, nonetheless!

Pros

  • Ability to tailor box to dog’s play and dietary preferences
  • Offers a variety of toys and treat flavors (in themed packaging)
  • Toys are bisphenol A (BPA)-free
  • Treats are made with fresh ingredients
  • Multiple subscription plans to choose from
  • Auto-ship saves time and prevents need to go shopping
  • Helps prevent chewing of furniture and other household items
  • It makes my dog happy!

Cons

  • Monthly subscription is more expensive than the six- and 12-month plans
  • For my pup, the chew sticks don’t last very long

FAQ

How much does BarkBox Super Chewer cost?

The subscription price is dependent on the plan you choose, with longer commitments proving the most cost-effective. A 12-month subscription is $25 per box and a six-month subscription (the most popular plan) is $30 per box. You can also forgo the longer-terms plan and purchase a monthly subscription at $40 per box, which is a smart option if you simply want to try it out, purchase it occasionally or gift to a friend.

Does BarkBox have tough toys?

BarkBox’s Super Chewer subscription offers a variety of durable toys to withstand the toughest of chewers and the roughest of playtimes. BarkBox notes on its website that they have personally designed and tested each toy with their own super chewer dogs to ensure they stand up to their “chompion chewer” target demographic.

With versatility at top of mind, the brand offers a selection of product textures (from rubber to nylon to durable fabric) and different types of toy types (chewing, fetching and treat-dispensing) to satisfy every dog’s unique preferences. That being said, BarkBox also points out that no toy is 100% indestructible, and for safety reasons, the products are purposely designed to break apart before potentially causing any damage to your canine’s canines. Keep in mind that if you’re not satisfied with the durability of any toy you receive, BarkBox will replace it free of charge (and no questions asked).

Can I change from Super Chewer to BarkBox?

You can switch from Super Chewer to the regular BarkBox, and vice versa, at any time. Simply reach out to BarkBox’s Happy Team to switch overthere is no need to create a new subscription.

Product Comparison

Barbox Super Chewer Vs Barbox Original

The only difference betweenthe original and Super Chewer is the toys. While regular BarkBox recipients receive two plush toys, Super Chewer subscribers receive two tougher, more durable toys to accommodate strong chewers and rowdier roughhousing. As a result, the Super Chewer subscription is priced slightly higher, ranging from $25 to $40 per box while the original BarkBox ranges from $22 to $35 per box.

Final Verdict

Barkbox Super Chewer in Hand on Fabric Surface

A few weeks later, I am happy to report that the toys have gone through vigorous rounds of testing by both Ernie and another verified super chewer that we dogsat. The result? Two enticing (as noted by a few minor battle wounds), yet still very intact, toys. While I still have yet to confirm what bonus toy lies underneath the cow, I can confidently say that the BarkBox Super Chewer receives two thumbs up from me and multiple tail wags (and many more to come) from Ernie.

PIC Insect Killer Torch Review: Is It the Best Bug Zapper? (We Tried It!) https://www.familyhandyman.com/article/pic-insect-killer-torch/ Thu, 10 Aug 2023 18:09:27 +0000 Tired of shooing bugs away? Check out my PIC Insect Killer Torch review for the 4-1-1 on this beautiful, yet functional, bug zapper.

No one, and I mean no one likes bug bites. If mosquitoes are bugging your family’s outdoor evenings, deter them with this solar-powered bug zapper and beautiful flameless torch. The PIC insect killer torch zaps bugs while adding a touch of class to your backyard festivities.

If you hate bugs like I do, youve probably tried a variety of bug repellents or sprays to eliminate them. Mosquitos arent just a painful annoyancethey can also carry diseases. A bug zapper helps rid your yard of these beasts, and this torch is the most stylish way to keep them at bay without resorting to harmful chemicals and sprays.

What is the PIC insect killer torch?

Split Screen Day And Night Pic Insect Killer Torch

The PIC insect killer torch is a solar-powered bug zapper and patio light in one attractive product. It doesnt need electricity to operate, so you can place it nearly anywhere. The flickering LED flame effect lasts six hours or more with a full charge in direct sunlight. It automatically comes on at dusk and zaps the life out of flying insects with 600 volts of power.

The unit comes with three plastic extension poles, connectors, a ground stake and a tabletop base for various heights and uses. The lamp itself is 8 inches tallideal for tabletopsbut when you adjust it to full height, which is 4 feet tall, you can use it to light your pathway.

PIC Insect Killer Torch Features

before and after using Pic Insect Killer Torch

If you like the look of a tiki torch without the danger of an open flame, youll appreciate the aesthetics of this insect killer torch. The unit provides a life-like flickering flame effect without requiring oil. As a result, it’s safe and maintenance-free. Plus, it automatically comes on at dusk, just when the mosquitoes are ravenous. The PIC torch covers an area of 0.5 acres, is weatherproof and rain wont accumulate with its open-grid design. To finish off the convenience, the slide-out tray catches debris.

This solar-powered torch isn’t tethered to an electric source, so you can place it anywhere. The manufacturer claims six hours of burn timeand that’s true. I keep one on my covered front porch, which loses sunlight midday, and it still works with the solar-powered charge. In full sun, the torches work into the wee hours of the morning.

How We Tested It

gif of flickering Pic Insect Killer Torch at night

I have zero tolerance for bugs. When I moved from a dry climate to the Midwest, I was on a mission to find natural ways to eradicate pests. Three years ago, I found the PIC torch at a local hardware store. This handsome solar-powered torch light was an insect killer, too, so how could I resist? I was sold. I loved the look of it and bought three.

I didnt have a huge mosquito problem (at the time), because I found an eco-friendly yard spray to protect me and my pets from no-see-ums, fleas and ticks. So I was shocked to discover insects in the clutches of the torches a few days after setting them up.

Like some outdoor solar lights Ive owned, I expected to get a year or two out of the PIC torch. I kept the boxes to store them for the winter, but they looked so pretty in the yard that I kept them out all winter. Surprisingly, they have been going strong for over three years. They light the way through sleet and snow, and add a cozy ambiance to my patio and front porch.

