Instead of an expensive, labor-intensive formal path, save money and time with one of these casual garden paths. These walkway ideas will blend in better and will look like theyve been in your garden forever.

Mulch and Gravel Garden Paths

This windinggravel pathreflects the informality and ease ofmaintenance of the garden. Mulch and gravel are the cheapest pathway materials you can buy for rock walkways, and they make construction simple, too, making them two of our favorite walkway ideas. All you have to do is remove the sod, roll out landscape fabric and spread the mulch or gravel.

Mulch and gravel paths can be meandering, wood chipcovered trails or carefully planned designs, and they range from casual to formal depending on the design and edging material. You can choose from a wide variety of loose materials including coarse bark, decorative mulch, washed stones and crushed gravel or shells.

Mulch garden path

As stated above, the three commontypes of mulchsuitable for garden paths are wood chips, cocoa bean and cypress bark. Since these path materials are lighter than stone, theyre easier to haul and spread. Mulch is also a bit cheaper than gravel or stone pebbles. Remember, though, that organic paths decompose over time, so youll have to rejuvenate them every two to five years with new material. Also, dont use bark, wood chips or mulch for paths that run through areas with poor drainage or that are wet. Itll lead to a soggy path.

Youll find bags of mulch at home centers, but for the best selection of organic materials for a path, check your local nursery or landscape supplier. Depending on how big your path is, it may be cheaper to have bulk material delivered than to buy bags. Plan on a 3-in.-deep layer of mulch about 3 ft. wide as an alternative to grass. Call the public works department at your city hall or check with localtree trimmingservices. They often have piles of wood chips or mulch that are free for the hauling.

Gravel walkways

Several types of inexpensive landscaping gravel are available for paths. Common types are: crushed gravel, crushed limestone and pea rock. For a path thats more formal or longer lasting than a mulch path, consider washed gravel, crushed stone or crushed shells. These materials last indefinitely and only need occasional weeding to look their best. If you want to run a wheelbarrow or lawn mower along the path, choose crushed stone rather than smooth pebbles. The jagged edges of crushed stone lock together to form a firm surface. Crushed stone is also less likely to get kicked out into the yard.

Gravel for paths is sold by type and size. Smaller stones, averaging under 1/2 in., are best for paths because they offer more comfort underfoot and pack together better. Visit your local nursery or landscape supply specialist to see whats available in your area. Gravel is usually sold by the ton. Measure the length and width of the path. Take these measurements to the supplier and ask for help to figure out the quantity of gravel you need. Unless your path is very short, it usually makes sense to have the material delivered. Gravel for a path 3 in. deep and 3 ft. wide will cost about the same as mulch.

Gravel paths do have a few limitations, though. The stones can get tracked into the house, so dont use them near entries. And gravel paths are a bad choice in areas where you have to shovel snow off them. The gravel can end up in your lawn orflower beds.

Tips for making mulch and gravel garden paths

  • Rent a gas-poweredsod cuttertoremove grassif the path is long. For short paths, use a garden spade to slice off the sod.
  • Set edging so it ends up about an inch above the fill material.
  • Use a spacer stick cut to the width of the garden path as a guide when you set the edging or border. You wont have to keep pulling out the tape measure to make sure the edges run parallel.
  • Cover the soil with landscape fabric todeter weedsand prevent the fill material from mixing with the soil. Dont use plastic. Itll catch water and create a soggy path.
  • Have gravel delivered, especially if you need more than a half ton.
  • If you want a path thats firm enough to roll a wheelbarrow on, use crushed stone and tamp it after leveling it. (Pea rock or other rounded stone wont compact.) Use a hand tamper for short paths. Rent a vibrating-plate tamper for long paths.

Garden Path Borders and Edging Ideas

metal edging on a gravel path

Gravel or mulch paths require some type of edging to keep the material from spreading out onto your lawn or flower bed. You can also add a border or an edge as a design element. Here are some common types of edging you can use for walkway landscaping:

  • Plasticlandscape edgingis cheap. And its fast and easy to install. If you object to the look of the rounded top edge, hide it with a border of plants.
  • Steel or aluminum edging forms a crisp edge that gives the path a neat appearance. It costs more than plastic, though, and is less forgiving on sloped terrain. It also keeps gravel or mulch from overflowing into the yard or garden.
  • Brick, stone or paver borders are attractive and versatile, but theyre more expensive and a lot more work to install.
  • Concrete edging is less expensive than brick or stone but has the same advantages. Newer types that look like random pieces of tumbled stone are a great lower-cost alternative to a real stone border.
  • Landscape timbers are an economical alternative to stone or brick borders. Theyre especially useful for building shallow steps on gradually sloping terrain.

Stone Paths

Stepping-stonesare the fastest, easiest way to build a path, and another one of our favorite walkway ideas. Theres very little digging involved. And although the stone is heavy, a little goes a long way. Since theres distance between the stones, you dont have to worry about leveling them with one another. Stepping-stone paths also cost less because youll cover more distance with less stone. Stones that are flat and about 18 in. across and 2 in. thick are ideal. Check your local landscape supplier or quarry to see whats available. If youre building a short stepping-stone path, you can usually pick the stones you want from the pallet or pile of stones on hand at the supplier. For longer paths, ask for help to figure out the quantity and have the stone delivered. If youre lucky enough to live in an area with naturally occurring outcroppings of stone, you may find stepping-stones free for the hauling.

You can also make attractive stepping-stone paths using 12-in. square or round concrete patio blocks. These are available in a wide selection of colors and textures from home centers, landscape suppliers and masonry dealers. Search online for patio blocks to see the variety.

Stepping-Stone Path

How to build a stone path

  • Arrange stones so the distance from the center of one to the center of the next one is 20 to 24 in.
  • Set the stones in place and cut around them with a spade or rock saw. Then lift the stone and dig out the grass and a little soil.
  • Spread a 1/2- to 1-in.-thick layer of sand under the stone if you want to make leveling the stones easier. Sand is easier to work with than soil. A 60-lb. bag of sand is enough for about four to six stones.
  • Set the top of the stepping-stones about 1 in. above the soil level. This will give you a dry place to step while still allowing you to run alawn mowerover the path.

Using Ground Cover Plants with Stone Paths

Ground cover attractively fills the space around and between pieces of yard stones such as flagstone. Includingground cover plantsin your garden path makes a stone walkway easier in two ways: First, you can skip the thick, compacted gravel base underneath. That eliminates the backbreaking digging, plus the hauling and compacting of gravel. Without the solid base, the stones will shift and become uneven, but the plants will hide that. The second advantage is that you dont have to spend extra time laying the stones perfectly. The plants will hide wide gaps.

There are quite a fewperennial plantsthat can withstand foot traffic and will grow between stones. Check with your local nursery to see whats available that will grow in your area. Here are some ground cover plants that can tolerate some foot traffic: Creeping Thyme, Blue Star Creeper, Brass Buttons, Creeping Mazus and Sedum.

Why the Day After Thanksgiving Is an Annual Plumbing Crisis https://www.familyhandyman.com/article/brown-friday-plumbing-problems/ Thu, 21 Nov 2024 17:51:20 +0000 https://www.familyhandyman.com/?p=649722 Plumbing emergencies spike during the week of Thanksgiving. Here's how to prevent clogged toilets and broken disposals.

The post Why the Day After Thanksgiving Is an Annual Plumbing Crisis appeared first on Family Handyman.

]]>
It’s Thanksgiving, and the holiday season is now a dead sprint. But if you think you’re busy baking pies, cooking turkey and hunting down bargains, it’s nothing compared to what plumbers are experiencing. This is their busiest time of year, and the Friday after Thanksgiving, which has earned the name “Brown Friday,” is their Super Bowl.

What Is ‘Brown Friday’?

Brown Friday is the day after Turkey Day, but it’s really an entire week of heightened activity for plumbers. And while the name sounds like a euphemism for clogged toilets, that’s only part of the story. Houses full of guests and a day of cooking and eating put a hefty strain on your pipes, leading to clogged sinks, broken disposals and, of course, clogged toilets.

According to data compiled by Yelp, searches for “emergency plumbing” skyrocketed by 65 percent in 2023. Searches for “24-hour plumbers” were higher on Thanksgiving Day than any other day during November 2023.

Most Common Causes of Plumbing Problems On Brown Friday

Fat and grease

You should never, ever dump any kinds of fats, oils or grease down the drain because it will lead to major clogs in your pipes. That’s Plumbing 101. When warmed grease hits a cold pipe, it solidifies and sticks. Over time, the grease builds up, plugs up the works and becomes incredibly difficult to remove. Some people arent aware of this, so unclogging the resulting mess tends to be a common problem plumbers encounter the day after.

Potato peels

Thanksgiving is certainly the day for mashed potatoes, but don’t be tempted to stuff the potato peels into your garbage disposal while you’re making everyone’s favorite side dish. It’s easy to assume that the blades of a garbage disposal will shred everything to ribbons to be safely washed down the drain. But the starchy skins tend to get clumpy in your pipes, which can cause further blockages.

Though carrots aren’t quite as popular for Thanksgiving cooking as potatoes, you shouldn’t flush carrot peelings down the disposal either. Trust me on that one; I’m speaking from personal experience. Rice and pasta can also gum up your drains.

There’s a reason potato peels are one of these 15 things that you should never put down your garbage disposal, so be aware of that when you start cooking.

Another easy solution is to compost your food waste. Composting is an environmentally-friendly way to dispose of those food scraps, and its easy to do. It’s great for the garden or your flower beds. And if you don’t have a garden or flowers, you can likely find a composting service in your community that works with local farmers.

Turkey

The skin and bones from Ben Franklin’s favorite bird do not mix well with your drains and garbage disposals either. They can cause blockages.

Clogged toilets

Remember, don’t try to flush anything down the toilet other than toilet paper and the natural waste it was made for. Don’t assume your guests are wise to that, either. You can find ways to gently remind visitors that things like paper towels, hygiene products, etc., should not be flushed.

How To Prevent Plumbing Problems

The good news is that you can take a few simple preventative steps to avoid having to frantically search for an emergency plumber at 11 p.m. on Thanksgiving.

  1. Use the disposal correctly. These things are handy, but they’re not made for bones, potato peels, cornhusks, carrots, onion skins, coffee grounds, pasta, etc.
  2. Run cold water. Whenever you do use the disposal, make sure to run cold water while you feed stuff into it.
  3. Avoid using the dishwasher. If your garbage disposal is clogged, avoid using the dishwasher.
  4. Properly dispose of grease and oils. Use a container instead of pouring them down the drain, and throw them in the trash once they havesolidified.
  5. Wipe off dirty dishes and greasy pans before putting them into the dishwasher or washing them by hand in the sink.
  6. Get a mesh strainer for your showers, tubs and bathroom sinks, especially if you’re hosting guests this year. That will help catch hair before it turns into a clog.
  7. Think before you flush! Avoid flushing wipes, feminine products and other non-dissolvable products down the toilet.
  8. Have a plunger on hand. Plunging a toilet is the easiest way to unclog it. If the clog is too stubborn for a plunger, you may need to snake the toilet or dial up a plumber to take of the problem.

Account for Wood Movement

Sure, wood’s a pretty tough material all around, but it’s still highly susceptible to temperature and moisture fluctuations from the surrounding environment. This phenomenon, known as wood movement, can result in contraction and expansion across the grain. When humidity is high, wood absorbs moisture and swells. When humidity drops, wood shrinks.

The movement is gradual, but it can cause big problems in your woodworking projects, so you have to account for it in your woodworking projects. There are several ways to do that, some of them depending on the type of project and where it will sit once finished. The most important tactic for dealing with wood movement is to let it sit and acclimate in your shop. The time can vary depending on the size and thickness of the lumber and whether or not its kiln dried.

I grew up with parents who love music. Dancing was a favorite pastime in my household, and my mother still has an extensive album collection to this day. If you havent noticed, those old-school vinyl records are back in vogue. Now that they’re considered cool again, there’s been some huge growth in LP record player sales. As I looked over my moms old albums, I thought it would be cool to figure out a nice way to display them. With that goal in mind, I began to tinker around with how to make a wooden crate with a vinyl record display.

If you’ll allow me to get on my DIY soapbox: I truly believe that once you know how to make a box, you can make a million things. Lets make it a million and one with this hip and a bit retro wood record crate.

Cut the wood

For this project, I found some 5/8-inch thick walnut wood boards at the lumber yard. If you cannot find any similar boards, you may wish to run 3/4-in. boards through a thickness planner or drum sander to get to 5/8-inch, or simply construct the project using 3/4-inch thick material. Keep in mind the latter will alter some dimensions on the cutting list.

Circles are difficult to create. Whether you draw them by hand or try to achieve that perfect circle with a tool, they are not always easy, especially when it comes to wood. I tell all my clients that curves and circles always cost moretime and moneyuntil your world opens up to a router circle jig, also known as a trammel arm.

A router circle jig basically sets the center point and allows you to make a circle with whatever you put at the other end of it, sort of like a compass. A pencil, a jigsaw, a router can all work well to make a circle with a trammel arm jig. I used to dread making circles until I found out I could attach my wood router to a jig. Let me make your woodworking life easier and certainly much more pleasant by sharing the steps to making this simple woodworking jig. You may not need it often, but when you do, you will be happy to know how to make it!

An Electrician Teaches You How To Use Electrical Tape https://www.familyhandyman.com/article/electrical-tape-usage/ Mon, 21 Oct 2024 19:37:53 +0000 https://www.familyhandyman.com/?p=640527 It takes a bit of finesse, but once you get it, you get it.

The post An Electrician Teaches You How To Use Electrical Tape appeared first on Family Handyman.

]]>
One of my first jobs as an electrical apprentice was to pull wire. No, not the 12-gauge or 14-gauge non-metallic sheathed cable (NM-B, aka Romex) you see in your home, but massive, inch-thick wires used to bring power to U.S. Bank Stadium. When a wire gets this big, they don’t bother color-coding it like the black, red, white and green you buy at the store. It comes out to the job on giant reels, and it has one color: black.

