Eco-Friendly

Depending on the model you choose, the Avocado mattress topper is made with either GOLS and FSC-certified organic Dunlop latex or FSC-certified Pure Talalay latex. The Avocado mattress topper has been granted multiple certifications. It’s Made Safe Certified, Oeko-Tex Standard 100 Certified, Greenguard Gold Certified and Formaldehyde-Free Claim Verified by UL Environment. Removable Cover

This topper has a GOTS-certified organic cotton cover with a hidden underside zipper. It can be removed, though the brand recommends spot cleaning only. If your cover starts looking shabby, you can purchase a replacement.

Flippable

Avocado recommends rotating and fluffing the mattress topper on a regular basis to help retain its loft. It can also be flipped.

How We Tested It

Our tester,Spencer Kildare, is a side sleeper who appreciates extra support and pressure relief. Especially since he’s been sleeping on the same spring mattress for 16 years. My mattress is very old and worn in. Its probably not the best to sleep on, but I have gotten accustomed to it, he explains. My sleep quality isnt the best, and I sometimes feel like Im 60% to 90% rested.

In hopes of improving his sleep quality, Spencer ordered the 3-inch Talalay latex topper. It costs between $45 and $72 more depending on the size, but it is softer and more plush than the Dunlop latex used in the 2-inch topper. The plush Talalay topper is designed to contour and alleviate shoulder and hip pain, making it ideal for side and combination sleepers like Spencer.

TheAvocado mattress topper arrived in a single box that Kildare could lift and move on his own. The topper itself was folded and wrapped in plastic. According to Kildare, it took a grand total of three minutes to get this mattress topper out of the box and centered on his bed. He did notice a factory smell, which he said was reminiscent of vanilla cake. He notes that the smell isnt bad, but the topper needs a week or more to completely off-gas.

Spencer tested a handful of mattress toppers over the course of several weeks. The Avocado mattress topper was the final topper he tested and it stood out among the rest. “It was the most different, in terms of construction, that I slept on,” he says. “It really has a cakey sort of feel and it mushes when pressure is applied. It provided excellent support to my sides without applying excess pressure.”

After sleeping on this mattress topper for five nights and a handful of mid-day naps, Spencer found that he loved the overall quality and spongey nature of the foam filling. His sleep quality drastically improved and he found himself waking up fully rested more often than not.

Though Spencer gave this topper five stars for comfort and support, he wishes it had corner straps to keep it from moving around on his bed. Straps! Somebody get this mattress topper some straps, he quips. This is a great topper, but those straps are important. Rather than corner straps, this topper relies on well-fitted sheets to keep it in place. Treat yourself to a set of Boll & Branch sheets to keep this topper in place.

Overall, Kildare recommends the Avocado mattress topper to anyone who tends to wake up feeling stiff or sore. It starts at just $199, and given its comfort and quality, your only regret will be that you didn’t buy it sooner.

We’ve spent countless hours testing some of the best mattresses on the market from brands like Helix, Saatva and Purple. We’ve also tested the best mattress protectors, sheets and toppers. After thoroughly researching the best mattress toppers, we sent the Avocado mattress topper to Spencer Kildare for testing. He put this topper on his 16-year-old mattress and slept on it for five consecutive nights along with a handful of afternoon naps.

During that time, he focused on its overall comfort and performance. He also considered how easy it was to unpack and place on the bed, whether or not it had any odors and its overall value. This is a mattress topper of excellent quality, he concludes. The soft cover of the topper adds to the spongey nature of the foam filling, and the covering is the most cloth-like of the bunch.

A new mattress is one of the best investments you can make if you’re looking to prioritize your sleep. Luckily, shopping for a mattress is now easier than ever, with dozens of options that can be purchased online and delivered right to your door. The Avocado Green mattress is one of the best mattresses in a box.

This organic, non-toxic mattress is so supportive that it’s earned the endorsement of the American Chiropractic Association. In order to see if the Avocado Green mattress lives up to the hype, we tested it for two months. Here’s everything you need to know before ordering one for yourself.

What is the Avocado Green Mattress?

The Avocado Green mattress is a mattress made of Global Organic Latex Standard (GOLS)-certified organic latex and Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS)-certified organic wool and cotton, plus up to 1,379 individually wrapped support coils. The coils are arranged in seven strategic zones to support your hips, back and shoulders. Each mattress also has a reinforced steel perimeter for consistent edge support.

Every Avocado Green mattress is free of potentially toxic foams, chemical fire retardants and off-gassing materials. They are Oeko-Tex Standard 100 certified and repeatedly screened against known and suspected harmful chemicals including formaldehyde and per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS).

Zoned support, a combination of coils and latex foam and edge support ensure a restful night's sleep.

Avocado Green Mattress Features

Three Firmness Levels

The Avocado Green mattress is available in three firmness levels: firm, medium and plush.

Firm: The firm mattress is made with 3 inches of GOTS-certified organic Dunlop latex. It has an 11-inch profile and is generally considered to be the best choice for back and stomach sleepers.

Medium: The medium mattress has 5 total inches of supportive GOTS-certified organic Dunlop latex. It also has an attached pillow-top which adds another 2 inches of GOTS-certified organic Dunlop latex. This mattress has a 13-inch profile and is recommended for side, back and combination sleepers. A medium-feel Avocado Green mattress costs anywhere from $595 to $850 more than a firm mattress.

Plush: The Avocado Green plush mattress scores a 4 out of 10 on the firmness scale thanks to its 6 inches of natural latex rubber foam and attached 3-inch box top. The box top, which is ideal for side sleepers, is made using soft Forest Stewardship Council (FSC)-certified Pure Talalay latex. It is constructed with mohair, wool and silk for an extra luxe feel. The plush mattress features an impressive 15.5-inch profile and costs an additional $1,275 to $1,445 depending on the size.

Avocado Green Mattress

Back Support

Every Avocado Green mattress has up to 1,379 steel coils. Each coil is individually encased in fabric pockets and arranged in multiple gauges and seven ergonomic zones. This reduces motion transfer, keeps your back aligned, relieves pain, distributes weight more evenly, alleviates pressure points and contours to your bodys natural curves.

Naturally Cooling

According to the brand’s website, organic materials like wool and latex promote air circulation and moisture wicking without retaining heat, while the ergonomic coils ensure adequate airflow. Avocado does not use any special cooling fabric or chemicals.

Edge Support

The Avocado Green mattress has reinforced edging around the perimeter of the mattress, helping it to maintain its structure and provide support without sinking or compressing along the edges.

How We Tested It

Delivery and Unboxing

Our tester, Nancy Snyder, opted to test a queen size, firm mattress atop the Avocado Malibu Platform Bed Frame. The mattress arrived at her door in a tall and very heavy box that Snyder was unable to lift and move on her own. Luckily, she was able to recruit some help and brought the box into her guest bedroom to set it up. “Unboxing was incredibly easy and Avocado has aninstructional video to guide you every step of the way,” she explains.

Snyder points out that Avocado recommends giving it a full day to expand before sleeping on it. However, she found that it only took about 30 minutes for the mattress to fully expand. She was also pleased to discover that there were no odors or off-gassing. And though there were some wrinkles present on the mattress, they disappeared within a few days. When asked for her initial thoughts on the Avocado Green mattress, Snyder had only good things to say. “This is one beautiful mattress,” she raves. “And the four straps there are two on each side are extremely helpful for moving it.” And it wasn’t just the aesthetics of this mattress that impressed Snyder.

Avocado Green Mattress

“This was my first experience with a box mattress and I was pleasantly surprised at the quality and comfort,” she says. “The mattress feels firm andplush all at once! It is extremely comfortable to lay on, adding just the right amount of support while still feeling luxurious like a cloud.”

Snyder also noticed that the mattress was cool to the touch. “I wondered if this would last after the bed was made, and was pleasantly surprised to find that it did remain cool (or at the very least, neutral), which proved very refreshing given the extended warm temps we have been experiencing in Phoenix.”

Sleep Testing

Although she set this bed up in her guest room, Snyder slept on it multiple times over the course of two months. She describes her nights on the Avocado Green mattress as restful and comparable to a five-star hotel. And while the firm mattress is recommended for back and stomach sleepers, she was quite comfortable sleeping on her side. “It wasn’t just ‘comfortable for a box mattress,’ says Snyder. “This might actually be one of the most comfortable beds I’ve ever laid on. Our only regret? Getting this for the guest bedroom, as it was more comfortable than our main bedroom mattress!”

The only thing Snyder didn’t love about this mattress was the motion transfer. Though the brand claims that the coils reduce motion transfer, Snyder was able to feel her dog’s every move. “I could easily feel my dog jumping up and moving around on the bed beside me, and many other reviewers noted that they could easily feel every movement from their partner,” she explains. “But while this is important for some, it may not be a deal breaker for others.”

Pros

  • Comfortable and supportive
  • Cool to the touch
  • High-quality look and feel
  • No odors or off-gassing
  • Available in three firmness levels
  • Made with organic materials
  • Easy to setup
  • Free shipping

Cons

  • Expensive
  • Doesn’t eliminate motion transfer

AtFamily Handyman, our team of editors and testers are always excited to try new products. We especially love testing products that enhance the quality of our sleep, since a good night’s rest is fundamental to a good day. We sent this mattress to Phoenix resident Nancy Snyder, who slept on it for two months. During that time, she focused on its overall comfort and performance. She also considered how easy it was to unpack, whether or not it had any odors and its overall value. “My nights were restful, similar to that of a five-star hotel,” raves Snyder. “And I love that it’s organic as it makes sense that the place you rest your head every night be made with natural materials.”

FAQ

How long do avocado green mattresses last?

The Avocado Green mattress is designed to last 25 years. It even comes with a comes with a 25-year limited warranty.

Can you flip an Avocado Green Mattress?

No. According to the brand’s website, the Avocado logo should always be right side up. That said, they do recommend rotating your mattress once a month to ensure the top wool layers compress evenly.

Does Avocado Mattress have formaldehyde?

No. Every finished Avocado Green mattress is Formaldehyde-Free Claim Verified by UL Environment.

What Other Reviewers Had to Say

From over 18,940 reviews, the Avocado Green mattress has earned an average of 4.6 out of five stars.

“We’ve had our mattress for 4 weeks and it is terrific. It’s very comfortable and easy to unpack,” writes verified buyer Natalie L. “We just got an email notification that it is time to spin the mattress 180 degrees (top to bottom — you do that for the first 6 months). Spinning it is easy and it never needs to be flipped, so that is a huge plus!”

Five-star reviewer William W. bought this mattress after reading about it in Consumer Reports and he’s glad he did! “I bought this mattress because of how it was rated in Consumer Reports,” he writes. “The mattress is as firm as it said it would be and for me that is very comfortable. Ive had it for a month now and so far everything is perfect. I did rotate it like it said to do. I started out with a little back problem with it, but after a few days that went away and its now super comfortable. It’s a great mattress and I think Ill be very happy with it. Oh, one more thing. Its extremely heavy.”

And Kristen S. is glad that all of her research led her to Avocado. “I am writing this review bc I read literally hundreds of reviews before buying a mattress and was so overwhelmed! We have a king size Avocado Green mattress with the pillow top. We love it. It is as comfortable, if not more so, than the Stearns and Foster we were replacing,” she writes.

“The materials are high quality, and I am happy that they are organic and that Avocado is so transparent about what is in the mattress and where it comes from. The mattress is soft but firm — kind of like Stearns and Foster’s ‘cushion firm’ but without the toxic materials,” Kristen S. continues. “We sleep trialed a Naturepedic Concerto mattress before this Avocado and it was like a marshmallow, very squishy with little support (it was sent back). Anyhow, both my husband and I love the Avocado pillow top. It’s super comfortable and supportive. And we haven’t noticed any smell like other reviews have stated, whereas the Naturepedic smelled overwhelmingly of latex.”

Avocado Green vs. Silk & Snow

The Avocado Green mattress and the Silk & Snow mattress are boxed mattresses made of organic materials. Both mattresses have a combination of latex foam and coils and are offered in six sizes and three firmness levels. They’re also similarly priced. The Avocado Green mattress is hand crafted in Los Angeles and costs between $1,399 to $4,399. The Silk & Snow mattress is made in Canada and ranges from $1,300 to $3,100.

We tested both mattresses and found that the Silk & Snow’s latex was firmer than we would have liked. Additionally, our tester found that it held its shape versus cocooning her body. And while that may be okay for some, it may be a tad too firm for others. We also found that the Silk & Snow didn’t quite fit our tester’s queen-sized bed frame corner to corner. “You get a peek-a-boo view of the wooden slats of the bed frame if you look closely, even though the mattress is queen-sized,” writes Sabrina Tillman in her full review.

Final Verdict

“My particular mattress is $1999 which I think is extremely worth it,” says Snyder. “You can’t put a price on cool, restful sleep that mimics the comfort and luxury of a 5-star hotel bed combined with safe and natural organic materials.”

The post Happsy Mattress Review: This Organic Mattress Changed the Way I Sleep appeared first on Family Handyman.

]]>
As I get older, my sleep woes have increased, from tossing and turning to insomnia and wake-ups due to overheating. This year, I added shoulder and neck pain to the list. My first thought was that my morning aches were due to my aging mattress (it had exceeded its expectancy by five years), but first, I tried other remedies. I used white noise apps and blue light glasses. Then, thinking my pillow must cause pain, I upgraded to a latex pillow with a higher loft that didn’t settle like a down-filled pillow. None of those changes did the trick, so I came back to thinking it must be my conventional mattress, which was way past its prime and no longer providing the support it did years ago.

With so many mattress and mattress topper options on the market, I first needed to narrow the possibilities by listing my priorities. Because I’m concerned about chemicals and sensitive to odors, I focused on organic mattresses. Within the nontoxic mattress lineup, I wanted a Goldilocks optionnot too springy and soft, but with firm support, the right amount of pressure relief and a lush top. Simply put, I wanted a mattress that slept like a dream and that I could happily sleep on for many years. The Happsy Organic Latex Hybrid Mattresschecked all those boxes, so I tested it.

Here is what I learned through the course of unboxing and sleeping on the Happsy, plus which sleepers I recommend this mattress for. Spoiler alert: I can’t believe I didn’t make this switch years ago!

What is the Happsy mattress?

A bedroom features a large bed with a light-colored mattress and a dark wood frame. There are tree-patterned wallpaper, two hanging pendant lights, and a white nightstand with wicker baskets on the left. Blue patterned curtains adorn the window on the right.

Happsy is an online bedding brand that debuted its certified organic natural latex hybrid model in May 2017. Their organic mattress is made with a hybrid design featuring two inches of natural latex for pressure point relief and pocket springs that reduce motion transfer, so you don’t feel the flip-flop acrobatics of a partner while trying to catch your z’s.

Latex has some bounce to it, unlike the sinking feeling of memory foam, and instead of trapping heat as memory foam does, latex allows heat to escape. Latex is also built to last. “All-natural latex mattresses have been known to last for up to 25 years (with 15 years being quite common),” says Derek Hales, founder of NapLab. “Most mattresses may only last 8 to 10 years, so having a mattress with the incredible durability and longevity that latex provides is quite rare.”

A big selling point for me is that these mattresses are free from chemicals such as glue, adhesives, and flame retardants (conventional mattresses can have up to 10 pounds of glue in them). Along with natural latex in the comfort layer, the Happsy mattress is made of certified organic cotton and wool in the cover fabric, batting, and filling. The mattresses have been awarded certifications for using organic materials, meeting strict emissions standards, using fair-trade practices, and prioritizing overall sustainability. Despite being handcrafted in the United States with certified organic materials, this mattress is one of the most budget-friendly organic mattresses. As a bed-in-a-box, Happsy ships straight to your door, and shipping is free.

The outside covering of the Happsy mattress is certified nontoxic and organic by Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS), meaning it’s free of harmful allergenic materials and odors. Next is a comfort layer of two inches of Global Organic Latex Standard (GOLS)-certified organic natural latex. Natural latex is a resin extracted from the sap of the rubber tree. Organic latex is expensive, but that extra cost adds value.

The support core consists of eight inches of individually pocketed coils sewn together. The coils help reduce jostling and minimize motion transfer for a more peaceful and comfortable sleep. The coil gauge determines the firmness of the mattress. Happy offers two designs: medium-firm and plush. The medium-firm design has 15-1/2-gauge coils in the center, with 14-1/2-gauge around the perimeter for edge support. The plush design has alternating 15- and 16-gauge coils. The higher the gauge, the softer the mattress.

Happsy comes with a 120-night sleep trial. You can return the mattress anytime during the trial and receive a full refund. Happsy will arrange for the mattress to be picked up from your residence at no extra charge. The bed will either be recycled or donated to charity. Happsy recommends you hold onto the wrapping and the box until you know you’ll keep the mattress to make the return trip easier for all involved.

Product Features: Why Choose an Organic Mattress?

Close-up of a cream-colored, quilted mattress with an orange "Happsy" label on the side. The mattress features a textured, circular pattern on the surface and rests on a dark base.

What’s so special about an organic mattress? “Organic mattresses are naturally hypoallergenic, making them great for those with allergies or sensitive skin. They emit fewer chemicals,” says Marten Carlson, mattress expert and certified sleep science coach at Mattress Clarity. Carlson adds that organic materials are also more breathable than synthetic ones. “Even if you don’t have sensitive skin or allergies, organic mattresses offer cooling properties for all types of sleepers,” he says.

Kelly Murray, an adult sleep coach, adds that organic mattresses create a healthier sleep environment by eliminating the use of harmful chemicals. Traditional mattresses often contain harmful substances, including polyurethane, VOCs, PFAS, fiberglass, and flame retardants. “These chemicals can off-gas and be inhaled during sleep, which causes the body to become inflamed,” says Murray. “Inflammation triggers cortisol, an anti-inflammatory hormone, to be released in the body in an effort to fight the inflammation. Cortisol is also the ‘alert hormone’ that keeps us awake and is responsible for our fight-or-flight response. As a result, this anti-inflammatory response triggers night wakings, leading to a poor night’s sleep.”

Themattress is known for its chemical and organic materials, with certifications supporting their claims. Here is a breakdown of what each certification means and why it’s important:

  • Global Organic Latex Standard (GOLS) certifies that a mattress is produced with at least 95% organic latex and ensures there’s minimal environmental impact; it also ensures positive social impact, such as fair working practices and wages throughout the supply chain.
  • Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) certifies that textiles follow organic production processes such as spinning, knitting, and weaving.
  • GREENGUARD is a third-party testing program that measures chemical emissions from consumer products.
  • Organic Content Standard 100 (OCS) certification demonstrates that the organic fiber in Happsy products has been independently verified. OCS only accepts material from certified organic farms and tracks the chain of custody from the material’s source to the finished product.

How I Tested the Happsy Mattress

A rolled-up mattress wrapped in white fabric and brown paper is placed inside a cardboard box.

When the Happsy mattress-in-a-box arrived at my doorstep, I was eager to see how the hybrid mattress would perform. Let me start by walking you through the unboxing process.

The mattress came compressed, plastic-wrapped, and rolled up inside a tall delivery box. The box is heavy, weighing in at 126 pounds for the king-size mattress. Be sure to plan where you are going to put the mattress before unboxing. The mattress can be hard to move, especially without handles on the sides, which makes it challenging to rotate or relocate the mattress. I recommend having a helping hand when moving the mattress to the room you plan to use, especially since it comes without handles. My workaround? Use ratchet straps to create a grip and position the mattress.

Once I got the mattress unpacked and onto my bed frame, I carefully cut away the plastic wrapping. To my delight, the mattress expanded quickly, taking shape before my eyes. The directions mentioned that the mattress would take full shape in 48 hours or less, but it only took a few minutes for me.

One thing that immediately stood out was the absence of any off-gassing smell. As someone with a strong sensitivity to chemical odors and who prioritizes a healthy sleep environment, I was pleased to find that the Happsy mattress lived up to its promise of being free from harmful chemicals and odors.

I’m a tosser-turner, so I need a mattress that can handle all the sleep positions. After a few weeks on the Happsy, I found the medium-firm feel just right for most of my sleep positions but too firm for side sleeping. I needed more softness for my hips and shoulders, so I ordered the optional mattress topper. It gave the mattress two additional inches of soft plushness, with a supportive foundation underneath.

I was concerned about ordering a mattress topper that was not attached to the mattress but was pleasantly surprised to see that it barely shifted position, and it had an added benefitI can easily replace the mattress top (flashback to the time my foster pup had an accident on my new mattress!).

My sleep quality greatly improved during the testing period, and there was virtually no adjustment period once I added the mattress topper. In fact, I was thrilled to discover I wasn’t waking up throughout the night anymore due to overheating or feeling like I was sinking into the mattress.

Why You Should Trust Us

Despite being someone whose favorite pastimes include naps, I am a terrible sleeper. Over the years, I have tested mattresses with a mission to get a better night’s sleep. I’ve evaluated this mattress for feel, firmness, pressure relief, bounce and motion isolation. The mattress I tested is the medium-firm model with an optional topper, but it is also available in a plush design.