When I received the new PIC insect killer torch to test, we were in a drought, and bugs were scarce. The PIC did its job on the first night, killing several insects. I haven’t been bitten by a mosquito in the three years that I’ve owned the torches.

Pros

  • Kills flying insects on contact
  • Doubles as a patio light
  • Aesthetically pleasing
  • Solar-powered
  • Environmentally friendly
  • Chemical-free
  • No open flame
  • Adjustable height
  • Weatherproof
  • 0.5-acre coverage
  • Easy to use
  • Maintenance-free

Cons

  • Torch pole may lean (according to some reviewers)
  • Debris tray may be hard to open

FAQ

How do you use the PIC insect killer torch?

Choose a sunny location for the torch for the best performance. Then, choose its height. Assemble the pole with the provided connectors, drive the stake into the ground with a rubber mallet to avoid breakage and put the assembled unit onto the stake. Assembly takes mere minutes. Or, you can forget the stake and pole and use it with the tabletop stand.

The last step is pushing the on button and letting it charge in the sun. That’s ityou never have to worry about it again! It automatically works when the sun goes down.

What Other Reviewers Had to Say

Real-life customers share what they think of their pest control purchase and, spoiler alert, the reviews are really good.

Verified purchaser, Gene Worrell, says, These are perfect for a tropical poolside ambiance feel. The flames are quite realistic. The bug zapper appears to work pretty well.

It works! exclaims Nick Phoenix, a five-star reviewer. After only one night I checked it the next day and there were bugs in the tray! It works! There was a mix of moths and mosquitoes and other bugs. I was hesitant on buying it, due to some reviews said it didnt do anything, but mine did. And I must admit it looks pretty cool at night.

“I bought this back in April of 2020. Up until last July of 2022, it was subjected to Arizona sun. In July of 2022, I moved to Michigan, and for the past two months it has been only getting the dreary Michigan, indirect light coming from a patio door and it is still working! I will be ordering several more to deal with the insects of Michigan,” shares another five-star reviewer, Sue Ellen Bowers.

Product Comparison

Compared to the bright, ugly and noisy high-powered electric bug zapper I bought for my mom years ago, I am amazed that the PIC insect killer captures moths and mosquitoes using only 600 watts of solar-powered energy without bait. In my mom’s case, we had to run electric cords across the lawn to place her electric bug zapper far enough away from her seating area. Not only was it problematic for mowing the lawn, but it was also a trip hazard. The solar-powered PIC torch, however, can be placed anywhere that it will receive sunlight. Plus, the brand offers a portable version with a convenient handle.

Final Verdict

Insect Killer Torch in the garden during the daytime

This silent killer is beautifully disguisedno noisy, clunky, ugly machine doing my dirty work. It’s eco-friendly and chemical-free, using the sun as its superpower. With three years of experience using the PIC insect killer torch, Im impressed with its performance and longevity.

Ive always loved the look of tiki torches, but dont enjoy dealing with the messy oil or smelly open flame. The PIC torch gives a realistic flickering fire effect without the hassle of a real torch. The light output is warm and lights up the area with a lovely ambiance.

Where to Buy the PIC Insect Killer Torch

How To Build a DIY Cat Wheel https://www.familyhandyman.com/project/diy-cat-wheel/ https://www.familyhandyman.com/project/diy-cat-wheel/#respond Thu, 13 Jul 2023 18:12:08 +0000 https://www.familyhandyman.com/?post_type=project&p=549358 Here's everything you need to make an exercise wheel for your feline friend.

The post How To Build a DIY Cat Wheel appeared first on Family Handyman.

]]>

If you’ve spent any time on the cat internet, you’ve probably seen a few cat wheels. Like their hamster wheel forebears, cat wheels spin on an axis or rest on a skateboard-wheel base. Internet cats, usually Bengals and other large breeds, happily exercise while their owners binge-watch Netflix.

I have a big chunk of a cat who could stand to lose a few pounds, so I decided to make a cat wheel. Although cardboard incarnations exist, I chose wood. A plywood wheel, pine lath running platform and 2×4 base practically guaranteed the whole thing wouldn’t collapse on my chubster.

Plywood and 2x4s were no problem. But after finding three stores sold out of wood lath, I thought about dowels. They’re strong, first of all. And when fitted and glued into the plywood backing, I figured they’d provide plenty of support for the carpet runway. Best of all, they were in stock.

Well. Dowels were a fine idea, but half-inchers were way too small and unwieldy to glue and clamp efficiently. If you decide to make this, go with one-inch dowels.

Also, before you jump in, know that cat wheels make noise at least this one does. I used a heavy-duty caster and roller ball bearing to support and roll the wheel, and that ball bearing on plywood is loud.

Instead, consider using two radial bearings and an axle for quieter operation.

Building a DIY cat wheel takes several days. I tried to iron out most of the kinks I encountered, but honestly, this is a labor of love.

Finally, there’s no guarantee your cat will use this. If your cat already enjoys running on a wheel, you’ll probably have more luck than I have so far. I’m not a fan of the no-reward frustration of laser pointers, but this time I made an exception, with marginal success.

It’s a fun project, though, and certainly a conversation piece. Let’s get started.

Cut plywood

  • Cut 4- by 8-ft. plywood into two 4- by 4-ft. pieces with a circular saw.
  • Find and mark the centers with your tape measure.
  • Make a compass out of cardboard to draw circles on 4- by 4-ft. plywood pieces:
    • Cut cardboard into a narrow strip longer than the radius of circle.
    • Attach one end to center of plywood with screw or nail.
    • Measure 21 inches from center, poke a hole for the pencil and draw a 42-in. circle with the compass.
  • Cut both plywood pieces into 42-in. circles using a jigsaw or router.
  • Adjust the compass radius and draw a 39-in. circle on one piece of plywood, and a 39-in. and 36-in. circle on the other.
  • Cut out the 36-in. circle, leaving a 6-in. ring of wood. Set aside the 36-in. circle to use for the base.

The EyeVac Home Vacuum Is Our Editor’s Pick for Eliminating Pet Hair and Dirt From Floors https://www.familyhandyman.com/article/eyevac/ Wed, 21 Jun 2023 19:45:46 +0000 This stationary EyeVac Home vacuum sucks up any debris you send its way, making dust pans and lingering pet hair a thing of the past.

