Gas Chainsaw

How to Start a Gas Chainsaw

The biggest favor you can do for yourself with a gas chainsaw is to follow a regular maintenance schedule, including cleaning the air, fuel and oil filters. “A gas chainsaw that is properly maintained is not hard to start, but most issues arise with that properly maintained part,” says master arborist Lisa Tadewaldt.

Safety precautions: Before you try to start any chainsaw, stay safe by making sure the chain brake is on and that you’ve positioned the saw on the ground. Once it’s running, practice other safety precautions, including:

  • Always keep two hands on the chainsaw.
  • Wear cut-resistant PPE, including chainsaw chaps and eye and hearing protection.
  • Wear long-sleeve shirts and pants to protect yourself from flying debris and hot parts of the chainsaw.
  • Do not push your limits. Hire a professional arborist if you’re uncertain of your skills.

Before starting your saw, have the proper fuel on hand, which is a mix of unleaded gas and 2-cycle engine oil, or a ready-made chainsaw fuel mix. Kaustubh Deo, President at Blooma Tree Experts, also recommends using high-octane ethanol-free unleaded gas to optimize performance. And don’t forget to have some bar oil on hand, which is essential for lubricating the bar-chain action.

How to start a gas chainsaw will vary slightly depending on your make and model, so refer to your owner’s manual for directions specific to your saw. In general, when starting a cold engine:

  • Check to make sure the saw has enough fuel and bar oil.
  • Turn the chain brake off and then back on to make sure it’s properly engaged. You should hear a click when the brake is back on, and the lever should be away from the operator, toward the bar.
  • Press the decompression valve on your saw if it has one.
  • If your saw has a purge bubble, press it four to eight times and visually check that it is mostly filled with fuel.
  • Turn the chainsaw on and put the choke in the on position. Instead of a choke, older saws might have positions for cold start, warm start, run and off. The choke is only needed when the saw engine is cold.
  • Get into the proper starting position with the saw on the ground. Bend over with your right foot on the handle to hold the saw down, your left hand on the handle pushing down, and your right hand on the pull-cord handle.
  • Pull the cord two or three times. “You will want to first slowly pull out any slack in your pull cord and then pull the pull cord in a short fast pull,” says Tadewaldt. “Pull it once or twice until you hear the chainsaw attempt to start.”
  • Then turn off the choke or put it in the warm start position so you don’t flood the saw. If you have a decompression button, press it one more time to “burp” the saw.
  • Pull the cord in a short, fast motion until it starts.
  • Once started, pull in the throttle to put the saw in idle mode before moving it to your cutting position.

How to Start a Gas Chainsaw If It’s Flooded

A flooded chainsaw means the carburetor has been filled with too much gas. “The only way to flood the saw is to leave the choke on too long,” says Tadewaldt.

If you’ve flooded it, Tadewaldt recommends taking off the air filter and waiting for the fuel to evaporate and the filter to dry.

You can also try laying the saw on its side for a while with the air cover off, says Deo. “It basically needs to breathe for a bit so that there isn’t such a rich mix in the carburetor,” he says.

How To Tighten a Chainsaw Chain https://www.familyhandyman.com/project/how-to-tighten-a-chainsaw-chain/ https://www.familyhandyman.com/project/how-to-tighten-a-chainsaw-chain/#respond Tue, 15 Oct 2024 18:02:17 +0000 https://www.familyhandyman.com/?post_type=project&p=639514 Proper chain tension is key to optimal chainsaw cutting and safety. While it may seem intimidating at first, tightening the chain on a chainsaw is actually quite simple once you know the steps. I used to avoid using my chainsaw because I didn't feel confident tightening the chain. But after receiving some helpful advice from a neighbor, it quickly became just another maintenance task I could easily tackle.

In this guide, we'll provide you with a comprehensive, step-by-step process for tightening a chainsaw chain, with expert tips from Bob Cain from Bob's Small Engine Repair and Jason Smith from Westfield Equipment Service.

How Tight Should a Chainsaw Chain Be?

A chainsaw chain should be tight but not too tight. When properly tightened, the chain should pull away from the guide about 3/16-inch. It should also move freely across the bar without falling off. "As you tighten it, stop and pull the chain. It shouldn't come down very far off the bar," Cain says.

Safety Precautions

To avoid burns, wait until the chainsaw has cooled before attempting to tighten the chain. Always engage the brake and wear gloves when tightening and check for proper tightness before using the saw.

When to Call a Pro

Smith recommends taking your chainsaw to a professional "anytime it's not cutting as it should." He says this includes if the saw is cutting sideways, smokes more than usual or produces more saw dust than wood chips. "It may be time to swap the chain, and it's best to bring it to a pro," he adds. If you're unsure of how to tighten a chainsaw chain and do not feel confident in your ability, bring it to a pro for tightening.

Loosen the Bar Nuts
  • Engage the brake.
  • Locate the two nuts securing the chainsaw bar in place.
  • Use an adjustable wrench to loosen both nuts slightly. A quarter turn is usually enough. You’ll know the bar nuts are loose enough when you can move the chainsaw bar up and down freely.

The DR Leaf and Lawn Vacuum is as Convenient as it is Efficient https://www.familyhandyman.com/article/dr-leaf-and-lawn-vacuum-review/ Tue, 01 Oct 2024 15:24:09 +0000 https://www.familyhandyman.com/?p=637736 We tried the DR Leaf and Lawn Vacuum, and it's the fastest, most convenient way to keep your yard free from debris all season long.

The post The DR Leaf and Lawn Vacuum is as Convenient as it is Efficient appeared first on Family Handyman.

]]>
Fall has officially arrived, which means you’ll soon be dedicating hours to lawn cleanup. That is unless you happen to have one of the best leaf vacuums on hand. Of course, you could rely on your trusty old rake or leaf blower to get the job done, but a leaf vacuum can save you tons of time.

Unlike a leaf blower which blows leaves into manageable piles, a leaf vacuum sucks up leaves and other small debris from your lawn and condenses them intobags for quick and easy cleanup. Many leaf vacuums also mulch everything they suck up, making for easy disposal.

We tested almost a dozen different leaf vacuums and were especially impressed by the quick work the DR Leaf and Lawn Vacuum made of cleaning up over 30 gallons of leaves. This walk-behind machine has the ability to clean up your yard in no time, leaving you free to enjoy all that this season has to offer. We’re talking trips to the pumpkin patch, cider donuts and cool nights outside at the bonfire. Heres everything you need to know about the DR Leaf and Lawn Vacuum.

What is the DR Leaf and Lawn Vacuum?

TheDR Leaf and Lawn Vacuum is a gas-powered, walk-behind leaf vacuumsimilar to apush mower. Its powerfulsuction allows it to clean up huge piles of leaves and other backyard debris.

In spite of its bulk and weightit weighs 120 poundsthis machine is surprisingly easy to assemble. It arrives via freight delivery on a large palette. The lawn vacuum is very securely locked down within the box, with dozens of straps that have to be cut away to get the partially assembled vacuum loose. That said, our testers noted that the vacuum does come mostly put together, so assembly only consists of attaching all of the larger pieces to the main unit.

“It was tricky lifting this beast out of its box, as well as navigating it around with the giant hose continually getting in the way. But again, it was mostly just connecting the large pieces together into one full unit,” says product tester Sheri Kaz.

Another reason we’re so impressed by this machine is that its loaded with extra features, including an onboard chipper, steel impeller, easy bagging system and optional hose kit. You can even adjust the height to best suit wet or dry conditions.

we tried it

DR Leaf and Lawn Vacuum

This self-propelled, gas-powered machine has a serrated all-steel impeller and on-board chipper to handle large fall cleanups.

DR Leaf and Lawn Vacuum Features

EZ Bagger Leaf Collection System

Rather than having to attach, empty and re-attach a reusable bag every time you fire this bad boy up, the DR Leaf and Lawn vacuum uses standard leaf bags that can be deposited at the curb or in the compost pile. The platform holds the bag, and the support ring provides a crimp bar for quick installation. Plus, the latch keeps it secure. Just be sure to read the instruction manual carefully.

“At first, we were confused about how to secure the bag in place, then Annamarie figured out that you secure the bag from underneath,” says product tester Dylan Fischer.

This leaf vacuum also includes a leaf bag caddie that is attached to the unit. It holds up to 10 standard leaf bags, so you have empties on hand as you make your way around the yard. You can purchase another caddie separately for even more storage. You can also buy reusable leaf collection bags if you prefer.

Serrated Steel Impeller

This tough blade mulches everything that crosses its path. In fact, the brand is so confident in this impeller’s durability that it’s backed by a lifetime warranty.

On-Board Chipper

 Dr Leaf And Lawn Vacuum

An on-board chipper allows you to add branches up to 1.5 inches in diameter for even more thorough cleanups.

Optional Hose Kit

Purchase an optional hose kit to clean hard-to-reach spots up to seven feet away from the machine, such as window wells, beneath shrubs or along the foundation.

How We Tested It

Product testers Sheri Kaz and Dylan Fischer led the charge and set out to see what the DR Leaf and Lawn Vacuum was really made of. After unpacking and assembling the machine, they added the oil and gas and started it up. Initially, both testers found it difficult to start.

“Dylan couldn’t figure out how to properly work the choke valve, so we had to recruit some city workers,” explains Kaz. “Of course, the guy (shout out to Greenfield City Worker, Bruce!) was able to start it immediately without asking a single question.”

According to our testers, the choke lever on this machine is a piece of metal that the instructions say must be pushed inward. In reality, it needs to be pulled more to the side when starting the engine, then slowly released as the engine revs up.

Once the unit was up and running, we scattered roughly 30 gallons of leaves across two 10-foot by 4-foot rectangles of grass. One rectangle had dry leaves, and the other had damp leaves that had been misted by a hose. Our testers recorded the time it took the DR Leaf and Lawn Vacuum to suck up each set of leaves on the highest setting.

For both the wet and dry leaf tests, the DR Leaf and Lawn Vacuum gave an impressive performance, sucking up almost everything in its path in just one pass. They also appreciated how the chipper automatically turns on without you having to do anything, so it’s always ready to be fed sticks.

Fischer notes that this leaf vacuum isn’t too bad when it comes to maneuverability and feels very similar to a push lawnmower.

What wasn’t ideal, however, was the amount of dust that this unit produced.

“This machine spit out a lot of dust behind it, and Dylan was in the direct line of fire,” says Kaz. “He stopped and had to put on safety eyewear.” The team attributes this to the tubing, which spits debris out toward the top of the vacuum instead of the bottom.

Once everything had been sucked up, our testers noted that the contents of the leaf bag had been mulched up very fine and small. They also pointed out that the on-board chipper is a great feature to have.

Pros

  • Handles huge piles of wet and dry leaves
  • On-board chipper works well on branches
  • Direct bagging
  • Steel impeller with a lifetime warranty
  • Cleans large areas quickly
  • You can walk away from this machine and leave it running

Cons

  • Creates a lot of dust
  • Too bulky and stiff to make quick turns

FAQ

How does DR Lawn vacuum work?

During testing, our product testing team found that the DR Leaf and Lawn Vacuum is quite intuitive. All you have to do is start it up and push it around your yard until all of the leaves and other small debris are gone. Any branches you pick up can be put directly into the on-board chipper. When you’re finished with your cleanup, simply remove the bag and put on a new one for next time.

How long will my DR leaf vacuum run?

Dr Leaf And Lawn Vacuum

The DR Lawn and Leaf Vacuum does not run on a battery. It has a 1.0-liter fuel capacity and a 0.5-liter oil capacity and can hold up to 50 pounds of debris. You can expect this machine to run until it runs out of fuel or has reached capacity.

What Other Reviewers Had to Say

Verified Tractor Supply Co. user SayCheese writes, “The DR Leaf Vacuum is great! It came on a pallet and needed a small amount of assembly. Only 1/2-inch wrench is required. I am glad I took the advice from others and spent the extra money on the self-propelled. This may sound crazy but, I found operating it to be relaxing. Raking that would take 5-6 hrs. It only took 1-1 1/2 hrs with this machine.”

Kenneth from Little Elm, Texas, is impressed by the performance and convenience of this leaf vacuum and calls it an incredible machine.

“This thing is powerful and vacuums like a champ,” they write on the DR Power website. “However, the real beauty of this machine is its ability to bag in paper bags. Anybody can blow them into a pile, but the pickup is a pain. This eliminates the drudgery of the work and is actually fun. And your neighbors will crowd around wondering what it is!”

And Michael, a 76-year-old from Maryland, calls the DR Leaf and Lawn Vacuum a fantastic labor-saving machine.

“My usual method has been to blow leaves into a pile, rake onto a tarp, drag tarp to mulch area, run my lawn mower repeatedly over the piles and rake the flakes onto the mulch pile: maybe 6 hours of work 4 or 5 times a season,” they write. “This machine saves me maybe 4 hours each time and lots of sweat. This XTSP has proven this season to be a life-saver. I’m ecstatic, and mention it to everyone!”

DR Leaf and Lawn Vacuum vs. Billy Goat Leaf Vacuum

Our experts on the product testing team tested two walk-behind leaf vacuums for comparison sake: the DR Leaf and Lawn Vacuum and the Billy Goat Lawn & Litter Vacuum. While both units claim to be self-propelled, our team preferred the Billy Goat lawn vacuum’s maneuverability and ability to take quick turns over the stiffer drive of the DR Leaf and Lawn Vacuum. Additionally, our testers also liked the automated choke lever on the Billy Goat better than the choke lever on the DR.

In terms of performance, the DR Leaf and Lawn Vacuum cleaned up a large, 10-by-4 area more efficiently than the Billy Goat. The DR Leaf and Lawn Vacuum sucked up almost everything in under a minute with just one pass. The Billy Goat, on the other hand, took about a minute and a half and two passes to clear the same amount of leaves in the same area.

The other major difference between the two units is the bag. The Billy Goat Leaf Vacuum comes with a reusable, zipperless bag that is easy to attach and remove. However, it quickly becomes stained and unsightly. The DR Leaf and Lawn Vacuum uses standard paper leaf bags that can be closed and put down at the curb or dumped into a compost pile. And if you happen to prefer a reusable bag, you can purchase one separately for the DR for $85.

Final Verdict

“Huge fan of the chipper on this one! Anyone who has to spend a lot of time raking up branches on their lawn will undoubtedly find themselves using this feature a lot,” raves Fischer.

And that’s not the only thing we love about this machine. We’re fans of the reusable bags that are easy to dispose of, the on-board chipper and the steel impeller that mulches leaves and debris as it sucks them up. One thing is for sure: the DR Leaf and Lawn Vacuum is sure to have your yard clean in no time.

Where to Buy the DR Leaf and Lawn Vacuum

The DR Leaf and Lawn Vacuum is available for around $1,500 at Tractor Supply Co.,Acme Tools, or Blain’s Farm and Fleet. It includes a few paper leaf bags to get you started.

We tested it to find out.

]]>
To paraphrase an old saying, a Jack of all trades is usually a master of none. We wanted to see if that was the case with the Worx Leaf Vacuum, a versatile yard cleaning tool that acts as a leaf blower, vacuum and mulcher, so we had two longtime gardeners and lawn care experts test it in their yard.

There are other three-in-one leaf vacuums, but Worx is one of the most talked about options among lawn enthusiasts due to its efficiency and various attachments, including one that places mulched leaves directly in your garbage can.

Read on to see what our testers had to say about the Worx Leaf Vacuum, whether it’s worth the price and how it stacks up to the competition.

What is the Worx Leaf Vacuum?

The Worx Leaf Vacuum is an electric three-in-one leaf blower, vacuum and mulcher that switches modes with the turn of a knob. On the blower setting, you get a two-speed operation with a wide-mouth tube. It has a maximum air capacity of 620 cubic feet per minute (CFM).

For those who don’t know, CFM measures the amount of air pushed out by a blower. First-time leaf blower or vacuum buyers may instinctively look for how fast a machine can blow (the Worx Leaf Vacuum reaches 70 miles per hour), but you also want to look for a high CFM if you have a larger yard.

The vacuum setting sucks up the leaves that are then mulched by a metal impeller at an 18:1 ratio (18 bags of leaves can fit into one). The leaves can be vacuumed into a bag worn over your shoulder or directly into a garbage can using the LeafPro collection system.

“As a gardener who likes to compost, the option to collect leaves directly into a garbage can is a nice feature,” says product tester Sheri Kaz, who’s been gardening since she was a child.

This is a corded model, so it might not be the best fit for people with larger yards. Our testers say the cord length was only 7 inches, and the vacuum has a tube length of 19.5 inches, so you’ll need an extension cord to reach every corner of your yard.

Worx 3-in-1 Electric Leaf Blower/Mulcher/Yard Vacuum

Worx Leaf Vacuum Features

Three-in-One Functionality

Three-in-one leaf cleaning tools are becoming more popular, and it’s easy to see why. Nobody wants to drop money on several products, and it’s annoying to have to go in and out of the garage every 10 minutes to get a new machine. The Worx Leaf Vacuum has a knob that switches it from a leaf blower to a vacuum with mulching capabilities.

Kaz says the push-and-turn knob is easy, so we rated it a 5 out of 5 when it came to the ease of alternating between functions.

Leaf Blower

Worx Leaf Vacuum

Let’s examine the Worx Leaf Vacuum as a blower. It has a maximum CFM of 620 and a 70-mile-per-hour air speed with a wide-mouth tube. This combination makes it great for people who have a large amount of leaves and aren’t in a rush. The lower speed, however, means it might not pick up wet leaves or heavy debris as well as more powerful blowers.

Kaz says the 9-pound machine feels lightweight in her hand, though she notes that it only has one handle, so it’s harder to distribute the weight evenly. This causes the user to tire quicker than with blowers that have a second grip.

Our testers also noted the cord was cumbersome, though the obvious benefit is you don’t have to wait for it to charge like other electric options. “The cord unplugged easily, so the machine kept getting disconnected from the extension cord and powering down,” Kaz adds.

There are two speeds to pick from, depending on where you are in your cleanup. The first setting is for more precise blowing, whereas the second speed is for blowing leaves “everywhere,” Kaz says. She says it’s easy to switch speeds while continuing to blow.

For those looking for a dedicated leaf blower, check out our Ego Leaf Blower review.

Leaf Vacuum With Mulching Capabilities

Worx Leaf Vacuum

Our testers noted the Worx Leaf Vacuum had no trouble sucking up the leaves or mulching them. “It mulches leaves very finely,” Kaz says. She notes there were several times you could see dust or dirt coming out of the bag, though this happened with every electric leaf vacuum we tested.

Worx claims their leaf vacuum has an 18:1 mulch ratio, which means it turns 18 bags of leaves into one.

There were some difficulties with getting the mulched leaves into either disposal system.

“Many of the small pieces collect on and get stuck in the wrinkles of the LeafPro bag versus making it to the trash bin,” Kaz says. When using the shoulder strap bag, she says there were times she had to hand-feed clumps into the tube because they were getting stuck.

Our testers spent about five minutes and 50 seconds vacuuming and mulching dry leaves. Vacuuming and mulching a similar amount of wet leaves took just one minute and five seconds, and a lot less dust was created.

Bag/Trash Can Disposal

Worx Leaf Vacuum

The Worx Leaf Vacuum comes with ashoulder-strap bag similar to theHusqvarna Backpack Blower. You can alsoadd the LeafPro attachment to your order so the mulch goes straight into a garbage can. The best part of the latter is that it’s a universal attachment, so it should work with other companies’ vacuums.

Kaz says the shoulder strap bag offers a bit more maneuverability and helps with stability.

Check out our picks for the best backpack leaf blowers.

The LeafPro attachment is a great feature, though it requires you to drag your garbage can around the yard or get all the leaves to one central location.

Quiet

Worx Leaf Vacuum

The Worx Leaf Vacuum is much quieter than gas models and is quieter than other electric models. Our testers measured the decibel rating, the unit of measurement used for sound, at 96.8 for the blower and 90.5 for the vacuum (both on their highest setting).

Noise levels of around 100 decibels are considered dangerous and prolonged exposure to those noises could result in hearing loss, so we recommend wearing ear plugs or other hearing protection if you plan on using it for long.