I also enlisted the expertise of Nichole Mondshein, sleep product expert at Sleepopolis; Marten Carlson, mattress expert and certified sleep science coach at Mattress Clarity; Kelly Murray, adult sleep coach; and Jill Zwarensteyn, certified sleep science coach at Sleep Advisor. I consulted with Derek Hales, founder and CEO at NapLab. In the past 10 years, he has personally tested 360+ different mattresses.

At Family Handyman, we’re familiar with mattress reviews. We’ve tested everything from the affordable DreamCloud Mattressto the cooling Sealy Cocoon Chilland the Classic Saatva mattresses. We add to our reviews often, assessing whether a new sleep product on the market is worth your time.

FAQ

Is Happsy good for side sleepers?

Latex hybrids are a smart choice for side sleepers because the latex can contour to shoulders and support some weight. The latex-coil combination is also a smart choice for anyone who gets too hot while sleeping. The latex, wool, and cotton are all naturally breathable, and the coil layers also dissipate heat.

Side sleepers generally gravitate toward softer mattresses, which provide deep pressure relief for hips and shoulders. I found the medium-firm mattress provided excellent support and pressure release for my back and stomach sleeping positions, but I found it too firm for side sleeping. I needed a bit of extra cushioning that the mattress topper addition provided. The pocket coils enhance airflow and support for side sleepers.

An additional two-inch latex layer with the optional topper will give you a more plush feel and more contouring for your shoulders and hips if you need it. “A medium-soft to medium-firm mattress is usually best for side sleepers, says Jill Zwarenteyn, certified sleep science coach at Sleep Advisor. “You want something that cushions your hips and shoulders while still supporting your spine. Hybrid mattresses tend to work well since they contour to your body.”

Nichole Mondschein, sleep product expert at Sleepopolis, adds, “Hybrid mattresses are a great option because they have structured support, combined with latex for comfortable cushioning on the hips and shoulders.”

Where is the Happsy mattress manufactured?

According to the manufacturer’s website, Happsy mattresses are manufactured and packaged in their own certified organic factory in the USA, which is used exclusively for organic mattress production, so there is no chance of contamination.

What Other Reviewers Had to Say

Across the different sites where this hybrid organic mattress is available, most customers have come to the same conclusion: They are happy with their Happsy! The mattress has nearly 2,185 customer reviews and a 4.5-star rating on the manufacturer’s website.

Verified reviewer Eliana says, “The mattress came with no smell at all, which is impressive for a mattress (and as someone who is very sensitive to mattress smells).”

Reviewer Klawdya is sensitive to chemical smells and raved, “This arrived with NO ODOR AT ALL. I’m chemically sensitive and I usually have to wash new products immediately and then put the products far from my bedroom for a few days and wash them again with a vinegar rinse and/or baking soda. This was perfectly non-toxic! I’m so happy with this company.”

Amazon reviewer Lillian Garcia says, “From the first night it was great! Now two months later, I am so happy with my mattress. It’s really comfortable and supports my body in all the right places. Great buy!”

Sorcha was searching for a nontoxic mattress when she found Happsy. “Reading about the toxic off-gassing of regular mattresses was a wake-up call. I didn’t just want a comfortable mattress; I wanted one that didn’t contain formaldehyde and other toxic materials. I’m happy I decided that I deserve a comfortable, safe mattress.”

And verified purchaser Lily says, “This mattress is supportive, but not firm, and the pillow top is very soft, but not squishy. It’s the perfect blend. To us, it’s more comfortable than a conventional mattress and box spring, minus all the smell and toxins! We were nervous about ordering, but were so pleasantly surprised when we opened it up. We also purchased the Happsy foundation, because our bed frame needed it for height, and it’s fantastic as well. Very sturdy, very well-built. Extremely happy with our Happsy!”

Happsy Organic Mattress vs. Silk & Snow Organic Mattress

Both mattresses are designed with certified organic materials, a breathable sleep surface and a pocketed coil support system. The Happsy lacks zoned support, while the Silk & Snow Organic Mattress does, with a combination of soft coils on the outer thirds and firmer coils on the middle thirds.

If you want a firmer mattress with stronger edge support and can stretch your budget, the Happsy may be a better fit. However, if you’re looking for a slightly more affordable option with multiple firmness levels (firm, medium-firm, plush), Silk & Snow may be a more suitable option, especially for different sleeper preferences.

Final Verdict

Much to my surprise, my allergies greatly improved while sleeping on the Happsy, which is hypoallergenic and dust mite resistant. The organic wool and latex naturally repel dust mites, mold and other allergens, making it a great option for people like me with dust mite allergies or asthma.

I am seriously impressed with this mattress’s comfort performance. While I felt incredibly supported, the mattress still provided cloud-like comfort. The biggest bonus: my neck and shoulder pain went away! If you prefer not to sink into the mattress, you’ll definitely want to consider this mattress.

Helix, one of the most awarded mattress brands on the internet, launched a line of eco-friendly mattresses just a few years ago. Birch by Helix Sleep uses natural and organic materials like wool, latex and cotton to construct medium-firm mattresses, which are great for pressure relief. Birch mattresses are handmade in Phoenix, Arizona and they are Greenguard Gold Certified, so you can trust that the Birch mattress you lay your head on is made responsibly and with care.

After reading countless consumer reviews raving about Birch mattresses, we knew we had to do some testing of our own. So, we sent the Birch Natural Mattress to Richard Glenn, who tested the mattress every night for a month. Here are his honest, unfiltered thoughts about the mattress.

What is the Birch Natural Mattress?

The Birch Natural Mattress is a hybrid mattress composed of natural and organic materials. Its hybrid design means it has plush layers of wool, cotton and latex for comfort and supportive coils underneath. A hybrid mattress is great for various sleepers and sleeping positionsincluding side sleepersbecause it combines the best of a soft and firm mattress. This hybrid construction also achieves a medium-firm feel for people who like a middle-of-the-road mattress in terms of firmness.

Birch mattresses pass rigorous tests to achieve the highest standards for natural and organic products. The Birch Natural Mattress is Greenguard Gold, GOTS, Eco-Institute and Fair Trade Certified. Birchs partners also adhere to strict ethical practices and responsibly source all organic and natural components.

Pros:

  • Well-built; we expect it to last for many years after testing
  • Hybrid design with coils and comfort layers (no memory foam)
  • Good for hot sleepers and those with joint pain
  • Ideal for back, stomach and side sleepers
  • Hassle-free delivery
  • Non-toxic, organic and natural materials
  • Cooling properties

Cons:

  • Bottom edge lacks support
  • Pillows are thin and flimsy
  • Contains latex, so it is not suitable for those with latex allergies

Birch Natural Mattress Product Features

Birch Natural Mattress

Cooling Layers

The six-layer mattress is topped with a layer of breathable, organic cotton, which wicks moisture and promotes airflow. Underneath the cotton lie absorbent organic wool and breathable latex, further promoting a cool nights sleep.

Pressure Relief

With a medium-firm feel, thanks to its supportive bottom coils and layers of natural, breathable materials, this is an optimal mattress for side, back and stomach sleepers. The mattress is made with premium hypoallergenic natural materials, like sap from rubber trees, to create the right pressure relief and contour for your body.

Supportive Feel

The base of the Birch Natural Mattress has up to 1,000 individually wrapped coils. These coils provide reinforced support under your hips and cradle your body while helping to align your spine. The mattress is also reinforced lengthwise to provide edge support.

Hassle-Free Setup

When you order a Birch mattress, the delivery team will unpack your new bed and set it up in your desired location. Theyll also remove your old mattress and dispose of the packaging. This way, you dont have to worry about hauling in a heavy mattress on your own or getting rid of your old one ahead of delivery.

How We Tested It

Here are our honest thoughts after a full month of sleep testing on the Birch Natural Mattress.

Delivery and Setup

Our product tester, Richard Glenn, did not opt for the in-home delivery and setup service. Instead, he flipped the boxed mattress end over end up a flight of stairs to his bedroom. From there, he could unbox it and cut away the plastic. It was very securely wrapped. I used small scissors to cut away the outer plastic, Richard says. It was a little tough to get through, but I didnt want to use a box cutter for fear of damaging the mattress.

The mattress took a full 48 hours to expand and feel firm enough to sleep on, which is something you may want to consider if you have your current bed removed for an upgrade to the Birch Natural Mattress. I slept on it before it was fully inflated, and it seemed squishy, Richard says. 24 hours later, it came to its full firmness and felt much more supportive.

The mattress took about three hours to move from box to bed, unbox and set up. Two pillows were also included in the box. Impressively, there was no chemical smell or off-gassing upon opening.

Birch Natural Mattress in packaging with two pillows

One thing Richard did note about delivery was that the hand holes in the box arrived damaged, making the box challenging to lift. Thats why I had to flip it up the stairs, Richard explains. I recommend having a second person help you lift the box if you opt out of the in-home service. The brand could stand to reinforce the handholds in the box.

Sleep Experience

On his old memory foam mattress, Richard regularly woke up with hip pain. However, after sleeping on the new Birch Natural Mattress, Richard hasnt been bothered by joint pain like he was previously. Its not a cure-all, but its good enough that I dont even think about waking up achy, he says. When I do sleep on my back, I dont have any lower back pain because of the support from the mattress.

When it came time to test the mattress’s cooling features, Richard says it stayed consistently cool and did not reflect heat to his body like his old Tempur-Pedic mattress.

The medium firmness is a great balance between support and comfort, Richard says. Interestingly, the mattress feels much softer when sitting upright, but laying down with your body weight distributed, it feels much firmer.

Id recommend the Birch Natural Mattress to anyone with joint pain. It has the support of a spring bed without sacrificing comfort, Richard says. If youve been sleeping on memory foam and wake up sweaty, this mattress (made without memory foam) is worth trying.

Looking for alternatives? We tested nine other options to find the best mattress in a box.

Why You Should Trust Us

We know how difficult it can be to shop for beds online without sleeping on them first. Thats why we tested the Birch Natural Mattress every night for a month. Our product tester, Richard Glenn, suffers from hip and joint pain; hes also a hot sleeper who lives in Southern California. Thats to say, he was the perfect candidate to test the Birch mattresss pressure-relieving and cooling features. From delivery and setup to sleep, Richard put the Birch mattress through a series of rigorous tests to tell you what the mattress is really like in person.

FAQ

Does a birch mattress have fiberglass?

No. Birch mattresses are made without the use of fiberglass.

Who is the parent company of Birch mattress?

Helix Sleep, one of the most awarded mattress brands on the internet, launched Birch by Helix, a line of eco-friendly mattresses just a few years ago.

Do Birch mattresses have springs?

Yes. They have individually wrapped coils that provide support and help reduce motion transfer.

What Other Reviewers Had to Say

The Birch Natural Mattress has garnered more than 5,000 reviews on the Birch site and a 4.5-star rating. Buyers love the medium-feel firmness and the overall quality of the mattress. Complaints often have to do with the quality of pillows, wait time for inflation and customer service. A few reviewers note that the mattress seems to run on the smaller side compared to standard-size mattresses.

Comparison of Birch Natural Mattresses

Birch sells two Natural Mattresses, the Birch Natural Mattress and the Birch Luxe Natural Mattress. The first is the brands most popular breathable mattress, and the second is an upgraded version. The Luxe Natural Mattress has extra comfort and cradling layers but offers the same medium-firm feel.

Final Verdict

Choosing the right mattressespecially when shopping onlinecan be a nightmare. There are countless retailers, all of which make bold claims about things like comfort, technology and luxury materials. With so many big-brand bedding companies claiming to be the best, how do you decide which mattress to go with? Dont fret; weve got you covered like a cozy comforter.

Ill give you the scoop on two big bedding brands: Saatva vs. Avocado. Then, Ill break down details and specs on a popular mattress pick from both brands, each of which has been individually tested by our shopping experts. Before writing this piece, I also chatted with Derek Hales, Founder and CEO of NapLab. Hales has tested over 390 mattresses and hundreds of other sleep products, and hes tested the two mattresses were discussing here: the Saatva Classic Mattress and the Avocado Ultimate Organic Mattress.

The biggest difference between the Avocado Ultimate Organic and Saatva Classic is simply mattress type and material construction, Hales says. The Avocado is an organic, all-natural latex hybrid, and the Saatva is a more traditional coil style mattress. Below, we will get into all the details about each brand and mattress, and well let you know how sleeping on each mattress went for our shopping editors.

Saatva vs. Avocado: What’s the Difference?

Saatvas motto is premium quality without traditional retail markups. By cutting out the middleman, Saatva can offer direct-to-you pricing and luxury products at a much lower price than other luxury retailers. On the other hand, Avocado’s mission is to make healthy sleep accessible and affordable to all. Avocados luxury organic mattresses are made from non-toxic, natural and affordable materials.

When it comes to the brands most popular mattress models, the Saatva Classic versus Avocado Ultimate Organic, our shopping editors slept on each one for more than an entire year. Thats right: We tested each mattress for more than 365 nights. Heres what we learned.

All About the Saatva Classic Mattress

The Saatva Classic Mattress has a multi-layer coiled structure that starts with a pillow topper and high-density memory foam, then individually wrapped coils and a base coiled unit that allows for better airflow and a cooler nights sleep. The layers of responsive coils reduce potential sleep disruptions caused by movement, so if you share a bed, your tossing and turning wont disturb your partner.

As for materials, the Saatva Classic is free of fiberglass and chemical flame retardants. Plus, its made with an antimicrobial treatment to prevent the growth of mold, mildew and bacteria. The organic cotton cover is hypoallergenic, too.

The mattress is offered in eight sizes (twin, twin XL, full, queen, king, split king, California king and split California king) and has two height options: 11.5 and 14.5 inches. Additionally, there are three firmness levels to choose from: plush soft, luxury firm and firm.

Mattress without bed sheet

Our tester, Editor Madi Koetting, picked the luxury firm model for her Saatva mattress review, which falls in the middle regarding firmness. The luxury firm feel offers plush comfort and support, which is great if you struggle with back pain. It’s also the optimal option for combo sleepers (side, stomach, back) and a good option if you and your partner desire different firmness levels.

The dual-coil design will help disperse body heat if you’re a hot sleeper. Plus, the organic cotton cover is breathable, which helps keep you cool. Its also one-sided, so you wont have to worry about flipping the mattress every few months.

Complimentary white glove service is included with every purchase of a Saatva mattress. The company will send a delivery team to set up your bed and remove your old mattressfree of charge. Saatva also offers a 365-night home trial, so you can return a mattress if its not right for you. If you fall in love with it like Koetting did, you can expect it to last for years with a lifetime warranty guarding against any defects.

After one year of use, I can confidently say that switching from an ultra-plush memory foam bed to the Saatva luxury firm hybrid mattress was an excellent decision. I used to wake up with neck and lower back pain due to sinking into my previous mattress, but now I wake up refreshed thanks to my Saatva bed, Koetting says. I also appreciate that the mattress hasnt become super plush over time, and I rest easy knowing this investment bed will last me and my partner several years.

If hotel-level firmness isnt your thing, youre in luck, Koetting adds. This Saatva hybrid pick is also available in a plush soft firmness level and a firm level, which is even less plush than the luxury firm model. I highly recommend the plush soft option for sleepers who are unwilling to give up that luxurious ‘burrowing’ feeling.”

All About the Avocado Ultimate Organic Mattress

Every Avocado mattress is handcrafted using 100% certified organic materials. Unlike conventional mattresses, organic mattresses are made with natural materials like wool, cotton and latex, which ensures theyre free of potentially toxic foams, chemical fire retardants and off-gassing materials.

The Avocado Ultimate Organic Mattress has a medium-firm feel, what Avocado calls a gentle firm. A medium firmness level is great for anyone with back pain, stomach and side sleepers, and heavier individuals. The plush version of the mattress, which adds an extra two inches of support, is ideal for side sleepers because it provides additional pressure relief. Additionally, the innerspring layer is divided into five support zones to distribute weight evenly across the mattress, providing immediate pressure relief for the shoulders, back and hips.

Regarding temperature control, a two-inch, all-natural latex foam is a comfort layer, which most sleepers find cooler than memory foam. To add additional cooling effects, we recommend topping the mattress with a set of cooling sheets. Below the latex are individually wrapped coils to reduce motion transfer. The button-tufted top layer is crafted from soft organic cotton with moisture-wicking properties.

Avocado Ultimate Organic Mattress

Editor Megan Wood used to review luxury hotel mattresses. She says, Ive tossed and turned on my fair share of expensive but sagging beds and woken up with an achy back. After testing the Avocado Green mattress for more than 365 nights, she says, Vacations aside, Ive slept on the Avocado Green mattress for an entire year, and Im thrilled to report that Im just as happy with it now as I was on the first night.

I used to sleep on my side with a pillow between my knees for better alignment. With the Avocado Green mattress, I ditched the pillow, Wood says. The mattress has held up to the addition of my boyfriend and his dog on most nights. I havent experienced any sagging, worn spots or discomfort. And I sleep better knowing my loved ones arent inhaling fire retardants through the night. Sleeping with a pillow between my knees is a distant memory.

My only change was to invest in a mattress protector to keep the Avocado clean and free from stains and spills, Wood adds. Ive recommended the Avocado to multiple friends who are also thrilled with the upgrade to better sleep with fewer chemicals.

Does Saatva mattress need a box spring?

According to the company website, whether youll need to use a box spring with your Saatva mattress depends on the base youre putting it on. If you have a platform bed, adjustable base or an existing mattress support system thats in good shape, you probably wont need to purchase a new box spring.

Saatva vs. Avocado: The Bottom Line

Saatva Classic Mattress

I asked Derek Halesas someone who has tested both the Avocado and Saatva mattresses for himselfto pinpoint the primary differences. Heres the bottom line regarding Saatva versus Avocado: Avocado’s latex hybrid design gives it a more polarizing feel. Latex as a material type is highly durable, but it’s also springy, resilient, heavy and dense, and it creates a more generalized body contouring hug. This feeling is neither good nor bad, but it is specific, he says. To be comfortable on the Avocado matress, you’ll need to absolutely love the feel of latex.

The Saatva Classic is built from layers of coils and foam and designed to create a balanced and even feel that many different types of sleepers can enjoy, he says. It’s also available in three firmness levels, which means a wide range of people with different body types and sleeping positions will find it comfortable. In my view, Saatva Classic is a mattress made for mass appeal.

When asked about the performance between the two, Hales said the Saatva had better cooling, higher bounce, and significantly better pressure relief. The Avocados advantage is its slightly better material responsiveness (due to the latex top layers).

Where to Buy the Saatva Classic Mattress

The Saatva Classic Mattress can only be purchased through thecompanys website. A queen-sized mattress retails for $2,095, but the company frequently runs sales and deals.

Where to Buy the Avocado Ultimate Organic Mattress

Avocado has a handful of stores in states like California, New York and Colorado. However, youll likely have to shop online, where you can compare mattresses, chat with customer support and more. A queen-sized, medium-firm Avocado Ultimate Organic Mattress sells for $2,800.

If there’s one thing you should prioritize, it’s your sleep. After all, scientists estimate that we spend at least one-third of our lives sleeping. Purchasing a new mattress seems like the obvious solution if you’re looking to eliminate aches and pains or simply improve the overall quality of your sleep. However, a new mattress is a big investment. If that’s not in the budget right now, don’t worry. There are other, more cost-effective ways to ensure you sleep comfortably through the night. Investing in a new mattress topper is a great place to start.

The best mattress toppers actually extend the life of your mattress. Some toppers change the feel entirely while others drastically improve your sleep quality by providing pressure relief, alleviating back pain or regulating your body temperature. And much like a mattress protector, they prevent spills, sweat and other stains from making it into the mattress itself. We tested nine mattress toppers, specifically looking for those that are best for side sleepers. The Dormeo Mattress Topper was our top Amazon pick. Here’s everything you need to know before adding it to your cart.

What is the Dormeo Mattress Topper?

The Dormeo Mattress Topper is a memory foam topper with medium firmness. It features innovative Octaspring technology to facilitate a cooler and more supportive sleep surface. What really sets the Dormeo mattress topper apart from other models is its three-zone support. Firmer Octasprings cradle your hips and back in the middle of the topper while softer Octasprings make up the zones around your shoulders and legs.

The Dormeo mattress topper has a non-slip bottom and adjustable corner straps to keep it in place.

The Dormeo mattress topper's 3 zone support offers targeted pressure point relief.

How We Tested It

Delivery and Setup

As someone who struggles with back pain, our tester, Leah Groth, was happy to try the Dormeo Mattress Topper on her Purple mattress. The topper arrived in a single box that Groth was able to bring inside and up a flight of stairs on her own. The topper itself, which Groth estimates to be around 30 pounds, was folded and wrapped in plastic. The heavy weight of this topper made it difficult to maneuver once it was unwrapped. “Carrying and setup was a one-person job. It was very easy to get up the stairs without struggling,” she says. “Once opened, however, it is harder to maneuver than the others [that I’ve tried]. It is heavier and less flexible.”