The post The EyeVac Home Vacuum Is Our Editor’s Pick for Eliminating Pet Hair and Dirt From Floors appeared first on Family Handyman.

]]>
While we enjoy sharing our homes with our beloved pets, we dont exactly want our homes to look like we live with our pets (enter: essential cleaning tips for pet owners). Thankfully, the evolution of vacuum technology, including cordless and robotic options, has simplified the task of tidying up after our furry companions. Now, with the introduction of the EyeVac Home vacuum, we can eliminate dirt and pet hair rapidly and efficientlyall by just grabbing a broom.

Originally designed for salon owners to quickly pick up hair from floors, the EyeVac Home is now growing in popularity among pet owners who also want in on the convenienceand dare we say, fun? To rigorously put this stationary vacuum to the test with a variety of hair lengths and textures, we had Leslie Glenn, a hairstylist with over 45 years of experience, test out the vacuum. She has 10 to 15 clients who fill her private salon each week, and two dogs that work alongside her. After three months of testing, Glenn was delighted to find her new trusty companion was graciously tackling all the hair, fur and debris she sent its wayno dustpan required.

What is the EyeVac Home vacuum?

sweeping hair into eyevac

You’re probably accustomed to pushing around a pet vacuum cleaner throughout the house. The EyeVac Home sets itself apart by being stationary, so you don’t have to bring it out every time you wish to use it. With this handy unit, you simply sweep the mess towards it (which proves especially helpful for individuals with arthritis or back problems). The outcome? Swift and effortless cleanup one fell swoop, err, sweep.

With its sleek design and automatic sensor, it remains readily available at all times. It plugs right into any nook of your home or kitchenno batteries or charging dock required. From there, use the control dial on the side to choose between an auto or manual mode. The auto setting utilizes an activation sensor to automatically detect when debris is coming its way while the manual setting commands the press of a button to power the vacuum suction on or off.

“When it activates, it nabs the pile almost instantly,” says Glenn. “I was concerned that long hair would get tangled in it the way it does in the rollers of my upright vacuum, but it sucked up all lengths of hair (and dirt and pet fur) without issue.”

When the canister bin is full (dont worry, the indicator light will tell you), simply empty it out and put it back in. No bags required.

“This thing holds a lot!” raves Glenn. “I was expecting to have to empty it every week, but it ended up being every couple of weeks. Thats a huge pro for a stationary vacuum, which will likely sit in a place where theres constant mess to suck up.”

Some users report a slight performance issue with its ability to pick up dark-colored debris or when used on dark floors. It may require a bit of extra effort, so keep this in mind during use.

Editor's Pick

EyeVac Home Touchless Vacuum

This stationary vacuum features an infrared activation sensor, making it a completely touchless cleaning solution.

Product Features

The EyeVac Home Touchless Vacuum boasts a powerful 1,000-watt motor, delivering strong suction for effective household cleaning. Its manual and automatic modes allow users to easily switch between hands-on control and touchless operation. Thanks to its infrared activation sensor, the vacuum detects debris and engages automatically, providing a hands-free solution for daily messes.

Featuring a bagless 1-liter canister, the EyeVac is designed for easy emptying and upkeep. Compact and lightweight, measuring just 8 inches by 13 inches by 18 inches and weighing 7.6 pounds, its easy to move and place in different areas. Available in a variety of colors, it can complement any home dcor. The vacuum is equipped with high-efficiency filtration using two filters, helping capture dust and debris to maintain cleaner air in your home.

While EyeVacs filtration system efficiently handles general debris, it may not fully address allergens, as some models lack a True HEPA filter. Regularly emptying the canister and cleaning the filters is recommended to maintain optimal suction and prevent clogs, especially if allergy concerns are a factor in your cleaning routine.

As a stationary unit, the EyeVac excels in rooms with hard floors, such as kitchens and entryways, where dirt and debris tend to accumulate. However, its fixed position means it takes up some floor space, so its important to place it in a convenient spot where it can remain without frequent relocation.

Pros

  • Automatically senses movement, suctioning incoming debris
  • Strong suction power and works for even the smallest dirt particles
  • Aesthetic design with a small footprint
  • Large-capacity canister bin is easy to empty
  • Fairly priced
  • Filtration system removes dirt, dust and dander from the air
  • Sleek design and color options

Cons

  • Only works on hard floors
  • Loud
  • No suction timer settings
  • Small sensor range
  • Can be less responsive with dark floors or debris

FAQ

What Other Reviewers/Experts Had to Say

With nearly 9,000 five-star ratings, the EyeVac Home is one of Amazons best cleaning products, and it’s a must-have for anyone with furry roommates.

So I saw one of these at my hair dresser’s salon [and] decided to try one at home. I have four dogs, two of which shed a lot for being so small!” shares verified purchaser, Kathy D. “Put it in the den and it makes dog hair cleanup a lot easier (I hate cleaning floors!). Worked so well I bought another one for my bedroom.”

Heather, a five-star reviewer, writes, We have a Roomba that does a great job on our floors, but with three dogs in the house, I am still constantly sweeping. When we sweep the hair onto the dustpan and try to transfer it to the trash can, we can see hair flying back in to the house. We decided to give this vac a try. Let me just say it is well worth what we paid! Dirt, sand, dog hairnone of it escapes this vac.”

Another five-star reviewer, Melissa Slick, calls it the “best purchase ever,” and says, If you have a busy household that has animals or kids, this is definitely worth buying. Four dogs (one being a golden retriever) have me sweeping more than I would like to. I grab my broom and sweep it to canister and done! It has [the] option to have it automatically go on when your broom and debris are in front of it or you can do it manually.”

Final Verdict

The EyeVac Home is the answer to everyday messes that have you constantly reaching for the dustpan or lugging out the vacuum. Pet owners and hairstylists alike can attest to the amount of hair and fur that they have to sweep up or vacuum on a daily basis. But with the EyeVac Home, you only need to reach for the broom, as this trusty stationary vacuum takes care of the rest. It effectively suctions all types of hair and debris, plus, it serves as a canister to contain the mess in between emptying.