How We Tested It

Worx Leaf Vacuum

Our expert product testers analyzed the Worx alongside some of the best-selling leaf vacuums. Before we tried them, we researched standalone vacuums and three-in-one options based on industry rankings, customer reviews, brand reputation and price.

We then used the Worx Leaf Vacuum and the other models to clean up more than 500 gallons of leaves, dry and wet, for 45 hours to collect hundreds of data points on their performance.

Pros

  • Unlimited runtime
  • 18:1 mulch ratio
  • Easy to switch between blower and vacuum
  • LeafPro attachment for direct deposit into a trash bin
  • Lightweight
  • Versatile

Cons

  • Only one handle

  • Cord can be annoying to deal with

FAQ

Fhma24 Worx Leaf Vacuum Annamarie Higley 04 Stedit

Which Worx leaf vacuum is best?

In our opinion, the Worx Trivac Three-in-One Electric Leaf Blower/Vacuum/Mulcher is the best Worx leaf vacuum because it combines three machines into one. Our expert product testers said it performed well when sucking and mulching leaves, though it only has one handle, so it’s not the most stable when being used as a blower.

What is the difference between Worx 512 and 509?

The Worx 512 has a maximum cubic feet per minute (CFM) output of 620, compared to the Worx 509’s 350 CFM. This means the 512 can move more leaves per minute, though the 509 has a higher air speed at 210 MPH compared to the 509’s 75 MPH, so it’s better for heavier debris or wet leaves.

Finally, the 509 has an 18:1 mulching ratio, and the 512 has a 16:1.

What Other Reviewers/Experts Had to Say

As of this writing, the Worx Trivac Three-in-One Electric Leaf Blower/Vacuum/Mulcher has an average rating of 4.2 on Amazon, with nearly 4,700 of the 7,500 ratings being five stars.

“Now, I gotta tell ya, this Worx leaf blower is a Southern yard’s best friend,” writes five-star Amazon reviewer Cory. “It’s powerful like a thunderstorm, but easy to handle like a gentle breeze. It ain’t too heavy either, so you won’t be strainin’ yourself tryin’ to tame them leaves.”

Although there aren’t many negative reviews, some customers claim it has a short lifespan or fails to deliver on its promises. “It lacks sufficient power as a leaf blower and struggles to mulch effectively,” writes one-star Amazon reviewer Suzanne B. “The vacuum function is weak and often clogs. The build feels cheap, and it’s not as versatile or efficient as advertised.”

Worx Leaf Vacuum vs DR Leaf Vacuum

The DR Leaf Vacuum has leaf vacuuming and mulching capabilities like the Worx Leaf Vacuum, but instead of also having a blower, it serves as a wood chipper that can break down branches up to 1.5 inches in diameter.

“Anyone who has to spend a lot of time raking up branches on their lawn will undoubtedly find themselves using this feature a lot,” Fischer says of the chipping capabilities of the DR Leaf Vacuum.

So obviously, the DR is a better choice for those who have more branches in their yard than the average person. Let’s compare the two just as vacuums/mulchers. The DR is the easy choice for people with larger yards, as you can fit up to 50 pounds of leaves in one bag. The Worx fits up to eight gallons of mulched leaves when using the bag, and the LeafPro attachment is only limited by the size of your garbage can, though the cord limits how far you can go unless you have a long extension cord.

The DR is also much quicker. Our testers cleared wet and dry leaves in about a minute. The Worx took more than five minutes with dry leaves and just over a minute with wet leaves.

The Worx wins on price, at under $200. The DR Leaf Vacuum costs around $2,500. Our testers also noted the DR vacuum created a lot more dust and recommended wearing eye protection when using it. The Worx vacuum created some dust, but not enough to be a nuisance.

Final Verdict

The Worx Leaf Vacuum is a cost-friendly and versatile tool that can help speed up your leaf-cleaning duties. While it’s not perfect, especially when it comes to stability, it offers a lot of bang for your buck.

We recommend it for people with small or mid-sized yards who want to use one machine for leaf cleaning. Be aware that it only has one handle, so you’ll need a strong grip to distribute the weight evenly. Also, our testers said it’s not uncommon for leaves to get clogged in the tube.

The cord provides an unlimited runtime, though you’ll need an extension cord if you want to walk around with it.

There’s no denying that fall foliage is a sight to behold–at least while it’s still on the trees. But when all those leaves start to blanket your lawn and gardens, that’s another story. One of the fastest ways to combat a yard full of leaves is by investing in a good leaf blower orlawn vacuum. But if you don’t have the room or the budget for multiple tools, then you’ll want to pick up a leaf blower and vacuum combo.

One of our favorite leaf blowers that also functions as a leaf vacuum is the Craftsman backpack leaf blower. It’s powerful, easy to use and budget-friendly. In order to see how well this Craftsman backpack blower stands up to a mountain of leaves, we sent it to our testing lab for close inspection. Heres everything you need to know about this model before you add it to your arsenal of lawn equipment.

What is the Craftsman Backpack Leaf Blower?

The Craftsman backpack leaf blower is an electric leaf blower. It has a 12-inch cord and is a true backpack-style lawn tool with two straps, making it less cumbersome than a sling bag. This leaf blower boasts a powerful 12-amp motor with a velocity and air volume of up to 450 cubic feet per minute (CFM). When it comes to speed, this tool can shoot air out at 260 miles per hour (MPH).

At under 12 pounds, this Craftsman backpack blower is lightweight and incredibly easy to use and maneuver, thanks to its user-friendly handles. But that’s not the only reason we love it so much. This Craftsman blower also functions as a leaf vacuum.

“Vacuums are effective when cleaning up smaller spaces and tight areas. For example, cleaning leaves in bushes,” explains Francisco Fuenmayor, a handyman and home improvement expert at LocalProBook. “A leaf blower won’t be able to blow the leaves out of there, while blowers are better for quickly moving large amounts of debris across bigger spaces.”

No tools are required to switch this from blower to vacuum mode. In vacuum mode, it sucks up and mulches up to 55 liters of leaves into the backpack. Once the bag is full, simply open it up and dump all of the mulched debris out. Yard work has never been so easy! Keep reading for a full breakdown of the Craftsman backpack blower’s features and to find out why it’s one of the best backpack leaf blowers we’ve tested.

Craftsman Backpack Leaf Blower

The Craftsman backpack leaf blower also functions as a leaf vacuum for quick and easy cleanup.

Craftsman Backpack Leaf Blower Features

Versatility

As mentioned above, the Craftsman backpack blower functions as both a leaf blower and a leaf vacuum. In order to switch between functions, all you have to do is switch the tubes and twist open the fan cover. The fan cover is attached to the machine so you don’t lose it, and no tools are required.

Engine Power and Blowing Force

The Craftsman backpack blower is pretty powerful given its size and price point. Its 12-amp motor allows it to clear tough debris like wet leaves and pebbles. It moves air at 450 cubic feet per minute (CFM). “A strong blower with good CFM is great for cleaning hard-to-reach corners and gathering debris from garden beds into neat piles on the lawn,” explains Fuenmayor. Additionally, the Craftsman backpack blower blows air at up to 260 MPH. A higher MPH increases the distance you are able to clear.

Holding Crafstman Backpack

Mulching Capabilities

In vacuum mode, the Craftsman backpack blower’s plastic impeller shreds debris into mulch and deposits it into the backpack. According to the manufacturer, this machine shreds leaves and reduces their volume by a ratio of 12:01. During testing, our testers noted that this blower mulched the leaves very finely.

Warranty

The Craftsman backpack blower is covered by a three-year limited warranty. This means that for three years following the date of purchase or date of delivery of the product (whichever date is later), this machine is warrantied against defects in material or workmanship. This warranty is extended only to the original end-user purchaser of the product. Read more about Craftsman’s warranty policy here.

How We Tested It

The product testing team, led by associate product testers Sheri Kaz and Dylan Fischer, took this Craftsman backpack blower into our testing lab to see what it’s really made of. They looked at how easy it was to assemble and how well it performed as both a leaf blower and a leaf vacuum.

Using Craftsman Backpack 2

Assembly

Our testers ran into some initial hiccups during the assembly process, noting that the plastic pieces didn’t click into place as satisfyingly as they would have liked. However, they describe the process itself as pretty straightforward. Once it was assembled and ready to go, our testers especially liked the ergonomic handles which allowed them to get a good grip before they started blowing.

Leaf Blowing

To test the Craftsman’s performance as a leaf blower, our team scattered dry leaves around the yard, then blew them into a designated 4-by-10-foot area before vacuuming, evaluating the blower’s directional control, ease of use and noise level. Our testers were really impressed by the power behind this blower. However, it was a bit too powerful at times. “It would be nice if there were multiple speed levels, because the one will blow your pile all around as you get closer to it,” says Kaz. Additionally, this leaf blower registered 106.5 decibels. In other words, it’s loud! Ear and eye protection are strongly recommended.

Vacuuming

After they finished blowing the leaves, our testers set out to test the vacuum function on the Craftsman backpack blower. To convert the machine from a leaf blower to a leaf vacuum, Kaz and Fisher had to swap the blower tube for the vacuum tube and twist open the fan cover, which is attached to the machine so you don’t lose it. Though easy in theory, Kaz and Fischer struggled a bit here, noting that the tubes don’t really click into place. But after double-checking the user manual, they were back in business.

Emptying Craftsman Backpack 2

For this test, our testers spread roughly 30 gallons of leaves across two rectangles of grass. They covered one rectangle in dry leaves and the other had damp leaves, which had been misted with a hose. Our testers timed how long it took to suck up each rectangle’s leaves while evaluating the ergonomics, maneuverability, noise level and more.

According to Kaz and Fischer’s report, it took just under three minutes to suck up all of the dry leaves and just over one minute to suck up all of the wet leaves. Upon emptying the bag, they noted that the leaves had been very finely mulched.

Comfort

As for comfort, Fischer points out that the unit itself gets pretty heavy to use for an extended length of time. Luckily, the overall backpack design helped. “The backpack is nice on this one because it’s a full backpack that goes over both shoulders,” he says. “It provides a lot of relief from the weight.”

Overall, our product testing team highly recommends the Craftsman backpack blower. It was a top performer in the lab and is both easy and comfortable to use. “The two-strapped backpack-style bag works amazingly well and should be the standard for all these handheld vacuums. It’s a great way to equally distribute weight and goes a long way to mitigate fatigue,” raves Fischer.

And for less than $100, you simply can’t go wrong.

Using Craftsman Backpack

Pros:

  • Functions as a leaf blower and a leaf vacuum
  • Two-strapped backpack provides relief from the weight of the unit
  • Powerful performance
  • Finely mulches leaves and debris it vacuums
  • Under $100
  • Ergonomic handles

Cons:

  • Not cordless
  • Plastic pieces don’t readily click into place

Why You Should Trust Us

Our editors and testers on the product testing team have years of experience in the commerce space. We’ve tested dozens of leaf blowers and leaf vacuums, including the Husqvarna Backpack Blower, Stihl BR 600 Backpack Blower and the Ego Leaf Blower. And we don’t plan on stopping there! Currently, we are testing more leaf blowers and leaf vacuums to ensure we help you make informed decisions based on real-life testing before you buy.

To further discuss the benefits and uses of leaf blowers and vacuums, we also enlisted the expertise of Francisco Fuenmayor, a handyman and home improvement expert at LocalProBook.

FAQ

What kind of gas does a Craftsman backpack leaf blower take?

This Craftsman backpack blower is electric and does not take gas.

Why won’t my Craftsman backpack blower start?

First, make sure your Craftsman backpack blower is plugged in. The cord on this model is only 12 inches long, so an extension cord may be required.

If that doesn’t work, check the fan cover. “Initially, you have to turn the cover to lock it into place in order for the machine to turn on,” explains Fischer. “We didn’t realized this, so the machine wouldn’t start after several tries. Finally, after about five attempts and referring to the user manual, it seemed that whatever was hanging it up resolved itself and we were able to click the cover into place.”

What kind of oil goes in a Craftsman?

This Craftsman backpack blower does not require oil.

What Other Reviewers and Experts Had to Say

Five-star reviewer Robert T Kennedy appreciates how well this unit cleans his yard without sucking up expensive decorative stones. “I liked the multiple options for the leaf blower,” he writes. “One piece of equipment keeps my lawn, garden, walkways and driveway clean with its powerful motor. Definitely worth the reasonable price.”

Micray, another five-star reviewer, calls the Craftsman backpack blower a back-saver. “This has been such a lifesaver trying to clean up. My backyard had hundreds of those little bitty gumballs, and this has made picking them up so much easier,” they write.

After running into some of the same issues as our product testing team in regards to getting the pieces into place, verified user Girly Gamer is happy to have figured it out. “It ended up working beautifully on the vacuum part which is all I wanted. Great power, bag is comfortable and holds A LOT! It is fairly heavy, but with the two handles, it’s not too bad,” they write. “Saved me big time from raking and bending over to pick up piles of pine needles which had been building up for a year! Even mulched pine cones and twigs fine…”

Product Comparison

Our product testing team tested a total of six blower vacuum combos including the Craftsman backpack blower. They labeled this unit the best overall for its performance, two-strap backpack style and good value. We also tested the Toro Ultra Blower Vac, another corded model which functions as a blower and a vacuum. The Craftsman and the Toro are both similarly sized and priced, there was a significant difference in performance.

The Craftsman backpack blower has a velocity and air volume of up to 450 cubic feet per minute (CFM) and expels air at 260 miles per hour (MPH). The Toro, on the other hand, has a velocity and air volume of 340 CFM in blow mode and 405 CFM in vac mode. And though the Toro boasts the same 260 MPH as the Craftsman, our testers found the Toro’s blowing performance to be much weaker than the Craftsman backpack blower.

Additionally, the Craftsman backpack blower has a two-strapped backpack-style bag which makes it easy to tote around the yard. The Toro has one strap which you can sling over your shoulder. Though not uncomfortable, it’s not as convenient as the Craftsman backpack blower.

Final Verdict

If you’re looking for an inexpensive way to keep your yard neat and tidy, you can’t go wrong with the Craftsman backpack blower. This versatile blower is comfortable, easy to use and powerful enough to get the job done. In short, you can expect your lawn to look like a million bucks all autumn long thanks to this handy backpack blower.

Why Every DIYer Needs a Track Saw https://www.familyhandyman.com/article/track-saw-benefits/ Tue, 03 Sep 2024 19:28:47 +0000 Track saws make long, precise cuts faster and better than table saws and circular saws. They are light and portable, don't need clamps and set up quickly and accurately.

The post Why Every DIYer Needs a Track Saw appeared first on Family Handyman.

]]>
When I first laid eyes on a track saw, I thought, I have a table saw. I have a straightedge to guide my circular saw. Why would I spend $500 (or more) on one of these contraptions? I was sure it was another tool gimmick for suckers. Then I talked to track saw owners, from cabinetmakers and flooring installers to trim carpenters and remodelers. Every single one of them told me that buying a track saw was a smart move. Now I own one, too.

A track saw is similar to your framing sawthe way a Porsche is similar to a dump truck. It’s engineered to be smooth and precise rather than rugged, and you’ll feel the difference the first time you pull the trigger.

You push, the blade plunges

You Push The Blade Plunges

Unlike your circular saw, this has no clumsy blade guard to fight. On the DeWalt and Festool, a riving knife follows the blade, reducing kickback and blade-pinching

Precision guidance system

Precision Guidance System

Unlike a straightedge, the rail won’t let the saw veer off course. Adjustment knobs fine-tune the fit between the saw’s shoe and the track, so there’s zero slop.

Accurate adjustments

Accurate Adjustments

All three models feature easy-to-read scales, solid depth stops, and front and rear bevel locks. Forget the ballpark settings on your circular saw; with a track saw, what you set is what you get.

No-slip track

No Slip Track

Those sticky rubber strips on the bottom of the track don’t slip; there’s no need to waste time clamping down the track in most situationseven when trimming doors. Cutting clampless is scary initially, but you’ll learn to trust the sticky strips. For those rare times when you need them, get clamps that lock into the track.

Dust collection that really works

The shroud on a track saw doesn’t just enclose the blade; it also creates an effective dust trap. Add a vacuum hose and you can do things you wouldn’t dream of with any other saw.

Video: How to Cut Straight With a Circular Saw

Exact track alignment

Exact Track Alignment

Just align the track with your marks and you’re ready to cut. The plastic edge shows you precisely where the blade will cut. No test cuts, no double checking, no guesswork. Again and again, track saw owners told me, I’ve never screwed up a cut with this saw.

Nice for tight spaces

A track saw can make big cuts in a small space. If you had to, you could slice up a full sheet of plywood in an 8 x 10 foot room. Unlike with a table saw, there’s no need for infeed or outfeed space. A track saw is also a space saver in your truck or van.

Easy to move

A track saw does most of what a table saw does, but moving between job sites is much easier because it fits under your arm. Safer, too: Carrying a track saw, you’re less likely to bang up door casings or wreck your back. Plus, you can call Mom while you load up your truck.

Cut long miters

Cut Long Miters

With a miter saw, a table saw or even a panel saw, the length and angle of the cut are limited. Not so with a track saw. You’ll get an accurate miter no matter how long or how steep the angle.

There is one downside, however. Unlike those other saws, a track saw doesn’t have a built-in miter gauge, so setting up miter cuts can be slow. If you do lots of long miters, you might want to spend $50 to $100 on a miter gauge that locks onto the track.

Saw cut comparison

Saw Cut Comparison

I made test cuts with track saws and a top-of-the-line cabinet saw. Whether the material was solid wood, plywood or MDF, the track saw cuts were just as smooth as the table saw cuts.

To test for tear-out, I added a circular saw to the contest and cut melamine. The track saws did the best, producing almost perfect cuts, with only a few tiny chips on the top of the waste piece. The table saw left tiny chips on the face-down side. The circular saw did just what you’d expect.

A finished cut the first time

A Finished Cut The First Time

To avoid wrestling heavy sheets across a table saw, many of us perform a two-act play: We rough-cut with a circular saw, then make finish cuts on a table saw. With a track saw, you can skip the second act. The first cuts will be your final cutsevery bit as straight, smooth and accurate as you’ll get on a table saw.

Connect the tracks, cut for miles

Long Cut Potential

The ends of the tracks are dead square, so you can lock them together for super-straight, super-long cuts. (I heard from a gym-floor installer who lays up to 100 ft. of track for a single cut!) The connectors cost about $17 each. One connector is good, but two is better. Most rails fall into one of two general categories: long enough for a 4-ft. cut (about $100) or long enough for an 8-ft. cut (about $200).

FAQ

Is my table saw obsolete?

Nope. If you get a track saw, your table saw may get some long vacations, but it won’t go into retirement. Cutting small parts with a track saw is clumsy, and cutting much deeper than 2 in. is impossible with most models. And when it comes to identical repeat cutsripping wide boards into cabinet stock, for examplea track saw is a slow, sorry substitute for a table saw.

46,000 DeWALT Mowers Recalled for Laceration Risk — See If You’re Affected https://www.familyhandyman.com/article/stanley-black-decker-dewalt-mowers-recall/ Fri, 23 Aug 2024 15:44:36 +0000 https://www.familyhandyman.com/?p=631483 Thousands of DeWALT mowers are being recalled because of a safety hazard. Find out if you're impacted here.

The post 46,000 DeWALT Mowers Recalled for Laceration Risk — See If You’re Affected appeared first on Family Handyman.

]]>
If you’re a homeowner who relies on a DeWALT battery-powered walk-behind mower to keep your lawn looking sharp, you’ll want to pay close attention: Stanley Black & Decker has issued a recall for certain DeWALT mowers due to a potential laceration hazard. This recall could impact anyone using these mowers, so knowing if your model is affected and what steps to take next is essential.

Read on to learn more about the recall, the risks involved, and what you should do if you own one of the recalled mowers.

Which DeWALT Mowers Are Recalled?

Stanley Black & Decker has recalled over 46,000 lawnmowers (and another nearly 10,000 in Canada). According to the US Consumer Product Safety Commission, the recall impacts the following mowers:

  • 2024 DeWALT Battery 21 Push walk-behind mowers
    • Models: DCMWP234U2, DCMWP600X2
  • DeWALT Battery 21″ Self-Propelled walk-behind mowers
    • Models: DCMWSP256U2, DCMWSP650Y2

Why Are These DeWALT Mowers Recalled?