Once Groth managed to position the topper on her bed, she appreciated the fact that it didn’t need time to inflate or off-gas. The only thing she didn’t like about the Dormeo mattress topper was its size. According to Groth, there was quite a bit of overhang when placed on the mattress. Fortunately, the overhang didn’t affect the overall comfort or support of the topper and it stayed on well thanks to the adjustable corner straps.

Sleep Testing

Dormeo Premium Mattress Topper

After sleeping on the Dormeo mattress topper for five nights, Groth noticed an improvement in her back. “Because the topper is so firm, it prevents my back from sinking into the bed,” she explains. “However, it provides support at pressure points. I definitely noticed that my back was less achy and my neck didn’t feel so strained after sleeping on it for a few nights.” She also found the topper to be cooling and breathable with a high-quality feel.

Groth loved how supported she felt while sleeping on the Dormeo mattress topper. However, she notes that there is some room for improvement. Though the topper is advertised as having a medium-firm feel, Groth found it to be a bit too firm for her liking.

“It was a little too firm for me and I didn’t love the Octaspring technology, which is supposed to provide targeted pressure point relief,” explains Groth. “I prefer a softer mattress, especially for side sleeping, as I tend to shift positions in the night. While it did offer pressure point relief for side sleeping, I didn’t feel super comfortable.”

Dormeo Premium Mattress Topper

Additionally, Groth would have preferred a smoother cover. She could feel the hexagon impressions through her sheets.

Overall, Groth recommends the Dormeo mattress topper to anyone who likes the feel of a firm sleep surface. “It is definitely well-made with high quality materials,” she says. “And it’s thick.” We recommend pairing it with a medium-firm mattress like the Cocoon Chill or luxurious Saatva Classic Mattress.

Pros

Why You Should Trust Us

AtFamily Handyman, our team of editors and testers are always excited to try new products. We especially love testing products that enhance the quality of our sleep. We sent this mattress topper to long-term tester Leah Groth.

Groth put this topper on her own mattress and slept on it for five nights. During that time, she focused on its overall comfort and performance, paying special attention to how well it alleviated her back and neck aches. She also considered how easy it was to unpack and place on the bed, whether or not it had any odors and its overall value. “It is good quality, thick, and seems like it would last a long time,” raves Groth. “It may even get more comfortable over time. And the waterproof cover keeps it super protected.”

FAQ

Is the Dormeo mattress topper good for side sleepers?

The Dormeo mattress topper is designed for all sleeping positions. However, its smart three-zone support provides the appropriate amount of support for each part of your body. Firmer Octasprings in the middle of the topper offer much needed support for your hips, making the Dormeo mattress topper ideal for side sleepers.

How thick are Dormeo mattress toppers?

Dormeo Premium Mattress Topper

The Dormeo Mattress Topper we tested is 3 inches thick.

What Other Reviewers Had to Say

The Dormeo mattress topper has over 1,940 five-star reviews on Amazon with customers raving about its overall comfort and ability to alleviate back pain. Here’s what they had to say.

One Amazon customer insists that the Dormeo mattress topper completely changed the feel of their 9-year-old Tempur-Pedic mattress. “It has definitely improved the quality of my sleep and has improved the comfort of my 9-year-old Tempur-Pedic hybrid mattress,” they write. “I’ve slept on this topper for 2 weeks now and I absolutely love it! I’m a side sleeper and this cushions my hips. I sleep soundly without waking up with hip pain. Very happy and definitely recommend it.”

Happy in the Sunshine, another five-star reviewer, couldn’t be happier that they purchased this mattress topper in spite of it being a lesser-known brand.

“I bought this topper because of my back pain and because I sleep hot. Bam! This made all the difference. Pain is better and the bed doesn’t overheat like it does with regular memory foam,” raves Happy. “This brand never gets mentioned when you search the internet for best toppers. But guess what? It was rated number one by Consumer’s Union so I bought it. I’m glad I did.”

And five-star reviewer Ms. Gloria D is sleeping better than ever thanks to this topper.

“This mattress topper definitely supports the body, and I do sleep well now,” she writes. “It has helped with my sensitive pressure points and Im pleased with the thickness and appearance. Definitely cooler than the foam gel one that I tossed out.”

Dormeo Mattress Topper vs. Dreamsmith Memory Foam Mattress Topper

A search for memory foam mattress toppers on Amazon will yield thousands of results so finding the best one can feel like an impossible feat. We tested two highly rated memory foam mattress toppers from Amazon: the Dormeo mattress topper and the Dreamsmith mattress topper. Both mattress toppers are made of supportive memory foam and have adjustable straps to keep them securely in place. Moreover, they both have removable covers that can be tossed in the washing machine.

Starting at $282, the Dormeo mattress topper is slightly more than double the price of the Dreamsmith. The Dormeo offers three-zone support and has Octaspring technology which allows air to circulate, making this topper breathable and cooling.

The Dreamsmith comes in five sizes, three thickness levels and starts at $120. It is supportive and comfortable, but keep in mind that this mattress topper will need time to expand after being positioned on your bed.

Final Verdict

If youre looking for a way to spruce up your old mattress, then the Dormeo mattress topper is an excellent choice. This temperature regulating mattress topper offers targeted pressure point relief and all-over support so you’ll wake up well-rested.

Where to Buy the Dormeo Mattress Topper

The Dormeo Mattress Topper is available on Amazon. It’s available in seven sizes and starts at $282. Best of all, it’s eligible for Prime two-day shipping which means you’ll be on your way to better sleep in no time.

Being a hot sleeper is just one of several annoying symptoms that our product tester Jill Schildhouse endures due to hypothyroidism. For many, an underactive (or overactive) thyroid gland can result in difficulty regulating body temperature. If you cant seem to keep your cool during the night, no matter how low youve cranked the thermostat, a DreamCloud mattress might be just what you need.

Last year, Schildhouse ditched her eight-year-old mattress to upgrade to the DreamCloud Premier Rest. After an entire year of testing, she tells us that the mattress has made a noticeable difference in her ability to get a good nights restespecially as a hot sleeper.

Below, well break down all the need-to-know deets about the DreamCloud mattress and report on Jills findings after testing it. If youre someone who wakes up in the middle of the night doused in sweat, trying to rip the blankets and sheets of your bed to gain some relief, a cooling mattress may just be the bedding upgrade youve been waiting for.

What is a DreamCloud Mattress?

TheDreamCloudis an affordable hybrid mattress in a box, which means its composed of memory foam and supportive coils. Plus, its delivered in a box, so its easy to move and get inside.

There are three DreamCloud mattress options to choose from: The base-model DreamCloud Mattress, which is the most popular option with a 12-inch profile; the upgraded, eight-layer DreamCloud Premier with a 13-inch profile and a little more support; and the premium-level, eight-layer DreamCloud Premier Rest with a 14-inch profile.

The multiple layers of hybrid comfort include a breathable cashmere blend cover, contouring quilted gel memory foam, supportive quilted foam, therapeutic gel-infused memory foam, dynamic transition layer, individually wrapped coils with edge support, a stability base layer and a shift-resistant cover with handles.

DreamCloud Mattress Product Features

As described, theDreamCloud Mattressboasts eight luxurious layers that provide soft, contouring support via memory foam and pressure-relief comfort thanks to its individually wrapped innerspring coils.

Most importantly for our product tester, the mattresss gel memory foam and coil system work together to reduce heat retention, disperse body heat and promote better airflow, reducing the risk of overheating. Additionally, the cashmere blend cover is moisture-wicking and breathable, dispelling heat for a cooler sleep.

Along with providing relief from the heat, users say DreamCloud mattresses are also great for back pain. The transitional layer provides lumbar support and promotes spinal alignment, while the edge support around the coils makes it easier to get in and out of bed if youre someone who typically experiences stiffness upon waking up.

How We Tested It

A small black and white dog lies on a white mattress with a yellow label reading "DREAMCLOUD" in large letters. The plush, quilted surface of the mattress is visible, along with an elegant lamp in the background.

For an entire year, Schildhouse rated the quality of sleep she got on the DreamCloud Premier Rest. She carefully considered four categories: comfort, support and pain relief, heat retention and motion transfer.

Schildhouse typically sleeps on her side (and sometimes her stomach), while her partner is mostly a back sleeper, so they had just about every sleeping position covered between the two of them. Theyre also in their mid-40s and starting to experience some aches and pains in the mornings.

Additionally, as mentioned, Schildhouse frequently overheats during the night. She also tosses and turns a lot. So, she wanted to know if the DreamCloud Mattress could do it all. Would it be comfortable for her and her partner? Would it alleviate aches and pains? Could it keep her cool and reduce motion transfer?

The king-sized mattress arrived in a small box at her door. Once I opened it up, the DreamCloud mattress magically unfolded into an impressively thick and shockingly heavy plush mattress, she says. I was a bit worried about off-gassing, an unpleasant experience I remember from purchasing our previous mattress. Thankfully, that was not the case with the DreamCloud Premier Rest, as the slight chemical odor dissipated within 24 hours.

After the mattress was opened and set up (Schildhouse called on two other people to help her place the heavy mattress on her bed), it was time to begin the 365-day test period.

The firmness of the mattress is a 6-1/2 on a scale from 1 to 10, she says. For the first few days, we were acutely aware of how much firmer the DreamCloud felt than our previous mattress. But by week two, we were fully on board with how supportive it was. A year later, it still feels dreamy and cloud-like, contouring to the shape of our bodies.

Each night, when I got into bed, I noticed how much cooler the sheets felt against my skin and absolutely loved the sensation, Schildhouse adds. Even though I still felt warm some nights, I no longer woke up overheated and drenched in sweat.

While unsure if the motion-transfer support layer actually working or she was just moving less because she wasnt hot and uncomfortable, Schildhouse says she had fewer restless nights on the DreamCloud Mattress. Furthermore, she didnt wake or disturb her partner with middle-of-the-night tossing and turning. The mattress proved to meet its claims in terms of performance and comfort.

FAQ

Is DreamCloud Mattress firm or soft?

Its medium firm. Our tester, Jill Schildhouse, found the mattress to be pretty firm but also to provide the support she needed.

How long do DreamCloud Mattresses last?

Due to its hybrid construction, a DreamCloud Mattress should last you around eight years, depending on how well its taken care of. Hybrid mattresses also tend to be more responsive and better at temperature regulation.

Are Nectar and DreamCloud the same company?

If you like Nectar mattresses, youll be pleased to know that Nectar and DreamCloud are actually sister brands.

Is DreamCloud a good mattress?

Yes. DreamCloud manufactures high-quality mattresses that are built to last. DreamCloud has won numerous awards, including Best Mattress from Architectural Digest (2024), Best Value Adjustable Bed from the Sleep Foundation (2024) and Best Firm Mattress for Side Sleepers from Readers Digest (2024).

What Others Had to Say

The DreamCloud Mattress has nearly 9,000 customer reviews and a 4.6-star rating.

Diana H. says, This is the best bed and mattress Ive ever bought. After back surgery, hip surgery and now knee surgery, I love the adjustable bed.

Amie T. is a repeat buyer. They say, This is my second purchase, both plumped up quickly and are very comfortable. I love the convenience of a mail-delivery mattress.

And Jennifer M. says, We have had our DreamCloud bed for a little over a month. No more snoring from the significant other with the adjustable bed frame. You have no idea what this has done to improve my sleep quality. The bed has just the right amount of firmness. Honestly cannot complain and tell everyone who mentions they need a new bed to consider DreamCloud.

Product Comparison

Compared to other boxed mattresses from different brands, DreamCloud offers an impressive trial period of 365 nights (one whole year, compared to the typical 100- to 180-night sleep trials competitors offer) and an impressive lifetime warranty against normal use (DreamCloud will replace or repair your mattress at no charge).

Furthermore, you can snag a sleep bundle with two pillows, a sheet set and a mattress protector for just $79 when you buy a DreamCloud mattress.

Final Verdict

After a year of thorough testing, Schildhouses DreamCloud mattress showed no signs of wear or tear and became more comfortable with use. The cooling technology still works just as well, leaving me more comfortable, temperature-wise, she says.

I travel regularly, and Im always excited to get back to my own mattress to reset my body after enduring less comfortable hotel mattresses that make me hot, Jill adds.

Each side has customizable firmness.

If I had $1 for every time I thought about how my husband and I needed a new mattress, Id buy an island. Our Beautyrest mattress had seen better days, and its once firm edges were dipped and didnt offer the same support it did years ago. I wasnt sure what firmness level Ior my husband, for that matterwould prefer, so I felt comfortable testing out the customizable Naturepedic mattress.

This non-toxic mattress allows you to swap out the inside layers. So, if you find that you chose the wrong firmness level or, after years of slumbers, it starts to give, you can swap out a piece of the mattress instead of getting rid of the whole thing. I dont know about you, but that instantly gave me peace of mind when making a decision as personal as a mattress.

What is the Naturepedic Mattress?

This Naturepedic mattress, labeled EOS Classic Organic Mattress (Latex-Free), is certified non-toxic and organic by Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS), meaning its free of harmful and allergenic substances. This model also comes in a non-latex-free version (Im just allergic to latex, so I went with the other one). You can shop it in sizes twin, twin XL, full, queen, king and California kingall with a 12-inch profile.

We Tried It

Naturepedic EOS Classic Organic Mattress

Each side of this mattress can have its own firmness level, allowing you to choose between plush, medium, cushion-firm and firm.

Naturepedic Mattress Features

What makes this Naturepedic mattress so special is that youre not married to whatever firmness level you choose, which tends to be a major concern when selecting the best mattress. This non-toxic bed has inserts, meaning it doesnt come all in one piece, including the customizable 3-inch glueless micro-coil layer and the customizable 8-inch glueless encased coil support layer. So while, yes, theres quite a bit of assembly with this model, if youve found youve ordered the wrong firmness level, you can simply swap out the internal components to get the right feel for your sleep. Or, if after many years of snoozing, you find that its more worn in than youd like, you can get a new insert rather than an entirely new bed. Its a convenient feature that makes the buying decision easier.

How We Tested It

My Naturepedic mattress was quick to deliver but took some time to set up. Still, the comfortable sleep was worth it. Heres how I tested this mattress.

Delivery

Naturepedic Eos Mattress delivery boxes

My order was placed on Monday, the mattress shipped that Wednesday, and it arrived on my front porch that Friday. I was delighted, as I was so over my old mattress and practically foaming at the mouth for my Naturepedic to arrive. It showed up in four separate boxes, so I was thankful that the delivery man slid them into my living room.

The main shell and the inserts are wrapped separately, so it does take time to remove them from the box and unwrap them from the plastic. I made the error of doing all of this in my living room. What I shouldve done was unbox the components, bring them upstairs to my bedroom and unwrap them there. Instead, I did all of that downstairs and had to drag each piece up the stairs. It wasnt ideal, but thats on me.

Assembly

Im going to be honest: The idea of putting together a mattress wasnt exactly exciting to me. But now I see that, long story short; Id rather have to assemble it and have the option of switching out its contents rather than have a mattress in a box that turns out to be totally wrong for me and have to deal with shipping the whole thing back.

Before you even get started, I cant stress enough how helpful this video from Naturepedic was. It goes through each step and gives helpful tips so you know exactly what to do.

Naturepedic Eos Mattress

Now, Im not the most patient of people, which means that I couldnt wait for my husband to be available to set up this mattress. Plus, I was so over our old one that I couldnt bear spending one more night with less-than-optimal sleep. So, once our old mattress was out of the way, I first brought the Naturepedic shell casing upstairs and laid it on top of our metal bed frame. Then, it was a matter of placing each layer inside of that casing. My husband and I both chose cushion-firm firmness, so our sides were exactly the same.

Assembling the Naturepedic mattress wasnt difficult, per se. The challenge is that the pieces fit very snugly inside the casingas youd want them to so there arent any gaps (and there arent!)so you have to be strategic with ensuring each layer is in the right place and tightly so. After all the layers were in on each side, it was time to zip up the entire thing. This part did cause me to break a sweat. In hindsight, it definitely wouldve been easier had I waited for my husband because one of us couldve held the top and the side close together while the other one zipped. It took a lot of effort for one person to do this.

But I did it all by myselfnot that Id recommend it, but it can be done.

Sleeping

It had been over 10 years since I had picked out a new mattress, so I wasnt sure what firmness my previous one was and what Id like. Plus, my old mattress was worn in, so it didnt feel the same as it had on day one. Among the four firmness level optionsplush, medium, cushion-firm and firmmy husband and I each opted for cushion-firm. When it arrived, I was nervous because it felt quite firm. At one point, I thought maybe the wrong ones were sent. But everything was correct, and I was ready to put this Naturepedic mattress to the test.

On that first night, I noticed right away how different it felt from my old mattress. This one was firmer, as expected, but I also noticed how it felt getting in and out of bed. The edges were strong and supported my weight as I moved. It didnt have that sunken-in feeling as only a very old model does. I appreciated that from the start. If you had asked me before this if I like a firm mattress, I wouldve said absolutely not. My parents have a firm memory foam mattress, and Ive napped in it before while dog-sitting. Ive never liked it. The difference between theirs and mine is that mine is made of coils, and it isnt firm-firm. So, while its not stiff as a board, its still very supportive.

Naturepedic Eos Mattress with a kettlebell on it.

It only took me a few nights to decide that I love this Naturepedic mattress. It turns out that cushion-firm is the perfect firmness for me. In fact, I regularly get knots in my left shoulder, which results in my left arm going numb and leaving me in a lot of pain. Since sleeping on the Naturepedic mattress, Ive noticed those knots are less regular and less severe. I take it that my body likes it, and its more supported than it was before. And as an every-position sleeper, Im happy whether Im on my side, back or stomach.

My husband also got the cushion firm on his side of the bed, but he hasnt fallen in love with it like I have. He finds it too firm and would prefer something softer. Since its only been a little over a month, I want him to give his body more time to adjust. But if, after that, it still hasnt broken in to his liking, we know we have the option of swapping out the firmness level. Imagine if we had to send back the entire mattress. Not only would I be disappointed because I love my side of the bed, but it would be a bit of a headache.

Why You Should Trust Us

Ive been an editor and writer since 2014 and in the editorial commerce world, where I test products, write about products and edit shopping stories, since 2017. Ive covered everything from beauty products to strollers to, yes, bedding, including cooling sheets and a cooling comforter. As the senior shopping editor at Readers Digest, a sister site of Family Handyman under Trusted Media Brands, I understand the important information shoppers want to know, and I strive to provide an in-depth perspective.

Im particularly qualified to review this Naturepedic mattress because its latex-free, and Im allergic to latex. My allergy has only gotten worse as Ive gotten older, so testing a latex-free mattress was super important to me, even though a non-latex-free one would be covered with a mattress topper and sheets anyway. You can never be too careful.

What Other Reviewers Had to Say

From over 20 reviews, this Naturepedic mattress has earned an average of 4.7 out of five stars.

I tried several different beds and found them all to be too hot, and even latex being too warm for me. In my search for a new bed, I became aware of the harmful chemicals in most mattresses. So, I decided that I needed a non-latex, organic mattress, writes Grace, a verified buyer. I decided to try the Naturepedic EOS with microcoils. I started out with cushion-firm and found it too soft. Swapping for firmer coils was easy and now I have the perfect bed. It sleeps cool and I can rest easy knowing that I’m not breathing in toxic chemicals.

I’m sensitive to latex, even the clean/pure Dunlop latex seems to bother my breathing. [It] makes my breathing more shallow, which is an immune response. Many organic beds are made with latex. I still wanted an organic bed being a person spends so much of their life in bed, but I needed to find something latex-free. Enter Naturepedic latex-free, writes Steve, a five-star reviewer. I am beyond pleased with the product! It is super high quality. I do woodworking as a hobby and am very detail oriented. Also, my job is very detail oriented at work. Trust me when I say it is high quality!

Product Comparison: Naturepedic vs. Newton Mattresses

Naturepedic started out focusing on organic crib mattressesand has since expanded to beds for kids and adults, too. Newton is another popular mattress brand for babies, kids and even pets. When deciding between Naturepedic vs. Newton mattresses for your little one, there are some differences to consider.

Naturepedic offers three crib mattresses: classic, breathable and ultra-breathable. They start at $269, and all of them are waterproof, lightweight, or feature coils. The differences come in with the type of cover, if any, and the number of coils. Most importantly, all of Naturepedics crib mattresses are 100% certified organic and free from harmful chemicals. Plus, the brand offers free shipping, a 100-night trial, free returns and a limited lifetime warranty.

Newton also has three crib mattresses (not including its mini crib option): original, waterproof and essential. Starting at $199, the three mattresses are Greenguard Gold Certified. The original and waterproof are 5.5 inches thick and designed for ages 0 to 4, while the essential is four inches thick and made for ages 0 to 3. Each one has a zippered, washable cover, but the essential is a single layer; the original is a quilted double layer, and the waterproof liner is a quilted double layer waterproof liner. Just like with Naturepedic, you also get free shipping, a 100-night trial, free returns and a limited lifetime warranty.