Another bonus? The EyeVac, though similar sounding to a regular vacuum, operates more efficiently. “Youll definitely know if the EyeVac is working, because its about as loud as a standing vacuum,” explains Glenn. “Unlike other vacuums, though, it only runs for around five seconds at a time when the motion sensor activates.”

Product Comparison

If your home has multiple pets or deals with larger debris, consider more powerful EyeVac options like the Pro and Pet models. These upgraded versions feature a stronger 1400-watt motor, compared to the Home model’s 1000 watts, and offer larger canister capacity, reducing the need for frequent emptying in high-traffic or pet-heavy areas.

It's cute and colorful, but not as sturdy as I — and my 20-pound cat — would like.

This DIY cat hammock could never be called flimsy. It's made from strong but inexpensive 2x4s, crosshatched together at the base. Dowel rods hold the hammock. The best thing about it? It didn't take a bunch of complicated cuts. I kept mine low-key, but you can spruce it up with paint, stain or decals.

Tips on How To Clean Aquarium Sand https://www.familyhandyman.com/article/how-to-clean-aquarium-sand/ Fri, 09 Jun 2023 14:28:26 +0000 https://www.familyhandyman.com/?p=547318 Cleaning aquarium sand is a cinch with a straightforward siphon, but these expert tips will ensure you don't disrupt your aquarium's delicate balance.

The post Tips on How To Clean Aquarium Sand appeared first on Family Handyman.

]]>
Sand is an aesthetically pleasing, affordable and practical substrate. It’s especially useful when you’ve got bottom-feeding or burrowing inhabitants in your tank. And, contrary to popular belief, cleaning aquarium sand isn’t difficult. All you need is a gravel siphon, and you’re good to go.

Professional aquarist Michelle Lowry says sand substrates are especially common in saltwater tanks, and the different uses depend on the tank setup. “Some coral reef keepers opt for deep sand beds to incorporate anaerobic breakdown of nitrogenous waste,” she says. “In other situations, there would be a shallow sand bed.”

The right cleaning technique depends on the depth of the sand. “The only reason cleaning the sand will cause an issue is if the sand bed is more than three inches deep,” says professional aquarist Chris Meckley.

Read on for expert-approved tips on how to clean aquarium sand safely and effectively.

Avoid Unnecessarily Deep Sand Substrates

Unless you opt for a deep sand bed for burrowing inhabitants, a particular aesthetic, or as an additional natural filtration system, it’s best to stick with around one to two inches.

Deep sand beds (typically over five inches) promote the growth of anaerobic bacteria that converts nitrate into harmless nitrogen.

“The first two to three inches of sand will be filled with aerobic bacteria, and anything below will be anaerobic [lacking in oxygen],” Meckley says. “If anaerobic bacteria are disturbed, this can cause issues in the main aquarium by releasing sulfur and other harmful compounds formed in the dead zone.”

That makes cleaning a deep sand bed much more open to pitfalls.

Siphon Thin Sand Beds During a Water Change

The easiest way to clean aquarium sand is with a gravel vacuum while changing out the water. “This way, the vacuum can just expel everything not wanted as water is drained,” Meckley says.

The steps below guide you through cleaning aquarium sand that’s no deeper than three inches.

1. Turn off filters and pumps

You don’t want filters running dry as the water levels lower.

2. Remove decorations

Tank decorations can harbor detritus on or under their surfaces, and removing them gives you a clear substrate surface to work with. Clean these items while they are out of the tank.

Leave live plants and fish in the tank where possible and carefully work around them. That way, you don’t have to worry about disturbing delicate roots or unnecessarily stressing inhabitants.

3. Siphon away surface debris

Grab your gravel siphon (aka a gravel or sand vacuum) to remove surface debris. Be aware the steps below are a guide for a basic pump siphon. Exact instructions vary depending on the siphon model you purchase.

  • Put the hose end of the siphon in a large bucket positioned below the tank.
  • Lower the suction end of the siphon into the water, being careful to avoid any small fish. Pinch the manual pump five times or so to start the water flowing into the bucket.
  • Hover the suction nozzle over the surface of the sand. Work methodically across the sand to pick up debris.
  • Once you’ve collected as much debris as you can, cover the top of the tube with your hand. This stops the suction action and saves debris from returning to the tank. Manually empty the remaining tube of water into the bucket.
  • Ideally, don’t let water levels drop by more than 25%. Introducing too much new water at once can be bad for your fish.
  • Depending on your tank size, you might not clean the full substrate before the water level gets too low. But you can always pick up where you left off during your next water change.

4. Return your tank to normal

Pop those cleaned decorations back into the tank. Slowly introduce new water. Don’t forget to turn on the filters and pumps.

Regularly Siphon Thin Sand Beds

Meckley says stirring things up at least monthly prevents the sand from absorbing a buildup of harmful phosphates produced during waste breakdown. It also keeps it from turning into a hard brick.

Exactly how often you siphon your sand depends on the tank size, the number of inhabitants and the type of sand.

“If it is coarse, it will need to be vacuumed or stirred more frequently, because it acts as a catch for anything small enough to fit between each piece of crushed coral or coarse sand,” Meckley says. “Fine sand has the same issue, but takes a little longer to catch enough particles.”

Clean a Deep Sand Substrate Carefully

When cleaning a deep sand substrate, it’s important to not disturb things below the surface. Doing so can release harmful compounds. Ensure the siphon is always above the surface of the substrate and never dug inside it. And don’t rake or stir.

Introduce Sand-Sifting Fish for Cleaning

Some sand-sifting tank inhabitants can aid in aquarium sand cleaning. These include catfish, sand-sifting gobies, loaches, cherry or ghost shrimp and ramshorn snails. They won’t replace siphoning, but can offer a helping hand.

Some burrowing microorganisms also expand the aerobic layer within deep sand beds and eat detritus at deeper levels. These include Californian blackworms, Malayan trumpet snails and planarian flatworms.

Always check that the species are suitable for the type and size of your aquarium and that they’re compatible with your existing tank dwellers.

Cherry barb

Cherry Barbs

Freshwater fish conservationist Lily Hwang is a fan of vibrant red cherry barbs (Puntius titteya). She says while these shy schooling fish can be a little nippy, they tend to be healthier than many in-bred or mass-produced guppies and bettas.