These DeWALT walk-behind mowers are recalled because, if water gets into the handle support while the battery is installed, the impacted mowers may fail to shut off when the bail handle is released. They may also start without a key, presenting a laceration hazard.

There have been ten reports of mowers failing to shut off and one report of a mower starting without a key, which resulted in a minor finger laceration (no medical attention was required). Still, you shouldn’t ignore this DeWALT mower recall.

How Do I Know If My DeWALT Mower Is Recalled?

To identify if your DeWALT mower is part of the recall, follow these steps:

  • Start by checking its colorthese mowers are black, gray, and yellow with “DeWALT” printed in yellow on the front or side.
  • Next, look for the model number on the rear door of the mower.
  • You’ll also need to find the date code, which is laser-printed in yellow on the mower’s left side, just above the rear wheel. The date code will be in this format: “20XX YY-58,” where “20XX” indicates the year, “YY” is the week, and “58” is the factory code.

If your mower’s date code falls between 2023 32-58 and 2024 13-58, it’s part of the recall. Mowers made after March 2024 (date code 2024 14-58 and later) are unaffected.

What Should I Do If I Have a Recalled DeWALT Mower?

If you own a recalled mower, stop using it immediately (especially if it has gotten wet) and contact Stanley Black & Decker to schedule a free repair at an authorized service center near you.

How To Use a Chainsaw Safely https://www.familyhandyman.com/project/how-to-use-a-chainsaw/ Fri, 02 Aug 2024 15:17:57 +0000 https://www.familyhandyman.com/?post_type=project&p=620975 Ensure your safety while learning how to use a chainsaw. Follow our step-by-step instructions for proper chainsaw setup and operation.

The post How To Use a Chainsaw Safely appeared first on Family Handyman.

]]>

Chainsaws are excellent tools for cutting fallen trees and large branches. They are incredibly powerful and can cause severe injuries if used improperly. It is essential to be cautious while using a chainsaw and to follow all safety guidelines to prevent accidents. Remember that most accidents occur during the initial cut and the finish of the cut.

Most newer chainsaws come with safety features built into the chainsaw, which are beneficial but should never be considered a replacement for thorough training in chainsaw operation. Before starting the chainsaw, ensure you have all the necessary safety gear:

  • Safety gloves
  • Steel- or composite-toe boots
  • Hearing protection
  • Full face shield
  • Safety chaps
  • Safety helmet

Electric vs gas chainsaws

With various options available, including gas-powered and electric models, deciding which suits your needs can be overwhelming.

Gas chainsaws are known for their incredible power, making them capable of handling large-scale tasks such as cutting down trees and thick logs. They require regular maintenance, including fuel and oil, air filter cleaning, and spark plug replacements. Compared to electric chainsaws, gas chainsaws tend to be heavier and louder.

Electric chainsaws are lightweight, easy to start and require minimal maintenance. They are eco-friendly since they run on electricity but are typically less powerful than gas chainsaws. Depending on the model, battery-powered chainsaws may have limited runtime and require frequent recharging, or you’ll need to have additional batteries charged and ready to go.

A gas chainsaw would provide enough power if your work mainly involves large-scale tasks. For smaller projects around your home, the cutting capabilities of an electric chainsaw may suffice. If you’re a beginner or have limited physical strength, an electric chainsaw’s lightweight design and ease of use may be more appropriate.

Avoid chainsaw kickback

Always wrap the thumb of your left hand around the front handle while cutting. This encircling grip keeps the saw under control during a kickback. Cutting with the chain on the bottom of the bar is the most common and natural-feeling way to cut. Cutting with the bottom bar will pull the chainsaw towards the trunk. Cutting the underside of a trunk requires you to cut with the top of the bar, which is a little unnerving initially because the saw pushes toward you. But its safe if youre well-braced and follow all other precautions.

You should avoid a spot on the bar called the kickback zone, which is the top half of the bars tip. If the kickback zone comes in contact with something while the chain moves, the saw will kick up and back toward you. Modern chainsaws have a chain brake to stop the chain if a kickback occurs.

How To Use A Chainsaw Safely

I recommend taking the time to stand back and assess the situation. Think about how youll cut each branch and what will happen. Branches facing up will fall, so make sure the fall path is open. Even seasoned pros cant always predict how far the trunk will drop or whether the tree will roll. But you should always imagine the worst-case scenario and be prepared for it.

Preparation and inspection

Before using your chainsaw, ensure you have the proper safety gear and read the operator’s manual because each chainsaw is unique.

Inspect the chain to see if the blades are dull and need to be sharpened or replaced. A dull chain is unsafe and overworks the saw. If you dont know how to sharpen a chainsaw chain, you can purchase a new one from a hardware store or home center.

How To Fix a Stuck Throttle Cable on a Lawn Mower https://www.familyhandyman.com/article/how-to-fix-stuck-throttle-cable/ Wed, 17 Jul 2024 16:49:37 +0000 https://www.familyhandyman.com/?p=624726 Lawnmower throttle cables can get stuck because of rust and grit, making it difficult to control the mower.

The post How To Fix a Stuck Throttle Cable on a Lawn Mower appeared first on Family Handyman.

]]>
A throttle cable on a lawn mower is a mechanical component that connects the throttle lever to the engine’s carburetor, regulating the engine’s speed. It’s crucial for controlling the lawnmower’s power and performance, allowing users to adjust the speed to match mowing conditions. Throttle cables are important because they ensure the engine operates efficiently and safely.

Why Do Throttle Cables Get Stuck

Throttle cables sometimes get stuck due to wear and tear, rust, debris buildup, or improper lubrication. When a throttle cable gets stuck, it can hinder the lawnmower’s performance, making it difficult to properly start or adjust the engine speed. Regular maintenance can prevent these issues. However, if you find yourself with a stuck throttle cable, we have a solution to fix your lawn mower in no time.

Fixing a Stuck Throttle Cable

A person is holding a red funnel and a can, likely adding oil or fuel to the yellow engine of a green lawnmower. The lawnmower is on a gravel surface.

Remove the air cleaner assembly so you can see the choke plate. With the throttle control lever in the choke position, pull on the cable’s outer jacket near the clamp until the choke plate opens. Tighten the clamp with the cable in this position. Reassemble the air cleaner.

If your lawn mower’s throttle cable is hard to move or stuck, here’s a fix: Disconnect both ends of the cable from the mower. To get the cable out, you’ll probably have to remove a bolt and disassemble the lever assembly near the handle. Take a photo to help you put it back together when you’re done.

Close-up of a person's hand using a screwdriver to adjust a cable clamp near the choke plate of a small engine. The engine has a yellow cover, and the green base is visible in the foreground. Labels identify the cable clamp and the choke plate.

At the engine end, loosen the clamp that holds the cable to the engine and unhook the cable from the carburetor. Pour penetrating oil into the cable. Grab the inner cable with pliers and work it up and down to loosen it. When the cable moves freely, and all the penetrating oil has drained out, squirt silicone lubricant into the funnel to keep the cable sliding freely. Reinstall the cable.

Amazon Prime Day is here! For two days only, score deep discounts during one of the biggest sales of the year.See our editors picks.

Many of us love gardening and yard grooming, but few would say they love pulling weeds. Weed management is a nearly constant, labor-intensive activity that typically requires bending, stooping and kneeling to reach the weeds. The end result is usually a sore back, sore knees or both.

As human innovators, we will always find ways to make difficult tasks easier. Knee pads and weeding chairs help. Specialized digging tools are often handheld and aid in getting underneath roots. Stand-up weeders take things to the next level by allowing you to perform weeding from the standing position.

I tried out the Fiskars Deluxe Stand-Up Weeder and put it through a series of tests to access its capabilities. Is it really a good option for sore backs (and pesky weeds) everywhere? Let’s dive in.

What isthe Fiskars Deluxe Stand-Up Weeder?

What Isthe Fiskars Deluxe Stand Up Weeder

The Fiskars Deluxe Stand-Up Weeder merges dreams with reality. It enables root digging and weed pulling from an upright position using a unique system of claws and leverage. This stand-up weeder might change how you feel aboutthe onerous task of weeding.

Fiskars Deluxe Stand-Up WeederProduct Features

Fiskars Deluxe Stand Up WeederProduct Features

The Fiskars stand-up weeder uses four claws to stab weeds and has a 39-inch ergonomic handle shaped like a walking cane. The claws are serrated, and theres a weed ejection mechanism built into the handle. Its best suited for getting at weeds such as thistles and dandelions since those weeds have a clearly identifiable root location.

While the claws are steel, the rest of the weeder is made of sturdy plastic, which keeps it lightweight, around 2.5 pounds, and easy to work with for extended periods of time. The tool has an extra-long foot presser that allows for use with work boots or large feet. Weed releasing is performed by sliding the handle toward the base and returning.

HowWe TestedIt

Howwe Testedit

First, I looked at the packaging and assembly. This tool arrived in a single box and required no assembly. The instructions are printed on the tool,so there was no need to read directions. So, I headed to the yard to get weeding.

I located clumps of crabgrass since it was easy to identify where the roots originated. I centered the four claws over the weed, pressed down on the extremely handy large foot lever and the serrated claws easily sank into the soil. Using the cane-shaped handle, I tilted the tool back against the lever and heard one of the most satisfying sounds one could hearthe sound of roots being pulled completely free. I was so satisfied with my feat that I examined the root system up close before easily sliding the handle to release the weed.

I carried on with the crabgrass patch and was able to clear about two square feet in a couple of minutes. Then, I headed into the yard to ensure the claws could dig through the turf. Again, the claws went right through the tough ground with very little pressure being applied to the foot lever and the weed was easily ejected, thanks to the extractor enclosing all four claws.

After weeding, I checked the claws for damage, and there was none. In fact, the claws’ design indicates that they will stay sharp and capable for a very long time. I washed the dirt off, and the tool still looked brand new.

Pros

  • Non-corrosive components
  • No bending
  • Superior weed release
  • Dandelion destroyer
  • Lightweight

Cons

  • Only works on large-rooted weeds
  • Leaves a divot in the ground
  • Digs only a few inches

FAQ

Fiskars Deluxe Stand Up Weeder

How to use Fiskars stand-up weeder?

  1. Aim the tool at the root by peering through the foot platform.
  2. Press down on the foot platform to dig the claws into the soil around the weed.
  3. Lean the tool toward the foot platform to use the ground as leverage and the weed is extracted.
  4. Slide the ejection mechanism located on the handle to remove the weed from the prongs.
  5. Repeat the steps on the next weed.

Does a stand-up weeder work?

Stand-up weeders do work and can be a great asset to your gardening tool collection. However, they are not going to solve all of your weeding needs. Most stand-up weeders that use prongs excel at pulling thick-rooted plants like dandelions and thistle. There are other types of stand-up weeders that shine at digging or hoeing. Few stand-up weeders can do it all, and despite the benefits of stand-up weeders, youre still going to have to hand-pull some weeds.

How does a stand-up weed puller work?

It depends on the weeder, but most stand-up weeders have four components. The first component is a method for penetrating the soil around the weedclaws, blades, or prongs. The second component is a foot lever for pressing the tool into the soil. The third component is a method for grabbing the weed and pulling itclaws close in on the weed usually by tilting the tool so the lever gets leverage from the ground. The final component is the weed release mechanismusually by the claws opening or a mechanical pushing of the weed.

Are there replaceable parts on the Fiskars stand-up weeder?

The Fiskars Deluxe Stand-Up Weeder does not have replaceable parts. However, it is designed to withstand regular usage and should the need arise, Fiskars offers a lifetime warranty.

What Other Reviewers/Experts Had to Say

A five-star reviewer on Amazon says, Simple to use, worked better than I expected. (Everything is made of flimsy plastic these days) I watered first, and after an hour went outside to try it. I did the entire yard in less than a fourth of the time it took to hand pick weeds.

Very pleased with this product which came ready to roll. It saves countless bending over and day-after-weeding-back-pain-time. It works nicely on most individual weeds and dandelions, pulling the whole root out. Release works well. Perfect for someone with a few beds,” says a verified purchaser on Amazon.

When it comes to stand-up weeders, there are lots of comparisons I can draw. The Fiskars weed ejection mechanism really stood out compared to other weeders. The Fiskars tool encloses each claw,as opposed to simply pressing from the center of the claws. I found center pressers often left the weed still attached to the tool and required hand removal.

Another noticeable aspect of the Fiskars weeder is its weight. Its plastic components make it lighter than tools that use all steel construction, and the plastic will not rust.

Of note among stand-up weeders that use a mechanical action (as opposed to gravity) to release the weed is the Fiskars handle-mounted release. I found that pressing a plunger located on the top of some stand-up weeders could be challenging. Sliding the release mechanism on the handle of the Fiskars was a comfortable and natural motion.

Where to Buy the Fiskars Deluxe Stand-Up Weeder

The Fiskars Deluxe Stand-Up Weeder is available for under $60. You can find a deal on Amazon or pick one up at The Home Depot, Walmartor Ace Hardware.

If you’re a weird leaf blower fanatic like I am, chances are super high that you have heard of the Ego 765 CFM leaf blower. This blower has received rave reviews from everyone under the sun who has had the privilege of laying hands on it. And I am one of those people. I first tested this blower in 2022, and it has not left my side since. This Ego leaf blower is the Taylor Swift of leaf blowers right nowa popular star everyone wants to see in person.

As a leaf blower lover who has always used gas leaf blowers, I was skeptical of a battery-powered blower. I needed raw power that could only be provided by gasolineor so I thought.

What is the Ego Leaf Blower?

Ego leaf blowers are extremely popular for a few reasons. For starters, they are some of the most powerful leaf blowers on the planet. The Ego leaf blower series starts in the 500 CFMs and goes all the way up to 765 CFMs for residential blowers.

As a quick aside, CFMs are a big deal for understanding the power of leaf blowers. CFMs stands for cubic feet per minutesomething that is not totally intuitive. Basically, CFMs measure the volume or amount of air leaving the leaf blower. A high CFM means that the blower is pushing a lot of air. You may see blowers with high CFMs and low MPH (miles per hour). Blowers with this ratio tend to have wide nozzles and be great for landscaping applications where you may need to move large piles of dry leaves simultaneously. If you have high CFMs with a more narrow nozzle, then you will have a blower with a super high MPHa jet stream of raw power. I will return to this later, but the Ego knocks it out of the park in this realm.

Another reason people love Ego leaf blowers is because of the 56V battery series. Whereas many lawn tool products carry multiple battery voltages such as 18V, 36V, 40V, 60V, and 80Vall from the same company, Ego just has the 56V series. I see this as a huge benefit for Ego enjoyers. The battery voltage is much less important, and many folks I speak with on my YouTube channel find this very confusing. For example, I know of some 18V battery series that deliver power more efficiently than 80V battery series and ultimately better performance.

The 56V series from Ego offers the classic 56V battery across all tools and adjusts the amp-hours (controls runtime) to help make the battery lighter for handheld tools.

Ego Leaf Blower Features

When I got my first 56V 765 CFM Ego Leaf Blower, I was giddy with excitement. I’ve long been an Ego fan but had not owned many Ego tools myself before this leaf blower. When I finally got it, unboxing it was a dream. It came in a few separate pieces that made assembly super easy. There’s the motor and handle, the tube that easily snaps on, and the battery that slides right into the back of the blower. It also came with a battery charger and a few extra nozzle tips.

After assembly, I toyed around with the different functions. Of course, the best place to start is with maximum power. Holy cowI was not ready for what happened next. I pressed the trigger all the way down on high power, and my shoulder cocked back, almost like I had just fired a shotgun. The blower has so much power it seems like it can levitate or fly away. I knew I could definitely make use of that type of power. I then toyed around with the cruise control function, which basically just controls how hard the trigger is squeezed down. For longer jobs, it is nice to have the cruise control function where you don’t have to sit and squeeze and exhaust your hand. Nice!

I’ll talk a bit about how I tested this blower in my backyard, but I want to go ahead and give my overall thoughts. The Ego leaf blower is my favorite handheld leaf blowerperiod. I like this blower better than every gas leaf blower I have used and the dozens of other electric/battery-powered options I have tested. It is an absolute beast, has super high-quality construction, and is part of one of the best battery-powered lawn tool lines in the world.

How We Tested the Ego Leaf Blower

Ego Leaf Blower Test

I immediately put this blower to work in my driveway. I walked through my driveway and went full power absolutely demolishing every blade of grass and piece of mulch along my path. When I reached the end of my driveway near my shed, I hit the turbo button to see how the blower would do with some decent-sized rocks. Yepthe Ego leaf blower absolutely knocked those rocks back into their spot on the side of my driveway, taking some small sticks along with it.

For reference, the Ego leaf blower on max power puts out about 650 CFMs. When you hit the turbo button, the blower launches up to 765 CFMs.

I also tested the run time and charge time on this blower. On the highest setting with the turbo engaged, the blower lasted for about 17 minutes. Without turbo, it lasted for 25 minutes. You can expect this blower to last about 45 minutes if you are intermittently blowing leaves around your backyardwhich is about what I get whenever I take it around my lawn in the fall.

FAQ

How long does an Ego blower last?

Depending on how much force is being used by the blower, the battery can last anywhere from 17 to 60 minutes. For typical use, expect about 35-45 minutes of run time in your yard.

How powerful is the Ego blower?

The Ego blower is one of the most powerful cordless electric leaf blowers in production, with a whopping 765 CFMs of powerwell above most handheld gas blowers.

Is the Ego leaf blower quiet?

The Ego leaf blower is much quieter than any gas blower but still does not have a pleasant sound.

What Other Reviewers and Experts Had to Say

The Ego leaf blower has a bit of lore and is widely regarded as the best electric handheld leaf blower. Many other purchasers from Amazon rank the blower extremely highly, with over 80% of reviewers leaving a full five stars. Folks agree that this blower is extremely powerful and comparable to gas blowers but much easier to use. A few downsides that buyers have noted are the battery life and noiseboth of which are huge adjustments when making the switch to a battery-powered leaf blower.

One reviewer on Ego’s website even went as far as to say, “I was skeptical about a cordless blower being capable of demonstrating the performance level of a gas-powered blower; however, the Ego genuinely meets that high standard.” Another mentioned, “[The Ego blower is] more powerful than my old gas power and much quieter. It does get a bit heavy after about 15 min or so, but not bad.”

Ego Leaf Blower vs. Dewalt Leaf Blower

I’ve used the Ego 765 CFM leaf blower and the Dewalt 20V leaf blower.Dewalt has a great reputation in the battery-powered tool world, notably with its hand tools like power drills and sanders. Its 20V leaf blower is popular because the same 20V battery can work with a ton of other toolsnot just in the landscaping world. This gives Dewalt a unique edge over the Ego because you can save money on different classes of tools.

But the battery portability and lower price point are really the only noticeable benefits of the Dewalt leaf blower. The Ego blower is much more powerful, has more features, and is more versatile. The Ego batteries also stick with the consistent 56V series, whereas Dewalt has 20V, 20V MAX and 60V battery lineups in the lawn space alone.

Final Verdict

Ego Leaf Blower Final Verdict

The Ego leaf blower absolutely lives up to the hype. Its combination of extreme power, ease of use, amazing battery series, and affordability make it the best electric blower on planet Earth (IMHO). I was initially suspicious when I switched from my handheld gas leaf blower to the Ego, but I was blown away (literally) when I revved up the brushless motor for the first time.

I’ll be excited to watch cordless leaf blowers evolve over the next few years. I think many issues with battery run time and weight will continue to be fixed as companies innovate to provide better solutions. Ego has a commanding lead in the electric lawn tool space and proves it with this blower.

We Tried the All-New EcoFlow Delta Pro 3: The Battery Generator to Power Your Entire Home https://www.familyhandyman.com/article/ecoflow-delta-review/ Mon, 08 Jul 2024 14:02:33 +0000 From home backup to mobile workshops and camping, we put the Delta Pro 3 power station with 240V to the test. Here's how it worked.

The post We Tried the All-New EcoFlow Delta Pro 3: The Battery Generator to Power Your Entire Home appeared first on Family Handyman.