When its time to choose one of the brands, keep these core factors in mind. For one, Newtons crib mattresses are all two-stage models to accommodate your child through the toddler years. But with Naturepedic, you have the option of single-stage or two-stage. On the flip side, all of Naturepedics crib mattresses are waterproof, but only one of Newtons models is waterproofan important consideration since babies tend to get messy. It all comes down to what features are most valuable to you.

Final Verdict

Naturally, youre going to consider the pros and cons more strongly when making a more expensive purchase.TheNaturepedic mattress takes away some of the common cons associated with shopping for a mattress.Being able to customize each side of the bedand swap out the firmness insert if you realize you made the wrong choiceshould instantly put your mind at ease, as it did mine. When you couple that with its non-toxic, organic stamp of approval from GOTS, its pretty hard not to feel safe with this model.

Where to Buy the Naturepedic Mattress

The post Beautyrest Black Mattress Review: My Only Complaint Is That I Didn’t Get It Sooner appeared first on Family Handyman.

]]>
We all know sleep is important. It’s so important that we spend about a third of our lives in bed. As a tired millennial who regrets missing out on every nap I told my parents I didn’t need as a kid, sleep has become my priority. When moving to my first apartment, I bought the cheapest mattress I could find and relied on a mattress topper to make my bed comfortable.

Now that I’m 31 going on 70 (and feeling all the aches and pains of my past decisions), I decided that if I’m going to prioritize sleep, I need to get a better mattress. I tested the Beautyrest Black Mattress, and after two months of sleeping like a dog after a day at the beach, I can’t believe it took me this long to get one.

What Is the Beautyrest Black Mattress?

Beautyrest is a luxury mattress brand with a longstanding history as a leader in the mattress industry. Founded in 1925, they’ve consistently been an innovator in the mattress space, starting with the invention of their patented pocketed coil technology that provides increased support and motion separation.

In 2006, Beautyrest debuted its Black line, which has since grown to be one of its most desirable collections. Now with four series to choose from, the Beautyrest Black line has evolved to include more features and luxuries to help you have your best night’s sleep.

All Black series mattresses have a focus on individualized support, motion separation and advanced temperature management, with newer mattresses incorporating features to provide instant pressure relief and conforming support.

Beautyrest Black Mattress

No matter your sleeping position, this mattress's combination of pocketed coils and gel-infused foam will have you slipping off to dreamland.

Beautyrest Black Mattress Features

Beautyrest Black Mattress

The Beautyrest Black Mattress comes in many different options to suit your sleeping style. We tested the medium pillow-top option, which is advertised as being “for the person who likes medium support with just the right amount of pressure relief and a lush top layer.” This option is great for all sleepers, but they do have other options that specifically address the needs of back, stomach and side sleepers.

The Beautyrest Black mattress also comes with features that help increase your comfort, such as advanced support and motion separation, cooling temperature management and pressure relief.

A nice touch: The company provides complimentary white glove delivery which includes both the removal of your old mattress and set up of your new one (a huge upgrade from the typical boxed mattress experience). To ensure you love your mattress, Beautyrest also includes a 100-night trial with free returns, plus a 10-year limited warranty so you can keep resting easy.

How We Tested It

My partner and I spent over two months testing the Beautyrest to ensure we could fully evaluate all features of this mattress. We have two very different sleeping styles, body types and sleeping concerns, so we really felt the range of the mattress’s motion transfer, temperature control, support and comfort.

Motion Transfer

As someone who frequently tosses and turns in my sleep, one of the first features I look for in a mattress is low motion transfer. With my previous mattress, I was frequently woken up when my pets jumped on and off the bed, and my poor partner was up and down with my constant movement.

The Beautyrest Black provided us with more relief than I expected for a hybrid mattress. In my experience, mattresses with coils, even hybrids, tend to do pretty poorly in this category, but Beautyrest’s Triple-Stranded Pocketed Coil Technology is surprisingly good.

While the hybrid nature of this mattress means it will have more motion transfer than a full memory foam mattress, Beautyrest’s patented coils and use of gel and memory foam within its comfort layers reduce motion more than a standard coil bed. These features allow me, my partner and even our dog to sleep undisturbed for the majority of the night.

Temperature Control

The Beautyrest Black mattress has special Sleep Climate Technology and Micro Diamond Memory Foam, which are meant to help with temperature control, especially for those who sleep hot (like me)and it shows. There’s a significant difference between the heat retention of the Beautyrest mattress and the other mattress in our home. I noticed it the very first night.

My dog enjoys “warming up” my spot in bed, which, while cute, means I normally start my night off hotter than I’d like to be. While there was the slightest warmth to the bed when my dog begrudgingly moved, it was much cooler than usual. Throughout my time sleeping on this mattress, I’ve woken up feeling warm less often, which is a godsend during the grueling East Coast summer.

Pressure Relief and Support

Beautyrest Black Mattress side view

As a person with chronic back pain, pressure relief and support are paramount in my search for a good mattress. I tend to sleep in all positions depending on how my spine is feeling on any given night, and I’ve found that other mattresses are only good for certain types of sleepers.

While Beautyrest Black does have specific mattresses built for those who may solely sleep in one position, the medium pillow-top mattress is a fantastic option for most people.

The hybrid model provides a firmer base with pocket coils that is fantastic for back sleepers, while also offering layers of gel memory foam to provide a softness that is much needed for stomach and side sleepers. The foam comfort layers conform to your body and help relieve common pressure points in the hips and shoulders.

Pros

  • Perfect combination of support and comfort for all sleeping positions
  • Temperature control to fight heat transfer
  • Motion separation technology decreases movement
  • Beautyrest offers setup and takeaway of your old mattress

Cons

  • Expensive compared to other mattresses on the market
  • Hybrid design may not meet super-specific needs

FAQ

How long does a Beautyrest black mattress last?

Normally, a high-quality mattress like the Beautyrest Black should last between seven and ten years.

Can a Beautyrest black mattress be flipped?

Beautyrest Black mattresses should not be flipped. They are designed with a specific top and bottom: One side has the comfort upgrades, while the other holds the pocketed coils.

What type of mattress is Beautyrest Black?

The Beautyrest Black is a hybrid mattress that incorporates gel memory foam with Triple Stranded Pocketed Coil Technology to offer both support and comfort.

What other reviewers have to say

Across the different sites where the Beautyrest Black Mattress is available, customers have come to the same conclusionthey love this mattress. Carmen H. on Amazon says, “This mattress is medium-firm and I love it. I have major back issues so a good mattress is important to me. […] Since I’m sleeping better and my back is no worse, I believe the Beautyrest Black is doing the job.”

On Beautyrest’s site, Nessa says, “Have slept on it for two weeks now and I’ve gotten better sleep than I was getting before! My back doesn’t hurt like it did before and I don’t wake four times during the night tossing and turning.”

Beautyrest Black Mattress vs. Stearns and Foster

The Beautyrest Black Mattress collection and Stearns and Foster mattresses have lots in common. Both collections are considered high-end mattress brands, and have a focus on sustainability, durability and luxury. While they do have similar focuses, there are a few differences between the brands.

When it comes to general comfort, both brands offer plush, firm and medium options for their mattress, and have a focus on support and comfort through their specific coil and memory foam technology. Through this technology, both brands are known for their longevity and lasting comfort which is backed up by their respective warranties.

The biggest difference between Beautyrest Black and Stearns and Foster is their pricing. While the Beautyrest Black line isn’t cheap, Stearns and Foster hybrid mattresses are even more expensivestarting at $3,200 compared to Beautyrest’s $2,000.

This increased price tag is a result of Stearns and Foster using materials such as silk, wool and cashmere compared to the gel-infused memory foam and comfort layers used by Beautyrest. While they may use more expensive materials, the feedback for comfort and durability is close to identical.

If you’re looking for an economical luxury option that maintains quality, Beautyrest wins this competition.

Why You Should Trust Us

I’m a homeowner and regular home renovator (flipping not just my own home but, my parents’ and others in my neighborhood), so I know how much thought goes into making a large purchase, like a mattress. I also suffer from common sleep issues like hot sleeping and chronic pain that mattress brands such as Beautyrest claim to address.

For this test, I not only spent several months sleeping on the Beautyrest, but evaluating it using more than 20 data points to assess delivery, construction, quality and comfort.

At Family Handyman, we’re extremely familiar with mattress reviews, testing everything from the affordable Amazon Zinus mattress to the cooling Sealy Cocoon Chill mattress and the Classic Saatva. And we add to our reviews collection every day, constantly assessing whether the new sleep products on the market are worth your time.

Final Verdict

After two months of sleeping on the Beautyrest Black mattress, I can confidently say that I’ve never slept better. This mattress is extremely supportive, yet comfy, and has all the features to make sure I sleep soundly all night long. This mattress is on the expensive side, but the investment is worth the money. It’s an absolute luxury product and a must-have if you’re looking to fall in love with your bed again.

Where to Buy the Beautyrest Black Mattress

The Beautyrest Black Mattress is available directly through Beautyrest’s website and other large retailers like Mattress Firm, Amazon, and Wayfair. For a standard queen bed, the price of a Beautyrest Black mattress ranges from $2,00 to $5,000 depending on the series and firmness you choose.

The results were stunning.

I’m a troubled sleeper who often suffers from insomnia, frequent wakings with trouble falling back asleep and tossing and turning. I used to be a die-hard stomach sleeper who couldn’t fall into that deep, coma-like slumber unless I rolled onto my belly. But becoming very pregnant with my son quashed that level of deep sleep, and I learned how to snooze on my side.

Eleven years later, I still mostly sleep on one side, so it’s perhaps surprising that it wasn’t until this year that I started experiencing chronic neck and shoulder pain after waking up. I thought it was a pillow issue, so I bought newer, fluffier ones with a higher loft. That didn’t do the trick. Maybe it was the inexpensive boxed mattress I’d bought on sale the previous year at Wayfair? Possibly.

“If you want great support and pressure point relief, you may find that a medium-firm mattress or a hybrid-style mattress is best for you,” says Julia Siemen, a certified sleep science coach for Sleep Advisor. “These mattresses are designed to provide zoned support, pocket coils and the option of latex or memory foam top layers, all of which can be interchanged to customize the mattress and find the most supportive option for you.”

I had to test the plush Silk & Snow organic mattress to find out if its zoned supporta combo of soft coils on the outer thirds and firmer coils on the middle thirdswould help me awaken pain-free.

What Is the Silk and Snow Organic Mattress?

Silk & Snow Mattress

The Silk & Snow organic mattress is a hybrid known for its minimal environmental impact, chemicaland synthetic-free materials and certifications from the Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS), Global Organic Latex Standard (GOLS), OEKO-TEX Standard 100 and Eco-Institut.

Patrick Gunther, a sleep expert who works with PlushBeds, explains what each certification means:

  • GOLS certifies that a mattress is produced with at least 95% organic latex and ensures there’s minimal environmental impact; it also ensures positive social impact like fair working practices and wages throughout the supply chain.
  • GOTS certifies that textiles follow organic production processes such as spinning, knitting, weaving and more.
  • OEKO-Tex Standard 100 tests for more than 1,000 common harmful substances and assures an item is harmless to humans.
  • Eco-Institut tests for heavy metals, VOCs, pesticides and more, and certifies that products are safe in indoor environments.

Silk & Snow Organic Plush Hybrid Mattress

With zoned support and a combination of coils and latex foam, this mattress is a supportive dream, especially for side sleepers.

Silk and Snow Mattress Features

The Silk & Snow organic mattress is constructed of a mix of organic padding that provides comfort and function and coils that add structure and support. Features include:

  • GOTS-certified organic cotton cover that provides a breathable sleeping surface
  • GOTS-certified organic wool quilt layer that acts as a natural fire retardant
  • GOLS-certified organic latex layer
  • A combination of soft coils on the outer third and firmer coils on the inner third of the mattress is engineered to promote spinal support
  • Dense, pocketed spring coils that provide support and limit motion transfer
  • Extra-firm perimeter that reinforces the structure of the mattress and prevents sinking when you sit on the edge
  • Reinforced side handles that make rotation easy

The Silk & Snow’s mix of soft and firm pocket spring coilsoffers zoned support, which means the mattress has different materials and levels of firmness built throughout. According to Nicole Mondshein, a sleep product expert at Sleepopolis, a zoned mattress providesextra spinal and lumbar support that can help relieve and even prevent back and neck pain.

“Hybrid mattresses offer qualities like supportive coiled cores with soft layers of memory foam or latex on top,” says Mondshein. “A zoned support hybrid mattress may be the best option if you are looking for the best pressure relief and support throughout the night.”

The Silk & Snow mattress has a latex layer instead of memory foam. This layer doesn’t cradle the body like memory foam but instead provides a firmer bounce that’s durable and breathable. According to Gunther, latex isn’t heat-activated and reacts faster than memory foam, which relies on heat to activate and contour to the body.

“Latex’s open cell matrix and pinholes also aid in helping it to breathe better, making for a cooler sleep experience than memory foam,” says Gunther. “Natural latex foam also has the added benefit of being antimicrobial, dust mite resistant and is also resistant to mold and mildew formation.”

How We Tested It

The Silk & Snow organic mattress arrived in a tall, slender box that was ripped at both ends. As soon as I grabbed the box to move it inside, I understood why the box looked like it had been dragged from the delivery truck. It felt lined-with-bricks heavy. To say it was awkward and sweat-inducing to heave it inside the front door may be an understatement. I enlisted help from a male neighbor to carry it upstairs and even tweaked my knee during transport (ouch).

Silk & Snow Mattress

Once upstairs, unwrapped, and propped on the edge of the bed frame, however, it popped open and plopped itself in place. It didn’t need any time to inflate and had no odors. The mattress comes with reinforced handles on both sides, a thoughtful detail that makes it breezy to flip the mattress and lift it (once unwrapped, that is) for sheet fitting. One aesthetic oddity: It doesn’t quite fit my queen-sized bed frame corner to corner. You get a peek-a-boo view of the wooden slats of the bed frame if you look closely, even though the mattress is queen-sized.

Silk & Snow Mattress

I noticed a positive difference in my neck and shoulder pain after the first night of sleep. After 30 days, I’m amazingly pain-free in my neck and shoulders when I wake up, despite spending hours a day hunched over a laptop. I also feel generally less creaky and achy when I get out of bed. Even with the plush pillow top, the mattress is relatively firm and holds its shape versus cocooning you. I think this support is key to alleviating pain.

I was skeptical at first of how comfortable I’d feel (temperature-wise) when trying this mattress. I tend to be a warm sleeper and always need to have at least one foot poking out of the covers. I wasn’t sure how well the organic cotton and wool would regulate my body temperature, as I tend to buy mattresses and pillows with cooling features. I tested this mattress in the middle of summer, and have no air conditioning and only a fan. Granted, I live in temperate San Diego, where it’s rare to have nighttime temperatures above the mid-70s, but I was pleasantly surprised to note that I didn’t feel too warm while sleeping and didn’t wake up sweaty once.

Pros

  • Ready to use when unwrapped
  • Reinforced handles make moving and flipping easy
  • Pocket coils provide added support
  • Increased edge support
  • Free shipping and returns
  • 15-year warranty
  • 365-night trial
  • Three types available: firm, medium-firm, plush
  • GOLS, GOTS, OEKO-TEX, Eco-Institut certifications
  • No weight limit for this mattress

Cons

  • Firm latex layer may not appeal to those who want to sink into their mattress
  • Pricier than some other hybrid mattresses
  • Mattress doesn’t cover the entire bed frame, corner to corner

FAQ

What is the Silk and Snow mattress made of?

The Silk & Snow mattress is made of GOTS-certified organic cotton and organic wool, GOLS-certified latex, a mix of soft and firm coils in the middle third layer and dense pocketed spring coils.

Is Silk and Snow Greenguard certified?

The Silk & Snow organic mattress is not Greenguard certified, but it does have Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS), Global Organic Latex Standard (GOLS), OEKO-TEX Standard 100 and Eco-Institut certifications.

Silk and Snow Mattress vs. Douglas Original Mattress

Both Silk & Snow and Douglas are Canadian mattress companies that make their sleep products in Canada using Canadian-sourced materials.

The Douglas original mattress is a medium-firm foam mattress with three foam layers (made without chemicals), cooling gel foam (made with up to 40% reduced carbon footprint), and pocket-coil springs that reduce motion transfer and pressure-point relief for all sleep positions. It’s available in seven sizes, including less mainstream dimensions like twin XL and split king. The queen mattress measures 60 inches by 80 inches by 10 inches, weighs 65 pounds and costs about $600 USD.

The Silk & Snow organic mattress has several eco-friendly and health certifications and is made of cotton, latex and wool layers, plus a variety of coils that provide support and limit motion transfer. It doesn’t include foam or a cooling gel layer, but the latex layer and cotton layers provide breathability (albeit without the cool-to-the-touch feel of a gel layer). It’s available in six sizes, including twin XL and California king; all are available in firm, medium-firm and plush. The queen mattress measures 60 inches by 80 inches by 10 inches, weighs between 91 and 136 pounds, and costs $1,700 USD.

Final Verdict

I was pleasantly surprised by how quickly the Silk & Snow organic mattress eliminated my neck and shoulder pain. I thought I preferred a softer mattress, but the support this mattress provides, combined with the eco and health certifications, makes it one of the best mattresses in a box if you can swing the cost.

One important piece of advice, though. If you’re going to buy a hybrid mattress for added support and pressure point relief, Gunther suggests putting the mattress on an adequate base, ideally an orthopedic foundation made of solid wood with a euro-slatted design. “One of the main things that is critical in helping a mattress to perform well (providing the needed comfort and support) is to be certain the foundation below the mattress is strong enough,” he says.

If youve ever shopped for a couch in person, you know it can be an exhausting, all-day process, especially if youre shopping at a large furniture warehouse or outlet store. Plus, most stores dont display every sofa in stock in their showroom. Shopping online can save you the trouble of traveling to a furniture store while also letting you choose from more options.

From dining room tables to sofas and outdoor furniture, Burrow offers a wide range of furniture piecesand weve tested a few of them.

One of our best editor-tested sectional sofas is Burrows Mambo 4-Piece Sectional. After almost a year of testing this modular sectional sofa, were checking in to let you know how it has held up. Here are our honest thoughts on the Burrow Mambo Sectional

What is the Burrow Mambo Sectional?

The Mambo Sectional is a block style modern, modular sofa sectional. The sectional is low to the ground and has wide arms with a curved back to offer ergonomic support. Its available in camel-color leather and green and gray fabrics. You can choose high arms or wide, low arms, too.

Like all of Burrows furniture, the Mambo Sectional is delivered right to your door in protective packaging and is incredibly easy to assemble. All you have to do is unbox the couch and attach a few pieces (without tools), like the legs and back of the couch, to the seat cushions. If youre looking for furniture quality thats a step up from IKEA and easier to assemble shipped straight to your front door, Burrow ticks all the boxes. And because their pieces typically come in multiple packages, you dont have to worry about fitting large sofas through narrow hallways and door openingssimply slide it inside to the room you wish and set it up there!

Burrow Mambo 4-Piece Sectional

A modular sectional sofa that's easy to put together, take apart and rearrange

Product Features

According to Burrow, the Mambo 4-Piece Sectional in camel is made with top-grain leather imported from Italy. Its a durable fabric that is scratch-resistant and stain-resistant. Its tight weave also prevents claws and tiny hands from snagging it.

The Mambo features custom molded hardware to connect all the modules, making it easy to set up and rearrange when you want to change the layout of your room or move furniture. (This is my favorite feature. Of all the sectional sofas Ive had, the Mambo is the easiest to rearrange and move around.)

The sectional is 100 inches long, 74 inches deep and 28 inches tall. Its seat depth is 26 inches, and its seat height is 18 inches.

How We Tested It

As mentioned, theMambo 4-Piece Sectional was delivered directly to my door in about 10 boxes. (When in stock, the sectional ships in about 5-10 business days, so theres no waiting around for weeks for furniture orders to be fulfilled.) My partner and I slid each box into the front door and back to our office space, where we unboxed and assembled the sectional togetherwhile it was nice to have help, it could have been a one-person job if necessary. Each piece was securely wrapped and boxed in protective packaging.

The setup involved unpackaging the couch, screwing on some legs and snapping pieces together. It was that easy. I opted for the camel leather fabric in the low-arm style. You can also add an ottoman for an upcharge, but I opted not to do that.

Burrow Mambo 4 Piece Sectional Bottom part

One of my favorite things about the Mambo Sectional is that its modular, so you can arrange it multiple ways and even pull sections out to adjust the size of the sofa. The Mambo Collection also offers 4-, 6-, 7- and 8-piece sectional options, along with chair, loveseat and standard sofa options.

The Mambo 4-Piece Sectional is about the middle of the road when it comes to sofa prices. I wouldnt describe it as a budget pick (its $5,000+ for the leather option). Still, I wouldnt consider it a massive splurge when considering the prices of similar sectionals from different retailers. (Financing options are available via Affirm if that appeals to you.) Plus, I think it looks incredibly sleek in person.