Hwang recommends keeping them in a tank with some decorations and live plants, in groups of at least six. “Larger groups provide a sense of security and reduce stress,” she says.

Cherry barbs are undemanding. “Offer a varied diet consisting of high-quality flake or pellet food formulated for tropical fish,” Hwang says. She adds these peaceful fish do well with other non-aggressive species like tetras, rasboras or peaceful dwarf cichlids.

How Long Will Fleas Live In a House Without Pets? https://www.familyhandyman.com/article/how-long-will-fleas-live-in-a-house-without-pets/ Fri, 19 May 2023 17:43:23 +0000 https://www.familyhandyman.com/?p=539796 It may surprise you to learn the many ways fleas can take up residence in a pet-free home. Experts explain how these pests get in.

The post How Long Will Fleas Live In a House Without Pets? appeared first on Family Handyman.

]]>
Walking through their new home should have been an exciting experience for my parents. However, they unknowingly bought a house with a flea infestation, even though it had been vacant for quite a while. Apparently, fleas can live in a home, even without pets.

We spoke with pest control experts to learn how an infestation can happen in a pet-free home, and how long these parasites can live there.

How Do Fleas Get Into Homes Without Pets?

Fleas can infest your house in several ways. Here are the most common scenarios:

  • Carried in by other animals: Frank Meek, a board-certified entomologist and technical services manager for Orkin, says a mouse, rat or squirrel can bring them in. Even if the animal is trapped and removed, the fleas can stay behind. “The fleas that previously fed on it are forced to focus their feeding activity on other hosts that reside in the home,” he says.

  • Attaching themselves to various materials: “[Fleas] have the ability to jump as high as six inches,” Meek says. “They can easily hitch a ride from place to place, and they’re able to attach themselves to clothing, bedding or furniture.”

  • Dormant flea larvae: “Developing fleas in the larval stage can stay dormant for months, emerging when they detect a food source,” says Nancy Troyano, Ph.D., director of operations, education and training and a board certified entomologist with Rentokil. “Therefore, if a rental unit has an untreated flea infestation but is then emptied of people and pets, the flea larvae in cocoons can remain dormant for six to 12 months, waiting until they detect a host.”

How Can You Tell if Fleas Are in Your Home?

Here are the most common signs Meek says to watch for:

  • Bug bites on your body: Bites on the legs and ankles of human victims are usually a common indicator. Flea bites result in red spots surrounded by reddened halos. They’re extremely itchy and cause great discomfort.

  • Adult flea feces: Sometimes called flea dirt, you’ll find it on carpets and rugs. It looks like course ground black pepper.

  • You’ll actually see them: Adult fleas are relatively easy to see. In more extreme cases, when occupants of the home return after a long vacation or other absence, they’re often greeted by fleas jumping around and trying to land on them.

  • You find eggs: Larvae and pupae may appear in out-of-the-way places, like under baseboards, inside cracks and grooves in the floors, or around the edge of the carpet.

How Long Will Fleas Live in a Home Without Pets?

Meek told us adult fleas could live for up to 12 months in the right conditions.

“As long as there is a host to feed on, untreated flea infestations will continue to thrive,” Troyano says. “The most common flea that we see infesting homes in the U.S. is the cat flea, Ctenocephalides felis, with cats, dogs and other mammals such as raccoons as their preferred host. These fleas will readily bite humans to feed but cannot proliferate on humans alone.”

Besides bites and allergic reactions, fleas pose other risks. “Fleas are also an intermediate host for tapeworms and are commonly associated with tapeworm infections in pets and, occasionally, people,” Trovano says. “Fleas can also transmit diseases such as plague in places where these diseases are endemic.”

How To Get Rid of Fleas

Meek says getting rid of fleas means targeting the root of the problem.

“Upon identifying an infestation, it’s important to clean your home thoroughly,” he says. “Linens, floors and carpets should all be cleaned and vacuumed.

“Flea management may require the use of both conventional insecticide products as well as flea repellents. It’s important to contact your local pest control expert to discuss customized solutions for your home and extermination options.”

Troyano also warns eliminating flea infestations is a complex process.

“There are over-the-counter products that can potentially be effective in lighter infestations,” she says. “However, products such as `flea bombs’ may wind up dispersing fleas to a wider area rather than killing them. Insecticides used to treat fleas should include ones that are effective at killing adults as well as larvae.”

Trovano recommends hiring a pro for treatment. “Pest control professionals are trained to apply the right combination of insecticides to the right places,” she says. “However, they do need the help of the homeowner to vacuum several times a day after treatment in order to stimulate the fleas to emerge from their cocoons to contact the insecticide.”

Also, Trovano says, seal up any foundation-level cracks or access points, whether you have a crawl space or a full basement. Check under decks as well. Simple exclusion techniques like screening can go a long way.

What To Know About Orthopedic Dog Beds https://www.familyhandyman.com/article/orthopedic-dog-beds/ Thu, 18 May 2023 21:08:38 +0000 https://www.familyhandyman.com/?p=542299 Dogs of any size and age can benefit from some extra support. Discover how an orthopedic dog bed can ease your dog's sore joints.

The post What To Know About Orthopedic Dog Beds appeared first on Family Handyman.

]]>
While 86% of pups have a dog bed, only 18% of their pet parents prioritize orthopedic qualities, according to the 2023-2024 American Pet Products Association National Pet Owners Survey.

Perhaps they should.A study by The University of Pennsylvania shows orthopedic beds play a significant role in alleviating joint pain, enhancing mobility and improving the overall quality of life for our canine companions.

Here’s what to know about the benefits of orthopedic dog beds, plus how to pick the best dog bed for your pup.

What Is an Orthopedic Dog Bed?

Whether you own a senior dog or a younger one with joint problems, you can make your home and lifestyle more comfortable for them. Aging dogs and those with inherited joint disorders can suffer from arthritis and other conditions that also affect humans.

Orthopedic beds use layers of cushioning and specialty foam to support your dog’s joints, spine and neck, reducing pressure. Memory foam is an ideal material, but not all memory foam beds are orthopedic grade.