]]>
We’re in the process of customizing a classic camper for a colleague. One of his first requests was for it to include a portable power station that could double as a home backup system so that when the grid goes down, he doesn’t lose his year’s stash of elk meat.So when we got the chance to test the new EcoFlow Delta Pro 3 power station, we were particularly excited to see if it would be a good fit for him, as well as for others wanting a versatile home backup system that’s relatively affordable.

Over the last two years, my partner and I have tested dozens of portable power stations from all of the major manufacturers. What we’ve learned through that process is that having access to portable power is a great way to give oneself peace of mind in an age of increasingly severe weather and aging electrical grids. When coupled with solar panels, it’s also a good way to reduce personal use of fossil fuels and make our camping excursions more luxuriousand we’re not alone in any of those thoughts.

“People like the idea of having backup power for independence and reliability, and that tech coupled with solar is just exploding right now,” says Aaron Nichols, part of the research and outreach team at Exact Solar. He cites a projection by SEIA that by 2027, 30% of new homes will include backup, up from just 10% in 2022. Sales of portable power are skyrocketing as well.

But that rise in popularity means that many companies are rushing to jump on the portable power and home backup bandwagon, so it’s easy to make a buying mistake. That’s one of the reasons we’ve taken a deep dive into portable power stations: to help people sort out what they need and what isn’t worth wasting money on.

So, if you’re considering a small home backup system, a quiet replacement for your rumbly RV gas camping generator or a solution for powering a mobile workshop, here’s our take on whether the new EcoFlow Delta Pro 3 is the right fit for you.

What is the EcoFlow Delta Pro 3?

Ecoflow DeltaKARUNA EBERL FOR FAMILY HANDYMAN

We Tried It

EcoFlow Delta Pro 3

A battery generator that powers almost all of your essential home appliances.

The Delta Pro 3 is EcoFlow’s newest high-capacity portable power station. It’s about the size of a suitcase and features 4,000 watt-hours (Wh). It is designed to work as a plug-and-play home backup system and a power source for off-grid play and work. It can run pretty much any power tool, keep Wi-Fi and medical devices going and even give a small boost to your EV range.

Two of the features EcoFlow touts about this model are that it runs quietly and has super-fast charging capabilities. Like other power stations, it can be recharged via a wall outlet, solar panels (portable or fixed), a gas-powered generator or a DC-DC converter installed in a vehicle. But the Delta Pro 3 can also be charged using a combination of methods to reach a combined charging speed of 7000W, which is exceptionally fast (though the practicalities for most of us actually having a setup to achieve that speed are a bit iffy).

This model particularly caught our eye because it includes a 240V outlet, which means we can use it with our portable welding workshop. There’s currently only one other model, the Ankers Solix F3800, with this capability. Couple that with its comprehensive energy management app, 4,000W output that can boost up to 6,000W (enough to run most home systems) and EcoFlow’s solid reputation in the US and worldwide, and we had pretty high expectations for it being a top-quality unit.

It arrived in a particularly sturdy box, with high-density, molded foam around the top and bottom. The packaging might not seem significant, but it could actually come in handy on the camper project. We could use it as a mount to keep it fixed in place and dampen vibrations.

Other bonuses for the camper project: It has a 30-amp RV-type outlet, a sturdy pull handle and built-in wheels, two solar charging ports and 90-degree expansion cable ends, which is a real space saver. And not that this matters for performance, but has a nice look, too. They call the color “liquid metal silver” and the shape a “sports car-inspired design.” To me, it more resembles a portable electric cooler you might find on the space station, but either way, it’s groovy enough to show off to the neighbors.

The battery is LiFePO4 (or LFP), which has become the standard for most portable power stations because of its increased safety and longevity over previously popular NMC battery technology. The power station is capable of running most household systems, including heat pumps, central AC units (under three tons, that have a soft starter), water pumps and refrigerators. If you want all of that to come online automatically during a power outage, you’ll also need to install their Smart Home Panel 2 system.

The Delta Pro 3’s upgrades over its predecessor, the Delta Pro 2, include a 240V outlet, a higher AC output, a faster UPS (uninterrupted power supply) switchover, more solar ports and faster charging capability through the 240V setup.

How We Tested It

We were pretty jazzed to test the Delta Pro 3 because it’s the first large-capacity EcoFlow we’ve gotten our mitts on. As such, we tried it out for a number of uses.

Camping

Ecoflow Delta stow-able pull handle

We didn’t waste any time popping it in the van for a camping excursion. Right off the bat, we were impressed with the stow-able pull handle, which is decently sturdy, and the wheels, which are large enough to make it possible to roll it across the dirt. Thanks to its advanced airflow and heat dissipation, it also delivered on its promise of running quietly.

It ran our 75-liter electric Dometic cooler all night, which wasn’t a surprise4000 is a lot of watt-hours. But, if you have a cooler and want to make sure you have enough juice to keep it running throughout a cloudy day or two with no solar input, or you have larger electrical needs, then you’ll probably want to couple this with an expansion battery. EcoFlow also makes an innovative 220W bifacial (two-sided) portable solar panel, which is pretty nifty for camping as well.

Side note to anyone who still uses a gas generator camping: Please consider ditching it! Portable power stations are nearly silent and maintenance-free, don’t require sloshing around dirty gas cans and don’t overrun the smell of the pines with fumes. In other words, they enable you and everyone around you to enjoy the benefits of being in the wilderness.

Expansion Battery

Ecoflow Delta Expansion battery

It ran our75-liter electric Dometic cooler all night, which wasnt a surprise4000 is a lot of watt-hours. But if you have a cooler and want to make sure you have enough juice to keep it running throughout a few cloudy days with no solar input or if you have larger electrical needs, then youll probably want to couple this with an expansion battery.

Speaking of theexpansion battery, we also tested one of those on our camping excursion. Again, weve tried out several portable power stations with their expansion batteries, and were particularly impressed with the compactness of EcoFlows. It adds another 4,000 watt-hours, with only being roughly half the size of the main power station. It also has nice handles and 90-degree connectors on the cables, saving a lot of space from the in-line ones used by most competitors.

If you have the extra money to buy the Delta Pro 3 bundled with the expansion battery, I would recommend doing so, as you get a package discount, and youll probably end up wanting the expansion in the long run, especially if youre eyeing it for home backup.

EcoFlow also makes an innovative220W bifacial (two-sided) portable solar panel, which is pretty nifty for camping. Its design makes it capable of capturing more watt-hours than standard panels. Its also particularly compact and has a couple of thoughtful features, including a solar guide and legs with elastic that keep them from flapping about when carrying it.

Mobile Workshop

The next test for the Delta Pro 3 was in the workshop. It had no problems running our Miller 180 aluminum welder for several minutes straight, which draws 240V and requires 21 amps. Based on that energy consumption, we calculate it could run continuously for at least 30 minutes or intermittently for much longer.

Predictably, it also worked fine with our electric lawnmower and various tools, such as the chop saw and reciprocating saw. It’s also strong enough to power our 60-gallon air compressor.

Home Appliances and Backup

Ecoflow Delta PV Ports

While we didn’t have the opportunity to install the Smart Home Panel 2 to actually test it as an integrated home backup system, we did plug in our window AC unit and completed a load of laundry (wash and dry). No problems with any of those. But, keep in mind, if you’re getting this for home backup, you’ll need to calculate your watt-hour needs and get enough expansion batteries to fulfill that number. While 4000Wh is likely enough to run your fridge overnight or keep your Wi-Fi or CPAP machines going, it’s probably only enough to run your air conditioning for 15 to 30 minutes.

As for home backup, the Delta Pro 3 has a few other nice features. Because it has two PV (photovoltaic) ports, it can accept enough panels to recharge at 2600W, which means you can get it from empty to full with just a couple of hours of sunlight (or slightly less time than that if using a gas-powered generator). It also has a UPS (uninterrupted power supply) switchover rate of less than 10 ms, which means that when the power goes out, it won’t interrupt sensitive devices like security cameras, computers and servers.

Finally, it includes comprehensive smart energy management systems, so you can schedule it to charge at a specific time of day to maximize power bill savings, pre-set gas generator charging modes to save fuel, prioritize solar charging, and perform many other helpful and sophisticated tasks.

Pros

  • Versatile and pro-worthy, with 240V for large tools and appliances
  • Dual PV inputs, for fast solar charging up to 2600W
  • Exceptionally quiet, when operating at less than 2000W
  • Affordable for limited home backup scenarios
  • Mobile for its size, with sturdy wheels and pull handle
  • More watt-hour expandable than competitors
  • IP65 weatherproof rating

Cons

  • Its shape makes it a little wobbly/top-heavy when pulling it on uneven or rough ground
  • Requires team lifting for most people, though it’s relatively light for its capacity
  • Max watt output is slightly smaller than competitors (but ample for nearly any situation)

FAQ

Ecoflow Delta FAQ

How long will an EcoFlow Delta last?

The EcoFlow Delta Pro 3’s warranty is five years, but in general, LFP battery technology is rated for around 10 years (3,500 full charge cycles), and after that, it should still have around 80% of its capacity.

How long can an EcoFlow Delta run a refrigerator?

It depends on the number of watt-hours (Wh) your refrigerator uses, the set temperature, how efficient the fridge is and how many times you open the door. A typical household fridge uses between 300 to 400W when the compressor is running. Assuming the compressor runs 50% of the time, the Delta Pro 3’s 4000Wh would power it for 20 to 26 hours.

Practically speaking, power stations can only deliver about 80% of their advertised watt-hours because of power loss from the inverter. So, it might actually run a fridge for 16 to 20 hours. But there are a lot of variables involved, so it’s best to calculate it based on your particular circumstances and fridge model.

Is EcoFlow better than Jackery?

Both are reputable and popular companies, however EcoFlow has two notable advantages: They offer a five-year warranty vs. Jackery’s two-and-three-year warranties (which are expandable to five only if you buy it from them online); and all of EcoFlow’s models use LiFePO4 (aka LFP) battery technology, while some of Jackery’s models still use NMC technology, which is generally regarded as less desirable for longevity and safety reasons.

What Other Reviewers/Experts Had to Say

EcoFlow’s Delta Pro 3 portable power station is brand new, so there have not yet been other reviews of it. However, reviews of the previous model, the Delta Pro 2, were overwhelmingly positive. The main downside is the overall size and weight, which is unavoidable for any power station containing so many watt-hours.

One Amazon reviewer wrote: “This battery is a BEAST and surprised me with its design. This is coming from someone who has reviewed over a dozen battery brands, including Goal Zero, Jackery, BigBlue, Rockpals, Aimtom, and the like. Goal Zero and Jackery are two of my favorites, but this Ecoflow surprised me indeed and has skyrocketed to one of the top brands I have tested and used thus far.”

EcoFlow vs Jackery

There’s no Jackery model that compares to EcoFlow’s Delta Pro 3. Jackery’s largest model is 3000Wh, which is 25% smaller with a max watt output of just 3,000W (half of the Delta Pro 3’s when it’s in boost mode). Jackery’s top model also doesn’t have 240V and uses NMC battery technology, which will last for approximately 500 full charge cycles prior to degradation, or roughly 15-20% of the LFP technology used by EcoFlow.

Jackery also has solar and wall-charging speeds of less than half of the Delta Pro 3, and its home power panel is much less sophisticated. On the upside, Jackery’s model weighs 50 pounds less, although it should since it has 25% less capacity.

Final Verdict

Ecoflow Delta portability

EcoFlow’s new Delta Pro 3 is a formidable, versatile power station, and certainly among the best in its class. It’s ahead of the game on many technologies, including integrated safety, quiet running, quick charging and a weatherproof IP65 rating. It’s a fluid solution for someone who wants a battery that can do double duty, backing up key home appliances but also getting tossed into the RV or van when it’s time for camping and other off-grid fun. Just make sure to team lift it, to keep your back healthy!

It is overkill for some situations, such as camping without an electric cooler. You can get a much smaller and more portable model for that. But with 240V power, it’s great for mobile welders and off-grid workshops. If you want to use it for full home backup, and/or to reduce your use of fossil fuels, you’ll need to calculate your watt-hour needs, buy more expansion batteries and have an electrician install the Smart Home Panel 2 or manual transfer switch. But, if all you want is to just keep your food from spoiling and recharge your electronics during a power outage, then it’s all set right out of the box.

A quality hedge trimmer is an essential tool in every homeowner’s landscaping arsenal because well-groomed shrubs, bushes, and hedges contribute significantly to curb appeal. Plus, regularly grooming shrubbery eliminates dead, diseased, and overgrown branches, promoting thicker, denser, and more attractive growth and allowing healthier parts of the plant to flourish.

For context, a hedge trimmer is the best tool for shaping and maintaining landscape foliage with frequent trimming. In contrast, a hedge cutterthe hedge trimmer’s cousinis a more powerful cutting tool for tackling thicker branches and overgrown, neglected hedges in dire need of significant shaping.

However, many homeowners tend to supersize their outdoor equipment needs, believing a tool featuring more power and added functions is ultimately better. This mindset isn’t always accurate, says Brandon Barker, a seasoned landscape professional with more than ten years of experience as general manager of Cleveland-based J. Barker Landscaping, a family business serving clients throughout Northeast Ohio for five decades.

Black And Decker Hedge Trimmer

Barker says DIYers should be leery of overkill equipment or purchasing landscape tools that are too powerful or overly complicated. “This rule of thumb goes for many types of power tools, not just hedge trimmers,” he says, explaining that operators should always want to maintain control and full functionality of the tool in their hands.

Barker advises homeowners to consult with their local professional outdoor power equipment dealer if they have questions or concerns about matching the correct hedge trimmer to their landscape needs. Knowledgeable equipment pros can explain the advantages of hedge trimmers’ various blade lengths and cutting capacities and whether a corded, gas- or battery-powered model is the right fit for the landscape challenges at hand.

With many of these points in mind and based on my nearly 20 years of writing about landscape products and topics for the professional contractor market, I would strongly suggest that homeowners seeking a practical off-the-shelf option look closely at Black and Decker’s cordless hedge trimmer. Following my first-hand experience using and testing this trimmer in my yard, I’ve concluded that Black+Decker’s LHT2240 is a testament to great things in small packages. This hedge trimmer is a prime example that being labeled “minimalistic” doesn’t mean it lacks power or capability. Rather, it’s a tool that delivers on its promises.

What is the Black and Decker Hedge Trimmer?

Black Decker Cordless Hedge TrimmerVIA MERCHANT

We Tried It

Black+Decker Cordless Hedge Trimmer

High performance from a cordless tool.

Black+Decker’s LHT2240 is a cordless, battery-powered tool for trimming hedges, shrubs, and brushes around an average-sized residential landscape. It utilizes a 40V Li-ion rechargeable battery to power a 22-inch, dual-action cutting blade with a -inch cutting capacity, sufficient for manicuring modestly sized greenery.

Right out of the box, I found the LHT2240 to be a no-frills hedge trimmer lacking some of the features and functions of competitors’ similar models. However, after taking it through its paces throughout a spring afternoon, I found the LHT2240 offers an impressive quality of cut, ease of use, a lightweight design, quiet operation, and a rather attractive price point (around $130). The Li-ion battery alone, if purchased separately, runs around $100.

How I Tested It

Black And Decker Hedge Trimmer Test

After donning work gloves and safety glasses, I tested Black+Decker’s cordless hedge trimmer on various shrubbery and hedge-cutting tasks around my and a neighbor’s residential landscape on a sunny May afternoon. During testing, I paid particular attention to the LHT2240’s cut quality, cutting capacity, ease and comfort of use, overall balance, and how the trimmer’s design impacted my fatigue level. I also noted any deficiencies I observed during its operation.

For example, did it vibrate excessively under strain (I found it did not), was it loud (no more than I expected it would), were the safety features sufficient (yes, but I felt the LHT2240 would benefit from a blade sheath when not in use), and was it durable (it did survive a couple of accidental drops unscathed)? Finally, after concluding my afternoon of field testing, I took a deep dive into consumer feedback to compare and contrast my performance experience with others’ observations and experiences with the LHT2240.

Black+Decker’s LHT2240 hedge trimmer is designed for grab-and-go ease, ideal for homeowners who want to tackle trimming tasks without hassle. After I ran the LHT2240 through its paces, here are the features I believe made me take notice:

Battery-Powered

Black And Decker Hedge Trimmer Battery

Forget tangled chords or managing oil and gas mixes with a small engine. Black+Decker’s LHT2240 battery-powered engine offers the user freedom of movement throughout the landscape. When I engaged the LHT2240 in normal trimming sessions, I found a freshly charged 40V Li-ion battery provided me with around 45 minutes of runtime.

The LHT2240 is part of the Black+Decker 40V Max system, allowing users who own other 40V Max Black+Decker tools to interchange batteries across multiple products. Lastly, being battery-powered enables the LHT2240 to operate at a much lower decibel level than its gas-powered cousins. I found this beneficial, contributing to a more peaceful trimming experience.

Maneuverability

At only 6.8 pounds, the LHT2240 is easy to maneuver, and it was comfortable to hold for extended trimming sessions, giving me greater control and precision while cutting. This is a big plus compared to heavier hedge trimmers that can quickly fatigue shoulders and wrists, especially when engaged in overhead work.

The LHT2240’s wrap-around handle provided me with a safe, secure, and comfortable grip at any trimming angle I engaged, further reducing the strain on my hands and arms. A soft grip further enhanced my comfort level during extended cutting sessions.

Quality of Cut

Black And Decker Hedge Trimmer Blades

The LHT2240’s 22-inch dual-action blades provide a precise, clean cut. In addition, I found the blade tackles branches up to -inches thick, which is enough to accommodate the various Forsythia, Boxwood, Arborvitae, Barberry, and Yews around my typical residential landscape.

Maintenance

Black And Decker Hedge Trimmer Charger

Aside from fully charging the battery, the LHT2240 was essentially ready to go out of the box. After a few hours, I field tested the Black+Decker’s LHT2240; I didn’t have the opportunity or need to perform maintenance on my hedge trimmer. However, Black+Decker designed the LHT2240 for easy upkeep, requiring only seasonal lubrication of the blades’ moving parts, more often if excessive use occurs.

Pros

  • Out-of-the-box usability
  • Lightweight and maneuverable
  • Quiet, low vibration
  • User-friendly and intuitive
  • Good quality of cut
  • Cordless convenience
  • Powerful enough for the average residential landscape
  • Solid battery life (around 45 minutes between charges)
  • Minimal regular maintenance
  • Attractive to the price-conscious consumer

Cons

  • Not suitable for heavy-duty tasks
  • Does not include a rotating handle
  • Battery and charger not always included
  • Did not include a blade cover/sheath

FAQ

Black And Decker Hedge Trimmer FAQ

Can you sharpen Black+Decker hedge trimmers?

While Black+Decker indicates the blades can be sharpened and even replaced, I strongly recommend and encourage the average homeowner to allow an experienced power equipment professional to manage this task.

Do you need to oil the Black and Decker hedge trimmer blades?

Black+Decker designed the LHT2240 for easy upkeep, requiring only seasonal lubrication of the blades’ moving parts, and more often if excessive use occurs to prevent sap from gumming up the blade action. Owners can purchase a silicone-based lubricant spray, which won’t attract dirt and debris as much as a 3-in-1 machine oil lubricant.

What Other Reviewers/Experts Had to Say

Homeowners and DIYers who have used the Black+Decker LHT2240 report many of the same findings I observed during my field testing. Overall, I found consumers offer favorable reviews of the LHT2240. Many users praise the hedge trimmer’s ease of use, lightweight and comfortable design, and quiet operations. There were very few mentions of quality control issues, questionable design, or functional breakdowns.

Numerous users report that the 40V battery charges quickly and provides ample runtime to trim hedges and bushes around an average-sized property on a single charge. However, some users, and I concur, suggest investing in a second battery to accommodate longer operating times. However, purchasing a battery and charger separately could be expensive.

Black+Decker Hedge Trimmer vs. Craftsman Hedge Trimmer

To provide greater depth and perspective, I leveraged my first-hand insights with actual user experiences on trusted websites like Amazon to comprehensively compare the Black+Decker LHT2240 with the Craftsman CMEHTS8022 hedge trimmers.