The Mambo is definitely a longer, shorter sectional with deep seats. It feels sturdy when sitting and lounging on it because its wide and low to the ground. We can fit four people sitting upright on it at once. My partner and I have a new baby, and with that comes a lot of opportunity for stains, but the smooth leather surface is super easy to wipe clean after quick spills and messes.

Initially, I was worried about pets with long nails scratching or ripping the leather, but my dog has done surprisingly well on this sectional (granted, we keep his nails trimmed). The leather surface on this sectional feels thick, as though it would take a good amount of force and a sharp object to puncture through the surface, which, thankfully, hasnt happened yet.

Overall, the Mambo Leather Sectional is very firm to sit on. A person of average height will sit deeply on the sofa due to the wide seat surface, but they wont sink into the sofa. This is something to keep in mind: If youre looking for an extra-cushioned sofa to sink into, the Mambo is not it. However, I like its firmness. It has served nicely in our home office, where sinking into a couch while typing on my laptop would result in strain. While I cant speak for everyone, it has been easy for me to slide on and off, and I do deal with chronic back pain.

The back of the sectional is rather short, so thats something to keep in mind if youre looking for head and neck support. Id recommend this sofa for a basement or den, perhaps somewhere youll be entertaining or hanging out, where youll want to sit back but still be alert. I probably wouldnt put this sectional in a high-traffic living area where people want to snuggle up and get extra cozy. For me, the sectional is more about looks than comfort, and I think it looks excellent in our home office space.

Burrow has a 30-day return policy for all products. However, a return shipping fee of 10% of the purchase price applies, and the product’s original packaging must remain intact. The fee is always capped at $250 per returned item. Burrows warranty covers defective or damaged items and does not require any return shipping fees.

Burrows furniture comes with a one-year warranty that covers defects in materials or workmanship. You can add additional coverage through Mulberry for an extended warranty period and accidents that may cause damage to the furniture. See their full warranty detailsfor whats covered and whats not.

Pros

  • Modular design allows for multiple arrangements
  • Modern design appeal
  • Multiple fabric and size options
  • Fabric holds up to daily use and wear
  • Matching ottoman and other furniture available at Burrow
  • Durable fabric is easy to wipe clean
  • Easy setup, no tools needed
  • Financing available
  • Free shipping
  • Limited, one-year warranty

Cons

  • Very firm, may not be the best choice for people wanting a lot of cushion
  • Seat depth may be too long for some

FAQ

Burrow Mambo 4 Piece Sectional

Are Burrow couches machine washable?

No. Burrow does not recommend removing couch cushions or putting them in the washing machine for any reason. Instead, they recommend spot-cleaning stains by blotting them and using a solution of warm water. They do not recommend using any cleaning agent on their leather products.

Can you add on to your Burrow couch?

Burrows modular furniture is made to become smaller and larger depending on your needs and space, even as it changes over time. For a brief period, I turned my 4-piece Mambo Sectional into a 3-piece sectional for the bedroom.

How long has Burrow been in business?

The brand launched in 2017 and became notable for its direct-to-consumer model and modular seating options.

Does Burrow have other modular leather sectionals?

The Mambo sectional is Burrows true, European-inspired block-style modular sectional, but the brand also carries other leather modular sectionals. If youre looking for a modular leather sectional with more leather colors and tapered legs, the Nomad Sectional is a super popular pick. The Field Sectional resembles the Nomad but has fewer sharp lines and straight legs.

Final Verdict

Ive owned Burrows Mambo 4-Piece Sectional for almost a year now, and Ive had great luck with it. It was incredibly easy to set up and has been even easier to move from room to room as weve adapted our home to our growing family. I love that we dont have to worry about spilling things on the sectional since messes wipe away easily, and it looks almost exactly the same as the day I got it.

Overall, I like the look of the sectional and think it fits perfectly in our home office space. I recommend this sofa if you want to furnish a den or office. I wouldnt put this sectional in my main living space as it doesnt provide the size and comfort my family needs for cozy movie nights or lazy Sundays. However, if you live alone and want a convenient sectional that looks fantastic, then the Mambo may be the perfect addition to your living room.

Best Overall Cooling Sheets

Rest Evercool Cooling Sheet Set

Pros:

  • Impressive cooling technology
  • Quick-dry material
  • Anti-microbial material
  • Lightweight and breathable
  • Stretchy material
  • Hold up wash after wash

Cons:

  • Limited color and size options
  • Light color shows marks and stains easily
Fhma24 Rest Evercool Cooling Sheet Set Mary Henn Ssedit 10

When I opened the Rest Evercool Cooling Sheet Set, I immediately felt how lightweight and cool the sheets were to touch. Getting into these sheets sent a cooling sensation through my legs, even when I was already hot. Theyre super breathable and stretchy, too, so airflow from a fan or open window will be felt through the sheets. I also love that these sheets are made with an anti-microbial material, so I can feel good about snuggling into a clean bed at night.

I ordered the sheets in frosty peach, a creamy yellow color with pink tones. (They look slightly darker and pinker than pictured online.) They also come in grey and blue, but I wish more options were available. Though there are few colorways, the sheets are incredibly high-quality. The stretchy, breathable fabric is thin but not see-through. Best of all, they dont wrinkle like many of the other sheet sets I tested, and they look as good as new after washingwhich was not always the case with other sheets I tried.

My only complaint with the Rest Evercool Sheets was that they seemed to get marked up easily and show stains. Most of the time, they came out in the wash with no trouble, but if youre easily bothered by marks and stains, Id recommend opting for the grey color, as I think imperfections would be less visible.

These sheets cost about $300 per set, but you cant beat their cooling properties. They also seem resistant to tearing or ripping and hold up wash after wash. Spring for the Rest Evercool Comforter to complete the coolest bedding set.

Helix MattressKATIE BANDURSKI/FAMILY HANDYMAN

Best Overall Box Mattress

Helix Midnight Elite

Pros:

  • Medium-support mattress that provides deep, restful sleep
  • Luxurious feeling akin to a hotel bed
  • No box spring required
  • Ships in two boxes for easy setup
  • 100-night sleep trial and 15-year warranty
  • Made-to-order in the USA
  • OEKO-TEX and CertiPUR-US certified fabrics and foam
  • If not satisfied with firmness, can swap out insert

Cons:

  • On the pricey side
  • Only works with platform-style bed frames

While it might not hurt to try and save money on toppers and protectors, Dr. Wang cautions against penny-pinching when purchasing a mattress. “You really can’t put a price on getting a good night’s rest!” he says.

If you are looking for the best mattress in a box and are willing to invest in something high quality, Senior Editor Katie Bandurski recommends the Helix Midnight Elite. While it might not be the cheapest mattress in a box, this top-of-the-line option offers five layers of high-density medium firmness foam.

The mattress weighs a total of 172 pounds, but luckily, Helix divides the base and comfort insert into two separate boxes. This makes the process of hauling it up or down any stairs a whole lot easier. Immediately, Bandurski was impressed by the lack of any “new mattress smells” and that she was able to assemble the bed solo. Another unique aspect of the Helix is that if you aren’t happy with the firmness level, you can simply swap out the insert instead of having to purchase a new mattress altogether.

Helix Matress

The Helix Midnight Elite “looks like it came from a luxury mattress store, not a box,” notes Bandurski. In just a few weeks, her sleep quality “drastically improved,” as did her back pain. She adds that the mattress does a great job of minimizing movement, which equates to less sleep interruptions and higher quality sleep. “The Helix’s five foam layers and hundreds of individually wrapped steel coils do a great job absorbing shock,” she says.

Why You Don’t Need a Top Sheet on Your Bed https://www.familyhandyman.com/article/top-sheet/ Fri, 22 Mar 2024 19:56:15 +0000 Are you Team Top Sheet, or No Top Sheet? If you're uncommitted (what?!) we've got expert advice to help you make a decision.

The post Why You Don’t Need a Top Sheet on Your Bed appeared first on Family Handyman.

]]>
Another day, another internet debate. Did you see the blue or the gold dress? Do you dust or vacuum first? And today’s riveting entry: Team top sheet or no top sheet?

Yes, we’re talking about bed linens. Do you love snuggling under a fluffy, washable duvet? Or do you prefer layers of sheets and blankets that look great and are easy to swap out depending on the season?

Top sheets go back millennia. They’re easy to wash, dry and fold, and they’re versatile, too, often pulling double duty as a bottom sheet. (The next time you’re in a hotel, check out the bottom sheet on your bed. It’s likely a top sheet folded under the mattress.)

So where do you come down? Let’s look at the pros and cons, according to a sleep expert.

What Is a Top Sheet?

Top sheets go underneath your blanket, comforter or duvet (and on top of you, while you’re in the bed).

“Top sheets also called flat sheets are typically sold as part of a bedding set in the United States,” says Sleep Foundation product expert Tom Ryan, Ph.D. “The idea is that a top sheet acts as a protective barrier between you and your comforter or duvet to keep it cleaner and more hygienic.”

When it’s time to do laundry, top sheets save you from washing the comforter every time you strip your bed. But do you need one? “It’s all a matter of personal preference, of course,” Ryan says. Let’s present the evidence.

Team Top Sheet

Are you a top sheet user? If so, you’re in good company. Mattress company Casper says 58% of Americans like top sheets, with older sleepers more attached than younger.

Why would top sheets reign? A few reasons:

  • Comfort:“You might want to sleep with a top sheet and a light blanket in the warmer months, or if you live in a warm or humid climate,” Ryan says. Who doesn’t love sliding between crisp, smooth sheets, especially during the dog days of a triple-digit Texas summer?
  • Aesthetics: “If you like the look of a layered bed,” Ryan says, “a top sheet adds a nice visual touch if you fold it back.” Of course, coverlets and cheery blankets and soft, fluffy duvets can be just as attractive, but we’re conditioned by beds with a peek of fresh sheet up top.
  • The ick factor:Mattress company Amerisleep commissioned a study on germy sheets. Germophobes, beware: Sheets have 25,000 times more bacteria than the bathroom door knob, and that’s after just one week of use! Tossing a top sheet in the wash with the rest of the linens is an easy way to combat those germs.

No Top Sheet Needed

Despite the evidence so generously presented above, “I’m firmly in the camp of Team No Top Sheet,” Ryan says. “I stopped using a top sheet several years ago, and I appreciate the simplicity of my bed.”

Making the bed takes no time at all just hop out and draw up the duvet. “If I shift or move around at night, I don’t feel like I’m getting twisted in extra fabric,” Ryan says.

Europeans threw off the tyranny of the top sheet eons ago, when the duvet became popular across the continent. “Using a top sheet is uncommon in places like Europe,” Ryan says. As noted in the Casper study, many Americans are getting rid of the flat sheet, too. Ryan says the numbers are “mostly driven by younger people ditching the top sheet altogether.”

But what about the germs? Well, just as you would wash your sheets, you need to wash the duvet cover or blanket that you’re using against your body.

“[A]s long as you have a duvet cover or a comforter that you can wash weekly or every other week,” Ryan says, “a top sheet isn’t really necessary.”

5 Tips for Decluttering and Organizing Your Closet https://www.familyhandyman.com/article/declutter-closet-clothing/ Thu, 21 Mar 2024 21:35:56 +0000 Five decluttering pros share their time-tested tips for opening up your closet space, and in turn, freeing up your mind.

The post 5 Tips for Decluttering and Organizing Your Closet appeared first on Family Handyman.

A jammed-up closet is not just an eyesore; it’s a stress-maker. But chances are you only wear a small percentage of those duds, which means decluttering your closet isn’t as daunting a task as it soundsand the result will be freeing.

“Having a closet that only has the items you love, where you can find everything easily, is like a welcome hug in the morning. It can help you start off your day in a positive frame of mind,” says Michele Vig, founder of Neat Little Nest.

If you’ve been yearning for a streamlined closet, here’s how to master the decluttering process with tips from five master organizers.

Why You Should Declutter Your Closet

Decluttering your closet, or any space, makes it easier to find the resources you have, plus it reduces anxiety. It also saves you money and helps you become more sustainable, by helping you avoid buying things you don’t need.

“When we accumulate excess, we’re often contributing to overconsumption, which places unnecessary strain on the planet’s resources,” says Ben Hardman, creator of Tiny Eco Home Life. “By thoughtfully downsizing, you’re not only simplifying and minimizing your life, but you’ll also be reducing your environmental footprint over the long term.”

Tips for Decluttering Your Closet

Studies show that we wear about 20% of our clothing 80% of the time, so the ultimate goal of decluttering your closet is to get to the point where you like and wear every item inside, says Courtney Cummings, founder of The Stylish Organizer. Here’s how to accomplish that.

Pull everything out

Yes, every last bit. “Seeing all that you own will have a big visual impact when brought together,” says Julie Leonard, a certified life and decluttering coach.

Spread everything out, including clothing and accessories not stored in your closet, so you can see the full extent of what you’re dealing with. As you pull out your clothes, separate them into categories like jeans, dress pants, blouses, etc. You can also use this as an opportunity to dust the shelves and vacuum before putting your clothes back in.

Edit by category

5 Tips For Decluttering Your Closet

Focus on one category of clothing at a time, such as T-shirts or skirts, systematically weighing the importance of each item. “That way, you don’t end up keeping twelve pairs of light khaki pants or five black cardigans,” says Cummings.

To decide what to keep, ask yourself:

  • Do you wear it? If you haven’t in the past year (or two for winter garb), it’s probably time to let it go.
  • Does it fit? Try it on, and if it doesn’t, it’s time to part ways. “Clear out space for clothes you’ll actually wear, and stop holding onto things ‘just in case,” says Tina Priestly, CEO of Ready, Set, Refresh.
  • Can you store it? Consider storing seasonal clothes and shoes in temporary storage during the fall and winter months, says Elizabeth Dodson, co-founder of HomeZada.
  • Does it make you feel bad? “Perhaps you associate an item with a bad time in your life,” says Leonard. “Maybe you don’t like the texture, or it was expensive and then you never wore it? All of these items should go.”
  • Is it impractical? Be ruthless with these, says Leonard. “Those boots that rub your heel, the top that is see-through, the dress that doesn’t fit well, you will never wear them.”
  • Is it stained or damaged? Keep a few for rags, but the rest goes.
  • Do you have duplicates? You probably don’t need 10 pairs of jeans.
  • Does it resonate with you? It’s ok to let it go, even if it was a gift. Someone else will enjoy it more.
  • Do you like to color? If not, you will never feel your best in it.
  • Will you actually mend it? If you’re not ever going to fix those ripped jeans, it’s probably time to let them go.
  • Is it clothing or a keepsake? “I love my concert t-shirts and have some I’ve had for decades,” says Leonard. “Keep this memorabilia, but store it in a memory box, not in your wardrobe.
  • What are you saving it for? Don’t wait for a special occasion. Either sell it or use it. “Wear your good underwear or that cashmere jumper and feel your best,” says Leonard.

Create a maybe pile

Don’t let indecision hinder your progress. Create a “maybe” pile to revisit after you have gone through everything, says Leonard. You may be more ruthless the second time around.

“Or hang your clothes with the coat hangers facing the same way and when you wear an item, turn the coat hanger the other way,” says Leonard. “After six months, see which clothes you wear.”

Go through it again

Cummings suggests sorting through your keep pile one more time to double-check your thoughts on each piece. “Then, you have done it!” she says. You have now intentionally gone through each item in your closet and determined what will be allowed back in. That deserves a gold star!”

Sort the purge

Put the clothes you’re ditching into three piles: donate, sell and recycle. And don’t forget to invite friends and family over, which can be a quick way to get rid of a few favorites.

Discard everything swiftly

Two of our experts emphasized not getting stuck on trying to figure out the perfect place to donate or sell items, since it’s tempting to reclaim lingerers. “Come to terms with the need for them to move along, and trust that the local donations facility that serves your community will get it into the best next hand,” says Vig.

However, Leonard cautions against making rash decisions, lest you end up with decluttering regret. Consider bagging up items to see if you look for them over the next six months. If not, then donate the bag.

Create an organizing system

5 Tips For Decluttering Your Closet

Once you’re free of your closet clutter, keep it that way by updating your system.

To help with this:

  • Assess your closet space. Does it need another hanging rod, cubby organizers or shelving?
  • Invest in quality hangers, and use the same kind for a clean, organized look. “Slim velvet hangers work best for lighter clothes, while wooden hangers are perfect for heavier items like jackets,” says Priestly.
  • Buy or DIY a shoe rack to maximize space. “Personally, I prefer racks that keep shoes off the floor,” says Dodson.
  • Regularly maintain your new freedom. “My seasonal switch outs and decluttering sessions are done in under an hour,” says Vig.

How To Quickly Declutter Your Closet

If you’re in a rush to conquer your closet:

  • Do a quick pick-through, getting rid of obvious items you no longer wear. “This will make a big difference quickly and make the rest of your organizing easier,” says Priestly.
  • Break the task into small bites, such as your sock drawer or T-shirts. “Even 15 minutes of thoughtful decluttering a day can go a long way to helping you achieve your goals.” Says Cummings.
  • Hire a professional organizer or find a friend to help. “A friend can help keep you on task, get donations together and clean your shelves while you’re making decisions.” Says Vig.

Bat Bugs vs. Bed Bugs: What’s the Difference? https://www.familyhandyman.com/article/bat-bugs-vs-bed-bugs/ Thu, 21 Mar 2024 17:11:16 +0000 How do you know if you have bat bugs vs. bed bugs? Both are closely related and look alike. We explain ways to tell these little "suckers" apart.

The post Bat Bugs vs. Bed Bugs: What’s the Difference? appeared first on Family Handyman.

]]>
comparison of Bat Bug Vs Bed Bug with labels

Most of us have heard of bed bugs, the dreaded blood-sucking parasites that are so laborious to get rid of. My brother happens to be on his third extermination attempt at this moment. They’ve probably become so ubiquitous because our global society tends to keep them in good business, as we unwittingly carry them from place to place. But have you heard of the bed bug’s relative, the bug?

Bat bugs are also blood-feeding parasites that use bats as their primary food source. “The two are so closely related that they share the same genus: Cimex,” says Kait Chapman, an Extension Educator and Urban Entomologist the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.

But we’re less likely to run into bat bugs, and when we do, their bites tend to be less annoying. Here’s how to tell them apart, and what else to know about bat bugs vs bed bugs.

Bat Bugs

Bat bugs are small insects that feed primarily on bat blood. If no bats are available, they will occasionally feed on birds and mammals, including humans.

“Bat bugs are often mistaken for bed bugs as they share similarities in size, shape and color,” says Emma Grace Crumbley, an entomologist at Mosquito Squad. “Like bed bugs, bat bugs are not social and do not live in colonies, nests or hives.”

What do bat bugs look like?

Bat bugs are wingless, flat, oval-shaped insects. Adults grow up to 1/4 inch long, about the size of an apple seed. They are colored brown, beige or reddish-brown.

“The biggest visual difference is that bat bugs possess longer and more hairs on their body than a bed bug,” says Ian Williams, an entomologist and technical services manager at Orkin. “But it usually takes a professional and a magnifying lens to tell bat bugs and bed bugs apart.”

Where do bat bugs live?

Bat bugs travel on the skin of bats and, therefore, tend to live where bats nest. When bats are excluded or when overwintering ones depart, bat bugs can be left behind. At that point, they may start searching for another host, making their way into parts of the home inhabited by humans, such as rooms on upper-level floors, where they hide in dark crevices and fabric folds.

“They will even latch onto mice and rats, providing a convenient method of entry into kitchens or basements,” says Williams. “Then they can hide in carpeting and furniture for extended periods, as they can survive for more than a year without feeding.”

Do bat bugs bite humans?

Yes, if no bat hosts are available, bat bugs can resort to biting humans; however, you’re less likely to encounter them than bed bugs. “Their mouthparts are so small that their bites often go undetected,” says Crumbley. “However, some individuals with insect allergies may experience small, swollen and itchy welts.”

Are bat bugs dangerous?

Not really. They are not known to transmit any diseases, but their bites can cause skin irritation, and if you scratch a bite open, it could become infected.

How to get rid of bat bugs

If you have bat bugs in your home, it could be a sign that you also have bats roosting somewhere in your house. If that’s the case, you might want to weigh the merits of a bat exclusion. Then, remove bat bugs by:

  • Sanitizing infested items, such as linens;
  • Vacuuming molding, baseboards, seals and carpeting; and
  • Applying an insecticide (follow instructions exactly, and use only EPA-approved products).

If the infestation is serious, you might want to call a certified professional pest control company.

Bed Bugs

Bed bugs are also small, wingless insects that feed on human blood, usually at night while the host sleeps. They are best known for infesting bedding, though they can live on and hide in other fabrics, including towels and carpets.

“Bed bugs are not social insects, forming nests or colonies or nests like ants or bees, but they are rarely seen by themselves,” says Crumbley. “Though bed bugs are best known for targeting human hosts, bed bugs can also take blood meals from a range of animals including domestic cats and dogs.”