Enter electrical tape. I was given a stack of brown, orange, yellow, and gray tape and told to get busy. (On a 277-volt service, the colors are different than in your home’s 120-volt service). One problem? There’s a bit of a learned technique to taping- a technique I definitely didn’t have yet. My foreman saw me awkwardly handling the tape and came over to give me a lesson.

I know it sounds ridiculous. (Who doesn’t know how to use tape?) But electrical tape differs from Scotch tape, painter’s tape and duct tape. Below, I’ll walk you through some helpful tips and tricks. You’ll be surprised at what electrical tape can do.

Uses for Electrical Tape

Here are the most common official uses (and one non-official use) for electrical tape.

  • Identification. Electrical tape is fantastic for wrapping around wires to identify them by color (called “phasing”) or for making flags to write on with a permanent marker. You can also ID your breakers and label electrical boxes.
  • Wire pulling. Wrap electrical tape around bundles of wire to organize them, then tape the head of your bundle and fish tape to effortlessly (well, sometimes) slide the wires through walls and conduit.
  • Protecting terminal screws. This is slightly controversial, but a lot of electricians (including me) were taught to wrap electrical tape around the terminal screws of receptacles and switches before shoving them into the box. The idea is to prevent shock if the device is handled while energized, but it’s not required by either the National Electrical Code (NEC) or manufacturers. (Ironically, following manufacturer labeling is required by the NEC, hence the controversy.)
  • Splice insulation. Electrical tape comes in various materials and insulation ratings to protect splices in highand medium-voltage connections (such as utility transmission lines). This usage requires extensive training to ensure the splice is secure and protected. Never use electrical tape instead of wire nuts or other connectors.
  • Connecting motor leads to feeders. Motors often run 24 hours a day in dirty, greasy environments. Electrical tape protects the electrical connections against chemicals, corrosion, temperature fluctuations and moisture. Kits are sold for this purpose nowadays, but using tape this way is a time-tested skill that many electricians learn.
  • Minor or temporary repairs. We’ve all wrapped electrical tape around small scrapes and nicks in wire insulation, but if you can see the wire itself, do not use electrical tape to fix it.
  • Keeping paint scuff-free. This is my favorite non-standard use. Using a metal torpedo level on a painted wall (to level a device or faceplate, for example) leaves marks that do not come off. Wrap the edges of your level with electrical tape to keep your paint scuff-free.

How to Use Electrical Tape

To wrap electrical tape around a cable, a bundle of wires, a pipe, a fish tape or another cylindrical object, hold the tape loosely in your dominant hand, with your thumb on top of the tape. Unstick the flap on the tape. Hold the object in your opposite hand. Stick the flap to the object, hold it down and begin your wrap.

Grip the tape between your index finger and thumb, stretching it as you pull the tape toward you and down. Don’t pull off too much tape, or the roll will flop around and get twisted. You want just enough free tape to encircle the object once. Keep pressure on the tape so that it’s taut as you stick it to the object at a slight angle.

When you get underneath and to the backside of the object, flip the roll over the top with your fingers. Grab it, pull it taut and start another wrap, overlapping by half the width of the tape as you move down the length of the object. (Play around with your technique. You might like wrapping away from you and behind the object first, for example.)

When you reach the end of your taping job, grip the tape with your thumb and finger right next to the object and give it a quick jerk. This will rip the tape roll cleanly away, leaving a short flap. Fold or twist into a “buddy flag,” which makes it easy for the next guy or gal to unwrap the tape.

A Guide to Enamel Paint and Where to Use It https://www.familyhandyman.com/article/enamel-paint/ Fri, 18 Oct 2024 14:48:10 +0000 https://www.familyhandyman.com/?p=641852 Learn all about enamel paint: its durability, best uses for home projects and tips for achieving a smooth, long-lasting finish.

The post A Guide to Enamel Paint and Where to Use It appeared first on Family Handyman.

]]>
When I moved into my first house, one of my top priorities was to paint the kitchen cabinets. The transformation was amazing, but the new paint began to chip and scratch within the first few weeks of use. Determined to find a better solution, I discovered enamel paint. This tough, glossy paint provided the durability and washability my cabinets demanded and has held up for years. It is now my go-to product for trim and doors as well.

Ahead, find all you need to know about enamel paint before using it on your next painting project, with tips from Shayne Pancione from Pancione Painting Plus and Rachel Otto from Fleury Lumber.

What Is Enamel Paint?

Enamel paint dries to an ultra-hard, glossy finish and it is typically used on surfaces that require a tough, long-lasting coat. Traditionally solvent-based (using oil or urethane), enamel paint has recently become available as a water-based product.

“Waterborne enamel has become widely available and offers several advantages,” Pancione says. “It’s easier to work with, applies smoothly, and cleans up more easily.” However, solvent-based enamels dry to a harder, more durable finish.

Is Enamel Paint Safe?

Yes, enamel paint is safe to use, but there are some safety considerations to take when using solvent-based enamels.

Oil and urethane-based products produce strong fumes that can become dangerous in a poorly ventilated space. To avoid prolonged exposure, always wear a canister mask and work in a well-ventilated room. These fumes can be flammable, so make sure to work away from any open flame source.

Water-based enamels produce fewer fumes and are a safer choice in a home with pets or children. “The tech has come so far with the water-based products that you get all the benefits of an enamel with less VOCs and flammability,” Otto says.

How Long Does Enamel Paint Take to Dry?

Enamel paints will dry to the touch between two and six hours but can take between 24 and 72 hours to fully cure. Water-based enamels will dry faster than oil and urethane-based products. “The paint needs this time to fully cure to that ultra-hard finish,” Otto says. For example, if using enamel to paint a floor, you would need to wait the full cure time before replacing furniture or introducing foot traffic to achieve the full protection of the paint.

How Much Does Enamel Paint Cost?

A gallon of enamel paint can cost between $80 to $100, “but it depends on whether it’s oil or water-based, and what its specific purpose is,” Otto says. Benjamin Moore’s Cabinet Coat enamel is less expensive than their Direct to Metal (DTM) enamel. “It really comes down to how it’s formulated and produced.”

What Should You Use Enamel Paint For?

For residential applications, enamel paint is a great choice for cabinets, trim, floors, doors and furniture. “Enamels resist wear and tear, including harsh cleaning chemicals, making them the go-to choice for high-traffic areas like doors and cabinets that need frequent cleaning,” Pancione says. Enamel paint in a spray can is also often used to refinish outdoor grills and metal surfaces, as well as outdoor furniture.

What Should You Avoid Using Enamel Paint For?

Interior walls and ceilings are not good candidates for enamel paint. The glass-like finish of enamel paint highlights any surface imperfections, which can be difficult to avoid on large wall and ceiling surfaces. Otto recommends not using enamels on anything your children will use regularly. “It takes so long to cure,” she says. “While it may seem like a good idea on, say, a swing set, there are faster-drying products you can use instead.” The ultra-glossy finish of enamels can be slippery, so are also not a good choice for stairs.

Enamel Paint Pros and Cons

Pros:

  • Highly durable
  • Washable finish
  • High gloss sheen
  • Water and stain-resistant
  • Long-lasting color

Cons:

  • Long dry and re-coat time
  • Expensive
  • High VOC levels in solvent-based products

How to Paint With Enamel Paint

  • Clean surface thoroughly
  • Remove old coatings and loose paint
  • Fill and sand any surface imperfections
  • For metal surfaces, remove any rust and prime with a rust inhibitor
  • Consider applying a primer to all surfaces
  • Ensure the work area is well-ventilated (especially with solvent-based enamel)
  • Apply enamel in two thin, even coats
  • Make sure to follow re-coat and dry times
  • Allow to fully dry and cure before use

FAQ

Which is thicker: Enamel or latex paint?

“Enamel is thicker [than latex paint], which means it’s prone to sagging or dripping on vertical surfaces if applied too heavily,” Pancione says. Stop frequently to check for drips while working.

Can you paint enamel over latex?

“You can [paint with enamel over latex], but you should always prime first,” Otto says, “especially if painting over a semi-gloss latex paint.” Scuff the surface of the old paint, then prime for best results with enamel.

How To Refinish Wood Furniture https://www.familyhandyman.com/project/how-to-refinish-wood-furniture/ Thu, 17 Oct 2024 18:28:52 +0000 https://www.familyhandyman.com/?post_type=project&p=634751 Ready to revive that worn furniture? Our guide on how to refinish wood furniture ensures beautiful, long-lasting results that you'll love.

The post How To Refinish Wood Furniture appeared first on Family Handyman.

]]>

One of the most satisfying things I have learned is how to refinish wood furniture. I cant begin to tell you how many pieces of furniture that were once someone else’s garbage have landed in my hands. With the right attention, approach and dedication, another mans garbage can become your treasure.

The hardest part about restoring a piece of wood furniture is developing the patience to see all the steps through. This is one DIY project you dont want to rush, and it is highly unlikely you will get it done in one afternoon. Restoring old furniture is hardly ever straight forward, and a technique that worked for one piece might not work for another. The trick is to know your options and then have enough knowledge to do the detective work and make an effective plan.

The steps are basic and easy. Be patient and thorough, and people will think your refinished wood furniture is new!

Assess the condition

Take a good look at your piece of wood furniture from as many angles as possible. Use painters tape to pinpoint areas that will need extra attention, such as putty build-up or deep dings that will require extra sanding to even out. It is easy to overlook areas when the dust starts flying. Then, you will need to answer some questions to determine how you go about refinishing your piece of furniture:

Is the piece made out of solid wood, laminate, or veneered plywood?

A solid wood piece of furniture is one of the most forgiving and most suitable candidates for refinishing. With veneered plywood furniture, you need to be cautious when sanding, not to sand through the wood veneer. Laminate furniture is the worst candidate for refinishing because the plastic laminate won’t take sanding, stain, or paint well.

Are the joints solid, or do they need reinforcement?

If nails or screws are loose, secure them so no further damage is done while you are refinishing it. You want to work on a solid piece and avoid having a leg fall off while you are sanding. If it requires gluing, use clamps to get a tight fit and a paintbrush or screwdriver to push it down into any deep voids.

Is there a stain under the topcoat that you may have to match?

If you have stained wood under a topcoat or sealer, you will have difficulty doing a perfect color match. Stain and sealer colors change with age, making them yellow or even deepen in tone. Therefore, it is very difficult to get an exact match. This would be the time to consider painting the furniture a solid paint color. If you choose to paint it a solid paint color, you may use all the following steps, but add a good coat of primer before proceeding with paint instead of clear sealer.

Is the current finish water-based or oil-based?

This is the most important piece of detective work you must uncover. If the finish has a yellowing appearance, it is probably an oil-based finish. Also, if a piece of wood furniture was made before the 1980s, it is even more likely to be oil-based, as water-based clear sealers didnt take off until then. The importance of this question lies in what paint, stain, or finish you plan to refinish it with. Water-based finishes can only go over water-based finishes, but oil-based finishes can cover everything.

Clean the surface

Remove all of the hardware and clean the surface using a solution made up of three parts water and one part vinegar. This will help break down grease and grime. Be sure not to use a heavily saturated wet rag; you want to wipe off the dirt and grime and not leave a lot of excess moisture on the wood. Allow it to dry well before moving on.

Most people think of a lazy Susan as a simple round circle spinning on a table. However, in my mind, the form a lazy Susan takes can truly be up to its creator. I decided to make a DIY lazy Susan and take the concept to a whole new level by making it a charcuterie board. These days, it seems like everyone is caught up in a charcuterie craze. Charcuterie boards are being served up everywhere. Restaurants, parties, events all seem to offer a combination of fruits, nuts, cheese, crackers and cured meats served on a wooden serving board. However, I have yet to see a spinning Lazy Susan Charcuterie board.

The way I approached the steps makes this project almost DIY fail-proof. First, you will see how easily the charcuterie board-style tray takes shape with the help of an acrylic router template. Then, I will share the secret to installing a Lazy Susan Mechanism, and I am certain you will be amazed at how easy it is. Get the nuts, fruit and cured meats ready while we DIY our way to presentation, presentation, presentation!

Set up the router template

Cut the wood slightly larger than the acrylic router template, which at its widest point is roughly 12-inch x 8-inch.

Place the acrylic router template on the piece of wood and position it where you like it. Use a pencil to outline the template so you have an established starting position. Secure the wood and router template to your worktable with clamps so it doesnt shift while routing.

The DR Leaf and Lawn Vacuum is as Convenient as it is Efficient https://www.familyhandyman.com/article/dr-leaf-and-lawn-vacuum-review/ Tue, 01 Oct 2024 15:24:09 +0000 https://www.familyhandyman.com/?p=637736 We tried the DR Leaf and Lawn Vacuum, and it's the fastest, most convenient way to keep your yard free from debris all season long.

The post The DR Leaf and Lawn Vacuum is as Convenient as it is Efficient appeared first on Family Handyman.

]]>
Fall has officially arrived, which means you’ll soon be dedicating hours to lawn cleanup. That is unless you happen to have one of the best leaf vacuums on hand. Of course, you could rely on your trusty old rake or leaf blower to get the job done, but a leaf vacuum can save you tons of time.

Unlike a leaf blower which blows leaves into manageable piles, a leaf vacuum sucks up leaves and other small debris from your lawn and condenses them intobags for quick and easy cleanup. Many leaf vacuums also mulch everything they suck up, making for easy disposal.

We tested almost a dozen different leaf vacuums and were especially impressed by the quick work the DR Leaf and Lawn Vacuum made of cleaning up over 30 gallons of leaves. This walk-behind machine has the ability to clean up your yard in no time, leaving you free to enjoy all that this season has to offer. We’re talking trips to the pumpkin patch, cider donuts and cool nights outside at the bonfire. Heres everything you need to know about the DR Leaf and Lawn Vacuum.

What is the DR Leaf and Lawn Vacuum?

TheDR Leaf and Lawn Vacuum is a gas-powered, walk-behind leaf vacuumsimilar to apush mower. Its powerfulsuction allows it to clean up huge piles of leaves and other backyard debris.

In spite of its bulk and weightit weighs 120 poundsthis machine is surprisingly easy to assemble. It arrives via freight delivery on a large palette. The lawn vacuum is very securely locked down within the box, with dozens of straps that have to be cut away to get the partially assembled vacuum loose. That said, our testers noted that the vacuum does come mostly put together, so assembly only consists of attaching all of the larger pieces to the main unit.