Unfortunately, there are no regulations or certifications that “prove” a bed is orthopedic. However, choosing a CertiPUR-US Certified bed indicates a third-party non-profit organization verified the foam meets quality standards for emissions, content, performance and durability.

Do Dogs Need Orthopedic Beds?

When your dog needs more joint support, an orthopedic dog bed can help. They’re ideal for dogs with arthritis and joint pain, or those healing from surgery or an injury.

Before using an orthopedic dog bed, talk to your veterinarian. They might suggest other ways to manage your dog’s pain.

Choosing an Orthopedic Dog Bed

Not all orthopedic dog beds are made the same. Here are some key features to consider, depending on your dog’s needs.

  • Size: Dogs come in all shapes and sizes. Luckily, so do orthopedic beds. Select one your dog can comfortably lay on. If they’re hanging over the edge of the bed, it’s too small.
  • Materials: The bed should be thick, but your dog shouldn’t sink into it. They should have a certain level of firmness. Two popular materials are memory foam and egg-crate foam.
  • Safety considerations: Look for a bed with a bottom that prevents your dog from slipping when they lay down or get up. If your dog is prone to chewing, look for one that can stand up to teeth and paws.
  • Design: These vary. Flat orthopedic beds are easy for dogs to get in and out of, but they don’t have neck support. If your dog needs or prefers neck support, a bolster-style bed might be better for them.
  • Ease of cleaning: This is important. Consider a water-resistant bed with a removable cover that can be thrown in the washing machine.

Best Orthopedic Dog Beds

We’ve selected four highly-rated models that are supportive, durable and safe.

Best Cooling Orthopedic Dog Bed

sealy Lux Pet Dog Bed

If you live in a warm climate, consider the Sealy Lux Pet Dog Bed. It features three layers of orthopedic foam: Two to take pressure off joints, and one of charcoal foam that absorbs dog odors.

Unlike other orthopedic beds, this also comes with a gel layer that dissipates heat, keeping your dog cool. Other features of this bolster bed include a removable, machine-washable cover; waterproof liner; and a non-slip base. Choose from four sizes, from small to extra-large.

Best Orthopedic Bed for Large Dogs

Bedsure Jumbo Dog Bed

The Bedsure Jumbo Dog Bed is one of the largest models, measuring 54 inches long by 44 inches wide. It also comes in smaller sizes, ranging from XS to XXL.

It’s like having two beds in one, with cozy Sherpa fabric on one side and cool Oxford fabric on the other, plus CertiPUR-US egg-crate foam in between. The XXL model is reasonably priced for its size, at about $80. No wonder this bed earned a 4.6-star rating on Amazon with more than 40,000 reviews.

Best Orthopedic Bed with Neck Support

Big Barker Orthopedic Dog Bed With Headrest

For dogs who prefer a little extra support, look no further than the Big Barker Orthopedic Dog Bed with Headrest. This plush bed boasts a generous seven-inch thickness and three layers of orthopedic foam for ultimate comfort.

The exceptional warranty guarantees 90% retention of shape and thickness for 10 years. Moreover, it stands out as one of the few models with clinically proven orthopedic benefits.

Best Budget Orthopedic Dog Bed

How To Get Rid of Fleas On a Dog Naturally https://www.familyhandyman.com/article/how-to-get-rid-of-fleas-on-dog/ Thu, 18 May 2023 16:36:53 +0000 https://www.familyhandyman.com/?p=542010 Get rid of fleas on a dog naturally with our tried and tested remedies. Find out which expert-recommended products work best for your pets, home and yard.

The post How To Get Rid of Fleas On a Dog Naturally appeared first on Family Handyman.

]]>
I don’t give my dogs or cats conventional flea preventatives. These very products inspired me to become a master herbalist.

Many years ago, our veterinarian prescribed my young terrier a single flea and tick tablet from a big brand. A few hours later, we were in the emergency veterinary clinic. My boy had a bad reaction to the tablet and was fighting for his life.

Thankfully, he survived. But it made me more aware of what I was putting on and in him. In the 12 years since this harrowing incident, my dogs have never had fleas and only picked up three ticks between them. I’ve never applied a chemical flea product, and never will.

Instead, I spoke with holistic veterinarians and did my own research. Through my experience with herbs, I found some widely available natural products and came up with my own remedies to get rid of fleas on a dog naturally. Luckily, this also keeps fleas away to begin with.

My dog’s reaction to oral flea medication isn’t super common. But it happens often enough that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) released a fact sheet about the potential adverse effects of these medications in the isoxazoline class.

It’s worth noting a bad reaction can happen at any time, even if your dog was fine on the drug previously. The same goes for topical products. The Environmental Protection Agency warned pet owners about the potential risks of spot-on flea and tick products.

For me, it really comes down to not wanting to give my dog pesticides when there are safer natural alternatives. Here, I’ll share some of my tried and tested favorite natural flea control methods.

Best Natural Remedies to Keep Fleas Off Your Dog

Though there are great natural alternatives, know you’ll likely need a multi-pronged approach. I treat my yard, pets and home to make my whole property and everyone on it as unattractive to fleas as possible.

Here are some options:

Cedarwood

This is one of my favorite preventatives and killers. The strong scent of cedar repels all kinds of crawling, biting pests, from fleas to ants. And it kills them on contact, too, since the oil suffocates them.

Quite a few cedar products aimed at fleas and ticks are safe for dogs, cats and humans. Before walks during peak flea season, my go-to is Cedarcide Original spray. The same brand also makes sprays for home use, as well as outdoor sprays, mulches and granules. I even use the spray on the lawn to get rid of ants, because they’re prolific here.

Diatomaceous earth

Diatomaceous earth (DE) is a non-toxic, natural way to control fleas on dogs. Made from the fossilized remains of tiny aquatic organisms called diatoms, it destroys the exoskeletons of fleas, making them dehydrate and die.

Make sure you only use food-grade diatomaceous earth. Sprinkle it on your dog’s bedding, carpets and other areas where fleas may be hiding. You can brush it into your dog’s coat for added protection, avoiding the head, eyes and face. Warning: It’s drying and shouldn’t be inhaled by you or your pets.

I like DE because it’s safe for cats as well as dogs, and you can use it outside to kill infestations of fleas, ticks, ants and other insects in your yard.