Both the Black+Decker and the Craftsman are lauded for their user-friendly design. Reviewers consistently praise their lightweight construction and maneuverability, making them comfortable to handle for extended trimming sessions. Additionally, both trimmers seem well-built, sturdy, and resilient to accidental damage. From my first-hand experience, I found both the orange-and-black Black+Decker and red-and-black Craftsman hedge trimmers were constructed with the homeowner/DIYer in mind.

Both seemed well-built and solidly constructed, and their wrap-around handles felt comfortable in my hands. While both felt well-balanced, Black+Decker’s 6.8 pounds (with the battery attached) was slightly heavier than Craftsman’s 5.6 pounds. Although I did find Black+Decker’s trimmer had noticeably lower vibration when engaged with greenery, an observation other consumers also noted. Some users found the Craftsman trimmer on the loud side. However, I did not discern a noticeable difference in decibel levels between the two units.

Both models’ 22-inch dual-action blades made quick work shaping topiary throughout my and my neighbor’s yards. While the Black+Decker’s 40V battery supply provided unrestricted freedom of movement around the landscapes for around 45 minutes, Craftsman’s 3.8 Amp motor offered uninterrupted power bound only by the limitations of an extension cord’s length and an available power outlet.

Craftsman’s integrated limb cutter on the end of its reciprocating blade provided the CMEHTS8022 clear-cutting advantage over the LHT2240, an assessment many online reviewers agreed with. Craftsman’s nifty, saw-toothed tool could tackle small branches up to 1.25 inches thick, which the Black+Decker model would struggle against, leaving some users to conclude was a potential lack of power.

The Craftsman CMEHTS8022 corded hedge trimmer is a solid, affordable cutting tool that offers the DIYer a unique set of advantages for around $100. However, if you’re a homeowner who prioritizes maneuverability and all-around ease of use, then the Black+Decker LHT2240, at a price point of around $140 (less during sales and special promotions), is a clear choice. Remember, consider your needs and preferences, including hedge amount and size, how often you intend to trim, and budget as components of your due diligence before purchasing.

Final Verdict

Black And Decker Hedge Trimmer Battery

For the average homeowner, I found the Black+Decker’s LHT2240 40V MAX Lithium-ion 22-inch cordless hedge trimmer offers a compelling combination of convenience, user-friendliness, cut quality and sufficient power for most landscape tasks. While competitors may offer extra features, I found Black+Decker’s LHT2240 is balanced, well-designed and easy to use for operators at any experience level.

The cordless design eliminates the hassle of extension cords, allowing me freedom of movement and making it convenient to accomplish various trimming tasks around my landscape. Best of all, it’s attainable at an attractive price point. If you’re a do-it-yourself homeowner seeking a reasonable and effective means to maintain your hedges, shrubs and bushes, Black+Decker’s LHT2240 is a strong contender to consider.

The great news is that it’s not difficult to acquire Black+Decker’s LHT2240 hedge trimmer. I found most big-box retailers, like Walmart, carry the Black+Decker brand of outdoor power tools, as well as online retail giant, Amazon.

When it comes to property maintenance, having the right tools and machinery can turn a multi-weekend project into an afternoon task. So, having a single tool that can plow, tow, haul, dump and even help take the garbage bins out is a major deal. The newest Polaris Rangerthe 2025 XP 1000 NorthStaris just that tool.

Those who are familiar with utility-task vehicles (UTV) know that Polaris is a trusted name in the industry. The company, which began making snowmobiles in the 1950s, designs and manufactures everything from motorcycles and pontoon boats to ATVs and side-by-side utility-task vehicles.

Their 2025 Ranger lineup includes customer-driven improvements like increased durability, better transmission and more included features like a 7-inch display console and built-in sound system from JBL (which is one of our favorite home speaker companies).

I got to try out the premium and ultimate versions of the 2025 Polaris NorthStar myself to get a feel for the performance and functionality of these home improvement powerhouses.

What is the Polaris Ranger XP 1000 NorthStar?

Ranger is a brand of side-by-side off-road vehicles that look like a pick-up truck, but are closer to the size of a golf cart. They have power steering, gas and brake pedals, gear shift, and bench seating in the cab, a reinforced front bumper and grille, and a large truck bed that can be tilted up with a simple latch system.

The Ranger XP 1000 NorthStar is equipped with a closed cab thats decked out with heating and air conditioning, a plethora of cup holders and storage, a console with GPS and trail maps, and built-in speakers that can connect to your phone. Paired with the 82-horsepower engine, 2,500 pound towing capacity and 1,000 pound carrying capacity, the Polaris NorthStar can be used to assist with lawn maintenance on large residential properties, daily chores on farms and ranches, and even getting docks and boats in and out of the water.

The powerful and thoughtful design of this revamped Ranger is something to behold. I found it to not only have the versatility and strength to tackle just about any outdoor chore, but itll also keep you comfortable while you do it.

Polaris Ranger XP 1000 NorthStar

Striking the perfect balance between comfort and performance, the 2025 Ranger XP 1000 NorthStar from Polaris is the ultimate maintenance tool for your property.

Polaris Ranger XP 1000 NorthStar Product Features

Closed Cab

One of the best aspects of this UTV is the completely enclosed cab. Riding around in the NorthStar on a Texas ranch meant a lot, and I mean a lot, of kicked-up dirt, dust, mud and water, which would have been pretty miserable without the closed cab and filtered air system.

In addition to clean air, you can also adjust the Polaris NorthStars temperature with heating and air conditioning. The former was a lifesaver in the Texas heat and the latter will make early morning snow removal a much more enjoyable experience. If you want to appreciate some good weather or coordinate with someone outside the vehicle, you can always roll down the windows. The ultimate NorthStar has power windows while the premium has crank windows. For even more flexibility, the ultimate NorthStar has a tip-out windshield thatll make you feel like youre in an open cab.

I also really appreciate the thoughtfulness of the cabs design. The bench seats and rear-hinged doors allow for easy in and out, which is really handy when working on a project. Plus, the LED headlights switch is conveniently located to the left of the steering wheel so you can quickly illuminate what youre working on, even when youre out of the UTV.

Included Tech

Fhma24 Polaris Ranger Xp 1000 Northstar Caroline Stanko Ssedit 03

The ultimate edition of the Ranger XP 1000 NorthStar comes standard with some pretty cool electronics, the first being a 7-inch touchscreen display with Ride Command. This free program is an integrated GPS system where you can load existing trails, map new trails, view and communicate with other Polaris vehicles or snowmobiles, utilize a backup camera and, of course, see drive information like the speed, gas level and direction. To take things to the next level, you can add a Ride Command+ subscription that provides vehicle maintenance and diagnostic information so your ride stays in tip-top shape.

Also included with the ultimate edition is an all-new sound system backed up by JBL speakers. I can attest that these speakers sound great and are loud. Youll have no trouble hearing the radio or streaming music while riding or working outside the UTV. You can connect your phone via Bluetooth to sync with Ride Command to listen to music and get texts and calls, or plug in your phone with the USB port when youre low on battery.

Power and Durability

A big selling point for the 2025 Polaris Ranger line is the upgraded front end. The redesigned front bumper and grille are larger and more durable than previous iterations, for improved performance and appearance. Attached to the front end is a heavy-duty winch with a synthetic rope and auto-stop feature that will make light work of downed trees, loading items onto a trailer or pulling yourself or another vehicle out of a stuck spot.

With an 82-horsepower engine and new Gen 2 transmission, the Polaris Ranger XP 1000s shift easily between gears and can reach up to 60 miles per hour. When paired with the units three throttle control modes (performance, standard, work) you can expect to power over rough terrain and steep slopes, and have more acceleration control.

The NorthStar ultimate and premium are now equipped with 29-inch wheels and four-wheel, two-wheel and one-wheel drive, the latter of which can be used to preserve wet grass or other fragile ground from being torn up while you work. The larger wheels and 14-inch ground clearance mean you can stay dry when driving through flooded fields or low waterways.

Versatility and Add-Ons

There are almost endless uses for the Polaris Ranger NorthStar. The large cargo box can hold up to a thousand pounds and has a simple lever latch that allows you to tip the box up. This is incredibly helpful when moving heavy rocks, transporting and laying mulch, or planting trees and other large plants around your property.

The cargo box also has corrugated sides and bed to securely hold storage containers and tool boxes or partition the bed into separate sections. Additionally, hitch a trailer to the back and use the 2,500 pound towing capacity to move heavy equipment, lawn tools, decking or even a light boat.

Like there are many ways to upgrade a utility trailer, there are a ton of add-ons and accessories available for the Ranger NorthStar line. From storage racks and bed extenders to hydraulic lifts, generators and covers, Polaris has all the gear you can imagine on their website and Amazon. Two of my favorite add-ons are the snow plow and trash can hauler which turn cumbersome chores into a fun (and productive!) ride. If youre not quite sure which accessories would work best for you, Polaris offers six packages that filter down common tools and add-ons for large properties, farm work, hunting, trail riding and winter prep.

How We Tested It

Fhma24 Polaris Ranger Xp 1000 Northstar Caroline Stanko Ssedit 01

I got the chance to test out the Ranger XP 1000 NorthStar premium and ultimate vehicles at a ranch in Texas. I drove the premium NorthStar (the unit without a dash display and speakers) for about five hours and the ultimate (with those features) for about an hour and a half, mostly off-road. This included rocky ground, dusty trails, low waterways and up and down steep slopes. Heres what I thought.

Ride Performance

Starting to ride this side-by-side couldnt have been easier. After hopping into the UTV, I just turned the key, pushed the gear shift and started driving. I started off on a dusty dirt road, and can this thing move. Though the top speed is 60 miles per hour, even going half that made me feel like I was flying. This would be incredibly convenient for those with especially large properties to move around in a flash.

Once I switched over to off-trail riding, the strength of the Ranger NorthStar really shined. Despite being met with rocky earth that verged on boulders, the vehicle in four-wheel drive powered through without missing a beat. I was actually pretty impressed with how smooth the ride was, given the uneven terrain. Dont get me wrong, there were certainly bumps, but I never felt jolted or overly jostled, likely because of the larger tires and dual a-arm suspension.

When I was met with steep up or downward slopes, I tried out the performance and work throttles. When engaged, these modes definitely gave the UTV more power and control when moving up and down steep hills. Rather than sliding down or back a big decline/incline, the Ranger gripped the road and moved evenly, even when moving slowly.

Speaking of grip, I also drove the side-by-side through a few flooded spots on the trail as well as a flooded road. Though the water was about a foot deep, the vehicle had no problem driving through the water. It should be noted that even with the large tires, high clearance and sealed suspension, if you drive through water higher than the clearance, you will get a bit of moisture in the floor of the cab. Thats fairly high, though, and I didnt experience any water issues during my drive.

Something that I particularly enjoyed about riding these Rangers was the improved powered steering. The vehicle was incredibly easy to navigate, and even surprisingly nimble with a 160-inch turning radius. I could definitely see these side-by-sides being incredibly useful in cleaning up and maintaining a large home property.

Comfort

Fhma24 Polaris Ranger Xp 1000 Northstar Caroline Stanko Ssedit 04

When it comes to creature comforts, it doesnt get much better than the Ranger XP 1000 NorthStar. When I first saw the bench seats and small, glass-mounted headrests, I was a bit nervous about how my body would feel after a few hours of driving. My fears were unfounded though, and I was pleasantly surprised at how comfortable I was. If youre planning on riding around all day, every day, I could see you wanting to add more lumbar support or an extra seat cushion (our favorite seat cushion is in this list of the best car accessories), but more casual users will be perfectly content with the bench alone. The steering wheel can be tilted front and back, so it can be adjusted for drivers of different heights and sizes.

One of the best parts of this vehicle is the closed cab and climate control. As I mentioned, I drove the side-by-side off-road in Texas, which meant very hot and dusty rides. The HVAC system kept about 99% of the debris out (I had just a touch of dirt around my sunglass line and in my nostrils after several hours of driving). The air conditioning was an actual lifesaver. Even though it was only mid-April, it was extremely hot and sunny out and the air conditioning in the cab worked quickly and consistently to keep me cool. I can only imagine how great the heating element would be in the winter months, especially if you have to do some early morning plowing.

For the time I was able to drive the ultimate model, I made full use of the JBL speaker system and display screen. Using Bluetooth, my iPhone connected with little effort and I cranked the tunes. My music could be easily heard over the rumble of the engine and clearly heard outside the cab when the doors were open. When it comes to the touchscreen display, my favorite part was seeing the other Rangers in my group driving the trail through Ride Command. If you have multiple Polaris vehicles on a farm or together for an off-roading trip, making sure everyone is accounted for is a huge safety plus.

For those who are only interested in owning one Ranger NorthStar, I understand going with the paired-down premium version, without the display and sound system. This was the model I drove the most and it was great. Its certainly more utilitarian and cheaper (the premium Ranger NorthStar is five grand less than the ultimate) but I will say I did miss the additional tech of the ultimate after switching back to the premium. Theres just something about riding around with the music blasting!

Usability

Fhma24 Polaris Ranger Xp 1000 Northstar Caroline Stanko Ssedit 05

The 2025 line has all the functionality and versatility of the Rangers previous iterations, plus a few bells and whistles. On the front of the side-by-side is a new front bumper and grille that will protect the front of the cab (and, well, you) from bumps and hits while driving as well as when pulling something on the winch. The winch itself is built into the UTV with a synthetic rope to resist fraying and a handy auto-stop thatll keep the end of the rope from being rolled into the winch. Plus, the winch is remote-controlled, so you can pull or release items from a safe distance.

At the back of the Ranger, the bed can be titled up with a lever near the middle of the vehicle. I was surprised how easily the bed lifted once unlatched, thanks to the added hydraulics. This means moving and dumping rocks, dirt, feed or sand are much more manageable tasks than if you had a wheelbarrow alone. Also, if you add a winch to the top of the cab, you can pull large logs or game hands-free into the bed, which will totally save your back. Once tiled up, you can get a good look at the upgraded ProStar engine and can perform routine maintenance as needed.

As I mentioned before, the bed of the truck has grooves along the bottom and up the sides to more securely hold storage bins, tool boxes and coolers. You can also partition the bed with a couple of boards as dividers. Additionally, there are round and rectangular holes all along the top of the walls where you can install storage or tool racks, mounts, a bed extender or flag pole, the options are extensive. An example of how thoughtful the design of this side-by-side is the inclusion of four cupholder spots on the tailgate so you can keep your beverage close as you work outside the vehicle.

Pros

  • Closed cab with effective air filtration and climate control
  • Powerful engine with lots of control
  • Smoother ride
  • JBL sound system standard on ultimate
  • Very versatile
  • Display includes GPS, trails and tracking other Polaris products

Cons

  • Expensive
  • Might be overkill if you have a smaller property, or only casually hunt or trail ride
  • Add-ons can be pricey, especially when purchasing multiple

You can also purchase additional or extended coverage with the Polaris Protection Plan which covers mechanical and electric parts, repairs, trip protection and vehicle pickup.

Can-Am vs Polaris

The most similar product on the market to the Polaris NorthStar ultimate is the Defender Limited from Cam-Am. These UTVs are closed cabs that seat 3 with same horsepower, ground clearance, box capacity, towing capacity and wheel drive options, and both have a dump bed, rear camera, tilt windshield with wipers, LED headlights and lots of add-on options. The Defender and Ranger are also similar in overall size. The base Cam-Am Defender costs $29,899 and the base Polaris NorthStar ultimate is $32,999 (the premium version comes in at $27,999).

While both UTVs have a display screen, the Polaris NorthStars is much more sophisticated. How To Cut Concrete https://www.familyhandyman.com/article/concrete-saw-cutting/ Tue, 11 Jun 2024 18:00:58 +0000 https://www.familyhandyman.com/?p=618753 Cutting concrete can be an intimidating task. Here's how do it safely and with professional results.

The post How To Cut Concrete appeared first on Family Handyman.

]]>
Whether you need to fit pavers together or trim up a patio, it could very well require cutting concrete with a saw. It’s a physically demanding job, but it can be manageable if you choose the correct tools and practice key techniques.

If you’re embarking on a concrete project, here’s how to set yourself up for success with cutting concrete.

What Tools Do You Need for Cutting Concrete?

To cut concrete, people commonly use a handheld circular saw and diamond-bit blade, but you can also use:

  • A masonry table saw, which makes it easier for beginners to make straight or mitered cuts;
  • An angle grinder, for small and detailed projects like thin veneer and pavers; and
  • A chainsaw for larger projects.
  • A demolition or cut-off saw for cutting concrete slabs or pavers.

Some saws are classified as wet saws, which require a water source. They are great for helping to keep dust down, especially indoors where there is less ventilation. The downside is that they are less maneuverable. Whichever saw you use, you will also need a diamond-bit blade.

What Type of Saw Blades Do You Need for Cutting Concrete?

Three different types of Diamond saw blades are displayed on a light blue grid background. The blades have various designs and labels, including a segmented blade, a continuous rim blade, and a turbo blade.

Diamond-tipped blades are required for cutting concrete. Choose a blade hardness that matches the material you’re cutting.

“If it’s relatively soft, coarse concrete such as that [is] found in wall block, you want a blade that won’t wear down quickly,” says Jeremy Martin of Willow Gates Landscaping. “If you’re cutting hard, dense concrete with a finer aggregate such as concrete pavers or some natural stone, you need a blade that will wear down faster to expose fresh diamonds to continue cutting.”

How To Cut Concrete

If you are concrete saw-cutting concrete:

  • Prep the area by clearing it of debris, especially metals that could get caught in the blade.
  • Adjust the saw for the desired depth of the cut.
  • Mark the lines you want to cut using chalk, a marker, paint or a grease pen. “Make sure to mark these spots completely and clearly to prevent missing them when concrete dust goes everywhere,” says Brandon Walker, superintendent at ASAP Restoration.
  • Put on safety gear, including eye and ear protection. Wear a respirator to prevent inhaling dust. A protective suit can also help you avoid getting covered in dust and debris.
  • If you’re making wet cuts, keep a consistent water supply running, preventing the saw blade from overheating, binding or warping. For dry cutting, let the blade cool down every 30 to 45 seconds.
  • Before placing the blade on the concrete, let it get up to speed, then lower it onto the surface slowly to prevent it from binding.
  • As you cut, keep your blade squared up with the line of your mark.
  • Once you’ve finished your cut line, release the trigger and let the blade spin down inside the cut before removing it from the cutting area.
  • Clean up the dust. “Vacuums are best for cleaning up concrete dust because they prevent spreading and aeration caused by brooms while sweeping,” says Walker.

Also, whenever possible, bring the saw to the work area rather than carrying the product to the saw, says Martin. “Paving and wall materials are heavy, and it’s physically demanding to move them to the saw and back to where they will be installed.”

Cutting Different Types of Concrete

If you’re cutting a curve, Martin recommends forming your line using pex, hose or fiberglass tent poles. “When cutting wall block, a handheld saw may not cut the whole way through a block,” says Martin. “In this situation, mark the block, then cut as far as the saw blade will reach. Then flip the block, and cut the remainder.”

Dos and Don’ts for Cutting Concrete

A person wearing protective glasses, ear protection, gloves, and a yellow jacket is using a circular saw to cut through a concrete slab next to a garden bed with green plants and flowers. The person is kneeling on one knee for better control of the saw.

When cutting concrete, always:

  • Wear safety gear, including hearing, eye and respiratory protection.
  • Check the condition of your blade.
  • Choose the correct type of blade for the concrete you are cutting.
  • Clean up wet slurry before it dries. If it dries, removing it could cause damage to surfaces.
  • Actively control dust.

“Unless it’s a very shortcut, dust control is essential,” says Martin. “Cutting generates a lot of dust, some of which is harmful respirable crystalline silica.”

Most saws have a built-in water attachment that will control the dust by wetting it, and some have built-in vacuums like those from IQ Power. Another option is a central dust collector such as those offered by Dust Killer Tools.

“Using a vacuum for dust control will result in a much cleaner job site, without a huge cloud of dust drifting over the work area, neighboring homes and cars,” says Martin.

Some mistakes to avoid include:

  • Using a wet blade without using water, which will damage it.
  • Cutting concrete in confined spaces without proper ventilation.
  • Using dull blades, which will lower the quality of the cut.
  • Forcing the blade. If it isn’t cutting properly, instead make multiple shallower passes.
  • Cutting through objects embedded in the concrete, like rebar and electrical wires.
  • Pulling the saw out of the cut before the blade has spun down.
  • Attempting to use water for dust control with a non-designated wet saw (this creates a risk for electrical shock).