What do bed bugs look like?

Adult bed bugs are also about the size of an apple seed, with a flat, oval-shaped body, no wings and a brownish-to-reddish color. They look remarkably similar to bed bugs.

“There’s a myth that bed bugs are too small to see with the naked eye, but that’s not true,” says Williams.

Where do bed bugs live?

Bed bugs most often hide in areas people frequent, such as mattresses and couches. They’re nocturnal, so you’re unlikely to see them during the day.

“Bed bugs are also notorious for hitchhiking on belongings, which is how they are spread from household to household,” says Chapman.

Bed bugs are also positively thigmotactic, says Crumbley, which means they like feeling pressure on all sides of their bodies. “This means that bed bugs aren’t going to hang out on top of your sheets, but rather bed bugs like to be in the wrinkles, in between the sheets, in the cracks and crevices of the bed frame and in the mattress itself to feel safe and secure as they wait for their next meal,” she says.

Do bed bugs bite humans?

Yes. Their bites often appear as small, flat or raised areas that are red, swollen, blistered and often itchy and painful. For some people, and even pets, they cause severe discomfort.

“Bites may not become obvious for several days,” says Williams. “However, many people do not react at all to the bite of a bed bug, so many bites leave no mark and go completely unnoticed.”

Are bed bugs dangerous?

Not really. Beyond red and itchy skin, bed bugs do not spread disease. However, in extreme cases, bites can swell dramatically and become blistery, and scratching them can lead to a secondary infection. If you or your pet develop a rash after being bitten by a bed bug, avoid scratching the affected area, and if it becomes infected, contact a medical professional, says Williams.

How to get rid of bed bugs

Getting rid of bed bugs is difficult, so most people call pest management professionals. It often takes a multistep approach, combining chemical insecticides with non-chemical treatments like vacuuming and heat. Some situations may even warrant fumigation.

“Because bed bugs are small and fairly flat, they can easily hide in many areas throughout a room, making controlling bed bugs especially challenging,” says Crumbley

Your best defense against bedbugs is prevention.

  • Be wary of bed bugs in hotels, which could get into your luggage.
  • Inspect new furniture and purchases before bringing them inside.
  • Seal up doors and baseboards between rooms.

“In multiunit housing complexes, bed bugs have been known to travel along and through wall voids, using plumbing and electrical pathways,” says Williams.

Nolah Evolution 15 Review: This Mattress is a Dream for Side Sleepers https://www.familyhandyman.com/article/nolah-mattress-review/ Tue, 06 Feb 2024 17:17:31 +0000 Yes, I’m writing this Nolah mattress review from bed–it’s that comfortable!

The post Nolah Evolution 15 Review: This Mattress is a Dream for Side Sleepers appeared first on Family Handyman.

As a Shopping Editor, it is quite literally my job to connect readers with life-changing products. And while the best vacuum cleaners make chores a breeze and a super-cozy sectional takes movie nights to the next level, few products make or break your day like a mattress.

After all, most adults spend upwards of six hours between the sheets. A good mattresstailored to your bodys needscan minimize pain, keep you cool and, of course, encourage deep, restful sleep.

The most important features in a mattress for side sleepers are a medium to medium-firm firmness level, a contouring or plush comfort layer and adequate support for the hips and shoulders, says pediatric sleep trainer and founder of Luna Leaps, Chelsey Borson.

In my experience, the Nolah Evolution 15 fits the bill.

What is a Nolah Mattress?

White Nolah Mattress on bed

Nolah is an online mattress retailer, specializing in beds that support side sleepers. Theyre made in the U.S. and feature foam, latex or a hybrid of both materials. As of press time, the brand offers five core options: Evolution, Signature, Original, Natural and Nurture. Most beds are available in twin, twin XL, full, queen, king, California king and split king sizes. The Nurture, which is designed for kids, is only available in twin, twin XL and full sizes.

The brand offers an assortment of firmness levels, as well as options specifically designed for plus-size sleepers. Nolah mattresses also feature breathable fabrics and cooling technology to keep you comfortable.

While the brand has minimal showrooms, each Nolah mattress comes with a 120-night sleep guarantee and a lifetime warrantyso you can rest easy. In my experience, trying a mattress at home for multiple nights is always better than laying on a floor model for five minutes.

We Tried It

Nolah Evolution 15 Mattress

Meet Nolah's deluxe hybrid mattress, rated 2023's Best Mattress for Side Sleepers by Sleep Foundation.

Nolah Evolution Mattress Features

Nolah Mattress features card

The Nolah Evolution 15 is the brands best-selling bed. It features nine layers, starting with a strong non-skid fabric layer for durable casing and ending with a plush, organic cotton cover that uses ArcticTex fibers to keep you cool.

Choose from seven sizes, then either plush, luxury firm (my selection) or firm comfort levels. The Evolution is also available in a Comfort+ selection for sleepers over 300 pounds.

The Evolution is compatible with platform beds (no box spring required!) and comes with two fluffy pillows. It arrives on your doorstep in a single box, and a queen size mattress weighs 115 pounds.

How We Tested It

Ive been testing the Nolah mattress since December 2023. In that time Ive napped, worked, read and slept through the night on this bed.

I also made sure to test the key components side sleepers need to consider when choosing a mattress. According to Chelsey, those factors include pressure relief, support for proper spinal alignment and motion isolation.

Setup and Delivery

A woman measuring the mattress box through measuring tape

The Nolah Evolution 15 arrived on my door in a single blue box measuring 47 inches tall by 17 inches wide. I wasnt home for delivery, and there was no signature needed. It took two people to carry into the house, and the handles make lifting a breeze.

Once inside, I was able to set up the mattress by myself. I laid the box on the floor (the dream-theme box is so cute!) and slowly shuffled the plastic-wrapped mattress out. There were no leaks in the vacuum seal and everything was wrapped nice and tight.

Nolah Mattress wrapped in plastic on a bed frame

For me, the most challenging part was lifting the sealed mattress onto the bed frame. I would recommend a helper for this step.

Next, I (carefully!) used a scissors to cut away at the packaging. After puncturing the vacuum-seal bag, the entire mattress inflated to size in a matter of seconds. All in, set up took about 15 minutes.

After tossing the packaging, I came back to the bedroom expecting an off-gassing odor as the mattress settled. To my happy surprise, there was virtually no scentand I have a very keen sense of smell. The mattress was set up in my guest bedroom, which doubles as my office, and I was able to work at my desk for the rest of the day with no disruption.

Making the Bed

Nolah recommends letting the mattress expand for 24 hours before sleeping on it. So, the next day, I went in with a mattress protector and bedding to set up shop. You could also add one of our favorite mattress toppers during this step, but after testing, the Nolah is so plush I didnt find it necessary.

The included Nolah pillows were also vacuum sealed, and I found that they needed some manual fluffing to find their shape.

Making the bed was a breeze. I love that the 15-inch depth is thick enough to provide tons of support but not so thick I need deep-pocket sheets. After a few minutes of work, it was time for the fun part: sleeping!

Motion Isolation

Cranberry juice on one side of the bed

Now, Ill admit. Ive always had trouble sleeping. And while I am prone to tossing and turning before bed, my husband is out like a light in mere minutes. I hate waking him up with my restlessness, so motion transfer is an important factor.

The Nolah Evolution does an excellent job absorbing my anxious energy. On those nights when I shuffle around like a fish out of wateror heck, give up and get out bedmy husband isnt disturbed.

Just for kicks, I put a glass of cranberry juice on one side of the bed while rolling around on the otherjust to see if it would move. There were some waves on the surface of the glass, but it didnt come close to tipping over. While (hopefully) no one is using their bed as a coaster, this test confirms that the Evolution provides a sturdy surface in any situation.

Edge Support

Since we share a bed, edge support is also top of mind. After all, theres no worse feeling than waking up and feeling like youre about to fall overboard! The Nolah Evolution offers a thick rim of piping that gently signifies where the edge of the bed is.

I can rest my entire body weight within an inch of the border and still feel comfortable. As someone who shares a bed with my husband, a bevy of pillows, blankets and weighted stuffed animals, I appreciate knowing Im supported no matter how much I shift in my sleep.

Pressure Relief

Arguably the most important factor when choosing a mattress, the Nolah Evolution is best in its class at providing support for my head, neck and spine. As a side sleeper, Im already putting a lot of pressure on my shoulders and hips. Without proper support, Im at risk of misalignment andaches and pains.

The luxury firm support offers the Goldilocks of firmnessnot too soft, not too hard. It’s also suitable for my husband, who alternates between sleeping on his side and his back. Theres also a substantial weight difference between us and the Nolah does a good job accommodating both of our body types.

I will say, however, that if youre a stomach sleeper, the Nolah may not be a good fit. The pressure relief felt on the back or side is likely a little too firm for your comfort

Cleaning and Maintenance

Because the Nolah Evolution has so many layers, its designed for use in only one direction. That means theres no need to flip your mattress. That said, the brand does recommend rotating every three to six months.

As for deeper cleaning, strip the bed and vacuum to remove dust mites and other allergens. You can also spot-treat any stains with dish-soap, just let dry completely before remaking the bed. Read our full guide to disinfecting a mattress for further instructions.

Editors Note: Our testing efforts took place during a Wisconsin winter, so the stay-cool technology was not highly relevant. We plan to revisit our review in the upcoming warmer months.

Pros

  • Incredible support, especially for side sleepers
  • Minimal motion transfer; ideal for sleeping next to someone
  • Solid edge support all the way around
  • Durable materials
  • Minimal off-gassing
  • 120-night sleep guarantee
  • Lifetime warranty
  • CertiPUR-US certified foams and fiberglass-free

Cons

  • On the pricier side, but not the most expensive model weve tested
  • Difficult to set up by yourself

Per the brands website, Nolah mattresses are designed and assembled in Arizona.

What Other Reviewers Had to Say

Nolah Mattress on a bed

Im not the only one enjoying sound, soothing sleep. The Nolah Evolution boasts a near perfect 4.9-star customer rating.

Verified buyer, Rainbow Thompson, shares, I bought the recommended Luxury Firm. No more back pain. It cradles while at the same time is supportively firm. A perfect marriage. Like cream in coffee, it is refreshing. Often I go ahhhhhhh when I get in. Hubby weighs around 280 & Im 190. He is 6 foot and Im 510 and it is just right for us both. He had been waking up with back pain every day. But thats no longer.

This is our 2nd purchase of a Nolah mattress, and were just as impressed with this one as we were the first, shares 5-star reviewer, Elizabeth Watson. Expecting to replace a guest bed mattress within a year, and well definitely buy again from Nolah. Well worth the cost. Absolutely great sleep from the 1st night.

Verified buyer, Dannette Steck, appreciates the quality, saying: Weve had the Nolah Evolution 15 King Luxury Firm for over 6 months now. So far, we are very happy and sleeping comfortably. No visible signs of body dips nor do we feel any when were on the mattress. Time will tell how it holds up, but so far, this has become our favorite mattress.

Final Verdict

There are thousands of mattresses to choose from, so narrowing down your options is quite the task! Luckily, weve tested dozens of the best boxed mattresses from some of the most popular mail-order brands, including Purple, Saatva, Nectar, Sealy and Zinus. We love the Nolah Evolution has a mid-price option for side sleepers, especially those with back and neck pain. I never thought Id find a mattress that compares to my beloved Helix Midnight Elite, but the Nolah comes pretty closefor a fraction of the price.

Psst! Do you know the signs its time to replace your mattress? There are a shocking number of downsides to sleeping on an old mattress.

Where to Buy a Nolah Mattress

We Tried It

Nolah Evolution 15 Mattress

The Nolah Evolution offers responsive pressure relief and targeted support where side sleepers need it most. And with active cooling technology, this mattress is a sleep-transforming luxury.

When picking out a mattress online, read customer reviews, check for trial periods and return policies, and look for mattresses with certifications like CertiPUR-US or OEKO-TEX to ensure quality and safety, says Chelsey. The Nolah Evolution checks all those boxesand moreso you can buy with confidence.

Shop directly from the brand or on Wayfair. Sweet dreams await!

As a hot sleeper, I wanted to know if these luxury Carihola sheets would deliver on their promise to regulate my body temperature. Would these Cariloha Resort Bamboo Bed Sheets have a five-star feel and deliver a good nights sleep? After all, the word resort is in the name, and I want my bed to feel like a sanctuary (who doesn’t?). I had to see for myself.

Cariloha is known for making soft and sustainable products. Dedicated to making a difference for people and the planet, Cariloha is a certified B Corp, adhering to the highest standards of social and environmental practices. Hence, sustainable bamboo is at the heart of their high-end bedding.

What are Cariloha Sheets?

Cariloha Sheets packed in a box

Whether you prefer crisp percale sheets, classic twill weave, lyocell or sateen sheets, youll find a style and feel that makes you happy. For reference, I tried the Resort Bamboo Bed Sheets, which have a beautiful silky sateen finish.

The Resort Bamboo Bed Sheets are made of 100% viscose from bamboo. Bamboo is a sustainable plant and is naturally cooler than cotton to help to wick away moisture.

Hot sleepers and luxury seekers alike will love these sumptuous sheets. But the best part is that they feel better than silk against the skin (in my humble opinion). Paired with a cozy comforter, youll feel like youre on vacation every day.

Cariloha Sheets

Viscose from bamboo sheets feature a premium sateen finish and advanced box-stitch seams.

Cariloha Sheets Features

Grey Cariloha Sheets with a silver trim

Cariloha sheets are used on major cruise lines and are known for their soft feel, cooling effects and durability. In addition to being moisture-wicking, bamboo naturally repels odors and allergens and has thermal-regulating properties. The silky soft texture paired with the breathability of these sheets makes for a comfortable night’s sleep.

Packaged beautifully in a box, the set includes a fitted sheet, a top sheet and two pillowcases available in Queen, King, Cal-King and Split-King sizes. You can choose among eight soothing colors.

I measured the corner seams of the fitted sheet at 14 inches. The 14-inch pocket fit my 12-inch Queen-size mattress perfectly, with about 2 inches left over to tuck between the frame to keep it securely in place. Cariloha uses box stitch seams, which makes the sheets more durable.

Cariloha offers free shipping over $100, plus a 100-night return policy, but be prepared to pay return shipping if these sheets don’t work for you. We like that Cariloha offers payment plans through Affirm if paying a lump sum of $300 for a pair of sheets seems steep.

How We Tested It

Cariloha sheets in a dryer

When evaluating the Cariloha Resort sheets, I looked at things like price, material, color options, durability, wrinkle resistance and how well they held up to washing and drying.

I chose the resort sheets with the sateen finish in the color blush. The blush color is very muted and restful, and the fabric is beyond luxurious. It has weight to it, yet its the opposite of crisp cotton sheets. The Resort sheets drape and flow like silk. (And feel even better!)

Cariloha Sheets threads hanging and being washed

Ive used these sheets for several months, and theyve held up well. After the first wash, I noticed some color and sheen fading as well as some threads hanging, but the seams and stitching have stayed secure after a dozen washes.

Wrinkled pillow sheets on a washing maching

Per the instructions, I washed them in cold water and dried them with low heat. I opted to use the delicate cycle and removed the agitator on my Whirlpool washer. Each time, the sheets came out softer with no pilling. In every case, the pillowcases and edge of the top sheet come out with significant wrinkles. It’s as if the stitching shrunk, leaving a ruching effect. Honestly, I was disappointed, because the Resort bamboo sateen sheets would need to be ironed if I was going to use them in the guest room. I can’t wait for spring to hang them on the clothesline to see if that helps to avoid the wrinkles in the pillowcases.

When I first got the sheets, fall was upon us. Paired with a light-down comforter, these sheets were perfect, When it was time to turn the heat on, I added the Cariloha Bamboo Fleece Blanket in Onyx. (BTW, I love, love, love this blanket.) A few weeks later, I was ready to switch to flannel sheets because the Cariloha sheets felt so cool to the touch. I found myself sweating with the flannel sheets and went back to the temperature-regulating Resort Bamboo Sheets.

The subtle sheen and smooth finish make these sheets a little slippery. The pillowcase tends to slip off my ultra-flat down pillow for back sleepers but stays on other pillows without a problem. Ill admit, Ive had more substantial elastic on other fitted sheets. But this sheet never slipped off the corners no matter how much I tossed and turned.

Pros

  • Silky soft luxury
  • Cooling and thermal regulating properties
  • Moisture-wicking
  • Sustainable and chemical-free bamboo
  • Environmentally friendly
  • 14-inch pocket seam
  • 0% financing available
  • 100-day return policy

Cons

  • Wrinkles easily
  • Color and sheen fade after first washing (but get even softer!)
  • Pricey

What Other Reviewers Had to Say

Amazon five-star reviewer Genevieve L. Hannon writes, We love our sheet setking set in blue. Our sheets came a touch crisper and shinier than we wished, but just as everyone before us has said, the sheets get softer after sleeping in them and especially after washing them once. They are truly cooling, which is nice for me since I am peri-menopausal and I night sweat every night.

Callie Lampe also left a five-star review saying, Ohhhhh my goodness. I can’t even begin to say how much I LOVE these sheets. Yes, they are pricey….In my opinion, they are worth every. Single. Penny. I’m pretty picky about my sheets…especially if I’m going to sleep sans clothing! These are the softest sheet I’ve ever touched, and quite possibly the softest thing that’s ever touched my skin. They are just completely perfect. They are also cool, which I appreciate as a warm sleeper. The blue color is perfect….Love how beautiful the shade is!

I dont want to get out of bed, states Christian Jones, adding, The Resort sheets are absolutely AMAZING! The softest sheets that I have ever felt. They come packaged nicely in a really nice box with magnetic closure. I bought the set in the color Blue Lagoon and they are beautiful! These sheets are a little pricey but they are so worth the price. I am a ‘bedding snob’ and I believe that you get what you pay for. Go ahead and buy them! You will not be disappointed!

Product Comparison

Cariloha Sheets on the bed

In addition to the Cariloha Resort Bamboo Bed Sheets I tried, Cariloha offers the Retreat Bamboo Sheets, which feature a sateen finish made from bamboo lyocell. The Retreat sheets have added corner straps for security and orientation labels. If you like a crisper sheet, Cariloha also offers the Resort Percale Bamboo Bed Sheet Set (sans the sateen finish), as well as the Classic Bamboo Bed Sheet Set with extra-deep pockets in a twill weave finish.

At $329, the Cariloha Resort sheets are comparable to Oprahs favorite Cozy Earth Bamboo Sheet Set, which has a 10-year warranty and a 100-night sleep trial. Cozy Earth sheets have deeper pockets, more color choices and cost a few bucks more than the Resort sheets.

For less than half the cost, the Molecule sheets made from Tencel are a good option. I bought these sheets in the summer because of their temperature-regulating properties. The Molecule sheets dont wrinkle as badly as the Resort sheets, but the Cariloha sheets take softness to an entirely new level.

Final Verdict

Wrinkled bed sheets and pillow covers

If youre a bedding snob (like I’m quickly becoming), youll love the feel of these ultra-soft Cariloha sheets. These luxury sheets seem to get softer with every wash and hold up well. If you want to feel like youre in a five-star resort, the Cariloha Resort sheets hit the mark. However, unless you plan on ironing them, your guests might not be as impressed.

The temperature-regulating properties of these bamboo sheets are hard to quantify, but I didnt wake up wet with sweat, even when I wore an oversized flannel shirt to bed. I know that they keep me more comfortable than my (formerly) beloved crisp cotton or flannel sheets.

The bottom line is that I sleep like a dream in these irresistibly-soft sheets. The worst part? I never want to get out of bed when wrapped in this heavenly bedding.

FAQ

What is the downside to bamboo sheets?

Bamboo tends to wrinkle compared to other fabrics. Additionally, bamboo absorbs more water than cotton and may take longer to dry after washing.

Where are Cariloha products made?

The Cariloha sheets I received are made in Turkey. However, Cariloha uses global vendors and as a B-certified company, they are committed to ethical business practices and reducing their carbon footprint with sustainable products.

How do you wash Cariloha resort sheets?

Cariloha recommends washing their sheets in cold water and using a low heat setting on the dryer.

Do Cariloha sheets have deep pockets?

Considering Ive owned an 18-inch mattress, I wouldnt consider the 14-inch pocket on the Resort sheets deep. My current mattress is 12 inches high, so I wasnt too worried about it when I ordered the Resort sheets. Luckily, the sheets fit perfectly.

However, I was disappointed that I couldnt find any information on the Cariloha website that addressed the actual depth of the pockets. Consumers who need deep pockets may find this lack of information frustrating. The Cariloha website states that the Classic Bamboo Bed Sheet Set has extra deep pockets, but again, no mention of the height of the mattress it will fit.

I Slept on the Nectar Premier Copper Memory Foam Mattress and My Back and Shoulder Pain Went Away https://www.familyhandyman.com/article/nectar-premier-copper-review/ Wed, 24 Jan 2024 20:51:18 +0000 https://www.familyhandyman.com/?p=594919 I am a side-sleeper who has been sleeping on the Nectar Premier Copper Memory Foam Mattress for two years, and here is what you need to know about it.