Natural flea sprays

There are quite a few good options on the market. And, of course, you can make your own, if you know what you’re doing.

You’ll need to experiment some, because I’ve found over the years that different products work for different dogs and locations. What works well one year might not be so effective the next.

I tend to make my own blend, a really simple recipe that involves no essential oil:

Ingredients

  • One quart water;
  • 1/2-cup apple cider vinegar with the mother;
  • One generous sprig of fresh rosemary;
  • One generous sprig of fresh sage;
  • One generous sprig of lavender;
  • One generous sprig of lemongrass (optional).

Steps

  • Put everything except the apple cider vinegar into a saucepan. Cover with a lid and bring to a boil.
  • Once the mixture boils, turn off the heat and let it steep and cool in the saucepan overnight.
  • In the morning, strain out and compost the herbs, then add the apple cider vinegar to the herb-infused water.
  • Decant into a spray bottle and refrigerate.

This lasts up to two weeks in the refrigerator. You can apply it to your dog’s coat before every walk. You can also use it on their bedding as an extra layer of protection.

I’ve also tried a few products when I’ve been short on time or away from home. Vet-formulated Kin+Kind has been a pretty good repellent.

From the inside out

There are two parts to the idea of making your dogs uninhabitable from the inside. First, you need really good nutrition and gut health. As a canine nutritionist, I feed my dogs a balanced, species-appropriate diet and boost gut health with a good probiotic.

For my guys I use Adored Beast, a solid, species-appropriate blend. But if your dogs are fussy with powders, try probiotic chews. Healthy animals are less prone to parasites.

Plus, you can make your dog taste bad to fleas by feeding it garlic daily. No, garlic is not bad for dogs. That’s a myth from a study in the ’80s that has since been repeatedly discredited.

Coconut oil

Coconut oil rubbed into your dog’s skin kills fleas due to the high concentration of lauric acid. Also nourishing for your dog’s skin and coat, it’s a good option to alternate with DE. So during flea season, I’d do DE one week, then coconut oil the following week.

Grooming

A dog taking a shower with soap and water

A good, natural flea shampoo combined with the old-fashioned flea comb eliminates any fleas that made it past your defenses. Just remember not to bathe your dogs too often. If you do, you’ll dry out their coat and mess with their pH balance, making them more susceptible to fleas.

Natural collars and spot-ons

You can find a wide range of natural flea collars and spot-on products for dogs. Some work well, while others are dubious at best.

If you want to go this route, make sure you research the ingredients so you know they’re safe. The Dr. Mercola brand offers safe, good-quality products. If you’re not sure, start there. I’ve used their natural flea collars and spot-on for dogs with good results.

General Yard and Home Maintenance

In the yard, use flea-killing nematodes, tiny parasitic worms that attack flea eggs and larvae. You can also try Cedarcide and DE, as mentioned above. Whichever you choose, apply in places where your dogs hang out the most, or where you know you’ve got a persistent problem.

Go with cedar mulch in flower beds. Keep your lawn short and the yard generally tidy and free of debris.

Inside your home, vacuum. A lot. If you’ve got an herbal flea collar, cut off an extra piece and put it inside your vacuum bag or canister to kill fleas and eggs you suck up.

Regular vacuuming does wonders in the fight against fleas. It’s also a good idea to regularly wash your pet’s bedding and spray it with a nice, natural repellent.

How To Keep Dogs From Digging Under the Fence https://www.familyhandyman.com/article/how-to-keep-dogs-from-digging-under-fence/ Tue, 16 May 2023 20:30:07 +0000 https://www.familyhandyman.com/?p=541140 Find out what motivates dogs to dig under fences and how you can get them to stop with some simple tips and positive training techniques.

The post How To Keep Dogs From Digging Under the Fence appeared first on Family Handyman.

]]>
My dogs love digging in the yard. My old terrier attacks molehills with vigor, and my whippet digs because she’s a lunatic. When she was younger, she liked to dig on the fence line, and I was always worried she would get out one day.

Turns out, she wasn’t trying to escape. She was just trying to dig up the mice and other critters making their homes along our rural property boundary.

Dogs dig under fences for lots of reasons, and there are plenty of non-aversive ways to get them to stop. The key: Training them positively and reinforcing the behavior you want. Let’s take a look at some of the most effective ways to stop dogs from digging under the fence.

Create a Digging Zone

Dog behaviorist expert and trainer Lizzy Scollo, creater of the It’s For Life Dog Training website, says dogs dig for various reasons.

“You may be surprised to learn that you can correct digging with digging!” she says. “One dog may dig for a cool place to chill on a hot summer day. Another dog may dig to burn off some pent-up energy … If you can give your dog an appropriate digging place, this could solve your problem while fulfilling their need.”

Scollo suggests burying some of your dog’s toys and bones in a sandbox. Letting your pup dig them up, she says, can be enriching while burning off some energy.

“If they go to dig in another area of the yard,” she says, “you can redirect them by bringing them to the sandbox and then heavily reinforce them with high-value treats for digging in the right place!”

This is my preferred method, too. I put a large kids’ sandbox in my yard and filled it with play sand. My dogs can dig in there as much as they like.

I also let them dig in the part of the yard where we have moles. This is a great natural mole deterrent; eventually, the moles take the hint and leave.

I’m not fussy about my yard. It’s more of a semi-wild space for pollinators and an enrichment zone for my dogs. However, if you prefer a pristine lawn, then redirecting your dog from the fence or the wider yard to a dedicated digging zone like a sandbox is the perfect solution.

Install a Digging Barrier

Burying a digging barrier at the base of the fence is a really smart option when you can’t always be outside with your dogs or you’re struggling with training and redirection. It’s labor-intensive, but it works.

Materials and tools

  • Barrier material (chicken wire, hardware cloth or concrete pavers);
  • Shovel;
  • Gloves;
  • Wire cutters.

Steps

  • Choose a barrier material.
  • Dig a trench around the perimeter of the fence, one to two feet deep.
  • Install the barrier material at the base of the fence, extending it into the trench.
  • Fill the trench with soil and pack it down firmly.