“It was tricky lifting this beast out of its box, as well as navigating it around with the giant hose continually getting in the way. But again, it was mostly just connecting the large pieces together into one full unit,” says product tester Sheri Kaz.

Another reason we’re so impressed by this machine is that its loaded with extra features, including an onboard chipper, steel impeller, easy bagging system and optional hose kit. You can even adjust the height to best suit wet or dry conditions.

we tried it

DR Leaf and Lawn Vacuum

This self-propelled, gas-powered machine has a serrated all-steel impeller and on-board chipper to handle large fall cleanups.

DR Leaf and Lawn Vacuum Features

EZ Bagger Leaf Collection System

Rather than having to attach, empty and re-attach a reusable bag every time you fire this bad boy up, the DR Leaf and Lawn vacuum uses standard leaf bags that can be deposited at the curb or in the compost pile. The platform holds the bag, and the support ring provides a crimp bar for quick installation. Plus, the latch keeps it secure. Just be sure to read the instruction manual carefully.

“At first, we were confused about how to secure the bag in place, then Annamarie figured out that you secure the bag from underneath,” says product tester Dylan Fischer.

This leaf vacuum also includes a leaf bag caddie that is attached to the unit. It holds up to 10 standard leaf bags, so you have empties on hand as you make your way around the yard. You can purchase another caddie separately for even more storage. You can also buy reusable leaf collection bags if you prefer.

Serrated Steel Impeller

This tough blade mulches everything that crosses its path. In fact, the brand is so confident in this impeller’s durability that it’s backed by a lifetime warranty.

On-Board Chipper

 Dr Leaf And Lawn Vacuum

An on-board chipper allows you to add branches up to 1.5 inches in diameter for even more thorough cleanups.

Optional Hose Kit

Purchase an optional hose kit to clean hard-to-reach spots up to seven feet away from the machine, such as window wells, beneath shrubs or along the foundation.

How We Tested It

Product testers Sheri Kaz and Dylan Fischer led the charge and set out to see what the DR Leaf and Lawn Vacuum was really made of. After unpacking and assembling the machine, they added the oil and gas and started it up. Initially, both testers found it difficult to start.

“Dylan couldn’t figure out how to properly work the choke valve, so we had to recruit some city workers,” explains Kaz. “Of course, the guy (shout out to Greenfield City Worker, Bruce!) was able to start it immediately without asking a single question.”

According to our testers, the choke lever on this machine is a piece of metal that the instructions say must be pushed inward. In reality, it needs to be pulled more to the side when starting the engine, then slowly released as the engine revs up.

Once the unit was up and running, we scattered roughly 30 gallons of leaves across two 10-foot by 4-foot rectangles of grass. One rectangle had dry leaves, and the other had damp leaves that had been misted by a hose. Our testers recorded the time it took the DR Leaf and Lawn Vacuum to suck up each set of leaves on the highest setting.

For both the wet and dry leaf tests, the DR Leaf and Lawn Vacuum gave an impressive performance, sucking up almost everything in its path in just one pass. They also appreciated how the chipper automatically turns on without you having to do anything, so it’s always ready to be fed sticks.

Fischer notes that this leaf vacuum isn’t too bad when it comes to maneuverability and feels very similar to a push lawnmower.

What wasn’t ideal, however, was the amount of dust that this unit produced.

“This machine spit out a lot of dust behind it, and Dylan was in the direct line of fire,” says Kaz. “He stopped and had to put on safety eyewear.” The team attributes this to the tubing, which spits debris out toward the top of the vacuum instead of the bottom.

Once everything had been sucked up, our testers noted that the contents of the leaf bag had been mulched up very fine and small. They also pointed out that the on-board chipper is a great feature to have.

Pros

  • Handles huge piles of wet and dry leaves
  • On-board chipper works well on branches
  • Direct bagging
  • Steel impeller with a lifetime warranty
  • Cleans large areas quickly
  • You can walk away from this machine and leave it running

Cons

  • Creates a lot of dust
  • Too bulky and stiff to make quick turns

FAQ

How does DR Lawn vacuum work?

During testing, our product testing team found that the DR Leaf and Lawn Vacuum is quite intuitive. All you have to do is start it up and push it around your yard until all of the leaves and other small debris are gone. Any branches you pick up can be put directly into the on-board chipper. When you’re finished with your cleanup, simply remove the bag and put on a new one for next time.

How long will my DR leaf vacuum run?

Dr Leaf And Lawn Vacuum

The DR Lawn and Leaf Vacuum does not run on a battery. It has a 1.0-liter fuel capacity and a 0.5-liter oil capacity and can hold up to 50 pounds of debris. You can expect this machine to run until it runs out of fuel or has reached capacity.

What Other Reviewers Had to Say

Verified Tractor Supply Co. user SayCheese writes, “The DR Leaf Vacuum is great! It came on a pallet and needed a small amount of assembly. Only 1/2-inch wrench is required. I am glad I took the advice from others and spent the extra money on the self-propelled. This may sound crazy but, I found operating it to be relaxing. Raking that would take 5-6 hrs. It only took 1-1 1/2 hrs with this machine.”

Kenneth from Little Elm, Texas, is impressed by the performance and convenience of this leaf vacuum and calls it an incredible machine.

“This thing is powerful and vacuums like a champ,” they write on the DR Power website. “However, the real beauty of this machine is its ability to bag in paper bags. Anybody can blow them into a pile, but the pickup is a pain. This eliminates the drudgery of the work and is actually fun. And your neighbors will crowd around wondering what it is!”

And Michael, a 76-year-old from Maryland, calls the DR Leaf and Lawn Vacuum a fantastic labor-saving machine.

“My usual method has been to blow leaves into a pile, rake onto a tarp, drag tarp to mulch area, run my lawn mower repeatedly over the piles and rake the flakes onto the mulch pile: maybe 6 hours of work 4 or 5 times a season,” they write. “This machine saves me maybe 4 hours each time and lots of sweat. This XTSP has proven this season to be a life-saver. I’m ecstatic, and mention it to everyone!”

DR Leaf and Lawn Vacuum vs. Billy Goat Leaf Vacuum

Our experts on the product testing team tested two walk-behind leaf vacuums for comparison sake: the DR Leaf and Lawn Vacuum and the Billy Goat Lawn & Litter Vacuum. While both units claim to be self-propelled, our team preferred the Billy Goat lawn vacuum’s maneuverability and ability to take quick turns over the stiffer drive of the DR Leaf and Lawn Vacuum. Additionally, our testers also liked the automated choke lever on the Billy Goat better than the choke lever on the DR.

In terms of performance, the DR Leaf and Lawn Vacuum cleaned up a large, 10-by-4 area more efficiently than the Billy Goat. The DR Leaf and Lawn Vacuum sucked up almost everything in under a minute with just one pass. The Billy Goat, on the other hand, took about a minute and a half and two passes to clear the same amount of leaves in the same area.

The other major difference between the two units is the bag. The Billy Goat Leaf Vacuum comes with a reusable, zipperless bag that is easy to attach and remove. However, it quickly becomes stained and unsightly. The DR Leaf and Lawn Vacuum uses standard paper leaf bags that can be closed and put down at the curb or dumped into a compost pile. And if you happen to prefer a reusable bag, you can purchase one separately for the DR for $85.

Final Verdict

“Huge fan of the chipper on this one! Anyone who has to spend a lot of time raking up branches on their lawn will undoubtedly find themselves using this feature a lot,” raves Fischer.

And that’s not the only thing we love about this machine. We’re fans of the reusable bags that are easy to dispose of, the on-board chipper and the steel impeller that mulches leaves and debris as it sucks them up. One thing is for sure: the DR Leaf and Lawn Vacuum is sure to have your yard clean in no time.

Where to Buy the DR Leaf and Lawn Vacuum

The DR Leaf and Lawn Vacuum is available for around $1,500 at Tractor Supply Co.,Acme Tools, or Blain’s Farm and Fleet. It includes a few paper leaf bags to get you started.

You work hard all week long, so the last thing you want to do is spend your precious free time raking leaves. However, leaf clean up is a necessary evil if you want your yard to look neat and tidy during the fall. Using one of the best leaf blowers or leaf vacuums is a surefire way to save yourself hours of work. But using a combo leaf blower and vacuum? It doesn’t get much better than that.

While these 2-in-1 tools sound like they’d be a major investment, they can be pretty affordable. Case in point: The Toro Ultra Blower Vac is a model you can pick up for around $100. We took this budget-friendly blower vac into our Testing Lab to see if it’s up to the task of a fall cleanup. Heres everything you need to know about this model.

What is the Toro Ultra Blower Vac?

The Toro Ultra Blower Vac is an electric leaf blower that also functions as a leaf vacuum. It has a 4-inch cord and a detachable leaf bag you wear on your shoulder while vacuuming up leaves and debris. In our studio, this blower weighed in at 7.45 pounds. Between its lightweight design, two handles and easy-to-use power knob, the Toro Ultra Blower Vac is comfortable to hold and easy to maneuver.

In blower mode, its motor produces a velocity and air volume of up to 340 cubic feet per minute (CFM), shooting air out at 260 miles per hour (MPH). In vacuum mode, it operates at an impressive 405 cubic feet per minute (CFM) and mulches everything it sucks up. While the manufacturer doesn’t specify the bag’s capacity, it had no trouble sucking up the 30 gallons of leaves we spread out. Once you’re finished, simply empty the contents into a disposable bag and you’re free to go about the rest of your day.

Keep reading for a full breakdown of the Toro Ultra Blower Vac’s features and to find out why it’s one of our budget-friendly picks.

we tried it

Toro Ultra Leaf Blower Vac

Affordability, performance and ease of use make the Toro Ultra Blower Vac a worthy addition to your tool collection.

Toro Ultra Blower Vac Features

Versatility

As mentioned above, the Toro Ultra Blower Vac functions as both a leaf blower and leaf vacuum. To switch between functions, simply attach the vacuum tube and bag and press the fan inlet cover into place. No tools required!

Mulching Capabilities

In vacuum mode, the Toro Ultra Blower Vac’s metal impeller shreds debris into mulch and deposits it into the bag. According to the manufacturer, this machine shreds leaves and reduces their volume by a ratio of 8:01. Though still fairly fine, our testers noted that the mulch produced by this blower is larger than that produced by some other models.

Variable Speed Knob

The Toro Ultra Blower Vac has one knob which starts and stops the unit. This knob also adjusts the air speed in both blower and vacuum mode.

How We Tested It

The Product Testing Team, led by associate product testers Sheri Kaz and Dylan Fischer, took the Toro Ultra Blower Vac into the Testing Lab to see whether it could meet the demands of a fall cleanup. They carefully assessed its assembly and setup, as well as its performance as both a leaf blower and leaf vacuum. Of all the units they tested, the Toro Ultra Blower Vac’s user manual was their least favorite. Unclear instructions made assembly more difficult, especially when it came time to attach one piece in particular. “There’s a detached ‘bottom inlet cover’ that needs to be attached, and the directions that supposedly explain how to do so are very poor,” explains Kaz.

Fhma24 Toro Ultra Leaf Blower Vac Annamarie Higley 01 Ssedit

Once they finished their initial assembly, however, the team was impressed by the unit’s ergonomics, noting that the two handles are nice to hold and the built-in cord management system is well designed and secure.

To test the Toro’s performance, our team scattered dry leaves around a yard, then blew them into a designated 4×10-foot area, evaluating the blower’s directional control, ease of use and noise level. According to our testers, this unit performed best when kept at exactly the right angle. “Blowing capabilities are a lot weaker,” notes Kaz. “You need to be at a pretty low angle to get the best performance from this one’s blowing function. Dylan was bent over much of the time when using this machine.”

After they finished blowing the leaves, Fischer and Kaz set out to test the vacuum function on the Toro Ultra Blower Vac. To convert the machine from a leaf blower to a leaf vacuum, they had to swap the blower tube for the vacuum tube and press the fan inlet cover into place. While it seemed easy enough, it required a bit of elbow grease from Fischer. “It was a little finicky to convert the blower to the vacuum. The plastic fittings were not smooth, which made us wonder if we were doing something wrong,” explains Kaz. “We referred back to the user manual several times while using and it took both of Dylan’s hands to press this fan inlet cover into placeit was very stiff.”

Fhma24 Toro Ultra Leaf Blower Vac Annamarie Higley 03 Ssedit

To test the Toro’s vacuum capabilities, the team spread roughly 30 gallons of leaves across two rectangles of grass. One rectangle they covered in dry leaves while the other had damp leaves which they’d misted with a hose. Our testers timed how long it took to suck up each rectangle’s leaves while evaluating the machine’s ergonomics, maneuverability, noise level and more. According to Kaz and Fischer’s report, it took just under three minutes to suck up all of the dry leaves and about one minute to suck up the wet ones. Fischer and Kaz agree that it was much easier to use the Toro Ultra Blower Vac as a leaf vacuum than as a leaf blower.

Despite some setbacks, our Product Testing Team recommends the Toro Ultra Blower Vac to anyone shopping on a budget. Given its low price point, vacuum performance and maneuverability, it’s a great value overall. “The placement of the grip handles allow for solid maneuverability, which ended up being very useful as we had to bend over to get the best performance out of the blowing function,” says Fischer.

Pros

  • Under $100
  • Lightweight
  • Two grip handles enhance maneuverability
  • Versatile power-adjustment knob
  • Sturdy metal impeller

Cons

  • Weak blowing performance
  • Cumbersome to alternate between functions

Why You Should Trust Us

Our editors and testers on the Product Testing Team have years of experience in the commerce space. Many of us are also homeowners or renters with yards of our own to keep clean. We’ve tested dozens of leaf blowers and leaf vacuums including the best backpack leaf blowers and cordless leaf blowers in order to help you make informed decisions before you buy.

FAQ

How does Toro Blower Vac work?

The Toro Ultra Blower Vac pushes out air at a speed of 260 miles per hour (MPH) in order to blow leaves and other debris away from your house, garden and driveway. In vacuum mode, it sucks leaves and other debris in through the main tube. It then finely mulches leaves through a sturdy metal impeller and deposits them into the attached bag. When you’re finished, simply empty the mulched leaves into a disposable bag or compost pile.