The post I Slept on the Nectar Premier Copper Memory Foam Mattress and My Back and Shoulder Pain Went Away appeared first on Family Handyman.

]]>
As a side sleeper, I can confirm that a moderately cushy, memory foam mattress is the only sleeping option that provides that rare combination of comfort and supportand experts agree.

“Memory foam mattresses may be particularly beneficial for side sleepers because they are able to accommodate the specific positioning of the neck and the lower back as the body moves throughout the night to facilitate sleep,” explains Peter Whang, MD, a Yale Medicine orthopedic surgeon who specializes in spine conditions.

However, not all of the squishy, body-conforming sleeping surfaces are created equal. In fact, some of them have serious drawbacks. For example, while some memory foam mattresses are cooling, other absorb and retain body heat, a serious con for hot sleepers.

Memory foam can also weaken over time and become less supportive, creating issues for your spine health, and according to Dr. Whang, too much squish is not a good thing. “While features such as adjustable positioning and temperature control may be attractive, one of the most important considerations is making sure that the mattress provides sufficient support to ensure that the body does not ‘sink’ into the material and potentially put it into abnormal alignment,” he says.

I’ve been sleeping on the Nectar Premier Copper Memory Foam Mattress for more than two year, and I can’t recommend it enough for side sleepers (and stomach sleepers and back sleeper alike!) as one of the best mattresses in a box. Here’s my honest review.

What is the Nectar Premier Copper Memory Foam Mattress?

Nectar Premier Copper Memory Foam Mattress in bedroom

The Nectar Premier Copper Memory Foam mattress has five key components, starting from the first shift-resistant, stabilizing lower layer, a supportive base foam layer, a transitional layer, a cooling and pressure-relieving gel foam layer adaptive to your body temperature and finally, a breathable and cooling copper cover. (Take note, though: Because all five layers differ, it is not a flippable mattress.)

The major difference between this mattress and the Nectar Premier Memory Foam Mattress is the addition of the cooling copper fibers. Dr. Whang notes that it is important to select a memory foam that is breathable, “to allow for circulation of air which can help to dissipate body heat.” Copper is an element “which may have a number of benefits such as better temperature regulation and antimicrobial properties,” he adds. This is something I can personally attest to: My husband is an inferno-person, and he’s never had an issue waking up sweaty with the Nectar Premier Copper Memory Foam Mattress, as it actively combats heat retention.

First Impressions

The Nectar mattress is a bed-in-a-box, and my king-size model arrived in a surprisingly compact package for how heavy it was (it weighed over 100 pounds, making it hard to move around). Once my husband and I managed to get it into the bedroom and unbox it, we were immediately impressed by how substantial it really was. The mattress was shrink-wrapped into a jelly roll with layers-upon-layers of protectant plastic wrap. Nectar provided a blade to open it, but it broke almost immediately, so we broke out the scissors to get it unwrapped. Once free, it sprung open, inflating in just seconds.

Compared to other bed-in-a-box mattresses, the Nectar Premier is noticeably thicker and taller. I was also immediately impressed by how plush and comfortable the mattress was, and the silky smooth-slash-cooling sensation of the copper threading. As for the smell, initially I noticed a faint odor, but that dissipated pretty quickly after it had a few hours to air out.

We Tried It

Nectar Premier Copper Memory Foam Mattress

With triple action cooling and two extra inches of support, the Premier Copper is Nectar's tallest, coolest and most supportive mattress.

Product Features

The Nectar Premier Copper Memory Foam Mattress is a medium firm mattress with a 6.5 out of 10 on the firmness scale. Nectar also offers a generous trial period of 365 nights. If you aren’t happy, simply send an email and you will receive a full refund. They also back their mattress up with a “forever warranty,” promising to fix any flaws with either a repair or replacement.

In terms of sizes offered, Nectar covers all the bases: Twin, Twin XL, Full, Queen, King, California King and Split King. The mattress is available as a memory foam (which I tested) or a hybrid with springs. The hybrid is slightly more expensive and includes seven layers versus five.

The total height of the memory foam mattress is 14 inches, including seven inches of foundational memory foam, four inches of supportive but responsive foam and four inches of cooling, gel-infused memory foam on top. This is the layer that really makes the bed comfortable, as it contours to the curves of your body while relieving pressure where you need it to. The tech-forward substance also reacts to your body temperature.

How We Tested It

While I’ve now been sleeping on the mattress for two restful years, I took the most notes after my first 30 nights, focusing on a few specific categories, starting with comfort.

As a longtime side (and sometimes stomach) sleeper who is married to a back sleeper, I looked at comfort from every position. I also considered supportiveness, comparing it to my last mattress, an innerspring pillow-top.

Because one of the standout features of this mattress is the copper threading, I considered heat retention and how well the cooling technology lived up to the hype. Motion transfer was another consideration, as my husband thrashes around a lot at night and I could often feel every kick, bounce and movement on our old mattress.

And last but certainly not least, I considered my back and body health. Since I suffer from recurrent lower-back pain, I wanted to see whether I would wake up with more or less pain.

I am happy to report that the Premier Copper Memory Foam Mattress passed all of my tests.

  • Comfort: I found the 6.5, medium-firmess of the Nectar perfect for my side sleeping. It cradled my body at the pressure points, without allowing it to sink in.
  • Support: I was really impressed with the mattress’s exceptional dynamic support layer. It is firm enough to support your whole body, whether you are sleeping on your side, back or stomach, but with enough give that it hugs your body.
  • Heat retention: As I mentioned, my husband sleeps hot, but I am basically a vampire with no body heat. Even with the cooling technology, both of us slept very comfortably. The heat-regulating technology of the mattress kept him cool all night long, while it kept me feeling just right.
  • Motion transfer: After night one I awoke completely shocked: There was virtually no motion transfer. My husband could have been pounding his feet on the mattress and I felt nothing but that whack of my cat’s tail on my face.
  • Pain relief: After a month of sleeping on the mattress, my shoulder joint pain had subsided dramatically, which I attribute to the top layer of foam. The mattress also did wonders in terms of lower back support, filling the gap between my spine and the mattress when I slept on my back. Where before I would wake up feeling like I had been arching my back all night, I awoke with zero kinks or pain after a few nights on the Nectar.

Two Year Update

Staining and pilling on the Nectar Premier Copper Memory Foam Mattress Reina Galhea Closeup 2 Msedit

After two years of sleeping on the Nectar, I can happily report that its just as comfortable as ever. The mattress shows zero signs of sinking or indentation, and the memory foam is still as supportive as it was on day one. It hasnt lost its subtle cooling properties, either (though I wouldnt go so far as to call this the most cooling mattress on the market). My husband and I continue to marvel at just how much we love sleeping on this bed!

The two signs of wear Ive noticed are staining and pilling. As you can see in the photos throughout (all of which are current to the two-year mark), the mattress is susceptible to stains from regular use. Even through sheets, the surface of the mattress can hold onto buildup from skin oils over time. I cleaned these with baking soda and a steam cleaner, but wasnt able to kick them completely. And speaking of the mattress surface, you can see how certain spots have pilled up and threads have pulled loosethese issues happened during spot cleaning, so be sure to use non-abrasive tools and rub gently when treating mattress stains.

Pros

  • The mattress instantly inflates after unboxing
  • Threaded in copper, the cover is silky smooth and cooling
  • Offers support and comfort with the perfect amount of firmness
  • A great option for side and back sleepers and helps with shoulder joint and lower back pain
  • Zero motion transfer
  • Full year risk-free trial period and forever warranty
  • Free shipping and returns

Cons

  • The mattress is thick and very heavy, so you will need help setting it up
  • Slight odor after first opening, which dissipates quickly
  • The edge support is minimal compared to a spring mattress
  • Non-flippable

What Other Reviewers Have to Say

Both Amazon reviewers and those who purchased straight from the Nectar website rave about the Premier Copper Memory Foam Mattress. Over 4,200 Amazon shopper gave the bed a perfect 5-star rating.

Karen Taylor, an Amazon shopper who slept on a TempurPedic “top-of-the-line mattress for years,” initially bought the Copper for her guest room, but quickly moved it into the primary bedroom. She notes that it is “superbly comfortable” and maintains that the “pressure-point pain” she experienced sleeping her last bed went away. “The mattress stays comfortably cool, and it is light enough that I can easily lift it to put on linens,” she adds. “I am no longer limited to side-sleeping. I can lie on my back without experiencing lower back pain. I like how the upper layer of the mattress cradles my body, and I am no longer tossing and turning.”

Brian I, another Amazon shopper, also attests that after sleeping on the mattress for just two nights, both he and his wife, who suffered from “joint and muscle aches attributed to aging” woke up “pain-free,” adding that the bed is “firm and supportive, but very comfortable.”

A few reviewers did note that you should give the mattress a few days of testing before you make a decision, noting that it doesn’t fully fluff out until the second night of sleeping on it. Another con mentioned by a handful of reviewers is the weight, making it hard to move on your own.

Product Comparison

The closest comparison to the Nectar Premier Copper Memory Foam Mattress is the Nectar Premier Mattress. It offers similar specs and features, minus a few things. The biggest difference is that the Copper is designed with the cooling copper threading. It also has an inch more of the therapeutic gel layer and triple-action cooling versus double. According to reviewers, they are both great mattresses, but the Copper was rated slightly higher in terms of cooling and also comfort.

Price wise, the Premier is quite a bit more affordable, with a range of $1,049 for a twin up to $2,398 for king split.

Final Verdict

Nectar Premier Copper Memory Foam Mattress in a bedroom

After two years, I am still happily sleeping on the Nectar Premier Copper Memory Foam Mattress. I haven’t noticed any changes in terms of its unbeatable cooling quality or motion transfer, and the memory foam has yet to deteriorate. While you won’t need a mattress topper, I do recommend adding a mattress protector (and even this mattress vacuum cleaner) to extend the life of any mattress.

While on the expensive side, the Nectar checks all the boxes including comfort for all sleeping styles, body temperature adaptation and little to no motion transfer, making it well worth the investment. However, if you don’t have a hot sleeper in your bed, the Nectar Premier Mattress is a great alternative that will save you money.

The post Zinus Mattress Review: We’ve Been Sleeping on the Green Tea Bed for Three Years appeared first on Family Handyman.

]]>
Mattress shopping can be incredibly stressful, which is ironic considering the thing you’re looking for is a good night’s rest. Shopping in person can be a time-intensive experience, and though you get the benefit of trying out the mattresses before you buy, they usually have a pretty heavy price tag attached. You can save a good amount of money looking for the best mattresses in a box, but those, too, can be pricey, and the idea of sleeping on an untested mattress can be anxiety-inducing.

Three years ago, I jumped at the chance to test out the Zinus mattress. I had been sleeping on a traditional innerspring mattress with a thick memory foam topper for years, and wanted to see if switching to a full memory foam mattress would help get rid of the aches and pains I often woke up with whenever I’d sleep on my stomach.

“Aside from injury and general posture, back and spine health can be greatly affected by the surface slept upon,” says Michael J. Breus, Ph.D., founder of The Sleep Doctor. “If you wake up from sleep more than three times a week feeling stiff and sore, and it was not due to a big workout, then it’s probably the bed. If the mattress is sagging like a taco, and you’re a stomach sleeper, then it will put more pressure on the lower back and cause continued strain in that area.”

Not only is the Zinus Green Tea mattress one of the highest-rated memory foam mattresses Amazon, but it is also one of the most affordable. Here’s what I can tell you after having slept on it for three years.

What is the Zinus Green Tea mattress?

The Zinus Green Tea memory foam mattress is one of the top-selling mattresses on Amazon, and also one of the most affordable. But the bargain-basement price doesn’t mean bargain-basement quality; over 53,700 people have given it five stars, resulting in a highly impressive 4.5-star average rating. The Zinus is a bed-in-a-box, meaning it ships straight to your door in a compact packageand if you have Amazon Prime, shipping is free!

Outside of the price, the main selling point of this affordable mattress is that its supportive memory foam construction is infused with green tea and cooling gel, making it ideal for hot sleepers. It’s built on a base of high-density support foam, followed by a layer of comfort foam and topped with a layer of green tea and charcoal-infused memory foam that enhances airflow, allowing body heat to escape.

We Tried It

Zinus Green Tea Mattress

Cooling gel foam resists body heat and conforms to your shape while green tea keeps your mattress feeling fresh for a more restful sleep.

Zinus Green Tea Mattress Features

The Zinus Green Tea mattress is described as firm, but the exact firmness depends on the thickness of the mattress. The taller it is, the softer it will feel as your body sinks into the memory foam, so if you like things on the plusher sidelike myselfconsider ordering the 12-inch model.

There are currently two models available: the original, which we tested for this review, and new version that’s made without fiberglass. All materials used are produced without the use of harmful chemicals and are certified safe, with foams that are CertiPUR-US certified and an OEKO-TEX-certified mattress cover. The Zinus is available in four sizes (twin, full, queen and king), and four different heights (6, 8, 10 and 12 inches).

All Zinus mattresses include a 10-year limited warranty. If you purchase through Amazon, you’ll be able to return the mattress for a full refund or replacement within 30 days if you find it’s not the right fit for you. Buying directly through the Zinus website, you’ll get a 100-night trial, but shipping and delivery may take longer.

How We Tested It

A box with a mattress sitting in front of a door.

When my brand-new Zinus Green Tea memory foam mattress arrived, I was pleased to find that it was packaged in a tall, thin box rather than a squat, dense cube. The shape made it easier to carry up the stairs and into my apartment. Just shy of 50 pounds, it was an easy task for two people, though it could be a struggle for anyone setting up their mattress solo.

After removing the layer of plastic protecting the mattress, I unfurled it fully and let it lay flat on the floor to decompress and reinflate. Since the directions say to let it sit for 72 hours for it to fully come to shape, I did this in my living room so I could continue sleeping in my old bed until my mattress was ready. My Zinus definitely benefited from the three-day resting period, so plan accordingly.

A common complaint with boxed memory foam mattresses is that they usually come with a noticeable chemical odor, but to my surprise, the Zinus smelled like absolutely nothing at all. This is key if you’re buying a mattress during colder months, since you won’t have to keep the windows open for several days as it airs out.

As for plushness, I found this to be the perfect medium between the comforting softness of my favorite memory foam topper and the supportive firmness of a traditional innerspring. I alternate between stomach and side sleeping, and felt supported and comfortable no matter what position I was in. I have no aches or pains when I wake up in the morning, and not a trace of stiffness or soreness around my neck or hips.

Historically I’m a hot sleeper; even in the dark days of winter, I sleep with a fan at all times. The Zinus mattress delivered on its cooling claims, keeping me comfortable all night long. I’m also a restless sleeper who tosses and turns frequently throughout the night, much to the chagrin of my partner, who wakes up earlier than I do. But thanks to the memory foam that contours to and cradles my body, neither of us were able to feel each other’s middle-of-the-night movements. I will note that though I adapted to our new Zinus mattress right away, my partner’s body took a few weeks to adjust to the firmness. But after a few weeks of breaking in, they began to sleep perfectly without any complaints.

After over three years of sleeping on my Zinus mattress, I can say it’s held up beautifully. It sleeps just the same as it did when I first unboxed it. The only way to tell that it’s not a brand-new mattress is by looking closely at its exterior. The patterned cover has pilled a little, and is stained from a time I overzealously applied self-tanner. But once it’s covered with sheetswhich, of course, it always is except on laundry daysyou’d never know it’s years-old.

I still appreciate its soft, yet supportive, memory foam construction. While this particular model boasts a cooling green tea-infused foam, I can’t genuinely tell the difference the green tea makes. I wouldn’t say that this mattress is perfect for hot sleepersthough the addition of a cooling bed system would make a world of differencebecause the memory foam does tend to trap heat. But still, even on hot summer nights I’m sleeping comfortably. For an Amazon budget mattress, I’m thoroughly impressed by the Zinus.

Pros

  • Highly affordable
  • Available in multiple heights
  • Available through Amazon Prime
  • Supportive stay-cool memory foam
  • Reduced motion transfer
  • CertiPUR certified for high standards of durability, performance and materials
  • Firm, yet soft, feel
  • No off-gassing smell on arrival
  • Lots of customization options for the perfect size and fit

Cons

  • Green tea infusion lacks research

FAQ

Is Zinus a good mattress brand?

It may be hard to believe that Zinus is a good mattress brand, considering how incredibly affordable its mattresses are, especially when compared to beloved premium mattresses brands like Saatva and Helix. But after over three years of nightly use, we can confidently say that Zinus is not a good mattress brandit’s a great one.

Why would a mattress be green tea infused?

According to Zinus, green tea extract is added to its mattresses to naturally guard against bacteria and odors. Known for their natural antimicrobial properties, both green tea extract and charcoal is added to Zinus’ memory foam to make sure your mattress smells fresh for years to come. And if your mattress needs a little refreshing from time to time, check out this editor-tested mattress cleaner.

How long does a Zinus mattress last?

A Zinus mattress can last as long as 10 years, depending on the model and how its used. Factors like weight distribution, usage frequency and maintenance can impact its longevity, but regular rotation and the use of a mattress protector can help extend its lifespan.

What Other Reviewers and Experts Had to Say

The Green Tea mattress has an average of 53,700 five-star ratings. Here’s what real-life buyers are saying in their Zinus mattress reviews:

“I’ve had this bed for almost a year now and it’s seriously the most comfortable mattress I have ever had,” writes verified purchaser, Faith Easley. “I can’t believe all I needed to do was buy a $200 mattress on Amazon. I thought it would be a fail, but I was tired of buying $1,500 mattresses for them to just be terrible. This bed is perfect for people that are looking for medium firm. If you think this bed is going to be too soft or too hard, it’s not. I think it’s the perfect balance.”

Five-star reviewer, Eric Gomes, says, “I recently bought my mother a memory foam mattress. Went from store to store until finally finding the one she wanted. This mattress is one-fourth of the price and feels exactly the same as the one I purchased for her. You do need to let it reach its full size which will take two to three days. I love it because it is FIRM but comfortable. My back already feels much better after a few days.”

“I bought this mattress during a holiday special. It is one of the most comfortable mattresses in the house,” writes Kelly Tower, another five-star reviewer. “Highly recommend for people who like a slightly firmer mattress. The cool part is how you kind of feel wrapped into the mattress. It molds around you differently than my own memory foam mattress. I think it’s the gel. Anyhow, it was a great buy. Highly recommend.”

Product Comparison: Green Tea vs. Green Tea Luxe

A roll of plastic wrap sitting on a wooden floor.

There’s also a premium version of the Green Tea memory foam mattress: the Green Tea Luxe memory foam mattress. This Zinus model has green tea and purified charcoal infused into every memory foam layer, unlike the original, which only includes it in the top layer. It also features exceptional airflow ventilation, targeted pressure zones and a more breathable knitted cover for an enhanced cooling experience. However, the Luxe is only available at a 12-inch height, and it’s pricier than the original option.

Final Verdict

After three years of use, the Zinus mattress is as comfy as ever. It’s the most comfortable place in my house to curl up with a good book or binge-watch my latest Netflix obsession for hours on end. Most importantly, it still lets me sleep great night after night, keeping me cool, supported and comfortable. Even if it wasn’t such an incredible bargain, I would highly recommend it to anyone looking for the best mattress in a box.

If youve been on the cleaning side of TikTok lately, youve probably swiped up on at least one cleaning guru who swears by a mattress vacuum when completing their Sunday refresh. To be honest, Im always a little skeptical of these vacuuming devices, and wonder how much good they truly do. So, after seeing enough mattress cleaning and couch vacuuming videos, I decided I needed to try a mattress vacuum cleaner for myself.

Thats where the Jigoo mattress vacuum cleaner comes in. Its a handheld vacuum with a dust mite sensor that glides across and cleans fabric surfaces. Heres how my testing of the new Amazon bed vacuum went.

What is the Jigoo mattress vacuum cleaner?

Jigoo Bed Vacuum Cleaner

As mentioned, this mattress vacuum cleaner is a handheld, corded device with a built-in dust sensor that tells you when your mattress is clean. It has a light-emitting diode (LED) screen that displays a red light when a surface is dirty and a green light when the surface is clean. The screen also tells you the dust mite index of a surface while vacuuming. Beyond that, this vacuum eliminates allergens and hard-to-see dust particles from mattresses, pillows, furniture and other fabric surfaces.

We Tried It

Jigoo Mattress Vacuum Cleaner

This cleaner is a powerful handheld vacuum that eliminates dust and dander from your mattress.

Jigoo Mattress Vacuum Cleaner Features

Jigoo Bed Vacuum Cleaner Features

Equipped with a metal brush roll, powerful motor and ultraviolet (UV) light, this mattress vacuum cleanersuctions and deep cleanssurfaces of dust, dander and pet hair. It has an advanced high-efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filtration system that filters over 99% of tiny particles to ensure clean air output on your most-used household surfaces. The filter itself is designed to be washed and reused, but its recommended that you replace the filter every six months or so, depending on usage.