Address Your Dog’s Needs

This may sound obvious, but your dog could be digging under the fence because of unfulfilled needs. They could have pent-up energy, lack mental stimulation, be bored or feel anxiety.

Like us, our canine buddies are sentient beings with emotions and physical and mental needs. So take a look at your dog’s behavior and see if you can identify any triggers.

Does the digging happen when you haven’t had time to take your dog for a decent walk? Have you been busy or out at work all day, leaving your dog without significant interaction or mental stimulation? If you’re not sure, see a positive dog trainer or behaviorist who can help you and your dog.

Materials and tools

  • Dog toys and puzzles or a snuffle mat for mental stimulation.
  • Treats for training and positive reinforcement.
  • Professional assistance (veterinarian or behaviorist).

Steps

  • Ensure your dog is getting enough physical exercise and mental stimulation to alleviate boredom and anxiety.
  • Consult with a veterinarian or behaviorist to address medical or behavioral issues that may be causing the digging.
  • Train your dog using positive reinforcement techniques to discourage digging and encourage desired behaviors.

Use Landscape Design to Your Advantage

Sometimes, you need a little creativity. So why not beautify your garden and deter your dog’s digging antics at the same time?

Materials and tools

  • Shrubs, decorative rocks, mulch or gravel;
  • Gardening tools (shovel, gloves, etc.);
  • Raised garden beds or other landscape features.

Steps:

Install a Privacy Fence

If you have an open-style fence, like chain link, consider adding a screen or replacing it with a privacy fence.

A see-through fence lets your dog observe fun and interesting stuff outside of your yard. A privacy fence blocks the view, making it far less tempting for your dog to dig under, particularly if you redirect their digging urge as well.

Materials and tools

  • Tape measuring;
  • Fence panels and posts;
  • Gate and gate hardware (if needed);
  • Post hole digger or auger;
  • Concrete mix;
  • Level;
  • Hammer or power drill;
  • Nails or screws;
  • Sealant or stain (optional);
  • Paintbrush or sprayer (optional).

Steps

  1. Measure your yard to determine the amount of fencing needed and mark where each post will go.
  2. Clear the fence line of obstacles and use string to ensure the fence line is straight.
  3. Dig the post holes to about one-third the length of the post.
  4. Place the post in the hole, ensuring it’s level.
  5. Fill with concrete and let it set.
  6. Fill the rest of the hole with dirt.
  7. Attach the fence panels to the posts, ensuring each panel is level.
  8. If including a gate, install the gate posts and hang the gate, ensuring it’s level and swings freely.
  9. Install a latch or lock.
  10. If a wooden fence, consider sealing or staining for added durability.

Can Dogs Get Ticks in Their Mouths? https://www.familyhandyman.com/article/ticks-in-dogs-mouth/ Tue, 09 May 2023 15:34:52 +0000 https://www.familyhandyman.com/?p=539239 You perform routine tick checks on your dog, but you could be neglecting an important area—your dog's mouth. But can dogs get ticks in their mouths?

The post Can Dogs Get Ticks in Their Mouths? appeared first on Family Handyman.

]]>
With spring in high gear and summer on the horizon, it’s time to be vigilant about tick searches after any outdoor excursions. To keep your dog safe this summer and beyond, you should check your pup for pesky ticks that carry diseases.

Ticks are ectoparasiteswhich means they’re parasites that live outside of a host and can easily climb aboard your dog without Fido noticing. When they bite your dog, they can transmit diseases like canine ehrlichiosis, Lyme disease and canine anaplasmosiswhich the American Kennel Club states can pose a serious threat to humans and dogs.

Unfortunately, ticks are commonplace in many U.S. states, and several species affect dogs. Per PetMD, these species are active at different times of the year, so regularly checking your dog for ticks will help keep them safe. People in specific states are at even greater risk, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), so be sure to assess the level of risk in your area. Ticks may appear on your dog’s hindquarters, front legs, torso or ears, to name a few places, but can dogs get ticks in their mouths? Here’s what your regular tick checks should include.

While you’re at it, also explore how to safely remove ticks.

Can Dogs Get Ticks In Their Mouths?

The Tick Attached To The gums of an animal

Yep, dogs can get ticks in their mouths, and when they do, ticks may get under your dog’s gums or between their teeth. So when examining your dog’s mouth, leave no spot unturned, including their cheeks, tongue and gums.

According to UK-based pet insurance company Scratch and Patch, you should “check for anything that looks like food caught in the teeth as, in some cases, these dark splotches are well-concealed ticks.”

How Do You Get a Tick Out of a Dog’s Mouth?

The procedure will be much the same as it would be if you found a tick anywhere else on your dog. First, get some tweezers and grasp the tick as close to the skin as possible. Then, give it a gentle pull upward or opposite the direction it burrowed in. Removing the tick quickly is the best course of action to prevent the potential spread of disease.

If your dog is exposed to heavily wooded areas and other environments ticks thrive in, you may want to invest in a tick removal product, such as The Original Tick Key.

Once you’ve removed a tick, monitor your dog for signs of tick-borne disease. According to the CDC, it’s important to watch your dog for any behavioral or appetite changes if you’re suspicious of a tick bite, as “signs of tick-borne disease may not appear for 7-21 days or longer after a tick bite.”

Tips for Tick Prevention in Dogs

You should be aware of your surroundings and perform regular tick checks to prevent ticks from hitchhiking on your pup.

But you can also undertake these preventative measures to keep your dog safe:

  • Understand the differences between fleas and ticks and how they affect your dog
  • If your backyard or home has a tick infestation, you may want to treat the area with a pesticide. Consult a professional before doing so.
  • Talk to your veterinarian about preventative measures, such as tick control treatments.
  • Make sure your dog receives an annual test for any tick-borne diseases
  • Ask your vet about common tick-borne diseases in your area
  • If needed, try to lessen or remove a tick habitat in your yard or property by frequently mowing your lawn and keeping your space clear of leaf litter.
  • Check your dog for ticks after every outdoor excursion. It’s tedious, but if you catch a tick on your dog before it bites, you’ve just prevented the potential spread of a tick-borne disease.

As you plan your outdoor activities, remember these prevention tips to keep your dog and your family safe from these dangerous ectoparasites.