How do you turn the Toro Ultra Blower Vac into a blower?

Once assembled, the Toro Ultra Blower Vac is a blower by default. It has a fan inlet cover which is held in place by a quick-release latch. This cover must be attached or detached in order to switch between blower and vacuum functions.

What Other Reviewers Had to Say

The Toro Ultra Blower Vac has over 5,650 five-star ratings on Amazon. Here’s what real users have to say about it.

After six months of use, five-star reviewer Gabriel’s Dad calls the Toro Ultra Blower Vac a must have for yard work. “I used this in the fall to vacuum up and disintegrate the leaves that were all over my yard. This thing did it wonderfully,” he raves. “A big pile of leaves piled about 3 feet tall was reduced to a dense pile of pieces that barely came halfway up one of those paper lawn yard-waste bags. Amazing.”

Another Amazon customer and verified purchaser calls this an amazing tool. “As a leaf vacuum and mulcher, it’s a huge time saver. We have two large trees in our front yard and we usually spend six man hours raking and packing leaves every fall. I also run the mower at different times during the fall to mulch smaller leaf drops. I did the whole yard by myself in about three hours, and collected some 400 lbs of leaves,” they write. “The bag looks like it could get heavy, but by the time it’s full, it’s rarely more than 10 or 15 lbs. The leaves are chopped up pretty well.”

And five-star reviewer Lar P swears that in their 60-plus years, this Toro Ultra Blower Vac is the best they’ve ever had. “This thing moves leavesand here is a big tip with this Toro, dont impede the speed with any of the end nozzlesjust let this thing blow unabated, and do the work for you,” they write.

Product Comparison

Our Product Testing Team tested a total of six blower vacuum combos, including the Toro Ultra Blower Vac. They crowned this unit the best budget option for its affordability, maneuverability and performance. Other corded styles we tested were double the price of the Toro. Of course, you could opt for a gas-powered leaf blower or heavy-duty machine like the Billy Goat Leaf Vacuum, but expect to pay upwards of $200.

Final Verdict

The Toro Ultra Blower Vac offers a fast and inexpensive way to keep your yard free of leaves and other debris. This versatile blower vac is lightweight, easy to maneuver and gets the job done. But most importantly, it saves a ton of time, leaving you free to enjoy your days off however you please.

Where to Buy the Toro Ultra Blower Vac

According to the manufacturer’s website, the Toro Ultra Blower Vac retails for $80, though we’ve found it closer to $100 across stores. It’s currently available at Walmart, Ace Hardware, Lowe’s and Amazon.

Do-it-yourself electrical projects are very rewarding. You’re taking care of your own home, learning new skills and saving money on tasks that are often very doable for a smart, diligent and careful person. However, working with electricity is dangerous, and that’s why the world needs licensed electricians like me.

If you have a few projects around the house, don’t be afraid to dig in. Swapping out a light fixture, adding a USB-charging receptacle or replacing a switch with a dimmer are perfect starter tasks. Below, I’ll walk you through some common wiring tips and safety issues so you can be a more confident DIYer.

If you ever feel the task is too complex, especially regarding your electrical service panel, that’s a good time to call a pro.

Electrical Safety

The first rule of electricity club is: Turn off the breaker! Never start a project without double-checking that the power is off. Old-timers talk of when “working hot” was the norm, and I’ve had to do it a few times myself when turning off the power would cause a major disruption. It is scary as heck and dangerous. There is no need for you to do it in your home.

Carry a non-contact voltage detector in your tool bag and use it whenever you do electrical work.

Read the Instructions

“Instructions? Who needs ’em?” some may thing. Well, you do. I do, too, and that’s why I read the paperwork, especially when doing something new. Manufacturers are very detailed when it comes to explaining how to put in their devices, and the National Electrical Code (NEC) actually requires that you follow their advice. I know electricians who immediately throw away the instructions, and believe me, those are the guys (and gals) who screw things up.

Uncoil Cable Without Kinks

Non-metallic sheathed cable (NM-B), better known as Romex, is often solid copper, and it’s tough pulling it through your walls or framing if you don’t uncoil it first. Electricians have a few tricks for this, but one easy way is to grab a handful of coils from the roll and just give it a toss. Then, walk along the length and straighten it out (you can even step on it as you go). Leave the rest of the wire contained in the packaging.

Take Pictures

This tip will save you tons of time if you’re replacing a fixture or you have to take apart multiple splices. Snap a few pics with your phone before you undo anything so you can refer back to them when it’s time to put in the new fixture. Labeling your wires with electrical tape and a Sharpie will help, too.

Check the Wall Void

Cutting a hole in the wall for a switch or receptacle outlet? Find the studs first, then run your stud finder over the entire section to see if you find any other obstructions. There may be wires, pipes or blocking that could screw up the placement of your new device or your ability to pull wire.

When you cut the hole, make the horizontal cuts first. If you run into an obstruction, make that spot the new outside edge of your outlet. Then, just turn your saw around and go back the other way.

Fishing Basics

Fishing wire through walls is an exercise in patience and perseverance. There’s nothing more depressing than hearing the “thunk” of your fish stick (aka glow rod or fish rod) hitting a header you didn’t realize was there. If you plan on renovating a lot, invest in a set of quality fish sticks and a long flex bit for drilling in hard-to-reach spaces.

If you’re just adding a single receptacle, and you have access to the top of the wall, use your tape measure as an impromptu fish stick. Just drop it down to your new outlet, tape a string or your Romex right to it, and pull it up through the cavity.

Make No-Snag Connections

Fish tape, a thin, flexible metal or nylon wire-pulling tool, is often used to snake wire through pipes. It also works well through walls, floors and studs, as long as the hooked end doesn’t get snagged on something. To make a smooth transition on the end of your fish tape, strip off six to eight inches of the sheathing from your NM-B cable.

Cut off all but one wire, trimming the cable at a steep angle to avoid leaving a “shoulder.” Slide the single long wire through the end of the fish tape, fold it over, and wrap the electrical tape tightly around the entire head (including the cut-off edge of the Romex). As you wrap the tape, smooth out any bumps to make the head as smooth as you can.

Pack Boxes Neatly

I just replaced a receptacle with one I can charge my phone with, and the box was so messy that I spent an hour straightening up the wires. Jammed boxes with lots of extra nonsense call you out as an amateur, so take the time to neatly fold and push bundles of wires to the back of the box, using pigtails or short pieces of wire to attach to the device (when you have room).

Speaking of room, stuffing too many wires in an electrical box is a code violation. The NEC periodically updates “box fill” requirements, so find out which code cycle your jurisdiction follows to ensure you’re keeping things legal.

Label Your Breakers

This is a fantastic entry-level project that makes your life easier and your house safer. When I moved into my current house, I needed to turn off the dishwasher circuit to replace a drain pump. Was it the breaker labeled “dishwasher”? Nope! That one controlled the countertop receptacles. For some reason, electrical panels are very rarely properly labeled.

Enlist a friend, and start flipping breakers. If you don’t have a willing pal, buy a circuit tracer, which is very affordable nowadays, a receptacle tester, or just use a loud radio. Plug it in, turn it up, and flip the breakers until the radio goes off. Once you have the breakers worked out, label them somewhere inside or near the electrical panel.

There’s no denying that fall foliage is a sight to behold–at least while it’s still on the trees. But when all those leaves start to blanket your lawn and gardens, that’s another story. One of the fastest ways to combat a yard full of leaves is by investing in a good leaf blower orlawn vacuum. But if you don’t have the room or the budget for multiple tools, then you’ll want to pick up a leaf blower and vacuum combo.

One of our favorite leaf blowers that also functions as a leaf vacuum is the Craftsman backpack leaf blower. It’s powerful, easy to use and budget-friendly. In order to see how well this Craftsman backpack blower stands up to a mountain of leaves, we sent it to our testing lab for close inspection. Heres everything you need to know about this model before you add it to your arsenal of lawn equipment.

What is the Craftsman Backpack Leaf Blower?

The Craftsman backpack leaf blower is an electric leaf blower. It has a 12-inch cord and is a true backpack-style lawn tool with two straps, making it less cumbersome than a sling bag. This leaf blower boasts a powerful 12-amp motor with a velocity and air volume of up to 450 cubic feet per minute (CFM). When it comes to speed, this tool can shoot air out at 260 miles per hour (MPH).

At under 12 pounds, this Craftsman backpack blower is lightweight and incredibly easy to use and maneuver, thanks to its user-friendly handles. But that’s not the only reason we love it so much. This Craftsman blower also functions as a leaf vacuum.

“Vacuums are effective when cleaning up smaller spaces and tight areas. For example, cleaning leaves in bushes,” explains Francisco Fuenmayor, a handyman and home improvement expert at LocalProBook. “A leaf blower won’t be able to blow the leaves out of there, while blowers are better for quickly moving large amounts of debris across bigger spaces.”

No tools are required to switch this from blower to vacuum mode. In vacuum mode, it sucks up and mulches up to 55 liters of leaves into the backpack. Once the bag is full, simply open it up and dump all of the mulched debris out. Yard work has never been so easy! Keep reading for a full breakdown of the Craftsman backpack blower’s features and to find out why it’s one of the best backpack leaf blowers we’ve tested.

Craftsman Backpack Leaf Blower

The Craftsman backpack leaf blower also functions as a leaf vacuum for quick and easy cleanup.

Craftsman Backpack Leaf Blower Features

Versatility

As mentioned above, the Craftsman backpack blower functions as both a leaf blower and a leaf vacuum. In order to switch between functions, all you have to do is switch the tubes and twist open the fan cover. The fan cover is attached to the machine so you don’t lose it, and no tools are required.

Engine Power and Blowing Force

The Craftsman backpack blower is pretty powerful given its size and price point. Its 12-amp motor allows it to clear tough debris like wet leaves and pebbles. It moves air at 450 cubic feet per minute (CFM). “A strong blower with good CFM is great for cleaning hard-to-reach corners and gathering debris from garden beds into neat piles on the lawn,” explains Fuenmayor. Additionally, the Craftsman backpack blower blows air at up to 260 MPH. A higher MPH increases the distance you are able to clear.

Holding Crafstman Backpack

Mulching Capabilities

In vacuum mode, the Craftsman backpack blower’s plastic impeller shreds debris into mulch and deposits it into the backpack. According to the manufacturer, this machine shreds leaves and reduces their volume by a ratio of 12:01. During testing, our testers noted that this blower mulched the leaves very finely.

Warranty

The Craftsman backpack blower is covered by a three-year limited warranty. This means that for three years following the date of purchase or date of delivery of the product (whichever date is later), this machine is warrantied against defects in material or workmanship. This warranty is extended only to the original end-user purchaser of the product. Read more about Craftsman’s warranty policy here.

How We Tested It

The product testing team, led by associate product testers Sheri Kaz and Dylan Fischer, took this Craftsman backpack blower into our testing lab to see what it’s really made of. They looked at how easy it was to assemble and how well it performed as both a leaf blower and a leaf vacuum.

Using Craftsman Backpack 2

Assembly

Our testers ran into some initial hiccups during the assembly process, noting that the plastic pieces didn’t click into place as satisfyingly as they would have liked. However, they describe the process itself as pretty straightforward. Once it was assembled and ready to go, our testers especially liked the ergonomic handles which allowed them to get a good grip before they started blowing.

Leaf Blowing

To test the Craftsman’s performance as a leaf blower, our team scattered dry leaves around the yard, then blew them into a designated 4-by-10-foot area before vacuuming, evaluating the blower’s directional control, ease of use and noise level. Our testers were really impressed by the power behind this blower. However, it was a bit too powerful at times. “It would be nice if there were multiple speed levels, because the one will blow your pile all around as you get closer to it,” says Kaz. Additionally, this leaf blower registered 106.5 decibels. In other words, it’s loud! Ear and eye protection are strongly recommended.

Vacuuming

After they finished blowing the leaves, our testers set out to test the vacuum function on the Craftsman backpack blower. To convert the machine from a leaf blower to a leaf vacuum, Kaz and Fisher had to swap the blower tube for the vacuum tube and twist open the fan cover, which is attached to the machine so you don’t lose it. Though easy in theory, Kaz and Fischer struggled a bit here, noting that the tubes don’t really click into place. But after double-checking the user manual, they were back in business.

Emptying Craftsman Backpack 2

For this test, our testers spread roughly 30 gallons of leaves across two rectangles of grass. They covered one rectangle in dry leaves and the other had damp leaves, which had been misted with a hose. Our testers timed how long it took to suck up each rectangle’s leaves while evaluating the ergonomics, maneuverability, noise level and more.

According to Kaz and Fischer’s report, it took just under three minutes to suck up all of the dry leaves and just over one minute to suck up all of the wet leaves. Upon emptying the bag, they noted that the leaves had been very finely mulched.

Comfort

As for comfort, Fischer points out that the unit itself gets pretty heavy to use for an extended length of time. Luckily, the overall backpack design helped. “The backpack is nice on this one because it’s a full backpack that goes over both shoulders,” he says. “It provides a lot of relief from the weight.”

Overall, our product testing team highly recommends the Craftsman backpack blower. It was a top performer in the lab and is both easy and comfortable to use. “The two-strapped backpack-style bag works amazingly well and should be the standard for all these handheld vacuums. It’s a great way to equally distribute weight and goes a long way to mitigate fatigue,” raves Fischer.

And for less than $100, you simply can’t go wrong.

Using Craftsman Backpack

Pros:

  • Functions as a leaf blower and a leaf vacuum
  • Two-strapped backpack provides relief from the weight of the unit
  • Powerful performance
  • Finely mulches leaves and debris it vacuums
  • Under $100
  • Ergonomic handles

Cons:

  • Not cordless
  • Plastic pieces don’t readily click into place

Why You Should Trust Us

Our editors and testers on the product testing team have years of experience in the commerce space. We’ve tested dozens of leaf blowers and leaf vacuums, including the Husqvarna Backpack Blower, Stihl BR 600 Backpack Blower and the Ego Leaf Blower. And we don’t plan on stopping there! Currently, we are testing more leaf blowers and leaf vacuums to ensure we help you make informed decisions based on real-life testing before you buy.