“Poor planning is also a common issue when dealing with slab cutting,” says Walker. “Measure everything until you are positive that it’s right, then triple check again. You can only make the cut once, and with concrete it isn’t easy to fix mistakes.”

When to Hire a Pro

If you are unsure of your ability, or if it feels dangerous, then call a pro. You might also hire a pro if you have to do major cuts or are unsure about crossing over plumbing and electrical lines.

“Saving money by doing things the DIY way is great, but not if it comes at the cost of an insurance claim for water damage when you cut through a pipe, or a blackout when you slice the electrical line,” says Walker.

FAQs

How long do diamond blades last for cutting concrete?

They can last anywhere from about 10 hours to 100 hours, depending on the manufacturer, technique, surface material and torque of the saw. “If doing a significant amount of cutting, spend at least $100 to $175 on a good blade,” says Martin. “They are well worth the investment!”

Is cutting concrete difficult?

Yes. “Not only is it physically tasking work, which involves heavy equipment and materials, but it is also dirty and dangerous too,” says Walker.

Can you rent tools for cutting concrete?

Yes. You can rent concrete saw-cutting tools from most home improvement box stores, as well as tool rental companies. “The rental cost may vary from $50 to $1,000 depending on your project size and the number of tools, you may require,” says licensed contractor Jay Sanders.

How long does it take to cut concrete?

How long it takes to cut concrete depends on the length and depth of the cut, the quality of the saw and your experience level. “Smaller projects can be accomplished within a few minutes, whereas larger ones might require several hours,” says Sanders. “If you cut through a 4-inch thick concrete slab, using a professional-grade saw, it may demand approximately 45 minutes to one hour.”

Should you wear a mask when cutting concrete?

Yes, definitely. You should wear, at minimum, an N95 respirator mask, plus use other dust control methods such as water or a vacuum.

“Silica dust is a real danger, and it should be feared just as much as people do with mold or asbestos because it can cause serious health problems when not respected,” says Walker.

Recalls are never fun. As a consumer, whenever a recall is announced, it’s vital to check to see if any of the products you own are on the list. If they are, it’s important to follow the steps laid out by the manufacturer to return, repair, or replace them and keep you and your family safe. On June 5, Kawasaki Motors USA announced a recall of certain engines in their lawn and garden equipment.

Kawasaki Motors USA has recalled over 68,500 engines in the United States and a further 900 in Canada due to the fact that these engines are prone to dangerous overheating. Read on as we explain which engines have been recalled, why, and what to do if you own one.

Which Kawasaki Engines Are Recalled?

Kawasaki Motors Recalls Engines Due To Fire Hazard

According to the US Consumer Product Safety Commission, the recall impacts the following Kawasaki Motors USA lawn and garden equipment brands:

  • Bad Boy Mowers
  • BigDog
  • Bobcat
  • Cub Cadet
  • Hustler
  • John Deere
  • Kubota

If you purchased any equipment on this list between April 2021 and December 2023, it’s likely included in the recall.

Why Are These Kawasaki Engines Recalled?

The engines on the recall list have a tendency to overheat and run the risk of burning the operator. In some cases, they have even caught fire.

Don’t ignore this Kawasaki Motors USA recall. If you or your loved ones are injured or the engine catches fire, it will be a much more expensive fix than simply dealing with the recall in a timely manner.

11 Tips for Maintaining Your Emergency Generator https://www.familyhandyman.com/article/generator-maintenance/ Mon, 10 Jun 2024 16:35:11 +0000 https://www.familyhandyman.com/?p=619212 What good is a portable generator if it doesn't work when you need it? Here's how to keep yours running and ready to go.

The post 11 Tips for Maintaining Your Emergency Generator appeared first on Family Handyman.

]]>
A powerful spring thunderstorm rolled through Texas earlier this week, bringing eighty-mile-per-hour winds that toppled trees and knocked out power to hundreds of thousands of people, including me. Luckily, I have an emergency generator (I am an electrician, after all). So, after a few hours of nervously watching my computer’s power bar dwindle and thinking about the food in my fridge, I rolled the generator out of the garage and fired it up.

I’m glad I did. For two long days, that generator came through like a champ. No spoiled food! Over the years, I’ve used generators both at home and at work, and I’ve learned how to keep them running often through trial and error. But you don’t have to be an electrician like me to keep your generator in tip-top shape. Below, check out how to maintain your emergency generator so it’s ready to go after a storm or natural disaster.

Read the Manual

“Instructions? Who needs ’em?” I can’t tell you how many electricians I know who do things by instinct. It’s almost a matter of pride. But when it comes to generator maintenance, I do not recommend following that lead. Generators take fuel (such as gasoline or propane) and turn it into electricity, and the internal workings have many moving parts. So, take some time to read the manual. It’ll lay out maintenance details and timing requirements specific to your generator.

Run It Periodically

Don’t wait for an emergency to know if your generator works. Start it up once a month or so and run it for about 30 minutes. Once it’s running, plug in an appliance (a portable space heater is easy) to ensure it handles a load. Something with an inrush current (aka starting current), like a fridge or an air conditioner, is also a good choice. Not only will this “exercise” the generator, but it’ll alert you to problems now, reducing your stress when an actual emergency happens.

Generators emit carbon monoxide, just like car exhaust. Whether testing or running your generator, keep it at least 20 feet from your home and never place it near open windows or doors.

Use the Right Fuel

Today’s gasoline often contains ethanol, which is fine for your car engine but not great for a generator, especially in large amounts. Keep the ethanol content of your gasoline under 10% to keep it from gumming up the carburetor, and never use E85. Your best option is regular unleaded gasoline. No matter what, avoid using old, stale gas. Swap out your stored gasoline every few months.

Propane doesn’t age like gasoline does, so if your generator is propane or dual-fuel like mine, it’s fine to keep a full propane tank on hand, ready to go.

Add a Fuel Stabilizer

A black, rectangular oil drain pan with a spout on one side, containing two bottles of motor oil with beige caps and silver labels, placed on a grid-patterned background.

Gasoline breaks down over time, and the resulting gummy deposits can clog and corrode your generator. Fuel stabilizers keep gas fresh by removing water, preventing separation and cleaning the fuel system. Generator manufacturers recommend adding fuel stabilizers every time you fill the tank. Always add the stabilizer to the gas can, not directly to the generator, and run the generator for a few minutes after filling to distribute the stabilizer.

Change the Oil

Oil lubricates the moving parts inside the generator, dissipating heat. Just like your car, if you don’t change the oil in your generator, you’ll eventually regret it. Many generator manufacturers, including mine, recommend changing the oil after the first 25 hours or the first month. After the initial break-in period, switch to every 6 months or 50-hour increments (or as recommended). If you’re operating it in dusty or dirty conditions or under heavy load, change the oil once a month, no matter the hours.

Start the generator and let it run to warm up the oil. Turn it off and allow it to cool slightly. To prevent an accidental start, disconnect the battery and the spark plug boot, which is the rubber cap covering the spark plug. Place a pan under the drain plug and drain the old oil. Dispose of it in an environmentally safe manner, replace the plug and fill it with fresh oil. Check the oil every time you use the generator.

Clean the Air Filter

Clogged air filters restrict airflow into the engine, reducing the performance, efficiency and life of your generator. Clean the air filter every 6 months or 50 hours to remove contaminants and improve airflow. The foam air filter is soaked in oil, so while it’s not hard to clean, it is a little messy. Wear gloves to protect your hands.

Locate the air filter compartment and remove the filter. Submerge the filter in warm, soapy water (dish soap works great) and gently squeeze don’t wring. Once clean, refill the bowl with water and squeeze the filter to rinse. Pat dry, then air dry thoroughly.

Before putting the filter back, you have to re-oil it. Place a small amount of clean engine oil in a container and dip it in the filter. Squeeze to distribute and remove excess oil. (Too much oil will smoke when you start up the generator.) Replace the air filter after 300 hours or follow your manufacturer’s directions.

Clean the Spark Arrestor

Spark arrestors are screens that keep flammable debris from your generator’s exhaust from flying out and starting a fire. Depending on your model, the spark arrestor could be held in place by screws or a clamp, and you may have to remove a panel on the back to access it.

Let your generator cool down completely before cleaning the spark arrestor. Unscrew or unclamp the arrestor and pull it out, then scrub it with a wire brush to remove carbon deposits. Do this every 100 hours or 6 months of regular use. If you notice it’s damaged, replace it.

Check the Spark Plug

A portable generator is placed on a lawn in the foreground, with a large house in the background displaying illuminated windows. Inside the house, two people are visible through the windows, possibly engaged in conversation. The scene is set during the evening.

A spark plug ignites the air and fuel mixture that runs your generator, and it needs to be clean and in good condition for best performance. To inspect it, remove the spark plug boot when the engine is cool. Wipe off the area around the plug so debris can’t fall inside once you remove it from the generator.

Use an appropriately sized spark plug wrench, which might be included with your generator, or a deep socket to remove the plug. Clean the spark plug with rubbing alcohol or a commercial plug cleaner and a brush. Then, check the gap between the electrodes using a special tool called a feeler gauge or gap tool. Your generator manual will tell you what the gap should be (mine is 0.024 0.032 inch).

If you notice pitting or corrosion, or if the ceramic insulator is cracked, replace the spark plug. Otherwise, clean it every 6 months and replace it every year.

Store It Correctly

Before putting your generator away in the shed or garage, allow it to cool down for at least 30 minutes. If you’re using propane to fuel your generator, close and disconnect the tank. Wipe the generator down with a cloth to remove dust, dirt and debris, paying attention to the air vents. Cover the generator with a breathable cover to keep out dust, keep moisture down and prevent rust and corrosion.

If you are storing your generator for an extended period of time, drain the fuel tank and carburetor float bowl. Locate the drain screw at the bottom of the float bowl, and have a container ready to catch the fuel. To drain the tank, you’ll need a manual siphon. Always transfer gas into an approved container. Run the generator until it stops to use up any residual gas. Follow your manual for specific instructions.

Charge the Battery

If you know your generator will be sitting for a while, charge the battery about once a month overnight. Check to see if your generator comes with a 12-volt charging cable, and plug it into a wall receptacle. You can also put it on a trickle charger. My generator charges itself once it gets going, but not all generators do, so once again, read your manual!

FAQs

How long can a generator last if it is well-maintained?

It depends. High-end generators will likely last longer than budget ones, and a continuously running generator will wear out faster than one used after the occasional blackout. A good rule of thumb for a well-maintained portable generator is about 2,000 to 3,000 hours.

How long can a home run off of a generator?

It depends. Theoretically, a generator will run your home for as long as it keeps working. If you have to run your generator continuously, say, for weeks after a major hurricane, shut it down periodically to perform routine maintenance, as indicated in the manual.

Best Overall Mini Chainsaw

Dewalt Cordless Battery Powered Chainsaw

Pros:

  • High-quality brand
  • Lightweight
  • 3-year warranty
  • Ships with oil
  • Versatile battery packs

Cons:

  • Pricey

The Dewalt Mini Chainsaw was one of two that shipped with bar and chain oil. This was one of the first things I noticed upon unpackaging it, and it was indeed a welcome accessory. As with most of the saws, it required virtually nothing to get up and running. The device has the usual black and yellow Dewalt styling and uses 20v batteries that are common across many Dewalt tools such as drills, drivers, and saws.

It shipped with a 20V three-amp-hour battery, which was plenty of power to cut through everything I planned to trim in my yard (which is about an acre). Had I planned on taking down all the invasive Austrian pines to a length that my fire pit could handle, I definitely would have run out of juice. Still, overall, the three-amp-hour battery did the trick, and the 20V was plenty of power to cut through four- to six-inch diameter fruit and pine trees.

The brushless motor ran quietly, and the device, which weighed about 5 pounds with the battery attached, was light enough to work with for extended periods. A tool is required to adjust the chain tension, but the tool is included and stored on the device.

EGO Lawn Mower Review: I Tried This Self-Propelled Mower and Was Shocked by Its Performance https://www.familyhandyman.com/article/ego-lawn-mower-review/ Tue, 09 Apr 2024 22:03:34 +0000 https://www.familyhandyman.com/?p=608046 We put the EGO Self-Propelled mower to the test to see if it was a good fit for those with medium-sized lawns.

The post EGO Lawn Mower Review: I Tried This Self-Propelled Mower and Was Shocked by Its Performance appeared first on Family Handyman.

Being a solo homeowner means I’m responsible for ALL of the chores. From cleaning the house to maintaining the lawn, it’s a lot of work, so I try to find the best tools to keep everything maintained. Although I eventually wanted to purchase one of the best robot lawn mowers to take on the job of mowing the lawn for me, I wanted to find a solid electric mower I could use in the meantime.

I tested the EGO Self-Propelled lawn mower to see if it’s up to standard and makes mowing the lawn less of a chore. After four cuts, it’s already better than my old push-mower and officially the newest addition to my time-saving tool stockpile. The EGO Self-Propelled lawn mower is officially my new favorite lawn tool and an option I confidently recommend to other homeowners looking for a powerful mower with all the bells and whistles

What is the EGO Self-Propelled Mower?

The EGO Self-Propelled lawn mower is a 21-inch 56-volt Lithium-ion Self-Propelled cordless lawn mower that is great for small to medium-sized lawns. From the EGO Power+ Line of cordless power tools, the EGO mower is advertised to have the “power and performance of petrol, but without the noise, fuss and fumes.”

After using the EGO mower, I can confirm that this is a powerful unit that lives up to the hype. This mower has an abundance of features, including LED lights, an impressive runtime, a self-propel feature and the ability to fold the mower to store compactly. Outside of features, this mower packs a punch and has simplified my mowing experience.

We Tried It

EGO POWER+ 21

EGO's 21-inch 56-volt cordless lawn mower is a powerful and easy-to-use mower that's perfectly suited for medium-sized lawns.

EGO Self-Propelled Mower Features

Pre-Assembled

Ego Self Propelled Mower

The EGO Self-Propelled mower came pre-assembled and took less than 10 minutes to remove the secure packaging and adjust to my preference. As a note, the angle of the mower handle is adjustable, but the length is not since the handle must be fully extended for the unit to function. The battery arrived half-charged, and it took around 30 minutes to fully charge and get outside.

Ease of Use

Ego Self Propelled Mower Tyres

The EGO Self-Propelled mower is extremely easy to use. The unit is lightweight and has smooth rolling wheels, allowing it to glide over your lawn. The handle deck includes instructions with photos to remind you to extend the handle fully, press the start button and then squeeze the bar to start mowing. The self-propel feature is also easy to use and only requires you to set your speed and squeeze one or both of the green handles to start. The mower didn’t have any issues getting over yard debris or raised areas in my yard and was able to easily take curves around trees and a fire pit.

Cutting Specifications

The EGO mower can customize both your cut type and style when mowing. This mower can cut in six heights ranging from 1.5 to 4.0 inches and can mulch, bag or discharge grass clippings from the side. I love the ability to change the way I cut to prioritize the health of my yard. When the grass is too long, I love raising the height and bagging any excess grass and then lowering the height and mulching the rest to help increase my soil health and reduce weeds. Switching between functions is simple and takes minimal time.

Battery Life

Ego Self Propelled Mower

The EGO Mower comes with numerous battery configurations when purchasing your mower. For my lawn, I opted for the single 7.5Ah battery. This battery is a little heavier than other batteries I’ve used, coming in right around 6 pounds, but it packed a punch. The EGO brand prides itself on its batteries and includes many features within its battery line including keep-cool technology and fast charging.

The battery lasted me a full 40 minutes while using the self-propel feature on a lower to medium setting, and just under 50 minutes when I used the feature on low. My yard is mostly flat so using the self-propel feature on its fastest setting isn’t needed, but if I had more hills, I would expect the battery to last 30+ minutes on the highest speed. If you do have a yard that has more hills, I would recommend getting a backup battery to account for the use of the self-propel feature. The one thing I don’t love about the EGO battery is the cost-it’s expensive compared to other electric mowers on the market so purchasing a backup can be pricey.

Extra Features

Ego Self Propelled Mower

The EGO mower has a few extra features outside of its amazing battery life and versatility. This includes independently controlled LED lights for added visibility, the ability to fold for compact storage between cuts and up to a 5-year warranty on the unit itself.

How We Tested It

After a few weeks of higher-than-normal temperatures, I was able to put the EGO mower to the test on the first mow of the season. That was followed by three additional mows after a week of rain that resulted in thick grass and some exploding clover patches in my yard. While my medium-sized yard is mostly flat, I do have some small hills in my backyard, a ton of trees and a firepit that always seemed to be a nuisance to cut around with my old mower, so I made sure to check the EGO mower’s maneuverability with these obstacles.

Cut Quality

The most important aspect of a mower is how well it cuts your lawn. With as many cut options as this mower has, I was already expecting a good cut but was still surprised by just how great it was. The first time using this mower was my first lawn cutting of spring, so the grass and weeds were overgrown and things were a mess. Despite that, the ECO Mower cut through everything like butter. Even when hitting the worst parts of my lawn that would have choked up previous mowers, I had no issues with the EGO mower. The cut on my lawn was even and clean, and after my fourth mow, I’m still just as impressed.

Maneuverability

Lady Mowing the lawn with EGO Self Propelled Mower

With my yard having multiple obstacles, maneuverability is very important. To test the maneuverability, I pushed this mower to all the problem spots to see how it would do. The wheels spun smoothly and handled pits and roots like a champ. This mower has a great turn radius, and didn’t give me any issues when making my way through the trees and around the fire pit. Plus, the mower is surprisingly light, clocking in at a dainty 62 poundsan impressive 10 pounds lighter than my old gas mowerwhich made it easy to push.

Speed

Speed options on Ego Self Propelled Mower

The self-propulsion feature is a fantastic way to make mowing your lawn less of a chore. The EGO Self-Propelled mower provides variable speed propulsion ranging from 1.3 MPH to 3.1 miles per hour. This is a huge help on hills and is a great way to make the work on flat laws go faster.

Pros

  • Solid tool for a competitive price. The features and build of a more expensive mower for a mid-tier price
  • Handle-mounted controls and lights make maneuvering the mower comfortable and easy
  • LED headlight helps improve visibility
  • Ability to fold for compact storage

Cons

  • The self-propel feature while helpful, decreases the runtime drastically if used on the highest setting
  • Extra batteries are expensive compared to other brands

FAQ

Can EGO mowers cut wet grass?

On their website, EGO answers this question stating, “In theory, there’s no safety issue from a battery-operated EGO lawn mower but there are a few reasons why you should avoid using it while the grass is wet.” The reasons range from lawn or mower damage to a very low risk of electrocution, so we suggest you don’t mow wet grass and instead wait for your lawn to try.

How many years will an EGO battery last?

On their website, EGO confirms, “Due to their high capacity, all EGO batteries can be stored unattended for a minimum of 10 years without damaging capacity and cycle performance.” In addition, EGO offers up to a 3-year battery warranty when registered within 30 days of purchase.

Are EGO and Ryobi the same?

EGO and Ryobi are not the same and are owned and produced by different companies. Ryobi is owned by Techtronic Industries, which also owns Milwaukee tools, while EGO is owned by Chervon which owns other popular tool brands like FLEX and Skil/Skilsaw. It’s an easy mistake to make, though, since the brands have a similar green and black color scheme,

What other reviewers and experts have to say

The EGO mower has extremely positive reviews, earning it a 4.6/5 star rating on Amazon with over 1,500 ratings. Many mention that the mower cuts well and is high quality, and they enjoy the ability to choose between the mulching, bagging or expelling options.

Experts also give very positive feedback when it comes to the EGO mower. Jeremy Yamaguchi, the CEO of Lawn Love says, “This is a great lawn mower. EGO has the top-rated battery platform due to its battery’s durability and performance. ARC Li-ion batteries have a shock-resistant design, and they rarely overheat.” He continues, “The mower’s 56-volt ARC Li-ion battery combines with a high-efficiency brushless motor to give it 6 foot-pounds of cutting torque. It’s the ideal mower for carbon-conscious homeowners with flat lawns up to one-half acre, and it’s one of the best lawn mowers at its price point.”