The corded bed vacuum comes with a 16-foot cord that will reach across almost any any bed or couch. It also has a dual-cup canister design that funnels dust and debris into a separate waste chamber thats easily emptied with the push of a button.

The Jigoo cleaner has a 254-nanometer (nm) UV light, which is proven to eliminate bacteria, viruses and other contaminants. With 500 watts of power and a suction of 1.89 pounds per square inch (psi), the Jigoo vacuum provides cleaning power that can be hard to find in other handheld vacuuming devices. Plus, its high-speed brush picks up dust and pet hair quickly, so you dont have to hover over one area for an extended period or vacuum the same spot over and over again.

How We Tested It

Jigoo Bed Vacuum Cleaner testing

If you thought using your regular vacuum on your couch and mattress was doing it cleaning justice, think again. I was used to swapping out the head on my Tineco Pure One Station to vacuum my couchnot any longer. If Im cleaning my couch for guests or changing out my sheets, Im pulling the Jigoo bed cleaner from the closet and putting it to work.

After seeing several TikTok videos featuring different mattress vacuums, I was skeptical that the Jigoo would be any better than my regular vacuum on household fabric surfaces. Quite frankly, I was anticipating it to be just another gimmick or unnecessary household appliance. However, living in a home that seems to accumulate dust and dander more than any other place Ive lived, I still held out hope that the bed vacuum would bring some relieve to my fabric surfaces. So, when the Jigoo box arrived at my doorstep, it took about five minutes for me to tear open the box, plug in the device and start using it on my couch.

Upon opening the box, I was impressed with the wide brush head (just over 9 inches) and rose gold finishing on the vacuum. Two additional filter and inlet sponges were included in the box, along with a cleaning brush for the device.

I should pause to say that my partner and I have purchased a new couch and bed within the last six months, and with it being the holiday season, I had recently vacuumed my couch for guests before the arrival of the Jigoo vacuum. That said, I wasnt expecting the vacuum to pick up much.

I was shocked. As I rolled the vacuum over the surface of my couch I was stunned (almost disgusted) with the amount of dust and dander I saw in the canister. It seemed to pick up everything on the surface of my fabric couch, and it also helped to reduce any lingering smells left behind by pets. My regular stick vacuum was not suctioning the surface of my couch like the Jigoo was. I vacuumed everything: the pillows, throw blankets and ottoman.

Jigoo Bed Vacuum Cleaner gif

Then, I went to change my sheets and vacuumed the surface of my Cocoon mattress, along with the surface of my Eight Sleep Pod cover. Did I realize how much dust was sitting beneath my bed sheets? No, I did not. I found that the Jigoo vacuum reduced odors there and made the surface of my bed much smoother and cleaner looking. I also like that I can feel the heat output beneath the vacuum, which helps sanitize surfaces.

However, and this is a big however, my vacuums UV light doesn’t kick on when the vacuum is in use. Im still impressed with the suctioning and cleaning power, but I am disappointed that the UV light it came with is defective. I didnt notice this until after a few uses, and I havent contacted Jigoo or Amazon about a replacement yet.

Pros

  • Strong suction power
  • Visibly removes a ton of dust and dander from fabric surfaces
  • High-speed brush roll
  • LED screen tells you when surface is clean or dirty
  • Easy to remove and clean canister
  • Advanced HEPA filter
  • Heat output kills germs

Cons

  • Corded, but at 16 feet long, it should work for most people
  • UV light on the bottom of my specific vacuum came defective

FAQ

Is it good to vacuum your bed?

Jigoo Bed Vacuum Cleaner

Vacuuming your bed and mattress can help remove dust, allergens and debris from your sleeping space, in turn promoting a healthier nights rest. Of course, a cleaner, dust- and dirt-free bed looks better, too.

Can vacuuming your bed get rid of bed bugs?

Vacuuming alone cannot get rid of bed bugs, no matter how powerful the vacuum. Only very hot water and/or chemical treatment can get rid of bed bugs.

What Other Reviewers Had to Say

With an average of 4.8 out of five stars on Amazon, other reviewers are finding the Jigoo mattress vacuum cleanerimpressive, too. Overwhelmingly positive reviews also lead me to believe that most buyers didnt receive a somewhat defective product like I did. Heres what they have to say about the vacuum.

Mark Ziemann, a five-star reviewer, writes, Wowwho knew! This is one of those items that you never knew you neededuntil you used it! We live in Arizonathe land of dustand we work hard to keep our home dust free. We have long used a handheld beater-style vacuum that has always seemed pretty effective on our couches and mattresses, and we do a full bedding wash weeklyso I didn’t expect much from this gizmo… Color me surprised!

I’ve previously had a bed vacuum from another vender and it was OK,” shares D.R. Brown, another five-star reviewer. “It was smaller than this Jigoo mattress vacuum cleaner, meaning it took longer to use. This Jigoo mattress vacuum is larger than other mattress vacuums I’ve seen and has a powerful suction. I say this vacuum is delightful and disgusting because it does exactly what it’s supposed to do, but seeing the results of a filthy mattress you’ve been sleeping on is a bit disturbing. Despite the gross collections in the dustbin, I feel so much better after using this mattress vacuum.

Final Verdict

Jigoo Bed Vacuum Cleaner final verdict

The Jigoo mattress vacuum cleaner is one of the most powerful and effective handheld vacuums Ive tested. It does wonders for keeping my mattress and couch clean and odor free. For those reasons, I would recommend it as a top choice when it comes to mattress vacuums. I also like the split canister that filters dust, debris and hair into one side for easy emptying and cleaning. While I appreciate the clean/dirty LED display light on the front of the vacuum as a guide while vacuuming, I am disappointed that the UV light on the bottom of mine doesnt work. My guess is that it’s a one-off issue, and I still find the Jigoo bed vacuum highly effective. Ill be using it every time I want to clean household fabric surfaces.

How Do You Get a Rug Under the Bed? https://www.familyhandyman.com/article/rug-under-bed/ Fri, 01 Dec 2023 16:03:13 +0000 https://www.familyhandyman.com/?p=586414 Discover how to properly position your bedroom rug with minimal frustration by following these pro tips, tricks and techniques.

The post How Do You Get a Rug Under the Bed? appeared first on Family Handyman.

]]>
Putting a rug under your bed can transform the ambiance of a bedroom, adding a touch of comfort and style. While the end result is alluring, it can be difficult to position the rugwithout damaging it.

We spoke to rug pros Chris Fennell and Gary Remillard for some industry tips. You’ll learn how to prep your space, lay the rug properly and maintain it so it looks great for years to come.

Before You Put a Rug Under Your Bed

Start by cleaning. Remove any items stored under your bed, then vacuum or sweep thoroughly. Mop or wipe down hardwood floors to remove residual dust.

“If there’s a rug in place that a customer is replacing, we’ll remove the old one, and they can vacuum underneath before the new one is laid,” Fennell says.

Also, clear the floor space around the bed so there’s plenty of room to maneuver. Move nightstands or furniture out of the way. “We tell homeowners to remove any breakables from the room, and we remove or move any furniture,” Fennell says.

If possible, enlist a helper to make this task more manageable. Beds are heavy and difficult to lift while unrolling or moving a rug.

How To Put a Rug Under Your Bed

Professional rug delivery crews work together to position the rug under a bed. The technique varies depending on how much of the rug goes under the bed.

“If the rug is only going under part of the bed, our movers will lift up half of the bed and one rolls out the rug, then they lift the other half of the bed,” Fennell says, “If the rug is going fully under the bed, we will take the bed apart or remove other furniture to move the bed out of the way.”

Remillard recommends determining how much of the rug is going under the bed first. Then position your rug appropriately, so it’s close to in place before dealing with the bed.

Here’s how professional movers tackle this:

Put a rug completely under the bed

  • Remove all bedding.
  • Remove the mattress and box spring. Stand them securely against a nearby wall, or in adjacent room.
  • Disassemble the bed frame using appropriate tools. Each bed is different, but generally consists of four pieces.
  • Carefully lay the pieces in a nearby room.
  • Unroll your rug and lay it down.
  • Adjust and move the rug until it’s where you want it.
  • Reassemble the bed in the center of the rug.

Put a rug partially under the bed

  • Measure the length of the rug.
  • Determine how far under the bed you want the rug. Use painter’s tape or an object to mark where you want the rug to end.
  • Use this end mark and your rug’s dimensions to position the rug at the end of the bed. If your rug is 10 feet long and you want half of it to be under the bed, place the rug five feet from the end of the bed and unroll from there. This should leave your rug unrolled at your desired end point.
  • Center the rug with the bed. This prevents side to side adjustments later on.
  • While a helper lifts one foot of the bed, unroll some of the rug and place it under the bed.
  • Repeat this step on the other side of the bed. Both sides may need to be lifted several times.
  • Set the bed down and make adjustments as needed.

Pro tip: Remillard recommends your helper lift the bed while making adjustments to avoid damaging the rug.

What To Do After Your Rug Is Under Your Bed

Whew! You did it. Your rug is under the bed and looking great. Now what?

To properly maintain the rug and the floor, here are a few things you can do:

  • Vacuum regularly: This removes dust and dirt.
  • Keep the rug clean: Spot clean or shampoo your rug as needed. You can rent a rug cleaner at most home improvement stores. Or hire a professional. “If the rug is in a bedroom, these tend to see very little foot traffic, so a rug can be there for many years before cleaning is necessary,” Fennell says.
  • Rotate regularly: “If there’s a lot of light in the room with lots of windows, you may want to consider rotating the rug every once in a while,” Fennell says. “However, you would need to disassemble or lift the bed to do that.” A quarter turn annually should be sufficient.
  • Add furniture pads: Plastic or felt pads placed under bedposts (aka legs) protect the rug from damage.

The post The Buffy Cloud Comforter Is the Most Awarded on the Internet—Here’s Why appeared first on Family Handyman.

]]>
Odds are youve heard of or seen Buffy bedding on social media in recent years. Specifically, Buffys Cloud Comforter has received a lot of online attention for being soft, lightweight, fluffy, sustainableand now, machine washable.

After all the online buzz, we decided that it was finally time for us to test the famous Buffy Cloud Comforter for ourselves here at Family Handyman. So, after getting our hands on one and sleeping with it for 30 days, we can tell you exactly what its like out of the package, how it feels and looks on a bed and how it holds up after washing.

If youve had your eye on a Buffy comforter for a while, were here to help you decide if you need one. Whether youre shopping for new bedding for yourself or plan on gifting a new set this upcoming holiday season, the Buffy Cloud Comforter may be the piece of bedding youve been searching for. Heres what we think about it.

What is the Buffy Cloud Comforter?

 Buffys Cloud Comforter

The Buffy Cloud Comforter is a fluffy, breathable down-alternative comforter. Its hypoallergenic and machine washable. Plus, its super lightweight, which makes it ideal for hot sleepers and year-round use.

The comforters inner fibers are webbed to help prevent it from clumping up, and the outer shell is made of ultra-soft fabric that stays quiet when rubbed together. The fabric of the comforter is made up of lyocell, a plant-sourced rayon thats smoother and absorbs moisture faster than cotton. The material is also safe for pets and kids.

While the Cloud Comforter is machine washable on a cold-water cycle, it is recommended that you hang the comforter to dry and use a duvet cover with it.

We Tried It

Buffy Cloud Comforter

Meet Buffy's Cloud Comforter, a lightweight, breathable comforter that's the most reviewed (and awarded) on the internet.

Buffy Cloud Comforter Features

The Cloud Comforter comes in three sizes: twin/twin XL, full/queen and king/California king. It comes in a single color (white), as its intended to be used inside of the Breeze Duvet Cover (or another duvet cover of your choosing).

The comforter has a round quilted stitching pattern thats designed to keep it fluffy while also keeping the fill evenly distributed. The Cloud Comforter is thin, so its designed for temperature regulation and cooling. If youre someone who gets hot under thick comforters or find traditional down comforters to be too heavy, then the Cloud Comforter may be the lightweight, moisture-wicking blanket youve been looking for. Pair it with a set of cooling sheets, like the ones from Molecule, and say goodbye to night sweats!

How We Tested It

 Buffys Cloud Comforter

I tested the Cloud Comforter for myself for 30 days, and heres how it went. The comforter arrived in a vacuum-sealed package and fluffed up immediately after opening. Upon opening the package, I was impressed by how soft the comforter is to touch. Sometimes down-alternative comforters are slick or scratchy on the surface, but the Cloud Comforter is plush and doesnt squeak when the fabric is rubbed together. The second thing I noticed was how thin the comforter is. My initial thought was that this comforter would be great for hotter climates and seasons, hot sleepers and layering. But after covering up with it, I was also surprised by how much how much warmth it did provide for its thinness.

The comforter will be quite wrinkled upon opening, which isnt unusual. Of course, if you use a duvet cover over it, that problem will solve itself. Another thing I noticed in terms of how it looks on the bed is that it seems to run on the smaller side. I ordered a king-size comforter for my queen-size bed because I like an oversized look, but the comforter fit my bed like I would expect a queen-size comforter to fit it. That said, I would recommend ordering a size up, and if you have a king-size bed, you might be disappointed with the sizing. In fact, the sizing is my one, single complaint with the Buffy Cloud Comforter. For reference, the twin/twin XL is 90 inches by 70 inches, the full/queen is 90 inches by 90 inches and the king/Cali king is 90 inches by 105 inches.

I dont consider myself a hot sleeper by any means, but sometimes a thick down or down-alternative comforter can trap in too much heat and feel a bit suffocating, even during colder months. I love the way the Cloud Comforter feels light and airy, but still cozy and warm. If you use a mattress warmer, like the Eight Sleep pod cover, on cold nights like I do, then you might prefer a lighter comforter to keep from overheating. My partner, on the other hand, is a very hot sleeper and prefers the Cloud Comforter to our other heavier comforter from Sunday Citizen. He finds that the Cloud Comforter keeps him from sweating and kicking off the covers throughout the night.

In the month or so that Ive been using the Cloud Comforter, Ive washed it twice on a cold, gentle cycle with mild detergent. The first time I washed it, I hung it to dry as recommended. The second time, I put it in the dryer on low heat for about 15 to 20 minutes. While Buffy does say not to put the Cloud Comforter in the dryer, I personally didnt notice any issues or changes to the comforter after drying it briefly on a low-heat, gentle drying cycle.

Pros

  • Lightweight
  • Moisture-wicking
  • Soft to the touch
  • Machine washable
  • Sustainable
  • Hypoallergenic
  • Bisphenol A (BPA)-free and Global Recycled Standard (GRS)-certified
  • Corner loops fasten to duvet cover ties
  • Made for all-season use
  • Affordable

Cons

  • Runs smaller than expected

FAQ

 Buffys Cloud Comforter

Is the Buffy Cloud Comforter good for hot sleepers?

Yes! I cant express this enoughif you’re a hot sleeper looking for a lightweight, down-alternative duvet insert, then this comforter is unbeatable for the price. Its also breathable and moisture-wicking, so if you do sweat, the Cloud Comforter will absorb it better than a cotton comforter.

Can you wash a Buffy Cloud Comforter?

You certainly can. You can machine wash the Cloud Comforter on a cold-cycle setting, but you should avoid putting it in the dryer. Instead, hang it to dry.

Do you need a duvet cover for a Buffy Cloud Comforter?

You dont need a duvet cover to use the Cloud Comforter. It can be used on its own, as a blanket or as an added layer to your existing bedding. However, I would recommend using a duvet cover with the Cloud Comforter to style it and help keep it clean.

What Other Reviewers Had to Say

The Buffy Cloud Comforter has an average rating of 4.5 out of five stars on Amazon from more than 1,600 ratings. Heres what real-life buyers have to say about the Cloud Comforter.

Five-star reviewer, Whitney Stark, says, I recently stayed in an Airbnb for the weekend. The cottage had this comforter on the bed, and I fell in love. As soon as I got home, I had to order one for home! It is the most comfortable bedding. I usually switch between hot and cold all night, but this comforter helps to keep me regulated. I have not woken up hot since I got it. I could not recommend more.

I absolutely love my Buffy duvet insert!!” says verified purchaser, Divya Rao. “I really appreciate that it’s a sustainable alternative to downsomething important for my personal ethos and values. I also was so surprised at how lightweight and relatively thin the comforter is! It’s still so warm and comfortable and doesn’t make me overheat (which is a problem that I’ve experience before with down comforters and other cooling alternatives). The comforter itself feels super luxurious and silky to the touch, and you can tell that it’s really nice and high quality. I also like that it’s more lightweight, because that makes it much more easy to maneuver getting in and out of duvet covers, and it has the little tabs on the corners that you can tie to the insides of your duvet cover, which is so helpful and prevents bunching. I would definitely purchase this comforter again for the guest room in my apartment! Getting out of the bed in the morning is that much more difficult, thanks to my Buffy comforter!

The Buffy comforter is AMAZING!!! I have been looking to replace my old down comforter for a while. After plenty of research, I really liked Buffys philosophy of being earth-friendly while understanding my needs of a high quality productI immediately put it on my bed and even fell asleep without my regular comforter cover on it because it felt so great (breathable material). I had such a solid night sleep and very happy with this purchase!! HIGHLY recommended! shares Jackie Ferrer, a five-star reviewer.

Buffy Cloud Comforter vs. Buffy Breeze Comforter

 Buffys Cloud Comforter

While the Cloud Comforter is by far Buffys most popular comforter pick, the Buffy Breeze Comforterthe brands truest cooling comforterhas gotten a lot of attention recently, too. Made with the same filling as the Cloud Comforter, the Breeze Comforter is designed for especially hot sleepers and warm climates. While it shares a lot of features with the Cloud Comforter (material makeup, sizing and overall look), the Breeze Comforter is significantly thinner. However, it does have some weight to it.

The Breeze Comforter is also dry-clean only, which is a huge deciding factor for me. It’s meant to be a duvet insert, too, so you can wash the duvet cover to keep your bedding clean on a regular basis. Although, I still like to have the option of washing my comforter and dry cleaning can be a pain.

Final Verdict

I love the Buffy Cloud Comforter. It has all the features I look for in a comforter. Its soft, breathable, washable and cozy. Plus, its made sustainably. If youre looking for a lightweight, down-alternative comforter or duvet insert at a reasonable price, youll be pleased with the Cloud Comforter.

My only qualm with the Cloud Comforter is that it runs smaller than Id like. I sized up to get the look I wanted. But if youre buying for a king-size bed, you may find that the king size is a bit smaller than youd like. I would love for Buffy to make an additional larger size or two for those with larger beds who like an oversized comforter.

The post How to Check for Bed Bugs in a Hotel appeared first on Family Handyman.

]]>
As you may have heard, Paris is in the midst of bed bug infestation. This has only heightened travelers’ concerns about bringing bed bugs home by accident.

There are many ways to ensure bed bugs don’t get into your home. First and foremost, travelers should always check their hotel rooms for these pests. These six steps will show you how to properly inspect your space, preventing unwanted bites now and potential infestations in the future.

Tips for Checking for Bed Bugs in a Hotel

Place Your Luggage Out of Reach

Robert Puckett, Ph.D., an associate professor and extension entomologist at Texas A&M, told Forbesbed bugs struggle to climb smooth surfaces. So place your suitcase on the luggage stand or in the bathtub as soon as you enter your room. Keep it there while you perform a full inspection.

Check the Bed

Bed bugs, unsurprisingly, love beds. Consumer Reports recommends pulling back all the sheets and blankets to check for bed bugs. Then look at the headboard, mattress, boxspring and pillows.

Scan for adult bugs, as well as eggs, nymphs, exoskeletons and any “dark, rust-colored spots” of fecal matter. Don’t forget to use a flashlight to check under the mattress and box spring too!

Inspect All Soft Surfaces

Bed bugs love to burrow, so check all the crevices of soft surfaces. In speaking with Consumer Reports,Michael Potter, Ph.D., a professor of entomology at the University of Kentucky, suggests inspecting any upholstered furniture.

“If I’m traveling, I’ll take a quick look at the couch or recliner, if there is one at the seams and the head and neck area,” he says.

Report Infestations Immediately

If you do find any bed bugs in your room, alert hotel management immediately. If you choose to remain at that hotel, Puckett says, be sure to get a room that doesn’t share a wall, floor or ceiling with the infested one.

Bag Your Belongings

Regardless of whether you find evidence of bed bugs, Potter says it’s always wise to place your belongings in plastic bags. And keep your items close together instead of spread out across the room.

“If there happen to be bugs, they sometimes will get into things,” he told Consumer Reports. “The more stuff you have around, the higher probability of that.”

Do Your Laundry ASAP

As soon as you return home from your trip, do your laundry.

In an interview with Forbes, Garrett Thrasher, vice president of Thrasher Termite & Pest Control in Southern California, suggests leaving your luggage outside and putting clothes directly into the wash.

And throw everything in the dryer, as opposed to air-drying them. Thrasher says water doesn’t kill bed bugs, but 30 minutes of high heat in the dryer will.