To further discuss the benefits and uses of leaf blowers and vacuums, we also enlisted the expertise of Francisco Fuenmayor, a handyman and home improvement expert at LocalProBook.

FAQ

What kind of gas does a Craftsman backpack leaf blower take?

This Craftsman backpack blower is electric and does not take gas.

Why won’t my Craftsman backpack blower start?

First, make sure your Craftsman backpack blower is plugged in. The cord on this model is only 12 inches long, so an extension cord may be required.

If that doesn’t work, check the fan cover. “Initially, you have to turn the cover to lock it into place in order for the machine to turn on,” explains Fischer. “We didn’t realized this, so the machine wouldn’t start after several tries. Finally, after about five attempts and referring to the user manual, it seemed that whatever was hanging it up resolved itself and we were able to click the cover into place.”

What kind of oil goes in a Craftsman?

This Craftsman backpack blower does not require oil.

What Other Reviewers and Experts Had to Say

Five-star reviewer Robert T Kennedy appreciates how well this unit cleans his yard without sucking up expensive decorative stones. “I liked the multiple options for the leaf blower,” he writes. “One piece of equipment keeps my lawn, garden, walkways and driveway clean with its powerful motor. Definitely worth the reasonable price.”

Micray, another five-star reviewer, calls the Craftsman backpack blower a back-saver. “This has been such a lifesaver trying to clean up. My backyard had hundreds of those little bitty gumballs, and this has made picking them up so much easier,” they write.

After running into some of the same issues as our product testing team in regards to getting the pieces into place, verified user Girly Gamer is happy to have figured it out. “It ended up working beautifully on the vacuum part which is all I wanted. Great power, bag is comfortable and holds A LOT! It is fairly heavy, but with the two handles, it’s not too bad,” they write. “Saved me big time from raking and bending over to pick up piles of pine needles which had been building up for a year! Even mulched pine cones and twigs fine…”

Product Comparison

Our product testing team tested a total of six blower vacuum combos including the Craftsman backpack blower. They labeled this unit the best overall for its performance, two-strap backpack style and good value. We also tested the Toro Ultra Blower Vac, another corded model which functions as a blower and a vacuum. The Craftsman and the Toro are both similarly sized and priced, there was a significant difference in performance.

The Craftsman backpack blower has a velocity and air volume of up to 450 cubic feet per minute (CFM) and expels air at 260 miles per hour (MPH). The Toro, on the other hand, has a velocity and air volume of 340 CFM in blow mode and 405 CFM in vac mode. And though the Toro boasts the same 260 MPH as the Craftsman, our testers found the Toro’s blowing performance to be much weaker than the Craftsman backpack blower.

Additionally, the Craftsman backpack blower has a two-strapped backpack-style bag which makes it easy to tote around the yard. The Toro has one strap which you can sling over your shoulder. Though not uncomfortable, it’s not as convenient as the Craftsman backpack blower.

Final Verdict

If you’re looking for an inexpensive way to keep your yard neat and tidy, you can’t go wrong with the Craftsman backpack blower. This versatile blower is comfortable, easy to use and powerful enough to get the job done. In short, you can expect your lawn to look like a million bucks all autumn long thanks to this handy backpack blower.

What the Paint Colors of 2025 Tell Us About Where Interior Design Is Headed https://www.familyhandyman.com/article/colors-of-the-year-meaning/ Tue, 24 Sep 2024 16:14:07 +0000 The pros explain why and when using the 2025 Colors of the Year is helpful and what it tells us about the direction of design trends.

The post What the Paint Colors of 2025 Tell Us About Where Interior Design Is Headed appeared first on Family Handyman.

]]>
An easy and economical way to transform a room is to choose a new paint color for your walls. But with so many shades to choose from, making a selection can be daunting. If you want to narrow the field, why not take inspiration from the 2025 Colors of the Year? Many major paint companies select these annual trending tones.

I spoke with two decor professionals to find out what the 2025 Colors of the Year can tell us about where home fashions are heading, how and when they can help you make a stylish home your own, and how to introduce these trends in a way that feels timeless.

What Are the Colors of the Year?

Every fall, many major paint brands announce their Colors of the Year. “They’re a way for interior professionals and paint companies to demonstrate leadership in the space,” Interior Designer Heather Mastrangeli says.

She believes that, to some degree, the Color of the Year announcements are a marketing tactic. However, that doesn’t mean they’re meaningless. Companies make their selections by looking at current consumer moods and desires, along with lifestyle and design trend forecasting. This means that, although the colors vary by brand, there can be meaningful emerging themes amongst the hues.

Mastrangeli explains that there’s a direct correlation between the fashion industry and the interior design industry. “Typically, fashion is a little ahead of interior design, and trends begin in Europe before making their way to the U.S.,” she says. “As we see 2025 Color of the Year announcements, we know that these shades are carefully selected based on a multitude of criteria and will make a splash in the interior design world.”

Should I Care About the Colors of the Year?

You don’t have to select a Color of the Year to create a timeless, stylish spaceand sometimes, these trending shades won’t fit with your personal preferences or the aesthetic you’re aiming for. However, if you need inspiration on the best interior paint colors for redesigning a room, Mastrangeli explains Colors of the Year can be a helpful starting point. “The risk [of making a design misstep] is mitigated slightly by turning to color trends,” she says.

They can help narrow down the overwhelming number of color options and provide inspiration and focus for an overall interior design style. If you like to be ahead of the curve with trends, you can’t go wrong with selecting a 2025 Color of the Year.

Will the Colors of the Year Age Well?

The colors of the year are chosen based on current and forecasted design trends rather than on how timeless the shades are. Certain shades may become dated more quickly than others. However, Interior Designer Megan Hersch says the trends tend to last multiple years and aren’t likely to shift to the opposite extreme quickly. “So the fear of your home looking outdated if you select a color from within the trend is not always warranted,” she says.

Mastrangeli says that it’s rarely the colors on their own that create issues with aging. “It’s the combination of the painted walls, the interior design, and the furnishings that can cause a space to look dated,” she says. Thinking about how all these elements come together can help you retain a timeless appeal when you’re painting your home to sell.

Looking at the emerging 2025 Colors of the Year, the trend is leaning towards earthy, warm, soothing and comforting shades, rather than contemporary cool tones. Mastrangeli says these shades have timeless staying power when combined with the right furnishings and finishes.

What The 2025 Colors of the Year Tell Us About Where Interior Design Is Headed

Hersch says that after several years of “hygge” home style, featuring warm woods and soft neutrals, people continue to look for a welcoming respite from the outside world. “The cooler grays of 10 years ago are giving way to colors with more sophistication and depth, which is where I believe the level of design will stay while people turn back toward more human connection and warmth,” she says.

Mastrangeli also believes the upheaval of the global pandemic has influenced the warm tone trends in the 2025 Colors of the Year selections. “When there’s a crisis, people crave comfort,” she says. “They want to be surrounded by warmth after making it through such a turbulent time.”

How To Cut Sheet Metal https://www.familyhandyman.com/project/how-to-cut-sheet-metal/ Fri, 20 Sep 2024 15:57:47 +0000 https://www.familyhandyman.com/?post_type=project&p=631465 Learn how to cut sheet metal with our step-by-step guide showing multiple techniques for precise, safe cuts for your DIY projects.

The post How To Cut Sheet Metal appeared first on Family Handyman.

]]>

When cutting sheet metal, it’s crucial to use the correct methods to get the best results while staying safe. You may need to know how to cut sheet metal while working on DIY craft projects, gutter repair, ductwork, or metal roofing.

Sheet metal is made from different materials and comes in various thicknesses, known as gauges. An easy way to remember sheet metal thickness is that the higher the gauge number, the thinner it is. The thicker the sheet metal, the higher the cost tends to be. Metals such as copper, aluminum, brass, and cold-rolled steel are generally soft, and tin snips are usually suitable for cutting these softer metals.

Most strong and thick sheet metals will require power tools for cutting, such as an angle grinder, band saw, rotary tool, circular saw, or chop saw. I used 22 gauge cold-rolled steel sheet metal for demonstration purposes and different common household tools to cut it.

How to cut sheet metal with tin snips

  • Wear work gloves and eye protection to avoid cutting yourself and protect yourself from flying metal shards.
  • Mark the sheet metal where you’d like to cut it with a carbide-tipped scribe, pencil, or marker.
  • Use a stable bench or table to support your sheet metal. Hold the sheet over the edge or put 2x4s underneath the metal and clamp it down.
  • Use a carbide drill bit to drill a hole in the metal, large enough for the bottom blade of the tin snips to fit into. Since I am cutting a circle, I am using green tin snips.
    • NOTE: Tin snips have three different colored handles, each serving a specific purpose. Tin snips with green handles are designed to cut in the right direction, while those with red handles are designed to cut in the left direction. Tin snips with yellow handles are used to cut straight lines.
  • Start by inserting the bottom blade of the tin snips into the hole drilled in the center of the sheet metal. Just like cutting with scissors, fully open the blade and squeeze down to cut along the marked line. Follow the circle until you reach the end of the cut.
  • Use a metal file to remove any sharp edges left after cutting metal. File in one direction.
  • Repeat this process for a straight-cut line, except you will use yellow tin snips.

A person wearing yellow gloves is using tin snips to cut a circular shape out of a sheet of metal on a wooden workbench. Various tools are scattered on the bench, including another pair of snips, a drill, and tape measures.

Removing Water Stains With Mayo: How To Do It https://www.familyhandyman.com/article/remove-water-stains-with-mayonnaise/ Fri, 20 Sep 2024 14:51:57 +0000 https://www.familyhandyman.com/?p=636457 Rather than throwing out that old furniture, turn to your pantry for a quick solution.

The post Removing Water Stains With Mayo: How To Do It appeared first on Family Handyman.

Water stains on wooden furniture can be unsightly and frustrating. While many commercial products can remove these marks, you might be surprised to learn that a common kitchen condiment can be just as effective. With its oil content and creamy texture, Mayonnaise has emerged as an unexpected hero in the battle against water stains on wood surfaces.

There’s an interesting scientific reason for this unusual cleaning method to restore your wooden furniture to its former glory.

Does Mayo Remove Water Stains?

Often, yes. Mayonnaise can effectively remove water stains from wood surfaces. The success of this method lies in its composition. Its primary ingredientsoil and egg yolkswork together to address the underlying causes of water stains.

The oils in mayonnaise penetrate the wood, displacing the moisture that caused the stain. Meanwhile, the fats help to condition the wood, potentially restoring its natural luster. The vinegar or lemon juice often present in mayonnaise can also help to break down any mineral deposits left behind by the water.

How to Remove Water Stains With Mayo

Materials: You’ll need mayonnaise, a soft cloth, and a clean, dry towel.

Step-by-step

  • Thoroughly clean the surface area: Gently clean the stained area with a damp cloth to remove dust or debris.
  • Apply the mayonnaise: Spread a thick layer of mayonnaise directly onto the water stain. Make sure to cover the entire affected area. Allow the mayonnaise to remain on the stain for at least an hour. For tougher stains, you may want to leave it overnight.
  • Wipe off the mayonnaise: Gently wipe away the mayonnaise using a soft, clean cloth.
  • Buff the area: With a clean, dry towel, buff the treated area to remove any remaining oil residue.
  • Assess the results: Check if the stain has disappeared. If it’s still visible, you may need to repeat the process.
    • If needed, you can apply furniture polish to restore shine and protect the wood.

Does This Method Always Work?

This viral trend has been attempted online many times with varying results. Some swear by the technique, while others claim it didn’t have any effect. That will depend on several different factors, including the wood types, damage significance and any user error.

Remember, while this method is generally safe for most wood finishes, it’s always wise to test it on an inconspicuous area first. If you’re dealing with sentimental, valuable or antique furniture, consider consulting a professional before attempting DIY treatments.

How We Tested It

The first thing that stood out to me about this sprayer was the case that it came in. I often find that molded plastic cases are almost useless as it seems impossible to get the tools back into their designated slots. In this case (pun intended), the parts were easily stowed and the case could be buttoned up.

Three-panel image showing steps for using a paint sprayer. The first panel shows pouring paint into a sprayer container. The second panel depicts attaching the sprayer component to the container. The third panel shows securing the sprayer and container together.

The next thing I noticed is what I would call built-in nozzles. Most of the hand-held sprayers that Ive used utilize a type of two-part metal nozzle wherein you pick the fluid tip size based on your material. You then insert a matching needle tip, which is prone to getting lost, even if just dropped onto carpeting or grass, not to mention floating around at the bottom of a tool box. These needless nozzles seemed like a bonus and definitely were.

I set out to paint the exterior of one of my wooden sheds, which was in serious need of painting. After power washing it, scraping off some old paint and waiting for it to dry, I filled the 1300-milliliter (approximately 1/3rd gallon) that works with the iSpray nozzle with an inexpensive, acrylic-based exterior paint and primer in one. I attached the iSpray nozzle, which is supposed to mimic the texture of a roller, and plugged in the sprayer. Since it was just an outside shed, I eschewed practice and fine-tuning in water or on cardboard and went straight for the shed.

Tuning and Usage

As expected, some fine-tuning was required. I ended up with a few drips, but that was entirely user error and not a result of the settings, which I had adjusted based on the usagehaving set the X-boost power dial (I.e., the air power) to the middle of its range and the material flow control to the middle of its range. Also, I had the spray width set to wide, and after some technique adjustments, this worked out to be a great combination of power and volume for the paint.

A person wearing a beige cap, gray t-shirt, and glasses uses a yellow and black paint sprayer to paint a green vertical surface. The person is standing outdoors next to a wooden structure.

I went through the first container of paint rather quickly due to my futzing around with the technique. As such, I was a little worried about how much paint I was going through. But by the time I was onto my second container of paint, I was getting great distance and coverage. I was able to get a single coat onto approximately 60 square feet with less than 1/3 of a gallon of paint. This amount is spot on if estimating that I can spray 150 to 200 square feet per gallon.

The coating was even at the start and end of the spray cycle, as well as at the edges of the spray pattern. I used the common overlap technique with horizontal paths and completed the edges with the spray width set to the narrow setting. The nozzle cleanup was quick and painless. I was really pleased with the results: The shed went from a sad and dreary backyard eyesore to looking like a proud member of the outdoor decor.