EGO Self-Propelled Mower vs. Ryobi 40V Mower

After trying both the EGO Self-Propelled mower and the Ryobi 40V mower, I don’t think there’s much of a competition. In all categories other than price, I believe the EGO is superior for those with a mid-sized lawn. The EGO has a superior motor (56V vs. 40V HP) which allows for more power when cutting your lawn. That paired with its upgraded 7.5Ah battery compared to Ryobi’s 5.0Ah means you’re spending less time charging, as well as fewer stops to re-charge your battery. EGO’s additional features, including its ability to fold for compact storage and powerful LED lights, are bonuses for this highly efficient unit.

If you have a smaller yard or budget, the Ryobi mower still has features that could make it an option. In fact, Ryobi made our list of the best mowers for small yards. If you’re looking for a mower with more power, a longer battery life and better ease of use, the EGO is well worth the extra money.

Final Verdict

Overall, I believe this mower is one of the best options available at this price point. It checks all the boxes to make mowing the lawn easier and less of a chore. Not only is the EGO Mower priced competitively in the market, but it includes more features and abilities than other mowers. Since trying, I’ve decided I’m no longer willing to live without those bonus features. The multiple cutting and disposal options of this mower, along with its ease of use and added LED visibility, I don’t know what this mower can’t do. I’ve tested multiple electric mowers, and this is at the top of my list. My final verdict? I love it.

Where to Buy the EGO Self-Propelled Mower

We Tried It

EGO POWER+ 21

EGO's 21-inch 56-volt cordless lawn mower is a powerful and easy-to-use mower that's perfectly suited for medium-sized lawns.

The EGO Self-Propelled mower is available online at Lowe’s and Amazon. At Lowes, the mower is available without the battery and charger for $499, or for $699 with the battery and the charger. If you don’t have an EGO-compatible battery for other tools, it is a much better deal to buy the combination deal, since the 7.5Ah battery separately is sold for $399.

At Amazon, the mower is only sold as a package deal with the mower, battery, and charger. It is usually listed for $649, though we have seen the price drop to $549 a few times a year. If you don’t need a mower immediately, waiting for a sale could get you a killer deal.

When Should You Let Your Child Mow the Lawn? https://www.familyhandyman.com/article/kids-lawn-mower/ Wed, 27 Mar 2024 13:03:25 +0000 https://www.familyhandyman.com/?p=546863 Many factors come into play when making this decision. As with any right of passage, the child's safety is the number one concern.

The post When Should You Let Your Child Mow the Lawn? appeared first on Family Handyman.

]]>
For generations, mowing lawns was a kid’s first major responsibility. Lawn mowing is good exercise, teaches responsibility and lets kids earn some money.

At the same time, children shouldn’t be rushed into this chore. Using a lawn mower requires good judgment, along with the physical size and strength to operate the machinery safely. If things go wrong, the results can be tragic.

Nationwide Children’s Hospital reports that every year, almost 8,500 children arrive in emergency rooms with lawn mower-related injuries. According to the Amputee Coalition, lawn mower accidents are the leading cause of major limb loss in children under 10 years of age.

Parents wondering if it’s appropriate for their child to mow the lawn should consider the child’s age, maturity, and the physical challenges of the specific mower and your property.

What Age is Appropriate for Lawn Mowing?

Many hospitals and organizations recommend parents follow the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) guidelines: Children should be at least 12 years old to operate a push mower, and 16 to operate a riding mower.

Further, children under 12 should be kept away from running lawn mowers completely. That means no riding on the back bumper, or on a parent’s lap.

But age is only part of the picture. Lawn care expert Bryan Clayton notes it also takes appropriate maturity to operate a mower safely. “A child ready to mow the lawn should be willing to learn and follow instructions closely,” he says.

Clayton began mowing at an early age, eventually transitioning those skills into a successful landscaping business before co-founding GreenPal. Clayton cautions against assuming a child is ready for mowing simply because they’re physically capable.

“It’s not just about turning the mower on and pushing,” he says. “They need to understand the pattern in which to mow, how to handle the mower on slopes, where to walk, and how to respect the machine’s power.”

As a parent, ask yourself if your child is good at following directions and respecting safety precautions. If they can’t handle small tasks responsibly, they likely can’t operate a lawn mower safely.

If your child possesses the maturity to handle a mower, the next step is checking if they’re physically capable of safely operating a specific model.

When Can Kids Use Push Mowers?

Before letting your child operate a push mower, carefully consider these factors:

Height

For most users, the mower handle should fall between the waist and chest. Unfortunately, there’s no single height requirement, because different mowers feature different handle lengths and angles. The real question is whether your child is the right height for your specific mower.

To find out, let your child push the mower around the yard while it isn’t running. Watch to see if the front or rear wheels consistently come off the ground.

If the handle is too high, they’ll apply upward force as they push, or pull down attempting to bring the handle to a more appropriate height. Either motion will raise the front or back wheels off the ground, creating an uneven mow and unsafe conditions.

Strength

A heavy mower can be difficult to maneuver. Gas-powered mowers are typically heavier than electric models, while battery-powered mowers are heavier than plug-in models.

Self-propelled mowers have some pros and cons. They can make it easier to work with heavy mowers and uneven terrain, but not all come with adjustable speeds. If your child has to sprint to keep up with the mower, a different mower that can match its assist to the user’s walking speed would be a better, safer option.

When Can Kids Use Riding Mowers?

AAP guidelines suggest treating a riding mower like a car. Hence, the age 16 guideline. The child also needs legs long enough to work the brakes and enough weight to activate the safety seat. (Typically, riding mowers will cut off if the rider leaves the seat. As a scrawny teenager, I used to trigger that cut-off when bouncing over bumpy terrain.) Common sense and maturity factor in as well.

Some parents assume that a child responsible enough to handle motorsports can handle a riding mower. But mowers aren’t ATVs. Make sure your child doesn’t ride the mower like it’s on a dirt racetrack.

Other Ways Children Can Help With Lawn Work

Iesha Mulla, founder of Parental Questions, says introducing kids to lawn care at an early age allows parents to track their ability to handle the responsibility of more complex tasks.

Raking leaves or trimming bushes may seem simple. But as Mulla says, “This will give you an idea of their awareness of safety protocols in relation to moving machinery and sharp blades.”

Beginner tasks include:

  • Collecting yard waste:A low-key way to start kids off in gardening and lawn care.
  • Planting:Introduces kids to tools like trowels and spades. Then observe how they handle delicate tasks.
  • Using a manual reel mower: Introduces children to mowing with far less risk of injury.
  • Using a string trimmer:This introductory power tool is a low-risk way to see if your child can safely and responsibly carry out the task.

As a child demonstrates responsibility and aptitude, reward them with more freedom and more powerful tools. Eventually they’ll be mowing, but the exact pace is up to you as the parent.

“Every child develops differently,” says Mulla. “Trust your judgment!”

Husqvarna Ts 242xd Riding Lawn MowerTYLER O'ROURKE FOR FAMILY HANDYMAN

Best Overall Lawn Mower

Husqvarna TS 242XD

Pros:

  • Durable and powerful Kawasaki motor
  • 42-inch cutting deck
  • Easy to turn in tight spaces
  • Can cut a lot of grass and overgrowth
  • LED lights
  • Comfortable seat
  • Great customer service

Cons:

  • Premium price point

The Husqvarna TS 242XD is a riding mower with a massive cutting deck that provides a powerful, comfortable cut in your backyard. We got our hands on the Husqvarna TS 242XD for a test ride that blew our minds.

Tyler O’Rourke tested this mower and said that “what used to be a 2-3-hour mow was done in a mere 30 minutes”. That type of power is the result of Husqvarna putting in a 21.5 horsepower Kawasaki engine that absolutely shreds grass and other lawn debris. This engine also powers the TS 242XD to mow up to 5.5 miles per hour, which is pretty fast for a lawn tractor.

The 42-inch cutting deck on this lawn tractor is on the high end of cutting widths for a riding mower and as large as many popular zero-turn mowers. The 42-inch cutting deck allows you to make fewer passes in your yard and efficiently cut your grass in less time.

A few bells and whistles were put into this mower by the thoughtful crew at Husqvarna. Small upgrades like a padded seat make long mowing sessions a much more comfortable experience. The LED headlights also allow you to stay out a bit later and safely finish up the job at the end of a long summer day.

You can grab yours from Tractor Supply for $3700 or Amazon for $3990.

Power source: Gasoline | Weight: 567 lbs. | Dimensions: 42 x 70 x 51 in. | Cutting width: 42 in. | Lawn capacity: 1-2 acres | Engine displacement: 726 cc

Why You Need a Mulching Lawn Mower https://www.familyhandyman.com/article/what-is-a-lawn-mower-mulcher/ Tue, 26 Mar 2024 23:58:40 +0000 https://www.familyhandyman.com/?p=524162 Mulching lawn mowers mash up clippings into small particles that nourish your grass. They're great for the lawn and the environment.

The post Why You Need a Mulching Lawn Mower appeared first on Family Handyman.

]]>
Mowing a lawn is enough of a chore without going back and raking up the clippings. But if you don’t do it, that bed of clippings might suffocate the grass.

You could collect the clippings in a bag, dump them in a pile, add in other organic material and turn it into useful compost. Or you could pulverize the clippings into particles small enough to safely leave on the lawn. That’s exactly what a mulching lawn mower does.

Mulching lawn mowers come in all power options, including gas and electric (corded or cordless). Some you ride, and some you push. If you like your current lawn mower, there may be a kit that lets you convert it to a mulching model. No matter which kind you choose, you’ll have greener grass, because the mulch adds nutrients to the soil.

How Does a Mulching Mower Work?

Mulching mowers feature rotary blades that spin on a horizontal plane. But instead of the straight blades, like a conventional rotary lawnmower, these are shaped to direct clippings toward the underside of the deck and cut them several more times before falling back on the lawn. Some mulching blades are curved, some serrated, and some are both.

A mulching mower has no side or back outlet. This allows clippings to swirl around under the mower deck. When you buy a conversion kit, it typically includes a cover for the discharge opening. The mower won’t mulch properly without it.

How To Use a Mulching Mower

If you’re not careful, some of that swirling grass under the deck of a mulching mower may band together into clumps, which the grass can’t absorb. Here’s how to prevent this:

  • Mow the grass only when it’s dry. Wait for the morning dew to dissipate. If you’re planning to water, do it after you mow.
  • Mow the grass often. This prevents oversized clippings from creating a layer of thatch.
  • Mow more slowly than you would with a regular mower to give the blades times to mulch.
  • Clean the blades and the underside of the deck before and after mowing.
  • Sharpen the blades frequently to maintain cutting power.
  • Weed the lawn before mulching. If you mulch weeds, you just spread the seeds. If the lawn has lots of weeds, bag the clippings until you can reduce the weed population.

To keep the grass healthy, set the mower height so that it cuts no more than one-third of the length of each blade. The grass should generally be about 1/2-in. longer than it would be if you were collecting the clippings. This keeps the roots healthy and hides the pulverized clippings that fall back onto the lawn.

Is Mulching Good for Your Grass?

Yes. And it’s also good for the environment.

  • Clippings provide nutrients the grass needs, including nitrogen, potassium and phosphorous. Because the clippings are ground into small particles, they decompose quickly, making the nutrients readily available.
  • Waste products from the microorganisms responsible for decomposition combine with the soil to produce carbon-rich humus. This helps the soil retain moisture. A cover of fresh clippings aids that process.
  • According to the Environmental Protection Agency, yard trimmings account for more than 12 percent of municipal solid waste. So every bag of clippings used as mulch takes some strain off your local landfill.

Top Mulching Lawn Mowers

If you’re looking for a push mower, you can choose a corded, cordless or gas model. Or you could opt for a gas-powered riding mower. Here are some awesome mid-range choices. Once you’ve finalised your pick, don’t forget about getting a lawn mower cover, too.

Best Corded

Greenworks 12 Amp 20' Corded Lawn Mower

The GreenWorks 12-Amp Corded Lawn Mower offers back or side discharge as well as mulch mode. There are no emissions and no batteries to charge.

Best Cordless

Worx Wg743 40v Power Share 4.0ah 17' Cordless Lawn Mower

The Worx 40V Power Share comes with a battery charger and two 20V batteries that provide enough power to mulch 1/8-acre on a single charge. The batteries can be used with any other Worx tools.

Best Gas

Craftsman M105 140cc 21 Inch 3 In 1 Gas Powered Push Lawn Mower With Bagger

The Craftsman Gas Powered Push Lawn Mower is a standard pull-start mower with auto-choke, which means you simply pull the cord and go. Like the GreenWorks, it offers back and side discharge plus mulching options. It features six height settings and a 21-inch cutting deck.

Best Riding

Husqvarna 42' 18.5 Hp Hydrostatic Riding Mower

The Husqvarna Riding Mower offers an 18.5-horsepower gas engine and a top speed of 7.4 mph, making it one of the faster riding mowers on the market. Air induction prevents grass from flattening under the blade. The mulching kit and clipping bag are sold separately.

John Deere Just Debuted an All-Electric Riding Lawn Mower https://www.familyhandyman.com/article/john-deere-z370r-electric-riding-lawn-mower/ Tue, 26 Mar 2024 23:38:24 +0000 https://www.familyhandyman.com/?p=514305 Looking for a new riding lawn mower? John Deere has just released the Z370R, a zero-turn electric riding lawn mower. Learn about it here.

The post John Deere Just Debuted an All-Electric Riding Lawn Mower appeared first on Family Handyman.

When it comes to buying a lawn mower, there’s a growing trend of electric replacing traditional gas-powered models. Electric lawn mowers have a number of advantages over gas: less noise, easier maintenance, no exhaust smell and of course more eco-friendly. Several mower manufacturers have released electric machines of both the push and riding style, and John Deere is now adding its name to that list. Currently, the John Deere Z370R Electric ZTrak is available for pre-order. Here’s what you need to know about this machine.

What’s John Deere’s New All-Electric Lawn Mower?

John Deere Ztrak 370r First electric Mower with Woman mowing the lawn

The John Deere Z370R is a zero-turn electric riding lawn mower. That means it’s fully battery-powered and doesn’t need any gas or oil. Like all electric machines, the lack of combustible fuel also eliminates the need to winterizeapart from parking the mower in a sheltered space and bringing the batteries indoors. Plus, one of the benefits of an electric vs. gas lawnmower it that it’s quieter than its gas-fueled counterparts, so you’re less likely to disturb the neighbors during your morning lawncare routine.

It’s zero-turn functionality means it turns as sharply around corners and tight spaces, thanks to front wheels that rotate 360 degrees.

The Z370R charges with a regular extension cord plugged into a 110-volt outlet, so there’s no need to remove batteries or store a charger. The 3.56 kWH battery capacity, 42-inch mower deck and 2-acre maximum mow per charge are fairly average among other reputable electric mower brands. What isn’t average is the battery’s 5-year warranty, or the waterproof casing built over it to allow stress-free hose washes.

Like other John Deere mowers, this machine comes with MulchControl technology, which allows you to switch between normal mowing and mulching easily on the fly.

When Will It Be Available?

According to John Deere’s website, if you pre-order the Z370R today you can expect it to arrive at your local dealer for pickup within 7 to 10 months.

Where Can I Get It?

The Z370R is currently available for pre-order on the John Deere website. At $6,400, this mower is at the more expensive end of the electric mower spectrum. Time will tell if the robust design and claims of cleaner, faster cuts justify the cost.

Can You Leave Snow on the Deck? The Answer, According to Experts https://www.familyhandyman.com/article/can-you-leave-snow-on-deck/ Tue, 26 Mar 2024 02:43:40 +0000 Here's why you should remove snow from your deck, along with some tools and products to do it.

The post Can You Leave Snow on the Deck? The Answer, According to Experts appeared first on Family Handyman.

]]>
Before we get to the topic at hand, permit me a personal admission: I don’t leave snow on any walking or driving surface, at least not for long. I’m the guy in the neighborhood with the extra wide shovel, clearing the sidewalk at my end of the block before dawn so early walkers don’t pack down the snow.

After one late spring snowstorm, I wanted to burn off the gas in my snow blower so it wouldn’t go stale over the summer. I blew my walk and drive, then that of one neighbor, then another, on and on around the corner. When my blower finally ran out of gas, a neighbor thanked me and added, “Are you running for office?”

Decks are the one exception to my snow-clearing sensibilities. They’re increasingly built with composite materials that are low maintenance. Why add to your shoveling duties by clearing the deck? Composite boards can take whatever winter dishes out, right?

Let’s find out.

Is It Okay to Leave Snow on a Deck?

Of course, you can leave snow on your deck. But should you? No, says Vince Christofora, an engineer and owner of Woodstock Hardware in Woodstock, New York.

Here are three reasons why you should remove at least some snow from your deck.

Why You Should Remove Snow From Your Deck

Weight damage

“Decks, like roofs, should be designed to handle snow loads for the areas in which they are built,” says Christofora. “Footings and the structure of the deck should be sized accordingly. If you let snow pile up on your deck and have an undersized or not well-designed deck, you should be concerned about the weight, just as you would be with a roof.”

Consider the math. Christofora says concrete weighs 150 pounds per cubic foot; dirt and gravel 110 pounds; and snow 15 to 20 pounds. “It’s not necessarily fluffy stuff, especially when it builds up,” he says. “Removing snow even after a lighter storm helps, and allows you to be ready in case there is an unexpected mega-storm.”

Damage to deck boards

Water in any form that covers deck boards is never good over time.

“Leaving snow on the deck can shorten the life of your deck coating because there’s water sitting on it non-stop,” Christofora says. “One of the best things you can do is make sure your deck has a good coat of stain, paint or sealant on it before the winter season arrives.”

Christofora says he still sees a lot of wood decks in the Northeast. “We don’t see as many pressure-treated decks as we do cedar, mahogany and exotic woods, which are expensive,” he says.

“The general consensus is maintenance-free is not really maintenance-free. They get dirty and moldy, and you need to clean them like a regular deck. Now they make stains and waterproofers that you can use on composite wood decks.”

Safety in an emergency

A deck clear of snow may save a life in an emergency.

“You don’t know when a rescue squad might need to come up the deck stairs with a stretcher to get somebody who’s hurt out of the house,” says Christofora. “What if there’s a fire? It’s dangerous getting out of the house when the deck is covered with snow or slippery because of the snow.”

How to Remove Snow from a Deck

When removing snow and ice, Christofora suggests following the same guidelines whether it’s wood or composite. Tools or products to use include:

Plastic shovel

“To avoid damaging scratching, gouging, etc., a wood/composite deck, use a plastic snow shovel, not a metal one, and make sure the plastic shovel does not have a metal edge,” Christofora says. Shovel parallel to the boards, and leave a thin layer of snow so you don’t damage the surface.

To provide traction without melting the ice, use sand or a non-toxic product like Ecotraction. “There are non-slip tape/treads you can use for traction, but they may freeze up and become slippery in winter weather conditions,” he says.

Electric snow thrower or small snow blower

These are light enough for low decks. Be careful not to damage the surface.

Ice melter

Avoid rock salt or calcium chloride, Christofora says. Choose an effective, more environmentally friendly ice melt blend like SafeStep 6300 magnesium and potassium chloride.

“Whatever you use, to avoid damaging the deck surface, sweep off the product after the product has done its job, within a day or so,” Christofora says.

Ice Chopper

“In extreme conditions, if you are going to use a metal ice chopper, be careful not to damage the deck,” says Christofora. “Chopping can get out of hand.”

Fhm We Tried It Husqvarna Ts 242xd Riding Lawn Mower

Lawn care enthusiasts and gardening experts know Husqvarna is one of the best companies for chainsaws, robotic mowers and gas leaf blowers. But how does its riding lawn mower stack up to the competition?

To answer that question, we reached out to longtime homeowner and riding mower expert Tyler O’Rourke, who’s used everything from the classic John Deere to zero-turn mowers for work and his personal lawn. He says the Husqvarna TS 242XD is a beast that “obliterated” the typical mow on his half-acre property. “What used to be a two- to three-hour mow was done in a mere 30 minutes,” O’Rourke says. “Beyond that, it’s just fun to drive.”

In addition to breaking down O’Rourke’s experience with the Husqvarna TS 242XD riding mower, we had other gardening experts weigh in on the model. Spoiler alert: They loved it, too.

What is the Husqvarna TS 242XD?

The Husqvarna TS 242XD is a riding mower made by the gardening equipment company Husqvarna (which started as a weapons manufacturer in the 1600s, but in recent years has been known for its lawn mowers and other gardening equipment). It boasts all-day comfort with a vinyl seat that O’Rourke says lives up to Husqvarna’s promise.

“Once it’s in the right spot for your height, it’s a thing of beauty,” he says. “The padding is great for those long mowing sessions.” And it’s not just O’Rourke who’s benefiting from this mower. “I’ve kept right on mowing next door to save them the push or the wait for the landscaper to arrive,” he says.

We Tried It

Husqvarna TS 242XD Lawn Tractor

This 42-inch, gas-powered riding mower cuts down the competition.

Husqvarna TS 242XD Features

Husqvarna Ts 242xd Riding Lawn Mower

Here are a few things that help the Husqvarna TS 242XD stand above the competition.

Kawasaki Motor

The Husqvarna TS 242XD has a 21.5 horsepower Kawasaki motor that has handled everything O’Rourke has thrown at it. “It’s like the Hulk of lawn mowers,” he says. “I’ve thrown a few sticks, pinecones and even taken on some dirt mounds when I was mowing (OK, mowing a bit too low). The results? Flawless. It devoured everything without breaking a sweat.”

Kawasaki motors are the best for riding mowers because they’re durable and powerful, according to gardener and Plant Bible founder, Zahid Adnan. “This engine provides ample power for mowing through even challenging terrains with ease,” Adnan says.

If you have a need for speed, O’Rourke adds that this riding mower can be fast and furious when needed. “In all seriousness, the Husqvarna TS 242XD would even make Dominic Toretto proud. It’s fastlike really fast. It’s a real speed demon in the world of lawn mowers.” Husqvarna says the maximum speed of this riding lawn mower is 5.5 miles per hour.

Are you looking for power? O’Rourke was able to drag a small truck with rocks and mulch up a hill using the Husqvarna riding mower. “Raw power,” he says. “This thing is a beast.”

Cutting Deck

A 42-inch cutting deck means you can tackle a large lawn in fewer passes. “With a wide deck like this, you’ll be done with your mowing tasks in no time, giving you more time to relax and enjoy your well-maintained lawn,” O’Rourke says.

He adds that the adjustable deck is good for short and long grass, but notes it does best on flat terrain. “It’s almost as if gravity pulls it further into the ground on the lower side, resulting in an uneven cut with a bit of a lower edge rather than a parallel cut to the angle of the hill,” O’Rourke says.

Comfortable Seat

There’s nothing worse than an uncomfortable riding mower, especially since the whole point of it is to make mowing your lawn more comfortable. “Luckily, the Husqvarna TS 242XD’s extra-thick cushions are so comfortable you could sit for hours,” O’Rourke says. “The padding is great for those long mowing sessions.” One con, he notes, is that the seat isn’t ventilated, so there will be some sweat on hotter days.

Adnan was also a big fan of the seat. “Husqvarna has paid attention to user comfort with a comfortable high-back seat and intuitive controls,” he says. “This makes long mowing sessions less fatiguing.”

LED Lights

Nighttime mows are nobody’s favorite, but they happen from time to time. The Husqvarna TS 242XD’s light-emitting diode (LED) lights make those post-sunset chores a little easier and safer. “They’re a game-changer in the dark, but not so much during twilight,” O’Rourke says.

How We Tested It

O’Rourke put the Husqvarna TS 242XD riding lawn mower to the test. In addition to testing and researching just about every riding mower there is, O’Rourke also has a half-acre property that includes crabgrass, Bermuda grass and some hills to create the perfect test course for a riding mower. O’Rourke says his typical lawn care duties previously took him two to three hours, but with the Husqvarna TS 242XD he’s done in about 30 minutes.

Turning Radius

Although it’s not quite a zero-turn riding mower, O’Rourke says the Husqvarna TS 242XD can get in the crooks and crannies of most yards with ease. “It’s quick in a three-point turn when needed and handles garden edges with ease,” he says. “The brush guard is a helpful buffer to get up close and personal with larger trees or bushes, allowing you to get the deck as close as possible without any unintended tree consumption.”

He adds that you should slow down when trying to make turns. “Turning at full speed can be a bit too much for your lawn to handle,” he says. “It can potentially tear up your grass a bit. I learned this lesson the hard way during one late dusk mow right before dark. Luckily, there was no lasting damage, but it’s worth keeping in mind.”

Customer Service

Husqvarna is known for high-quality customer service, and O’Rourke’s experience with it regarding his riding mower was no different. The company told him the mower was going to arrive later than expected due to a manufacturing defect. “This level of customer care stood out, and it’s a testament to Husqvarna’s commitment to making things right when they go wrong,” O’Rourke says.

Replacement Parts

Husqvarna Ts 242xd Riding Lawn Mower

O’Rourke had an unexpected hiccup hours after starting the Husqvarna when his belt gave out. He notes that the Husqvarna TS 242XD’s manual gave few instructions on how to replace it, and that he had to find a DIY video on YouTube to guide him through the process.

He also says you may have to do trial-and-error when looking for non-Husqvarna accessories, such as a clippings collector/bag. “[The connector chute] has square edges, which means no easy fit with most attachments at retail stores,” O’Rourke says. “I even matched the serial number at Lowe’s to the one that supposedly fit the model on the Husqvarna website, and still, no dice.”

Husqvarna sells its own accessories on its website and lets you know which ones fit which models, so you don’t have to hunt for the optimal lawn mower cover.

Delivery

Husqvarna Ts 242xd Riding Lawn Mower

O’Rourke and other customer reviewers were thrilled with the delivery process. “The Husqvarna TS 242 was hand-delivered and rolled off a U-Haul trailer,” he says. “This isn’t your typical drop-it-on-your-doorstep scenario.”

In other words, this Husqvarna riding mower arrives pre-assembled. All you have to do is fill her up and start mowing.

Pros

  • Durable and powerful Kawasaki motor
  • 42-inch cutting deck
  • Easy to turn in tight spaces
  • Can cut a lot of grass and overgrowth
  • LED lights
  • Comfortable seat
  • Great customer service

Cons

  • Expensive

What Other Experts Had to Say

We reached out to other lawn care and gardening experts who have used the Husqvarna TS 242XD, and every one of them had only positive things to say about it. Survivalist Mike Millerson uses it for his homestead property.

“The machine certainly delivers on functionality and durability whenever I’ve needed it,” Millerson says. “In my past experiences with similar mowers, like the Cub Cadet XT1 Enduro Series LT, the Husqvarna TS 242XD holds its ground in power and usability while improving significantly in terms of cutting precision and overall control.”

It has mostly positive reviews among customers, as well. Although it only has four Amazon reviews, three out of the four are five-star ratings.

Product Comparison: Husqvarna TS 242XD vs. Cub Cadet XT2 LX42

The Husqvarna TS 242XD and Cub Cadet XT2 LX42 riding mowers are very similarboth have 42-inch cutting decks, engines with at least 20 horsepower, LED headlights, adjustable seats, attachment capability and easy steering. Both are also similarly priced (Husqvarna is about $400 more expensive), so there’s not much separating between the two.

Other lawn care experts and reviewers seem to think the Cub Cadet riding mower is better for thicker grass, though some of the gardeners we spoke to said the Husqvarna can tackle any grass length or thickness, too. “This mower is a worthy investment for any serious lawn care enthusiasts,” Lindsey Hyland, a gardener and Urban Organic Yield founder, says of the Husqvarna mower.

Final Verdict

As home renovators and hobby builders, we at Family Handyman know a thing or two about chainsawsjust read our chainsaw buying guide. From cordless to pole saws, we thought we’d seen it all. That is until we heard about the trending Saker mini chainsaw.

What is the Saker mini chainsaw?

The Saker mini chainsaw may look cute at only four inches long, but it’s more than capable of eliminating pesky branches and shaggy shrubs. A pure copper motor offers 550 watts of horsepower. Plus, the high-quality guide chain comes quenched for added durability. Quenching is a process where steel is heated above its recrystallization temperature and then rapidly cooled, creating a harder metal. Because this makes the chain wear-resistant, users don’t have to use chain saw sharpeners as frequently.

Safety Features at Your Fingertips

Ample safety features come baked in. On the handle is a safety lock to prevent accidental injury and vents that minimize the risk of overheating. An attachable bezel prevents sawdust from splashing back at the operator. Just like regular chainsaws and pole saws, it’s best to oil the chain prior to use for the best performance.

Compact and Convenient

DIYers adore the tiny size and compact carrying case that stows away in the corner of a garage, on a shelf or inside a cabinet. Those who use it comment on the powerful torque and lightweight constructionjust check out this TikTok from @the_daily_diy, who used the chainsaw to cut the overgrown branches in her yard in under five minutes.

@the_daily_diy

It’s tiny but mighty, love this mini chainsaw #thedailydiy #diy #doityourself #diyproject #homemaintenance #saker #minichainsaw

Vibes – ZHRMusic

How does it assemble?

Assembling the Saker mini chainsaw is simple and takes under a minute. Use the included screwdriver to screw in the beveled guide plate and chain, ensuring that the chain isn’t loose enough to slip off the track during use. Then, use a small amount of the included chainsaw oil to lubricate the chain as you would for other cordless chainsaws. After that, the unit is ready to start slicing.

FAQ

How long does it take to charge Saker mini chainsaw?

Because it’s a cordless tool, each mini chainsaw comes with a fast-charging cord that fully charges the unit in about two hours. The included 20V 1500mAh rechargeable lithium battery lasts long enough to complete most moderately sized jobs. Even with heavy use, the battery has enough juice for about 40-50 minutes of continuous runtime.

What can a mini chainsaw cut through?

Mini chainsaws, like the Saker mini chainsaw, are cool power tools that tackle bigger jobs than you’d expect given the compact size. That said, mini chainsaws typically perform best with branches or logs under four inches in diameter.

Are mini chainsaws worth buying?

Mini chainsaws are remarkably powerful given their tiny size. That said, they don’t usually offer the same bells and whistles as their larger counterparts. Those hoping to utilize saw mill attachments or other upgrades may choose to opt for a regular-sized chainsaw. DIYers who just need to get rid of stray branches benefit from mini chainsaw features. The smaller size and lighter weight simplify overhead jobs and minimize accidents.

What Reviewers Say

Reviewers call the Saker mini chainsaw “very light.” Several folks comment on its surprising power and how cool the motor stays during use. Verified purchaser Daniel T. writes, “I may sound jaded and cynical, but it’s only because I’m jaded and cynical…When I first saw the ads for this mini electric chainsaw, I thought ‘Yeah, right.. probably junk!’ But it is quite the opposite…this review is after days of hard use and some abuse. I literally acid-tested this thing, as you will note that in the pics, it is a bit dirty and the word “Chainsaw” is nearly worn off the bar.

Described as a pruning tool, I am sure I’ve pushed this thing well beyond its intended use, cutting small, green locust trees, vines and large branches. The batteries will last about 45-50 minutes under heavy load, easily recharged with the included charger. And it’s very light and easy to use one-handed. It does not have a lubricator for the bar but comes with a small bottle of oil to manually oil the chain and bar. I used regular 30W bar oil, which works fine.

It is perfect for hard-to-reach trimming and cutting, and much safer than a gas or heavy electric saw if you are on a ladder or reaching overhead to cut. I am very impressed by this little saw and totally recommend it. If you use it as hard as I have, you will dull the chain, but it can be easily sharpened or replaced as replacement bars and chains are available. If it was gonna break, I woulda broke it. ‘Nuff said!”

Where can I buy it?

Riding Lawn Mower Maintenance and Repair Guide https://www.familyhandyman.com/article/riding-lawn-mower-repair/ Mon, 25 Mar 2024 23:19:36 +0000 Tired of feeling helpless when your riding lawn mower breaks down? Learn how to do your own riding lawn mower repair and maintenance.

When I was 12, I accidentally drove my dad’s riding lawn mower over a garden hose. There was a sickening change in the engine noise, and black smoke billowed from under the mower deck. I immediately shut down the machine as my dad came running.

Needless to say, he wasn’t happy. We jacked up the mower and discovered not only the ruined hose tangled around the blades, but a broken belt, too.

Luckily for me, my dad turned this into a life lesson. Within 15 minutes we freed the broken hose from the blades, and began installing a new belt Dad kept in reserve. Just like that, the mower was fixed. I finished mowing the lawn and learned something valuable: With a little knowledge and a few spare parts, I could repair the mower.

From that day forward I became interested in DIY repairs of all sorts, thrilled I no longer had to feel helpless when things broke. And neither do you. Keep reading for my best insights on riding lawn mower repair and maintenance.

How to Tune Up a Riding Lawn Mower

Follow these steps for a basic tuneup:

Clean or change air filter

Air filters allow air to flow into combustion chamber, ensuring the correct gas/air mixture while keeping out dust and debris. Over time, air filters become clogged, causing your mower to run rich and burn too much gas. If ignored, your mower won’t run at all.

So it’s important to inspect your riding mower air filter once or twice a year. If it seems clogged, replace it. Air filters are cheap and easy to find. You can also get more life from your old filter by removing and blowing it out with an air compressor and spray nozzle attachment.

Change oil or replace batteries

Like all internal combustion machines, your gas-powered riding mower needs oil to run properly. Regular oil changes are vital for keeping the engine cool and lubricated. You should change the oil after every 50 hours of use, or once every mowing season.

For electric riding mowers, battery life can degrade over time. If your electric mower features standard 12-volt lead-acid car batteries, leave it charging at all times when not in use. Use a volt-meter to check your state of charge before each mowing. If any batteries show less than 12 volts, replace them.

Be sure to buy batteries that match the ones your mower came with. With lithium-ion batteries, you may eventually notice you get less run time out of a charge. When this gets bad enough to affect your productivity, buy a new battery. Here’s how to tune up your lawn mower to keep it running smoothly.

Winterize your mower

Don’t put your gas-powered mower away for winter without running the engine dry to remove all the gas, or adding some fuel stabilizer to the tank.

For electric mowers powered by lead-acid car batteries, hook them up to a charger for the winter. For lithium-powered electric mowers, remove the batteries and store them indoors.

How to Maintain a Riding Lawn Mower

Proper maintenance steps include:

Keep belts in good shape

Raise your mower deck at the beginning of the season and every month or so afterward to inspect the various belts. Are any cracked, frayed or sagging? It may be time for a new belt. Check your owner’s manual for the specific size and type of belts your mower needs, then stock up on replacements, installing them as needed.

Check battery and terminals

For gas-powered mowers, chances are your battery terminals will eventually accumulate dirt and corrosion buildup. This could eventually prevent your machine from starting. Avoid this by inspecting the terminals before each mow and cleaning them with a wire brush if needed.

It’s also wise to check the battery charge with a volt meter several times each season. It it’s lower than 12 volts, your battery needs a good overnight charge or replacement.

Clean the mower deck

This simple job is easy to forget, but neglecting it for too long will catch up with you. Caked-on grass clippings can slow down your blades and lead to poor quality cuts.

If you notice your lawn looking more ragged than it used to after a mow, raise and inspect the mower deck with the machine turned off. Clean all clippings off the blades and the underside of the mower deck. I find a pry bar and pressure washer make a great grass-removing duo.

Store under cover

Don’t keep your mower outside all year and expect it to work well. Rain, snow and sun will lead to corrosion and other damage. Keep your mower dry in a shed or fabric storage shelter.

Common Riding Lawn Mower Problems

Like all machines, riding lawn mowers have lots of intricate parts, and lots of things that can go wrong. I’ve been using and maintaining riding mowers for more than 20 years. Here are the most common riding mower issues I’ve run up against.

Drive belt failure

All riding lawn mowers rely on a rubber or polyester cord belt that turns power from the engine into motion in the wheels. Not surprisingly, these belts occasionally wear out and break.

You’ll know when this happens because your mower suddenly won’t move, or moves with a noticeable decline in power. That’s a sign of a stretched belt.

Stretched and broken drive belts need to be replaced with a new belt of equal length and thickness. Look up the dimensions of your old belt in your owner’s manual or online.

When you’re ready to replace the belt, raise the mower deck to the maximum height and back the machine onto ramps if you have them. Remove the old belt and pop the new one into place on the pulleys.

Note: If you own a zero-turn mower, your machine probably has two smaller drive belts instead of one big one.

Engine won’t start

Most people who ask my advice have the same problem an engine that turns over but won’t start. Nine times out of 10, their mower has sat unused for months with gas in the tank. This leads to stale gas and possibly a gunked-up carburetor.

The solution: Siphon all the stale gas out of the tank and add fresh gas. After that, the mower will probably start and run fine. Moving forward, drain all gas from the tank or add fuel stabilizer before putting your mower into long-term storage. If it still doesn’t work, then it’s time to replace your mower.

Low-quality grass cutting

Is your riding mower cutting less crisply than it used to? Bad blades could be why. Steel mower blades can easily get dull or corroded to the point where they won’t do their job well anymore. Luckily, this is an easy fix.

Shut off your mower, then raise the deck and inspect the blades. If they seem dull, bent or corroded, buy a new set that matches, based on the description in the owner’s manual. Expect to pay around $20 per blade. To install, raise the mower deck, then use a socket wrench to remove the old blades and add the new. It’s wise to buy an extra set so you have spares on hand for next time.

If your old blades are only dull and otherwise undamaged, you can sharpen them. You’ll need a grinder, along with eye and hearing protection.

Do your best to sharpen the blades evenly so they remain balanced. Test the balance by hanging each blade by its central hole on a nail driven into a vertical surface. If it tips one way or the other, it needs more sharpening on one side or the other until it hangs level.

Not only does Cub Cadet offer excellent quality machines at great price points, but they also carry both electric and gas-powered mowers. Cub Cadet’s gas-powered riding mowers are powerful enough for those with large yards and fields. What is a Cub Cadet Riding Mower?

Cub Cadet is an American company that manufactures and sells outdoor power equipment, including riding mowers. Currently, there are three Cub Cadet Riding Mowers types: lawn and garden tractors, zero-turn mowers and electric riding mowers.

Zero-turn riding mowers allow users to get mowing jobs done 50% fasterand are engineered to handle a range of terrains. They can cover up to five acres, with steering wheel options that make the user experience easier.

Electric riding mowers offer the same powerful performance with zero emissions, thanks to a powerful and convenient lithium-ion battery. The absence of a gas engine makes these machines some of the quietest on the market.

How to Use a Cub Cadet Riding Mower

Cub Cadet Riding Mowers come in gas and electric versions, meaning you will either need to charge the batteries or fill the tank with gas before using it for the first time. Electric model batteries are fully charged in four hours and last up to one and a half hours or up to two acres. On average, gas-powered Cub Cadet Riding Mowers use about three gallons of gas for every 2 hours of use.

As with any new machinery, it’s essential to thoroughly read the user manual before use. To help you learn how to use your Cub Cadet riding mower, we recommend viewing the instructional videos and troubleshooting tips on the Cub Cadet website.

The Best Cub Cadet Riding Mower Reviews

Five-star reviewer Clark R. says assembly of his Cub Cadet XT1 Enduro Gas Powered Riding Lawn Mower was “straightforward and painless.”

“After checking all fluids, pins, etc, some gas and fired right up,” he writes. “What use to take over an hour with the old 30 inch cutter now takes 20 minutes with far less gas consumption.”

J. Blair is on his second Cub Cadet Riding Mower (a CC30E Electric Mini Riding Mower) and says, “Cub Cadet never has disappointed. This is my second cub cadet tractor, and I believe there isn’t a better one out there.”

When it comes to using the electric version, Maeck Dude says, “The Cub [CC30E Electric] mini is amazing. It mows like a champ, even the thick stuff. The mulcher works like a charm, and the electric motor is easy to clean and lasts over an hour. I would highly recommend it for towing stuff as well. It will not mow steep hills and tends to want to slide on a steep slope but it’s really a marvel I’m so impressed with the quality of the machine.”