Pros

  • Carrying case
  • Multiple nozzles and containers
  • Easy to clean
  • Detail finish and spray at the same time
  • Variable air power control
  • Can use stains, enamels, paints and more

Cons

  • Not great for large projects
  • Pricier than most handheld HVLP sprayers

Why Trust Us

Ive been painting homes for nearly 40 years, and while much of the process remains the same, the paints and sprayers have improved greatly. Ive been using modern DIY and professional sprayers for a couple of years and have been impressed with their capabilities, especially at such reasonable prices.

When I learned that I would be reviewing a selection of paint sprayers, I was eager to find out firsthand how they would stack up. I reviewed the equipment from the vantage point of a non-professional, intent on offering DIYers an idea of what each sprayer could and could not do. My review offers potential consumers a realistic and practical guide to an array of sprayer options.

FAQ

Do you have to thin paint for Wagner Flexio 3500?

You dont have to thin paint for the Wagner Flexio 3500, but sometimes, it may be necessary. Wagner advises users that most paints do not need to be thinned and that optimal spray performance can be achieved by adjusting the airflow, spray width and material flow control. If thinning, its advised to delete the material in steps of 5-10%.

Can I use Wagner Flexio 3500 to paint a ceiling?

With some practice, spraying a ceiling can be done without too much mess. Youll want to be cautious of where you align the pickup tube when using the Flexio to paint a ceiling. Its ideal to spray with a horizontally held sprayer, but that isn’t possible when painting a ceiling. So, when painting a ceiling with the Flexio 3500, point the pickup tube toward the handle of the sprayer. The paint is then taken up in the tube when the sprayer is pointed upward. Wagner warns that the sprayer should not be used at greater than a 45-degree angle. If the angle is too steep, material could get into the turbine and damage it. Eye protection and a mask are always recommended when using a sprayer, but especially important when painting a ceiling.

Can I leave paint in my Wagner paint sprayer overnight?

Ideally, you wouldn’t leave paint in the sprayer overnight because the paint may dry on the nozzle and clog it. The system is somewhat closed to the elements, so it is ok to leave paint in the sprayer for short periods between use, such as overnight or for a break. Before using the sprayer, after it has sat, be sure to mix the paint in the container. Also, it will likely be necessary to remove paint from the hardened nozzle tip. Once its cleared, you should be good to go.

What Other Reviewers/Experts Had to Say

Five-star The Home Depot reviewer Brian1 claims, “I purchased the Flexio 3500 about six weeks ago when we were in the middle of remodeling our master bathroom. We had urethane-finished birch wood that we wanted painted. The sprayer delivered beyond our expectations. The finish was exceptional (factory-like finish). It was easy to use, and clean-up was a breeze.

“So far, Ive used it to paint doors and the whole exterior of my stucco house. It worked well. On stucco, it does cover in one go, but be ready to buy extra gallons of paint. I tried rolling, and the spray would cover way more in such a short time! It is super easy to clean thoroughly, ” says 5-star reviewer fonf64.

Eric on The Home Depot gives the Wagner Flexio 5 stars and says, I bought this item just in case/backup for doing my house. I ended up having to use this for the whole house. The house came out great. Saved me about $20,000 to do this my self. The one thing that I wish there was an easier way to have a faster fill method. I believe that is what took me the longest to do. But besides [that], it’s great with thick and thin paint. I recommend this product 100 percent.

Wagner Flexio 3500 vs Earlex HVLP Sprayer

Lately Ive been using an Earlex HVLP sprayer for my smaller projects. The Earlex HVLP sprayer is a good comparison for the Wagner Flexio 3500 as they are both handheld HVLP sprayers. The Earlex comes in at a lower price and is lighter so let’s take a look at the usage.

The Earlex is differs from the Wagner in that it uses nozzles that are matched to your material and desired finish. On the other hand, the Wagner just has two nozzlesone for fine spraying and one for wider, textured spraying. Another key difference is that the air cap, either fine or wide spray, must be selected on the Earlex. The Earlex does not come with a case and it’s important to keep all the nozzles together with the sprayer. I keep my nozzles and tools in a plastic bag but still don’t have a convenient way to ensure that the bag is with the sprayer. Its these factors along with the cleanup that makes the Wagner a clear winner for being easier to use.

Final Verdict

At first, I wasnt convinced the two-nozzle solution was going to be adequate. It proved to be more than adequate and Im sold. A lot of the experimentation and guesswork were taken away by knowing that the either nozzle could handle whatever material I was going to use. Plus, the cleanup was such a breeze that I dont dread pulling out the sprayer. This sprayer will be taking a front-and-center space in my collection of painting tools. I look forward to more projects with it.

Where to Buy the Wagner Flexio 3500

You can pick up the Wagner Flexio at The Home Depot or order it online for under $180.

If you enjoy spending time with friends and family as much as I do, you know having a bar at home makes entertaining that much easier. Having all your beverages and accessories within reach and well-organized will make your social gatherings stress-free. So, why not make it yourself? All your choices, personality, character and style. Here is to building a bar – Cheers!

A note about paint and stain

You will notice that this project contains both painted and stained components. When constructing woodworking projects such as this, I always paint and stain my parts before assembling them. This allows the project to be completed faster by just touching up paint and requires less taping off and cutting in. That’s why I’ll include the finish in the cutting list below.

The only exception to that rule is when a component requires a lot of machining (such as the wine rack on this project) and will require the pieces to be sanded before being put together.

Remove the bark on the slab

Purchase a flattened live edge slab roughly 1-1/2-inches thick or buy a thicker slab and flatten it yourself with a planner, wide belt sander, or router gantry.

Remove all the bark along the natural edge of your live edge bar top (A). You may find some of the bark is loose, and some of it may be harder to pull off. To remove the bark, use a chisel and enter along the edge of the cadmium layer, which is the innermost part of the bark but not the actual wood. Hammer at the chisel to pry away the bark. Dont worry if it isnt perfect at this point. You will come back and clean it up with a wire wheel and sanding pad later.

  • Tip: Avoid cutting bark with your circular saw. It often has dirt and small pebbles embedded in it that will dull or chip the blades when cutting it.

Using volt meter on outlet

Using a Non-Contact Voltage Tester Incorrectly

Mistake: Misusing your tester.

Electricians always carry non-contact voltage testers with them, and you should have one, too. They’re inexpensive and easy to use, and they help keep you safe when doing DIY electrical work.

Solution: Test. Use. Verify.

First, test the tester by holding it to a known live circuit, like a powered appliance or lamp cord. Or, insert it into a receptacle (use the smaller slot, which is the hot side). The tester should light up and/or beep. Locate the circuit you’ll be working on and turn off the breaker. Use the tester to verify the circuit’s off, then check the tester on the same live circuit as before to confirm it functioned correctly.

Outside corners on dormers needs special flashing details to prevent water leaks. This article explains two foolproof methods for making sure that corners shed water and stay dry for the life of the roof.

Wrapped Corner Method

There are two good ways to handle corner flashing. The first bending two pieces and caulking the joint is the most common because you can do it immediately with the flashing at hand. If you bend crisp corners and nail carefully, you’ll only leave a tiny hole to caulk at the corner.

Remember to place the flashing under the weather barrier on the dormer. If you’re flashing a masonry chimney, nail the flashing to the roof as far up the flashing as possible. Cap flashing (counter flashing) inserted into mortar joints will cover the top edge.

Bend a flap down

Diy Roof Flashing Techniques For Outside Corners

Run the base flashing 4 to 5 in. beyond the dormer and cut the top section along the dormer edge. Bend the flap down and nail along the top edge.

Notch the step flashing

Diy Roof Flashing Techniques For Outside Corners Fh05jau 460 05 005

Notch the first step flashing, leaving a 1-in. flap to bend around the front of the dormer. Nail along its upper edge. Add shingles and additional step flashing.

Caulk

Diy Roof Flashing Techniques For Outside Corners

Squeeze a thin bead of caulk over the leftover gap and along the bottom joint.

Soldered Corner Method

The second, forming and soldering a custom piece to fit the corner, is the best because it doesn’t leave any potential leak spots (at the caulked gaps). Unfortunately, you can’t solder aluminum flashing, and soldering galvanized steel is difficult. You’ll have to measure your roof slope and have a sheet metal or gutter-making shop make one for you. You may have to nail the lower edge to the roof to hold it flat. If so, cover the nail head with a dab of silicone.

Diy Roof Flashing Techniques For Outside Corners

Lay soldered corner flashing around the corner and over the base flashing. Nail the flashing to the dormer near the top edge and continue with the shingles and step flashing.

Bosch Laser Measure Review: We Tried Two Models, and Here’s How it Went https://www.familyhandyman.com/article/bosch-laser-measure-review/ Wed, 28 Aug 2024 18:20:19 +0000 https://www.familyhandyman.com/?p=632178 What's a Bosch laser tape measure? We tested two to see how they perform and stack up against other laser tape measures.

The post Bosch Laser Measure Review: We Tried Two Models, and Here’s How it Went appeared first on Family Handyman.

]]>
Our best laser tape measures review includes two Bosch laser tape measure models. We tested them both under real-world conditions to see how the models, from different ends of the pricing spectrum, perform under rigorous testing and use. The Bosch Blaze GLM50C, on the higher end, features Bluetooth capability and operates with the help of the Bosch MeasureOn mobile app. The other, the Bosch Blaze GLM100-23, is battery-operated and provides accurate measurements with a real-time display.

While some of our testing results were surprising, both models performed well in their capacities. The GLM100-23 proved easy to use and accurate indoors within sixteenth of an inch. The GLM50C performed well when paired with the app.

Here are our testing results for both Bosch laser tape measures, along with information about other Bosch models to help you decide if Bosch is the right brand for you and which model will fit your DIY or professional needs best.

What is a Bosch laser tape measure?

Understanding how to read a tape measure is crucial at home or on the job site. However, Bosch is working to simplify the task through its extensive lineup of laser measuring tools. The company offers multiple laser tape measures via its Blaze line, and there are models to meet any DIY budget.

Bosch also blurs the line between DIY and professional-grade laser measure tools, with some models featuring green lasers meant for outdoor use and others with Bluetooth and mobile app functionality.

Our product testing team noticed that the backlit displays of both models we tested were easy to read and navigate. Both were easy to operate, and using each felt intuitive to our testers. One tester noted that the GLM50C, the most expensive of the two, is designed well enough to perform well for both DIYers and pros alike.

The Bosch Laser Measure GLM100-23 is a simple laser measurement tool with fewer features. You might call it a laser measure for purists. Priced at around $45, our testers noted that it was the most compact laser tape measure they tested, and its accuracy is a plus for smaller projects.

Pros:

  • Measures distances up to 165 feet
  • Backlit displays are easy to read
  • Intuitive functions that are easy to use
  • Accuracy within 1/16-inch
  • Bosch MeasureOn app includes excellent features
  • Rounding capabilities

Cons:

  • Not the lowest-priced option available
  • Bosch offers relatively short one and two-year warranties on many products

Bosch Laser Measure Features

Bosch GLM100-23

The Bosch GLM100-23 is the most basic of the two Bosch laser measure tools we tested. The GLM 100-23 would work well in a DIYer’s or professional’s tool kit to supplement a standard tape measure. The device features no metric measuring functions; however, it does have instant point-and-shoot measuring ability in an impressively compact design. It’s also incredibly accurate at taking precise measurements indoors.

Bosch GLM50C

The GLM50C is more advanced. Its many features make it a solid choice for professionals and avid DIYers who primarily work indoors. The tool incorporates a bright and easy-to-read screen, rotating display, canvas carrying case, clip and Bluetooth capability. Additionally, it’s designed for use with Bosch’s MeasureOn mobile app, which provides more advanced features as well.

How We Tested Them

Our testing team evaluated and tested both Bosch Laser Measure devices. The testers reported on everything from unboxing and standard use to mobile app functionality for each one.

Testing involved manually checking accuracy under several typical working conditions, reporting on the device’s size and comfort, operating all of the device’s functions and mixing combinations of functions when applicable. The product testers recorded their results as testing took place to ensure accuracy and minimize bias. Finally, the team generated a report that included their findings and a rating score for each tool.

Bosch Laser Measure mobile app testing

The Bosch Laser Measure GLM100-23 ranked as the best basic laser measure in our review, and the Bosch Blaze GLM50C earned the badge of being the best splurge, according to the test results.

FAQ

How do you use a Bosch laser measure?

A digital tape measure guide can help you learn about all of the functions of a laser tape measure. However, we found the Bosch laser measures relatively easy to operate.

Some models only require you to point and shoot the device for an instant measurement reading, while others include functions to calculate areas and volumes of spaces. The processes for more complex models include setting your desired measurement (metric or standard), choosing the functions you wish it to perform and letting the device do the rest.

Can you calibrate the Bosch laser measure?

The user can’t calibrate typical consumer-grade Bosch laser measures. In most cases, the devices are accurate within 1/16th of an inch. However, if your Bosch laser measure is showing inaccuracies, there are a couple of things to check.

First, be sure the device is aimed correctly at the object you’re measuring. If that fails, try to aim at surfaces that aren’t shiny. Placing cardboard or something similar in front of a shiny object can increase accuracy. Finally, ensure there are no objects in the way of your measurement, including heavy airborne particles such as sawdust.

What app for Bosch laser measure?

Bosch provides its MeasureOn mobile app for use with its Bluetooth and app-compatible measuring devices. Our product testing team says the app is extremely useful and features excellent tools for avid DIYers, designers, construction workers and engineers.

What Others Have to Say

Reviews for Bosch laser measures, in general, are overwhelmingly positive, with 85% of The Home Depot reviewers recommending the product they purchased. The tools carry a 4.4 out of 5-star rating on the platform.

While the models we tested included red laser technology, intended for indoor use only, the company’s outdoor-capable green laser devices, such as the Blaze 165 ft Green Laser Distance Measuring Tool, also earn an average of 4.7 stars with The Home Depot customers.

Positive reviews typically cite the tools’ compact designs, lightweight, spot-on accuracy and durability as the reasons for the high praise. However, some negative reviews exist. Reports of inaccurate measurements and an inability to operate red laser technology devices outdoors are the top reasons for lower ratings.

Bosch Laser Measure vs. Leica Laser Measure

Bosch Laser Measure Vs Leica comparison test

We also tested the Leica Laser Measure and compared it to our Bosch Blaze Bluetooth-Enabled device. While the devices are pretty similar in function, the Leica Laser Measure has a measuring capacity of up to 330 feet, while the Bosch maxes out at 165 feet.

Both devices can function with a proprietary mobile app and provide additional functions like distance measuring, multiple measurements, data-point storage, and area and volume calculations.

The Leica offers a Pythagoras function and a 60-second timer delay option. However, Bosch’s MeasureOn app is free to use, while Leica’s requires a paid subscription. The MeasureOn app from Bosch is more functional, too. Our testers discovered some connectivity troubles with the Leica app as well.

Additionally, the Leica tool is more costly, retailing for $199 against Bosch’s $119 price tag.

Final Verdict

While the two Bosch laser measuring tools we tested are very different from each other based on functionality, both impressed our testing team for performing well in compact, well-designed and easy-to-operate forms.

The lower-cost choice will best serve DIYers looking for a basic tool to make measuring distances easier than with a standard tape measure. The tool can also be a supplemental device for quick measurements and layouts.

The higher-cost Bosch device will work well for serious DIYers with a lot to accomplish, as well as for professionals who are looking for a fast way to convert numerous measurements into complex calculations.

While we were hoping to find a Bosch laser tape measure that we could use outdoors at an affordable cost, that didn’t pan out for us.

Where to Buy a Bosch Laser Measure

Pros:

  • Measures distances up to 100 feet
  • Backlit displays are easy to read
  • Intuitive functions that are easy to use
  • Accuracy within 1/16-inch
  • Ultra-compact and user-friendly design
  • Rounding capabilities

Cons:

  • Bosch offers relatively short one and two-year warranties on many products

Bosch offers numerous laser measure tool choices, ranging in price from under $50 to over $250 for its top-of-the-line professional-grade model, the Bosch GLM400CL, which includes up to 400 feet of measuring accuracy, Bluetooth compatibility and a camera viewfinder. You can shop the Bosch GLM100-23 for under $50 on Amazon and the Bosch GLM50C for $85 at The Home Depot.

Utility boots have come a long way over the decades. Previously associated with being obnoxiously heavy and having an annoying steel plate that seemed destined to pierce through your foot rather than save it, gone are the days of lacklusterwork boots with only safety in mind.

Manufacturers have gone to great lengths to not only make them even safer but also more comfortable and, dare I say, attractive. Modern work boots claim to be safer, lighter and better fittingand can be worn all day. Could it possibly be true?

Keen Utility’s Evanston boot is one of those new-era utility boots that challenge misconceptions. I tried them to see if they could withstand my everyday tasks and meet industrial standards. I was thrilled with these boots, so read on to hear why.

What is the Keen Utility Evanston Work Boot?

Keen Utility designed the Evanston work boot to meet the needs of many professionals. However, I found it practical for any application where comfort and safety are paramount. Keen Utility states that the work boot is great for assembly line workers, electricians, the aerospace industry and light manufacturing.

The boots tick all the boxes for standard work boots, with safety and meeting standards being the highest priorities. Theyre a six-inch high waterproof boot suitable for many manufacturing and construction situations. Durable leather offers the wearer protection and makes the boots visually appealing.

Keen Utility Evanston Work Boot Features

The Keen Utility Evanston Work Boot stands out with a suite of high-performance features designed for durability and safety. This boot is not only oil, slip and heat resistant, but also boasts a carbon-fiber toe. This makes them a lighter alternative to traditional steel toes while maintaining robust protection. Rated for electrostatic discharge (ESD), the boot ensures safe use in environments where static electricity is a concern.

The boot’s six-inch ankle height provides essential protection and stability, a crucial aspect both industrial settings and demanding work environments. The heat-resistant outsole further enhances durability, allowing the boot to withstand high temperatures without compromising performance or comfort.

The Keen Utility Evanston is equipped with Keen.ReGEN technology, a proprietary sole designed to offer 50% more energy return compared to standard foam soles. This technology helps reduce fatigue and increases comfort during long hours on your feet. Additionally, the boot features a 90-degree heel (half an inch) that contributes to its stability and balance.

The eyelets are constructed from plastic rather than metal, minimizing the risk of marring highly finished surfacesa thoughtful detail for professionals working with delicate materials. The boots also have reflective elements for enhanced visibility in low-light conditions.

The leather used is barnyard resistant, meaning it effectively withstands the detrimental effects of common livestock-related hazards like oleic acid and urea.

Furthermore, the Leather Working Group certifies the leather as “environmentally preferred,” which ensures that the tanneries adhere to rigorous environmental standards, including waste management and greenhouse gas reduction.

As an extra bonus, the boots are PFA-free and contain no “forever chemicals.”

How We Tested the Keen Utility Evanston Work Boot

Fhma24 Keen Evanston Work Boot Pamela Bondurant Ssedit 01

The boots arrived by mail in terrific packaginga sturdyboot box that Ill be reusing. The boots were pre-laced and ready to use, so I put them on my feet around 8:30 a.m. As someone who dislikes wearing shoes and only wearsthem as a necessitysomething I equate to foot prisonI didnt even think to take these brand-new boots off my feet for almost 12 hours!

I wear a Euro size 39 with a narrow-to-normal width foot and received a U.S. womens 8.5 medium boot. The fit was perfect, and Keens signature roomy toe box was a welcome relief for my claustrophobic toes and the real or imagined widening of my foot as I age. The cushioned part around the ankle felt comfy and didnt give me that restrictive feeling I get when I revisit my early 90s hipster days and wear my heavy, black ankle boots.

I wasnt going to test the carbon fiber toe for safety as they did once on Myth Busters (anyone else see that episode?), but the toe was clearly fortified. I felt confident that my tootsies were in safe hands and opted out of dropping a toolbox on my foot. Another welcome surprise was that the composite toe was not even noticeable, even as my toes were bent, which is something Ive struggled with in other steel-toed boots.

I spent the remainder of the day doing various chores in these boots. I weeded, ran the string trimmer, cleaned gutters and dug up volunteer lemongrass that was invading my flower beds. I walked on grass, mud and mulch. I even took my daily multi-mile walk on asphalt in these boots because it didnt occur to me to change my shoes.

Keen Utility boasts that the heel design of these boots helps secure the foot in place on ladders. While climbing the ladder to clean my gutters, I felt absolutely confident. While digging with a shovel and on the ladder rungs, the sole’s sturdiness did not cause discomfort or fatigue. As the day went by, I was so very surprised that my ankles also did not feel any chafing or excessive pressure.

Pros:

  • Certified for safety standards and ESD
  • Comfortable
  • Lightweight
  • Environmentally preferred leather
  • Reflective
  • Chemical and biological resistant leather
  • Multiple widths

Cons:

  • No color selection for women
  • Limited sizes in both mens and womens styles

Why Trust Me

Ive been wearing work boots for most of my adult life. Ive lived and worked on an organic farm, worked as a land surveyor in many regulated environments, owned a landscaping company and done gobs of contracting work in painting and basic carpentry. Nothing makes my work easier than comfortable and practical footwear.

As a professional product reviewer, I am committed to considering my needs and those of others when evaluating products. The boots are no exception, and I considered many factors in order to give a fair assessment. I looked at both my personal needs and those of people of different sizes and in various industries.

FAQ

Fhma24 Keen Evanston Work Boot Pamela Bondurant Ssedit 02

Are Keen boots good for work?

There are many types of work boots that are certified for certain industrial uses and safety issues. Many Keen utility boots are approved for these uses and, therefore, are excellent work boots. Keen also has hiking boots and casual boots that may be suitable for certain work environments.

Are Keen shoes good for your feet?

Theyre certainly not bad for your feet! In fact, with the arch support, protection and roomy toe box, your feet are getting the royal treatment as far as footwear goes. Keen utility boots come with a 30-day trial, so if you find that they are not meeting your needs, you can return them.

Are Keen boots waterproof?

Some Keen boots are waterproof. The Evanston boot reviewed is rated as waterproof and is indicated for wet and dry use. If waterproof boots are a must, be sure to check the manufacturers stated uses and capabilities.

What Other Reviewers/Experts Had to Say

LaRita B. gives a5-star review onKeens site, saying, Wide enough!!!!! Yes, finally, Keen listened! These safety-toeboots are wide enough to fit my foot. Thanks, well done.

Vicki Rose, owner of SPC Specialty Products, a woman-owned business serving the manufacturing and energy sectors, says, I wear industrial boots daily for work. This boot meets all the safety requirements, looks good, and even comes in a womens 5, which is perfect for me.

Best boot ever, says Jade P on Keens site. I bought these off of a recommendation from a coworker. So comfortable, even without another insole! My blisters I got from my other boots went away, and because of the composite toe all my ankle pain is gone (because my old boots were too heavy). Seriously the best purchase Ive ever made.

Keens vs. Red Wings

Icompared these boots to a pair of Redwing steel-toed boots that I used to wear for work and found the Keens have far more support and cushioning. Thecarbon fiber toe was not even noticeable on the Keens, as opposed to the discomfort inflicted on my foot by the old-school steel toe.

I also compared the Keen to a newer pair of steel-toed Red Wings side-by-side and found the comfort and styling to be somewhat equal, but the Keen was significantly lighter.

Final Verdict

The extensive listing of safety ratings on this boot makes it viable for almost all work conditions. The wonderful support and comfort allow for all-day wearing without the need to break them in. Its stylish, too. I was unable to come up with really any criticisms of this boot, so I 100% recommend it. Theres nothing to risk thanks to Keen’s 30-day return period, so try out a pair for yourself.

Where to Buy

You can find Keen Utility’s Evanston boot on Amazon and Zappos for around $150. The sizing is accurate, and with Keens 30-day return policy, the risk of buying shoes online is minimized.

What Is Boucle Furniture The New Trend And What It Means For Your Home

Boucle furniture is upholstered with boucle fabric, a textured material made of looped yarn. The textile is soft, dense, and cozy, often described as having a “nubby” texture.

In part, boucle furniture’s popularity is due to its welcoming and warm appearance, which can add dimension to modern rooms. “Boucle’s cozy, inviting texture complements a range of design aesthetics, particularly mid-century modern, Scandinavian, and minimalist styles,” explains Natane Boudreau, interior designer and founder of Studio Boudreau. “It works well with neutral color palettes and organic shapes, offering a balance between visual interest and understated elegance.”

Traditionally made with wool yarn, fabric options are also more plentiful nowadays, with natural and synthetic boucle available.

What Makes Boucle Furniture Different?

Boucle is one of many textured upholstery fabrics that can add coziness to a piece of furniture. Its “nubbiness” is really what sets it apart. Knobby loops of material make it more textured than smoother fabrics like microfiber, chenille, or velvet. It looks somewhat similar to sherpa and sheepskin fabric, albeit less fluffy, which actually works to its advantage.

Boucle tends to be easier to clean than these plush materials. A major benefit of boucle is that it isn’t prone to matting either, a common complaint with sheepskin or sherpa furniture. This is part of why boucle furniture has a decent reputation for durability, too.

How Much Does Boucle Furniture Cost?

Boucle furniture isn’t cheap, but it’s not eye-wateringly expensive either. Its reputation leans more high-end and luxurious. However, its popularity means it’s available at a reasonable price range as budget retailers try to keep up with trends.

It’s possible to find some boucle sofas under $1000 from retailers like Amazon or Wayfair, but you’ll find a lot more boucle couches in the $1000 to $3000 price range. That’s about the price you can expect from retailers like West Elm, Pottery Barn, Crate & Barrel, and similar stores that sell trendy furniture.

As expected, the smaller the piece of furniture, the lower the price tends to skew. So, a boucle accent chair will often be more affordable than a boucle sofa.

If you want to incorporate the material on a budget, opt for accessories instead, which tend to be the most cost-friendly. Boucle ottomans, poufs, and cushions can come with a lower price tag but still bring that cozy visual interest.

Is Boucle Furniture Easy to Clean?

Boucle is not the easiest to clean, but that doesn’t mean you should shy away from the material. It’s not easy to wipe it down like with leather and vinyl couches. However, it won’t hold onto crumbs and dirt as much as fluffier fabrics. Expect something in between. The fabric is pretty sturdy and vacuuming can help remove debris from the textured weave.

Boucle can be carefully incorporated into homes with children or pets. As Boudreau notes, “While boucle is fairly durable, its textured surface can be challenging to clean, especially in households with young children or pets.” She suggests considering placing boucle furniture in lower-traffic areas or opting for pieces with removable, washable covers.

Pantea Bionki, owner and lead designer at Bionki Interiors echoes the fabric’s durability, and recommends dark colors in dirt- or stain-prone areas. “Boucl’s thicker weave and higher pile make it more durable, so it holds up well over time. Its texture also helps conceal dirt and wear, particularly in darker colors, making it a practical option for everyday use.”

Ease of cleaning can depend on material as well, so shop around according to your needs. Wool is naturally stain-resistant. Nowadays, there are durable synthetic options that are treated to be spill or stain-resistant. Some pieces, like couch and cushion covers, can also be washable.

Is Boucle Furniture Right for My Home?

If boucle furniture really catches your eye, you can find a way to use it in your home. It’s perfect if you’re looking for furniture that’s luxe and modern but also cozy and homey. Bionki notes, “Boucl furniture is an excellent choice for those seeking comfort, texture, and an organic feel in their homes. [It] complements modern and organic design aesthetics, adding an element of softness and warmth to any space.”

Boucle furniture comes in various types and styles. It’s also available in many colors, though neutrals tend to be most popular. Even its texture can vary in its knobbiness, so there are many ways to incorporate it into unique home styles.

Since it’s not the easiest to clean, homes with young children or pets might want to stay away from using boucle furniture in high-traffic areas. In particular, think about how pets might react to the texture. The nubby loops are likely to catch on claws, causing damage to the fabric. It can prove irresistible to some cats, so if you have a furniture scratcher, keep that in mind.

Boucle accessories can be a great alternative to furniture, especially if you love the fabric but don’t want to invest in a furniture piece that kids or pets may damage. You can still make a statement with an affordable boucle cushion, boucle curtains, or a cozy boucle rug.

A quick way to boost your curb appeal is to give your front door a makeover. The best way to paint a door will always be to take it off its hinges. However, if you’re feeling time-pressed or nervous about getting the door on and off its hingesyou can still successfully paint your exterior door while its on the hinges. It has kinda turned into a hack seen across social media. Since you’ll be working against gravity, you must pay extra attention to drips.

Prevent drips by using a foam roller when applying the paint uniformly, painting in thin coats, and using a drop cloth beneath the door. I recommend repairing any flaws on your door before painting for the best results, such as filling in cracks and holes. Remember that high gloss paints reveal imperfections more than other paints, such as semi-gloss or satin.

Before starting the project, you want to know what your exterior door is made of. Most exterior doors are wood, fiberglass, steel, and wood clad in aluminum. It’s important to note that certain paints and primers may adhere better to different types of door materials. If you’re unsure, it’s a good idea to consult with the professionals at your local paint store. I used a satin exterior enamel paint/primer and was very pleased with the results. It dried smoothly and quickly, so I didn’t have to wait around for hours to apply the next coat.

You might not have to do this extra step, but I had to paint the exterior door frame to match the door’s new color. This meant getting out the ladder and spending a bit more time painting. Also, dont skimp on painter’s tape; mistakes will show, especially on door frames. When picking out a new front door color, consider what would complement the other exterior colors of the home. If youre unsure, plenty of inspirational ideas are online, and some paint stores offer consultations.

How Does a DIY Solar Water Heater Work? https://www.familyhandyman.com/article/diy-solar-water-heater/ Tue, 13 Aug 2024 19:02:44 +0000 https://www.familyhandyman.com/?p=630269 If you like the idea of sun-powered electricity, you'll warm right up to the idea of residential solar water heaters. Here's what you need to know.

The post How Does a DIY Solar Water Heater Work? appeared first on Family Handyman.

]]>
The Department of Energy estimates that heating water accounts for 18 percent of a typical home’s energy usage, so if you could use the sun’s energy for this task, you could enjoy significant savings on your energy bill. That’s what a solar water heater does, and while it may look like a PV panel from the ground, it’s much easier to build and install.

Judging from the number of panels and storage tanks I saw on rooftops when I lived in Japan in the ’90s, homeowners in some other countries are more tuned into this energy-saving strategy than Americans. Al Ruggie of Phoenix-based ASAP Restoration laments: “For sure, we have never installed a solar hot water heater on a home for a client because we wouldn’t be able to warranty the unit since (as far as I know) they aren’t made by any single company that offers one. And (sadly, I’ll admit) despite being in Phoenix where it’s sunny year-round, I rarely see solar hot water heaters on local properties.”

The California property on which I live was off-grid when we moved in (it still is, but we’re working on that), and besides PV panels, it had a large solar water heating panel. It was homemade, too bulky and unwieldy to put on the roof, so we never used it. And that begs a caution for anyone considering a DIY solar water heater: Don’t forget to include hoisting it onto the roof, securing it against high winds and connecting it to your hot water supply as part of your overall plan.

What Is a Solar Water Heater?

A solar water heater heats water using the sun’s energy and circulates it into the household’s hot water supply. There are several ways to build one, but one of the most common is to construct a collector panel with an in-built network of tubing through which water can circulate. Cold water enters at one end, and water heated by radiation absorbed by the collector comes out the other.

Solar hot water systems of yesteryear were often leaky, failure-prone and ineffective (like our bulky panel), but the industry has matured. Today, you can choose between super-efficient, professionally installed collectors and less-expensive DIY-friendly solar hot water heater systems.

How Does a Solar Water Heater Work?

All solar water heaters have one feature in common: the ability to absorb heat from sunlight and transfer it into water. Systems differ, however, in the way they store and circulate water.

Passive systems rely on the thermosyphon effect the fact that hot water is less dense than cold water and tends to rise above it. These systems usually include a holding tank positioned above the solar collector (this is the type of system I often saw on Japanese rooftops). On a sunny day, water heated in the collector rises into the tank, and an outlet feeds the heated water into the building by the force of gravity.

Active systems circulate water using a mechanical pump, and there are two types:

  • A direct system circulates water into a holding tank in the building, which is usually just a standard tank-style water heater.
  • An indirect system circulates a heat-transfer fluid like ethylene glycol (anti-freeze) through a heat exchanger, which is simply a system of coils installed inside a water heater tank. The fluid exchanges heat with the water in the tank rather than heating the water directly. This type of system prevents water contamination and is better for colder climates because it resists freezing.

Will a Solar Water Heater Work for Your Home?

As with all things solar, the number-one prerequisite for a solar water heater is enough direct sunlight to make it work. If you have a sunny spot on your roof or property large enough to set one up (it doesn’t have to be on the roof), you can save energy by feeding heated water into your existing water heater or circulating it through your plumbing directly from a rooftop tank.

You can benefit even if you live in a cold climate because you can either install a freeze-proof heat-exchange system or a system you can drain in the winter when temperatures are below freezing.

How Much Does a Solar Water Heater Cost?

This depends on how much of it you DIY. If you build your own collector, install it yourself and hook it up to your existing water heater, the cost could be as low as $1,000, depending on the materials you use. The cost to purchase the components as a kit is between $1,500 and $6,000, and if you have the system professionally installed, add about $3,000.

Solar water heaters qualify for the Renewable Energy Tax Credit, a federal program that reimburses 30 percent of the cost of purchase and installation. In addition, some states and communities may provide additional incentives. To qualify, the system must be rated by the Solar Rating and Certification Corporation (SRCC) or a comparable entity, which may include some commercial DIY kits.

How To Make a DIY Solar Water Heater

As mentioned, the most common DIY solar water heater consists of a collector, a coil network, a cold water inlet and an outlet for hot water. Here’s a very basic outline of the procedure for building one:

  1. Build the collector box using lightweight plywood (1/4 to 3/8 inches thick) for the base and 1-by-4-inch cedar for the frame. Seal all joints with silicone caulk.
  2. Insulate the interior of the box with 1-inch foil-backed foam insulation with the foil facing outward.
  3. Construct a coil that fits snugly in the box using 3/4-inch copper tubing and elbow fittings. Maximize the number of turns in the coil to lengthen the path of water flowing through the collector.
  4. Extend one end of the coil through a bottom corner of the box for the cold water inlet and the other end through the diagonally opposite corner for the hot water outlet. Solder an adapter onto each end so you can attach a garden hose or plumbing pipe.
  5. Cover the collector box with glass and use silicone caulk to seal the edges and keep out rain.
  6. Mount the collector on the roof or the ground in a southerly direction to maximize solar exposure.
  7. Connect a cold water hose or supply pipe to the inlet and a hot water hose or pipe to the outlet. Run the hot water supply to a holding tank, which may be in the house or on the roof. The plumbing connections vary depending on the configuration.

Pros and Cons of Solar Water Heaters

Pros

  • Energy savings: You’re heating water for free. Whether you use it directly from a rooftop tank or use it to fill your water heater, you’ll save money.
  • Low maintenance: Once the system is up and running, you can basically forget about it. If you’re circulating a heat-transfer fluid, however, you may have to replace it periodically.
  • Eco-friendly: A solar water heater is an effective way to reduce dependence on fossil fuels for home heating.

Cons

  • Depends on the weather: A solar water heater won’t work on cloudy or rainy days or at night. Insulating the storage tanks helps mitigate this drawback.
  • Winterization: You need to prepare for freezing temperatures, either by using a heat-transfer fluid or draining the pipes and shutting down the system in the winter.
  • Cost: In general, a solar water heater costs significantly more than a conventional one, even if you build it yourself.

FAQ

How long does a solar water heater keep water warm?

In a properly insulated storage tank, water heated in a solar water heater during the day should stay hot overnight and possibly longer, depending on how much you use.

How much solar power do I need to run a solar water heater?

The amount of solar energy a solar water heater uses depends on a number of factors, including the amount of available sunlight, your water usage and the size of the collector panel. As a rule of thumb, plan on 10 square feet of panel space for each person in the household.

What’s the lifespan of solar water heaters?

A solar water heater can last from 10 to 25 years, although this depends on climate, the configuration of the system and the materials used to build it.

Do solar water heaters need a pump?

If a solar water heater’s storage tank isn’t mounted above the collector to take advantage of the thermosyphon effect, you need a pump to circulate water through the coil and into the tank. A solar-powered pump doesn’t use any extra energy, but if you plug a circulation pump into your electrical system, it will consume from 25 to 150 watts of power when it’s running.

How To Use a Chainsaw Safely https://www.familyhandyman.com/project/how-to-use-a-chainsaw/ Fri, 02 Aug 2024 15:17:57 +0000 https://www.familyhandyman.com/?post_type=project&p=620975 Ensure your safety while learning how to use a chainsaw. Follow our step-by-step instructions for proper chainsaw setup and operation.

The post How To Use a Chainsaw Safely appeared first on Family Handyman.

]]>

Chainsaws are excellent tools for cutting fallen trees and large branches. They are incredibly powerful and can cause severe injuries if used improperly. It is essential to be cautious while using a chainsaw and to follow all safety guidelines to prevent accidents. Remember that most accidents occur during the initial cut and the finish of the cut.

Most newer chainsaws come with safety features built into the chainsaw, which are beneficial but should never be considered a replacement for thorough training in chainsaw operation. Before starting the chainsaw, ensure you have all the necessary safety gear:

  • Safety gloves
  • Steel- or composite-toe boots
  • Hearing protection
  • Full face shield
  • Safety chaps
  • Safety helmet

Electric vs gas chainsaws

With various options available, including gas-powered and electric models, deciding which suits your needs can be overwhelming.

Gas chainsaws are known for their incredible power, making them capable of handling large-scale tasks such as cutting down trees and thick logs. They require regular maintenance, including fuel and oil, air filter cleaning, and spark plug replacements. Compared to electric chainsaws, gas chainsaws tend to be heavier and louder.

Electric chainsaws are lightweight, easy to start and require minimal maintenance. They are eco-friendly since they run on electricity but are typically less powerful than gas chainsaws. Depending on the model, battery-powered chainsaws may have limited runtime and require frequent recharging, or you’ll need to have additional batteries charged and ready to go.

A gas chainsaw would provide enough power if your work mainly involves large-scale tasks. For smaller projects around your home, the cutting capabilities of an electric chainsaw may suffice. If you’re a beginner or have limited physical strength, an electric chainsaw’s lightweight design and ease of use may be more appropriate.

Avoid chainsaw kickback

Always wrap the thumb of your left hand around the front handle while cutting. This encircling grip keeps the saw under control during a kickback. Cutting with the chain on the bottom of the bar is the most common and natural-feeling way to cut. Cutting with the bottom bar will pull the chainsaw towards the trunk. Cutting the underside of a trunk requires you to cut with the top of the bar, which is a little unnerving initially because the saw pushes toward you. But its safe if youre well-braced and follow all other precautions.

You should avoid a spot on the bar called the kickback zone, which is the top half of the bars tip. If the kickback zone comes in contact with something while the chain moves, the saw will kick up and back toward you. Modern chainsaws have a chain brake to stop the chain if a kickback occurs.

How To Use A Chainsaw Safely

I recommend taking the time to stand back and assess the situation. Think about how youll cut each branch and what will happen. Branches facing up will fall, so make sure the fall path is open. Even seasoned pros cant always predict how far the trunk will drop or whether the tree will roll. But you should always imagine the worst-case scenario and be prepared for it.

Preparation and inspection

Before using your chainsaw, ensure you have the proper safety gear and read the operator’s manual because each chainsaw is unique.

Inspect the chain to see if the blades are dull and need to be sharpened or replaced. A dull chain is unsafe and overworks the saw. If you dont know how to sharpen a chainsaw chain, you can purchase a new one from a hardware store or home center.

Rethreading Nuts and Bolts, a Guide https://www.familyhandyman.com/article/rethreading-nuts-and-bolts/ Thu, 01 Aug 2024 16:56:58 +0000 https://www.familyhandyman.com/?p=626648 A rethreading kit is an important part of any automotive toolbox. Use it to restore stripped threads on old, rusty nuts and bolts when you don't have time to search the stores for a replacement.

The post Rethreading Nuts and Bolts, a Guide appeared first on Family Handyman.

No matter how careful you are when you reinstall old rusty nuts and bolts, someday you’re going to strip some threads. Of course, it will happen on a critical bolt, on a Sunday night when all the stores are closed. That’s when a thread restoration kit pays for itself. You’ll be done rethreading your bolts faster than if you’d gone to the store. And you’ll have saved yourself the frustration of trying to match up specialty bolts.

Rethreading Nuts And Bolts A Guide

What Is a Thread Restoration Kit?

A full set (metric and SAE) will quickly put irreplaceable and hard-to-find nuts and bolts back into service. The rethreading tools look like traditional taps and dies. But instead of cutting new threads, they reshape them to original condition.

Rethreading Nuts And Bolts A Guide

How to Rethread Nuts and Bolts

To restore bolt threads, follow these steps:

  • Start by finding the thread count (SAE) or pitch (metric).
  • Hold the thread file against the bolt threads until you find the size that matches.
  • Clamp the bolt in a vise, engage the thread file grooves with the bolt threads and push the file.
    • Note: This resets the threads enough so you can screw on a rethreading die. Be sure to apply a few drops of oil first and then screw on the die.

Rethreading Nuts And Bolts, A Guide

To clean rusty or stripped nuts and bolts, follow these steps:

  • Grab a rethreading tap from the kit to restore threads on nuts or threaded engine component holes.
  • To begin, insert the rethreading tap or die and rotate a few turns, then back it off a full turn. This will dislodge the debris from the teeth.

Rethreading Nuts And Bolts A Guide

Don’t try to rethread the entire bolt, hole or nut in one operation. Go slowly so you don’t force things and damage the bolt you’re trying to fix. A little patience will pay off; it will still be faster than searching for a new one at the store, and it’s a skill that is handy to have in your back pocket regardless.
